Matt Sturniolo x reader
Summary: Where it's Y/N's wedding day, but Matt isn't the groom. During the ceremony, an act of impulse on the boy's part changes the fate of everything.
Warning: Slightly angst, but with a happy ending!
Requested?: Yes, by anon.

The cool orange color of the corner lamp lightly illuminated the walls of Matt's room, painting the room with a serene aura. He was still in his bed, mentally preparing himself to get up and start the day slowly, his thoughts still hazy from sleep, a low voice reminding him of the tasks he had to do - writing the script for the next video, answering emails, and posting his collaboration with Prada.
For a moment, he allowed himself to bask in the feeling of tranquility, but that peace was abruptly interrupted when the sound of his bedroom door slamming open echoed through the walls.
Matt turned abruptly to the source of the sound, frowning and opening his mouth to curse whoever had barged into his room so suddenly, but the words caught in his throat when he saw Nick standing there, his eyes wide and his hand holding an envelope tightly.
"Nick, what the fuck?" Matt's voice sounded hoarse and rough from lack of use as his eyes traveled from Nick's face to the envelope and back again.
"Matt... It's from Y/N." Nick muttered apprehensively.
The boy sat down abruptly on the mattress when he heard his ex name, watching Nick slowly approaching and leaving the envelope on the crumpled comforter that covered the younger boy's legs.
"I don't know what it's about, I just found it on the floor in front of the front door."
Matt took the paper delicately, a feeling of apprehension growing in his chest as he recognized Y/N's elegant handwriting on the sender, his own name, and his brother's in the recipient field. His mind wondered why she had sent that, who even sends letters through mail in 2024?
With shaking hands, he tore open the envelope and removed the paper inside, barely noticing Nick's silent exit. His heart sank when he noticed that it wasn't just any paper. It was an invitation... a wedding invitation.
The words printed in embossed letters and in gold color on high quality paper, announcing the day she would become the wife of her current boyfriend, or rather, fiancé.
An overwhelming mix of emotions hit him head-on. Matt gasped, holding the invitation as if it were a precious artifact, but also a knife that pierced his heart. He could feel the bitter taste of regret filling his mouth as his memories with Y/N flooded his mind.
He found himself transported back to the happy days when they were together, each moment shining in vivid colors before his eyes. The shared laughter, the hugs on cold or hot nights, the whispered promises of eternal love... Everything seemed so close, and yet so far away.
Tears threatened to flood his eyes as he struggled to process the magnitude of the situation. He bitterly regretted letting Y/N go, letting his insecurities and fears ruin what they shared. He knew he had no one else to blame but himself for his own loneliness.
A violent internal struggle unfolded within the boy. A part of him wanted to throw the invitation through the window, refuse to witness the ceremony that would tear him up even more inside. But another part, a stubborn and masochistic part, insisted on attending, as if seeing Y/N unite with another man was the punishment he deserved for his failures.
Matt clutched the invitation tightly in his hand, lightly crumpling the expensive paper, feeling fragile and broken. Every beat of his heart echoed with the weight of a decision he didn't know if he was capable of making. He felt the weight of loss pressing down on his shoulders, the pain of a wound that never seemed to heal.
Silent tears streamed down his cheeks as he fought his emotions in turmoil. He loved Y/N more than anything in this world, and even though he had already lost her the day he saw her walk through his bedroom door for the last time, he still held on to the narrow thread of hope he had in him, but now he was in danger of losing her forever, and it tormented him to the core of his soul.
With an anguished sigh, Matt finally let out a choked sob, pressing his hand against his mouth to muffle the ugly sounds, quickly glancing at the door left ajar by Nick. The last thing he wanted was to worry his brothers.
He knew he had no choice but to face the painful reality that Y/N would move on without him. He wished, with all his being, that things could have been different, that he could go back in time and right the wrongs he had made.
But now, all he could do was accept the invitation he held in his trembling hand and prepare to witness the love of his life being given to someone else.
༻﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡༺
Matt took a deep breath as he, along with his brothers, entered the imposing church where Y/N's wedding was about to take place. The decor details seemed to jump out, a lush fusion of fresh flowers - Y/N's favorite - and delicate fabrics, creating a fairytale atmosphere, exactly as he and Y/N had fantasized about for so many nights.
The rows of chairs were lined up precisely, each adorned with a floral arrangement. Matt watched the carefully planned details, feeling a pang in his heart.
As he rotated his gaze around the space, his eyes met Y/N's parents accompanied by her fiancé, who was already looking back at the triplets. Matt's eyes widened slightly when he noticed the man open a gentle smile towards him, a strange feeling of resignation and envy flooding him almost automatically.
Victor, who he saw so much of only through Y/N's social media, was tall, with slightly curly brown hair that shone in the light, and vibrant blue eyes that seemed to reflect genuine joy. Matt couldn't help but notice how he perfectly fit the stereotype of the type of man Y/N always seemed to prefer - an observation that left a sour taste in his mouth.
