“I can’t think around you.”
Rafael x fem reader
"Mr. Barba has declined your request," Carmen said, her voice apologetic.
"Did he say why?" you asked, almost desperately. You wanted so badly to sit second chair to the prosecutor, wanted to learn the court under his tutelage. You considered him a mentor, and a friend. So, why was he declining to teach you in the courtroom?
"He didn't," she replied, "but you know how he is; he likes to work alone."
You nodded, crestfallen. There was no way you were letting this go, though. You'd talk to him that night, after Carmen went home.
**********
Just as you predicted, Rafael was sitting at his desk, his office light low as he worked. He scribbled along on his legal pad, cross referencing laws with a massive book laid open on his desk. You knocked on his open door, and he let out a soft, "come in," without looking up.
You came to his desk, then sat across from him, waiting. He continued writing down whatever his thought was, then finally looked up. Surprised flashed in his eyes before he masked it with cool professionalism.
"How can I help you--"
"You know why I'm here, Rafael."
"...you want to know why I refused your request to sit second chair." He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He looked tired, the years and years of hard work evident on his face.
"I'm not mad, Rafa. I just want to know. You've been such a help for me, taking me under your wing here in your office. What's changed?"
He looked up at you. "The courtroom is different than work here. Here, I can be myself with you. I can laugh and...and I don't have to focus as hard."
"I...I don't understand. You're always so focused and professional in the courtroom--"
"But with you there, I can't be. I--I can't think when I'm around you! The case, the defendant, the judge and jury--it all goes away the moment I see you."
You had never seen Rafael so...disheveled before. Even when in his office, chuckling about something, he exuded such professionalism. "What're you saying, Rafa?"
He sighed heavily. "I'm saying that you cannot sit second chair to me, not because of anything you did, but because it would be...unprofessional to work with you when I feel so strongly about you."
You blinked, stunned. Did he just tell you he liked you? "Rafa--"
"I'm not expecting you to say anything back, I just wanted you to know why. You'll need to ask another ADA to be your mentor. I can't, I'm sorry."
You nodded. "Yeah, okay.... I understand." You stood, heading for the door before turning back to him. "And Rafa? Why don't you and I do dinner one night?"

Tumblr media
There was one thing you just didn’t fuck around with; Sonny’s woman. Y/n Y/ln was Sonny’s the moment she transferred to the precinct, second she walked in Benson and Rollin’s could see him sit up straighter, stumbling over his words trying to talk to her.
You were a plus sized curvaceous woman, a red lochead with a skintone like a starless night, average height but still shorter than Sonny, two sweet dimples poking in each cheek, and a gap between your teeth that never stopped you from smiling big. It was a wonder he’d gotten to you before someone else— Lord knows how shy Sonny is. It took him a year to even work up the courage.
Now that you were Sonny’s, ain’t nothing was gonna change that. You were his. He was yours. End of discussion. But… You were alluring, the sexiest woman Sonny had ever laid eyes on, charming with a sharp tongue, it wasn’t shocking to Sonny that other people may have admired you— As long as they didn’t cross any lines. He was a jealous, protective individual but he could be rational until in the face of blatant disrespect; Namely, ADA Barba Rafael.
“Eh, Counselor. So, whaddya think? Grounds for a warrant”? Carisi crossed his arms, leaning against the wall, everyone gathered around in the precinct, a whiteboard with suspects and victims on the front. You stood next to him, your head leaned on his shoulder, hoping this was enough to get an arrest warrant.
“All 4 kids are strangers? No connections”?
“Yup. And they all identified David Martin as the assailant that molested them in the backroom of his bodega with the red dog and jesus statue”. You confirmed, crossing the room to the board, feeling Sonny’s eyes burn a hole through you; Proud. He was always insanely proud of you and loved to see you work.
Barba contemplated for a moment, and then he sighed— “How fast do you need it”? he asked, that familiar ‘yeah, i’m that bitch that can get you what you need’ smirk on his face. It thrilled you all each time.
“Now would be nice” Benson replies to which Barba smiles, nodding softly. Benson turns to Rollins and Fin, “Go pick him up”.
After they’d gone, that left you, Barba, and Sonny. Benson went back to her office to call Chief. You and Sonny were to prepare for the perps arrival since Olivia was clear on it being the two of you to lead the interrogation being the two most warm personalities on the team, “Whadda we have on David”? you asked, sitting on the table, scrolling through David’s file.
“24. Inherited his rents family bodega and works beside them in it, lives back home with said rents…Oh…” His eyes lit up at the arrest info, smirking at you and Raf.
“Sexual misconduct. He was a tutor outside of being a college student, 8 year old girl told her mutha he’d been playing other games with her outside of tutoring like—” He sucked in his teeth when he said it, “Mommy and daddy”.
You groaned; This never got easier. These scumbags never failed to disgust you, sending anger to the very pit of your stomach, “Grade A Douchebag, got it”. You rolled your eyes, facepalming. Rafa laughed, patting your shoulder.
“Well, we’ve got no reason to worry. I’ve got complete faith you’ll get this guy to confess like you always do, Mi Amor. It’s your talent”.
Sonny’s eyebrows rose, suddenly watching the two of you intently, clearing his throat. “C’mon, Doll. Cap wants us at the interrogation room”. He grabbed your arm, relieved when your attention finally went back to him, grabbing your tablet and following behind him energized and ready to dig into the scum. Rafa happily watched you walk away before following.
Of course Rafael loved Sonny, he loved everyone on the team even when they butted heads but you; You had a hold on Rafael, reminding him of an old love. Maybe it was only infatuation what he felt for you but he couldn’t hide his attraction. He only hoped he could back off for fear of losing two of his closest, oldest friends, scared out of his mind that either of you would catch on and shun him. His hand shook a little at the thought watching the two of you disappear into the interrogation room, chewing roughly on his lip; A habit he’d mostly gotten rid of before this whole debacle had started it back up.

“Barba likes ya”.
That was the first thing Sonny had said the entire time you were in the car on your way home. You could see his hand gripping the steering wheel, making his arm flex. It was a statement you’d like to refute, argue against but deep within your soul you knew Sonny was right and it would have to be nipped in the bud soon because truly; You were only in love with Dominick.
“Maybe it’s just a small crush he’ll get over” You mumbled, not believing your own words nor wanting to risk upsetting Sonny further; His shoulders relaxed, a sigh on his tongue. He was only worried, you knew. Sonny was packed full of insecurity although he was the best that ever happened to you.
“Ya right, Sweetheart. It’s just— Raf’s one of my close friends. Kinda like, uh, uh, a bee sting in da ass”
You snickered, sitting up in your seat and looking over at your boyfriend. “A bee sting in the ass? That’s a new one fa me”.— Leaning over, you kiss his cheek, smiling brightly when your driveway came into view. Home sweet home.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next time you and Sonny saw Rafa was outside of work after the David Martin trial. No surprise that you and Sonny got him to confess, it all unraveled from there. You and Sonny wanted to have a dinner with the team and as the ADA who got the guilty verdict, of course Rafael was invited. You both still had mad love for him and that wouldn’t ever change.
Benson volunteered her house since you and Carisi were currently renovating.
“Uh, man do you ever dress in something other than a sweater vest”? Fin questioned, helping him, Kat, and Amanda grab the drinks. You chuckled, Sonny did love his sweater vests but they looked amazing on him so you definitely weren’t complaining. Not one bit. The rolled up sleeves were the cherry on top.
“I was always taught to dress like a gentleman” Risi winked, earning a snort from you and Amanda.
“That, and the fact Y/n can’t stop drooling when you wear em” Rollins teased, making you blush like a maniac which Sonny took notice to and adored, his lips curling into an amused smile.
Rafael’s smiled seemed to drop a bit at the conversation, but again, he knew he could never move in on you, he was still a close friend to the two of you and he valued all of you. However, his heart still clenched knowing in your eyes— He was only a friend.
“I can’t help it. Do you see him, Manda? He looks like a delectable italian meal. All for me”. You met eyes with Sonny, emphasizing the last three words possessively, your eyes hiding a darker meaning behind them; Sonny licked his lips, his eyes meeting with Rafael’s, a simple nod would suffice.
“So, ladies and gents I think we should make a toast for our lead detective on this case. Miss Y/LN, wanna take a bow”? Olivia speaks up, everyone stood in front of their chairs, holding up glasses of wine; You were a blushing mess with the spotlight on you, a peculiar fact about you given the occupation you’d chosen especially when the spotlight was always on you, SVU, and the entire NYPD as a whole.
Although all eyes were on you, there were two pairs trained in on your every move specifically; Enthralled by you just simply existing. “Well, I can’t take all the credit. Not when Son was here every step of the way being the amazing partner he is”. You leaned into Sonny, rolling your eyes when everyone started cooing— Well, everyone but Barba that is.
“And also…ADA Barba. You did your damn thing as always”. You winked at Rafa, friendly yet it made his heart leap for joy; As if he’d just made it atop Mount Everest. He still wasn’t sure if this was love but he knew he’d do anything to continue seeing you turn that beautiful smile in his direction. Carisi’s jaw clenched just a bit, not because of you talking about Barba but because of the familiar twinkle in Rafael’s eyes when you looked his way— A look Carisi knew well because it’s the same one he’d had when he’d first fallen head over heels for you.
