Keepers of the Chaos (Chapter 2)

Summary: Tam, Linh, Keefe, Biana, and Fitz are part of the tiny fandom for Keeper of the Chaos, and Tam and Linh's podcast convinces some of their other friends to watch it as well. The group finds themselves strangely invested in this show, where students at Tumblr High School who work together to write about an elf named Sophia, cause incomprehensible chaos, and fight their rival Pinterest High School.

Sophie rolls her eyes as she opens the link her girlfriend sent her and puts in her earbuds. Biana has been incessantly pestering her to watch Keepers of the Chaos for so long that Sophie half wants to watch it just to shut her up, but she's always tired, or busy, and she doesn't really like watching new things. Still, Biana asked her very nicely to listen to this one podcast, and she looked very pretty when she asked, so Sophie's dumb omni ass couldn't refuse.

"Welcome to the Twins of the Chaos podcast," it begins after loading for an obnoxiously long time. The girl speaking has a pretty voice, Sophie has to admit- sweet and melodic and vaguely amused.

Maybe listening to this podcast won't be so bad if she can listen to that girl's voice the whole time.

But another person speaks, adding "Where some chaotic twins discuss our favorite show, Keepers of the Chaos," and his voice is not as pretty. She continues listening anyway, since Biana may or may not murder her if she stops.

The two voices- whose names are Linh and Tam, apparently- start talking about Keepers of the Chaos some more, giving Sophie a summary she's heard tons of times from Biana and Fitz- though the twins explain it slightly more coherently and with less... whatever the verbal equivalent of keyboard smashing is. Biana usually starts rambling about her favorite characters, like Lynn- not "Lynn the fandom mom," but the other Lynn- and Avery, or sometimes Nora and Darwin. Sophie doesn't understand any of those names and loses track of the conversation as soon as it involves too many unfamiliar names.

But Tam and Linh are making more sense, at least for the most part, until they start mentioning specific couples. The conversation gets again comprehensive soon enough, though, and Sophie does smile at the name "The Dark Duck."

By the end, when Tam says "half of them wearing sleeping masks with teal eyes painted on and the other half watching the chaos with mild amusement," Sophie is curious enough to be mildly intrigued. She listens to their outro music, and before she can regret it, types out a text message to Biana.

Sophie: fine

Sophie: ill watch it

Biana responds instantly with an array of heart emojis. Sophie blushes.

Biana: can i come over and watch with u?

Sophie: ok!

Sophie: moms making mallowmelt

Sophie: but u cant have any

Biana: >:(

Biana: hope u like being single then

Sophie: fine u can have some mallowmelt

Biana: yayyyy!

Biana: ily

Sophie: ilyt

Sophie: now lets watch ur stupid show

Biana: on my way!!!

Sophie smiles, shaking her head. She's a little annoyed, but fine, it sounds interesting enough from the podcast. And what else would she be doing? Studying? Having US history as an alternative would make even the most horrible of shows seem good. She stuffs her textbooks into her backpack and shoves some things out of the way so her room looks a bit neater before rushing downstairs. The mallowmelt smells good enough to make her mouth water.

"Mmm..." she sighs, barely taking time to let it cool off before taking a large bite. "That's so good. Thanks, Mom."

Edaline smiles. "You're welcome. Just save some for your father and I."

"Fine, fine. I have to share with Biana, anyway." Sophie huffs and takes another bite. "She's coming over, is that alright? We're going to watch a show together."

"Sure, just make sure to get your homework done."

Sophie rolls her eyes. "Fine."

"And keep the door open!" Grady calls. Edaline laughs as Sophie's face flames.

"I'm going back to my room," she grumbles, taking a plate of mallowmelt with her and walking up the stairs. She manages not to trip over her own feet and drop the mallowmelt, thankfully, as she grabs her laptop and opens Netflix. Sighing, she searches for Keepers of the Chaos and clicks on the show that comes up before waiting for Biana to arrive.

The doorbell rings soon, and Sophie carefully sets down her laptop and her plate on her bed before rushing down the stairs. Panting slightly, she opens the door for her girlfriend. Biana's wearing a t-shirt with the Amsterdam flag on it. Sophie has no idea why. Maybe Biana likes the country? Her girlfriend is pretty weird. "Come on in," she says, realizing she's been staring. In her defense, Biana is pretty and Sophie is very omni.

"Ready to go watch Keepers of the Chaos?" Biana asks. She bounces on her toes slightly.

"Alright," says Sophie. "I set it up on my laptop in my room."

"Awesome! You'll love it."

Sophie follows Biana up the stairs and into her room. They sit on the bed together, Sophie leaning against the wall and Biana leaning against Sophie, and Biana presses play. Somber kazoos begin playing in the background as the theme song starts.

We're on the edge of chaos

No one is straight

We're making fanart

Because L*ura we hate

And we're gonna have teal eyes in the end!

Biana dances a little along with the song, and Sophie can't help but smile. A curvy, round-faced person with short dark hair and colorful earrings plays a few notes on the piano, and then a KEEPERS OF THE CHAOS logo flashes across the screen. Then, a group of students sit in a classroom.

"Shai! Tater! Lynn! You three finally got together?" says the same person who just played piano, gesturing to a redhaed wearing a Sappho lesbian flag cape. She's holding the fingerless-gloved hand of a lanky person with brightly colored hair, and they're holding hands with a tall girl who has chin length brown hair. The rest of the class applauds the fiancees before returning to their own conversations.

"Yep! Thanks, Ink," says Tater.

Ink smiles at them and turns to a person with light brown skin and golden hoop earrings partially covered by long dark hair. "Hi, Kiri, how was your break?"

"Good! Here's to a good 2021?" Kiri turns to the person next to them. "How about you, Ref?"

Ref has short brown hair and red glasses. "Yeah, my break was dOPE," she says, leaving everyone to wonder how he did that with their voice. "oH, and happy belated Hanukkah to Shai!"

"Thanks, you too. And guess what! I didn't set my hair on fire this year!"

A short guy with strawberry blonde hair looks concerned. "Um. Congratulations?"

"Thanks, Sam!"

Sophie looks away from the screen and at Biana. "There are a lot of characters..." she mutters.

"Yeah, but you get to know them well enough eventually," says Biana. "Now shh, let's keep watching!"

A lot of other characters are introduced in various conversations, and Sophie's brain has a hard time keeping track of them all. She does remember Tara, a curvy, bored-looking girl with long sideswept bangs, and Blue, a bisexual who may or may not be an arsonist. She doesn't know either of their personalities very well yet, but she likes them so far. Lucat, a pale, blue haired asexual, who later joins the Hanukkah conversation, also seems cool.