The boy wondered if Y/N really had a specific type or if it was just a coincidence that he and her fiancé shared similar characteristics.
He forced himself to look away, his mind a mess of conflicting emotions and his heart screaming that he should just turn around and go back home. With a resigned sigh, Matt followed his brothers as they found their assigned seats.
༻﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡﹡༺
Matt's heart was in turmoil as he anxiously awaited the long-awaited moment of the bride's entrance. His eyes darted nervously around the church, his breath caught in his throat as he tried to control the flood of thoughts that threatened to consume him.
And then, as if time had slowed down, soft music filled the air, announcing Y/N's arrival. His breath seemed to catch as he saw her appear in the aisle, a glimpse of ethereal beauty in her stunning wedding dress. His heart was filled with a mix of joy and pain when he saw her so perfect.
Matt thought he would only see her in a wedding dress on their own wedding day.
Tears threatened to blur his vision as he fought to hold them back. He wanted to scream from the rooftops and release all his pent-up anger, but his words were lost in the void of his silent anguish.
"Matt, are you okay?" Chris asked beside him in an almost muted whisper, only receiving a short nod in return.
As she approached the altar, Matt felt his leg begin to bounce involuntarily in a mixture of anxiety and hesitation. Every step she took seemed to sound like an echo in his own broken heart, a constant reminder of what could have been but would never be.
He had to do something.
When Y/N finally reached the foot of the altar, Matt clenched his right hand into a fist tightly, his teeth biting his thumbnail in a desperate attempt to contain whatever was wanting to come out. He watched with a lump in his throat as she and Victor turned face-to-face, everything sounding muffled against his ears.
He had to.
Every word spoken was like a knife in his heart. He wondered if Y/N could feel the intensity of his emotions, if she could see the love and sadness mixed in his eyes as her own eyes circled the room momentarily, carrying a mix of nervousness and anxiety.
Silence hung in the church, heavy and dense, as the priest finished his solemn last words.
"If anyone has anything to say against this union, speak now or forever remain silent." Finally came the phrase so feared and long awaited.
The priest's voice echoed through the sacred space, resounding off the walls as the guests held their breath. Matt felt his heart hammer in his chest, almost hearing it in his ears, a tumultuous mix of fear and determination swirling in his mind.
He needed to.
And then, before he could think twice, before he could stop the urge that welled up inside him, Matt stood up. His body acted on instinct, his chair scraping with a harsh sound against the floor at the abrupt movement of his body.
The loud sound cut through the silence like a knife, causing the guests to turn to his figure in shock, eyes wide in horror. The priest raised his eyebrows in surprise, his words frozen on his lips as he watched the scene unfold before his eyes.
Victor, Y/N's fiancé, looked at Matt with flaming hatred in his eyes, a completely different expression than the one he displayed moments before the ceremony. He knew who Matt was, and he knew Matt would mean trouble for him.
But Matt ignored all of this. At that moment, all that mattered was Y/N. His blue eyes brimming with fear and love looked intensely into Y/N's shocked ones, who seemed frozen in place.
"I-I..." Y/N began, clearing her throat and turning to face the sea of guests. "I need a moment."
And then, without waiting for a response or further intervention, Y/N got down from the altar and turned around, starting to run towards the back of the church. Her footsteps echoed in the silence with the click of her high heels against the floor, each beat of her heart matching the frantic pace of her run.
"Matt!" Nick called through gritted teeth, quickly glancing at the people around him as he raised his right hand, holding Matt's wrist tightly. "Sit down, now."
Matt barely had time to process what was happening before his instincts took over again, pulling his wrist from Nick's grip quickly. He ignored the confused murmurs of the guests accompanying him as he ran after Y/N.
He had to reach her, had to find a way to explain himself, to convince her to listen. He couldn't let her go without a fight, not after everything he had risked.
Matt's feet pounded the church floor as he ran, his heart beating wildly in his chest. He barely noticed Victor's screams echoing behind him, barely noticed the dirty looks that glared at his back as he chased the only love he'd ever had. All that mattered was reaching Y/N, holding her hand, and never letting it go again.
Matt pushed open the back doors of the church hard, his mind spinning in a whirlwind as he prepared to face whatever was on the other side.
He was expecting the worst - a furious face, eyes full of rage, cutting words thrown his way. But what he found was the complete opposite of that.
Y/N's figure was there, just a few feet away. She held her heels in one of her hands, her veil was lying on the floor next to her bare feet, and her beautiful dress was rumpled, but there was a huge smile on her face, and her eyes showed an intense relief.
Matt frowned in confusion, his own mind in turmoil as he tried to process what was happening. The boy expected her to confront him, to blame him for interrupting her perfect day, for destroying her dreams. But not that.
Before he could do anything, Y/N dropped her heels onto the delicate veil before running towards him, her steps quick and purposeful. She stopped before Matt, her eyes shining with an intensity that left him speechless.
Without hesitation, the girl raised her hands towards his face, cupping his red, hot cheeks, her fingers touching his skin with a tenderness that made him shiver. And then, so suddenly, she pulled him towards her, her lips meeting his in a deep, desperate kiss.