~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~ + ~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~
“Sonny’s out sick so I’m partnered with Y/N. We’re chasing our suspect and I completely fall on my ass, meanwhile Y/LN over here is running like fucking sonic the hedgehog. Didn’t slip not once, did this dramatic ass flip right onto the douchebag while I’m still trying to stop the burning in my ass” Rollin’s tells a story from your very first days at SVU, before you and Sonny were anything more than bestfriends; Laughter erupts throughout the table while you groaned.
“I was the rookie, had to show my skills off. Best believe I felt that flip in my back the next day”. Rolling your eyes, Rollins loved telling that story. You used to do some crazy ass shit back in the earlier days; Even now you were still pulling the craziest stunts that left Sonny’s heart racing with concern.
“And yet yuh still up ta no good even today”. Sonny glared at you, a playfulness behind it but you knew he was serious— You’d given that man every grey hair he’d earned on the job. You felt another glare on you, however; Your eyes met Rafael’s, he shifted in his seat uncomfortably before his eyes moved from you to Sonny. It was a tender thing, love was. In this situation there would be a difficult choice for all parties. You and Sonny could handle this in only so many ways, finally sit Rafa down and tell it like it is, ignore it altogether and watch him hurt himself trying, or…break off the friendship for the blatant disrespect.
—Rafa’s POV
Y/N looked gorgeous, before I knew it I was outwardly staring at her while she chatted with the table, admiring every freckle and dimple on her face along with the small gap shown each time she smiled or giggled— Sigh. I was really walking a thin line; Looking at Dominick, I saw a lifelong friend who’d been there for me through some of the darkest points in my life. Helping me through tough cases and being there when I fell with my back against a nearby wall, sobs wracking through my body; Yet here I am…in love with his girlfriend and no doubt future wife. Estoy tan jodido.
I was quiet the entire time, couldn’t find it in me to be chatty. I’d probably just blurt out my love for the woman in front of me if I did. After her eyes met mine for a fraction of a second at the table, she got up from the table and made her way to the balcony; I don’t know why, and I know I shouldn’t have but…I followed her.
Dios estoy tan jodido. I promised myself I wouldn’t do this.
~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~ + ~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~
—Sonny’s POV
I was no dummy, the moment I saw Rafael follow my woman out to that fucking balcony, I was seethin’. Mama raised a gentleman, and Rafa was a friend but if he was thinkin’ of doin what I thought he was; I was gonna blow my lid. So much for friendship.
“Ah, Sonny? You alright”? Kat spoke up, I guess I’d zoned out because the entire table was looking at me as if waiting for my next move. I wonder if they could see the bullshit that was happening— I felt betrayed, not only that, but I knew Y/N was uncomfortable with this situation, she’d told me many a night and it took everything within me not to go confront Rafael myself.
“I’m good, yeah”.
Rollins and Benson looked at each other before Benson sighed and nodded her head towards the balcony, “I’d go nip this in a bud if I were you”.
Licking my lips, I nodded. It was time to put a stop this. I’m sorry Rafael, I love ya like a brother but Non lo sopporterò.
~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~ + ~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~
“It’s pretty out here, isn’t it”? Barba snuck up behind you while you watched the stars; Poor thing, you even flinched a bit. You were hoping it would’ve been Sonny who joined you on that balcony— A hidden grimace when you’d realized it was Rafael of all people. The man you wanted most to avoid. How he could even think of doing this to Dominick was insane to you. That was his longtime friend, he’d known him even longer than he’d known you and yet here he was willing to risk everything; Even you. The woman he claimed to love.
“It is. I was just going back in, though. It’s a bit chilly”. You stood there awkwardly, watching Rafael’s body language. He was about to confess, you could tell and you weren’t ready for it— You needed Sonny, but knowing him? He was already on his way and about to blow up on Barba any second.
“No, wait a second, Querida. Please”. He reached out, catching your arm in his hand. You looked at it, contemplating your next move.
Well, you stopped, which was a mistake in and of itself. The first thing Sonny saw was you wiping your lips and storming past Barba to the front door with angry tears rolling down your cheeks and Rafa stood with a red handprint on his cheek, looking guilty and apologetic— Anger filled throughout Dominick but his main concern lied with you at the moment. He’d deal with Barba later.
~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~ + ~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~
“What’d he do, Sweetheart”? Dom’s voice was thick with gruff, his sleeves rolled up. He’d taken you home after informing Benson and the team, shooting a glare to Rafael as he told them that you “suddenly” didn’t feel so well. The room fell silent, and eyes moved to Barba before Benson and the rest came to see you two out; Odafin hugged you particularly tight that night, you were like his daughter, best believe he rained down hellfire on Barba after the two of you left.
“He kissed me”. You spoke weakly, afraid that Sonny would blame you, blow up at you; With a past filled with abusive relationships, it’s what you were used to. You nearly flinched when you saw how angry your words made Carisi— He was angry but not at you, never at you. He was angry that Barba would disrespect your boundaries and kiss you without your full consent, he was angry that his friend would kiss his future wife without any shame. The disrespect left Dominick speechless. His eyes, however, softened when he saw how afraid you looked, rushing to your side and pulling you into his embrace “I’ll fix this, Doll. I’m not mad at ya, I’m mad at Barba”. he was worried when you didn’t say anything, continuing to hold you to his chest nonetheless.
“Did y’know your accent gets thicker when you’re angry”? You mumbled, pulling away from his chest, a small smile on your face as you wiped your tears; Sonny chuckled, he knew his woman well. You were strong. He was still gonna light Barba’s ass on fire but you were strong. He’d tell anyone he ever met the same thing.
“You’ve told me once or twice. C’mere. Let’s get you into a bath, darlin’. Go get some sleepwear while I run the water, okay”? He pressed a kiss to your forehead and disappeared to the bathroom with his phone in hand, he hadn’t forgotten what Barba done; As Carisi said himself. Revenge was one of an Italian’s major food groups. While he waited for the bubble bath to fill up, he shot a text to Rafael.
“Ya fucked up, Barba. Meet me tomorrow at 7. Y/N doesn’t need to know.”
With that he turned his phone off, ready to focus on you and only you for the rest of the night. When he turned to see you, his smile could get no bigger. You were his calm in the middle of every storm, when he was tense, frustrated, angry, sad, etc— You were there to remind him he was human, one deserving of love and right now? You both needed each other, more than ever.
Sonny beckons you over with a finger, sighing when you’re finally in front of him, “Lift”. he instructed softly, removing your bra before helping you remove your underwear, when he was about to leave and let you relax, you grabbed his arm shaking your head.
“You don’t think I know you better than I know myself, Dom? You’ve had a rough night— No, a rough couple weeks dealing with your friends betrayal as well. Come bathe with me…We can make each other feel better”.
Man, he loved you more than anything in this world.
~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~ + ~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~
The next day Sonny awoke early, careful not to wake ya when he did, ready to confront Barba since the two of you were off today— Told to take the rest of the week off by Benson after the whole thing with Barba went down. Carisi was at first not sure that Rafael would even show up while he pulled on a simple white tee and some grey sweats; Maybe Barba really didn’t have any shame and gave zero fucks but this wouldn’t go for Sonny, not when he’d made his woman cry last night running out of Olivia’s house uncomfortable and enraged by someone she thought she could call a friend, a longtime one at that. He was just starting to debate leaving you at home when a text came through his phone, Barba, Rafael flashing across the screen. Usually Dominick loved getting a text from his friend, but now seeing his name left a sour taste in his mouth. He was hesitant when he picked up the phone, hoping Barba wasn’t argumentative— He was an ADA though, arguing was literally his job but protecting you? That was Sonny’s job. His purpose.
Barba, Rafael; Starbucks. 7. I’m already here.
Carisi stared at the message for a bit, taking a deep breath, he looked at you sleeping peacefully and put his phone in his pocket remembering just what he was doing this for. Who he was doing this for, and that gave the fairly non-confrontational man the push he needed to possibly go and break off an 8-year-long friendship. Walking back over to you, he leans down and kisses your forehead, “I’m gunna protect ya, Bambi. I swear ta ya”.
Walking into the Starbucks was nerve wracking, Sonny used to think of Rafael as a brother and to have him betray their brotherhood like this was insanely hurtful— Sonny is a sensitive, affectionate, and loving person. Hell, he’d shed a tear or two when Amaro came back after all these years. After this altercation with Rafa, he’d definitely come home to you and melt into your embrace, maybe finally let out the emotions he’d been holding in since this whole thing started. Looking around, his eyes meet Rafael’s and he smirked, he smirked at Sonny and that smirk seemed anything but friendly given the situation. Deep breaths, Sonny. This is your woman we’re defending here.
And so, he walked over to the booth and took a seat.
“What were you thinking, Barba”? That was the question that had plagued him since Barba kissed you that night without asking if you were okay with it; In their line of work, they couldn’t afford to do anything without consent. Seeing so many cases where consent wasn’t in the perps vocabulary, Barba should’ve known better.
