the third semester of p5r is wild if you think about it from sumire's perspective, and that's without even getting into the whole sumire/kasumi thing.

imagine you wake up one day and the entire world's a little bit fucked up for some reason. you see a building flickering in and out of existence (the same one where you awoke to some crazy JJBA stand powers, except last time it wasn't visable from the outside). so you call your friend/crush (??) because he knows more about this shit than you do, and he shows up with the idol and ace detective, trademarked 'pleasant-boy' goro akechi?? for some reason??? but hey, if he knows about the metaverse then that's good enough for you. he's a nice enough guy anyway but then you get INTO the metaverse, and his outfit is the edgiest thing you've ever seen, and the moment you get into a fight he's releasing what looks like years of pent up rage by screaming and laughing maniacally while absolutely tearing through shadows. and hes flirting (?) with your friend/crush (??) the whole time

but while he's literally calling your friend/crush (?) a loser and an idiot straight to his face, the meanest thing he calls you is a scardy-cat. he never refers to you by your first name and always uses the honorific '-san,' even while he's yelling. he commentates on every one of your kills like a deranged and zealous sports commentator. you think he respects you (???) youre not sure

I was gonna not make this post but it's gnawing at me from the inside

This is entirely unprompted

I think that the reason that I can't ship Akechi with just Joker is because whether or not he means to he does and can have deep, meaningful interactions with the other phantom thieves that are just as interesting as with Joker. There's nothing that's by necessity just interesting about their relationship that isn't interesting about the others.

What Akechi is to me, narratively, is a mirror that reflects whatever the thieves dislike about themselves the most. Like for Ryuji it's how quick he is to anger and how he feels like he has something to prove, for Ann it's that desire for revenge that sits under the surface of her skin that she never shows, for Yusuke there's so much that we would be here all day because they are so fundamentally similar in so many ways, for Haru it's the way he gets used by everyone in his life just like her and for Sumire they both pretend to be someone they aren't in order to be liked

I just think there's a lot of potential in making the other thieves look at themselves through Akechi in the same romantic lens that's put so heavily on joker and I think that Akechi should be making out sloppy with the thieves that I listed about it

Reasons why I love AkeSumi so much:

Black bird theming (Akechi-Crows and Sumi-Swans)

(Dark?) Prince/Princess dynamic

"Someone's going to die..." "Of FUN!!"

Just a teeny bit fucked up individuals.

False identities/identity crisis theming (complete with happy/cheerful facades)

More interesting interactions with and without their "masks"

More free range for post canon stuff

Canonically met each other before the main game's events.

Akechi doesn't come off as babying Sumi (that was part of my issue with ShuSumi) and is more blunt/straightforward with her in 3rd Sem, I HC that she appreciates that and even finds it refreshing.

While he doesn't seem to show it much, I do feel like he sympathizes with her past and situation and it contributed to him joining in rescuing her when she accepted the actualization at first.

Just super fascinating as a ship! She would be like the Beauty to his Beast... They're precious!

Lastly, I think they're not in Strikers because they're not only taking care of their own baggage but also met again and are secretly together... Shhh! ;)