Matt felt the world disappear around him as he gave himself over to the gesture, all his questions slipping from his mind, his hands finding their place around Y/N's waist almost automatically, as if it was marked into his soul.
He could feel the warmth of her body against his, the soft touch of her lips against his own, and Matt had never, until that moment, truly understood how much he missed that.
Matt's lips gently parted from Y/N's seconds later, his eyes remained fixed on her face, as if trying to decipher a complex riddle. He felt the euphoria of the moment still pulsing through his veins, but a sense of confusion was still mixed with the intensity of it all.
"I... I don't understand." The boy murmured, his voice barely above a whisper as he struggled to find the right words to express the whirlwind of thoughts that assaulted him.
Y/N shook her head, a soft smile still playing on his lips. She pulled away slightly, maintaining eye contact with Matt.
"I know this is all very confusing." She began, her voice soft and comforting. "But I'm so happy, Matt. So happy and relieved that you're here."
Matt's confusion deepened even further as he took in her words. He couldn't understand how she could be so serene and happy after everything that happened and what he did with her special date.
The boy felt a weight on his shoulders and an immense desire to look behind his shoulders towards the door, feeling as if someone would open it at any moment and expose them to the public.
"When I sent the invitation." Y/N continued. "I felt scared. Scared that you wouldn't show up, that you would choose not to be here. But deep down, I knew you would come. I knew you wouldn't let me down."
Her words hit the brunette like a wave of comforting heat. He watched her intensely, his racing heart overflowing with love as goosebumps ran through his whole body.
"Don't get me wrong, Victor is an amazing guy, but... Matt, he's not you. He never was. No one will ever be you." She unbuttoned her lace sleeves before rolling them up, ripping off the flower that was attached to the fake belt at her waist and throwing it over her heels.
She really was something.
"Y/N-"
"Run away with me?
Y/N's suggestion left Matt speechless. His body remained static as his eyes stared at her, his orbs filled with shock and disbelief. He never imagined that she could suggest something so radical.
"Matt, please, we have to go. Run away with me."
A smirk slowly grew onto Matt's face before he took her right hand in his, pulling her close tightly and picking her up in one quick movement, his right arm supporting her back and his hand gripping her waist tightly, while his left arm held her legs beneath her knees, pressing her against his body.
A squeal escaped Y/N's throat, who wrapped her arms around his neck and placed her hands on the back of his head tightly, hiding her face in the crook of his shoulder, a loud laughter passing through her lips.
"You're unbelievable, pretty girl... Come on, let's go."
So glad you were around when they said: Speak Now.

𝐈𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐤𝐨𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐚!
--------------------------------->
Note: This writing contains mentions of Cannibalism, kidnapping and a little bit of gore, if you are sensitive about those kind of things, please dni! Also, this my first fanfic on tumblr, so there may be any mistakes, i apologize for my poor writing, enjoy!
---------------------- ♡ --------------------------
"Cannibalism cases have increased in the vicinity of Yokohama, the police are investigating the situation."
This article was written in a corner of the newspaper that Ranpo was reading out of boredom, written in black, matte ink and printed on dry paper. "It is said that the victims have only one connection—they all died of cold." Ranpo read this article, muttering under his breath, the sentences before his eyes strangely attracted his attention, unfortunately... not enough to prevent him from throwing the paper aside. It was another day when the armed detective agency was busy, minding their own business without anyone knowing that this would be the beginning of events—assuming that Dazai didn't skimp on work, of course.
The sun was shining on top of yokohama, it was quite hot.
It's the perfect day for an ice cream.
It was Ranpo's idea to turn this hot weather into a good opportunity, after all, ice cream makes everyone happy!! Isn't it? A cold dessert with chocolate, mint, strawberry and many other flavors!! This would be a nice opportunity for him to relax during the summer days—but first... he should go to an ice cream shop to get ice cream. The only problem is, he doesn't know how to go back to the armed detective agency. That means; ranpo needs someone.. but who could it be?
"Ranpo-san?.. are you okay? you've been staring into space for a few minutes." When Ranpo's thoughts were interrupted by Atsushi's slightly worried voice, Ranpo's eyes opened slightly, revealing green, emerald colored orbs of his. He turned his head to the white-haired boy next to him, who was carrying several stacks of papers in his hands, towards Atsushi. At that moment, Ranpo felt the excitement pulsing in his veins. What he was looking for was at his feet and he didn't even tire himself for it!
"Ah.. Atsushi-kun, it's nothing you need to worry about." Ranpo took the pink lollipop out of his mouth and looked at the ceiling while leaning his head on the far end of his chair, knowing that Atsushi noticed the absent-mindedness on his face. "I just.. want to go get ice cream, but you know!! Tch, of course I can't go by myself.." "Can you help me, Atsushi-kun!!?—if you help, maybe I can give you a lollipop.. maybe." Ranpo quickly stood up from his office chair and looked at Atsushi with a grin on his face, although it was an innocent and sweet looking grin, it was sudden enough to surprise Atsushi. “Huh?- me..?- okay.. okay.”