“I was thinking, I love her, I need her” Barba responded coolly as if he didn’t care that Y/N had run from him crying after slapping the fuck out of him for even thinking she’d be okay with him kissing her. Dom scoffed, looking at the man as if he’d grown two heads.
“And Y/N, uh, she said she was fine with this”? Sonny raised an eyebrow, leaning across the table— Anger was painted on the Italian’s face, his voice low but threatening depending on Rafael’s next words. Barba’s face noticeably dropped at this which made Sonny snort a little.
“Tell me Raf, What’s her favorite food? Hm? Her favorite book? Movie? What’s her biggest insecurity? Go on, tell me”.
Rafael looked stumped, a deer caught in headlights, “I-I wasn’t thinking”. was all he could say, Carisi nearly laughed, a laugh that would sound bitter, humorless, ANGRY.
“Yeah, ya weren’t thinking, were ya? Yuh claim to love her and yet yuh’know nothing about my woman. Y-you kiss her without her explicit permission for yuh own selfish reasons when ya can’t even tell me the basics…Tell me, Raffy. What’s Y/N’s favorite color? Take a wilddddd fuckin’ guess”, Dominick was erratic at this point, his mouth dry and forehead creased, and yet Rafael still looked unashamed.
“It’s purple. And don’t you dare do that to me, Sonny. I would never hurt her, me entiendes? Huh”!?
That’s when it came out, that bubbling angry laughter Dominick had been holding in since they’d started talking; His sparkling blue eyes trained in on Rafael’s threatening and unwavering, “Her favorite color? It’s Brown. That was a fairly easy one too, Raf. Everyone who knows her knows it, she wears it more than any color. Our home is decorated with mostly brown, hell our fucking walls are brown, Barba. That tells me all I need ta know about yuh little crush”.
Rafael looked taken aback, but Sonny wasn’t done yet— Oh no, he was gonna let Rafael have it.
“We’ve been friends for what? 8 years? And you’ve known Y/N fa 4 years now, Raf. This is an extreme disrespect I won’t stand for any longer. To not only betray me as a friend and brother but ta cross boundaries with my woman yuh claim to love and make her so uncomfortable she runs out crying afta slapping you? That was fucking low, Rafael. So, here’s what’s gonna happen now”.
He stood up, gripping Rafael’s shoulder tightly and leaning down to whisper in his ear, his accent significantly thicker than when he first arrived, voice 3 octaves lower than before, “Until ya can learn basic respect and come to terms with the fact she’ll never love ya— Which I don’t even think ya love her in the first place… I don’t want you near us unless it’s fa work, when you can be a grown man and keep yuh hands to yourself? Respect Y/N and I’s boundaries? We can sit down and talk. Until then? Our relationship is strictly professional. Capisce”?
Before Rafael could even answer Dominick’s longer legs had taken him to the door in 3 short strides, he looked back at Rafael with one last “I’m not fucking playing” stare down before leaving to go home to his woman. His lady.
~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~ + ~•~~•~•~~•~•~~•~
When he got home, he was relieved to be there, ridding himself of his shirt before gladly joining your sleeping figure back in bed to rest some more and to hold you. He needed to hold you, to feel you safely there in his arms and no one else’s. His alone.
Before he could, you’d rolled over and put your head on his chest, mumbling sleepily. “Where’ve you been, handsome”? your nails glided down his chest lightly, a tired smirk on your delicate features; Dominick’s chest filled with pride and happiness. There it was. That calm after a storm again. Now that you were there. He hummed, there was no use in lying, you could read him like an open book anyways so he might as well tell you.
“I went to have a chat with Barba”.
You sighed, looking up at him with concern written over your features, the hand previously on his chest moving to his cheek, “How did that go, Mon Monde”?
He scoffed, putting his hand over yours, his eyes rolling slightly remembering what went down. “He knew nothin’ about ya, Doll. You’ve been friends for 4 years, him and I for 8 and he knew nothin. about. ya. Pure infatuation and nothin’ else, didn’t even know yuh favorite color and he had the damned audacity to have zero shame for what he’d done to ya. His only excuse? He needed and loved you. As if that made not asking bettuh— Took all my fuckin’ strength not to fight him, Sweetheart. That was my friend but…No one fucks with my woman. So, I told him to stay away until he can learn to respect us, mainly you. Told him we’d only be working with him and nothin’ else until then— But God, it pissed me off how he didn’t care and it pissed me off even more remembering him kissing on ya. Without consent too? You’re so lucky I’m not in a jail cell right now, Bella. I’d go ta hell for ya if I had to. I would”. After his little rant, he brought your hand to his lips; A kiss placed to the knuckles of that hand. It all made you so flustered, your heart swelled 10x it’s size just seeing how passionate Dom was about you; It also helped that he looked damn hot when he was possessive and protective over you.
“Hey, Dom”? You spoke up, looking up into those beautiful blue eyes you’d fallen in love with 3 years prior— He looked back down into your big hazel ones, reminded and reassured that you were all his when he saw the love in them.
“Yes, Amore”? He whispered, his eyes getting lower scanning your features and retracing the little details over and over again— Only ended by you climbing on top and straddling him, a smirk on your face.
“You’re so damn sexy when you’re all possessive”, leaning down, you kiss from his chest to his collarbone then his jaw, making Sonny shudder before you finally made it to his lips, tugging on his bottom lip with your teeth before finally planting a deep, passionate kiss on the males lips.
Your next words had Dominick’s eyes darkening and he promptly flipped you over after hearing them, nibbling on your ear lobe before whispering his own response,“Remind me who I belong to, Dio”? was what you said, and Carisi was quick to respond.
“My pleasure, Dea”.

Morning Coffee

Rafael Barba x Fem. Reader

“I can’t get over how a few months ago I wanted to learn your name and now you’re having breakfast with me in my sweater.”

Waking up to the smell of hot coffee and homemade pancakes was Rafael’s preferred way to begin his Saturday. It didn’t happen as often (or really ever) as he would have liked. He was coming off one of the best nights of sleep that he had ever had, feeling more refreshed than he had in years.
He was confused for a moment when he woke up, not immediately recognizing the bedroom he was in. He lifted his head from the squishy pillow, only sighing in remembrance when he identified the white, clean sheets of your bed. He had spent the night in your company for the first time the night prior. He would be spending the next week or so off from work. No cases, no evidence to review, no statements to produce.
He hadn’t the slightest idea what to do with himself.
That’s how he ended up taking you out to a nice dinner and a lovely walk in the park afterwards. You invited him to stay with you for the weekend, figuring that getting away from his office and apartment would do him some good. After watching some cheesy movie and a night of love, Rafael was able to get the best sleep of his life. And now he had breakfast to welcome himself too when he decided to get up. He let out a content groan, and allowed his head to collapse back into the pillowcase for another few moments.
His eyes peered at the digital alarm clock on the bedside table closest to his side. It was 8:00 AM on the dot. He smirked and let out an incredulous laugh. He couldn’t remember the last time he had slept later than 6:00 AM. Eventually, the delicious smells coming from your kitchen had tempted him long enough. He sat up in bed to stretch his tense muscles and crack his unpopped knuckles, it was always his first step in getting out of bed every day.
He pushed back the white duvet, wincing at the feel of the cool air hitting his skin. He made his way out of your bedroom, following the aromas of what he knew to be maple syrup and dark roast coffee. His padding feet stopped short when he saw you turned at the stove, clad in his cream colored sweater that he had worn the night before. He felt a heat creep onto his cheeks. He loved this picture.
You sensed his presence, turning around and smiling at him.
“Good morning, counselor,” You said teasingly; “Did you sleep well?’
He returned a grin, continuing his entrance into the kitchen. He gawked at the sight of the buffet you had prepared. A stack of pancakes with syrup, a fresh pot of coffee, bacon, and sliced fruit. It looked almost too good to eat. His rumbling belly proved otherwise though.
“Very well. I have to say that your bed is a hell of a lot more comfortable than mine.” He admitted, resting his hands on the sides of your arms.
He let his fingertips feel against the familiar material of his sweater. It was one of his favorites to wear this time of year. He liked it a lot better on you though. You flipped the last pancake in the pan, Rafael’s mouth watering at the golden brown disk.
“I just thought that a breakfast that’s more than three cups of coffee might be good for us both. I’m sorry if I woke you, I-”
“No, no, mi amor. Don’t be sorry. I’m partial to waking up this way all the time.” He drawled, his voice still thick with sleep.
He pressed a kiss to the side of your head, just below your temple. He eyed the small, purplish marks on your neck. There were at least three or four of them, he felt a little rush of pride at the sight. Images of last night flashed in his head, almost getting him riled up again.
You placed the last pancake onto the plate, finishing off the tower of fluffy goodness. You decided not to even worry about the dishes for now. You had all day to get them done.
“Breakfast is served. These pancakes smell heavenly, if I do say so myself.” You humbly bragged, turning and handing him a plate.
His eyes fluttered in delight as his stomach rumbling audibly this time. He gladly took the plate from your hands, ready to dig in.
“You’re too good to me.” He purred.
You laughed sweetly as he loaded his plate greedily. Poor guy was starving despite the rich meal you had the night before. You were pretty sure he hadn’t been eating well for a while. He let work consume him more often than not. He spent more time in his office than he did at his own home. You hated seeing him run himself dry like this. You didn’t want him to forget how wonderful and exciting life could be.
