Haiti is fast descending into anarchy.
Over the weekend, the violence in the capital Port-au-Prince ramped up once again. Heavily armed gangs attacked the National Palace and set part of the Interior Ministry on fire with petrol bombs.
It comes after a sustained attack on the international airport, which remains closed to all flights - including one carrying Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
He tried to fly back to Haiti from the United States last week, but his plane was refused permission to land. He was then turned away from the neighbouring Dominican Republic too.
Mr Henry is now stuck in Puerto Rico, unable to set foot in the nation he ostensibly leads.
Among those who did manage to get into the stricken Caribbean nation, though, was a group of US military personnel.
Following a request from the US State Department, the Pentagon confirmed it had carried out an operation to, as it put it, "augment the security" of the US embassy in Port-au-Prince and airlift all non-essential staff to safety.
Soon after, the EU said it had evacuated all of its diplomats, fleeing a nation mired in violence and facing its biggest humanitarian crisis since the 2010 earthquake.
Millions of Haitians, however, simply don't have that luxury. They're trapped, no matter how bad things get.
The situation is dire at the State University of Haiti Hospital, known as the general hospital, in downtown Port-au-Prince. There is no sign of any medical staff at all.
A dead body, covered by a sheet and swarming with flies, lies in a bed next to patients waiting in vain for treatment.
Despite the overpowering stench, no-one has come to remove the body. It is rapidly decomposing in the Caribbean heat.
"There are no doctors, they all fled last week," said Philippe a patient who didn't want to give his real name.
"We can't go outside. We hear the explosions and gunfire. So, we must have courage and stay here, we can't go anywhere."
With no prime minister and a government in disarray, the gangs' power over the capital is near absolute.
They control more than 80% of Port-au-Prince and the country's most notorious gang leader, Jimmy "Barbecue" Chérizier has again told the prime minister to resign.
"If Ariel Henry doesn't step down and the international community continues to support him," he said last week, "they will lead us directly to a civil war which will end in genocide."
Meanwhile, the police, outnumbered and demoralised, are struggling to keep looters at bay. The Salomon police station in Port-au-Prince was attacked and burnt out, and charred police vehicles lie outside the still-smouldering building.

Haiti gangs demand PM resign after mass jailbreak
Nevertheless, even in the face of the total collapse of law and order, people must still venture out to make a living.
At a nearby market, several street hawkers told the BBC they had no other option but to leave their homes, even with gunmen roaming the streets.
"I have three kids, and I'm all they have - I'm their mother and their father," said Jocelyn, a market trader who also didn't want to give her real name.
"So, I'm obliged to take to the streets. Yesterday gunmen came here and stole all our money. A lot of vendors lost all their money. But there's no way to stay at home when you have three mouths to feed."
"The anxiety is killing me when I'm in the street," echoed an older woman selling fruit. "I keep thinking what if I get shot dead? Who will take care of my children then? I have no family to support me."
To the west, in one of Haiti's nearest neighbours, Jamaica, the dignitaries, diplomats and heads of state of the Caricom regional group are gathering for an emergency summit.
The instability in Haiti is a problem for the entire Caribbean community, and for Washington too. The idea of a nation of some 11 million people being run by gangs is of huge concern, particularly the potential impact on outward migration during an election year in the US.
It's clear Caricom favours seeing Mr Henry resign as soon as possible, from outside of the country if necessary.
The Biden administration in the US has publicly said the unelected prime minister - who had promised to hold an election in February - should return to Haiti, but only in order to stand down and begin a transition to a new government.
Privately, though, US diplomats are increasingly aware that it might now be impossible for him to return, and that even attempting to do so could further destabilise Haiti.
A UN-backed plan for a Kenyan-led rapid reaction force to tackle the gangs is still far from becoming a reality.
To add to the lawlessness, a week ago, around 4,000 inmates escaped after the gangs attacked the main prison in Port-au-Prince.
Those prisoners are now back on the streets and bolstering the ranks of their gangs.
In the aftermath, the cell doors are now wide open, the facility is virtually abandoned and there are blood stains on the ground after gunmen overpowered the guards.