"Yipeee!! Thank you so much Atsushi-kun!!!"
____
"Ugh... so hot." These thoughts ran through Atsushi's mind as he walked following Ranpo, his brows were furrowed, and he could easily feel the sweat running down his forehead, it was the middle of summer after all... why wouldn't it be hot? Well, at least these were the questions he asked himself to reassure himself. The sun in the sky was shining like there was no tomorrow, giving its warmth to the earth, the sounds of people talking as cars passed by on the street were nothing but a white noise, Ranpo was walking with light steps, ignoring the heat as much as he could, but he still couldn't help but whine childishly, naturally. Such things were in Ranpo's nature, Ranpo turned his head to Atsushi walking behind him and looked at him sullenly.

Hand and Eye: Making the Publication
Before I set up the indesign document, I decided to make a very rough saddle stitched booklet with labels of what is in what page and numbers in order to know what to expect of how things should look when I print them. As I had planned, there were a few pages that had to be added in blank due to it having to be a multiple of 4, however this mini dummy also made me realise I can simply glue a few of these pages together so they are not that many.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I set up the indesign document like this:
I noticed that the quality on my screen was bad, but I knew that indesign diminishes the resolution in order to run better. To make sure, I printed a cheap page on my printer at home to see how it would come out, and it was not pixelated like on my screen.
Now with the file set up, I tried my first print of it using an ivory fabriano paper that had a slight shine and texture and I felt it would emphasise my work. It came out like this:
Tumblr media
There were a few challenges that came up with this print that made me not be able to bind this copy, and have to go back to indesign:
1) while the paper made my work look really nice and I loved the finish, I completely forgot to consider that the texture should be on both sides, which it was not. This made the aesthetic and texture inconsistent throughout, making the paper not a viable option for this project.
2) The printers at school, when printing double sided, inverts the second side and makes it upside down. Therefore, half my pages were upside down, and so this first print was completely unsuccessful.
Tumblr media
shiny side with fabriano finish
Tumblr media
side without fabriano finish (matte)
I searched on the internet if there was any way to make indesign aware that the second page will be inverted so that it would set up the pdf correctly, but I could not find this information. All information I found said it would have to be a change to the printer settings itself, and since I do not have access to these specific ones since this is a shared printer in school, I had to find a new solution, which was flipping the images manually on indesign. I quickly realised that I would not be able to use the "print a booklet" setting anymore, so I used this guide in order to set up each page exactly how it should be, and then completely flipping each spread upside down, using shift to make sure it was a perfect 180 flip.
Tumblr media
When setting up the pdf for printing, I also realised that the first page of the would-be cover was being acknowledged, so I had to isolate the range to ignore the first lonely page. This time I printed on the paper that was already on the printer, as I knew it was a nice good quality smooth matte paper. While it did not have the same texture as the fabriano paper, I did not find another similar option to my satisfaction that had the same finish in both sides. So I decided instead on the smooth paper, which while it did not give the extra texture, it does not distract from the pencil art style and allows the reader to see every brush clearly

Any printer can print a photo, but some printers do it better. When choosing the best photo printer, there is no clear-cut winner, as so many brands compete for this title. To keep it simple, we have listed a few Canon models. The printer yields an incredible number of prints without you needing to worry about the running cost. It can produce snapshot-size photos for pennies. Its low list price and low running cost is its major highlight. Considering all aspects, such as features, print speed, and capacity, its performance was average. Still, its ability to produce high-quality prints for fractions of a cent makes it an ideal choice for home and office use.
Its major drawback is that it doesn’t have an automatic document feeder(ADF), but its high-resolution flatbed scanner captures all the details in old photos and documents you want to save. The Best Cheap Photo Printer: Canon PIXMA MG3620
If you have a limited budget and are willing to give up a few features, then Canon PIXMA MG3620 is a great option. It’s one of the best printers you can find in this segment. It’s a simple wireless multifunction printer for people who don’t want to pay extra for features they don’t need. An LCD control panel and automatic document feeder (ADF) will not be present in PIXMA MG3620. It can perform most of the printing operations at better than average speeds. It can print good-quality photos capturing all the details and decent color accuracy. For example, it takes only 50 seconds to print a 4×6″ image on glossy paper. For some, the speed is enough, but some may find its speed a bit slow.
The printer only uses two ink cartridges: one black and one tri-color. Although its overall cost-per-print remains low, as the ink cartridges are cheap, they will only last for a while. After that, you will have to replace them often. Moreover, you must replace the whole cartridge even if only a single color runs out since the printer uses tri-color cartridges. However, XL ink cartridges are available, but you will need to produce a different amount of prints. But since the ink cartridges are cheap, your overall maintenance cost will be low.
Visit at- ij start canon.