Once quite a bit of introductions are done- Sophie lost count at around twenty something- are over, an announcement comes over the school's loudspeakers.

"Welcome back, Tumblr High School!" announces a voice. "I hope you all had a good break. Now, the Tumblr staff have an important announcement for you all. High schools in this county, like ours, Pinterest High School, and Instagram High School, will be holding a competition. All members of the winning team will receive a scholarship to AO3 college. If you are interested, meet in room 69 after school. Now, onto other announcements..."

Somber kazoos play again as the principal's droning voice fades into the background. A montage of the previously introduced characters wishing they could go to AO3 college moves across the screen. After a few minutes of them zooming through school and talking about how fucking boring it is, all of them gather in the room (some of them with more jokes than others) to discuss the competition.

A blonde woman welcomes them into the room. They wait a while to make sure no one else will arrive, but once everyone is there, the woman clears her throat. "Hello, everyone! I'm glad you're interested in joining the competition. My name is Shannon Messenger, and I'm in charge of admissions at AO3 College. My coworker L*ura and I designed this competition."

Sophie gasps and looks at Biana. "L*ura? But isn't that the person they hate? They said that in the intro!" Biana smiles at her, and she blushes as she realizes that she's kind of... maybe... invested in the show now. She decides she'll endure the "I told you so"s later and looks back at the show, trying to telepathically tell the characters not to trust this L*ura person... and perhaps not Shannon either. It's too early to tell whether Shannon will be an antagonist or not.

"All of you will be working as a team to write a story together. The main premise is that a twelve year old girl named Sophia is a telepath, but she can't tell anyone her secret. Then, she meets a teal-eyed boy named Finn, and he tells her that she's an elf. She travels back to the elf world with him, where she struggles a bit at the elf school Firefox, makes friends with some other elves, learns that she is an illegal creation of a rebel group called the Dark Duck, and another rebel group- the Rarelynoticed- tries to kidnap and kill Sophia and her friend Deck. There are other details to be included into the story, which will be given out to the participants as a packet. The object of this competition is not to determine your ability at coming up with story ideas, but your ability to work in groups and execute well developed ideas. Does anyone have any questions?"

Someone raises their hand- a short, tanned girl. "Lynn?" prompts the principal.

"Did you say the rebel group was named the Dark Duck?"

"And the Rarelynoticed?" adds another person, with rectangular glasses and a red bracelet.

"Raise your hand before speaking, Auran," scolds the principal. "But yes, those are the names."

"Alright then," Auran mutters.

"Unless anyone else has questions, we'll be sending out sign up forms for everyone interested, and then we will distribute the information packets about your story. You can talk to each other and start planning."

No one else has questions, so once they've all filled out the sign up form, they gather in small groups and flip through the packets, making sarcastic comments or mocking names ("'Rarelynoticed' though-" a stylish hijabi named Raiin sighs as they come across a page of information about the group) as they try to form some semblance of a plan. Once they all agree that they've made a lot of progress, they make plans to meet up again soon and walk back home.

Unbeknownst to them, a pair of ominous teal eyes watch from above.

Somber kazoos play once again, and the credits roll.

"So, what'd you think?" Biana asks as Sophie closes her laptop.

Rather inaudibly, Sophie mumbles "It was good."

"What was that?"

"It was good! I liked it!"

Biana grins. "I told you so." She leans over and kisses Sophie on the cheek. "Thanks for watching it. I have to go do some homework, awesome seeing you!" As she walks out, Sophie hears her singing under her breath. "We must be gay..."

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard that if we don’t stand by Israel, the victims of the Nazi Judeocide will have died in vain. I knew something was wrong with that claim, but for the longest time I couldn’t put my finger on it. Now I think I can.

The claim is peculiar right off the bat. How would backing an Israeli regime that systematically and indiscriminately oppresses an entire non-European population in the 21st century possibly honor the victims of the Nazis, who were in power in Germany from 1933 to 1945? It makes no sense.

But that’s not all. To die in vain means to die in the futile pursuit of a cause that remains unfulfilled even posthumously. This can include suicide as well as death at the hands of murderers. But someone who is killed while simply living dies neither in vain nor (perhaps eventually) triumphantly. A “passive” murder victim just dies, no matter what the killer intended. (No disrespect whatever is intended by the word passive here. I mean the death was not in a cause pursued by the victim.) It’s a tragedy, but nothing more — as though that were not enough.

The victims of the Holocaust did not see themselves as dying for a cause and were not expecting their deaths to accomplish anything on their part. They certainly did not think of themselves as dying for the future establishment of a chauvinist Jewish state in Palestine, although a small number might have been Zionists.

They died merely because their Nazi killers viewed them in a particular way. Indeed, most German Jews were surprised at being regarded as Jews rather than as Germans. In Nazi Germany one did not have to be a believing and practicing Jew to be targeted because the anti-Semites subscribed to the once-a-Jew-forever-a-Jew philosophy; having a Jewish mother was enough. (The philosopher Spinoza, who was excommunicated by the Jewish community of Amsterdam in 1656, would have been branded a Jew, although he rejected religion and changed his first name from the Hebrew Baruch to the Latin Benedictus.)

I note that today’s Jewish nationalists, that is, Zionists, take the same essentialist position. In their eyes (and unfortunately in the eyes of many non-Jews), one can never stop being a Jew. For them, Judaism is not a matter of religion but of blood. (They too regard Spinoza as a Jew.)

This is utter rubbish: there is no Jewish gene, despite the shameful Israeli search. Moreover, Jews do not constitute a single distinct ethnic group: Jews are found among many ethnic, racial, and national groups. There is no universal Jewish language, food, theater, music, etc. — that is, no worldwide secular Jewish culture. The dominant culture in Israel is not Jewish; it’s Israeli. Judaism represents a worldwide religious community with common beliefs and rites. Why isn’t that enough? (See Shlomo Sand’s How I Stopped Being a Jew, which eloquently defends a position I wish to associate myself with.)

So here we are: no matter what I and others do, the victims of the Holocaust cannot have died in vain or not died in vain. People who talk in such terms commit a category mistake.

I could leave the matter there, but I can take this a step further. While nothing we can do will determine whether the Jewish victims of the Nazis died or did not die in vain, all of us — Jew and non-Jew — can work to guarantee that the Nazis_ killed in vain_. That’s what we should want for any homicidal and tyrannical regime. The best thing to be said about a despot is that he lived in vain.

