hi everyone, there's been a lot of false information and missing information going around regarding the lucas situation. in this post, i'm going to be summarizing and translating the accusations against him. this isn't to assign blame or to say if the accusations are truthful or not, but i see a lot of people with inaccurate information

there were three girls who came out with statements against him. details on each under the cut:

op 1, korean, posted on twitter 8/23

this was the account that was swiftly debunked. if you see any posts with a photoshopped plane selfie, edited bubble voice messages, hotel dates that don't line up, or a picture of lucas's trinity ring, this is what those are referring to

summary: op said that after they broke up, lucas would ask her to buy him cigarettes and designer gifts as well as rent hotel rooms for him. she also claims that he gaslit her and cheated on her

op 2, chinese, posted on weibo 8/24, this isn't a direct translation of the entire post and chat conversations, but rather some highlights

she was a fan since summer of 2019. she first met him on december 2nd, 2019 at a beijing fansign. she left her weibo username in a letter to him and in the early hours of december 3rd (the night of the fansign), she got a DM from him

in this DM, he asked her to go to the hotel and meet up with him. at 3am, she went to the hotel room. he told OP that he gets a lot of letters, but only opened OP's and that he noticed her at previous fansigns and would keep the things she gave him.

she said it was her first time in this situation and he said it was also his first time

op asked him if he had DMed any other fans and he said there was only one other from china, but he didn't find them attractive so they only had a meal together

they hooked up, then he told her not to tell anybody and to delete the chat messages. he suggested that they could meet up again, but not to come to the airport because he's tired at the airport and never thinks the fans that meet him at the airport are attractive

OP went to a bangkok fansign but they didn't meet up. they did call each other, and lucas said that he had a bad predebut relationship so even though he liked OP, he didn't want to talk about being in a relationship

the next time was at a shenyang fansign, OP couldn't visit him because she was sick in her hotel room with a fever, but her friend said that he was contacting another chinese fan. after the event, he came to find her

(tw - unprotected sex) that time, they had unprotected sex. she asked him to put on a condom, but he refused to. he said that he hadn't had sex in almost a year. she asked him about the other chinese fan he contacted and he said that this was the fan from before that he had a meal with but didn't find attractive. he was scared that the company would find out and smoked an entire pack of cigarettes in 2 hours

(tw - mention of kris wu) he also told OP that as a trainee he'd go out and party a lot, but he thought people like kris wu were silly and were just in the company to play and never trained.

he said on his show in korea where he pretended to be a soldier, he felt it was too tiring and pretended to have back pain to leave the filming sooner. he complained that chinese variety shows edited him to make him look dumb, so kept hesitating to join the next season.

before leaving to go overseas in feb 2020, he asked OP to just be friends, which she later found out to be his usual excuse.

if not for the first OP, she would have totally believed everything he told her, but now she realizes that she was played a fool

OP originally didn't want to come out with this, but after yesterday's posts, realized that she wasn't alone in her experiences with him and other girls had gone through the same things

he would badmouth and make up rumors about other girls just to appease the girl he's with

they first met at his schedule when she airdropped him a reaction image for fun.

he said he wanted to meet up somewhere alone with her. she asked if he had a girlfriend and he said no. she went to pick him up at his hotel and took him back to her house. the first thing he did was start smoking and then drinking.

lucas said that his best friend from trainee days was useless and that his group members don't listen to instructions, don't try hard, and don't practice. he said that one member stole a (modeling/fashion) opportunity from under his nose and that some people don't have any talent but still debut because of their face. he said he didn't like filming Keep Running because his industry seniors gave him a lot of pressure

he also started talking about his family's economic status and that his dad's investments failed. OP thought he was hardworking at first, but then realized that he was just making her feel sorry for him to pick her up

they would frequently see each other at her place, then she would call a car to send him back before his schedule the next morning

he would claim that he didn't bring enough clothes and tell OP to buy clothes for him and bring it to him. he always asked for saint laurent or balenciaga and that he didn't like burberry (the brand that he's an ambassador for)