Reasons to Buy
Low cost-per-print
Excellent graphics and photo print quality with decent color accuracy
Excellent photo scan quality
XL and XXL ink cartridge options are available

FAQ
Which type of printer produces the best professional-looking photos?
If you want to print high-quality color images, Inkjet photo printers are the best, as they have better tonal variety and are also good at blending colors. However, laser printers have a limited color gamut and cannot reproduce certain colors.
Is it a good idea to buy a portable photo printer?
If portability is your main concern, then the answer is yes. But the major downside of portable photo printers is that you won’t be able to print large-size photos, and your printing capacity will be limited to 2’x3″2’x3″ photos. In addition, the ink and paper used by the portable printer are costly.
Do the printed photos fade with time, and how can you make them last longer?
Yes, even the most inedible images can fade over time. However, some printers with Chroma Optimizer can improve the longevity and shine of the photos. One such printer is the Canon image PROGRAF PRO-300.

Printing my Personal Project
Originally, my plan was to print wit Loxley Colour in Cumbernauld, as it was near to me and fairly cheap so I could afford it. It was also the print place my high school used each year so I knew they were reliable and of good quality. However, when it came to the website I had uploaded, re positioned and added my prints to my basket, I ran into a problem. The website crashed and would not re-load. It did this for over a day and I became increasingly anxious that I would not receive my prints on time for submission date. So I did some research on Google, and with my classmates to see what could be a good replacement.
Tumblr media
I ended up landing on Deadly Digital as it seemed to be a lot of peoples go-to, and was also the photo lab that the college recommended. The prints were then ordered on the Friday, 6 days before the due date. As I was communicating through email it took a bit of time to discuss what I wanted. This was also made difficult through their system of ordering prints. Unlike other websites that would allow me to choose my print size and paper type before ordering, Deadly Digital had me upload and order JPEG files and then decide on paper size and type through the emails I mentioned. This was stressful because I didn’t know this is how they operated and was a bit lost on what was happening with my prints.
Tumblr media
However, they ended up being very quick with replies which made things a lot easier, and it was really reassuring talking to an actual person so I knew where my prints were and at what stage they were at. I even phoned on the Monday to see if they would be ready by submission day, and they were by days in advance. I also managed to have my paper type changed over the phone on the same day which was very reliving.
I didn’t leave myself in enough time to order samples, so I went off of the websites images to see what paper type I would like. From their images, I thought that Giclee Pearl would be the most fitting, my project reflected people standing up to beauty standards and shining through as their authentic self, so I thought a small shine to the image would fit best.
Upon being given a Deadly Digital paper print book in post production class on the Monday, I realised I really wasn’t a fan of the Pearl paper. I started to panic a little bit because I wanted to change my paper. So on our break, I phoned deadly digital and they changed it with no issues at all.
Tumblr media
I chose Photorag because of its sleek, soft look. I decided I didn’t want anything that would be too harsh or distract from my images as the more I thought about it I realised that my images would be much more powerful and stylish with a matte, soft look paper, it would create a sort of juxtaposition against this as the images hold a lot of empowerment and strength which I feel is only enhanced by the paper.
I ended up really happy with my prints and glad that I made the changes I did. I will definitely be using Deadly Digital again for future prints.

Out Of The Woods - college!AU - PART 3
Tumblr media
A/N: I’m partial to this chapter, but perhaps that’s just me. I’ve not gotten a lot of feedback on this series sooooo idk if I’m just sharing it for me at this point lol but I’m having fun and that’s what matters, right?! Anyways I’m always around for thoughts, feelings, questions!
Only an essay, a few chapters of reading, and a couple shifts at work separated you from your hang out with Nikolai. You found yourself wondering what he was up to, what made him smile that day, what he’d look like on top of you now. That last one tended to linger a minute before you violently shook it from your head. You hardly knew each other anymore, not to mention you had a boyfriend- you couldn’t let yourself start to fantasize about him like that. But he was so sweet and gentle, so sassy and smart. It didn’t hurt that he was still painfully handsome either.
You were sitting at work, more or less twiddling your thumbs, when you felt a buzzing against the white countertop of the receptionist desk you sat behind. When you looked at the screen, an unknown number appeared. You unlocked your phone and opened your texts. Seeing the first line preview made your heart leap into your throat immediately.
N: Hey it’s Nik. Just thought you should have my number too :)
Y: Hey there you glad you didn’t lose that paper
N: I could never! What are you up to?
Y: Just at work, pretty slow today so I’m kinda bored
N: Hopefully I can keep you a little company. Where do you work?
Y: John Richard Salon- it’s that one downtown across from that hot dog place
N: Oh yeah! Seen it a million times. Do you do hair? Is that a secret talent of yours?
Y: God no lol I’d be horrible at it. I don’t have the dexterity for it. I’m just their receptionist
N: “Just” please I’m sure you’re their best employee
You stopped to roll your eyes, but also couldn’t stop the heat from rising on your cheeks.
N: Do you like it?