Now the question is: how can we best guarantee that the Nazis killed in vain? Jewish nationalists (including the ill-defined secularists among them) would give the same answer to other Jews as before: embrace Jewish identify, with Israel, the self-described “nation-state of the Jewish People [everywhere],” at the center of that identity.

I say that’s not a good answer. For one thing, as Shlomo Sand writes, to the extent that Jews and non-Jews embrace an ethnic/racial/genetic notion of “the Jewish People,” the Nazis are awarded a major ideological goal — and that would mean their killing was not entirely in vain. I want no part of it.

For another, a Jewish national identity necessarily comes at the expense of millions of Palestinian Arab Muslims, Christians, and secularists, who are thrown a few crumbs but have no real rights in Israel itself and have even less than that in the apartheid occupied West Bank and the concentration camp — some Israelis use that term — known as the Gaza Strip.

A far more promising way to make sure the Nazis killed in vain is to work overtime for individual freedom and toleration in all spheres, which means minimal — zero would be better — political power. That is: embrace radical liberalism, otherwise known as the libertarian philosophy, to combat oppression and bigotry. How many Jews could Hitler have killed had he remained a failed artist and paperhanger in Austria because no state was available? None, I’d guess: the creep probably would have had the crap kicked out of him on his first try. Power is poison, and we must work to eliminate it — and the myth-based nationalism that it fuels — in favor of voluntary peaceful social cooperation.

Once we see things that way, we will be equally appalled by all genocides and lesser forms of oppression. (One, of course, is especially horrified by the sheer scale and methodical nature of the Nazi killing machine, but that should be true no matter the victimized group.) No special consideration can be accorded to Jewish tragedies — no “hierarchies of suffering,” to use Haaretz writer Amira Hess’s phrase, can be accepted — without preventing the Nazis from having killed in vain.

With all its splendid ethnic, cultural, and individual variations, the human race is one people with one proper code of justice for all. Invidious divisions undermine justice, liberty, peace, and cooperation by fragmenting and weakening the oppressed before their oppressors.

Next match is a rematch from our last PPV Time to Pay with the incredible fan favorite @GarthWLane against @BrianKWithers

Next match is going to be a good one as the returning @HotstuffINT007 goes up against @IAPT38 both men come out to a huge pop, bell rings and Hot Stuff offers a handshake and believe it or not AJ excepts, collar and elbow tie up followed by a multiple reverses and ending with a stand off with the virtual crowd going crazy, neither man giving an inch, finally it’s AJ with an advantage as he delivers a beautiful drop kick sending Hot Stuff to the outside, AJ holds the ropes to bring Hot Stuff in but when he comes AJ cheap shots Hot Stuff, AJ controls most of the match and is going for his Phenomenal elbow but Hot Stuff nips up and delivers a back elbow followed by a pile driver, 1,2 kick out by AJ, Hot Stuff sends AJ to the corner sits him up top looks like he is going for a superplex but AJ counters with a head butt and what is this a Styles Clash from the top!!!! You gotta be kidding me 1,2 and my god Hot Stuff kicks out, how in the world did he kick out? AJ pleading with the ref and tells the crowd it’s over, he picks him up going for another Styles Clash but Hot Stuff reverses and inside cradle 1,2,3 Hot Stuff gets the win and moves on to the semi finals, AJ can’t believe why just happened, Hot Stuff comes to and offers a handshake and AJ goes in for the hand but all of the sudden nails Hot Stuff with the Pele kick, Hot Stuff is out, medical attendants come and check on Hot Stuff and helps him to the back

You go back to the ring and the tables ladders and chairs are set up for the final encounter for the CBWA Woman’s Championship, @BogotaTJLee vs the champion @sisterabigail32 both women looking ready bell rings and Alexa storms at AJ but AJ moves and Alexa hits the ring post, AJ meets her outside grabs a chair and nails Alexa on the back a vicious shot, AJ clearly in control starts skipping around the ring grabs a table and sets it up, she then takes Alexa and sets her on the table goes to the top and comes down with double knees crashing through the table, Alexa looks to be out, AJ comes to and grabs a ladder and throws it in the ring, sets it up and starts climbing the ladder, all of a sudden the lights goes out and comes back in to Alexa on the other side of the ladder laughing at AJ, how the hell did she get there? She was just out outside after going through the table, AJ can’t believe it but pushes Alexa off the ladder and she goes through another table, AJ starts climbing up again and again the lights and again Alexa is on the other side of the ladder laughing, this is bizarre, AJ finally kicks Alexa in the head and she falls off the ladder on a pile of chairs and Alexa is laughing again as if she loves the pain, AJ is so close to the title and as she goes for the belt Alexa yells from the ground yelling LET HIM IN, lights go out again and come back on and this time is The Fiend @BrayWya29193609 and he puts the mandible claw on AJ as Alexa is laughing historical AJ is out and falls on a ladder on the outside, Alexa props up like something out the Exorcist and climbs the ladder and retrieves the belt, winner and still CBWA Woman’s champion @sisterabigail32

We go backstage with Kenny and he is with The Head of Creative John Schneider, John said it’s nice to see Kenny has been taking care of his herp, Kenny ask John what he is feeling like going into War Games, John said tonight will be a landmark history making might and War Games will be something the CBWA fans will never forget, @KingBogota interrupts John and calls him a KKK redneck and he can’t wait for War Games and throws water in John’s face, John goes after Kenny but it was a set up as Kenny’s boys were waiting and jumped John Schneider, Kenny then hits John in the knee and he immediately collapsed and grabbing his knee in agony, referees run in to stop the beating and EMT’s are called immediately, this does not look good for Hollywood Roblox

Foot and Bray seem to be out and The Underfaker can’t sit up all the way, John Schneider yells at The Miz and hands him a chair, Gibson with the approval both men go after Bolin and wait a minute what is this? The Miz just hit Gibson in the back with the chair, Schneider can’t believe it, he is trying to climb in the cage to save Gibson.

Schneider finally gets in the ring and has a sledgehammer Bolin Services and The Miz back off Schneider checks on Gibson and helps him up Foot and Bray and Underfaker are up, looks like Bolin and The Miz are in trouble now, but wait they all turn their attention to Gibson and Schneider laughs and says goodbye old yelled and Gibson with the Sledgehammer, what are we seeing? Bolin Services and Hollywood Roblox teaming up to destroy @TheEyeOfGibson?

And look Bolin and Schneider are hugging, this was a set up this was a swerve if I ever seen one, Schneider’s gets on the mic and tells Gibson to give up, Gibson being stubborn as he is tells Schneider to eat shit and die, Schneider then tells @BrayWya29193609 to hit a Sister Abigail on Gibson.

