I was just watching the snow and then it happened. 1331 words of Quintessence ghoul sweetness & weirdness. (Bell/Phantom) (I’m obsessed with them)
If you haven't read any of my Phantom stuff, he is blind in the conventional way. But he can see some things, energy things, magic things. No CWs, just two idiots being idiots but also making each other's lives magical.
I did not proof read this, I'm sorry for typos, I will fix them when I'm not so tired.
They’ve spent weeks like this, soon it will be months. In proximity, never speaking, never approaching. Content to simply experience the presence of one another. Always in the library. Darkened corners and hushed voices, considered hallowed ground in the Ministry, it’s a place where someone would have to consider committing the worst kind of disrespect if they felt like harassing the pair.
Not that the others hadn’t noticed. Of course, Zephyr during his bi-weekly archiving, Aether, seeing one or the other slink through a crack in the doorway that they reasonably shouldn’t be able to pass through. Dew, when he decides to go hunting for something that Rain hasn’t read before, which is a task. It was for his sake that they had to initiate an interlibrary borrowing program, and increase the yearly budget for new acquisitions.
Tonight is such a night, that Phantom half sits, half lays across one of the generously stuffed chairs, passing fingers over little bumps that make words. Something new for him on the surface, being able to read without the aid of another, projecting the words into his head or reading aloud.
He understands there’s a storm coming. “Snow up to your eyeballs!” Dew tells him. Phantom jokes, “Who’s eyes, yours or Mountain’s?” He’s good at hiding behind jokes and self depreciating comments.
He’s heard a lot about snow, it’s cold, wet, fluffy, sparkly, pretty. And when they’re lit up on a cloudless night in shades of chartreuse and lilac, breathtaking. The way the night sky seems to penetrate every single flake, that they appear lit from within.
Ghouls are familiar with magic, but sometimes what they can do seems crude compared to that.
And Phantom’s heard them talking about it, he tries to hide the cracks and fissures that form in his heart in those moments. He can see a lot, but he can’t see that. Somehow what falls from the sky is so wondrously pure that he simply cannot get a read on it. Rain, sleet, hail, it’s all blank.
Sure, he’s held his hand out the window to feel it, stood in it until he was soaked to the bone. Because it feels like being washed clean. So rarely is he so fully immersed in absolute nothingness as he is when it’s absolutely pouring down buckets from the sky. From this he finds kinship with Rain, Mist, Delta, River, and Dew.
The snow feels different from the rain though. Sure it gets stuck in his hair, collects on his shoulders, makes his feet damp and cold. But it’s too light, ineffectual.
He’s left searching for an appreciation for what everyone seems to love so much. And tonight, he is searching. With one hand pressed to the icy glass, the other stuffed in his pocket, he concentrates, tries to feel something, anything at all.
Bell has been watching him, from his perch above the theology section. Feeling him, aching and longing for something. What, he’s not sure, he doesn’t intentionally pry. But he can’t always shield himself from what radiates from Phantom in thick, viscous waves at times. It collects and forms a pit in his stomach.
Suddenly he feels a refreshing albeit absolutely freezing blast of air. Phantom has pried one of the windows open. Windows that have not been opened in a very long time. As he pulls it further, layers of paint crackle and flake from the hinges.
Bell watches as he collects a handful. It doesn’t take long, with the way it’s coming down, for a little mountain of big, fluffy flakes to form in his cupped hands. His thoughts become louder, like shouting, loud enough to give Bell a headache. And now it’s clear.
“Why can’t I see it? Just once.”
Elemental energy is strange. No one knows why through various cycles of nature it is cleansed away. Through the clouds, from the mouth of a volcano, deep in the ground beneath layers of soil and clay. Maybe because everything deserves a chance to start again, no longer burdened by the past. Ghouls are not so lucky. Phantom is not so lucky.
For once though, Bell has an idea. Something that might help. He isn’t sure if it’s okay, to acknowledge the scene playing out across the room. Then again, Phantom surely knows that Cowbell can feel it. Because Phantom has the same empathetic qualities. Isn’t that why they perform this strange dance, meters apart?
His feet land silently despite the floorboard’s penchant for creaking. As though he steps on slippers made of clouds, he seems to float rather than walk. He’s one of the few who has learned to harness some of what he’s collected over the years. He might as well use it if it insists on being sucked into his being by a vortex he can’t control.
He considers speaking, but it already feels like there’s a spell cast across the grounds of the Ministry. The snow has already piled on the lawns and the roof, the maze in the garden, the window sill. It’s heavy and oh so quiet. Insulated by a thick quilt made from the downy white flakes
Phantom sucks in a breath that stings his front teeth, the air is bitter cold, and he should probably close the window. But a strange voice tells him otherwise. Tells him to open the other, wide as they’ll go.
Bell could simply show him what he sees, but he knows that’s not the same. Like looking at a rainbow through a television.
The air feels the way it does before it rains, full of static and with a strange metallic smell. The hairs on the back of Phantom’s neck stand on end, and it isn’t from the frigid air permeating the entire library.
Suddenly, from his vantage point, the sky is lit up in technicolor. Bright blues, greens, violet, magenta. So is the ground. So are the flakes melting in his hands, despite how frozen they are. He could see the trees in the distance, now he sees what makes the branches droop.
What he feels - is - elation, unadulterated excitement. What everyone must feel when they see snow for the first time. Only it isn’t the same, most people haven’t experienced a lifetime of longing to see things like other people do.
What Phantom feels, it chokes Bell. Closes off his airways. Makes him stumble back into the shadows far less elegantly than he arrived. Of course he can’t stop what comes in when he is focusing on putting something out.
Thankfully he hasn’t cast some temporary incantation or cheap magic that will disappear as soon as he leaves, so he does. Phantom doesn’t notice, fully engrossed in the prismatic light and shimmering colour.
The way each flake moves of its own volition, in a different direction than its neighbor. He tries to track a singular flake on its descent to the ground, but despite the way it’s accumulating, it’s like none of them ever seem to land.
He isn’t sure how long he stands there with those windows that reach the ceiling pulled wide open. Long enough that there’s a light dusting of snow on the chair he was sitting on, on the floor, on some of the nearby bookshelves.
Long enough for his face to burn furiously, long enough for the tears clinging to his lashes to turn to frost and ice. Long enough that he didn’t realize he was alone now. That he turned, mouth hanging open while he searched for the right words to come out of it.
But he is alone now, what he feels, that feels like Cowbell, is falling from the sky and clinging to the front of his shirt. What has become droplets of water running between his fingers. It’s almost a relief; that Bell is gone. Because Phantom isn’t sure he could find the right words for this, the right way to say thank you.
But then he remembers, he doesn’t have to. Cowbell knows, he can feel it too.

I am genuinely confused on what Moon is supposed to be. The cookbook basically says he sucks. However in the security breach DLC Cassie says she slept better in the daycare so that's gotta mean Moon was good at being the nighttime attendant. So like why would the cookbook portray them as sucky if they were good at their job as nighttime attendant?
But then there are the complaints you can read about in security breach where Moon is scaring kids (but that's when the virus started right? Or no? I am not familiar with the new fnaf lore).
But then there's also the fact where Moon played the villain when they used to be in the theatre (I say fact but I am not actually sure if this is cannon or just a popular headcanon that I am confusing for cannon)
I haven't even read the books yet so I am not sure how they characterize Moon there. I figured I would ask you since you seem to like Moon a lot and know way more about them than I do. Sorry for bugging ye
No bugging done here :) my take on this is that it’s all a matter of the perspective - so for characters like Moon you’ll get some things painting them in a bad light and others more favourable.
(More explanation under the cut as I tend to get carried away when it comes to character analysis)
So generally speaking the FNAF games and books heavily play into the “creepy” “uncanny” aspects of the characters - it’s a horror franchise, it’s gonna play up any spoopy vibes it can and in Moon’s case sadly he gets the short end of the stick because he’s depicted as the darker half of Sun, so a lot of general descriptions will point out how Sun is the good one and Moon is the evil one and leave it at that. However, that doesn’t mean that’s as far as Moon’s characterisation goes or that that’s all he’s intended to be.