afterwards, he would make up excuses not to meet. at the time she thought he was worried for her studies but now she realizes that he was actually seeing other people

he would ask if she had her own house and if she lived alone, etc. after confirming that she had a roommate, he stopped responding to her messages

in december, he used the excuse of being too busy as well as saying that they're friends and using that friendship to convince her not to expose anything when his group member was exposed to be contacting fans (t/n: i don't know what she's referring to here)

during the time they were meeting up, she repeatedly asked him if he had a girlfriend or was in contact with other girls. he always said no. he also claimed he never drank with another girl. at the time, she was naive and believed him, thinking that he was just looking for love. she didn't think that he would use his celebrity status and his fans' affection to fulfill his own needs, deceive others, flirting with others when he had a girlfriend

@didilydee I really appreciate you critically considering my discussion points and showing an interest in not spreading misinformation! OP blocked me so my post debunking their’s wouldn’t show up in their notes where other people could see it being criticized and to ensure I couldn’t respond to their reblog directly so it would look like I failed to offer a counter argument in order to give the illusion of them being in the right since it would apparently be too much of an effort for them to engage in an actual discussion where their claims could potentially be debunked. I used this particular article because it was a convenient compilation of facts from various certified legal sources that’s geared towards relaying those facts— not unsourced gossip. It contains links and references to the court documents and other certified sources within the article and the judge is not the sole source within each point that relays facts— not opinions. Therefore, it’s not clickbait unless you consider summaries of legal documents and testimonies clickbait. If you see something specific that’s not a fact outside of the closing statement that includes the author’s opinion, you’re more than welcome to say so.

I didn’t spam every single person who reblogged it with tags— I only brought this to the attention of those who had posted their own comments implying they were open to a discussion given their willingness to reconsider things when presented with facts. Even then, I didn’t tag everyone who commented— only a handful of people. You act like I was making a callout post towards them when I said, “This isn’t a callout post of course I just wanted to bring this information to the attention of individuals I noticed were reblogging with comments. Dylan Farrow and Soon-Yi are often mixed up with each other so I can see how this might be confusing in that sense. You’re not obligated to reblog my fact-checks of course but please consider at least deleting OPs misleading post from your dash to prevent spreading misleading information”, which can be found in my reblog. If they want to say something, let them say it— you don’t have to put words in their mouth akin to how you’re putting words in mine given the unwarranted accusations you attempted to make throughout your post.

It’s very telling of you to claim people who make an effort to be informative when encountering misleading information are “loony” while also acting as though my request for others to consider information you refrained from relaying was a callout rather than a request. I generally refrain from making unwarranted accusations towards people I discuss things with, but given your reaction it’s evident I’m not the one with issues here, so don’t try to project your own problems onto people who consider things critically just because you expect them to believe you with ease and without question on a public platform given how that would be rather loony. Everyone else I’ve had a discussion with on this matter thus far have at least been receptive regardless of where they stand agenda-wise. However, your decision to block me so that my post debunking your own wouldn’t show up in the replies along with your decision to attack my rhetoric without giving me a chance to defend it or criticize your own is another story entirely.

Again, you clearly care more about pushing an agenda here through being selective about the facts you choose to relay rather than addressing the fact that you purposefully left out legal information that didn’t align with your own. Your comments about the #MeToo movement make that evident given how you didn’t address the fact that I said, “Both Woody Allen and Mia Farrow were horrible people and the abuse they committed should not be politicized for the sake of pushing a feminist nor anti-feminist agenda.” You’ve become so obsessed with spewing misleading information to push your own agenda that you’d rather jump through obstacles than acknowledge that your cherry-picking argument is based off of that very agenda rather than the facts that overshadow your personal bias.