Schneider tells him again to quit and receives a finger, now Schneider tells Underfaker to Tombstone this sob and he delivers one hell of a tombstone, Gibson barley unconscious and bleeding still won’t quit and Schneider tells Foot to end this and he applies the Iron Claw to Gibson, ref finally comes to stop it after Gibson doesn’t respond, we leave Flashpoint with Schneider and Kenny hand in hand in victory and each a foot on a bloody unconscious @TheEyeOfGibson from what we see a huge stable among us, who is going to stop this super group?

What a final to mark the first ever World series event to offer equal prize money for the women and the men!

It was a meeting of the world No. 1 and world No. 2 and Nicol David retained her U.S. Open title with a thrilling five-game victory over Laura Massaro - eighty-four minutes of captivating play that could have been choreographed to say to to the men’s finalists “follow that if you can!”

For five games they traded blows, testing each other out with long, patient, well-crafted rallies, then one or the other would prize open an opportunity and pounce on it. Unforced errors were few and far between, the quality was unfailingly high and the tension palpable throughout.

Hardly a point between them in the first two games—Massaro gets first chance at game ball 10-9, David seizes her first chance to take it 13-11. At 9-all in the second David gets first shot, but Massaro takes the game 13-11 on her second game ball. (on her first at 11-10 to Massaro, David gets a let as she runs into her opponent’s knees, Massaro appeals hoping for a no let, video ref says ‘stroke to David!’).

Massaro holds on to a slender lead through the third to take the lead 11-7 but can’t capitalize on a 7-4 lead in the fourth as David takes five points in a row, forcing the decider at 11-8.

David leads early in the fifth, Massaro levels at 2-all, but David has the momentum now, and two rare errors from Laura’s racquet take it to 7-3. The end comes quickly—a winning boast for 10-5, then a ball driven into the deep that Laura can’t retrieve and Nicol, still the champion, leaps in delight.

“It feels fantastic, it means a lot to win that match and to win another U.S. Open title,” said David.

“It’s been such a journey this year. I knew Laura was playing well, and I would have to dig deep. When I was down in the fourth, she maybe stepped off it a little, I just knew I had to keep going and going to the last point.

“Liz [Irving] helped me such a lot, she gave me the confidence to go in there, to know I could do it, and she and the team in Amsterdam have been doing that for the last ten and a half years.

“This is such a fantastic event, all credit to US Squash, the sponsors and the venue, making the prize money equal is putting the women’s game where it deserves to be and we all look forward to coming back for the next ten years!”

Masterclass From Greg

What followed was a masterful performance from Gregory Gaultier as the French top seed added to his U.S. Open title of 2006 with a straight games win over Nick Matthew, the third seed and 2007 champion.

In yesterday’s semifinal with compatriot James Willstrop, Matthew was the one in charge, but tonight the boot was firmly on the other foot as Gaultier assumed early control and only on sporadic occasions could Matthew break free.

Gaultier took early leads in all three games—6-1, 4-1, 5-2—and only in the second did Matthew threaten to close the gap, but Gaultier always found a way to open it up again.

It was never as easy as that makes it sound of course—that second game took over 20 minutes to complete, and there were plenty of fiercely competitive rallies—but it truly was a masterclass from Gaultier – watch the video.

“It’s amazing,” said a delighted Gaultier. “The last time I won this was 2006 so to win it again here in this great venue is like a dream.

“I gave 500% today, I tried to play fast and use a lot of variation as he’s so strong in the middle of the court.

“For me it’s my fifth tournament in a row, Nick has only just started after five months off, so I have the matches in my legs—maybe that was the difference tonight. I’m sure he’ll come back strong, maybe we can have another match in the World Open final next week!

“The sponsors, the organization and the venue here are all fantastic, and they’re doing great things in helping to raise the women’s game too.”

Keepers Of The Chaos (3)

Summary: Tam, Linh, Dex, Keefe, Biana, and Fitz are part of the tiny fandom for Keeper of the Chaos, and Tam and Linh’s podcast convinces some of their other friends to watch it as well. The group finds themselves strangely invested in this show, where students at Tumblr High School who work together to write about an elf named Sophia, cause incomprehensible chaos, and fight their rival Pinterest High School.

Content warnings: Cursing, religion (Jewish Vackers), and Amsterdam (just in case, I know that was stressful for some people).

The life of an amateur meme maker on dumbles dot com was a strange one, that was for sure. After finishing xyr favorite show- Ze-Ra: Monaerchs of Powhir- for the third time, Dex had searched for another show to fill the void in xyr soul. Biana recommended this show called "Keepers of the Chaos" and described it to xem. Xe was doubtful at first, but after watching the first episode, xe was hooked.

Xe used to not have many friends at xyr school, so xe did what every neurodivergent queer teen would do- made an account on dumbles dot com. People seemed to like xem- or at least, they liked dizznee-plus's memes and edits of Ze-Ra characters. Even after Dex befriended xyr squish, Fitz, thons sister, Biana, and aer girlfriend, Sophie, xe continued making content on dumbles. Around that time, the Ze-Ra fandom started dying off, and xyr memes started getting fewer note

In a sudden, two am burst of inspiration, Dex made edits of some of xyr favorite characters, like Ref, Akki, and Rose, with their respective pride flags (all of them bi) over them, and captioned it "we must be gay." The post blew up, or at least, what could be considered blowing up in Keeper of the Chaos's tiny fandom, and that was how Dex found xyr calling as an amateur meme/edit maker for KOTC.

History had been repeating itself, with the KOTC fandom starting to die off, until it was revived by an announcement from creator Saturn Nolastname- a season two would be released soon. Frantically, Dex made a meme about season one episode two, with the car salesman meme. Xe edited "chaos keepers" onto the car salesman, "the rarelynoticed" on the car, and "this bad boy can fit so many stripper outfits into it."

That had been... an interesting episode, to say the least. The chaos keepers had been talking about the antagonists of "Sophie and the Dark Duck"- a rebel group called the Rarelynoticed. In the information packet they'd been given, it was confirmed that the Rarelynoticed wore black cloaks and armbands, but no other clothes had been mentioned. Somehow, the chaos keepers came to the conclusion that the Rarelynoticed really wore neon pink leotards and green stripper heels, then drew this idea.