The two of you sat at your dining room table that was just large enough for the both of you. Rafael generously lathered his pancakes with butter and poured a stream of the sticky syrup. You kept a giggle to yourself when you saw the way his eyes rolled back into his head at the taste. You were even more impressed at your pancake cooking abilities. It was a home run in your books.
Rafael slowed his ravenous eating after the first few bites. He decided he wanted to savor the taste instead of inhaling it all down like it was his last meal or like he was late to a meeting. He had involuntarily trained himself to consume his meals quickly. His brain and body were always on the go all the time. It was nice to take it slow for once.
Rafael watched you from over the rim of his coffee cup, sipping the rich beverage slowly. He relished the taste of his preferred morning pick-me-up. He watched your every move. The way you delicately picked up your glass of orange juice and how you carefully cut your pancakes into bite sized triangles. Your entire demeanor comforted him. In just half a year, he had found more of a home with you than he ever had with anyone else.
His heart did a little happy leap when you walked into the room. His green eyes glowed brighter when he looked at you. He had fallen undeniably in love with you.
You had just stabbed a fresh strawberry onto your fork when you caught Rafael’s stare. You paused, looking to him with curious eyes and laughing nervously.
“What?” You questioned.
He blinked to break his trance, setting down his coffee mug.
“I can’t get over how a few months ago I wanted to learn your name and now you’re having breakfast with me in my sweater.” He confessed, his foot nudging yours under the table.
You looked down at the sweater. You had truthfully just grabbed it off the floor when you got up that morning because he had looked so good in it. It was soft, cozy, and reminded you of him. You were still getting used to seeing him in such casual clothing. When you first met him, the thought of ADA Rafael Barba wearing sweatpants seemed foreign. You adored seeing him so comfortable with you.
You sheepishly grinned.
“Oh, I just put it on. It’s super soft,” You explained; “But you can have it back if you want.”
He shook his head, beginning to feel himself get full.
“Keep it on. You look good in it.” He complimented, smiling again.
Your face grew hot, shoveling fruit into your mouth to hide your shyness. He went back into his pancakes with a chuckle, but he would just barely finish them off. You slid down into your chair shortly after, signaling that you couldn’t finish another bite.
“That was so good,” He said, resting a hand on his midriff; “Thanks for making it.”
You stood from your chair, taking his cleaned plate. You leaned down and kissed his head as you passed by.
“Of course. A counselor’s got to eat well. There’s more to breakfast than coffee and contemplation, Rafael.” You address him truthfully.
He gave a sarcastic scoff as he stood and followed you back into the kitchen. He topped off his cup, sipping it again.
“Oh, I know. If I had the time or luxury to afford a meal like this every day then I’d take it. Trust me.” He noted.
You felt sympathetic at that. Everyone who worked as hard as he did deserved something as bare minimum as a decent meal. You had been at a point where things like that weren’t always guaranteed. You knew what he meant to an extent.
“Well, as long as you’ll have me, then I think you can expect that.” You replied.
He set his cup off to the side, standing next to you to assist you in washing the dishes. He hummed thoughtfully.
“I might just take you up on that promise.” He responded jokingly.
You leaned your head on his shoulder, scrubbing your plate gently.
“Good. You deserve it.”
He felt overwhelmed with care and love. No one he had ever dated before had taken so much time and spent so much energy on making sure he was taken care of. He could take care of himself surely, but it was nice to let someone else willingly do it every once in a blue moon. He’d never not return the favor, he respected you far too much for that.
With the dishes clean and appetites satisfied, you had a clean slate for the rest of the weekend. You collectively agreed to lay low and forget about the raging world outside. Rafael knew one thing for sure.
He was one lucky guy.

Rafael Barba x Reader. Warnings: implied fem masturbation, slightly dub-con at the end (kissing) but reader is very enthusiastic. WC: 3,339
Tumblr media
It was an ordinary morning on an ordinary day. It was early and the eighth floor was just beginning to fill up. You had already been in the office for well over two hours, working on a motion and you were already running against the clock. As people milled about, settling in, you grabbed your noise canceling headphones and slipped them on over your ears.
You frowned when you realized your coffee cup was empty. You were in need for more coffee but did not have the time for it. As you let out an irritated sigh, you noticed the head of the junior ADA department, Sonny Carisi, stride in. As he passed by your desk, a brown paper bag plopped onto the desk. You slipped off your headphones and swiveled around.
“And what is this, Dominick?” You teased, as you reached into the bag.
“Bear-claw. Coffee - light and sweet.” Sonny called out as he settled into his office.
“God bless ya’ Sonny. You answered my prayers.” You called out, before blowing on the cup. It was so hot, steam rose from the small opening and the heat pricked your fingers. “How did you know?”
“A little birdie named Marjorie.” He replied. He stuck his head out the door. “She told me you were coming in early and if I recall anything from our Fordham days, it’s that you always forget to take care of yourself when you’re under the wire.”
You gave him a pointed look, which then softened into a smile. “Thank you, Sonny. Much appreciated. And when you win that Mickey Davis case, I am going to take you out for a celebratory drink.”
“Don’t start, we don’t even know what will happen. He may plead out.” Sonny replied. “I gotta go - meeting with the boss actually on this. Get back to work.”
“Yes sir!” You mocked saluted, before swiveling back to your computer. Time was ticking after all.
**
The rest of the morning seemed to pass in a blur. Again, nothing extraordinary happened. And as you electronically filed your motion, you spun around in your seat, with your arms in the air, in silent victory.
As you faced your desk, you saw Sonny walking back down to his office with a very handsome, distinguished looking man behind him. It was clear the two of them were having some kind of heated discussion. And you couldn’t care less. Because the man he was with, was the most handsome man you had ever laid eyes on. He wore dark jeans and blue and pink checkered shirt with a dark grey peacoat. His hair was perfectly coiffed, nary a hair out of place. And he had a meticulously groomed beard. His hair and his beard were dark, with salt and pepper flicked through. You had a sudden urge to tug on his beard and you wondered what it would feel like against your skin, as you slid your tongue into his.
The man sauntered past your desk and you looked up, feeling a flutter shoot through you as your eyes met. You caught a whiff of the cologne he wore - faint whiffs of vetiver and bergamot - and you closed your eyes, enjoying the olfactory overload. You so badly wanted to turn around, but you could not. So you settled for leaning to the side in an attempt to eavesdrop.
“You know who that is, right?” You jumped in your seat slightly and looked up at Marjorie, your co-worker, and fellow ADA.
“No. But he is nice to the eyes.” You smirked.
“That’s Rafael Barba.” Marjorie hissed.
You sat up straight. “That’s him? The Rafael Barba?” You scanned the office and sure enough, people were whispering and talking to each other as they looked behind you.
You couldn’t hear everything, but you could glean whatever they were talking about was not regular old shop talk.
You heard something about a ‘nice view’ and ‘had to move the Xerox machine and four filing cabinets just to get the desk in,’ and you snorted.
“Yeah, the one who k-worded a baby,” Marjorie continued, as she sat on the corner of your desk. She ripped off a remnant of your long-forgotten bear claw and popped it in her mouth.
“He did not k-word a baby.” It was now your turn to hiss. “That baby was already dead. He… expedited its passing.”
“Well, regardless. No one has seen him since then. Last I heard he was working with The Innocence Project,” Marjorie replied, plucking another piece of the bear-claw.
The door swung open, Rafael turning to face Sonny. “I'm going for straight-up not guilty.” Rafael stormed past you, once more, a breeze blowing by as he did so - and with it, his cologne wafted once more and you felt the back of your neck prick. Arousal shot through you, starting between your thighs, but rising to make your breath hitch.
Marjorie hopped off your desk and dashed into Sonny’s office. You stood to do so, as Rafael as he stalked by. Your eyes met once more.
“Good morning,” Rafael acknowledged curtly. You felt your cheeks burn and you gave him a small smile, before following Marjorie.
**
Lunch had rolled around. You rapped on Sonny’s door. “Hey - want to grab lunch with Marj and I?”
“Nah, can’t. Barba’s taking the Mickey Davis case on and I need to prep,” Sonny replied. He sighed before dropping his head into his hands, groaning.
You shut the door quickly behind you and moved to lower the blinds in his office. “Hey - talk to me. Barba was your mentor, right?”
Sonny looked up at you and nodded. “Yeah, he was. He was the best ADA here - I mean, he took on cases others dodged. He taught me so much. And now… it’s like jedi master and padawan here.”
You grimaced. “Sonny, don’t sell yourself short. You are an excellent lawyer and you’ve got the chops. If anything, he should be the one who’s worried.”
Sonny guffawed in response. “Don’t quit ya’ day job, Y/N.”
You crossed your arms and cocked your brow. “Come on, pizza. On me. Let’s go.”
Sonny rolled his eyes and nodded. “Okay, okay. But not Marco’s. That place is not real Italian.”
“Whatever, pizza snob.” You laughed as you both walked out.
**
Time flew by. Sonny was at voire dire and you chewed on your thumbnail waiting for him to return. You decided to throw yourself into work in an attempt to keep your mind otherwise occupied.