A prime minister unable to return, violent gangs in control of the capital and dead bodies piling up on the streets: Haiti is currently a nation about as close to a failed state as it's possible to be.

Underground Tunnel Found Beneath Egyptian Temple May Lead to Cleopatra
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities have announced the incredible discovery of a rock-cut tunnel deep below ground in the area of the Taposiris Magna Temple, west of Alexandria in Egypt. The massive tunnel, which has been described as a ‘geometric miracle’ stretches over 1,300 meters (4,265 feet). The area has been under investigation in the search for the long-lost tomb of Queen Cleopatra .
The tunnel was discovered 13 meters (43 feet) underground by the Egyptian Dominican archaeological mission of the University of San Domingo, headed by Dr. Kathleen Martinez. During the excavations and archaeological survey of the tunnel a number of ceramic vessels and pots were found under mud sediment, as well as a rectangular block of limestone. Two heads made of alabaster were also found near the temple, one of which dates to the Ptolemaic period.
Part of the tunnel was found to be submerged underwater and this supports the theory that foundations of the Taposiris Magna Temple are also underwater. At least 23 earthquakes hit the Egyptian coast between 320 and 1303 AD, which would explain the collapse and submergence of part of the Taposiris Magna Temple.
The architectural design of the newly discovered tunnel resembles the magnificent Tunnel of Eupalinos on the Greek Island of Samos, which is considered one of the most important engineering achievements of the Classical world.
Taposiris Magna, The Great Tomb of Osiris
Taposiris Magna, which is a name meaning “great tomb of Osiris”, is an ancient city established by the pharaoh Ptolemy II between 280 and 270 BC. After Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in 332 BC and established Alexandria, the city of Taposiris Magna became a center for the religious festival of Khoiak. The Khoiak festival revolves around the legend of the god Osiris, who was murdered by his brother Seth, and revived by his sister-wife Isis, who conceived their son Horus.
The temple at Taposiris Magna was dedicated to Osiris, who was worshipped by Greek leaders in Egypt who honored the old traditions.
The Final Resting Place of Cleopatra?
For the past 14 years, Dr. Kathleen Martínez has been the head of excavations at Taposiris Magna. The discoveries made during that time have made her more and more certain that she is close to the long-lost tomb of Cleopatra VII and her lover Mark Antony . The famous ancient Egyptian queen’s proposed ties to the site has brought it to international headlines as new and intriguing finds and documentaries are made about the site every few years.
There have been many notable discoveries during the excavations. For example, in 2010, a huge headless granite statue of a Ptolemaic king was unearthed. Dr. Zahi Hawass believes that it probably belonged to Ptolemy IV and was dedicated to the god Osiris, stressing the link between the ancient site and the well-known ancient Egyptian god. Martinez said that the excavations have also found a beautiful statue head of Cleopatra, along with 22 coins bearing her image.
Behind the temple, a necropolis was discovered, containing many Greco-Roman style mummies who were buried with their faces turned towards the temple. This means it is likely the temple contained the burial of a significant royal personality, like Cleopatra.
Could the newly found underground tunnel lead archaeologists closer towards the tomb of Cleopatra and Mark Antony? Only time will tell!

SAINT OF THE DAY (October 22)
Tumblr media
Saint John Paul II is perhaps one of the most well-known pontiffs in recent history.
He is most remembered for his charismatic nature, his love of youth and his world travels, along with his role in the fall of communism in Europe during his 27-year papacy.
Karol Józef Wojtyla, known as John Paul II since his October 1978 election to the papacy, was born in the Polish town of Wadowice, a small city 50 kilometers from Krakow, on 18 May 1920.
He was the youngest of three children born to Karol Wojtyla and Emilia Kaczorowska.
His mother died in 1929. His eldest brother Edmund, a doctor, died in 1932. His father, a non-commissioned army officer, died in 1941. A sister, Olga, had died before he was born.
He was baptized on 20 June 1920 in the parish church of Wadowice by Fr. Franciszek Zak, made his First Holy Communion at age 9, and was confirmed at 18.