Needless to say, the Tumblr staff did not let them write that into the book. Nor did Lynn, the unofficially chosen leader of the group. Unfortunately for her, this didn't stop the chaos keepers from drawing more of these- or the fandom from making a ton of memes. In addition to the car salesman meme, a post with Drake saying no to "wearing normal fucking villain outfits" and yes to "leotards and stripper heels" gained popularity within the small fandom.

Though nothing could match the absolute shock of seeing the Rarelynoticed stripper outfit for the first time, Dex decided to rewatch the episode anyway- it was funny to see the chaos keepers freak out, and maybe xe could get some good screen captures. The good Saturn Nolastname indulged xem, and xe captured an excellent scene of most of the chaos keepers either laughing or screaming at the Rarelynoticed stripper outfits, with Kimber- one of xyr favorites- sitting on the side, explaining to Juno and Kaitee why Bianca Cracker was bisexual.

Xe went over to dumbles, posted the picture, added an image description, and captioned it "Live photo of me not caring when my friends talk about sex/romance." Xe chuckled to xemself- this really was how it felt to be aroace. Xe tagged it as aromantic and asexual as well, since dumbles added flag colors. Smiling, xe went to go check xyr notifications.

Xyr jaw dropped when xe saw that @lordofthesnuggles- Fitzroy (Dex didn't know thons middle name) Vacker thonself had liked and reblogged all three of xyr memes, even adding compliments in the tags! Xe'd had a bit of a platonic crush on Fitz for... a really long time, but xe always felt too awkward to talk to thon, so it was nice to see that thon appreciated xyr humor.

Feeling energized- and excited to procrastinate on xyr math homework- Dex went to watch the next episode: Dark Duck Is Jewish Now. Being Jewish xemself, this was a really funny episode to xem.

Lynn had been writing a sort of spinoff- it would be called fanfiction, but it was for her own story- about some of the Dark Duck characters celebrating Christmas, and added a throwaway line about Bianca and Finn Cracker celebrating Hanukkah. Then, her fiance, Shai, had taken that idea and run with it, writing a list of ideas about what would happen if the Cracker family was Jewish. Hir friend Sam had jumped on the idea, and soon they had abandoned writing the actual Dark Duck in favor of writing a story about Jewish Dark Duck characters. Some of the other Jewish chaos keepers, like Ref and Cat, helped out.

To be honest, it kind of surprised Dex that no one had made a joke about the Jewish Crackers just being matzah, so xe supposed xe would have to be the first.

Xe posted that observation, quickly getting a like from Fitz- which made xem smile. After a few minutes, Dex posted another meme: Shai and Sam standing in front of a door with a sign that read "elves don't have religion," and them saying "This sign won't stop me, because I can't read!"

It was accurate.

While that episode was great for Jewish representation, and funny, the Banana Noir episode was just plain weird.

It focused less on the Dark Duck than most of the other episodes, and was more about the crazy interactions of the chaos keepers. The episode was named for Banana Noir, who was really Cat Noir, but in a banana suit. Banana Noir was the son of Mellie, who looked like a shark, and Nora, who had platonically married faer. The mothers tried to arrange a marriage between him and Akki, who loved the side characters of the Dark Duck series. However, Akki wanted to marry Amelia. After a lot of shit that basically no one understood, Banana Noir's attempts were thwarted, and Lynn officiated the wedding between Akki and Amelia.

Yeah, Dex had no idea what the fuck was going on either. Xe'd watched an episode of Twins of the Chaos and a youtube video by arsonpog analyzing the Banana Noir chronicles, as it had been dubbed by the chaos keepers, and both expert opinions seemed to agree that Saturn Nolastname and the rest of the writers had probably been on crack when they made that episode.

The next episode made slightly more sense, though it was a low bar. After taking a break from the "official" Dark Duck story, the chaos keepers began collectively writing a Cinderella story about the characters Sophia and Bianca. People weren't allowed to be queer in the official story, but the chaos keepers still wanted to have fun with their obviously gay characters.

Even to the viewers of the show, who only received secondhand information about the Dark Duck characters, knew there was no way any of them, let alone all of them, were allocishet. The exact identities weren't entirely clear- when Dex had made edits of the characters' official art and xyr headcanons for their pride flags, a few people had disagreed- but both the chaos keepers and the fandom knew that despite what Shannon said, Sophia and Bianca were in love, and their Cinderella story should have made it in to the official Dark Duck story.

While excerpts of the Cinderella story were quoted in the show, most of it was left unclear, so Biana had taken it upon aerself to write aer own version of it. Dex was expecting an update later that day, actually, or maybe the next. Ae wasn't always 100% reliable with aer update schedule. Still, Dex looked forward to when it eventually did come.

After the brief calmness from the Sophianca Cinderella episode, season one episode six, Amsterdam, exploded back into chaos. A few of the chaos keepers decided to discuss a fake scene in the book in which crazy shit went down, with the scene supposedly being located in Amsterdam. It had never been written and was never going to be, but everyone discussed it like it was real. Some of the highlights involved all the Dark Duck girls having swords (and the chaos keepers being gay for them), and a speedboat chase scene through the canals. Fitz had a popular theory that the chaos keepers would actually travel to Amsterdam in order to commemorate this crazy part of their lives. Almost as popular as that was a meme Dex made, with a man labeled "chaos keepers discussing amsterdam" and gesturing feverishly to a wall covered in papers and red string.

Of course, episode seven (Dark Duck Disney) was chaotic too. Everything was chaotic with this group, it was in the title. Shannon announced that the winning Dark Duck story would be adapted into a Disney movie. After past experience with terrible book to movie adaptations, the chaos keepers panicked. They panicked so much that it became major news within their school, which until then, had been largely ignoring the chaos keepers. Once the discussion about the movie settled down, they talked a lot about how in awe they were that their Dark Duck shenanigans were trending within the school.

But of course, none of that compared to the last episode of the season...

Dex changed xyr profile picture to include an ominous pair of teal eyes and sighed.

Summer Art Exhibition: Adele Juraža

Welcome to Tell-Tale's Summer Art Exhibition. Here, we present a diary of sorts, a both visual and written solo gallery by Adele Juraža. In her own words, the themes of her work vary from happiness, joy, love and lust to sadness, disappointment and longing. She's had two exhibitions called "Complex Conscience Vol.1 & Vol.2." The theme of her work, she writes, is the visualization of conscience with raw feelings and true emotions which can sometimes be very personal and intimate.

We were entranced by Adele's brilliant use of colour and symbolism. Scroll down to enjoy the brightest exhibition of the Summer.

