Whenever someone mentions the serial killer "Cutthroat", he's just like "eh, whatever"

He doesn't even consider the possibility of it being you

If he were to find out, he would freak the eff out and never see you again

But as long as you're careful, you shouldn't have to worry about it

Another one who doesn't pay much attention to the serial killers of today

He doesn't even watch the news

So you just looked like a regular ass person when he saw you

And a weird ass, as well

Your strange obsession with the color red freaked him out

He also found it weird that you always wore white and often acted like a child

You were actually kind of annoying at first

But he fell for you

Your childishness was a lot to get used to, but Mondo learned to love it

It's not too likely that he'll find out the truth about you

But if he finds out it's true, he gets pretty freaking mad

It might not be enough to make him dump you, but he's not too happy that you didn't tell him

If it happens to be on, he gets curious, but he immediately turns it off when some dark and scary shit is brought up

So he's probably heard your name once or twice, but he tries not to pay much mind to it

He tries to avoid the serial killer stuff though

So he has heard your name, and your style of murder, but he doesn't know exactly what you look like

So when he sees you in public, he doesn't think too much of it

Though you do seem a bit strange, but he's not one to judge a book by his cover, so he introduces himself anyway!

You're actually not that bad

Your fascination with the color red is very interesting to him

And your compliments about his eyes makes his face turn the same color, but he appreciates it

Your childishness kind of throws him off a bit, but he'll get used to it

Hearing you hum children's rhymes makes him smile

Out of everyone, Taka is the most likely to figure out the truth

The more he learns about Cutthroat, the more he realizes how alike the two of you are

The thought of it horrifies him, and he's in very rough denial

I mean, we saw how he reacted when he found out Mondo killed Chihiro

But eventually, he'll have to face the truth

He's torn between doing the right thing, or helping you get the help you need

It's just a messy situation overall

In the end, he'll probably choose option two

He wants to give you a second chance

He wants you to get help and change your ways

He loves you too much to give up on you, even after everything

Henry Stickmin Headcanons Part 2, to "celebrate" the finale of the Toppat!Charles AU(Press F to pay respects). I'll be going in and oit of the AU as well, but that will be seperate from the other headcanons

In Triple Threat, and in order, the tallest is Ellie, standing at 5'9" and Henry is the shortest at 5'4". Charles sits comfortably between them at 5'7". Neither use their powers for evil, even though it's tempting to literally something over his head sometimes.

Each member of Triple Threat has their reactions toward horror in general.

Charles is pretty unfazed by games like FNAF or anything with heavy jumpscares. He will not watch a movie with bad jumpscares(jumpscares used poorly.) He was a baby watching Sinister, The VVitch, and Lighthouse.

Ellie gets scared by just about anything, but breaks whenever she sees evil clowns specifically.

Nothing really scares Henry. Or at least he tells himself that. He's less open by getting scared, but don't tell Ellie or Charles.

Ellie and Heney, because they were in a mischief mood, tried scaring Charles. He punched Henry in the face on accident.

Charles sings really well, but only when he thinks there's no one around.

Ellie is the smartest of the trio. That doesn't mean Charles and Henry are idiots, even though they've done things that have warranted them a spot in the dumbass hall of fame.

When Rupert first joined, he'd literally never been more annoyed than when he met Charles, who, in his opinion, talked too much and didn't take anything seriously. It didn't really help that Galeforce always partnered the two, as to keep Charles safe on the ground when he couldn't directly see him. Rupert was mad at the fact he'd gone through a lot of training and was promoted to government babysitter, and it boiled out of him when Charles asked if he was okay. Rupert snapped at him, shouting at the pilot to just shut up for five minutes and actually do his part in missions, which was have Rupert's back or keep him informed of anything around them. He also yelled that Charles is incompetent and shouldn't even be in the military, as all he does is talk. He had brought this up with Galeforce, when the two got back and Charles excused himself to allow Rupert to give the report on their mission, but got a very proper scolding. He apologized to Charles when the YOUNGEST PILOT EVER got them both out of a sticky situation using some incredibly evasive maneuvers that Rupert was sure would get them killed.

