Fascinated by this Dan / Wobé Initiation Gebande Beggar Mask that is a part of our latest African art and artifacts collection. Brian has been lovingly adding details to each of these items, and learning about them is certainly fascinating. Pieter Jan Vandenhoute, author of “Classification stylistique du masque Dan et Guéré de la Cote d'Ivoire occidentale” (1948), distinguished two large groups of Dan Masks: the Gebande and the Genome. Gebande is the most sacred examples of Dan Masks while Genome is a lower rank of Masks. The classifications relate to the content which the Dan attribute to the Mask, rather than the appearance of the Mask. Gebande Masks can be divided into a series of subgroups and categories, and this particular example is a Beggars’ Mask, whose primary purpose would be to be used in the collection of offerings for ancestors. Hand crafted in forest wood with a decoration of cotton fabric, inlaid with cowry shells and bells in bronze, this example is a true beauty. Arlindo Maunde was born in Inhambane Province, Mozambique where he began his painting career. He was inspired at a young age by Mozambique's most celebrated artist Malangatana Ngwenha. Arlindo Maunde is a storyteller who uses his art to tell simple stories about life in Africa and to capture the continent's undeniable beauty and boundless energy. He is a self-taught Mozambican artist known for his energetic portraits and wildlife paintings. Arlindo has experimented with a variety of media and techniques, but oil and acrylic on canvas remain the artist's favourites to this day. Arlindo has taken part in several group shows, artist residencies, and workshops. His works have been purchased by collectors in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, and other countries. While pouring through all of the wonderful African artifacts we’ve been getting in and uploading them to the website, a common and beautiful theme among them is maternity. I pulled together three images of maternity figures across African cultures for a homepage banner, and wound up tickled thinking of how unintentionally they feel like three stages of early motherhood: pregnancy (Yoruba), nursing (Afo), carrying your small child on your back with you as you move around you world (Agni).