The FNAF guidebooks and cookbooks and stuff are written for a broad general audience who aren’t necessarily hardcore FNAF fans but maybe just like the vibes of FNAF, so when those books mention the characters in passing they’re like cameos playing up to what you see if you casually play the game (like “you better watch out, Moon’s gonna get you” “Sun turns evil when the lights go out” - that kind of thing).
The Ruin descriptions are from Cassie’s perspective, and Cassie likes the animatronics and clearly isn’t all that creeped out by them. Could be something to do with her dad working on them making her more curious and less frightened of the way they work and all the “uncanny” vibes other people are getting from them. Either way, it definitely adds more nuance and tells us Moon wasn’t written just to be the evil side of Sun, even if a lot of descriptions and cameos play to that.
In the Tales of the Pizzaplex book, The Bobbiedots (spoilers ahead) Moon is written to be the darker side of Sun that staff in that pizzaplex tried to erase when Sun was updated from being a theatre bot. Even in the theatre, Bobbiedots Moon was the stricter side telling people they’ve been naughty and need to go to bed. This was all a theatre gimmick using the lights and would likely use Sun as kind of a playmate but then he turns into Moon, and suddenly he’s chasing you telling you you’ve been naughty. The thing is, I think some kids would have kind of loved villain Moon. I mean, kids (and adults) generally like booing pantomime villains, they love when they come onstage and tell them they’re all naughty and need to do what they say. I don’t think Moon’s theatre persona necessarily took away from his being liked or made him a bad guy offstage, it just made him inconvenient to staff as a daycare attendant because of power outages they were too cheap to fix. Honestly, I think that characterisation says a lot more about how cheap Fazco were than how evil Moon was destined to be.
Then in another tale, Somniphobia, we have (spoilers ahead) Moondrop and his dream sphere. So two things about this one: Moondrop, the little Moon inside the dream sphere that seems to look a bit like a snowglobe and supposedly “helps you study” (toootally not a ploy for some soul stealing) …he is never strict, he is never harsh, he never tells you what to do. Getting sucked inside the dream sphere is entirely a matter of getting in too deep on our protagonist’s side. He’s given several opportunities to put the thing down and gets called out for overdoing it by basically most of his friends and family yet he never stops because the dreams are too enticing. Moondrop just takes him with him for the ride. It should be said that the dream sphere in the book is wildly popular as a prize and teens love it as a study aid because it literally takes you (in your head) to historical places like ancient Egypt and to the bottom of the ocean etc. it’s just very addictive. So basically Moondrop in this story is neither good nor bad, he’s just a lure. He even takes the guy by the hand at the end - if anything, he’s a quiet and gentle and reassuring presence, for better or worse.
Moon in Security Breach absolutely scares some of the kids - and chances are, so does Sun.
Here’s the Fazwatch message about the daycare attendant:
“Night Terrors CUSTOMER COMPLAINT -
My son never had sleeping problems. But after spending an evening in the daycare, he refuses to sleep with the lights out anymore! He just cries. And then when I do let him keep the lights on, he wets the bed!”
Poor kid can’t win either way. (This message absolutely could mean that the kid can only sleep with the lights on but still has nightmares about Moon - or it could mean neither of them provided a reassuring presence for the kid. Maybe Moon hunted them for sport. Maybe both Sun and Moon’s mannerisms creeped the kid out. For all we know Sun insisting on the lights being on in a dark tone and forcing the kid to remain in his sight might have terrified the kid. There’s really no clear cut way of telling but we do know from this message that the daycare isn’t going great for some kids.)
And then in contrast to this is Cassie’s message about the daycare - sounds like she loved it there both at playtime and naptime. So this is definitely a point against Moon just being pure evil. I really think the guy got a bad rap in Security Breach due to the virus - he has a ton of merch and a whole line of candies. Would you eat a candy based around a guy who’s always trying to kill you? Would you hug a plush of a guy who’s just pure evil?
I think Moon was very convenient for Afton and Vanny since he’s pretty strong, fairly graceful, operates great at night and he basically has a retrieval protocol to get naughty kids to go to bed. Tell him everything is a naughty kid who needs to go to bed and he’ll round up anyone who’s acting out of line because the virus insists he has to. Make him hurt whenever the lights are on (and we know it hurts him intensely, he says as much in Ruin) and he’ll fight ferociously against Sun for his freedom to stop the pain, and won’t listen when Sun tells him something is wrong. Sun kind of confirms Moon isn’t evil in Ruin by insisting they need to be whole. And Moon isn’t trying to be evil in Ruin, he’s in pain and can’t stop himself. Once Eclipse is activated, Moon (as well as Sun) can start healing.
So in summary I think that basically if Moon makes a cameo appearance, it will usually be as “the dark side of Sun”, but that isn’t all he’s supposed to be and the writing shows there is supposed to be reasoning behind his actions and contradictions to the idea that he’s just a bad guy.

Did you enjoy tsats? I've seen you posting and rebloggin some critics, but was the book enjoyable?
So I haven't actually finished the book yet but at this point... I'm not sure that I will. But I have a lot of thoughts anyway. And I've been reblogging the posts that match up with my own reading experience (mostly because it's becoming clear the book continues to follow this pattern I've already noticed, so I'm not concerned about spoilers anymore).
The thing is, I went into the book with low expectations. I'm not a big fan of Will Solace - though I like the Apollo cabin in general. I was really hoping to pick up the book be shown why I should like Will. Instead, I got a character assassination. Will is flawed, and I appreciate those flaws, but not in the way Oshiro (and it was clearly Oshiro at this point) protrayed them.
I was actually prepared for the mismatched lore and some minor retcons - because every Riordan book includes those! Plus, I'm not opposed to a character-based narrative, in fact, I generally prefer stories with a lot of angst and drama. I also wasn't bothered by the lovey-dovey way Will and Nico interact, I found it sweet.
Unforunately, the book, on a technical level, is poorly written. For one, the central metaphor of the story "darkness vs light" is not done well. It lacks concrete examples.
Is it about their powers? It shouldn't be - that dynamic is more about "death vs life" than anything else. If that is the case - it's odd that Will reacting to "death energy" now. Other characters found Nico's "death energu" creepy, Will found it cool. So the entire conflict wouldn't be in character, that's what the metaphor is angling towards (again, it seems purposefully misleading to rebrand "death vs life" to "darkness vs light").
Is it about their personalities? It could be. Nico often describes Will as unfailing kind in this book, always smiling, always warm. It harkens back to Nico's description of Will as a chill cat bathing in the sunlight. Now, we all know that Will isn't like this, at his heart. The flaws beneath that persona could be his "darkness". However, Nico seems to hate that part of Will. The part that's arrogant, that sees his way of doing things as best, etc. Furthermore, Nico is apparently "all darkness" to Will, but like... what does that mean? Nico is a bleeding heart, he's giving and he's caring, and does Will not realise that? Like, if that's the case, why are they dating? How have they been dating for an entire year and Will doesn't know that? It's just... not good.
But that's not where the problems end. The pacing is slow, the entire book drags. I feel like the characters the couple run into don't push the drama / angst as far as it should, considering this is a book focused on that. There are many more characters who could show where Nico and Will's worldviews fundamentally misalign!
Finally, this is an example of a wider plot / set-up issue: Will's backpack. At the start of the adventure, Will fills a large backpack with "stuff". The only real item we're told about is a Sun Lamp. That's an issue, because if we don't know what's in the backpack there's less chance that Will will actually use the stuff inside. And if he does use any items, it will feel contrived. Furthermore, by this point in the book, Oshiro seems to have forgotten that Will is lugging a heavy bag around. When Will gets tired he doesn't mention it nor Nico does offer to carry the bag.
We know that Will has never been on a proper quest, but he has fought in three wars at this point. He is a veteran! I think the backpack would have been an excellent opporunity to show Will's character and experience. Maybe he knows that he tends to freak out in battle when he doesn't know what he should be doing (if someone's injured then, well, it's obvious his job to fix them) - so he's overcompensating.
Have Will pick up items from various campers as he prepares to go. Maybe he gets grenades from Clarisse, traps from Cecil, a magical flare gun from Lou Ellen. There - now we know what Will is taking to the underworld. We are also reminded of Will's friends at camp. And these items would help make Will more useful! Instead of giving Will random new powers, just... have him use the items he brought with him!