Y: It’s pretty good for a low responsibility job- it pays the bills too so I’m not complaining
N: That always helps
Your name had been called from off to your side, making your head snap up and you locked eyes with Deja, who was easily your favorite coworker. “And just what has you smiling like an idiot? Hm?” she asked with a smirk and leaned across the counter from you.
“Remember that guy I was telling you about from the party?”
“Oh yeah, the one you fucked in high school?” she teased.
You let out a long sigh. “Well, he just texted me. We’re supposed to hang out on Friday,” you said confidently, raising your chin in her direction to show her there was nothing of consequence going on between you and Nikolai.
“Hang out. Is that what they’re calling it these days?” Deja looked at you with a raised eyebrow and you could only respond with a look of your own.
“Oh my god, shut up,” you laughed. “Seriously. We haven’t hung out in years and it’s nice to have someone to hang out with who knows me. And wants to hang out with me,” you added under your breath.
“Don’t tell me Matt is back on his bullshit…”
You simply raised your thumb and index finger just slightly apart, squinting at the space between them.
As you were catching her up on the last week, John walked over and flipped over the open sign, locking the glass door in front of him. You took that as your sign to help clean up so you could get out of there as soon as possible. The girls all pitched in, sweeping up the few stray clumps of hair on the old wooden floor and wiped down all the counters for the morning.
While you were on the bus for the short ride back to your apartment, you suddenly remembered the conversation you were having with Nikolai before you closed up shop. You cursed under your breath and pulled out your phone again, quickly thumbing a message back.
Y: Sorry! I got caught up closing
N: No sorry needed, you were at work after all
Y: lol I suppose that’s true. They don’t pay me to sit around and look pretty
N: They should
Y: Oh god lol stop
N: Have I told you that I’m really looking forward to Friday?
Y: No but I’m looking forward to it too
You had since made it home and crawled into bed, happy to finally be off your feet and talking to the boy who disarmed you with a single smile. For the next few hours, the two of you texted back and forth, mostly about classes and work, but you couldn’t stop yourself from occasionally flirting with Nikolai. You really needed to work on actively not doing that, but you allowed yourself one last evening of toying with him. When the clock rolled over to 1am, the lids of your eyes were beginning to grow heavy and a long yawn escaped from your lips.
Y: I think I’m going to fall asleep on you I’m sorry
N: Holy shit I didn’t realize it was so late
N: I should get to bed too. I have a presentation in the morning
Y: Don’t let me keep you up!
N: But darling that’s all I want ;)
N: Sweet dreams- I’ll see you Friday
Y: Goodnight Nik
-----
Friday finally came and you were nervous as you fixed your hair one last time in the wide bathroom mirror. You opted for tight jeans, a pretty low cut tank, and a zip up hoodie. There was no way you were going to just hang out at his house looking like you were ready for the club, but you still wanted to remind Nikolai that you were cute. Genya had already left for the night, so you weren’t able to have a second set of eyes give your outfit the final approval; you could really use the reassurance right about now. As you casually boosted your chest one more time, there was a light knock at the front door. You opened it to Nikolai in a skin-tight tee for your school and a light canvas jacket. His hair was perfectly disheveled and his jeans clung tight to his thick thighs. You caught him giving you a long onceover before giving you a wide smile.
“You look amazing,” he breathed out, pulling you in for a tight embrace. You let your hands wander over his broad back, exploring the pull of his muscles under his jacket.
“You don’t look so bad yourself,” you smirked as you pulled apart. You locked up behind you and let Nikolai walk you downstairs and out to his car.
“Pizza?” he asked, one hand low on your back, the other gesturing vaguely you assumed in the direction of the car.
“I thought you’d never ask,” you smiled from ear to ear. Immediately, you could see the tension leave Nikolai’s shoulders. As you stepped foot into the parking lot, the sky decided it was the perfect time to open up and unleashed a sheet of rain unlike any you’d had so far this fall. You yelped as it began to pour, throwing your hood over your head. Nikolai acted quickly and threw off his jacket, holding it high above your head to keep you dry as you both splashed quickly to his car. This gesture made your heart swell; you were starting to think Nikolai may be a real lift knight in shining armor. He opened your door and made sure you were out of the rain before joining you and whipping his soaked coat in the backseat. You were both laughing at the situation and he was visibly relieved that you took the whole hiccup in stride. “Let’s get fucking dry ,” you laughed and he needed no further request to set off in the direction of his apartment.
Nikolai actually didn’t live too far from you, you realized when he pulled up across the street from the brown duplex. It was still raining when you parked and you again sprinted to the front porch in a desperate attempt to stay a little dry. When you got close to the door, you realized that it was a lot louder inside than you thought it would be. Nikolai must have noticed too because his jaw immediately set, irritation flashing behind his hazel eyes.
“Fucking Aleks,” he muttered under his breath before pushing the door open. A large party was taking place, unbeknownst to Nikolai. There were people passing in front of them, a lively game of beer pong in process, and more than one person going through their cupboards. Nikolai gestured for you to head inside and he slammed the door shut behind him. “Do you mind waiting here for just one second? I have to talk to Aleks quick,” he asked quietly into your ear, his hand resting on the side of your face. You nodded and he gave you a small smile before setting off for the kitchen. Aleks was laughing against the fridge with a couple other guys, barely registering it when Nikolai was standing in front of him, arms crossed tight over his chest.