Upon graduation from Marcin Wadowita high school in Wadowice, he enrolled in Krakow's Jagiellonian University in 1938.
The Nazi occupation forces closed the university in 1939 and young Karol had to work in a quarry (1940-1944).
He then worked in the Solvay chemical factory to earn his living and to avoid being deported to Germany.
In 1942, aware of his call to the priesthood, he began courses in the clandestine seminary of Krakow, run by Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha, archbishop of Krakow.
At the same time, Karol Wojtyla was one of the pioneers of the "Rhapsodic Theatre," also clandestine.
After the Second World War, he continued his studies in the major seminary of Krakow, once it had re-opened, and in the faculty of theology of the Jagiellonian University.
He was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Sapieha in Krakow on 1 November 1946.
Shortly afterwards, Cardinal Sapieha sent him to Rome where he worked under the guidance of the French Dominican, Garrigou-Lagrange.
He finished his doctorate in theology in 1948 with a thesis on the subject of faith in the works of St. John of the Cross (Doctrina de fide apud Sanctum Ioannem a Cruce).
At that time, during his vacations, he exercised his pastoral ministry among the Polish immigrants of France, Belgium and Holland.
In 1948, he returned to Poland and was vicar of various parishes in Krakow as well as chaplain to university students.
This period lasted until 1951 when he again took up his studies in philosophy and theology.
In 1953, he defended a thesis on the "Evaluation of the possibility of founding a Catholic ethic on the ethical system of Max Scheler" at Lublin Catholic University.
He became professor of moral theology and social ethics in the major seminary of Krakow and in the Faculty of Theology of Lublin.
On 4 July 1958, he was appointed titular bishop of Ombi and auxiliary of Krakow by Pope Pius XII.
He was consecrated by Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak on 28 September 1958 in Wawel Cathedral, Krakow.
On 13 January 1964, he was appointed archbishop of Krakow by Pope Paul VI, who made him a cardinal on 26 June 1967 with the title of S. Cesareo in Palatio of the order of deacons, later elevated pro illa vice to the order of priests.
Besides taking part in Vatican Council II (1962-1965) where he made an important contribution to drafting the Constitution Gaudium et spes, Cardinal Wojtyla participated in all the assemblies of the Synod of Bishops.
The Cardinals elected him Pope at the Conclave of 16 October 1978. He took the name of John Paul II.
On October 22, the Lord's Day, he solemnly inaugurated his Petrine ministry as the 263rd successor to the Apostle.
His pontificate, one of the longest in the history of the Church, lasted nearly 27 years.
Driven by his pastoral solicitude for all Churches and by a sense of openness and charity to the entire human race, John Paul II exercised the Petrine ministry with a tireless missionary spirit, dedicating it all his energy.
He made 104 pastoral visits outside Italy and 146 within Italy. As Bishop of Rome, he visited 317 of the city's 333 parishes.
He had more meetings than any of his predecessors with the People of God and the leaders of Nations.
More than 17,600,000 pilgrims participated in the General Audiences held on Wednesdays (more than 1160), not counting other special audiences and religious ceremonies [more than 8 million pilgrims during the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 alone], and the millions of faithful he met during pastoral visits in Italy and throughout the world.
We must also remember the numerous government personalities he encountered during 38 official visits, 738 audiences and meetings held with Heads of State, and 246 audiences and meetings with Prime Ministers.
His love for young people brought him to establish the World Youth Days.
The 19 WYDs celebrated during his pontificate brought together millions of young people from all over the world.
At the same time, his care for the family was expressed in the World Meetings of Families, which he initiated in 1994.
John Paul II successfully encouraged dialogue with the Jews and with the representatives of other religions, whom he invited several times to prayer meetings for peace, especially in Assisi.
Under his guidance, the Church prepared herself for the third millennium and celebrated the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 in accordance with the instructions given in the Apostolic Letter Tertio Millennio adveniente.
The Church then faced the new epoch, receiving his instructions in the Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio ineunte in which he indicated to the faithful their future path.