I have no idea if Will does, in fact, pull something out of his bag at some point. But at this point, I'm really doubtful.
((I actually have so many more issues with this book but these are some examples))
I hope you don't mind the rant! I really did go into this book with an open mind - I was really to give it a chance. But pretty much every writing choice Oshiro made is one I disagree with, and that's hard to put aside.

Iok, but hear me ooout!!! A Vampire!MC.
Let's suppose in Astraea vampires are just a myth, and R3+Rime start seeing MC has a peculiar behaviour (avoiding sunlight, being aware he is eating but for some reason they look weaker and weaker everyday) they do not pay much mind to it until MC ends up either passing out from starvation, like, just imagine the shock, the not knowing wth is wrong with mc 🤚🏻😭😭😭😭😭 and mc just being like: "Uh... Haven't feed on months" and the R4 being all like ?!?!??!!?!?? You eat everyday?!?!
And mc being all like: yeah... That kind of food doesn't work on me... It's just that I didn't want you to feel disgusted at me, I need blood. I'm a vampire
Heyy! Sorry this took so long.😕 I had fun writing this one, I did keep it pretty tame though. And it’s a bit short….I haven’t written for these guys yet (sorry if the characters are OOC). I tried my best to capture their essence. I hope it was what you wanted. Thanks for the ask.💕
Last Legacy: M3+Rime with a Vampire! MC
Warnings: Non graphic mentions of blood. Suggestive content.
Tumblr media
Is shook™️
And concerned that you haven’t been properly fed and taken care of since your arrival, especially as you’ve been exhausting yourself with learning magic and training.
Will NOT be disgusted though! Far from it actually.
Is the quickest to wrap his head around it.
He is so intrigued.
He will legit just put on his glasses and whip his notebook out of thin air, as he starts asking you random questions and writes your answers down.
Stuff like: were you bit? Or born a vampire? Do you have any powers?
(Will use his *ahem* research as fanfic inspiration)
Vampire lore from Astrea will differ from the lore on Earth, so there are a lot of facts and assumptions you’ll have to clear up. (about your type of vampire at least.)
Will definitely know where to get you a steady supply of blood. (just don’t ask him bout it.)
Considers getting you to turn him into a vamp or at the very least bite him.😏
Now that he knows why you avoid sunlight, he makes sure to include you in his midnightly escapades more often.
Will tease you. But will get all blushy and flustered if you turn the teasing back on him.
If you got turned and it was traumatic, he’ll rein in his endless questions and teasing. He doesn’t want to upset or tigger you. He knows what it’s like to have gone through a traumatic experience.
He gives you support in whatever way you need. <3
If you don’t want to be a vampire, he’ll use all the magic and resources at his disposal to find a cure.
Tumblr media
Is also shocked.
But it also explains your sketchy behaviour.
Once he gets over the initial shock he’s just like. “Cool you’re a vamp, anyways.”💁🏻‍♀️
He’s very nonchalant about it.
Even with all of his illegal activities, he doesn’t know where to get blood from.
But, he will happily volunteer for you to bite and feed from him.😏😏
Once you get your fill of blood and get your strength back he is amazed (turned on) by your dexterity and overall physical skill.
Especially when you’re training together!!!
Is concerned but relived. He is more confident in your abilities after this and worries a little less when the two of you aren’t together.
Will make a whole bunch of vamp jokes, all the time, 24/7.
Is low key interested in the lore. Will just sit there as you brush his hair, listening as you tell him all the history/stories.
Will indirectly ask you how you became a vampire.
If it was a traumatic experience, he’ll just give you cuddles and ask if you wanna talk about it.
(If it was against your will though, he is FUMING!! And will be more gentle with you too.)
Tumblr media
Mum mode activated!!
She’s VERY concerned rn!
You’ve been here this entire time, learning magic and fighting, and you haven’t even been eating properly!?!?
Is confused as to why you didn’t say something sooner.
Doesn’t think it’s disgusting but she does find it somewhat off-putting.
Vamp lore on Earth can be horrific, but I bet the lore in Astrea is worse.
Even with her street smarts, she doesn’t know where to get blood.
Everyone knows who she is and is scared that they’re gonna get arrested or something so, they are of no help.
One of the few times she’ll turn to Felix and get his help with this.
She may not always agree with his questionable behaviours? But she needs help, for you.
Even if you have special vamp powers, she’s even more protective and overbearing with you. She doesn’t want you hurt.
And a vampire? An actual vampire? She doesn’t know how to handle that, or what it means, and she doesn’t like what she doesn’t understand! Therefore until she does, she’s gonna be more protective.
Will eventually bring it up and ask you how you’re a vampire. She’ll also ask about the lore and everything.
She wants to know as much about it as she can.
As she learns more and more, and finds that some of the things she thought was true was nothing more than a myth, she’ll be more supportive and open to the idea.
If you got turned against your will or it was just an overall traumatic experience, she’ll just wrap you up in her arms and offer support and comfort.
She isn’t all that good with affection or reacting to trauma, but she does her best to be there for you.
Is upset and angry by the idea that you got turned against your will. If she ever meets the person that turned you, even if you asked, she will throw hands with that person.
Tumblr media
For a being that doesn’t seems like he gets shocked or genuinely surprised by things often, he is definitely caught off guard. He didn’t expect that.
Is trying to get his head around how tf you were able to function up until this point
Acts like he doesn’t care but definitely is concerned.
There is a reason he once wielded the Astrolabe. He is a healer and is greatly fascinated by the inner workings of bodies and medicine in general.
And it’s because of this, that he’ll (if you’re still at that point in your relationship) stop trying to kill you for more than five minutes and ask you questions and try to assist you. (but, in a way that shows he doesn’t care.🤥)
Will want to know if you have powers, and how the whole vampire thing works.
Might not necessarily ask about the lore (it depends on what kind of relationship you have) but if you’re telling someone else while he’s in the vicinity, he’ll listen.
He finds the lore intriguing.
He is also sketchy enough to know where to get blood.
He will also volunteer to be bit if needed.😩
Will low key find the whole thing hot tho.
Will secretly hide garlic and other stuff around to see how you’ll react.
Is the least surprised that vampires exist but, that doesn’t mean he expected you to be one.
This smug bastard will make far more sexual jokes and innuendos now that he knows.
Doing this classic “bite me” among others. Purely to tease you and annoy you.
If y’all are like really close friends or a couple his reactions are slightly different:
He’ll more more openly concerned. And will voice those concerns.
He will ask about the lore and cuddle with you as you tell him about it.
Also will still ask you about how you became a vampire.
If it was traumatic, he’ll comfort you and talk to you about your experience. He’s had his fair share of traumatic experiences and knows some stuff to help deal with trauma and even heal from it.
If it turns out it was against your will, he’s soooo pissed off and annoyed. He will still be there for you though.
You might have to stop him from activity tracking the person down. He doesn’t even care if they’re worlds away. He just wants to have a chat🥰

Im the hater anon omg i didnt mean to lead u astray but i haven't finished it i'm just over half done. i probably will finish just so i can coherently say why i don't like it bc rn my thoughts are all over the place but  u hit all the major points im like nodding and taking notes rn.  Its very shallow lore wise like its all overly complex exposition that barely effects the plot. I could write about this for 100 years but basically it was boring and i just feel like it has nothing to say like theres no purpose or message and i think speculative stuff should have SOME weight behind it idk.  That paired w how the writing itself is like..not pretty or artful or anything………………….
And on top of that its not even actually funny. Instead of real jokes its just 100 million mcu quips awkwardly inserted so that no situation is ever treated genuinely or seriously or with depth. For example. My personal least favorite part beyond general quality so far is how often they bring up gideon being inappropriately horny… idk how else to word it.. Its one of her 3 personality traits. they mention her porn collection i swear every couple of pages. its played 4 jokes but like the rest of it its literally unfunny and feels so out of place. Like this is right when they just discovered an incinerated body → ”she looked troubled, which made Gideon sad, but she was also soaked right through to the skin, which made Gideon need a lie-down.” Its like if someone whose only point of reference was tiktok during that era where every vaguely masc woman got made fun of for being a quote hey mamas lesbian unquote tried to write a masc woman.  Reading it as a masc lesbian myself is just sort of embarrassing idk if other ppl feel differently but it just feels overplayed and goofy.
