Review: Dissolving Classroom
Tumblr media
Original title: Youkai Kyoushitsu
Author: Junji Ito
Date: 16/05/2023
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
________________________________________________________
I've had so many other books to finish lately that I put off reading "Dissolving Classroom" for a bit too long, especially considering it's a relatively short collection.
First and foremost, it is a collection of stories following a nasty little girl, Chizumi, who likes to torment people and her brother, Aizawa, who constantly apologizes in her name. As Aizawa keeps going over and beyond to express his shame for his sister's behavior, the people he issues his apologies to start dying as their brains turn to sludge.
Early on, Ito establishes that the siblings have struck a deal with the devil, but as the story progresses throughout different chapters, he switches up which one of them has made the bargain. In that way, Ito actually sets the main conflict behind the idea: Is it worse to do bad things without regret or to constantly apologize for them without promise of any change?
Aizawa is constantly trying to justify his actions and those of his sister, but he is stuck in a constant cycle. He keeps apologizing, but nothing in his behavior really changes. Chizumi is at least true to her horrid nature, but Aizawa draws pity from the people around him, as well as the reader, hoping for sympathy. He avoids confrontations, tries to escape from any consequences and keeps putting other people in danger even though he is well aware that his words have the power to destroy their brains.
He justifies his actions as a responsibility to his family. Ever since his parents died, he needs to take care of his sister. Moreover, he is seen as the successor of the family name, so he is responsible for protecting the family's pride. Chizumi puts all these obligations in direct jeopardy. Aizawa needs to step up in order to protect her and their legacy.
Family pride and subsequent shame are big elements in Japanese culture, and Ito uses them to portray the act of hollow apologies as physically decadent to the society. What use does an apology have if it is not going to be followed by true remorse and change in attitude? He illustrates this behavior as fraudulent, going as far as correlating it to the work of the devil, as he is a symbol of dishonesty, deceit, and corruption - the main attributes which make him the embodiment of evil. Therefore, Ito goes as far as to portray Aizawa's meek attempts of asking for forgiveness as sinful, immoral and harmful to society.
While I found the idea behind "Dissolving Classroom" interesting, the realization of it was quite bland. Some of the chapters are interlinked and build off of one another, while others weren't connected at all. The characters aren't very memorable either and I found Chizumi way too shallow for such a seemingly important character.
I am also somewhat critical of Ito's recent works which feature Christian symbolism. Some of the stories are solid, but I think that the use of the devil as the embodiment of evil in "Dissolving Classroom" is a cheap way to evoke horror in the reader. It's not very effective in making the fear believable either. The devil is perceived as a caricature, a passive bystander that seems to be forcefully pushed into the story in order for it to make sense. I think the story would have been better if he was simply left out.
I'd say "Dissolving Classroom" is one of Ito's weaker works. There's nothing very notable about the story, even though it had a promising idea behind it. I wouldn't really recommend it, especially to people who are searching for an introduction to his work.
