ghosts play to the audience - really interesting song about creative integrity vs crowd-pleasing as an artist and the unclear boundary between the two. also about ghosts! and it bangs!

yozurina - a song about the uncertainty and attachment of long-distance love. dawn comes again...

vocaloid is lame - a melancholy song about dealing with haters of one's work that sort of turns into a classic pino-p "finding optimism in the midst of your sadness" thing. the high note on the astronaut line always makes me tear up a bit

everything about animals - duet between miku and pino-p himself! "there's tigers, horses, deer, working adults, livestock, monkeys, you who once raised your first cry..."

it's a festival, hey come on! - i only checked this one out recently because of the creative mixed-media mv and it took a while to grow on me but now i think the chorus is so catchy. flashing lights cw

tonchinkan feast - possibly the first of his songs i ever heard. kind of an oddball but i love the creative mv. my party trick is i can sing this from memory. if you listen to it you'll understand why it's a party trick

god-ish - i'm sorry vocaloid community for putting this one so far down the list i just thought of a bunch of other ones first. this one got so crazy popular it shows up in "all time miku songs" tribute art. kind of wild. i was there when it dropped, who'da known...

magical girl and chocolate - another recent one that got popular although not to the insane degree of god-ish. when i find a toku character to apply this to it's over for you guys

non-breath oblige - forgot about this one for a bit but it's so good it makes me emotional. wish it was humanly possible to sing

and i'm just gonna throw ultimate senpai, what's inside, kick ass literally, nee nee nee, and mushroom mother onto the pile real quick before this gets too long. you've already seen 404, apple dot com, what yama says goes, last continue, reincarnation apple and common world domination from my other post so i didn't write up a blurb for any of those but those are some classic favorites of mine too, especially the first three. i'm a controversy by ado - vocals by ado, written and produced by pino-p. aka THE FUCKING DREAM TEAM EVER. this song expresses ado's conflicted reaction to the controversy she's generated with the social criticism in her music. imo THEE best song to come out of the voca-p adjacent circle this year. mv goes hard too

(not) a devil - collab with deco*27, another insanely popular voca-p, possibly the most insanely popular one currently active. as you can imagine this one made quite a splash. i like duet collabs like this because you can hear the difference in how each artist tunes their miku. pino-p's muted soft-spoken miku ftw

gorgeous big conversation - collab with utsu-p, a less popular but still fairly big voca-p known for his signature heavy metal sound which you can hear in this song. i love the lyrics of this one they are silly and surreal, i wish this video was subbed. shoutout to internet comedian arufa who is the guy in the video, he also provided the human voice in anonymous m. you may know him from this video which got popular on tumblr