Anyways… this is all very long and incoherent but thank u for complaining and vindicating me… i started reading it a couple days ago on a whim bc ive been seeing ppl talk abt it a lot lately and i was instantly SOOOOO disappointed. Part of it was definitely that i was expecting something very different because of how people talk about it but also its just like bad. Its insane. I also had no idea abt the roachpatrol thing so ummmmmm :(
hiiiiiiiiii omg so your suffering isn't even over yet my condolences.
the worldbuilding exposition industrial complex needs to end im so serious. I just had such a nice conversation with some writer friends about soft vs hard magic systems and world-building and how frustratingly common the assumption that more complex lore you dump the more sophisticated your story is at the moment. in reality many more sophisticated stories deliberately utilise abstraction and whimsy for thematic statements. v happy for brandon sanderson fans but again, a lot of those stories are basically like mystery novels except the magic is the mystery, whereas the speculative fiction authors who... actually speculate...are often using it as a tool to speculate about our own existence.
and the writing is so ugly like I've read a couple of chapters and I feel like i could get through a mid story if it's at least well written but it wasn't even inoffensive it was actively offputting like that prose was stinkyyyyyyyyy..... and the quips exactlyyy like who is laughing at none pizza with left beef anymore and the fact a lot of it isn't even the author being witty but just like. a reference to a meme? it's literally supposed to be like gritty but then everyone is memeing and quipping all the time how are you meant to take that seriously?
and okay the like sexualisation of Gideon had kind of been my suspicion but I hadn't read enough to make that claim for certain so. that's disappointing to have it confirmed. given that the author is a fem woman who calls herself a lesbian whilst being homestuck married to a guy, it really brings up some kind of discomfort in me to be using masc women that way and making a joke out of them and their sexuality and calling them himbos and shit like. it really doesn't seem like she actually knows any masc women??? and when that was a huge part of the marketing for the book it comes to feel exploitative.
one thing to be aware is that tor like. pushed it really hard marketing-wise for whatever reason. I guess they feel it symbolises a new era of sci-fi and like were using it as an outreach effort to engage the generation that mostly only reads fan fiction or whatever which I guess cheers if it achieves that. but the majority of negative reviews are specifically that it was nothing like what they expected it to be, because of the.... super gimmicky marketing.
the tagline being sword necromancer lesbians in space or something so lame 😭 and it really seems like the elements came first and the justification came second so it's never really explained why they use swords instead of more technologically advanced weapons (bc the answer is 'it sounds cool') or really why it needs to be in space at all (because the answer is 'it sounds cool'). even the necromancy is supposedly fairly tangential and ive seen people be underwhelmed how much actual lesbianism is involved too 💀
9mbut yeah the r0ach patr0l thing I wish people were more aware of because honestly above anything else, I've seen people who were fans and then found this out and felt super uncomfortable so I think people deserve to know what kind of background she has, and this is literally where she developed her writing and her name as a BNF so it's directly connected to her current career not just like a celebrity who tweeted something dumb when they were 14. like I think it's fair to take that into account + idk it's INTERESTING to me that she went from that to debuting with a masc lesbian whom she projects like comic hypersexuality onto it really is all much to think about truly

The AFTERTHOUGHTS Movie
Tumblr media
Movie: The Super Mario Bros. Movie (April 5th, 2023)
Console: Fuckin' uuuuuuuh.... DVD player....
I wanted to do this when the movie launched but thought to myself "oh I could write my thoughts up in a twitter thread who cares what I think about mario bleh bleh bleh" so I didn't bother. But like 5 months have passed since I first saw the movie. I've watched it about 4-5 times now and I STILL haven't written up my thoughts. So no, clearly I CANNOT write my feelings up in a twitter thread. And YEAH, no one cares what I think about Mario I'm very aware of that. But FUCK YOU I'm gonna tell you why I think this movie is actually amazing!
I've been seeing some people talk about it lately but most comments I see about it nowadays are a little negative. And a lot of the sentiment around this movie before launch was negative. I was in this boat too prior to the first trailer coming out. But I gotta be honest, no, like. I really really REALLY like this movie. And I just gotta gush about it a little bit.
EVEN FOR A MOVIE (which I'll probably never do this again until maybe Sonic 3 comes out lol) THIS IS NOT A REVIEW! This is just me throwing up my thoughts on the movie now that I've watched it like 200000 times.
MARIO MOVIE SPOILERS AHEAD!! IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET WATCH IT I SWEAR TO GOD WATCH IT IT'S GOOD!!!
Opening
So, some of you may know, some of you may not. I used to be a big Mario fan. I've mentioned it in the past on twitter and such but this series used to be my LIFE. I'm not kidding. I was obsessed with it for YEARS, since I was child. I loved studying it and brainstorming headcannon and thinking about it and learning about it and just talking about lore stuff with people from the series. And I'll be honest, while lately I'm kinda still into it here and there, I haven't been super into it that intensely in a long while. For a lot of reasons. So I was very hesitant on the Mario movie. I wasn't sure if I was gonna like it. But I went in DAY 1 to see this movie. I had faith, I had to see how it would go.
And when I left that theater I was BLOWN AWAY. I LOVED IT!! I went and I saw it again about a week later. And I STILL LOVED IT! I bought it on DVD and rewatched it 2-3 more times with the rest of my family and I STILL LOVED IT EVERY TIME! It's not perfect by any means but in this chaotic write up I hope I can explain why it hit me so hard as a returning Mario fan. To get it out of the way, I'm gonna open up with my problems with it and then go into the praise.
Stuff I didn't like
So again, I do have some complaints so I'd like to start there just to get them out of the way. First up, I still have a problem with some voice actors. For the most part, they're all pretty good. I think Chris Pratt is better than the trailers would have you believe (which I fucking called I knew they were picking his worst lines for the trailer) and I was pleasantly surprised with how good Seth Rogan was for DK. Bowser, Toad, Luigi, they were all great! But dude Cranky's voice SUCKS so bad. I hate it. And I liked Peach but I wasn't in love with the voice? But not as bad as Cranky lmao.
And the pacing IS weird. This is a big issue I've seen a lot of people complain about and it's totally fair. It's not well paced. I think it's better on rewatches, but it's not perfect by any means. Like they jump back and forth between Mushroom Kingdom and Dark Land so much but at the same time Luigi just kind of isn't in it enough? It's very weird. And I feel like it progresses a little oddly between the different areas. But ultimately again, it's fine it's not as bad as people say even though it is weird.
And of course, the issue of removed music. I think that pretty much all the copywritten songs used in the movie were the wrong choice when the remixes that were absolutely superior were available. 'I Need A Hero' works for sure, I didn't mind that. But 'Take On Me' is SO out of place especially when they had a fantastic DKC remix to use for that! THANK GOD they actually used the Starman theme cause it would've ruined what was otherwise one of my favorite Mario scenes ever (we'll get to it).
Also, like, Toad is just toadally dropped by the end of the movie. He barely speaks towards the end and it's a shame cause I LOVED Toad in this movie! He absolutely deserved more attention in the second act of the movie. Thankfully he still shows up even though he barely gets to participate (did he even fight in the final battle? I hope he did)
And I have some other nitpicks. No Toadsworth L. Not enough powerups get used. Again, not enough Luigi.... Why is Lumalee in it? I assume it's to build up to something in the sequel. But still. Odd. BUT other than that? Man I just gotta sing the praises. There's so much positive to talk about.
Stuff I liked
OKAY! There's a lot I gotta compliment with this movie. For some basic stuff. It looks LOVELY! I love everyone's design! Mario and Luigi are so cute, Toad easily could've been creepy but they make them work fantastically, DK looks cute, BOWSER IS AMAZING! Peach looks a little odd but I still think she's very beautiful to me! And the environments are super stunning. The Mushroom Kingdom looks great, Dark Land looks fantastic, Rainbow Road looked SO GORGEOUS! And the music is AMAZING! So many cues from so many different games and themes. The basic Mario themes, Bowser's various themes, Galaxy stuff, there's even a cut SMRPG song apparently!? The music is amazing and relistening to it now it's blowing me out of the water all over again!
