Deep Dive into Alastor's Situation

So we all remember this bit in Finale, where Alastor has a breakdown about his situation and deal correct? He wants to find a loophole so he can be back in control.

I've seen a lot of theories regarding how Alastor is feeling in this moment and what his deal could involve, but thus far they've all sort of missed something crucial. Alastor's power.

Alastor is highly disturbed by the fact that he almost died, let alone dying to protect people. He is freaked out that the deal has made him do this, whether as part of the deal itself or as a means to get back some semblance of control he had before the deal was struck.

Either way, based on what he says in this moment about wanting to find a loophole in order to unclip his wings

: "The constraints of my deal surely have a back door. Once I figure out how to unclip my wings, guess who will be pulling all the strings"

We can hazard a guess and say that this deal, despite us initially believing gave him power, has probably actually taken it away. Having one's wings clipped usually entails that someone is on a leash and cannot fully extend themselves.

This means that Alastor, as well as being forced into helping the hotel, has had his power taken away.

Now I do not say this lightly, I also think that this is the case because of Alastor's fight with Adam.

We all know Alastor likes to be in control, and in order to be in control, one must not overestimate another without the possibility of the loss of that control. Now, you could say that is exactly what happened in his fight with Adam, but that wouldn't necessarily warrant the reaction toward his deal the way he does in the song. If that were the case, Alastor would likely be more angry at himself than be panicked about his deal.

Therefore, we can guess that Alastor did not overestimate Adam, but rather himself. This means that at some point, he quite possibly did have the power to take out an angel but does not anymore. The fact that he is so surprised that Adam broke his mic that we can hear his true voice means that he expected to be able to block that attack.

This all comes back to the idea that Alastor has lost power through whatever deal he made. Which in turn makes us ask the question:

What did Alastor get in return?

If he lost enough power to the point he thought he could beat Adam and couldn't, what did he want so badly that he felt the need to sell his soul and power away?

I have no idea

BUT, I have thoughts.

I have seen theories saying that perhaps Alastor made this deal while he was alive, and he sold his soul to gain power while living. This, while possible, doesn't necessarily match up with what we know about his character.

Alastor is conniving. He's brilliant. He's a serial killer. He knows and understands nuance like the back of his hand. With how much time he spent in hell (he died in the 30s and according to the wiki, Katie Killjoy died in 1992 ((Helluva Boss also takes place in the 21st century but we don't know yet if Helluva Boss is canon to Amazon's Hazbin Hotel)) Alastor would have had ample time to figure out loopholes in his deal.

No, his deal definitely happened at some point during his seven-year absence, likely near the end for the same reason as the previous. Which, again, all connects back to Lillith, which means our likely culprit for this deal is Lillith OR the person responsible for Lillith's disappearance if not Lillith herself.

This all brings us back to two questions:

What deal did Alastor make?

What did he gain from it?

I love the theory that Alastor's deal forces him to smile for the sheer amount of mind fuckery that would cause

No matter how angry you get, no matter how hopeless you feel, you can't stop smiling. Always putting on an expression that suggests your fine when nothing could be the case

It get's even better if Alastor genuinely does love to smile all the time to keep people guessing, but now has no autonomy about it. All the power he derived from keeping up a smile is taken from him because he has no choice in it anymore

It's a sign of how helpless he really is, and no one will ever notice because he's been smiling all this time

To everyone else, there's no difference at all

Which means if Alastor ever gets over his ego and wants help, he has to actually ask for it. He has to put his pride aside and actually admit that he can't handle this on his own anymore

If anything, this would make for a great set up for his redemption arc (if he ever wants to get redeemed)

Here’s something I’ve been wondering about, like Mimzy talked about overlords going missing, no one knowing what happened to them, these strange radio broadcasts going out and then Alastor revealing himself as the Radio Demon, well, what I wonder is what if that’s a lie. Like Alastor wasn’t the real Radio Demon as it were, and just took advantage of the chaos to increase his rep, figuring he was beneath the focus of what was actually behind it. And that for centuries he was, until one day he wasn’t.