When Sonny did eventually return, he looked defeated and worn. He shuffled back into his office, his shoulders hunched over. You waited a good minute before knocking on his office.
“How'd it go at voir dire?” You asked softly, as you knocked on his door. Sonny was chugging pepto-bismol and he grimaced as he turned to you. “It was the Rafael Barba show, charming and cherry-picking jurors for twelve straight hours.”
“Yeah, the office mill said he was a dog with a bone.” You shrugged, pulling a chair out and sitting.
Sonny laughed. “Yeah. Now get this - I'm looking at his witness list, and he tracked down AJ’s other foster kids, ACS employees, VA shrinks. How big of a staff does he have?”
You shrugged again. “I don’t know.”
Sonny gave you a look. “Dollars to donuts, I think it’s my old squad - Rollins, Liv, and Fin helping him out.”
“You don’t know that.” You interjected.
“It's fine. Barba was here before me. I know where their loyalties are,” Sonny replied.
“When's opening statements?”
“A day from tomorrow.” Sonny replied. “Which means I will be here all night prepping.”
“Do you want any help?” You asked.
“It’s fine - it’s late. You should go home. If there’s something, I’ll let you know.”
You nodded and bid him a good night, before heading home.
**
At home, you climbed into bed and tried to watch a repeat of your favorite procedural show but could not focus. You spent the entire commute home, replaying the events of earlier in the week when Rafael came by. He smelled so wonderful and when his eyes locked on yours, your heart skipped in a way that it hadn’t in a long time. Picturing his eyes… his beard… you became warm and a ripple of arousal coursed through you, causing the ache between your legs to intensify. You had a drawer full of toys that you knew you would help, but sometimes, your own fingers were best – you knew you better than any other toy could. You slipped your fingers down your sleep shorts and under the waistband of your underwear. It didn’t take much – as you suspected it would not – and when you came, it was Rafael’s name that escaped from your lips. The ache lessened – and, for now, it was enough.
**
Time flew and before you knew it, the case was winding up - or so you heard through the grapevine. That office leaked like a sieve. Your phone buzzed loudly one morning. You groaned and looked at the clock - you still had twenty minutes of sleep left. Yawning, you sat up and rubbed your eyes awake.
[Marjorie: Come meet us at court - closing arguments on the Davis case and we are all going down to root for Sonny]
You quickly wrote back: who’s we?
[Marjorie: A few of us from 8th. Come on!]
You bit your bottom lip and then hit two little letters: ok. You quickly showered, threw on your pants and an oversized sweater. You grabbed a pair of wedges and made your way uptown.
**
The case was intense and heated. Emotions were rising. You fidgeted in your seat as Sonny faced off with Rafael. In the end, the jury deliberated in six hours and found Mickey Davis guilty. He was charged with manslaughter two.
Sonny caught up with the group from the eighth floor in the gallery who all congratulated him on his big win. You half-listened and half kept an eye on Rafael, who was busy gathering his paperwork. He looked handsome in his black bespoke suit, now cleanly shaven.  You frowned - the beard suited him. But it didn’t temper his handsomeness; with or without, it was as if he made your eyes burn. It also appeared to have turned him into a real-life Benjamin Button, so to speak. He appeared much younger than he did when he did that day in One Hogan Place.
Rafael turned again, and his eyes scanned the group in the back before his eyes settled on yours once more. You ducked your head, feeling embarrassed at having been caught and when you looked up at him, a smile had graced his face.
He began to head your way, tucking his briefcase under his arm. Your heart began to race and your palms were sweaty. You wracked your brain for a reason to leave but couldn’t come up with anything. And then Rafael was in front of you.
“Hi - you’re Carisi’s colleague?” Rafael asked as you were now afforded a close-up view. His eyes were the most intense seafoam green and you knew if allowed, you would drown in them.
“Uh - yes. My name is Y/F/N Y/L/N. I am a junior ADA.” You tripped over your words, feeling your cheeks burn. What was it about this man that renders me into a bumbling fool? you thought.
“Rafael Barba.” Rafael extended his hand and you took it, shaking it.
“Pleasure.”
“No, that’s all mine.” His eyes crinkled and a small smile graced his face. You felt your cheeks burn once more.
Sonny turned away from the group and faced you and Rafael. “We’re going to Rudy’s for a beer. Want to come? The squad is going to come.”
Rafael opened his mouth and paused, looking over at you. Feeling put on the spot, you nodded, going along. “Sure - a beer would be great.” You then turned to look at Rafael. “Coming with?”
Rafael nodded - wanting nothing more than to spend time with you - this creature who had enchanted him. He had to admit, he had hoped to see you more - but in his head, that meant an impromptu visit to the DA’s office, where he wasn’t necessarily well received any longer. Or, it meant asking Carisi - and he didn’t want to be grilled by the former detective. You were young - younger than him of course, but he couldn’t imagine you were that much younger - and at the same time he did not want to seem like a cradle robbing perv. The group dispersed outside, braving the elements of New York City. It was biting cold - the coldest day of the year - and the wind whipped around something wicked. You rubbed your gloved hands together as you all headed to Rudy’s. You and Rafael hung back, following the group, but at the same time, both knowing the route, having made the trek many times prior.
“So how long have you been with the DA’s office?” Rafael asked. Small, misty clouds emitted from your breaths as you chit-chatted.
“Two years. I was originally in Brooklyn, but I requested a lateral move.” You replied.
“That’s where I started too.” Rafael replied. A taxicab approached and Rafael waved his hand up and across from you, signaling to the car to slow down so that you two could cross. You didn’t miss how his hand cradled your back gently as you both crossed the street to the bar. Yout stomach flip-flopped in response.
**
The bar was empty, save for the group. Large colorful bulbs hung throughout, keeping in theme with the upcoming holiday. At the hightops, each table was outfitted with a miniature wreath with a candle in the middle. After a while, the squad from SVU also joined and everyone toasted Sonny on his victory. The corners of your lips twitched as Rafael said “To irony,” at Sonny’s response that they were just back where they started.
Rafael was engrossed in a conversation with Sonny’s former squad, and you watched him intently. You played with your napkin and wondered more about him and who he was. Sure, you had heard about the Householder case and how the prosecutor was acquitted - and sure, you had read some of his court briefs. But you had never thought in a million years that you would be so close to him. Many other former ADAs came to visit, but Rafael Barba never did. He had essentially dodged the office for years. You didn’t hear much of him, only in passing from Sonny while you were both in Fordham.
Hours went by, many drinks had been had. One by one, the group had dispersed, until it was just you, Sonny, Amanda, and Rafael. You all decided to move to a booth. You were slightly unsteady, having had too many glasses of wine and very little to eat. You knew in the morning you would be paying the price.
“Water for Y/N and fries for the table.” Amanda announced as she slid the food to the middle of the table, and the water towards you.
You plucked a fry from the table and tried to focus on what Amanda was talking about. Sonny made a quip and everyone laughed. You used the opportunity to sneak another glance towards Rafael. His sleeves were rolled up, showing off his well defined forearms. A sole finger traced the rim of his lowball glass, which was half-full. Your eyes were drawn to the Rolex on his wrist and you noticed the time.
“Oh, it’s late - I should get going,” you remarked, as you pulled Rafael’s arm close to your face, looking at the time more closely. “Sorry,” you murmur, releasing his arm. You stand and wobble once more, and Rafael stands, catching you.
“Good idea; it is late,” Rafael replied. “Let me just close out the tab.” Amanda and Sonny protested as they reached for their wallets and Rafael waved them off.
“I can go home with you honey.” Amanda offered.
You shook your head. “I’m fine.”
“Y/N, you know better than that; someone should go with you.” Sonny replied. “Amanda and I can.”
“Sonny you’re all the way uptown - I am all the way downtown. It’ll be fine.” You argued as you put your coat on.
Rafael returned, placing his wallet on the table momentarily. “What’s fine?”
“Me. Going home solo,” you replied. “But Amanda and Sonny think--”
“That you had too much to drink.” Sonny cut you off. “It’s not safe.”
“Sonny.” You pinched the bridge of your nose and you found yourself growing more impatient. “I am a big girl - I will send you a text when I get home.”
“Where’s home?” Rafael asked curiously.
“Brooklyn.” Sonny and you replied at the same time.
“Sonny’s right - someone should take you home.” Rafael countered.
“What if Barba takes you home?” Amanda asked, as she slipped her hat on. “Barba lives downtown - you don’t mind, do you counselor?”
“Not at all.” Rafael replied. “If that’s okay with Y/N.”
You sucked your bottom lip in. “Okay; Barba wins.”
“Great. Barba takes Y/N home and I’ll head up with Amanda,” Sonny declared.
**
The cab hadn’t even been going for ten minutes when Rafael found you asleep, resting your head on his shoulder. He didn’t want to move you - lest you lean on the glass and knock your head if the cab hit a pothole. He watched as the city blurred past him, a mix of lights and colors. You let out a small moan and snuggled closer to Rafael. Rafael threw his head back, resting against the headrest and let out a sigh.
The trip to Brooklyn was uneventful as there was little traffic and soon the cab pulled up outside the brownstone that was home to you. He nudged you softly, stirring you awake.