I know it's gonna sound like I'm overhyping it or exaggerating. But this movie is SUPER good with how it handles the source material. It's pretty much exactly what I would want out of a Mario movie at least in terms of how the world is presented. The shots of Mario overlooking the Mushroom Kingdom on the big shroom is AMAZING. All the hills and mushrooms and floating blocks. I adore the way it takes game mechanics like power ups and floating blocks and puts them into a non-game setting in a way that works SO well. In a way I've always envisioned the world to work myself. I LOVE seeing blocks as naturally occurring things in the Mario world. I love when Mario first appears in the world and you see Biddybuds walking around, you see Cheepcheep swimming, you see even a fucking Bramball walking exactly how it does in the games but like, it's not in a game! It's alive! They took how these creatures act and put them in a living world exactly how they would be! It's amazing! They even managed to take traditional Mario levels like the Cheepcheep bridges and turn them into a real area you could visibly see yourself walking in! It's not just in a video game it looks and breathes like it's real! Does this make any sense? I'm blown away by how they put game stuff into it but it doesn't feel like game stuff, it feels how this game stuff would feel irl. I love how they explain the powerups, I didn't think they'd even touch the Super Mushroom! But the idea it makes it you taller and gives you super human jumping is GENIUS! That's perfect! I hadn't even seriously considered how the growing and shrinking works, but this movie does it perfectly!
I think the best example I can give about this is the scene where they are camping in a field of fire flowers. This scene is genuinely amazing to me. This is a setting I've always DREAMED of seeing in a Mario game. But it's just not exactly something you'd ever get to see in a Mario game, but this movie does it. I LOVE seeing the power ups being naturally occurring in nature. Naturally occurring Fire Flowers are something I LOVE thinking about in my own head canon. They look so gorgeous in this movie and the whole scene looks so amazing. I love seeing Peach grab one and the slow transformation sequence and how they turn that into a practical thing and how Peach uses the Fire Flower not as a video game weapon or item, but just as a simple tool to start a campfire. I don't know if I'm describing it well enough but this is stuff I've always DREAMED about the Mario universe working like if you lived there. But somehow this movie just GETS IT. Naturally occurring floating blocks, powerups growing in nature, enemies existing in nature as animals! It's perfect!
And even the crossover between the "real" and "mushroom" worlds are done SO well! I am a pretty staunch "Mario was BORN in the Mushroom World and there is no Real World" kinda guy but this movie brings it back PERFECTLY. I love seeing Mario and Luigi as kind of losers? It's not an angle you ever really see with them, not that I need to have a sad NSMB game where Mario and Luigi are losers, of course lmao. But still it's neat! And seeing them living a normal life is cool! It's something we've gotten from previous Mario projects but never really with the games or something that follows the games so faithfully. But I adored seeing this side of their lives in a way that usually I'm not super die hard into as "canon"? If that makes sense? But I LOVED seeing the Mario family. I audibly GASPED when they showed up!! LIKE WHAT!? OFFICIAL MARIO MOM AND DAD FACE REVEAL!?!? I NEVER WOULD'VE SAW THIS COMING AND I DON'T THINK PEOPLE APPRECIATE HOW INSANE IT IS TO SEE MARIO RELATIVES IN 2023!!! THAT'S NUTS I NEVER THOUGHT THAT WAS GONNA HAPPEN BUT AGAIN THIS MOVIE DOES THE IMPOSSIBLE! And this movie made me really appreciate the whole "real world vs mushroom world" concept in a way I never have before. While I still prefer the idea Mario was born in the Mushroom world I think there's a really good "You Could Wear the Mask" element that comes from him being from the real world. Which is cool! It makes Mario an everyman the same way Spiderman is. Which I like!
And even the characters themselves I think they're all handled super well. Mario being super brave and standing up for himself, but still folding when he's approached by his father. It's interesting, again, something that could never be tackled with a version of Mario in the past. I love how kind Luigi was and how he's cowardly but still has moments of strength. And he's his own person not a Mario clone. And I love how much brotherly love the two genuinely show for each other. It's something you only really get to see in the RPGs and Luigi's Mansion honestly. I love that Princess Peach was still cute and high femme but totally kicked ass and at no point in the movie did they go like "BWAH!? A GIRL DOING BOY THINGS??? HUH?" NO! They just let Peach be a bad ass! I loved it! I loved DK being a showboating super jock type guy who also wants to impress his dad. It's probably not something I ever would've thought to do for DK but it's SO good and it makes such an interesting parallel between Mario and him. I LOVED Mario and DK's rivalry. I wasn't expecting DK to become a main teammate so that was WONDERFUL to see. When they work together in the eel and when they get to the Mushroom Kingdom and when they still bicker and argue I love it it's so cute it's such a good way to interpret this dynamic! And Bowser is done SO well I love how utterly psychotic he is. The way they handle how much he hates Mario without EVER MEETING HIM is so perfectly done! And I love that they don't pull any punches. He's ruthless and cruel like how Bowser is. And they don't waste any time trying to redeem him or make him seem like "oh well he's just a big softie :(" NO, HE'S A MANIPULATIVE FREAK! I'm so glad they actually beat the shit out of him! They make him scary and big and imposing and they take him down! It's SO wonderfully done!
But without a doubt, my favorite part of the movie is the finale. It's straight up amazing. It gives me chills just thinking about it. The whole finale where they end up back in the real world might be one of my favorite Super Mario scenes across the entire franchise. Where Bowser beats the shit out of Mario and sends him running away scared into a pizza parlor. It's scary it's not something you usually see. And when Mario is cowering while Bowser calls him a loser, it's interesting, again you don't usually see this lack of confidence in Mario. He's genuinely bruised and banged up. Like, he has physical damage on him. Not just "OH I'M SHORT NOW!" Damage, but REAL painful injuries you can physically see. Again, this isn't something I'd probably want in a Mario game but for a movie it's daring, it's crazy they were allowed to do it. It's unique. This type of edgy stuff is something I LONG to see in the Mario series in some way and it finally happened. And the whole part where the ad they made at the start plays glitched out and gives Mario the newfound confidence he needs. It's beautiful again it gives me chills. And he gets back up and fights it's so cool. THIS IS THE MARIO I LOVE, AND IT'S JUST SO INTERESTING TO SEE THAT PERSONALITY CHALLENGED! It's a similar reason I love the Sonic movies so far, he's different he's more childish he's not always 100% on his game like in the games. It's cool to see them do these things with these characters. But then, the best part. Is when Luigi takes a stand and saves Mario from Bowser's breath. "As long as we're together, everything will be okay" it's beautiful. I'm actually getting a little emotional writing it up. It's perfect. Mario and Luigi are a TEAM. They are a DUO, I WANT TO SEE THEM WORK TOGETHER TO FIGHT! AND THEY DO! I LOVE WHEN BOWSER TRIES TO KICK THEM AND THEY STAND TALL WHILE THE ROAD BREAKS BEHIND THEM!! SEEING THEM KICK THE SHIT OUT OF THE WHOLE KOOPA TROOP WITH THE STARMAN THEME PLAYING IS GENUINELY BREATHTAKING I LOVE THIS WHOLE FUCKING FINALE! AND SEEING THEM SWING BOWSER AROUND AND THEN STOMP HIM THROUGH THE FLAMES IS SO COOL! IT'S AN AMAZING FINALE THAT'S DONE SO RIGHT WITH SO MANY LITTLE CHARACTER BEATS BETWEEN MARIO AND LUIGI AND EVEN BOWSER JUST SO PERFECTLY I'M UTTERLY BLOWN AWAY BY HOW GOOD THIS FINALE IS!
I just fucking love this movie man. Sure it is a lot of references, it's not perfect, but it's a genuinely good Mario movie. And more than that, I'd go as far as to say it is a genuinely good movie straight up. I don't watch a lot of them, but I've seen enough to say I love this movie as a movie.
Responding to Criticisms
I've seen some criticisms of the movie I'd like to address. Some of these are from friends, so if you see something you said here PLEASE do not take it as an insult! No hard feelings what so ever I just wanna give my two cents! Please understand it is COMPLETELY fine to have not liked this movie, but in the same vein it's totally okay for me to give my peace on what I think about other people's toughts.
