Word of Honor - I realized something in Ep. 16

I realized that there was something that they probably cropped/zoomed in on the video in order to censor.

The Scorpion King and Zhao Jing are talking, and at about about 29:44 you can see Scorpion's arms move up for a fraction of a second. Then it zooms in a tiny bit to basically just show Scorpion's head, and Zhao Jing from like the top 4th? of his torso up. At 29:45-:46 you can see part of Zhao Jing's robe move a tiny bit. Scorpion is clearly pulling on part of his robe in a playful manner and they were like, oh, uh, we can't show that..... but if you pay attention that's definitely what is happening... I got the "vibes" between them already from this interaction, which is the 2nd time they're shown together. (Ep. 15 shows them talking but with Zhao Jing purposely obscured, so you just know Scorpion has some mysterious "godfather" -- the subs on Youku say "father" but "godfather" is what it said on Netflix, I believe, and may be a better translation for English speakers to understand they are NOT related...) I was surprised that not everyone gets the relationship they have with each other, tbh. Even if it's not clear earlier on, when that metaphor of the "gambler" comes in, and Scorpion says something like "I am a gambler too"..... I mean come on. But not everyone realized it? (Based on comments on YT videos and some people's reactions I've seen) Still, I wasn't aware of this little robe pull, at least not consciously, until just now. I just love noticing those little details. Knowing how much work they put in to include things, even if they might have been censored later, is fascinating (and really special!!!) to me.

minako is g/ojos older sister (by a few years she graduated college and was in her first year as a teacher in ye olde flashback era of when g*ojo and besties were in school) she was married and thus and still into today she uses her late spouses surname mizuhara.

shiori is either n//aoyas twin but they weren’t really close as kids and aren’t close now so there isn’t much to that?? (or maybe they were but now its strained due to yk succession who gets to be heir i am not quite sure about that yet!! oo it would give s//uccesiion but make it j//jk OO!!!!!) ORR she’s the older sib of m*ai and m*aki?? and still candidate of heir (?) in that as well?)

BUT ANYWAY..!!!! she was an old classmate of g/ojo and the besties (was maybe in either his year or n/anami and kannas year?) AND BESTEST BUDS. its giving childhood sweethearts to lovers yk? CUUTE.

fast forward t*oji passes….ish. right she and him after they grad they raise her nephew together (he even has a room at her apartment they’ve been SUUPER married but never got together what gives yk?? ILL EXPLAIN 💀) so her career skyrocketed (as an actress?? model? both????) and so things got busy BUUT like they’ve baaasically been living together and raising two youngins (minako and t*oji have a daughter aya <3) they hang out like ALL THE TIME……. and yet not married 💀

(but i mean thats not to say they’ll never yk *giggles* shes taking a year off of to help out and support m*egumi at his first year with goj 🥀🤧 SUPER MARRIED PARENTS!!) theyve alsoo been very invested the last decade or so with getting two of their besties together ever since n*anami said he was interested in her since like forever and never told them about it but swore to never tell her about it so theyve been trying to subtly *wheeze* set them up 🥀🤡

WHICH LEADS ME TO KANNAAA so she’s the granddaughter to the principal of the k*yoto campus and she transferred to tokyo so not to have the rep as “principals kid” (she still did alas 💀✨🤧) and possibly get special treatment bc shes related to one of the administrators. her curse technique she uses (its like c*assia in r*ogue trader-ish seeing emotions, curses and resonances as colors and swipes of paint and swipes of a paintbrush !!) and its helpful as she is a psychotherapist these days for sorcerers !!!!!!! 🌸 very much on the outside cool and collected “has her stuff together.” meanwhile that mask hides behind a hot mess teehee <3 also parties a lot chronic partner drags shiori to all of her after parties and galas and suggests kanna “tags along” so she can party 🥀😌 the girls are thriving!!!!!!!!

she didn’t think anything of nan and in fact likely didn’t even know he existed let alone has had a childhood harbored crush on her 🥀💀 ……. and then they reunite when they’re set up together in ep9 TEEHEE (everyone (g*ojo and shiori) cheers they’re brains for suggesting she aid them HUUUGE) she had planned only to be there for the exchange event and then go back to things buuuut teehee n*anami like kanna fell HARD (everyone’s thrilled especially g*ojo and shiori ndjxxh) and thus decided to take a transfer to be in t*okyo HEHE.

SO GOLDFISH BRAIN their curses!! minako (dream walking/weaving), shiori (pied piper if i make her an actress she doesn’t do musicals or play instruments UNLESS there’s curses in her midst bc she can control them and people in the vicinity with her ability (like meat puppets 🥀🤧 BUUT if i made her a model people already would expect her not to sing so i mean it would be convenient??) and kanna was listed earlier!!

(also when g*ojo and shiori finally DO get together everyone was like ????? we thought you both already were?? and they were like 🥀🧍‍♀️🧍👁️✨😶🫨)

BONUS TRACK VERSION: so nan and kan begin as more of a fwb but it doesn’t last im thinking bc teehee <3 BUUT not before shiori stopped by kans place for something and noticed…… something of nanamis there 🥀💀 (like a tie or jacket of his or something yk?) Character fucking depth.