After the deaths and funeral of Mr. And Mrs. Calvin, Galeforce adopted Charles, something that was in the couple's will. Charles did not talk to him for a long time, not until a rainy day that prevented any work that needed to be done. Galeforce noticed Charles sitting near either a patio door or by a window staring up at the clouds. He carefully sat next to him and admitted that he missed Charles's parents, too, saying they were very good friends of his and were always good to turn to for a smile or just to take a breather. He couldn't imagine how Charles felt, but he still missed them and was sorry all the same. That's when Galeforce noticed a card Charles was holding to his chest; a birthday card, one that read, "Charlie, if you're reading this, know that your father and I love you very much. No matter what, always remember that. We couldn't have asked for a better son, one as silly, smart, and ambitious as you. We will always love you. I'm sorry. Love, Mom," from Charles's mother and, "Hey, hawk. If you're reading this, it means something really bad happened to us both. Sorry we won't make it back for your birthday, more specifically that I broke my promise to you. You deserve to be happy, and I hope you can do that again someday. Charles, you can miss us, you can be sad, you can cry, it's more than okay to. I just hope one day you can smile and be happy again for us. I'm sorry. Your mother loves you, Charlie. I love you so much, son. Love, Dad," from Charles's father. There smugdes on some parts of the card, some old and some new, and it especially struck Galeforce that the two extremely sad messages shouldn't have been on a nine year old's birthday card. Galeforce apologized for not being Charles's parents, though told him that he'd try to be what they were, maybe more. He didn't talk, but Charles did huddle closer to his side and Galeforce put an arm around him as they continued watching the rain.

Do not challenge Charles to a foot race. He will outrun you.

Do not challenge Ellie to an arm wrestling match. She will always win.

Do not challenge Henry to an underwater how-long-can-I-hold-my-breathe challenge. You will most likely drown.

Triple Threat beat each other in their respective challenges/contests by cheating/sabotaging each other; Henry will try tackling Charles while Ellie will try to trip him, Charles will try kicking Ellie's chair to push it away while Henry teams up with him to try and push her arm down, and Ellie will throw little pool torpedoes at Henry, which is more passive than Charles shouting, "This is the greatest PLAAAAAAN!" and cannonballing in before wrestling Henry back above water.

Charles wakes up Ellie and Henry in various methods, since he's usually up first: He'll usually use an alarm, but sometimes, when he's really energetic, he bangs pots and pans together, gets a teakettle singing, uses and airhorn, and, the most extreme he's ever gone, taped a brown lunch bag to a leaf blower and brought a really bright light into both their rooms, rigging the devices to a light switch. With a snicker, he began to play that army/military wake up song on a trumpet with a megaphone taped to it and flipped the switch.

Both of them were ready to kill him.

Henry was initially left at an orphanage, but he was adopted at the age of seven. He was brought up well enough, until one of his parents started noticing that he was acting "weird," as in his 'ability' to see his choices and fails. This parent started ignoring him and told him to start acting normal or he'd be sent back to the orphanage. The other parent, the one that also noticed but didn't want to talk about it, still loved him, though started to get a little irritated when their partner left out of spite; "Either I go or the crazy brat goes." The other parent re-married and this new step-parent was nicer, but happened to wirk as a janitor for the CCC, and warned Henry to be careful with his 'powers' because the people the step-parent worked for weren't nice and would do bad things to him. The step-parent meant well, but Henry, having the memories of the parent that left fresh in his mind, took it as a threat to behave, which made him a very anxious kid. Anxious enough to become a kleptomaniac and pickpocket to relieve stress.

Ellie had the most normal life, having two parents and a brother, but turned to a life of thieving because the pressure of being a good person and her family's view of a black and white world drove her crazy.