For one, a big one, "it's just an hour of Mario references." Yeah? I mean kinda. But a lot of those references are just... World building or the Mario world as it is? Like... Were you mad when the Chaos Emeralds showed up in Sonic 2? That's a reference, but it's a part of the world. In my opinion I think most of the big references are in the background anyway, so it's okay if they're laid on a little thick. Plus, again, a lot of the references are just to how the Mario world would work. Plus there's a TON of original stuff and original interpretation on these concepts.
"Ah it's just a kids movie there's nothing interesting in it" Again I could not agree less. Sure it is a kids movie. But there's still some good themes in it, some fantastic concepts and interpretations on the characters. Some kinda edgy stuff in it. iirc they actually say stuff like "Hell Hound" and Kill and stuff you wouldn't expect from a Mario thing. And again, you see Mario bruised up! THAT'S CRAZY!! DOES NO ONE ELSE THINK THAT'S NUTS!?
"It's probably canon so it's not doing anything interesting" I'm sorry, no. For a fanbase that's so intense on Mario lore and going insane any time Mario isn't some sort of bible lore heavy series. I think people are seriously overlooking fascinating elements and mysteries present in this movie. Such as how do the real world and the mushroom world relate? How are they combined after the first movie? Where does Peach come from? Where did the star come from? What's gonna happen with Bowser going forward? This movie, while following the Mario world closer than say, the Sonic movies. It is absolutely doing its own thing. And I'm sure more and more unique things will come from future sequels. It's an interesting movie in of itself.
"Princess Peach is so bad in it" I don't agree! I don't think she's perfect but again she's a total bad ass while still wearing cute dresses and being high femme like I said. And like I said, they never are like "WOW GIRLS CAN'T DO BOY STUFF HOW SHE DO THAT!?" They just let it happen, they just let Peach be cool. But also it's neat to see her doing princess stuff and they still show her having weakness, I LOVE when Bowser manipulates her by torturing toad (that's such a fucked sentence) because it shows she really cares and she has to make hard choices but she still fights through them! And again, it's not like she's the only competent character. She lived in that world I would hope she's better at it than Mario lmao. But the other characters absolutely hold their own and are just as strong as she is! She's works perfectly.
"Bowser doesn't even know Mario why does he hate him?" That's the idea! I can't find the post now but someone explained it SO well! The whole concept is that he has this idea of Mario built up in his head. Bowser is totally delusional. Peach not loving him has NOTHING to do with Mario and everything to do with Bowser being a psycho! And again in my opinion that is such a good interpretation of the character and even Mario and Bowser's relationship!
"It's not as good as the live action Mario Movie" This is a matter of opinion of course but I gotta be honest. This movie is way better. And I want to make it clear: I LOVE the live action Mario Movie. I liked it before you did. I'm gonna be up my own ass about this one cause I know it's true cause for YEARS y'all were saying it sucked until suddenly it became popular to like it out of nowhere. I ran a President Koopa RP tumblr for a while and had seen the movie multiple times before it became the cool thing everyone liked. And while I still love that movie, I just gotta say as a Mario fan I appreciate how this one handles Mario and Luigi's relationships more and I appreciate the more close to canon look at the world. Live Action Mario is certainly more unique, but doesn't fill me with the same sense of child like wonder that makes me feel like the Mario franchise still has magic worth holding onto even nowadays.
But again, this is all a matter of opinion. You are ABSOLUTELY allowed to not like this movie. That's fine. But similarly, I should be allowed to absolutely gush about how amazing the movie was to me and how much it means to me as a Mario fan who had their whole life changed by this series.
Final Thoughts
Man.
That was a lot. I can't contain myself sometimes. But I'm glad I finally got to at least in some way gush about this movie. Cause I really did love it and writing my thoughts on it really makes me wanna watch it again. So I probably will this weekend as a birthday gift to myself.
I find it a little difficult to be so plainly honest about Mario things I love. For multiple reasons. I think this fanbase is a little poisoned. And I feel like being genuine and enjoying what you like about the series can be kind of met fairly negatively a lot of the times. And again with how teetering-tottering I am with my love of the series lately it can only make it more difficult. So I hope I don't come off as annoying about this movie. But Mario whether I like it or not means a lot to me and I have a lot to say about this movie.
I had a friend tell me I couldn't possibly give a non-biased take on the movie. And maybe that's fair. But honestly I don't think it's entirely fair to write off why I love the movie because of that. I genuinely love this movie, not only as a Mario fan but just as a casual movie watcher. I thought it was good. And yeah maybe I wouldn't like it as much if I wasn't so insane about the series for so long. But I do genuinely hope you can understand after seeing all this why it means so much to me and why I think people are being a little unfair to it. I genuinely think it's being nitpicked too hard. It's a truly incredible Mario experience that I loved.
From the way game mechanics are translated to a living world, to the way characters are reinterpreted, to yeah, even just the little references. I flipped when a small part of the Luigi's Mansion theme played, so what? I like Mario, man. So what!?
So yeah. I'm sure I could say more but I'm getting a little embarrassed. So I think I'll wrap it up now.
===
Thanks for reading, if you somehow actually made it through that whole ramble. You are an absolute hero. I waiting a long time to talk about this (still not as long as I took to talk about Sonic 2 though lmao) but I hope in any small way I could convey why this movie really hit home for me in a way I honestly didn't think it could.
I'm genuinely interested to see where the Mario movies go from here and I'll gladly watch them all. I'll be there day 1 to watch the sequel, the DKC movie, the Luigi's Mansion movie. I don't care if it makes me a sheep you've got me hook line and sinker. I'm so blown away by how well it got the series down and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here.
Thank you again for putting up with my insane ramblings. Please follow me on twitter if you wanna... idk see me be a crazy person more.
That's all from me, go out and watch a movie that really makes you emotional!

When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass it on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love!
oh what a cool thing 😭💛
I've only got 4 fics on ao3 right now but I'll pad it with something from my tumblr ramblings too fjdaskl
METAMORPHOSES - (109k+ wip) Eddie post-Kas possession recovery fic ft. Steddie hurt/comfort slow burn and the Eddie & Nancy friendship of my dreams
I think this is genuinely my favorite thing I've written so far even though it's not done yet. It feels like I've learned a piece of what it's taken to pull this together from every other thing I've written for this fandom and I'm finally finding a cohesive way to put those pieces together. Upside Down twisty turns? Character studies? Motifs and throughlines? you know the drill. I love this Eddie with my entire goddamn soul I'm so grateful to anyone who has taken the time to hang out with me in this little universe
there's blood in my ears (and a fool in the mirror) - (58k) Eddie & Max escape from the UD post S4 ft. Steddie getting to know each other pre S4
my very first ST fic, I just NEEDED to write about Eddie and Max stumbling their way into chosen family-hood and stumbled myself into making Boys Kiss along the way and although it's not as popular as some of my other stuff, I love this little world and I love my first try at playing around with UD logistics and DIY lore.
someone else's favorite song - (120k) Steve centric as he grieves the death of his mother and stumbles through the ups and downs of a FWB relationship with Eddie
This will never not have a special place in my heart, I got so much out of writing this both on a technical writing learning level and just the catharsis that always comes with writing about grief for me. I write for myself to such a degree that it still shocks me every time someone mentions connecting to this story and I am so full of gratitude that my catharsis could be yours too so just <3
that's just wasteland, baby! - (19k) Steve centric post S4 apocalyptic Hawkins ft. life affirming shower sex and buzzcut!Steve
I am always thinking about the immediate aftermath of season 4 and what kind of impact All That would have on the actual town of Hawkins, I mean we are RIFE with opportunity for good apocalyptic romance/ found family and this was my go at it. I'm really proud of managing to do something short and slice-of-life rather than accidentally writing a novel fajdskl and I had a really good time just narrowing my focus and making it a small story in such a Big setting ya know
reprogrammed au - (tumblr meta) after the end of the war with the UD, the people responsible for the NINA Project use that technology to wipe the Party's memories (at least for a little while)
If it's not already clear, I really love playing with the boundaries of what sort of unexplored set-ups exist for cool premises in the canon ST universe and this is just a further extension of that. I would love to write a longer more involved version of this, because there are just SO many avenues to take, especially with such a broad ensemble cast, and I love a good, kind of fucked up introspective moment/ any excuse to mess around with structure and unreliable narration so this is like the gold mine for me.