“We’re at your place.” He murmured and you smiled sleepily at him.
“Walk me to my door?” You asked, stifling a small yawn. Rafael nodded and requested the cab to keep the meter running. You grabbed your keys to unlock the door and turned to face him. You thanked him for going out of his way to accompany you home and Rafael gave you a small nod, telling you it was no big deal - better to be safe. He licked his lips and you felt a rush of bravery course through you - you’d later realize that was the alcohol - and did what was, up until then, a figment of your imagination.
You curled your fingers into his hair, since he was sans beard, and pulled him in for a kiss. Rafael was initially taken aback, freezing in place, but then he deepened the kiss. You moaned into his mouth, which he took as an invitation to deepen the kiss and slide his tongue into your mouth.  His strong arms, closed around your back and pulled you tightly against him. You continued kissing for what seemed like eternity, but was only mere moments, when Rafael pulled away.
“I’m sorry.” He blurted. “You’re drunk. You can’t consent. I should not have done that.” He took a step back, regret was etched on his face.
Your face burned with embarrassment. “It’s fine. I … should go. Good night, Rafael.” You mumbled before unlocking the door and darting inside, not bothering to look back.
Rafael groaned, rubbing his hands with his face. It felt so wonderful to kiss you - but it was under all the wrong circumstances. He headed back to the cab and went home, replaying the kiss over and over in his mind, as if it were an endless loop.
He knew what he had to do.
Imagine your surprise when the following morning, when you headed into the office to put in some overtime, there was an email from one formerly disgraced ADA in your mailbox - asking you out for dinner.
You took a large drag of your coffee and then hit reply.
TBC.

“Dunder Mifflin, this is Erin" Your friend's voice rang out through the office, your mind now more than accustomed to the now regular sound. A sad smile crossed your face at her words, silently running through your monotonous lifestyle in your head.
Wake up, grab a coffee, drive to work. Morning greeting from Erin, friendly chatter with coworkers and get to work. Lunch, annoying comment from Michael, more work, pack up, head home, make dinner, sleep. Day after day, the same routine. Yee haw, am I right?
You had grown used to the routine long ago, nearing 5 years since being put in the witness protection program. Of course, it was horrible having to leave everything behind in Manhattan; A good life, with friends, family, an amazing job, but worst of all, having to leave Rafael. It was the best relationship of your lives, four years of love, friendship, and so much happiness, but all good things must come to an end eventually.
Your eyes glazed over slightly, work forgotten as you thought back to the day you had to leave. You had just hung up the phone with Rafael, a simple call to say you loved him and couldn't wait to see him tonight, nothing out of the ordinary when you heard a commotion from the television, getting up to find the rest of the squad crowded around the object.
A live report was playing through the small screen, quality less than ideal but good enough for them to see that a sadistic killer had escaped from prison, one who you had put away only months before and had sworn he'd hunt you down.
Everything was a blur from there. Liv was on the phone, Amanda was ushering a task force into the bullpen and Sonny was grabbing you, pushing you towards her desk and shouting something that didn't make it past the waves of shock.
Only when an armed FBI officer clutched your arm and tugged you forward did you snap back to reality, barely processing the shouts instructing you to gather your valuables and to follow an agent towards a back exit. Shaking off the confusion, it finally registered in your mind what was happening, and you grabbed a small photo album and your wallet before being ushered down the hall, only to run directly into Rafael.
Through tear-blurred eyes, he threw his arms around you and whispered that you had to run, get out, go with the FBI.
"What about you Raf, you won't be safe here, please come!" You cried out, fighting the pull of the officer, your own tears beginning to fall
"It's you he's after mi amor, not me. Now go, please, every moment here puts you at risk" Barba whispered in response, his voice thick with emotion as you were tugged forwards once again. You stumbled, ripping yourself away from the escort and throwing yourself into the ADA's arms, him wrapping you in a tight embrace
"I'll wait for you mi querida, I'll wait as long as it takes for you to be safe again. I love you so, so much"
Barba pressed a kiss against your temple before pulling away and nodding towards the officers surrounding you, tears now shamelessly streaming down his face. You heard a scream, not realizing until far later that it was your own as you were ushered down the hallway again.
It was a blur from there. It felt like days, the car ride from New York to Scranton, the questions asked, and the constant stream of information they were feeding you. You had worked for years as an SVU detective, seen horrific things, but you had to admit this was one of the toughest things you’ve had to do.
The time from there passed quickly though. You settled into your new life well despite the pain it caused. All you wanted was to see your friends again, to see Rafael again, but you knew it wasn't safe, so you got by on your own, the small photo album you kept the only remainder of your past life.
You shook your head to clear the memory from your mind at the sound of Holly exclaiming loudly, now noticing everyone had crowded around a tv screen on the other side of the office. Confused, you spun your chair around and peered in their direction, hoping to get a peek at the screen
"What's going on? Did they finally catch the strangler?" You craned your head further, catching Kelly’s eye.
"No, come see! It's a police report, out of New York!"
Your ears perked up at that, quickly slipping out of your chair and jogging the few steps across the office to stop beside the shorter woman. "Breaking news out of Manhattan today, one of New York's most elusive serial killers, who at the time will remain unnamed, has been shot dead during police pursuit after nearly five years on the lam! For more on the story, here's Lieutenant Benson of the Special Victims Unit"
You felt the blood drain from your head, stumbling backward and covering your mouth with your hand, eyes blown wide in shock. Holly, ever the lifesaver was quick to throw an arm around her friend's waist, guiding you gently into a chair just as your knees gave out beneath you. "Sophie? Sweetheart are you alright? Honey, what happened?"
Phyllis was talking, comforting you and telling Oscar to get some water from the kitchen, but it was all hazy, the realization setting in that it was all over, you were safe, Raf was safe. It was too much for you, eyes rolling back in your head and slumping backward, falling out of consciousness. You awoke hopefully no more than a few minutes later, surrounded by the concerned faces of your co-workers. A hand reached out, giving you a cup of water, which you accepted with a weak smile, hand shaking. "Sophie? What's wrong? Do you need to go to the hospital?
Erin was rambling, asking questions with terribly concealed fear, to which you replied with a sigh, leaning forward to tangle your fingers in your hair, vaguely noticing someone rub gentle circles against your back. "I just need a moment, to- just give me a second"
You choked out, voice catching in your throat as you tried to collect her thoughts. You just breathed for a few seconds, tears threatening to spill from your eyes before you lifted your head and cleared your throat, hoping your voice would hold steady.
"I- I'm not Sophie Russo. My name's Y/n Y/l/n, I'm- I was a Manhattan SVU detective and I've been in witness protection here since that man escaped from prison. I was his arresting officer, he was after me. Holy shit he’s gone, I never thought this would happen, I though I’d never be able to see Raf again”
You sniffled, sitting bolt upright as you realized that there was a chance of being with Rafael again.
Unsurprisingly, the office was silent, no one really knowing what to say. Phyllis was the first to move, bending over to wrap the younger woman in a hug that you desperately returned, your arms slinging around her neck as you tried to steady your breathing.
“That’s... So AWESOME! You were in the real witness protection program, you were a real cop, you have to tell us everything!” Dwight exclaimed, bouncing on his heels at your side in excitement and bringing an a weak smile to your face.
“I will Dwight, just not today. I have some things to clear up first, ok?” You managed to say, pushing yourself up from the chair on shaky legs and gesturing towards the clock on the wall. “Besides, it’s past five, no need to be here anymore”
Holly and Phyllis lingered by your side a few moments longer to confirm you really were ok, but the rest of the office seemed to agree with your statement and went about gathering their things, the room being empty aside from you in a matter of minutes, and you found yourself rushing towards your desk phone, hand hovering over the keypad before it registered in your brain what you were doing.
It hit you, suddenly, that there was no knowing that Barba had waited for you, that he even wanted to hear from you, and so you stayed frozen, the camera crew hovering a few feet away all but forgotten as crushing doubts filled your mind.
“No. Don’t do this to yourself Y/n. You want to talk to him, so buck up and talk to him.” You muttered to yourself, forcing yourself to punch in the numbers to the ADA’s office phone. Better not to risk his cell, he might have changed his number, you mused as the dial tone played against your ear, barely drowning out your heart hammering in your chest.
“Rafael Barba”
You could swear you felt your heart stop as he answered the phone. Rafael’s voice hadn’t changed at all over the years, and silent tears slid down your cheeks as you opened your mouth, hesitating again before speaking.
“H-hey Raf, um, It’s been a while” You couldn’t disguise the tremble in your voice, the way it shook when you said his name, but it didn’t matter as you heard him gasp, then a quiet shuffle as he presumably sat down at his desk.
“...Y/n is that really you?”
You let out a choked laugh, wiping your sleeve across your eyes to try and dry your tears before replying. “Yeah Rafi, it’s me. It’s, uh, it’s really good to hear your voice. I’ve missed you, a lot”
You chuckled at the sound of him cursing under his breath followed by a stretch of Spanish you had long since forgotten the translation to, but you could feel that it wasn’t anything you wouldn’t want to hear.
“Ay dios mio Y/n, I can’t believe I’m really talking to you. God, How have you been? Where are you?”
