i’ve been hiding in trees and bushes to avoid people for almost my entire life, and i have the instinctual reaction to freeze, and stay completely still (excluding breathing). i can do this for upwards of 20 minutes without struggle if i know someone’s nearby and looking for me.

with this knowledge, i can say, with certainty, that the ranger method of “just stay still” is incredibly effective in almost every situation. not necessarily to the point they play it up to in the books, but it genuinely does work.

just curl up, wear clothes that don’t clash with the environment, don’t be where they expect, and

don’t.

avoid being at eye height if you can, but i once made direct eye contact with someone who was looking for me in the forest and they skipped straight past me anyways because they were looking for a moving, breathing, person, not a statue.

So, some time ago the Ranger Corps discord made a bunch of headcanons about this Irish wolfhound that the o’carrick kids had. (Proud to say that I came up with it, and the other made wonderful additions to it). We ended up naming him Madra, which is Irish for “Dog”. (Caitlyn, the one who named him, was really young when they got him, ok).

finding out books you read at a comparatively young age are considered “YA” or “teen” is incredibly strange. i read full novels by the age of 7, and i had no idea that was in any way different from what other kids my age were doing. maybe i was lonely as a kid, but reading novels cover to cover on my own with minimal assistance was very normal, and even expected from my family. i read The Hobbit at age 8, all by myself, and i know several children aged 7 who can’t even read Dr Seuss with confidence. i read The Secret Garden, Oliver Twist, several full series of books… and i never though it strange that i’d read them before the age of 10. and now i’m looking at my cousins and other kids around me wondering if literacy rates have fallen that drastically or if i was a complete anomaly.

Oh boy grief over the death of a child is probably the worst feeling for me, especially when you were a child with them and now they’re gone and you’re not and you’ve aged and they haven’t. I’m gonna be 33 and you’ll always be 10 and in my head I’ll always be 7 in relation to you and somehow that makes it worse. I try so hard to not daydream about what you’d be like and what our relationship would look like but literally just seeing a older brother younger sister duo sends me into tears over my oatmeal.