With the Year of the Redemption, the Marian Year and the Year of the Eucharist, he promoted the spiritual renewal of the Church.
He gave an extraordinary impetus to Canonizations and Beatifications, focusing on countless examples of holiness as an incentive for the people of our time.
He celebrated 147 beatification ceremonies during which he proclaimed 1,338 Blesseds and 51 canonizations for a total of 482 saints.
He made Thérèse of the Child Jesus a Doctor of the Church.
He considerably expanded the College of Cardinals, creating 231 Cardinals (plus one in pectore) in 9 consistories.
He also called six full meetings of the College of Cardinals.
He organized 15 Assemblies of the Synod of Bishops — six Ordinary General Assemblies (1980, 1983, 1987, 1990, 1994, and 2001); one Extraordinary General Assembly (1985); and eight Special Assemblies (1980,1991, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 (2), and 1999).
His most important Documents include 14 Encyclicals, 15 Apostolic Exhortations, 11 Apostolic Constitutions, 45 Apostolic Letters.
He promulgated the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the light of Tradition as authoritatively interpreted by the Second Vatican Council.
He also reformed the Eastern and Western Codes of Canon Law, created new Institutions, and reorganized the Roman Curia.
As a private Doctor, he also published five books of his own: "Crossing the Threshold of Hope" (October 1994), "Gift and Mystery, on the fiftieth anniversary of my ordination as priest" (November 1996), "Roman Triptych" poetic meditations (March 2003), "Arise, Let us Be Going" (May 2004) and "Memory and Identity" (February 2005).
In the light of Christ risen from the dead, on 2 April A.D. 2005, at 9:37 pm, while Saturday was drawing to a close and the Lord's Day was already beginning, the Octave of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday, the Church's beloved Pastor, John Paul II, departed this world for the Father.
From that evening until April 8, date of the funeral of the late Pontiff, more than three million pilgrims came to Rome to pay homage to the mortal remains of the Pope.
Some of them queued up to 24 hours to enter St. Peter's Basilica.
On April 28, the Holy Father Benedict XVI announced that the normal five-year waiting period before beginning the cause of beatification and canonization would be waived for John Paul II.
The cause was officially opened by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, vicar general for the diocese of Rome, on 28 June 2005. He was beatified on 1 May 2011.
On 27 April 2014, he was canonized by Pope Francis during a ceremony in St. Peter's Square.
In an April 24 message sent to the Church in Poland, Pope Francis gave thanks for the 'great gift' of the new Saint, saying of John Paul II that he is grateful, "as all the members of the people of God, for his untiring service, his spiritual guidance, and for his extraordinary testimony of holiness."

Ricardo: Auror and then Game Developer
After he was rescued from the Portrait Vault, he went with the group back to the school. Moody sought him out and recruited him soon afterward. Ricardo agreed to work with him under a few conditions.
He struck a deal with the Ministry where he'd work for them if they cleared his name of the lies they spread about him in the past. He'd serve as one of the key players in taking down R.
Briefly dated Chester but then got dumped by him. One solo trip to Las Vegas later, Ricardo became a single father to a baby girl he named Rel (born February 22, 1994). She inherited his Metamorphmagus abilities.
Bought his dream vehicle and traveled across the country for a few years. Put his Ministry work on hold to focus on fatherhood.
Reconnected with Kazuhiro (an undercover Auror who also helped in R's takedown) and moved to Japan in 1996.
Started his own company called Studio Dreamscape to follow his true dreams of being a game developer.
They'd create and publish a candy-themed racing game in 1997 named Candy Hollow. It was a hit and would go on to become a successful franchise.
****
Felt great lining and coloring these in SAI again. Final little details were added in Clip Studio on my PC. Ricardo's gun doesn't look like it makes much sense, but do know it's made from magic, has three barrels in the shape of a heart and can fire magic bullets. Unseen but he wields two guns. Dude loves rainbows and designed it himself.