“Dude! I thought you said you were going to the baseball house!” Nikolai scolded.
“Nikolai! I’m so glad you’re here, man. No, we decided to have people over here instead. We’re always at the baseball house,” Aleks smiled, giving Nikolai a friendly punch to his shoulder; Nikolai didn’t budge an inch.
“I kinda had plans here tonight, remember?” he said through gritted teeth, giving a small nod back towards where you stood. Aleks’s face dropped as it all came back to him.
“I am so sorry man, I totally forgot.”
“Obviously,” Nikolai scoffed.
“I mean it. It slipped my mind. I’m really sorry dude.” It was hard for Nikolai to stay mad at Aleks for long, if at all. You saw Aleks give Nikolai a long hug, evidently sorting out whatever disagreement they just had. Nikolai made his way back to you, a little less high strung.
“C’mon,” he said and took your hand, leading you around the corner to a short hallway. He led you into a room and quietly shut the door behind you. The first thing that struck you was all of the maps and works in progress strewn across his desk and hanging on the walls. You walked around in awe and marveled at Nikolai’s decor. He had numerous prints of classic paintings and frescoes, almost all of them related to myths or historical events.
“Nikolai, this is amazing! It’s so,” your head was spinning as you looked at all of his art, “it’s incredible.” You turned back to him and he was right behind you, an amused smile pulling at his lips.
“I’m so sorry. I thought we’d be able to come and spend some time together without 80 other people.” He looked genuinely upset that he couldn’t follow through with his plan of having dinner and talking all night on the couch.
“Hey, it’s ok. We can still hang out. Why don’t we make an appearance, play a game of beer pong or whatever, and then we can watch a movie in here or something?” you offered. Nikolai’s face lifted a little at that and he lightly squeezed your hand, nodding his head in agreement. “I gotta get out of this hoodie, though. It’s fucking soaking,” you laughed.
You shed the wet garment and hung it carefully on the back of one of the chairs near you. Nikolai had changed out of his wet shirt as well; he must have moved in the blink of an eye because you didn’t even notice him switch clothes. When you looked at him again, his gaze was fixed on you, his expression hard to read. “What is it?” you finally asked with a nervous laugh as punctuation.
“You’re so pretty,” he said with a small smile. You looked down at yourself- your hair was a complete rat's nest, shirt and jeans soaked through, and though you hadn’t looked in a mirror you could feel your makeup was a mess too. And here he was, arguably the most handsome man you’d ever met, lost for words as you stood in front of him. You bit down on your bottom lip and shook your head before taking him by the hand and leading him back into the party.
Nikolai grabbed each of you a drink and you wandered together to the beer pong table where Aleks was taking his last shot with his partner. Aleks grinned when he saw the two of you walk up and declared he was playing you next after he ‘kicked their ass’. He sunk the last shot and whooped loudly, high-fiving with his partner. Nikolai took his place on the opposite end of the table with you and re-racked the cups.
“Sorry I’m about to embarrass you in front of your date, Nik,” Aleks smirked arrogantly. Nikolai only bounced the light ball against the table top, catching it swiftly on the back of his long fingers. He repeated the trick, unbothered by Aleks and his shit talking, also not correcting him that you were not in fact on a date.
“We’ll just see about that,” he laughed as his first shot sank directly into the front cup. You giggled with him and took a shot of your own, somehow making another shot. You’d played a few times before, but you didn’t consider yourself skilled by any means- certainly not as skilled as these boys. Nikolai was so proud of you, he threw his arm over your shoulder and pulled you into his side. “Good luck, man.”
Aleks was frustrated as his winning streak began to slip through his fingers. Nikolai was clearly the better player, which was making Aleks crazy, though he had also had about five more drinks than Nikolai. You only made one more shot after your beginner’s luck, but Nikolai didn’t mind at all. He happily carried your team and took care of the remaining cups, always encouraging you when you made a lousy toss. Before long, Nikolai was flicking his wrists high over his head like he was making a free throw and sinking the winning shot. The small crowd around the table cheered and Aleks grumpily crossed his arms. Nikolai gathered you in his arms and lifted you easily off the ground, spinning you with him as you celebrated your very first beer pong victory, all thanks to Nikolai.
“Better luck next time!” you taunted sarcastically and Aleks finally gave you a small smile. The next team in line took your spot and you slid back into the crowd undetected and back to Nikolai’s room. “I didn’t know you were good at every sport,” you teased before taking a seat on the edge of his bed.
“Is beer pong really a sport?” he asked with a raised eyebrow. He walked over to stand in front of you and ran his hand over your finally drying hair. “Movie time?”