You would have to be crazy to try and take on all three members of Triple Threat at once.

The trio sometimes share a room and bed, because of nightmares and they don't want to be alone.

Yeah. Triple Threat is basically a found family.

Ellie is the father and Henry and Charles are her two, wonderful, dumbass children, even though there are times the two take turns being the mother.

Now, ONTO SOME POST TOPPAT!CHARLES AU STUFF! This is kind of like an Epilogue, so buckle in.

Triple Threat gets two weeks off to fully recover. (Thank goodness)

They return to their apartment and go straight to bed, though they actually just camp out in the living room.

They still sleep like the dead; they wake up LATE the next day, at 4 in the afternoon.

Breakfast for dinner.

Even when they know they should go back to sleep around 10 pm, they stay up and watch movies. They let Charles pick, and he chooses a collection of Looney Tunes, Merry Melodies, and even the Looney Tunes Show.

Henry and Ellie notice him giggling whenever Daffy's on screen, and can't help but wonder why, though they don't ask when he also gets tears in his eyes. He explains later that he used to watch the old version of Looney Tunes and Merry Melodies with his parents and even Galeforce, sometimes, even though it was something that happened less frequently as Charles grew and became a more solid part of the military.

They stay up all night, taking turns watching movies, making small talk, and just enjoying each other's company.

Charles does have an episode when they're making lunch the next day when he accidentally drops a glass and has a flashback of Right killing the pilot of a destroyer sent to rescue him. It is a nerve wracking memory and it leads him to breaking down on the floor. Henry and Ellie do help him out of it, but he refuses to share what he saw with them. They don't push it and tell him to feel free to share whenever he's ready.

They keep an eye on him when he takes his ADD medicine, just to be safe.

They often go outside to do workouts, because they don't want to break anything in the apartment. Charles keeps up with them, and they simply enjoy the breeze and the outside when they're done.

Henry and Ellie do talk about what she told Henry back in Part 6, and she apologizes for not telling Henry sooner, also admitting that she was scared he would abandon her, if she told him. Needless to say, Henry's just glad the three of them are together.

Charles is welcomed back much more warmly when they return from their break.

First daybback and it's out of the frying pan and into the flame, because they have another group of thieves to deal with, smaller than the Toppat Clan, but still noticable: a biker gang that's here to steal stuff by any means necessary and be an insane headache for police and people on the road.

They don't know much now, but they will when the gang is followed in the air.

Galeforce offers Charles to fly and get some possible intell, though says that if he isn't comfortable with it he can back out.

Charles agrees, and says with an excited, nervous smile that he's missed being in the air.

Galeforce makes sure Henry and Ellie keep an eye on him, which they promise to do, before everyone sets out, Charles taking a seat in his fixed up helicopter with Henry and Ellie behind him.

With a deep breath, they head out, ready to do some government recon, which they're successful in.

At The Wall, Dmitri is grumbly and still a little pissed at how Henry got away AGAIN, but has to admit it's good to not have to worry about the Toppat Clan anymore, most of whom being in maximum security cells.

Right is bored as hell, but is glad that his cellmate is Reginald; Right's missing his cybernetic arm from the elbow down, his legs have been downgraded to be normal legs, and he is no longer OP.

Reg apologizes for letting this happen to the clan, but Right assures him it's not his fault, self deprecatingly admitting that he may have been stupid for MAYBE crossing the line. Reg can't help but softly chide him for it.

Right promises that they'll get out, though Reginald only snuggles into him more, saying it can happen in good time, but right now he just wants to be close to Right a little longer.

The CCC hasn't gotten a single major chaos reading since the orbital station was destroyed and the clan was arrested. Bill Bullet chuckles a simple, "Not bad, kid," as he leaves his readers to their work.

Terrence is kicking back in his new room, lying in a bed as he reads a book. He's enjoyed having regular, warm showers, access to a razor to shave, and, mostly, a sky that didn't have the orbital station in it; it leaves a bad taste in his mouth that Reginald actually outdid him, sending the clan in space for a short time.