AFFECTED LUST

This one is very personal. It's about a relationship between 2 people who can't be together because of other people. The connection was so strong that it became very painful to be apart but the friendships involved were way more important and long lasting than this intense fling would ever be. Although we might never find out if there was any future in it. It came to a point where it was between us being together and hurting others or saving long time friendship with not being together.

WE ARE REAL N°4

This is a series of 4 collages about fake people. At that time (and still from time to time), I came across so many people who didn't seem genuine. Everything about them seemed artificial and put on. As if there was a trend going on and you had to be part of it. It was very disturbing and bothered me a lot. It confused me that someone would think that by putting on this face, fake personality and mannerism, it will somehow improve their lives and push them forward. As in reality it does the opposite.

SMOOTH THEFT

I made this one after an internship in an advertising agency. I felt emotionally drained, nothing I did was good enough. They pushed me so hard that by the end of it, I lost all my confidence and questioned if I really want to do graphic design. I don't think I've ever felt like such a burden. It was a really intense experience but it taught me a lot and I'm a stronger person because of it.

CHOICES N°2

This one is about the opportunities in life. I made this before I moved to Edinburgh. It was a big transition time, I was living with my parents and planning to move to a different country completely on my own. I think I had about 4 different countries in mind so I did a research of all of the possibilities I could be doing in each of the places. Eventually I ended up going to UK to continue studies in Edinburgh. It's a series of 2 collages - Choices N°1 & N°2.

EXOTIC CONSCIOUSNESS

After a trip to Amsterdam I felt very inspired and fueled. This is what I created after returning home. This isn't about my experience of taking heavy drugs, I was the one on the outside, observing people traveling in their deepest thoughts and pulling out their demons. The beauty of self consciousness and seeing yourself from a different angle, the liberation of letting go, opening your mind to something new. There's a fine line between it becoming dangerous and being a life changing experience. It's in our control to stay in balance with it.

Adele Juraža is a visual artist currently studying Graphic Design at Edinburgh Napier University. Whilst being super interested in graphics, she's a passionate collage maker. Her work is inspired by everyday life, people's reactions and her own thoughts and emotions. She pays a lot of attention to detail and uses bold colours. Most of her work can be translated using symbolism. Every element in her artwork represents something and sends a message to the viewer.

Found Today: 2/18/2019

On President’s Day here in the US, featured is a mini over-seas report. Selected are two watches from upcoming UK based auctions as well as one from an Amsterdam based dealer.

Breitling Top Time ref. 810 ‘Mark 1.1′

One of the hot topics of today’s vintage watch world is the relative decline in 60s and 70s Heuer sport chronograph prices over the past year to two years. Now, why am I talking about Heuers after a mediocre photo of a Breitling Top Time? I believe the relative decline was largely due to inflated Heuer prices in the first place because the market had yet to open its arms to competing options of the time like this Top Time. Further supporting this assertion are increasing prices over the same time frame for Movado and Breitling sport chronos of the period.

This particular Top Time is a ref. 810 and the first variation produced. In 1964 Breitling debuted the Top Time with this exact watch. Although the single photo provided in the listing is not giving me much to work with, I can say that condition here looks to be more than acceptable. I see no real signs of lume loss and nothing is screaming unoriginal at me. As always, I urge my readers to request more information from all types of sellers, especially an auction house, before committing to bid on or buy any watch featured.

This Top Time 810 is available at Sterling Vault Auctioneers of Farnham, UK through liveauctioneers.com; the bidding starts at £2,100 on February 28th at 5:30am EST.

Early Heuer Carrera 45 ref. 3647

To be clear, I love Heuer Carreras. As I spoke on in the previous section, prices are stumbling a bit as of late and I do appreciate the growing admiration for other families of chronographs. That all being said, when a Carrera is truly special, it flat-out blows all comparables out of the water. Prices have not stumbled for Carreras like these, in fact, they have been bolstered by the market hiccup as collectors hone in on great examples.

This Carrera is truly special. When I first came across this watch, my friend Mr. Eric Wind and his 2013 Hodinkee In-Depth article on early variant Carreras came to mind. The seller notes that this watch dates to 1966 or 1965 but I would argue that it hails from 1964 or even 1963 based on Eric’s work as well as others. All of the key features of the earliest 45s are there: unsigned crown, notched caseback, ‘swiss only’ dial, narrow markers, and, most importantly, a metallic ‘pie-pan’ tachometer track.

This early red tach Carrera is being offered by Vintage Time Amsterdam; the seller is asking a €7,500.

A Lot of Omegas at Fellows

Rounding out my selections for the day is this listing coming up for auction a week from today. Focus in on that bottom watch. I believe this to be an Omega ref. 2292, the same that guided the Royal Air Force through WWII. Unfortunately, the auction house has yet to respond to my inquiry for more information on the watch, however there is a small small chance that this was an issued RAF watch. Although it is more likely a civilian version, I know it deserves its own listing in the 762 lot auction.

The house’s mistake can be your gain as from what I can tell, this piece looks to be original and in decent shape even sporting an assumably original military style ‘bonklip’ bracelet.

CQN today marks the 53rd anniversary of Celtic’s historic European Cup triumph in Lisbon with EXCLUSIVE extracts from Bertie Auld’s autobiography, ‘A Bhoy Called Bertie,’ co-authored by Alex Gordon.

Here is part three of the inimitable Hoops legend’s take on the achievement by Jock Stein’s great team that unforgettable day on May 25 1967.

THE Czechoslovakian champions of Dukla Prague were captained by the wonderful Jozef Masopust who had been voted European Footballer of the Year in 1962 and had led his country to the World Cup Final where they were to lose 3-1 to Brazil the same year.

Dukla had also beaten Ajax Amsterdam in the previous round – the same Dutch side who had annihilated Liverpool 7-3 on their way to the quarter-final. The Dutch were just emerging as a football nation at the time and were to offer us the delights of Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Johnny Rep and so many more in the years to come. However, Dukla had taken care of their threat and were in the semi-finals on merit. Once again, another tense occasion was just around the corner and, thankfully, I had overcome my injury to get my place back in the first team.

A crowd of 74,406 made their way to Parkead on a fairly crisp evening on 12 April and they were about to witness another unforgettable encounter. Wispy Wallace had missed the games against Vojvodina because he hadn’t been registered in time following his £30,000 transfer from Hearts in December. But he was was more than willing and ready to go in this one. It wasn’t a bad debut on the biggest platform European football had to offer – two goals in a 3-1 triumph.

Once more the atmosphere was out of this world. I loved playing in these games; this was what football was all about. People used to say I was arrogant. No, I wasn’t – I was big-headed. Seriously, I was afraid of no-one. They would have my utmost respect, of course, but once that whistle blew to start the game I was determined to show them who was the better man. It was an outlook that surged through the team.