It’s interesting that you said, “the words of the person known to have abused and manipulated”, in regard to Moses given how this is known because of his and his siblings allegations that didn’t result in Mia being imprisoned yet you still obviously believe these allegations— as people should given the evidence despite Mia trying to dispute as much. However, you’re dismissing the allegations of Dylan, her mother, three witnesses, and Woody’s therapist who saw him for inappropriate behavior towards Dylan before Woody was even caught cheating. Bringing attention to your hypocrisy isn’t idiotic but nice try.

It’s also odd but not unsurprising that you’re saying Moses should be trusted in regard to denying Dylan’s trauma since that evidently aligns with the agenda you’re trying to push here in favor of dismissing all the other witnesses and legal officials that conflicts with your argument— such as Dylan, Mia, the three witnesses whose timelines aligns with Dylan’s story, the judge, the state prosecutor, Woody’s therapist, Dylan’s pediatrician, investigating officers, and even the state attorney.

I want to reiterate what I said before: “I don’t doubt Moses Farrow was abused by Mia in the least, but the source also brings attention to how Dylan’s story aligns with [four] other peoples [accounts]— not just Mia’s. Moses likely wasn’t present during the assault [itself], so he can’t say she wasn’t assaulted anymore than Dylan can say he wasn’t abused.”

As for the New-Haven Sexual Abuse Clinic, if you actually bothered reading through the article’s legal sources, accounts, and testimonies then you’d know that the doctor who signed off on the legal report you’re referring to never actually met Dylan personally to make an in-person assessment, no psychologists or psychiatrists were assigned to her panel, the notes regarding her evaluation were destroyed, her confidentiality wasn’t respected, this institution welcomingly invited Woody to profess his innocence when they should have remained professionally unbiased, and the judge and state prosecutor deemed this claim as unacceptable given that.

As for your defense of how Woody being a pedophile and assaulting Dylan would have been irrational... yes— you’re right. That’s the point and yet you still missed it somehow. Pedophiles aren’t rational in the risks they take as pedophiles. Your rhetorical questions usually don’t bode well for defending people accused of pedophilia given how it relies on defending their character and the characters of pedophiles don’t have much worth defending since their judgements are skewered, impulsive, and dangerous.

As for inconsistencies, you fail to address the inconsistencies about Woody’s story changing and you honestly just dug a deeper hole for yourself in regard to the attic thing given how Woody’s story pertained to a police report in which he told them he’d never been in the attic before changing his story and saying he had gone up there before.

Oh, an on another note... demeaningly claiming that an issue as complex as this one is something people should “obvious[ly]” be able to make sense of in attempt to make people feel foolish for not unquestioningly agreeing with you is not a very good look at all. It’s dangerous to suggest people shouldn’t be critical of the concepts you push onto them.

I can quote things, too, but from multiple sources instead of just cherry picking ones that align with pushing a specific agenda.

Another babysitter told police and also swore in court that on that same day, she saw Allen with his head on Dylan’s lap facing her body, while Dylan sat on a couch “staring vacantly in the direction of a television set.” A French tutor for the family told police and testified that that day she found Dylan was not wearing underpants under her sundress. The first babysitter also testified she did not tell Farrow that Allen and Dylan had gone missing until after Dylan made her statements.

The state attorney, Maco, said publicly he did have probable cause to press charges against Allen but declined, due to the fragility of the “child victim.”

I did this post yesterday and then deleted it because the OP made me feel sorry for her.  Luckily for me, someone reblogged it and my momentary stupidity is now remedied.  This whole scenario makes me smirk.

Doll face found @dean-supernatural-akf ranting in the main tags, including the Jensen tag, which is why she forwarded this biased drivel to me.  Thanks sweetie.  I scrolled though OPs blog, trying to figure this person out, because she ships wincest and destiel, apparently.  And she hates the haters.  It is convenient and dismissive to label those who don’t agree with you, don’t you think?  Label them rather than proving them wrong conclusively, because that would be difficult and you might lose the argument because of a lack of intelligence.  So call them names and be done with it.  Her rant is in italics, and my rebuttal in bold.