He chuckles at the fact that Henry would've been a damned good leader, mostly because he could see overthrowing HIM to be easy. "Too bad he joined the government instead," Terrence sighs with a shrug before he burts into laughter, mad, hysterical laughter. It really would've been fun to see Henry as the leader of the Toppat Clan.😉

Back with Triple Threat, after their mission as they sit on a hill that would've held Charles grave, if this was Valiant Hero. They're quiet, enjoying the sunset and the sound of the waves below, not ready to go home yet.

Even though they're all quiet, Charles tips his head back and takes a deep breath, taking in the sun, the air, everything, before returning his gaze to the sunset.

"Man," he breathes, "I've... really missed this."

Ellie replies that she has as well, Henry nodding in agreement.

They all watch the remainder of the sunset, though, quite nicely, all three are holding each other's hands and smiling to themselves

this guy considers you cheering on him from the bleachers as a date. but you don't mind if it makes him happy. you also use the opportunity to hang out with iwa and the other friends you made on the team.

study dates. lots of them. he often is so focused on volleyball that he forgets all about his other responsibilities. he often sulks that you are much cleverer than him but really appreciates your help. those study dates often turn into 3rd year hangouts though as the others need as much help as oikawa does and oikawa bragges about how good you teached him (he can't stop the others from tagging along).

he tries to teach you volleyball sometimes. well, not teaching but showing off his own skills so you would compliment him. he is a sucker for your compliments and attention. so your admiration as you observed him was like a drug for him.

he acts all cheery and flirty in public but when the two of you were alone, he actually let go of the act. he loved to be comforted by you and you see him crying on a regular basis.

'you are the only one to see this side of me, so you better keep it a secret, y/n-chan.' he would say after one of those days.

Summary-Will gets an dog to help with some problems he’s having, Will can’t find his confidence to talk to his friends.

The only person who knew was Gee.

She was his roommate so it'd be a bit awkward if he got a dog and didn't tell her.

She had noticed Will's behaviour and how odd he was acting. His mood and energy becoming low. She noticed, as his editor, how many more mistakes he was making in his videos and how many jokes and comments he told her to cut out because he didn't think it was funny enough. But it was. It was always comments Gee knew his fans would find funny.

So, when Gee suggested he got some help, she expected him to throw a fit or something. She was actually presently surprised when Will responded saying he was already talking to someone. When he sat down with her one night for dinner, he explained the idea of an emotional support animal. Gee was over the moon with the idea of Will getting extra support and encouraged an ESA.

So, when Will came back to the flat with a golden retriever puppy (After three searches round their flat and a series of sessions with his therapist), Gee wasn't surprised.

Will explained to her how the small dog's name was Otis and how he helped with his panic attacks and stressful situations.

A week later only Will's family knew about Otis but that was all about to change.

Will was having a particularly bad day and Gee convinced him to take Otis to Alex and George's place for a video. Will didn't want to but knew he would benefit with Otis coming along.

When Will arrived in front of Alex and George's he almost backed out and texted them to tell them he couldn't make it. He felt a little bit of fur at the tips of his fingers and he remembered to take a deep breath. He knelt down and stroked Otis.

"Me and you against the world, huh bud?" Will whispered. He held tightly onto Otis' leash and entered the flat. He immediately saw two heads sat on the couch and he felt his heart rate pick up massively. Suddenly, the toilet flush and James came out drying his hands.

"Hey mate, took ya long enough!" He beamed teasingly. All the other guys turned to see Will but all very quickly got distracted by the golden retriever nudging it's nose against Will's hand.

"Will, not to be that person or anything," George had an awkward smile on his face, "but when the fuck did you get a dog?"

Will felt his throat go dry.

"Are you okay, mate?" Alex asked as he stood up and made his way to Will. "You look a little pale?"

