On the topic of fucked up back, mine does this fun thing were the small joints connecting ribs to spine lock up, usually when I’ve been doing something horribly strenous like sit on the couch. I was told by a doctor that it might be inconvenient, but it’s not life threatening, so there’s that at least.
The trouble is, when ever my back locks up, I start throwing up, and can’t keep anything - including pain meds - in. So last year I has to visit the ER three times to get a painkiller / muscle relaxant as a shot. I have excercise instruction from a physical therapist, and have been working out for a while now.
So far it hasn’t helped that much, and last saturday evening my back locked up so bad that I couldn’t get up from the floor, and my partner had to call an ambulance. Paramedics gave me the painkiller shot, and thank fuck that helped and I got to sleep on my own couch for the night.
Anyway, take care of your body, and if you’ve been wondering why I post very sporadically, this is the reason.

People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.
For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.
So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.

Creative dreams abound
I remember wanting to be a painter.
That dream was rather short-lived, quickly and quietly choked by the laughter of grown-ups who, it seemed, could not help but remark "That certainly doesn't pay any bills!" and I stuck to my drawing and painting classes for two years before I quit, because I could not really see the point for it. There are a lot of things I could not see the point for as a child that I see a point for now, sadly. I know, intellectually, that it is not too late, but that is the problem. I know too many things intellectually, which I then never bother to translate. Translate actually (in the etymological sense, as in, translate into action.) my life is intellectualized, never acted.
I say this in the passive voice, as if I were not the one who had to act it out.
But I digress.
Another dream I had was to try pottery. Shaping the clay is also poetic, and there is a somewhat religious parallel to it (I do not love religion, at least the institution, but religious parallels are so powerful to me). In French, we say "façonner", and I don't know why this word fascinates me so much - maybe precisely because it's pronounced almost like "fasciner" (of which you guess the meaning). Giving your own designed shape to something immediately evokes the force of creation. You are God. The Creator. All powerful themes, the kind that makes your soul shake - or maybe just breathe.
I never took pottery classes. I had a look at the price and deemed them too expensive. Writing is truly the cheapest form of art, and I say this affectionately. Reading and writing are such simple activities and yet they are full of emotional value. Like the quote about art making you feel something - art is the communication of feelings from one (the artist) to another (the viewer). Where did I read that? I forgot. But the theory was that words can't always express what we feel, and art bridges that gap between us humans. I would argue that words are art, too (thinking of kanji and pictograms and hieroglyphs now, but I will go there some other time).
I will always remember my aunt telling me about a study where they analyzed underestimated factors that keep you alive for longer, and reading was one of the three top ones. (If you want to know, I am almost sure that plants/nature and interpersonal relationships were the two others.)