Name: Leo Torres
Birthday: 6th November 1972
Gender: Male, he/him
Sexuality: Bi
Ethnicity: Dominican/Indian
Quidditch Position: Seeker
Closest friends: Rowan, Charlie, Jackie (friends MC), Ben
Romances: Chiara(4th year to 5th year) Tonks(6th year to present)
(HPHM SPOILERS)
Bio: Leo was born in Ireland, with an older brother by 10 years, Jacob Torres. Like his brother, Leo was incredibly skilled with magic at even a young age, and a legilimens. Death Eaters heard about this, and decided to take him and raise him to be on their side, as he could be a powerful weapon. So at the age of 5, he was taken by Death Eaters, and stayed with them for little under a year until he was rescued by the order. While with the death eaters, he was looked after by Narcissa Malfoy, and his brothers close friend Regulus Black. Leo’s mother had hidden the realities of the war from him, so he had no idea what side he was on. Although his time there was less than pleasant, he had fond memories of Narcissa, she tried to protect him the best she could. After Leo’s second year of Hogwarts, he occasionally visited the Malfoys, babysitting Draco. After Leo had been rescued, his parents had a falling out and divorced. Not long after they moved to England, to be closer to his mothers family. Jacob disappeared when Leo was 6 years old, and Leo met Tonks and Charlie not long after.
Once Leo started Hogwarts, he was sorted into Slytherin alongside his new friend Rowan. Leo spent his whole first year trying to be himself and detach himself from people’s perception of his brother. Although that didn’t work, and once second year began, he started searching for cursed vaults as his brother had done. Dumbledore never truly tried to stop him or any of his friends, and by fourth year, Leo realised he was being used.
Finding Jacob didn’t go the way Leo had hoped. He was glad to see his brother again, but being stuck in a cursed portrait for 7 years was not good for Jacobs mental health. He had slowly gone mad in there, and it would take him a long time to readjust to society.
Rowan’s death hit Leo the worst, as he blamed himself. If he’d just joined R immediately, they wouldn’t have targeted his friends. This feeling became worse once he discovered his father was the leader of R. Leo considered joining R, momentarily, to protect his friends. But he thought himself a coward for even considering it for a second. Him and the circle of Khanna tried to defeat R, but they were unsuccessful. Although R did go into hiding once the ministry almost found them.
After school, Leo and Tonks became Aurors together, and moved in together not long after they graduated. After the Second Wizarding War began, Leo and Tonks joined the order. Unfortunately, after the mass breakout of Azkaban, Leo was sent in as spy on the death eaters. Narcissa knew he was a spy instantly, as he would never join the death eaters. She helped him, the best she could, although Leo was unable to go home to Tonks. He moved back into his childhood home, only seeing Tonks when he checked in with the order. In 1997, Leo and Tonks got married in secret, and by 1998, they had their first son, Teddy. At the Battle of Hogwarts, Leo was able to fight for the Order, and the death eaters trusting him was his advantage.
After the war, Leo tried to reconnect with his brother, as both their parents died during the war. Jacob was still struggling, but he was grateful for a connection with his brother.

President Dr. François Duvalier (April 14, 1907 - April 21, 1971) known as “Papa Doc,” was the president of Haiti (1957-71). His regime was notorious for its autocratic and corrupt rule.
Born in Port-au-Prince, he was the son of Duval Duvalier and Uritia Abraham. He wrote articles for the nationalist and anti-American occupation newspaper, Action Nationale under the name Abderrahman. He attended medical school at the University of Haiti and worked at various hospitals and clinics around the city. He participated in the US-sponsored campaigns against malaria and yaws.
He co-founded the journal Les Griots. The journal promoted Négritude and championed the Black minority against the Europeanized mixed-race elite. He asserted in his book, Le Problème des classes à travers l’histoire d’Haïti, that the Black middle class should declare its power and overthrow the elite mulatto hegemony. He served in the Ministries of Public Health and Labor. When a bloodless coup in 1950 elevated Colonel Paul Magloire to the Presidency, he went into hiding.