Listen… I love JENSEN and i love JARED. And yes i love MISHA too.

But i don’t follow him around like a dog, i don’t kiss the ground where hes walking on.

AND i also don’t do this with J2.

Why is it that when there is an entire blog dedicated to hate for Jensen or Jared, there is no bleeding heart rant like this about that blogger?  But if you write a blog about all the mean things Misha and his fans do, you are a “horrible human being” with “toxicity and hate in your heart”.  No, I would prefer to call it discernment.  I wont like someone just because “it SPNFamily darn it, haters don’t belong”.  So if Misha gives me consistent reasons to hate him, I am still not allowed to hate him because I will be ejected from SPNFamily?  What is this?  A communist fanbase?  Nobody is allowed to have their own opinions?  Everybody must think the same way and feel the same fairytale happy feelings?  Which dandelion world did you pop up from?

I fight for all of them, i fight against the hate that all of those three get and Misha gets more hate then J2 and thats a fact.

The way you support J2 is the same way that Misha’s people support him.

Actually no, J2 fans don’t get angry when Misha is interviewed for Elle magazine, yelling “where’s J2”.  They don’t ask “Whose line is it,anyway?” why they excluded J2.  They don’t threaten to burn Misha alive in his house for being anti-destiel and/or making a joke about Jensen.  That happened with Jensen.  I have the receipts.  The same group were discussing kidnapping Jared’s kids.  That group was made up of 3500 people.  So many haters slipped up your radar?  Well, now you know.

Dealing with the entire subject of hate, in the most abstract manner, without any analysis into your darling actor’s bad behavior and without taking into account the nasty behavior of his fandom, shows that high school is all you know.  Hopefully, one day you will grow up and think on broader terms. 

Cyberbullying is a serious subject, and thats exactly what you do with Hate Blogs and Hate tweets and Hate comments.

Keep using the word “hate”.  It will abrogate all the legitimate anger that the J2 fans have against Misha and his hellerminions.  Hellers are the biggest cyberbullies in fandom.  They sent hate directly to J2.  Some of the things they write will shock a person who has a real disdain to hate, not a daffodil like you who thinks Misha is infallible and doesn’t deserve an anti tag.  One said that she couldn’t wait for Jared to die.  And she tweeted that directly to Jared, along with a praying emoji.  Oh, you don’t know about that?  Well, then I guess you are not an authority on who is SPNFamily and who is not, now are you? 

You want to be a bully ? You love spreading hate ?

Don’t reply to this?  Then why put it in the main tags, as well as inappropriate tags, and still hope that nobody disagree with you.  Aren’t we childish? 

What happened after the post was put up:

She DM's me and says that she has since changed her mind because she did another post about the hate that J2 get, and if I could please remove my post, because she was suffering panic attacks over it.  I said I would, but she is going to remove the above misleading post and provide me with proof that Misha gets death threats.  Caught between a rock and a hard place, she said that she came across the death threats on two blogs, that had blocked her for some mysterious reason, which is why she couldn't screenshot the evidence.  I found what those reasons were, when I went to those blogs:

I searched through their blogs, and found nothing.  No death threats.  They just point out the truth about Misha.  That is it.  She accused them for nothing.  Of course, that didn't occur to me until today, because I still felt concerned for her because the poor kid was suffering panic attacks.  So I deleted the post.  Today I find this message from her:

''So i asked like 10 different people Misha stans and Misha haters about those things you said he did. Nobody has ever heard of it, no one. You are telling your lies man, i aint stopping ya. But you are a horrible person if you need to attack a 19 year old on the Internet and 'Call me out' just because it gives you a kick. And just because you disagreed. My post will stay deleted because it wasnt up to Date anymore, but it wont be my last one. People like you need to be stopped, people like you are the reason why this fandom sucks so hard. Bye Bye. The user denies reposting any gifs except for two gif sets (11/05/17). They had deactivated their old account to take on a new identity as “K” with @afternoon-tae​ (at the moment abandoned). It is unclear whether they will no longer repost.

