Monday, May 16: Life of Agony, “Empty Hole”

The Sound of Scars was billed as a sequel to River Runs Red, but songs like “Empty Hole” showed that Life of Agony wasn’t entirely trying to recreate their debut: the lyrics fit the narrative concept, but the music played like a continuation of the band’s last three records and Mina Caputo’s vocals reflected both the passage of time as well her own evolution as a singer.  The track was a lean banger the leaned more alternative than hardcore, with plenty of space for Caputo to bring the drama.  By this point, Life of Agony had honed in on a very specific sound, one that was not particularly in fashion but felt like a relatively organic development- after all, they began moving away from hardcore as early as their second album- and “Empty Hole” fit comfortably into their sweet spot.

Citroën Dyane 6, 1979. I have spent the weekend on the south coast of England in Sussex and spotted this near to where we we staying. It's a late series Dyane, the model was positioned up market of the 2CV and was designed by Robert Opron. It was in production from 1967 until 1983, with the Dyane 6 being powered by a 602cc flat twin engine. Perhaps most significantly of all it was parked outside the childhood home of Alan Turing.
