Pro tip for anyone who lives in a building with a toilet: if the plunger isn't working, and you're tempted to leave the clog until the morning, make sure the water isn't still flowing into the bowl.
And make sure it's not on the ground floor of a two-story house, with a communal plumbing pipe that is now clogged deep enough for any water upstairs to come out that toilet.
...
Related tips:
Carpet that has been soaked in poo water cannot be cleaned by human hands, even with one of those steamer machines.
Drywall that has been soaked in poo water will need to have a one-foot "flood cut" carved into it, to remove the damaged area.
You know that part in ET where the house is covered in tarps because Biohazard™? The water damage people will need to recreate that, with zipper doorways and industrial dehumidifier fans roaring day and night for 3-5 days.
Cats can and will climb inside any holes in the wall. Yes, even that one. Yes, they can climb upward too.
Homeowner's insurance is GREAT.
This little misadventure will cost upwards of $17,000 to fix (but we only have to pay $1000 of it). That's still an expensive clot of toilet paper.
In other news, our new carpet is going to be a different color, and that's exciting.

I keep seeing posts every year about AO3 Wrapped and how it’s a good thing it doesn’t exist because no one is prepared for the emotional chaos.
So, I have decided to use my coding skills (and Front End Engineering) for evil, and write a Tamper Monkey user script that will create AO3 Wrapped. (Basically just add the stats to the first page of the user History on AO3; since it’s a user script it will only be visible to people running it)
As such, I am currently taking nominations for categories in AO3 Wrapped. So far I’ve made Top 3 Warnings, Top 10 Relationships, Top 10 Characters, and Top 10 Freeform tags. Probably also going to include Top 5 Authors and Longest Fic, and Total Words Read
(I can’t do userbase comparisons like “you were in the top 10% of Doctor Who readers”; it has to be only on a personal user’s history)

why have I only ever seen the phrase “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” used in the context of people who have excessive work ethic to the point of disrespecting others for resting, when the phrase has so much potential as something you say with manic confidence right before bursting into tears when looking at your work schedule

You know that feeling when you move one piece of furniture and suddenly you can’t find anything in the entire house?!?!
I changed my kitchen table a week and a half ago. There was a wooden ruler sitting on top of the old table.
Can’t find the dang ruler and I’ve gone through all the places where things from that table went, including back on top of the table.

First trip in 2 years and I am excited/nervous. Never been to Colorado before, never been on a paid work trip before, and never travelled when I wasn't in full control of the itinerary before.
It's a lot.

YouTube is really so helpful sometimes. Right now I'm appreciating the folks who take time to make really easy, really practical, not-at-all-condescending basic home repair videos.
When I was cooking tonight, one corner of my spice-rack pulled away from my pantry door. This made the whole thing loose and definitely at risk of falling off unexpectedly, especially since it wobbled every time I opened/closed the door. That was a very messy disaster waiting to happen.
So I didn't want to leave it for too long, but I also needed to find a fix that would work given my limited supply of home-repair equipment and my limited experience with home-repair.
The issue was a stripped screw hole, which isn't a big deal on its own, but this was complicated by the fact that the door is a hollow-core door (very little material for the screw to grip onto), the location of the hole couldn't be changed (because the rack has to hang where it is), and the screw width couldn't be changed (because the screw first passes through a hole in the metal of the rack).
So I went looking for videos and found this one.
youtube
Easy to understand and it presented multiple approaches to solving my problem.
I looked for a longer screw (among my random assortment of saved hardware items) but didn't have a longer screw that wasn't also wider and so wouldn't fit through the metal hole.
I tried the toothpick trick, but that didn't work because I was already dealing with a hole that was pretty small and the toothpick bits just kept falling down into the hollow interior of the door.
So I dove back into my hardware hoard and found a plastic wall anchor that looked like it could fit into the existing door hole and a new screw that looked like it could fit into that anchor while also fitting through the metal hole in the rack.
I couldn't drill anything (that would require removing the spice-rack entirely). But there was just barely enough room to squeeze the anchor into alignment between the rack and the door. And then I was luckily able to use a screw to push hard enough and straight enough to lodge the anchor into the door. It wasn't flush, but I was still able to get a grip with the new screw and tighten things enough that it's more flush and definitely more secure.
So kudos to all the YouTube how-to and home-repair folks out there sharing their knowledge in easily accessible ways.
Also I have now become One of Those People. My hoard of "But Someday I Might Need That" proved useful one (1) time, so now it's existence is justified for eternity. Can never get rid of anything ever again.

adventure time lore is insane. it starts off just being a goofy kids show that has magic for no reason, but then you learn that all magic users are manic and/or depressed (what betty calls sadness and madness). because it turns out magic is actually a cosmic force beyond mortal comprehension, that itself was learned from cosmic entities that predated the existence of time itself inside a sea of monsters. and "magic" really is just understanding more about the nature of the universe than most people. that, in a way, reality isnt "real" and understanding that allows you to mold it. and thats magic. but that drives you to insanity and/or apathy. and there are beings who hold significant cosmic importance who are more prone to magic. and the reason magic became prevalent on earth is because of a nuclear war a thousand years ago, which released the entity that represents the destruction of all life onto the world. and after a nuclear apocalypse this gave way to a new earth, where magic could thrive. but a lot of the beings we see arent even magical, theyre just mutants from what happened 1000 years ago. and humanity as we know it has been all but wiped out. but everything stays the same because cycles of war and violence continue. and it doesnt matter if its nukes or magic. everything stays the same, but still changes.