Dukla, like Vojvodina, were a fine passing team, laced with a lot of clever players. I remember they had a beanpole centre-forward called Stanislav Strunc who must have been about 6ft 8in. Caesar was just about unbeatable in the air, but this skyscraper striker made it difficult for our captain all night. Everything looked as though it was going according to plan when Jinky opened the scoring in the twenty-eighth minute which was justice after the referee had ruled out what looked like a perfectly good goal from Stevie earlier.

Have you ever been in the middle of a crowd of over 74,000 people and been able to hear a pin drop? I have. Celtic Park was enveloped in an eerie silence just before the interval when the Czechs equalised. We couldn’t believe it. Our defence got into a bit of a mess on the edge of the box as they tried to hack the ball clear. It didn’t travel any distance until it was being continually blocked by some part of a Dukla player’s anatomy; it was bouncing around like it had a life of its own as it ricocheted all over the place. As luck would have it, it eventually fell to the towering Strunc and he slipped the offending article beyond Faither. Once more, some choice words were exchanged between the keeper and his defenders.

Enter Wispy! TG hammered a pass downfield in the sixtieth minute and Wispy, who had always been a real nuisance when he was playing against Celtic, made his run with Swiss-precision timing. The Dukla defence was caught square as he chased TG’s ball into the box where a defender mistimed his attempt at a clearing header. Wispy anticipated the bounce superbly and then calmly lofted the ball with the outside of his right boot beyond the outrushing Ivo Viktor, their international goalkeeper. The ball floated nonchalantly into the net and it was time for our old ground to rock to its foundations again.

Five minutes later, it was shaking once more. A desperate Dukla defender pawed away a cross from Chopper and the ref awarded us the inevitable free-kick. It was about twenty-five yards out, fairly central and well within striking distance. Suddenly, for absolutely no good reason, something pops into your head that you think will work. I placed the ball down and was aware Wispy was at my side, on the right.

The Dukla defence erected its wall as Viktor, another fine custodian, watched nervously on his line. I stepped forward as though I was about to steady the ball with my hand. The defence must have relaxed for a split-second and that was all I needed. Quickly, I withdrew my hand, touched the ball sideways, Wispy arrived bang on time and clubbed an unstoppable effort wide of the open-mouthed keeper into the net. It might have looked impromptu, but, like so many things, it was a variation on a move we worked on over and over again in training at Barrowfield. It’s always nice when it pays off. It’s even nicer when it puts you to within ninety minutes of the European Cup Final.

The grim and foreboding Juliska Stadium in Prague was the setting for the second leg on 25 April where we knew we had a date with destiny. I think there was construction work already underway in this vast bowl of an arena – it looked like chunks of the stands were missing. Fans appeared to be standing on a hillside. There was a huge police presence, too. If this was supposed to unsettle or intimidate us they were wasting their time.

Jock did the unthinkable that afternoon – he ordered us to play in a defensive formation. It was alien to anything we had been used to since he arrived when entertainment was very much the watchword. He went through everything with painstaking attention to detail, so no-one was in any doubt about his duties against the Czechs. Even Jinky was told to lie deep alongside Cairney on the right and Lemon likewise over on the left alongside TG. Wispy, our two-goal first leg hero, was given a man-marking role on Masopust. We were almost unrecogniseable from the team that had faced Dukla only a fortnight beforehand although there was only one change in personnel, Lemon coming in for Yogi.

We all felt sorry for Stevie. He was given the lone striker’s role and told to keep on the move for ninety minutes; to continually harry their defenders and let them know he was there. It was a hellish task Stevie accepted with a smile on his face! He was fearless that day as he covered every inch behind enemy lines. We would thump the ball out of defence and there was Stevie haring after it, taking two or three defenders with him.

It wasn’t the most glamorous role he was ever asked to carry out on Celtic’s behalf, but he didn’t moan once. There was an occasion, deep in the second-half when the Czechs were resigning themselves to their fate, when he got caught up in a melee deep in their half. About five or six of their defenders descended upon our solitary frontman and Caesar looked at me and asked, ‘Do you think we should help him out, Bertie?’ I answered, ‘Naw, he’ll be fine on his own!’

Faither had made a couple of fine saves when the Czechs had managed to get themselves free of our shackles and we were all mightily relieved when the referee decided to call a halt to the contest. His shrill whistle sounded and we all danced around like schoolboys. Celtic were in the European Cup Final. And, of course, it was to get even more magical and memorable. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a disconsolate Masopust. He was standing there, looking at the ground and, now that he had reached the veteran stage, must have known his last chance of European Cup glory had surely gone. Wispy had made certain he contributed very little in the second leg. He never left his side and shadowed him everywhere, as instructed by Jock.

Masopust looked close to tears as Wispy approached him and offered to shake hands. Masopust didn’t want to know – he refused the gesture. That was disappointing. Wispy had played him cleanly throughout the game and, of course, he was just following orders. Masopust trudged wearily in the general direction of the tunnel, making his way past elated Celtic players as he did so.

I’m glad to say there is a happy postscript. This fine Czech player, one of the world’s first genuine superstars, must have realised how churlish he had been and came into our dressing room to seek out Wispy and offer him his hand in friendship. They duly clasped hands together and Masopust wished Wispy and the rest of us the best of luck for the final. We all appreciated that gesture.

Jock assembled the players around him afterwards and told us, ‘I will never ask you to play like that again. That is a promise.’ It was a promise he kept.

Travelling to Croatia (part 1/3) - air travel

Hello everybody! I am new here and I have been planning to join Tumblr for ages to tell you all about my wonderful travels I've taken throughout the year, and to get in touch with all Tumblrians who share a passion for travelling and love to travel as much as I do. 😊 So hello! This is a great day for me. Even more so as I'm making my very own first blog post.

After seeing a lot of your blogs about travelling, I have decided to do something a bit different for my first blog post. I have decided not to talk about super cool destinations I visited, but rather talk about travelling to my country that I love very much. I will try to tackle some difficulties people have said they had troubles with while visiting and I will give you tips & tricks which, I believe, you will find very useful while staying here. So, let's begin. CROATIA!