I have no idea who's already done this so apologies if I send out any repeats! I just haven't been scrolling as much this week because I'm busy getting my ass kicked by situations and circumstances and such woof

what's the most recent bit of oc lore you came up with?
probably the lore of persipan, a daemon (anomalous demon-like alien) who i originally made to be, in a way, daemon-aroace (daemons' 'default' attraction/kind of relationship is mentioned to be a sense of hate-love, very strong hate mostly). but i've since made her just entirely aroace, no romantic/sexual attraction whatsoever. this got kind of long so i'm putting it beneath the cut. to summarise it's mostly just about how she's aroace, as in how she feels about it/the way she dealt with finding it out
her history in regards to love goes: thinks she's entirely 100% normal (by daemon standards) and going to get a good grade at being a daemon something that is both normal to want and possible to get, before realising that, oh wait, other daemons are serious about their hate-love, and starting to have doubts. an event in which another daemon tears off part of her wing (the highest disrespect and thus a strong declaration of hate-love) leads her to consider herself daemon-aroace and label herself as such (or, rather, the equivalent term in-universe), being overall quite repulsed by the hate-love.
so she ends up in a multi-species society, and starts thinking that, hey, maybe she's just better than all those other daemons? surely her ~real~ non-hate love is more pure and good and so incredibly acceptable to other species than any other daemon's would be? it's, uh! as you can tell already from what i mentioned (she's 100% aroace) kind of a whole (harmful, VERY FLAWED) thing that ends up causing her (and probably other daemons around her) nothing but strife, especially when she realises, oh shit wait, she's not really feeling any of it, no attraction there whatsoever. she's dated multiple people before this realisation, and is actually currently legally married (to umi, a lucevian), although it's more of a platonic partnership to the two. persipan is pretty happy with her current situation, and starting to accept that she's neither somehow more pure nor irreversibly broken, she can just exist
in a slightly different tone, one of persipan's past relationships was with may heartsease, an unusually tall, long-lived apidee who also has some lore i haven't written down anywhere yet (stole the corpse of a dead queen to necromance, y'know, normal bee stuff), but also she's the owner of a clinic in the same area as persipan. so one of persipan's frequent brief concerns is probably "oh shit.... what if i run into my necromancer ex at the pharmacy......"
(i think i originally had persipan as a clerk working for heartsease, but i'm deciding now that if that's still anywhere it's outdated, she's instead a clerk working for gillespie... who's kind of heartsease's rival so the situation still has the potential to be. interesting lol)

30?
ao3 wrapped questions here!! <- send some in? :D
30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?
I think it's a toss up between writing fewer fics overall in the entirety of this year than I did in the half of a year I wrote during last year and actually starting my long term wip Double Troubles lol
I got really disheartened by the fact that it looked like I was writing less this year, especially since I haven't really been doing anything else like I should have been doing, but then I remembered that for most of the year, I've been focusing on Julia Burnsides vs Canon Lore and then also Double Troubles for a short stint when I decided to write down my thought and some scenes for that. I haven't actually checked to see how much I've written this year that I just haven't published, so it could very well be way more than last year, but I honestly have no idea yet lol
And as for starting Double Troubles, it was at first a not very well fleshed out daydream I had for a long a while that I kind of slowly put aside that I never thought was going to get written down, let alone seen by other people, because I didn't think there would be an audience for an OC 8th bird fic and the OC is a self insert and the whole mortifying ordeal of being known and whatever, but @institute-of-planar-shitposts is writing her self insert OC 8th bird fic and shared a lot of her ideas and stuff with me and on tumblr (which you can find under my "Sunshine tag! :D" and idr if Sunny tagged her Sunshine posts with a specific tag, but you can find more information about her in her pinned post) and I thought it was really fun and cool, and she seemed to be having a lot of fun with it, and I thought the whole concept of Meadow was a really cool idea that I didn't really want to just leave to oblivion, so I told Sunny about it, and she encouraged me to write it, so now it's a thing! lol
Oh! I should also just mention this here since I brought it up, and I think you probably don't know much about either, you can find more information and passages I've shared for Julia Burnsides vs Canon Lore and Double Troubles under the tags "Julia Burnsides vs Canon Lore" and "Double Troubles"
I need to update my pinned post promoting those tags and other frequently used tags that could be helpful for people looking for specific content lol

I'd like to keep this blog for just my au, so if you want to talk with me about spn or pjo not related to this au or anything else, please feel free to hop over to the corresponding side blog or my main!!!!!!
I'll come back and edit this if I remember anything else I want to add!!
And now,
Demons and Demigods Background!
Some warnings/preface before I get into the actual au: I have a potty mouth and therefore so do the characters. I love using the fuck word.
As the blog title states, I do put the characters through The Horrors arguably worse than canon. So. Please keep that in mind, also I am a big fan of dark!percy and making demigods a little eldritched (mostly percy tho) so expect a lot of morally gray (at the very least) actions on Percy's part and violence and gore more spn canon level than pjo canon level
Also, I do fuck around with timelines as I wish even if it doesn't make much sense bc I am the god of this world and Chuck's got nothing on me 😈
I make a number of changes to how spn s1 plays out and also smush the entirety of spn seasons 1 , 2, and most of 3 into the ~8-10 months during which hoo takes place. Like I said, I fuck severely with the timelines.
This au starts in the time between tlo and tlh where Percy has just gone missing, and picks up right after the pilot for spn
I haven't made it that far yet, but this au will be Destiel bc I'm down bad <3
Anyway,
Sally is Mary's younger sister. They were always close growing up, and both decided to quit hunting.
Percy is six years younger than Sam! (Sam is 22 in the pilot, and Percy is 16 when he goes missing.)
Percy disappears and Annabeth tells Sally that he's missing right after Jess dies. Oops. (Yes, I know the timelines don't match up but I don't care <3)
Everything else I'll get too into, so I'll post the rest of the set up separately!
I have some scenes fully written for this au and a lot of hand-wavey transition shit written down, too.
I'll work on getting what I've got so far posted over the next couple of days!
As I get stuff posted, I'll tag all fully written scenes with #dndv scenes and anything involving world-building or any kind of lore will be tagged with #dndv lore ! If I get any asks abt the au, they'll be tagged #dndv asks alongside #dean/eliot answers . All posts about the au involving plot or storyline at all will be tagged with #dndv and #demons and demigods verse . Anything like progress updates as I'm working on the next part will be tagged with #dndv behind the scenes
I'll include those tags in this post for ease of use, and if I decide to use other specific tags, I'll add them here as well!

I used to do a lot of novella style text rp, first on Skype and then Discord, with people I picked up from mostly reddit, rarely here, and occasionally on Barbermonger. It wasn't because of ghosting that I quit looking. Ghosting is a frustrating inevitability of the process. It was mostly because of conflicting expectations. You see, to me there are two primary groups of rpers: storytellers and fuckers.
Storytellers want there to be a plot with a planned ending and for the characters to, if not change over it, do some interesting stuff during it.
Fuckers want to get their character laid.
There are a lot more fuckers. Sometimes they overlap. I would rp with both despite being largely in the story category because I'm aegosexual and I don't care if the characters bang or not, or in what combo of genders/sexualities. I would be looking for a good writer first, and if that meant I would be writing sex scenes, fine, sometimes those are hot. I've always loved writing dialogue and relationships, and romance and sex is a subtype of that.
The fact that I'm indifferent to my character's sex, gender, and orientation means I've written men and women both. (I always said that I'd happily play third genders, but no one asked.) I would ask partners up front what they preferred, they usually wouldn't admit it, and then I would pick the opposite gender to their stated irl one because most were straight people. People wanting queer relationships were more likely to write or respond to queer prompts, so that usually worked out. Playing gay women with a straight man was my least favorite, but in their defense, a lot of straight women wanted to play absolutely the worst yaoi twinks imaginable, and I didn't love that either.