Will's vision started to go fuzzy and he wobbled a bit. Alex reached out to support him but Will flinched. Alex quickly drew his hands away, trying not to provoke his friend any further.

"Will? Can we move you to the couch?" Alex asked instead. Will couldn't hear him properly and he edged back to Wall and slid down it. He felt soft fur run along his hands and under his chin.

All of Will's friends went to help to get the dog off but James quickly stopped them. "Oit!" He had said. "Can't you see it's helpin' him?"

His friends stood back and watched as Otis settled into Will's lap. Will started scratching aggressively at his arm as tears streamed down his face. Otis' paw reaches up and rests on where Will was scratching himself, almost forcing him to stop. The dog starts lightly licking at where Will was scratching himself. Will tugs lightly at the dog's fur, not enough to hurt him, to ground himself.

Will's vision was foggy. He felt the overwhelming panic of letting his friends down and being an over dramatic person. He felt stupid. He was being like he was in secondary school during his GCSEs. Like he had his future on the line and- he felt the soft fur of Otis underneath his fingers. Otis reminded him of summer, of softness, of relaxation. Otis reminded him that he has to calm down. Will slowly felt his breathing even out.

His friends watch in wonder as Will finally settles down and James lightly calls his name hoping to bring him back to reality.

Once Will comes a bit more too, he is praising the dog and stroking him. He doesn't want to look at his friends. The fear of judgment or rejection tugs at his chest.

"Do you want a glass of water or something?" George questioned first. "Maybe a bandage for those scratches? You are bleeding a bit."

Will looked down at the scratches he's made and winces. Gee won't be happy he's reopened some of his previous scars. He nods and George heads off to the kitchen.

"Do you want to sit at the couch it'd probably be a bit more comfortable?" Alex suggested and reached his hand foreward to help Will up. Will accepted Alex's gesture and moved to the couches. George returned with a glass of water and a basic first aid kit.

Will had a drink before cleaning his scratches with a wipe. James started to wrap Will's arm in a bandage whilst Will could feel his friends' eyes on him. Otis rests his head on Will's knee and, as much as Will wants to have Otis on the couch, he's not sure George or Alex would be okay with it.

"So what's going on exac'ly?" George asked and everyone shot him a look. "Sorry, I was just wondering."

Will froze he didn't know how to start. Otis started pawing at Will's leg, desperate to help ease some of his owner's anxieties. Will nodded and Otis jumped onto his laps and rested his head onto Will's shoulder.

"This is Otis." Will breathed out. "He's my ESA." James and Alex nodded whilst George looked confused by this new term.

"Um, what's an ESA?" George asked, rubbing his neck slightly as if embarrassed.

"An 'Emotional Support Animal'." James said.

"Yeah," Will nodded. "So he basically helps me with my anxiety and stress and shit. Like, right now, he's being supportive." Will stuttered over his words.

"If you want an ESA, don't you need to have a therapist for like three months?" Alex asked. Will looked down to avoid eye contact. He felt Otis give his cheek a few licks to try and cheer him up. He stroked the fur lightly.

"It's been a tough five months." Will almost whispered.

"Five months?" Alex exclaimed and George shot him a glare. Will flinched. "Sorry mate but you could've told us."

"No." James shook his head. "He doesn't have to tell us anything. He has anxiety for fuck sake, that drills all your fears and other small, miniscule things to one hundred!"

Will made a mental note to thank James later on.

"So how long have you had him for then?" George asked, swiftly changing the subject.

"One week." Will answered his voice quiet. "He's really helpful though. I had a really bad night on his first time with us. Me and Gee made a rule for him to sleep in the kitchen but he came and slept with me after a panic attack."

"He's a good boy,that's for sure." George smiled. Will nodded and let out a deep breath. He felt a lot more relaxed and smiled lightly. Otis reached foreward and licked Will's face almost asking if he was okay.

"I'm okay, you did a good job bud!" Will praised and ruffled the dogs fur. He took a deep breath and looked at his friends. "Sorry about that-" He waved his hand in the air. "-it was pretty embarrassing."