Riots had forced Magloire to resign and he presented himself as the heir to Estimé’s reformist government. He won the 1957 election. He silenced opposition and began distributing self-promoting propaganda. He reorganized the armed forces and created a secret police, the Milice Volontaires de la Sécurité Nationale, or the Tontons Macoutes. Giving the Tontons Macoutes the license to intimidate, extort, and murder, the militia quieted opponents and forcibly bolstered support for the president. He defeated an attempted coup and survived a major heart attack.
He intensified his campaign of terror and hundreds of Haitians were arrested, beaten, or simply disappeared. His corrupt policies killed thousands of Haitians as food shortages became rampant.
His supporters drafted a new constitution that declared him president for life. He resisted foreign criticism. He challenged Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the US, leaving the country with few political allies. He maintained his presidency until his death. His son, Jean-Claude Duvalier, succeeded him. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT VINCENT FERRER The Patron of Builders and Construction Workers Feast Day: April 5
"If you truly want to help the soul of your neighbor, you should approach God first with all your heart. Ask him simply to fill you with charity, the greatest of all virtues; with it you can accomplish what you desire."
One of the greatest preachers of the Dominican order and dubbed the 'Angel of the Last Judgment', Vincent Ferrer was born on January 23, 1350 in Valencia.
From his parents (Guillem Ferrer and Constanca Miquel), he learned to love the poor, to fast on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and to have intense devotion to Jesus and Mary. Legends surround Vincent's birth. It was said that his father was told in a dream by a Dominican friar that his son would be famous throughout the world. His mother is said never to have experienced pain when she gave birth to him. He was named after Vincent Martyr, the patron saint of Valencia.
After joining the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) at the age of 18, he soon became a famous preacher, and everywhere, his lectures and sermons met with extraordinary success.
Vincent said to his fellow priests: 'In your sermons, use simple language and precise examples. Each sinner in your congregation should feel moved as though you were preaching to him alone. An abstract discourse hardly inspires those who listen.'
Vincent traveled throughout Europe, preaching mainly on sin, death, hell, eternity and the speedy approach of the day of judgement. He spoke with such energy that most of the listeners confessed their sins and repented from their sinful life. Several priests traveled with him, helping the saint in his ministry.
He instructed them in this fashion: 'When hearing confession, you should always radiate the warmest charity. Whether you are gently encouraging the fainthearted or putting the fear of God into the hardheaded, the penitent should feel that you are motivated only by pure love.'
On April 5, 1419 in Vannes, while delivering his last sermon, Vincent died at the age of 69. He was buried in Vannes Cathedral and was canonized as a saint by Pope Calixtus III in 1455.

Hello everyone, this week we will be looking at the basics of the education system of Dominica. Primary and secondary school are public resources in Dominica, with school attendance being compulsory from ages five through seventeen. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any information on graduation rates, or statistics on continuing education. I was able to find out that completion of secondary education (high school) is done by passing a standardized test, administered by the CEC (Caribbean Examinations Council) which is the joint governing body for most Caribbean nations.
This link will take you to an overview of the education of 2009, that was published in 2020. It provides a few statistics about enrollment in primary and secondary education, as well as the names of the post-secondary schools within the Caribbean region.
This link will take you to a different overview that describes the number and types of schools, and the basic grading system.
Outside of that I couldn’t find any real information about the daily life of students, other than official government channels.
This link shows a video about the way the Dominican education ministry is dealing with the continued risks of covid-19 in classrooms from earlier this year.
Sadly, that is all I could find as the rest of the links were all for expats, people seeking to obtain citizenship through investment, or those seeking to attend nursing school from African nations.