I've been staring at this and thinking I have so many theories going through my mind right now

Some thoughts and theories:

What if this has something to do with Zestial.

In this scene, we kind of see some fear in Alastor's eyes as he sees Zestial

What if Alastor got his power from Zestial and is afraid he knows about his lies.

Am I the only one who realised that Alastor's last name is Altruist which means (and I quote from the Cambridge Dictionary) "disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others" That is the complete opposite of what Alastor is! And I don't think Vivziepop did that for fun. I think that sets our boy Al up for some (possible) great character development! Some more understandable synonyms for altruist is "selfless", "self sacrifice" , "donor" and "giver"

I really hope we get a scene in season 2 where Alastor REALLY has to pick between the hotel and his own personal goals and wants. (Like Zuko in ATLA season 2) We hear in episode 7 that Alastor has grown to like the hotel...to some extent but that doesn't mean he can't change his mind!

This Might Just Be A Shot In the Dark But...

Now that I’m typing this, I feel so much stupider for even thinking it.

But I was gonna say that Alastor said “Unclip my wings,” which I at first thought “Wings? Angel?”

But now that I think about it, he used a lot of metaphors in that sequence, so I’m just stupid.

But! I do wanna do a little thinking about why Alastor is at the hotel and who he might have a deal with.

Cause while it could be Lilith, why? Why would he have a deal with Lilith?

Do you remember (if you’ve even seen it) those theories about the character “The Root of all Evil”? Or Roo, I guess.

Maybe it’s that character?

Also, for the hotel, I don’t think Lucifer wants the hotel hotel, but I think he wants something from the hotel.

He doesn’t want to be redeemed (maybe?)

I think he wants a power source from the hotel, or help from Charlie, which is why he had a big thing about making a deal with her.

He might want her help in breaking his deal.

The look on Alastor's face when he says that

He looks haunted, shaken, disturbed, and horrified by it

I've been joking about Alastor accidentally-ing himself into caring about the other characters

But on some level, it seems that it did happen

And he HATES it

It terrifies him

Perhaps it's because Alastor understands that on some level this proves him wrong, sinners are not beyond hope, there is a chance to be better, and that's bad for him because it's easy to revel and wallow in being an evil monster when there's no hope of being anything else, but when there isn't, well, that means Alastor might have to face who he is and what he's done

Alternatively, Al wants to be a horrible monster, feared hated and infamous, and if he becomes some kind and benevolent person, even to just those he considers friends, it's a chip in his reputation and the persona he wants to be seen as

Or perhaps Al's breakdown is because if he cares about anyone, then that's a weakness someone can exploit, another string holding him back, something he's desperate to not have

Given that Alastor was a serial killer in life, I can only imagine how his victims would feel about meeting him in hell

I mean, there’s no doubt that at least some of his victims were also sinners, so there’s a chance of them meeting each other again

Just imagine what their reactions would be to seeing their killer show up in hell, completely tear through the overlords of the time, rise to the top of the hierarchy of sinners, and than come after you for a second time, only he’s not here to kill you, but to own your soul

Not only did he rob you of your life, but now you’re forced to serve him in death as well

That would be some high levels of cruelty

I see a ton of people going on about how we might see Alastor frown for the first time when he's like genuinely upset or something. But has anyone ever thought about the fact he literally has his mouth sown into a permanent smile so he actually can't frown at all??

In the finale he goes into his radio station and is genuinely distressed over the fact someone has power over him. Hes injured and alone in his radio station, he has no reason to keep up a facade for anyone and yet he still has that smile on his face

In this frame you can see the thread connecting his mouth. Firstly, since it isn't visible while he isn't using his demonic powers it might be related to the own deal he made with whoever he sold his own soul to, it might be a way to silence him or keep him from using his full powers?