A country that is, undoubtedly, on every traveler’s must-visit list. Packed with natural beauties, otherworldly landscapes and mesmerizing, picturesque cities. Every year Croatia is visited by growing number of visitors around the globe and its beauties have been recognized by popular travel bloggers (https://www.danflyingsolo.com/ten-breathtaking-places-bucketlist-destinations/) and well-known media houses (http://www.bbc.com/travel/europe/croatia, https://edition.cnn.com/travel/gallery/beautiful-croatia/index.html). Croatia is getting more popular rapidly with each season and I strongly suggest booking everything in advance if you are planning on visiting. One of those things is the topic of this blog entry – plane tickets.

Although Croatia is visited by large number of tourists each year, its air connection to the rest of the world is somewhat poor. Croatia's central and largest airport is located in its capital, Zagreb. The new airport was opened in 2017 and, unfortunately, nothing much has changed. Croatia's connections to other important airports remained unchanged, so if you are travelling a long distance, e.g. other continent, be prepared for at least one stop, usually in Amsterdam or Frankfurt (e.g. https://www.skyscanner.net/transport/flights/nyca/zag/181204/181211/?adults=1&children=0&adultsv2=1&childrenv2=&infants=0&cabinclass=economy&rtn=1&preferdirects=false&outboundaltsenabled=false&inboundaltsenabled=false&ref=home#results).

Being the largest, your safest bet is to come to Zagreb Airport, meaning there are probably the most flights to Zagreb as opposed to the significantly smaller airports in the rest of the country. There are a few airports in smaller cities, Rijeka, Zadar or Pula, which are cities located on the seaside where you ultimately want to go especially if it is summertime. However, these airports are pretty small and you will have a lot of trouble finding a plane that will get you there. You are in luck if you are from Europe or previously staying in some European city which is directly connected to those cities via Ryanair (https://www.ryanair.com/ie/en/plan-trip/destinations/flights-to-croatia). If that is not the case, I suggest coming to Zagreb, staying for a few days and then travelling to the shore as it is only a two-hour drive from the capital.

Two cities you must check out while in Croatia are Split and Dubrovnik. Good news is they both have airports and that you can often find cheap flight from Zagreb. Another good thing is that there are also better chances of finding direct flights to Split or Dubrovnik as they are the most popular tourist destinations in Dalmatia. It is perfectly reasonable that you want to visit the seaside during summer time, but chances of finding cheaper flights and enjoying these cities to the fullest are significantly higher if you are visiting in the off-season or pre-season. So… these are your options depending on your budget.

Once you are in Zagreb, the next thing you have to tackle is land travel and that is, you're guessing, the topic of my next blog post. Life is about learning!

All the good feelings, now cranked up to the max.

April has been a tornado! The good kind, like Dorothy’s! All my feelings of spring and happy and things looking up here are now in full force. We’ve been having great weather here (sorry, midwest) and everything is starting to feel easy.

I just had one of my favorite weekends here. Highlights include:

chatting with Alesia in Italian and teaching each other new words

crispy, cheap, saucy patatas bravas on a stick, eaten on the go

dancing to reggaeton as we decided on toast nicknames

coffee in the sunshine with a long lost amiga

chatting with a local artist from Mexico, after drawing my third piazza this week

high-fiving new friends during a pickup futbol match

hearing nothing but streams, wind and wildlife on my mountain hike

I’ve loved a lot about different places I’ve lived. Even visiting places, I can see the merits of living there, and I can also usually detect my kryptonites for the city. Amsterdam? Too chill! Lisbon? Too hilly!

But what is there to complain about for Barcelona?! It’s easy to navigate. You can see the ocean or the mountains, and I saw both this weekend. Everything is here! It’s metropolitan, so you have Sephora and Lush when you’re not shopping at Zara, but it’s also so jamcrampacked that I rarely walk more than 30 minutes. Walks filled with windowshopping, people watching, and ancient aqueducts.

Speaking of OLD THINGs, I moved to Born in April! I’m already missing my roomies on Paris, but this location suits me much better. I’m by the cathedrals, the ruins, and the city center that has been active for every rise and fall of Barcelona. The American side of my heart is thrilled to be so close to a Starbucks (I’ve been twice in the first week lol).

Besides moving, April has been full of other “aventuras”. I went to an FCB match!! OMG! I have a conversation buddy named Sergio, and he generously invited me to a match. We went on a cloudy, chilly day, and I got to cheer along for Iniesta (my favorite), Shakira’s husband, and of course, MESSI. I loved clapping and singing along in Spanish, and using Sergio’s vocab to boo the refs: “burro!” (He even cued me at one point!). There was such a buzz being in the stadium - I forgot about the electricity I felt at football games back home.

One really funny thing about the game was that no one bought concessions or came & went from their seats, like at American games. Instead, at the half, the ENTIRE STADIUM stood up at once and rushed the restrooms and concessions. Then they all raced back in time for part two. They also do not sing their National Anthem at the match, because it was mandatory during the fascist dictatorship. Overall, an unforgettable experience.

With every month that passes, I see the chasm widening between me and the US. It’s one of those things that’s happening so slowly I barely notice. Until it’s been 6 weeks since I facetimed with my BFF, or I realize the details I don’t know these days about my friends. Also, I missed yodeling boy, and I’m blaming ~being abroad~. Generally though, I don’t browse social media anymore, so I really need a direct message for major life updates. Getting off my phone and being more present has been great for me.

I’m trying new things here - like playing futbol, speaking Spanish/Italian, and going on my first solo hike. The hike was SO BEAUTIFUL. I went out to Girona-ish yesterday to do a 2 hour hike. You can see it here.

I allowed myself 5 hours and had dropped a few pins for navigation. Since I’ve gone camping maybe twice in the past 10 years, I assumed I’d be a natural in nature.

IT WAS A LIL LESS “Wild by Cheryl Strayed” and a LIL MORE BLAIR WITCH IF YOU FEEL ME!!!! I totally lost the trail for ninety minutes and it was a real wake-up call for how risky solo hiking is. I went in with too few navigational tools and misunderstood how hard it would be to follow a “marked trail” when it’s going up a mountainside, at a diagonal, sometimes on rocks. I really want to try again especially before it gets hot, so next time I will bring: a paper map, a compass, and use the TwoNav app the ENTIRE TIME.

Victories from this experience include: catching both (BOTH!) of my busses, FINDING A HIKE I CAN GET TO BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT, finding the trail head, bringing enough water, eating lunch in a beautiful location, wearing the right clothes and successfully escaping the city for a day. The beautiful weather didn’t hurt, either. And next time will be easier.

When I texted my friend Alex about how it was a disaster, he replied “Life is about learning!” At first I laughed out loud, then I felt so delighted. It’s not too late! I’m 23! I can start playing futbol, speaking a new language or learn some outdoorsy skills.

It’s just the beginning.