Rafael tried to contain himself, but you could hear the little lift in his tone that meant he was just beaming, and you couldn’t help but smile too.
“I’m in Scranton of all places, if you can believe it. It’s nice though. I’ve got a decent job, nice apartment, friends. Enough to keep me going, I guess,” you chuckled, feeling the weight sinking in your chest drop away suddenly. “I, uh, I’d almost forgotten how good it is to talk to you. It’s been weird, being alone for so long”
Barba laughed, but he couldn’t disguise the tone of sadness it had in the background.  “I’ve never heard anything more true than that, it’s been ages and I still haven’t gotten used to coming home alone. It’s good though, that you have a life there. I’d have a few choice words to say to whoever sent you there if they just dumped you without any proper arrangements”
You felt a pang of unhappiness in your heart again, partially at the thought of how that would have turned out for you, but mainly because of how much you had missed Rafael’s stupid dry humor.
The two of you talked for what felt like hours, until the sun had long past set, but when he reluctantly ended the call with an off-hand comment about having a case to work through, it went from feeling like hours to mere minutes, and you went home with an air of loneliness in your wake.
The next few days were busy, with a combination of your regular day-to-day work and the addition of email after email and phone call after phone call making arrangements and filling you in on how things would work out from then on.
Despite the borderline chaotic sense of it all, you and Rafael had managed to make the time for a phone or skype call each night, which was a release from the stress you were more than thankful for.
It had been nine days in a row of this when you slid into your desk chair that night to open up a video chat, and the instant Rafael’s face appeared on your screen, you could tell something was off.
“Raf? Is everything okay?” You asked with concern written all over your face. The look that Rafael gave you was nothing but guilt, and you felt your chest tighten in fear, dreading the worst as he opened his mouth.
“Sweetheart, I have bad news... I’ve been in contact with the precinct, the FBI, anyone you can think of who’s involved in this and... Shit, I can’t think of a good way to put this, so I’m just gonna say it. You can’t come back,” He said, voice dropping nearly to a whisper
“Wait... What...?” It was as if time had frozen, your mouth numbed with shock for several seconds before you worked up the ability to come up with a coherent sentence. “...does that mean I can’t- We can’t see each other again?”
You could hear Barba’s voice catch in his throat.  “They, um, they said if you came back to New York you’d still be in danger, something about how there’s a chance the guy had affiliates throughout the city and they won’t be able to track them down”
“You’re avoiding my question Rafi... Can you at least come here, if I can’t go to see you?” you questioned quietly, feeling your pulse pounding in your ears
Barba chuckled, a low, sad sound with a smile that didn’t meet his eyes. “I asked about that too... Anyone from your old life, our old life who has actual contact with you is put at risk. There can’t just be visits, it’s all or nothing, no-”
“So you’re saying that if we saw each other, you’d have to give up everything you had and stay,” You cut in, fidgeting anxiously with the hem of your shirt.
“Exactly... Look Y/n, I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, and well, I know it’s been a long time, but if you’ll still have me, I’d like to come. We can start a life together again, we can be happy,” The ADA replied with a hopeful smile, and you felt your heart sink even lower.
You wanted that. God, you couldn’t think of anything you wanted more than to have a life with Rafael again. But is he saying this for me, or is he really considering his own happiness too? You thought to yourself with a visible wince.
You were silent for a long time, the seconds ticking by and Barba’s anticipation growing until -
“...honestly Raf? I, um, I don’t think you should do it,” you mumbled, wincing at the way his eyes widened in disbelief but continuing before he could cut in.  “Don’t, I know what you’re thinking and I swear to you it’s not that. It’s just... A friend said something a while ago that stuck with me, about how it’s important to come home the right way. Rafael this would be the furthest thing possible from coming home the right way, you wouldn’t even be coming home, you’d be leaving everyone you know and everything you’ve built in New York behind just to come to a place you’ve barely even heard of and start everything over again. God, I just can’t do that to you Rafi, I can’t ask you to do something that big.”
You bit your lip to keep yourself from crying, but the look in Barba’s eyes told you that you had done the right thing, and after a long minute of silence he gave you a slow nod.
“We’ll, uh, we’ll figure something out, alright Y/n? We always do.” Raf gave you a weak smile that was entirely unconvincing, but you returned his smile anyways and nodded shakily.
By the time the yearly Christmas party rolled around, it had been nearly two weeks since you and Rafael had last talked. You kept yourself busy, the holidays’ increased workload providing a good distraction from your last call but as hard as you tried, it couldn’t banish every last thought from your mind, and you found yourself worrying more often than not that your boyfriend couldn’t handle long distance for such an extended period of time.
That particular night, however, only held happy memories of the two of you as you flipped through your photo album with Erin leaning over your desk to watch.
“This was from our first Halloween together, It took a hell of a lot of pestering but eventually I convinced Rafael to dress up, and oh I remember this day! My friend Amanda  snuck a picture of Raf and I passed out on the couch in his office, he was so annoyed that she had done it but I’m happy she did, I like the photo,” You smiled while pointing out picture after picture, Erin smiling all the while
“It looks like you two were really happy together,” The shorter woman
“...Rafi?" the word was barely a whisper as you shot up from your chair, stumbling far-from gracefully over your own boots before quickly righting yourself and taking a step towards the man.
You were sure you looked as awed as he did as your eyes met properly for the first time in five years.
“Look, I know what you’re gonna say, but I just couldn’t be away from you for another day mi amor. I know it’s cliché to say home isn’t a place but a person, but we both know it’s true. I’d rather live in your world than live without you in mine Y/n, you are my home, and no matter what you have to say about it, this is me coming home the right way”
You bit your lip to stifle a sob and nodded rapidly, sniggering behind the tears welling in your eyes. ”Did you just quote Midnight Train to Georgia?”
A smile broke across Rafael’s face at your joke, and with tears spilling down his cheeks the two of you flew at each other, and for the first time in half a decade you found yourself cradled in Rafael Barba’s arms again.
“I love you. God I love you so much Rafi, I can’t believe you’re really here, I fucking missed you,” You whispered with a smile. Your voice was muffled by his chest, but by the way Barba’s hands curled against the back of your sweater and he let out a choked sob, you knew he had understood.
“I love you too sweetheart... So, so much... I promise we’re gonna stick together this time, ‘kay? You’re my home, Y/n,
Your face split into a teary smile at his words, and for the first time in five years, you felt really, truly whole.

Prompt 20: bandaging/stitching up an injury
Pairing: Rafael Barba x Fem!Reader
Warnings: mentions of pregnancy and surrogacy.
AN: I saw a chance to include ADA Isaiah Holmes and I took it. Because I think he’s a fabulous character and I love Wentworth Miller.
Tumblr media
“I am so sorry.”
Rafael gives you a funny look as you try to avoid looking at his hand which is currently bleeding. Normally, the blood wouldn’t affect you, but pregnancy hormones had apparently made you a little squeamish. “It’s not your fault.”
You sigh, before turning to dig through the medicine cabinet to get what you need, “Yes it is. I’m the one who dropped the glass. I’m the one that’s so huge that I couldn’t pick up the glass.”
Rafael snorts, “You’re eight months pregnant, and your back is killing you all the time. You didn’t need to pick it up. Plus the only reason you dropped the glass is because I bumped into you.”
You turn to face him, tears brimming in the corners of your eyes, “But you got hurt.”
With his good hand, he takes your free hand and gives it a squeeze, “I’m okay. I promise.”
He’s the one who diseinfects the wound, so that you can bandage it. When it’s all done he holds it up for you to inspect, “See. I’m perfectly fine.”
You let out a little sigh of relief, knowing you panic wasn’t exactly reasonable. And because he always seems to know what you’re thinking, Rafael pulls you into his arms for a quick cuddle. You snuggle into his body. He isn’t wearing aftershave, something that’s become the norm since you realized how sensitive to smells the pregnancy had made you.
His hand rubs up and down your back, and places a kiss on your forehead. “I love you. You know that, right?”
“I know. I love you too.”
“And this thing you’re doing? I think it’s incredibly kind and loving of you.”
You smile, and try to bury it in Rafa’s shoulder, “It’s not a big deal.”
“It’s a very big deal, and I know for a fact that Isaiah and his husband are so grateful for it.”
You take a step back and rub a hand over your belly. ADA Isaiah Holmes was your best friend. At one point he’d been your mentor at the ADA’s office, and from there a friendship had bloomed. He’d gone through some of the toughest moments of your life with you, and you had stood by him no matter what. In some ways, he was more like a brother.
So when he and his husband James had been ready to start a family, they had approached you about being a surrogate. You had stared at them for several minutes, more than a little nervous. You and Rafael had been together for a year, and while the two of you lived together you had both decided you weren’t ready for kids or marriage yet.
The two of you had talked about it extensively, before you had both decided you were okay to move forward. Isaiah had been thrilled, and to your surprise the insemination had taken the first time. You’d been warned it might take a few rounds. And now, here you were, eight months later and an emotional mess. You were really happy that you’d be done soon.
A knock on the door breaks you out of your thoughts, and Rafa goes to answer the door. Isaiah and James are there. Not missing a thing, Isaiah takes in Rafael’s hand and then looks at you. His lips quirk into a smile, before walking over to you, a bag of your favorite bagels in hand, “Craving delivery.”