"No." James stood up and moved next to Will. "You have nothing to be sorry or embarrassed about, you can't help having anxiety and sadness and numbness!"

"Yeah!" George smiled and set next to Will on the other side.

"You're still our Will." Alex said softly and moved closer to Will. "We'll still tell stupid stories about you in videos and shit. Nothing will change."

They all pulled him in when George called, "C'mon Alex, get in here!"

Alex huffed but stood up and joined in on the hug (aka tapping Will's back). "You're still my favourite youtuber you know?"

The other two boys let out a noise of disagreement and all pulled away.

"So, are you gonna tell your fans?" Alex asked. Will shook his head.

"I'd much rather this stayed private." Will stroked Otis. "They can know I have him but not what I have."

"Do you not think it could benefit them knowing that it's okay to get help?" Alex's eyebrows furrowed at Will.

"We won't make it a big thing." Jamss promised and put his hand on Will's knee.

"Yeah, we'll talk about something and you can say, 'So I have this' and that'd be that. You don't need to sit down and make an entire video on it." George explained.

Will thought about it for a second. "I'll do it in a few weeks so I can get used to more people knowing." He commented, trying to convey his feelings.

"Okay." Alex nodded. "We won't pressure you into anything you don't want to do."

"Thank guys." Will smiled softly. "You've really been a help."

"Mate, it's no problem." James grinned.

"Yeah besides, what are friends for?" Alex chirped.

Will felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders and he was able to be himself more. Even though his anxiety wouldn't go away, Will found himself becoming alot more content with himself.

10. - Who drives? Cooks? Does the handiwork? Cleans? Pays the bills? Handles the public?

I don’t see either of them as drivers… firstly, Komaeda would be a disaster on the road, I’m sure. He technically could drive and money is no issue, so he could buy a car, but his luck would make driving a car dangerous, not to mention the possibility that he gets them into an accident. If he absolutely has to drive, then he will, but he puts himself as the last resort. And then there is Nanami, and she would be way too risky a driver… she would drive as if she were playing a video game, so it would be extremely fast and risky. If she somehow managed to pass the driver’s test, she would surely have it revoked within a week when someone else is a reckless driver and she takes it as a challenge to compete with them… either that or she falls asleep on the wheel and Komaeda decides driving is too much for her to handle ^^; If they leave the house, it’s through walking, buses, and subways, or sometimes a taxi, or a friend (usually Hinata) will pick them up from their apartment whenever they are going to hang out with friends.

Komaeda could technically hire a car and a driver, but they both decided not to flaunt the wealth like that and live comfortably. This goes for everything else in their life as well. Komaeda has an actual house, something of a rarity perhaps, but it is firstly too far from their friends, and secondly, they had lived there a year or so and both felt it was just way too bug and empty, and Komaeda had too many memories that haunted him, though he would never let himself show it.

Nanami is the one who brings it up. She starts with concerns for him, since he is the one cleaning the entire house, and he goes blank sometimes with flashbacks, but when that fails to work, she brings up how she misses hanging out with friends. They make plans, but it is hard for them to meet up since neither drive and they’d need to either commute for two hours each way or hire a car in advance. (Hinata is at least a frequent visitor since he’s best friends with them, but even he gets busy and it’s hard to make spontaneous plans when he is free). Komaeda agrees. The house is rented out to people looking for a getaway from the city without being too far from it, and occasionally used as a place to throw parties with their friends.

The advantage of being in an apartment is that it felt a lot closer, to friends and to each other. There was a warmness to the smaller area. There was less for Komaeda to clean, there were more varieties of restaurants and markets nearby, as neither of them really cook. Komaeda is a disaster, so he is only allowed to boil water for tea. Nanami can cook a little, but since most of her experience is with Cooking Mama, she sometimes rushes it. There is quite a mess afterwards… and sometimes she has to cook it for longer. It usually doesn’t come oit to bad. She’s gets better over the years, getting good at making bentos and snacks. Hanamura being so close now actually ends up teaching her (with Komaeda watching his every move) and also usually drops off food at least once a week in exchange for some favor or another (nothing bad, even if he says it like it will be. Usually he just wants her to review it, sometimes he asks her or Komaeda to look after his Mama whenever she comes to visit).