Tomas hurricane track

#Tomas hurricane track skin
Keep track of hurricane Tomas on our 2010 Atlantic hurricane season page. How powerful hurricane Tomas gets we won’t know for a couple of days but some forecasters are saying it could be an extremely dangerous storm. At this stage it’s difficult to say exactly where Tomas will aim it’s fury but Jamaica is one island that is right in the middle of the forecast cone of uncertainty at the moment. On the current forecast track Tomas is likely to bring hurricane force winds to St Lucia.Īfter passing through the Leeward Islands hurricane Tomas will be over warm water and with low wind shear is expected to intensify and could become a powerful and large hurricane by Tuesday or Wednesday next week. After that Tomas will probably be a Category 1 hurricane and will head towards St Vincent and St Lucia, currently forecast to pass between the islands. Tomas is currently passing just to the south of Barbados, who can expect to feel tropical storm force winds and experience 3 to 5 inches of rain. Tomas, the 19th named storm of the season, will be hurricane Tomas within a few hours and is going to threaten the Caribbean. It is extremely unusual to have such a large storm so far south this late in the season. Tropical storm Tomas formed yesterday, very far south for the time of year. Tomas track on Atlantic Ocean SST image of 3 November (243 Kb) This image represents the average composite sea surface temperature (SST) derived from NOAA satellite AVHRR data over the 7 days ending 3 November 2010. The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season is proving to be one of the most unpredictable on record. Hurricane Tomas Track maps Tomas developed in the tropical Atlantic Ocean east of Barbados. PAHO is continuing to monitor the situation.Update: For our latest on Hurricane Tomas please view this post. Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Cayman Islands are potentially vulnerable.

Prevention of outbreaks from water/food, vector borne and skin illness is also a priority.Īlthough Hurricane Tomas has been downgraded to a tropical storm, it is expected the system will re-strengthen as it moves through the Caribbean Sea. Preliminary reports highlight the needs for the provision of safe drinking water to ensure continuity of health delivery services and re-establishing critical services offered by the now decommissioned Dennery hospital. Some great items to pack/have on hand during hurricane season are candles, matches/lighter, flashlight with extra batteries, and bottled water. There are emergency plans in place to keep everyone safe. PAHO is participating in an inter-agency Rapid Needs Assessment Team (RNAT) in Saint Lucia to assess the country's current situation. Even if you are in Cancun when a hurricane hits, dont panic. In Saint Lucia for example, the Dennery Hospital has been decommissioned due to damage and Soufriere hospital is limited to pedestrian access. The Ministries of Health of the affected countries report damages to road network, health facilities, and water supply. Initial reports from Saint Lucia indicate seven (7) confirmed causalities as major flooding and landslides displaced hundreds of individuals, damaged road and bridge infrastructure, destroyed several water supply facilities, disrupted electricity and telecommunication services, and left some communities completely isolated (e.g. However conditions in Saint Lucia, where rainfall measured >500 mm (21") in 24 hrs, require urgent attention. There were no casualties reported and conditions appear to be stabilizing. Vincent and the Grenadines has seen damage to approximately 1200 homes (14 destroyed), disruptions to power supplies, and devastation to their agricultural sector. While continuing to strengthen, Tomas turned northwestward and its forward speed slowed as it approached the Windward Islands. The best track positions and intensities are listed in Table 11. 1, with the wind and pressure histories shown in Figs. Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia. The best track chart of the path of Tomas is given in Fig. Although a number of countries issued tropical storm and/or hurricane warnings (including Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Martinique, Barbados, Dominica), the brunt of damage thus far, has been concentrated in St. Initially forming on October 29, Tomas oscillated between tropical depression and hurricane strength more than once during its 10-day lifespan. Originating southeast of the Windward Islands on October 29th, 2010 Tomas rapidly developed into a Category-1 hurricane bringing excessive rainfall and harsh winds to parts of the eastern Caribbean. Superimposed on the rainfall amounts is the storm track, with darker shades of orange corresponding with greater storm intensity.

If I were compensated for this, I would be able to put the time in ahead of the daily tidbits thus having additional & better resources and more in-depth details. Such articles would be on Medium for the extended Today’s Tidbits. If you can, consider helping me out with this goal by donating via Venmo or PayPal or buying a Numerology Reading. Thank you!

Karol Józef Wojtyla, known as John Paul II since his October 1978 election to the papacy, was born in the Polish town of Wadowice, a small city 50 kilometers from Krakow on 18 May 1920.