To be clear, I love bottoms and subs; I'm a top who will reluctantly switch occasionally. My problem with these specific situations was that they ended up with me topping for characters who wouldn't exercise any agency in the story. They would want to be dragged everywhere. They wouldn't introduce lore. They wouldn't describe a room, let alone an interesting conflict or antagonist. What happens next? My character is the bottom, so it's not my problem! I asked someone to help me write a conflict once and they wrote, "then they fought some bandits, killed them, and moved on." Great. Thanks. I'll write with the bitchiest high maintenance brat in the universe before I'll write with a dead fish.
So you're probably wondering what's wrong with me that I haven't mentioned yet, like a perfect rp ad with suspicous adjectives in the partner description (open-minded towards what??). I'm a monsterfucker, kind of. I didn't care what species the other person was. I wanted to play nonhumans or humans that are altered. The closest I've come to playing a regular human was a woman with a red mutant eye she hid under a patch, and a human man with some severe scars from surviving a plague.
Basically picture a woman whose characters are never regular hot humans, who doesn't care which genitals they have, but does care intensely about story and grammar. I also wrote OC only, meaning we'd both make up characters rather than, say, the other writer playing Guilliman and me playing Yvraine or vice versa. I preferred original universes, but would write in Warhammer 40k, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls, all settings with broad, deep, relatively complicated lore.
Already you can see why it usually took me a while to find partners. I was about ninety degrees off from what most rpers wanted or were interested in, and I was picky as Hell. Frankly it's amazing I found as many partners as I did. I would end up talking at cross purposes a lot, because the other writer was focused on how to get the characters rubbing their bits together while I was trying to figure out how we get to the city where the big multispecies council happens. Eventually I found people who could do both, but I had to take the attitude toward rp ads that some men take toward dating, where you fire something off a hundred times to get one reply. Except I had it easier than straight men trying to date, because I would get at least one reply of some kind to most ads. Oh, and I'm also absolutely insufferable, if this essay so far has failed to make that clear. Like just a huge fucking twit. This has been less of an obstacle than you might suppose.
The sock puppet people were pretty funny when they were obvious. OC Only in an ad weeds out the people who want you to be Loki or Widowmaker so their horrible self-insert can knock boots, but I would still run across prompts that were very obviously someone looking for dubcon daddies and trying not to admit that directly. Originally I didn't understand why they wouldn't just say what they wanted. I eventually learned it was because actual erotic rp sites are revolting, and they were hoping to recruit someone without a lot of existing gross fetishes who would service their fetishes instead. They definitely wouldn't think of it this way. I think they probably were thinking something more like "can't we just have fun without it having to be about (X thing I'm super not into)?"
Normalcy is a shaky concept on the internet, my friends.
In the end, it ended up being easier and more fun to write and publish my own stories most of the time, whether as a novel no one reads on Kindle or a series of erotic and non erotic stories several people read on AO3. (The erotic ones get more views. By like, a lot.) I still write with a couple of friends, but I can't see myself doing public rp ads again. It's not just that I'm too old, although I really am at this point. I think the fact is that roleplay is different from writing, and I've never been very good at it.

What's your top 5 series with excellent worldbuilding? Read your previous ask about k project and now I'm curious lol
Lol I don't know if I can decide on a top 5. it really depends on my mood at the time and the kind of AU I want to write since that's a huge part of why I love worldbuilding, they make for very fun writing.
But I guess if I had to name some with the kind of worldbuilding/system I like to revisit, KHR is definitely way up there, can this series even exist without the flame lore worldbuilding that the fandom has built up? XD It works so well in-universe as well as in crossovers/fusions, and it's perfect for writers to throw in their own take on how flames work.
You mentioned the K-Project ask so I have to mention that here too, the king system in that world is lovely, with a side of royalty AU vibes. I haven't written anything for it yet but I definitely want to one day.
Youzitsu would probably be another one, I love the whole cutthroat high school competition environment thing they've got going on, and it can get even darker than canon while still being perfectly believable.
Alice in Borderland is excellent, but it's not necessarily that series specifically, although it is very good. But it's more the survival/death game genre that I really like, so stuff like Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint or The Earth is Online, etc. would work too.
And I can't talk about worldbuilding without slapping down The Magnus Archives, oh my god that series, I don't even listen to podcasts but that one hooked me in from episode 1. I actually haven't finished it, life got busy so I left it on the wayside and haven't gotten back into yet, but the worldbuilding is fucking gorgeous. It's the kind of horror I love, with an apocalyptic spin, and the lore is just so well done. Like, I don't actually care about any of the characters that much, which is rare for me, usually I have like a fav character or ship, but for this series, I am 85% in it for the worldbuilding alone. I also haven't written anything with this as a basis yet but it's def on the list.
Anyway, that's 5. I could name plenty of others, from the common popular series like Harry Potter to much less known ones, there's so many out there to play with.

So... random question, but any HCs for Mrs. Afton? We know she was named Charlotte and she wanted to keep her sons and she passed away from what sounded like some kind of illness, but what else is there?
Very little beyond that, actually. Charlotte was going to be changed to Elise for LS (and I'd have to change the other mentions of her too.) She and Max had the same eye color, Alexander got her smile, Henrietta had her laugh. Little painful things like that. I'm leery of adding ocs in my fics without good reason, and I never felt there was enough from canon/lore to really find a place for her. (Bear in mind I haven't read any of the books/written stuff except for the first two novels.)
However, Last Shift's epilogue WAS going to go in a VERY different direction, but I didn't want people to draw the conclusion she was haunting the Marionette, (esp with Lies Within's characters) which was super easy to assume based on what little I'd written, as well when one took into consideration one of it's over-arcing "the dead don't die until..." theme. You can read the scrapped scene below:
A young man sat back from his work, running a hand through dark blonde hair and hemming and hawing over the finishing touches.
“Don’t you look marvelous,” The man peered through his glasses, and smirked as he pretended not to notice the creak of a door.
“…daddy?”
“What do you think?” He turned around, holding out the slender, black animatronic, it’s limbs dragging uselessly since it wasn’t hooked up to anything yet.
The young girl eyed the strange creature, then her father, and scrunched her nose critically.
“…no?” Henry hummed, sitting back and guiding the wooden puppet carefully back so that it sat upright. Sort of.
“I think it looks weird. What if Goldy and Springy are mean to it, because it’s different?”
Henry sat back, looking puzzled. Part of him knew the truth—the AI’s recognition wouldn’t matter too much yet. Everything was still so new to the two animatronics on the stage.
“Well, he’ll be mostly sitting at the Prize Counter. We needed someone new, someone helpful though. here, come closer, meet the Prize Puppet good n’proper. Those two are friendly enough, I don’t think they’ll tease the little Puppet too much.”
Charlotte shrugged, but wandered closer.
“its smile sure is big.”
“Doesn’t he look happy?”
“I guess…”
Henry chuckled. Well, he’d asked her opinion. Out of the mouths of babes…
“It needs make up. To make it prettier.” Little Charlotte piped up. “Like how Auntie Elise always had such pretty lipstick?”
“What color, same as hers?” Henry chuckled sadly, already reaching for his bright ruby paint. “Charlotte, remember what I said. Try not to say her name too much, especially at the diner, dear.”
“Sorry, daddy…”
“It’s quite alright. It’s going to take getting used to for all of us. But it’s especially hard on the boys, and on Henrietta, and of course on Uncle Will.”
“…why can’t I say her name? I miss her, too.” His daughter asked quietly, leaning on the worn desk as she eyed the long, awkward limbs of the strange animatronic designed to give the prizes out.
“Well, sweetie, it’s just…painful. It’s easier if we avoid reminding them about losing her. Like how we tell you kids not to lift a band aid before the cut’s all sealed, right?” Henry spoke without looking up from his current project, as he so often did. “Same basic principle. I know it seems strange, but trust me. It’s what’s best.”
“Oh. Okay.”
Charlotte stood on tip toe, watching to make sure her father painted the bright, vibrant red correctly, in a way that would have made her Aunt proud.
But she was careful never, ever, to speak the name again. She didn’t want to hurt anybody, after all. Especially not her family.
“…Why are its eyes black?”
Henry chuckled. Kids…