For handiwork, neither of them are too good at that stuff. Sometimes if Hinata is over (which is pretty often), he’ll try and fix it (mixed results…). Mostly, though, Nanami asks Souda for help. He’s more than happy to help Nanami, as long as the two are okay with him tweaking whatever it is he’s fixing (it can get a bit crazy at times). Sometimes he also fixes up Nanami’s consoles/computers, but that’s usually a job for Fujisaki, who works with Nanami sometimes to make games.

Both Nanami and Komaeda contribute money, though Nanami is the one with an actual job. Komaeda volunteers sometimes at a dog shelter, never for too long so he doesn’t get too attached. Nanami is a beta tester for games, often testing games in production and pointing out all the bugs, sometimes helping them with commercials by playing games and suggesting things that would really hype audiences. She does competitive gaming as well, of course, as well as run a channel that uploads biweekly. She doesn’t make a lot of money through her channel, but she doesn’t need to. She’ll stream every month for charity though, and with Komaeda, they double whatever earned and give it to the charity of the month.

Nanami is often the more public one, of course, though if she ever says strange things, Komaeda is quick to cover for her. The same goes the opposite way, of course, with Nanami often smoothing any stones Komaeda may turn with or without meaning to. However, they usually are not even needed to be public, as their best friend, Hinata, is with them so often and takes the lead. But whenever he isn’t around, Nanami takes the lead and Komaeda eagerly follows to help her.

so i’m not 100% on what the general agreement is on mark, but my unpopular opinion is i understand where he was coming from. he was trying to make money for the household that took him in when his life fell apart, and bryon’s minimum wage job wasn’t cutting it, and he knew desperate times call for desperate measures. i don’t agree with it, but i get it, and for the 213537356623465752676th time, bryon could have talked to mark. they were close, and he might’ve been able to influence him, but he didn’t try.

Porting a 15 year old .NET 1.1 Virtual CPU Tiny Operating System school project to .NET Core 2.0

I've had a number of great guests on the podcast lately. One topic that has come up a number of times is the "toy project." I've usually kept mine private - never putting them on GitHub - Somewhat concerned that people would judge me and my code. However, hypocrite that am (aren't we all?) I have advocated that others put their "Garage Sale Code" online. So here's some crappy code. ;)

The Preamble

While I've been working as an engineer for 25 years this year, I didn't graduate from school with a 4 year degree until 2003 - I just needed to get it done, for myself. I was poking around recently and found my project from OIT's CST352 "Operating Systems" class. One of the projects was to create a "Virtual CPU and OS." This is kind of a thought exercise. It's not really a parser/lexer - although there is both - and it's not a real OS. But it needs to be able to take in a made-up quasi-Assembly Language instruction set and execute them on a virtual CPU while managing virtual memory of arbitrary size. Again, a thought exercise made real to confirm that the student understands the responsibilities of a CPU.

Here's an example "application." Confused yet? Here's the original spec I was given in 2002 that includes the 36 instructions the "CPU" should understand. It has 10 general-purpose 32bit registers address as 1 through 10. Register 10 is the stack pointer. There are two bit flag registers - sign flag and zero flag.

Instructions are "opcode arg1 arg2" with constants prefixed with "$."

I write my homework assignment in 2002 in the idiomatic C# of the time on .NET 1.1. That means no Generics<T> - I had to make my own strongly typed collections. That means C# has dozens of (if not a hundred) language and syntax improvements. I didn't use a Unit Testing Framework as TDD was just starting around 1999 during the XP (eXtreme Programming) days and NUnit was just getting start. It also uses "unsafe" to pin down memory in a few places. I'm sure there are WAY WAY WAY better and more sophisticated ways to do this today in idiomatic C# of 2017. Those are excuses, the real reasons are my own ignorance, ability, combined with some night-school laziness.