Upon graduation from Marcin Wadowita high school in Wadowice, he enrolled in Krakow's Jagiellonian University in 1938 and in a school for drama.
The Nazi occupation forces closed the university in 1939. The young Karol had to work in a quarry (1940-1944) and then in the Solvay chemical factory to earn his living and to avoid being deported to Germany.
After the Second World War, he continued his studies in the major seminary of Krakow once it had re-opened and in the faculty of theology of the Jagiellonian University.
In 1948, he returned to Poland. He was vicar of various parishes in Krakow as well as chaplain to university students. This period lasted until 1951 when he again took up his studies in philosophy and theology.
In 1953, he defended a thesis on "Evaluation of the possibility of founding a Catholic ethic on the ethical system of Max Scheler" at Lublin Catholic University.
He later became professor of moral theology and social ethics in the major seminary of Krakow and in the Faculty of Theology of Lublin.
On 4 July 1958, he was appointed titular bishop of Ombi and auxiliary of Krakow by Pope Pius XII.
He was consecrated on 28 September 1958 in Wawel Cathedral, Krakow, by Archbishop Eugeniusz Baziak.
On 13 January 1964, he was appointed archbishop of Krakow by Pope Paul VI, who made him a cardinal on 26 June 1967, with the title of S.
His love for young people brought him to establish the World Youth Day. The 19 WYDs celebrated during his pontificate brought together millions of young people from all over the world.
At the same time, his care for the family was expressed in the World Meetings of Families, which he initiated in 1994.
John Paul II successfully encouraged dialogue with the Jews and with the representatives of other religions, whom he several times invited to prayer meetings for peace, especially in Assisi.
He organized 15 Assemblies of the Synod of Bishops - six Ordinary General Assemblies (1980, 1983, 1987, 1990, 1994 and 2001), one Extraordinary General Assembly (1985) and eight Special Assemblies (1980, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 (2) and 1999).
He also reformed the Eastern and Western Codes of Canon Law, created new Institutions and reorganized the Roman Curia.
In the light of Christ risen from the dead, on 2 April 2005 at 9:37 p.m., while Saturday was drawing to a close and the Lord's Day was already beginning, the Octave of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday, the Church's beloved Pastor, John Paul II, departed this world for the Father.
In an April 24 message sent to the Church in Poland, Pope Francis gave thanks for the great gift of the new Saint, saying of John Paul II that he is grateful, “as all the members of the people of God, for his untiring service, his spiritual guidance, and for his extraordinary testimony of holiness.”

Ancient Mummies with Golden Tongues Discovered in Egypt
Archaeologists have unearthed 2,000-year-old mummies with golden tongues placed inside their mouths in northern Egypt, the antiquities ministry says.
An Egyptian-Dominican team working at Alexandria's Taposiris Magna temple discovered 16 burials in rock-cut tombs popular in the Greek and Roman eras.
Inside were poorly-preserved mummies.
It is thought the dead were given gold foil amulets shaped like tongues so that they could speak before the court of the god Osiris in the afterlife.
Ancient Egyptians believed that Osiris was lord of the underworld and judge of the dead.
The god was also pictured in gilded decorations on the cartonnage - a material made of layers of plaster, linen and glue - that was partially encasing one of the mummies, lead archaeologist Kathleen Martinez of the University of Santo Domingo was cited by the antiquities ministry as saying.
The gilded decorations on the cartonnage around a second mummy's head depicted a crown, horns and a cobra snake, she added. On the chest, the decorations depicted a necklace from which hung the head of a falcon - the symbol of the god Horus.
Khaled Abo El Hamd, director general of the antiquities authority in Alexandria, said the archaeological mission at Taposiris Magna had also discovered the funeral mask of a woman, eight golden flakes of a golden wreath, and eight marble masks dating back to the Greek and Roman eras.
The antiquities ministry said a number of coins bearing the name and portrait of Queen Cleopatra VII had previously been found inside the temple.
Cleopatra VII was the last queen of the Greek-speaking Ptolemaic dynasty, ruling Egypt from 51-30 BC. After her death, Egypt fell under Roman domination.