Originally you can look at some of their reposted gifs through their BTS gif tag #jgifs and self-reblog tag #sr. A network that Jey used to be a member of is gracious enough to maintain their partial archive of her gifs here. If you see your work was reposted in the archive, report misattribution through this form to remove all reblogs of the post. If you see your work was reposted on their new accounts, contact @nochuyou​ or @afternoon-tae​ or report misattribution.

Below the cut is the evidence we gathered to reach our decision:

I, admin Tiffany N., was in contact with the user, Jey, since Monday, October 30th, when I responded publicly to this reposting report submitted to us by an anon. I talked to her for an hour and a half that day then on and off until Thursday. During that time she has repeatedly asserted that she did not edit anyone’s gifs.

On Thursday she confessed to editing nochuie’s, but only nochuie’s. On Sunday, when I revealed to her some of the evidence included here she claims she only reposted the 2 gif sets. I was aware at minimum there were 4 accused gif sets, which were posted by the original creators between October 15th and 16th, because an anon provided nochuie three sets of links to OP’s and Jey’s for comparison. The anon’s comparisons proved to be accurate for the 2 we were able to find.

I want to make clear that I gave many chances for Jey to confess over the week and that she had agreed multiple times over to the consequences I outlined (including this report post) if her promises continued to be false.

You can view her Thursday confession and agreement to btsgfx’ conditions and consequences here. I have marked where some conversation was omitted with yellow scissors. Below is a snippet:

11/07 Edit: You can also read my entire chat log with Jey here. For brief highlights click here instead. Below are the last messages we exchanged and her public apology she posted 30 minutes after. Angela (nochuie) also felt compelled to upload her chat log here.

11/10 Edit: We were notified that Jey has at the moment abandoned @afternoon-tae following our updated report (11/08) for @nochuyou, which her abandoned blog follows (among more defining tip-offs we will not reveal here). We were also able to identify another reposted gif set from perusing past networks Jey was believed to be a member of and from her mutuals’ archives. On @lgbtqbangtan-net​, that Jey is currently a founding admin at, all her works under #cr: jeylovestoblog have been deleted.

Since Jey deleted the accused original gif sets (as she claims was asked of her even though most of the gif makers we contacted never saw the accused gifs), we thought that we could not get a copy to compare to the original gif makers’ works. I was notified though that Jey forgot to delete her self-reblogs of them in her #sr tag (now deactivated). We could not find posts for all the accused gif sets still.

In the below gifs we overlaid Jey’s gifs on top of jjks’ (1, 2) and nochuie’s original gif.

Above the gifs match exactly frame by frame with the same number of frames and pixel content/sizing. nochuie has noted that for this gif set she even manually deinterlaced the 60fps video file. The reposts are also cropped smaller than the original. The bottom one Jey sent to me and claimed it was the original one she posted and was accused of copying. It was not, but it was also a copy.

I spent the first 2 months of 2020 setting up a blogging business. It was the third time that I started building a blog and it was the first time I had any success. The first two times I just gave up. The first time I wasn’t even able to get past the theme setup in WordPress. For a little perspective on the value of the co-op, I paid over $1,000 for a training course on setting up a blogging business as well as another $375 for a training course on using Pinterest for advertising my blog. There were no free services offered in these programs, only training. While I am happy with the training I received from both courses, if I could go back I would prefer to have spent that money on PIP and the co-op. 

Some might feel the promotion of the co-op throughout the training modules is too frequent, however I don’t. First of all, I think there is real value in the co-op service and second how can I possibly be annoyed by someone promoting their own product when they have already provided me with so much value for free?

My Results

I’ve been working with my Plug-in Profit site for about 2 ½ weeks now. 

I signed up to promote all five programs, purchased a Gold traffic plan, ran one solo ad for 100 clicks and have been posting on Facebook (business page and business advertising groups) fairly consistently. 