One of the more fun parts of this exercise was moving from physical memory (a byte array as I recall) to a full-on Memory Manager where each Process thought it could address a whole bunch of Virtual Memory while actual Physical Memory was arbitrarily sized. Then - as a joke - I would swap out memory pages as XML! ;) Yes, to be clear, it was a joke and I still love it.

You can run an "app" by passing in the total physical memory along with the text file containing the program, but you can also run an arbitrary number of programs by passing in an arbitrary number of text files! The "TinyOS" will handle each process thinking it has its own memory and will time

Updating a .NET 1.1 app to cross-platform .NET Core 2.0

Step 1 was to download the original code from my own blog. ;) This is also Reason #4134 why you should have a blog.

I decided to use Visual Studio 2017 to upgrade it, and even worse I decided to use .NET Core 2.0 which is currently in Preview. I wanted to use .NET Core 2.0 not just because it's cross-platform but also because it promises to have a pretty large API surface area and I want this to "just work." The part about getting my old application running on Linux is going to be awesome, though.

Visual Studio then pops a scary dialog about upgrading files. NOTE that another totally valid way to do this (that I will end up doing later in this blog post) is to just make a new project and move the source files into it. Natch.

Visual Studio says it's targeting .NET 2.0 Full Framework, but I ratchet it up to 4.6 to see what happens. It builds but with a bunch of errors about Obsolete methods, the most interesting one being this one:

That's telling me that my .NET 1/2 API will work but has been replaced in .NET 4.x, but I'm more interested in .NET Core 2.0. I could make my EXE a LIB and target .NET Standard 2.0 or I could make a .NET Core 2.0 app and perhaps get a few more APIs. I didn't do a formal analysis with the .NET Portability Analyzer but I will add that to the list of Things To Do. I may be able to make a library that works on an iPhone - a product that didn't exist when I started this assignment. That would be Just Cool(tm).

I decided to just make a new empty .NET Core 2.0 app and copy the source .cs files into it. A few interesting things.

My app also used "unsafe" code (it pins memory down and accesses it directly).

It has extensive inline documentation in comments that I used to use NDoc to make a CHM Help file. I'd like that doc to turn into HTML at some point.

It also has an appsettings.json file that needs to get copied to the output folder when it compiles.

While I could publish it to a self-contained .NET Core exe, for now I'm running it like this in my test batch files - example:

Configuration is even more different on .NET Core 2.0. This little TinyOS has a bunch of config options that come in from a .exe.config file in XML like this (truncated):

I have a few choices. I could make a Configuration Provider and reach .NET Core to read this format (there's an XML adapter, in fact) or make the code porting easier by moving these "name/value" pairs to a JSON file like this:

This was just a few minutes of search and replace to change the XML to JSON. I could have also written a little app or shell script. By changing the config (rather than writing an adapter) I could then keep the code 99% the same.

My code was doing things like this (all over...there was no DI container yet):

And I'd like to avoid major refactoring - yet. I added this bit of .NET Core configuration at the top of the EntryPoint and saved away an IConfigurationHost:

I've got a Dictionary in the format of the IConfiguration host called "Configuration." So now I just do this in a dozen places and the app compiles again:

This brings up that feeling we all have when we look at old code - especially our own old code. I should have abstracted that away! Why didn't I use an interface? Why so many statics? What was I thinking?

We can beat ourselves up or we can feel good about ourselves and remember this. The app worked. It still works. There is value in it. I learned a lot. I'm a better programmer now. I don't know how far I'll take this old code but I had a lovely afternoon porting it to .NET Core 2.0 and I may refactor the heck out if it or I may not.

For now I did update the smoke tests to run on both Windows and Linux and I'm happy with the experiment.