So let's take Mandy for example, she was You deserve this and that and you're so nice and sweet and blah blah

But she also,,, tried killing Karen??? And they're relationship was lowkey toxic??? (Lip and Mandy, which I honestly will be a supporter of till the end of time regardless of anything)

Speaking of,

even Karen, for example,

I'll admit I was a little skeptical when they first added her, but she grew on me. Loved her and Lip. Until her dad went and fucked up and she moved on to make THE worst decisions she could from then on.

Then we have the most controversial topic ever.. Debbie. Honestly, for me it's a love-hate thing but I don't want the Debbie cult after me I shall leave this as such.

Then we have Carl, did all his drugs and guns and gang shit and ends up a.. police officer? A clean police officer?! See what I mean?

I'm not saying he was a bad person, but he could have just as easily ended up with drug ties while in the po-po.

Then of course, Lip,

Our beloved nerdy, alcoholic south-side blond with anger issues. We all know how he fucked up the list is too much to get into for me, and yet, he, out of all of them,

he ends up being healthy and shit with a loving partner and a kid?

See what I mean?!

Now I mean, I'm not defending anything any of them did,

it's just, this damn show just puts such realistic but dramatically diabolical scenarios that lowkey make you feel better about yourself, and it does all this without even obnoxiously romanticizing things.

They're also so inclusive without being unnecessarily overbearing?!

And the casting is just perfect??

skip black sails season 1 this and skip mash seasons 1-3 that, it simply seems odd to not watch the establishing parts of a story the first time you watch said story because they aren’t as polished as later on (as they’re busy doing the establishing part), under the guise of considering them “less progressive”

#there's something here about yes engage with what you want and how you want depending on your limits and desires #but the way some people frame these things is... very odd #and i think has much less to do with degrees of sexism or violence and much more to do with wanting to skip to the main part of the story #but those parts aren't as good if you don't first go with the opening (which in both of these cases is very good actually)#it's this: if you don't like beginnings of stories much because they're too messy obvs go right ahead #but don't try to frame it as a choice based on morals about the contents of said story #it feels like people really want things to be fanfiction -- oh we already know the world we just want the [insert tropes]#i feel like i see this a lot with season ones and that is the devil talking -- that is the netflix model of binge binge binge #that doesn't let you engage with a slowly building story because you want something big to happen Right Away #there's an awful lot of disclaiming going on -- just watch the fuckn story and draw your own conclusions #if it's not a trigger then people will be fine #this is a sign that i need to go to bed #why in the World would you start with mash s4 when it literally opens with hawkeye's panicked response to trapper's leaving?#and then goes on to show us a hawkeye who is a changed man because of the events of the end of s3 #with characters regularly invoked?#and with relationships established (especially margaret's) that will be explored in-depth now that she's been firmly introduced #in many of her complexities?

The drama about Tushan Jing/YSQ not wanting to marry FFYY is a bit irritating at this point (ep 20-21 mark) because it could be pretty neatly solved (or, they could better avoid the marriage) if they just said out loud to each other, “I am in love with someone else, who I would rather marry.” Granted, TSJ might have a few concerns about FFYY marrying his excessively awful brother, but if they were just honest with each other for five seconds I’m sure they could cook up a plan to get themselves married to their preferred spouses REAL quick. They are both too smart for this!!

just to be clear:

The assertion that Ye Bingchang should never have expected to be the di wife is abjectly silly. We know for a fact that it almost happened, and the only reason it didn’t happen was because the marriage would have been too advantageous to the prince.

Certainly she would have been considered fortunate, but she was not born in an outer yard out-of-wedlock - she was a legitimate daughter born to an official concubine - and she was born to a powerful family. While her status wasn’t as high as the children of the official/first wife, she was degraded and oppressed to that extent because Ye Xiwu was a monster and everyone else in the house happily enabled her. Those social hierarchies in the courtyards allowed for that kind of abuse to happen - left people vulnerable to it - but it is explicit in canon that the marriage would not have been out of bounds and the only reason it didn’t happen was because, again, the Emperor was paranoid about making his son too powerful.

The Emperor lowered her status despite her being Sixth Prince’s first spouse to sow discord within the marriage, as even though her maternal family failed to care for her in any way outside of financial means the General was clearly enough of a traditionalist and watchful enough of his reputation to consider disrespect given to her as disrespect given to their family. The Emperor just underestimated Xiao Lin and overestimated her maternal family lmfao - although who knows what would have happened if peace continued long enough for pressure to start being put on Xiao Lin to get an official wife & heir. (Probably wouldn’t have happened too soon, as having a viable line of succession would likely make Sixth Prince look even better as a replacement/successor at least in the emperor’s fevered imagination.)

Trying to act as if she was trying to ~rise above her station and ~shouldn’t have expected it is just trying to rewrite canon.

Sometimes I wonder if Star Trek really became less Star Trek because science started to become more well known.

Like during the 1960s the idea of going to a planet full of gangsters was Wild but also possible?! To the average person. (The undereducated American that is)

Now it’s like “space is vast, cold and unfeeling” and that’s actually reflected in the filming. It’s like the writers forgot that the exploration of space was about possibility. To some extent that’s probably why they keep moving backwards in their shows and why anything forward feels nihilistic.

Or maybe it’s midnight and this was the last thing I decided to post while half asleep…