So I’ve been on a Star Trek kick lately, and the episodic nature of Strange New Worlds framed around the personal logs, combined with LITERALLY living through major historical events this decade made me decide that my New Years Resolution for 2024 should be to keep a diary/logbook.
…however I ALSO have lots of experience as an amateur archivist, and so I wanted to figure out a fairly future proof way of keeping said diary. This IMMEDIATELY ruled out various journaling apps for me, since most of them are proprietary, with no way to ensure your data is preserved if the company closes or just decides to do more rent seeking.
So I started poking around with various open source journaling softwares. My girlfriend pointed me at Standard Notes, which she’s been using for a few years, so I decided to take a look at it. I poked around their website for a bit, and discovered that they had the ability to let me self-host a server for my notes, which was a MAJOR plus for me, from an archival point of view (since my data would be local to my device AND on a server, but a server I have physical access to)
I ended up with a few questions that the website could not answer for me, so I emailed their support team and they got back to me very promptly with answers to my questions. They also sent me the link to a demo version with all the paid feature unlocked, so I could test them out.
I ended up deciding that the features would work perfectly for me, both mobile and desktop abilities. In particular, I really liked the Daily log feature for my diary plans, but the demo also had really cool features that I could see my self using for other things, like spreadsheets, code editors, and checklists. I also really like the concept of the Web Clipper, as someone who often needs to make notes on websites, although I have not set it up yet.
After playing with the demo for a bit, I was pretty sure I liked the options Standard Note had, so I started working on getting the self hosted server set up for myself.
I had a couple false starts getting it set up, because (as someone moderately familiar with open source software) I first went to GitHub for setup instructions, and the complete setup info was not there, but was instead on the Standard Notes website. The basic setup instructions for getting the server running locally were super easy to follow, and I only had one minor issue with changing the ports (I flipped the order they needed to be in since I wasn’t super familiar with Docker)
… And then I got to the part about securing my server, which is where I started to run into issues. My girlfriend had previously set up my server with Navidrome (basically open source Spotify), so when I started to follow the Standard Notes instructions for securing https traffic and saw the instructions wanted me to install nginx directly on my server, I immediately had a few red flags, as I knew my girlfriend had set that up in Docker for Navidrome. After consulting with her, I pulled code she had written to dockerize nginx for Navidrome and modified it for Standard Notes.
And then when I ran it it IMMEDIATELY failed with duplicate port options. Turns out that the ports modifications I had done earlier were conflicting with the ones I wanted to expose with nginx (…because they were the same ones 🤦‍♂️) so I updated the standard notes docker container to not expose anything directly on my server, and made the nginx container the only one in charge of exposing ports on my server.
And with one more run, SUCCESS! I could access the self hosted server page from both my server and my phone (which I pulled off my home network to experiment)
And once the server was running, adding my self-hosted address to the phone app and web app maintained by Standard Notes was SUPER easy! Just updating a single address in the login!
I’m super excited to use this as my new journaling app for 2024, and maybe even replace my various note taking softwares (Apple notes, Google Drive, Notes Plus) with it!

So my aunt, for whom I have been very grateful in these trying times, has just thrown fit because of my color scheme. I haven't made a secret of it. I've had the swatches on the wall from the start. She just now connected what they are. I think it was when the yellow started to go up and she looked at it from an angle. I understand her concern. It is a very open floor plan. The safe move would have been to pick one color and just go all the way through with the same color. In fact, that is what had been done previously. Blue, blue, everywhere.
I am not everyone. I never have been. When I was in high school, for freshman year, I dressed for spirit week as a hippie and got the nickname Rainbowjay, and it stuck.
My aunt said, "It looks like you pulled a crayon out of the box and did a different color for each room," and "it looks like Easter eggs."
A) What is wrong with either of those things? So? It is bright and vibrant and colorful? Hard to be unhappy or depressed or at least harder in a house that is brightly painted. Color therapy. Paint those woes away! And who doesn't like Easter? If I could still eat them, I would eat deviled eggs all the time! (As it is, I make deviled Chicken Salad. Not quite the same, but pretty good, if I say so my self.)
And 2) WHAT THE EVER LOVING FUCK DOES IT MATTER?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
It is my house. I may be having trouble coming to emotional grips with it, but legally, it mine.(Well, 20% goes to my brother if it's sold) I only need to please myself.
What really pisses me off is that my aunt has been telling this constantly. Oh, you really need to make this "your house". But when I do so, i.e. pick paint colors, I get told, "J*s*s fucking Ch*ist Jay, stop acting like a 5 year old and living in the past."
1)I got the nickname Rainbow in high school. and B) Nostalgia can be cool if done right.
Then, to top it off, my bookshelf collapsed. My aunt has been very vocal against my books from the beginning. She offered to help me clean up the bookshelf. With a trashbag. Now, I wouldn't suggest cleaning up her sewing(she quilts) things the same way. Why can't I simply like books, reading and knowledge?
AGAIN, I AM A GROWN ASS ADULT AND IT IS NONE OF HER DAMN BUSINESS!
I understand this is coming from a place of love on her part, I really do.
However, that said...
I don't think, act or behave the way she does. That isn't a bad thing. People shouldn't be mindless clones.
I believe in being different. Even if that is just a small act of defiance once in a while, like wearing blue shoes when everyone else is wearing black and white. (Catholic school thing, don't ask) I also believe in moderation in all things, including moderation. That means once in a while doing something crazy like painting your house a rainbow and making up for it by being extremely conservative on something else.
Balance. I have struggled with it at times, but it is what I strive for. I think we all should.
BTW, the base of greys runs through the house. Here are the palatte colors I used.