I have not yet used the email mailer services Stone talks about in the training. I’ve been posting my own articles to the blog every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for two weeks. I installed the SNAP plugin and am auto posting my blog posts to four other sites. I also email a link to my subscribers after every post.

I’ve added 202 subscribers to my email list. 

I have 1 trial member sign up for Global Domains International. The trial ends tomorrow and I will make $16 in monthly commissions if the member continues with GDI with my premium membership.

I’ve made $10 in commissions on Traffic Authority and if the member continues their membership I will make that monthly plus a commission on any traffic they purchase.

I have 2 people who have signed up as interested in Now Lifestyle, but no purchase or membership yet.

I have 2 people who have signed up as interested in Now Online Sales Pro, but no purchase or membership yet.

I have received 6 PSA signups at SFI that came directly through the PIP advertising.

Surprisingly to me no one has signed up for the free PIP website yet.

One Issue

I’ve only run into one issue so far with PIP and that was caused by my own ignorance. I used a domain that was previously pointed to another site with email setup through G Suite. When I changed the name servers to point to PIP, I lost access to the MX records at my domain registrar site. This essentially deleted my email address for that domain. 

My YouTube account was set up using that email address and I had some autoresponder emails attached to that email address too. This means I can no longer access my YouTube Channel. I’ve tried contacting G Suite support, and my domain registrar support and I am still trying to sort out my options. So far I’m either not getting good information or I’m just out of luck.

Caveat Emptor: It may be best if you use a domain name that doesn’t have a working email address tied to it when you request your free PIP website. 

PIP understandably doesn’t provide email support. It appears that I may have to either hire someone with expertise in this area or give up the email address and recreate my YouTube channel…none of the Google email recovery options have worked. With my other sites that are hosted in one place with the domain registered elsewhere I had to make changes to the mx records at the hosting site. PIP is privately hosted so this is not an option.

Final Thoughts

I have tried many online business programs and have spent too much money on systems that promised the moon, but delivered very little of what they promised. I am extremely impressed with the value of all the free setup provided by Plug-in-Profit. I highly recommend this system to anyone who is serious about wanting to build a real online business that can provide them with residual income for years to come.

Even though much is already set up for you and you can automate a lot of the work with this program, you will still need to work hard if you want to grow your business. Don’t forget, there is no such thing as get rich quick! PIP is like getting a business in a box – all you have to do is put in the daily work, market it and watch your business grow.

What We've Learned from Moving to Signed Cookies

We've recently moved Coggle's login sessions from a database-storage model to signed cookies, where session data is stored the session cookie itself.

There aren't many real-world examples of how to handle this migration, so we're sharing what we've learned doing this with node and express, and hopefully it'll be a useful and interesting read!

Part 1: How Old Sessions Worked

Previously we handled sessions with the express-session module and connect-mongo data store, and then we used passport to load our actual user data based on the session. Our middleware setup looked like this:

For each request that included a session cookie, the process was basically:

Check the connect-mongo sessions collection in the database to see if the cookie is valid

If it's valid, load the session data (the user ID and anti-CSRF token) from the sessions collection

Passport middleware loads req.user based on the user ID

Our actual app logic runs

Finally, if the session is updated (for example the cookie expiry is extended), re-save the session to the database. (express-session does this when the response is sent by hooking the response object)

The corresponding data for every single session cookie that hadn't expired had to be saved in the database. This added up to a lot of session records!

Before the migration sessions were the biggest cause of writes to our database, a significant source of reads, and the majority of data we actually stored in our main database (The actual content of Coggle diagrams is stored separately). Our goal with moving to signed sessions is to significantly reduce the resources needed to host this.

Part of the reason for the volume of session data is that we have very long-lived session cookies, as we prioritise people being able to easily return to their Coggle diagrams. People forgetting which email address they used to log in and 'losing' their diagrams as a result is our biggest source of support requests.