You perk up and quickly take the bag from him, and start heading towards the couch. You ease yourself down with a little bit of help, and Isaiah settles on your left side. And as has become habit, you reach over and take his hand before placing it on your belly, where one of the twins is kicking. Rafa smiles as he takes a seat in an armchair, allowing James to take the seat on your other side and also place his hand on your belly.
And while the two dads get to feel their babies kick you, chow down and smile at your wounded boyfriend. He shoots you a wink, and you can’t help but think you’re the luckiest girl in the world because you have the best boyfriend and the best friends a girl can ask for.

Some women balance bowls of popcorn on their pregnant bellies. You, however, balanced your laptop on it, furiously typing away. The glow of the blue light from the laptop filled the room, giving it an almost ethereal feel. The tap-tap-tap sounds from you typing stirred Rafael awake. Rubbing his eyes, he looked at the clock on his side of the bed.
“Cariño, it’s 3:30 in the morning. Why are you awake?” Rafael grumbled, still half-asleep.
“Because mi amor, your daughter wants to keep me up at night, by using my bladder as a bouncy house. Besides, you have been a juez for three years already and if you remember correctly, we agreed we would go back to that tiny resort in Cuba. Ya know, with the nude beach... except life happened and we never did,” you replied.
Rafael sat up in bed and gingerly lifted the laptop from your belly. “Right, life happened and I told you we would take a vacation.”
“¿Y cuando?” you asked, taking your laptop back, placing it on your nightstand. “After I have this baby? You know once she’s born, that’s not going to happen. We will be knee deep in diapers once more and we will have ni un momento de paz,” you replied exasperated. You rubbed your swollen belly. “We can make it a baby-moon.”
“A baby-moon?” Rafael replied, his brow cocked.
“Sí, a baby-moon. I already spoke with your mother - Jorgie has spring recess in two weeks. Lucia said she would take him for the week.”
“I can’t just take time off with little notice,” Rafael protested. “There are rules.”
“Rafael,” you began, rolling your “R” for emphasis, “Ya lo hice. I already worked it all out. I was going to tell you in the morning. Our passports are still valid and I booked the hotel already. I had just finished booking the flights when I was so rudely interrupted,” you replied with a wink. You reached over and turned on the bedside lamp before crawling over to Rafael and straddling him. His hands grazed the outside of your thighs, before slipping them under the oversized t-shirt you wore.
“Rude? Cariño...” Rafael replied, his tone also playful.
“Mmm-hmm,” you hummed. “Let me remind you about how fun it was the last time we were there.”
You bit your lip as one of Rafael’s hands skimmed the waistband of your underwear. He kept his other hand on your waist as the tips of his fingers ghosted your intimate parts. It was the barest of touches and already, your partner had you soaked. Rafael shifted your shirt, and you pulled it up so the hem rested on your burgeoning belly.
Reaching down, you pulled your panties to the side. Rafael propped his legs up you leaned against his legs. He could tell how wet you were. “Touch me,” you requested quietly, taking his hand and leading it to your folds. Rafael smirked and did as you requested. “Estas tan mojado,” Rafael noted, huskily.
You moaned as Rafael stroked your folds. He rubbed back and forth along your clit slowly until you were squirming beneath him before slowly sinking two fingers inside. His green eyes were focused on the faces you were making as he worked you.
He let your essence coat his fingers before he sucked his fingers off. You groaned as you watched his tongue dance around his fingers as he sucked them clean. Rafael sat up and pulled you in for a deep and passionate kiss. He pressed his tongue at the seam of your mouth, seeking entry and at your grant of access, delved into your mouth. You sighed into the kiss.
You moved your mouth from his and slipped your hands under the hem of your shirt to tug it off, pulling it over your head. Rafael’s warm, large hands were all over you, cupping your breasts. He kissed down your collarbone, before moving down to your breasts, latching onto a nipple. Over the course of your pregnancy, your breasts had become fuller, and more sensitive. You gasped as his teeth grazed one hardened pebble before moving to the other. You could feel his erection and you pushed your panties to the side once more, undulating against him. You slowly rocked your wet pussy against his length, soaking his clothed cock with your juices, leaving a dark spot on his boxers. Rafael groaned as he continued his oral ministrations on your breasts.
Rafael broke away, leaving up to kiss you once more. The kiss this time was deliberately soft. You smiled against his lips. Rafael pushed you gently off of him, and you reached for a pillow to placed it under the small of your back, for support. Your head was to the edge of bed, and Rafael walked around, removing his boxers in the process. Some cum wept out and he used that as lubrication as he pumped his cock. You loved watching Rafael masturbate; if anything, it fanned the flames of your arousal. You bit your lip once more to stifle a moan as you snaked your own hand down to rub your clitoris.
Rafael ended with his head near your head; his cock sticking up gloriously straight in the air. It gave him a beautiful if upside-down view of your face and breasts. You leaned your head over the edge and he leaned forward into your mouth. Rafael thrusted in and out your mouth, relishing in the feel of your tongue on his erection. Rafael cupped your breasts again as he continued thrusting in and out of your mouth. You sucked the pre-cum that dripped out from the slit in the head of his cock. The salty taste flooded your mouth. Rafael grunted softly, as your tongue, soft and warm, swiveled over his cock, before you hollowed your cheeks to suck him harder. You spread your legs wantonly and continued to pump your fingers, in and out and in again.
Rafael grunted as he leaned further to cover your hand, guiding you as you pleasured yourself. You slipped your fingers out and Rafael sucked them clean before slipping this thick fingers in, replacing yours. You moaned against his cock once and the vibrations caused Rafael to shudder.
Your hands wrapped against the backs of his thighs. You could feel him getting close - the sinewy muscles in his thighs were twitching and trembling. Rafael stumbled backwards, leaving your mouth and aching pussy empty. You whined in protest. “I’m too close,” he warned.
“Do it,” you encouraged. You squeezed your breasts together. “Come for me.” You opened your mouth once more. Rafael climbed onto the bed and pulled you by your legs so your head was no longer hanging off. You gave Rafael the slightest of nods. He kneeled on one leg, the other bent and leaned over you. Gripping his cock tightly, he pumped himself feverishly, the coil in his belly ready to snap. He cupped his balls with his other hand and tugged. Rafael’s hips jerked forward and he came hard, grunting your name as thick white ropes of his cum released onto your breasts, neck and mouth.
“Give it to me,” you moaned, your tongue darting out to lick some of the cum by your mouth. Rafael shuddered once more and his hips jerked again as release finished splattering all over you. He fell back on his haunches, trying to catch his breath. You sat up, propped on your elbows. You gave Rafael a shit-eating grin, before running a finger down your cum covered clavicle and then licking your finger clean.
Rafael rubbed his face, admiring his handiwork. To him, you were a raving beauty but now you were goddess of sex, pleasure and excess. Rafael took a mental picture of you before he got up and walked over to the master suite to get a warm washcloth. Rafael gently cleaned you up before tossing the washcloth onto the nightstand.
Rafael kissed you softly once more. You wrapped your hand around his neck, as you snuggled to him. His hands ran down the curves of your body - from the swell of your breasts, to your round pregnant belly, to the curve of your hip and back up. “Let’s take care of you,” he murmured, kissing your neck.
“It’s fine -,” you began to protest, and Rafael captured your lips with his, quieting you.
“Disparates,” Rafael replied, leaning back on his elbows. He gave your ass a squeeze before laying completely back. “C’mere,” he beckoned. You moved closer to him, and Rafael pulled you so that you were straddling his face.
“Oh!” You exclaimed, catching onto his hint. He gripped the outsides of your thighs as you sunk down onto his face.
Rafael’s breath on your most intimate part made you weak. You groaned as his tongue immediately licked a broad stripe between your folds. His tongue was acrobatic in its movements, alternating swirls, thrusts, flutters and flicks against your folds, concentrating on your swollen pink pearl.
A mix of obscene language and Rafael’s name emanated from your mouth as pleasure overtook you. Rafael was relentless, alternating his licks with sucks.
You rocked against Rafael’s face, meeting his tongue thrusts. “Don’t stop, please, don’t stop,” you moaned. He paused momentarily to catch his breath and turned his face side to side, alternating kisses and love bites on your thighs. Rafael took the opportunity to use his fingers to pump in and out of you. The sounds of saliva, your wetness, and moans filled the room. Rafael curled his fingers towards your belly button, stroking you in a come hither motion.
“Come for me, cariño,” Rafael commanded.
“I— I— Raf—“ you gasped, grasping the headboard tightly. Your lungs burned as your body obeyed, coming hard. All the nerves in your body were a-buzz as your pussy contracted, squirting all over his face. Rafael groaned as he lapped your juices. Your cries faded into a whimper.
The wet smacking sound of a kiss on your thigh returned you back to reality. Rafael helped you off him.
You laid against Rafael trying to catch your breath as he cleaned himself up.
“When do we leave for Cuba?” Rafael asked.
“I knew you’d come around. Two weeks,” you replied sleepily. Rafael held you close, and the two of you drifted off to sleep. That night he dreamed about the time you shared in Cuba.
 TBC.