“Yes,” you replied simply, possibly a little too quickly. Nikolai smiled at you before walking over to his bed. He pulled back the covers and crawled onto his side of the bed, patting the spot next to him, inviting you in. He had chosen some movie to put on evidently, but you truthfully didn’t notice what. You flicked off the lights and jumped in next to him with a smile. Nikolai laid out on his back and you curled up comfortably on his chest.
“I had a really good time tonight, rain storm and surprise party and all,” he said, his voice low in your ear.
“Me too,” you said with a smile, still distracted by the art on his walls. “What inspired your decor choices?”
Nikolai turned his head to look at the picture of the Minotaur over his desk. “As you know, I’m a history major,” he started. “My concentration is in classical studies, specifically the Hellenistic period.” He rolled his neck to face you again. “That’s actually my favorite myth.”
“You know, for being a creative writing major, my Greek mythology is a little rusty,” you prompted, leveling your most charming smile at Nikolai.
“Would you like me to regale you with the tale?” he asked with a dramatic flourish.
“I’m all ears, Mr. Lantsov,” you laughed, positioning yourself so you could rest your chin on your hands laying on his chest and gaze up at him.
“Alright. So, Minos had just become the ruler of the island of Crete, but was still in competition with his brother for power. He prayed to Poseidon to send him a sign of the god’s favor- a bright white bull. Minos was tasked to sacrifice the bull to honor Poseidon, but he was so enamored with the bull that he decided to keep him, believing Poseidon would accept an alternate sacrifice.” Nikolai absently petted your hair.
“But he didn’t?”
“He did not,” Nikolai laughed. “As punishment, Poseidon made Minos’ wife, Pasipahae, fall in love with the bull.”
“Such a Greek god thing to do.” You smiled up at him.
“Isn’t it?” Nikolai beamed back. “Pasiphae had the master craftsman Daedalus create a hollow, wooden cow for her to climb in so she could mate with the bull. And thus, the Minotaur was created. Pasiphae did her best to nurse and raise the Minotaur as a babe, but he grew too fast and became unruly. Minos consulted the oracle at Delphi on what to do, and as a result commissioned Daedalus to construct a gigantic labyrinth to house the Minotaur under the palace in Knossos.”
“Years go by, and one of Minos’ sons is killed by the Athenians, who I guess were jealous of a string of recent victories by the king. From here, there are a few versions on why Athens begins sending youths as tribute, but the most common is that Minos waged and won a war to avenge the death of his son. As the losers, Minos required the Athenians to send seven youths and seven maidens to be sent every seventh year to cast into the labyrinth to be consumed by the Minotaur.”
“The third sacrifice came around and the hero Theseus,” Nikolai started, contempt clear in his voice, “volunteered to go as a sacrifice to Crete to slay the Minotaur. He told his father, Aegeus, that he would put up a white sail when he came back home if he was successful, but would have the crew put up black sails if he was killed by the Minotaur. Once he was in Crete, Minos' daughter Ariadne fell head over heels for Theseus and helped him navigate the labyrinth. In most versions of the story, she gave him a ball of string so he could retrace his steps and a sword to slay the beast. Story goes that he killed the Minotaur and led the Athenians out of the labyrinth, sailing away with them and Ariadne away from Crete.”
“I’m gathering that you’re not a Theseus fan,” you said, eyes still trained on Nikolai’s face. “Why?”
“A number of reasons.” Nikolai paused, clearly deciding on how much he wanted to nerd out. “One being that on the way back to Athens, Theseus abandoned Ariadne on the island of Naxos. He forgot, however, to put up the white sail like he told his father he would. Aegeus saw the black-sailed ship approach and threw himself into the sea, presuming Theseus was dead. But doing so just secured the throne for Theseus. The other being that he murdered the Minotaur.”
“But didn’t the Minotaur kill a bunch of kids?”
“Or was he fed children after being abandoned by his mother, unaware of any other way to live? I don’t subscribe to the idea that the Minotaur is a monster. There’s also quite a bit of evidence that suggests Ariadne saw him as a brother, having to make the impossible choice of her ‘abomination’ of a brother and a man who had convinced her he was in love with her.” Nikolai spoke with such passion and knowledge that it made your stomach tighten. This was a Nikolai not many got to see, a Nikolai you wanted to hold and kiss and laugh with. Fuck, you were in so far over your head.
He’d never been more attractive to you than in that moment. The light from the TV dancing on his perfect cheekbones, his hazel eyes dark as he spoke. “I don’t know. I have a soft spot for him. I feel like the Minotaur got a raw deal.”
“Well, you’ve made me a believer,” you smiled and the way Nickolai beamed back at you made the heat rise in your chest.
“You should stay here tonight.”
“Nik,” you sighed, rolling off him. “You know I can’t do that.” He had no idea how badly you wanted to just scream out ‘yes’.
“I know, I know,” he conceded, staring straight up at the ceiling. “Really wish you could, though.”
“Someday.”
“Is that a promise?” he asked with an arched eyebrow.
“I’m not the oracle at Delphi,” you said over your shoulder, making him snort. “I can’t tell the future.”