Part 2: Choosing a Signed Cookie Implementation

An alternative to storing sessions in the database is to instead store the session data in the cookie itself, so when each page is loaded the session data needed is immediately available in the cookies of the request. This is possible as long as there's a cryptographic signature on the cookie to stop it from being tampered with. Someone can't change their cookie to log in to someone elses account, as they have no way to forge the cryptographic signature.

There isn't a formal standard for signing cookies, but the most common approach is to store a second cookie alongside each cookie to be signed, with a .sig extension to the name. This is the approach used by the cookies npm module, and the cookie-session middleware wraps this module into a convenient middleware which initialises req.session if the session cookie's signature is valid.

We already use JSON Web Tokens in Coggle for authentication between our back-end services, so we also considered using JWTs as session cookie values. There would be a number of advantages/disadvantages to this:

Public-keys could be used for signing, enabling our back-end services to verify signatures without access to the private signing key

Cookie values could be easily encrypted, as well as signed, by using the related JWE standard.

The additional information that makes JWTs portable (key ID, issuer, and using public-key signatures) also makes them bigger

Public-key signatures are significantly more expensive to sign and verify.

There are no readily available open source node modules for JWT-based session cookies.

Since we don't need encryption and would prefer to use symmetric keys, we chose the cookie-session middleware. If you're considering the same route, then think carefully about whether all of the data stored in your session should be unencrypted.

Part 3: Implementation

Secure Configuration:

The default for cookie-session (inherited from the cookies module), is to use the SHA1-HMAC signing algorithm. SHA1 has some weaknesses, so to be cautious we use SHA256-HMAC instead by passing our own Keygrip instance when creating the session middleware:

Handling CSRF:

We set SameSite=Lax on our session cookies, so it would not normally be possible for code on other sites to send potentially state-changing POST requests with the session cookie. However, in case people are using old browsers which do not support SameSite, or there is a bug in browser's implementation, we still also use an anti-CSRF token for state changing requests.

Previously the CSRF token for each session was stored in the database, and the value sent with each request from the client compared against this - with signed cookies it's instead stored in the cookie itself.

As the session cookie is stored as a HTTPOnly cookie, it is not possible for a CSRF script to read the value, even though it exists on the client.

It might be possible for malicious javascript to overwrite the HTTPOnly cookie, but in that case the cookie signature would be invalid.

This CSRF protection set-up is definitely a compromise, but as Coggle isn't handling payments, we think it's reasonable.

Migrating Old Sessions

It's important to migrate existing sessions so we don't log out users - running both the express-session and cookie-session middleware simultaneously isn't possible, as they both hook req.session and the response object.

As a result, we had to extract the logic from express-session which actually reads and verifies cookies (the getcookie function), and manually check the connect-mongo store, which is relatively straightforward:

With this in place, the final middleware for migrating sessions is straightforward. The migration is only temporary - once all old sessions have expired, we'll be able to just use the new cookieSessionMiddleware directly instead.

After this, the passport middleware works exactly the same as before, loading req.user from session.passport.user

Part 4: The Results!

We deployed the new sessions around January 27th. Based on one week either side of that, we saw some dramatic differences:

Database update operations, and corresponding db journal data, were reduced by approximately 80%, from 0.4MB/s to 0.08MB/s

Database volume busy time (which previously limited our peak scaling), reduced from approximately 15% to approximately 3%. In theory we can now handle peaks of over 30x our normal traffic volume, instead of peaks of only 7x!

(The reduction in the read ops of two of the volumes is primarily because they were being used as syncing sources for our off-site replicas - less journal data means less to be read for syncing)

And finally, 311 GB of session data and corresponding indexes can eventually be dropped from our database (multiplied across replicas, that's over 1.5TB of disk space, or about $160/month)

Hopefully this has been an interesting read. If you thought we were crazy to store our sessions in MongoDB in the first place, well, we also used to store the entire contents of Coggle documents in a MongoDB database too... maybe we'll write about that next!