Slipknot - The End, So Far There are a bunch of people, mainly older, that would say that the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was the last true “rockstar,” but I would disagree, whether it’s because the term rockstar has changed over time or that there are musicians and bands from the last 20 years whose name sort of eclipses their music. Nirvana ended up becoming a band like that -- people buy their shirts all the time without knowing who they are, or if they do, they only know a couple of songs but think their logo is cool. There’s nothing wrong with that, but a great example of a band that came a little bit after them that has the same level of fame and notoriety is Slipknot. Yeah, sure, they’re a metal band, but they’re a band, like Nirvana before them, changed the face of rock and/or metal. Frontman Corey Taylor is a celebrity at this point. Even if you don’t know who he is, you know he’s the singer of Slipknot, and even if you don’t know Slipknot’s name, or their music, you’ve seen their logo somewhere. They’re one of the biggest metal bands in the world, right up there with Metallica. Their first two albums, 1999′s self-titled and 2001′s Iowa are records that revolutionized rock and metal, more specifically nu-metal and alt-metal, but there’s a lot of debate on whether or not Slipknot were a nu-metal band. I don’t think so, because they pulled from a lot of different sounds, but they had elements of it in their sound and helped to pioneer it, along with Korn and Deftones. I say all of this because it’s a big deal when Slipknot releases a new album. They’re one of those bands that everyone is going to be glued in, listening to what they’re doing now, because they have so many diehard fans (as well as a lot of people that hate everything after Iowa). Even if you don’t like them, whether at all or anymore, you’re still paying attention, most likely. I’m a couple of weeks late to this review, but I’ve been really excited to write it, as I’ve wanted to talk about the new Slipknot record, entitled The End, So Far. This isn’t their last album, so no need to fret, but their last album with longtime label Roadrunner Records, whom they’ve been with since 1999. This is also their first in three years, coming off the heels of 2019′s We Are Not Your Kind, which is an album I liked, but I didn’t love. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure I was going to listen to this, but something told me to check it out, because who knows, maybe it would be good. You never know if you don’t check it out, right? It’s been a couple of weeks, but a lot of that has been due to life getting in the way, thanks to getting married over the last few days, so I haven’t had time to review anything for the last four or five days, but I knew that this was the first review I wanted to write when I came back from our brief honeymoon, simply because The End, So Far isn’t just one of my favorite albums of the year, it’s also probably one of my favorite Slipknot albums. The End, So Far is an album that totally took me by surprise; I had no idea that I would love this album as much as I do, whether it’s because this is a late state Slipknot album, and Slipknot is a band that I’ve been spotty on. I love their first couple of albums, and everything else is hit or miss. On each album afterwards, there are songs I like and songs I’m not crazy about, but it’s because of how they’ve started experimenting with alt-metal, hard-rock, and progressive sounds and ideas over the years. This record is one of their most interesting albums to date, and it seems like people split down the middle -- people either love it or hate it. It took a few listens to really grow on me, but I can’t stop listening to it. The biggest reason that I’m really loving this thing is honestly because the band sounds great here. Every member is on fire, and the performances on here are incredibly tight, especially Corey Taylor. He’s one of those vocalists that just sounds better and better on each album. His vocal performance on this record is utterly fantastic. He’s got the best control of his voice, where he can passionately sing one second, but literally a second later in the same song, you hear his gnarly and beastly growls. He doesn’t skip a beat, and even on the few tracks I’m not as crazy about versus others, he sounds top notch. Taylor is one of the best vocalists in rock and metal today, period. I also really love how this album is a bit more experimental. Opening track “Adderall” is this six-minute slowburn that’s more on the post-punk / goth-rock / industrial feel, playing more with Nine Inch Nails than the nu-metal fury that they’re known for. It’s just Taylor singing, but it sounds awesome. I can see why that track might not grip a listener going into it, but it’s got my attention immediately, because it’s so weird and left-field for them, so I want to hear more. We get a lot more softer moments, such as “Yen,” “Acidity,” which has this blues feel to it, “Medicine For The Dead,” and a few other cuts. That’s not to say they don’t bring the rage, because on singles “The Dying Song” and “The Chapeltown Rag,” we get classic Slipknot. They’re heavy, brutal, and fun, but my favorite track on the album is also the heaviest and most vicious, which comes in the form of “H377.” but it’s a doozy. That might be one of the heaviest Slipknot songs I’ve ever heard. I can’t get enough of that song. That’s also one of the heavier tracks that doesn’t feel like a stock Slipknot song, and that is my biggest complaint here, that the songs we get that are more in the vein of classic Slipknot are just typical Slipknot. “H377″ is a cool song, because it transcends their sound, but still being brutal and heavy, whereas the singles are just standard Slipknot and nothing more. They’re great songs, but they do nothing I haven’t heard before, even though they do it well. The End, So Far is one of my favorite albums of the year, despite it being an hour long (I don’t know if it needed to be an hour, but it doesn’t really feel like it, especially by the end when I realize I’m on the last song), because it merges Slipknot’s heavier side with a softer and more experimental one. They place both sides of their sound pretty evenly on the album, but I have seen a lot of people say that this just sounds like (Corey Taylor’s other band) Stone Sour. I don’t agree with that comparison at all, because they still bring the house down, whereas Stone Sour doesn’t, so the heavy stuff is still here. Just because it has some soft moments doesn’t negate the heavy ones. I can understand some of the discourse behind this album, especially the heavy songs being more standard cuts, but the experimental stuff is what I like most. The heavy stuff is great, too, and a few of the heavy songs are some of my favorites, but I love when the band gets weird. It shows that after 20+ years, they’re still willing to experiment and not just make the same album over and over again. You’ve probably already heard this album, but if you haven’t, it’s worth hearing. I haven’t been into Slipknot for awhile now, but this is the album that got me back into the fold. I’ve been playing their first two albums again a lot, and those albums still rule, but it’s cool hearing their older material versus their newer material.

Etienne’s Top Fives of 2022: Kpop Edition - Soloists

Moving on to my next post in my top fives! In general, I’m not as in to soloists as I am groups just as a rule. One of my favorite things in music is use of harmony and voices working together, and that’s just something that groups are better suited to than soloists (and why a lot of my favorite songs of soloists are ones where they feature someone). That being said, the solists that I am into, I tend to be very into.

The category of soloists is going to consist of people who are (at least these days) purely soloists, and any members of a group where either their group did not have a body of work as a group this year or I only enjoy them as a soloist and not as part of the group. Someone who is debuting as a soloist but has previously been active in a group doesn’t count as a rookie for me, so all my soloists are in this list.

Here’s a shoutout to the soloists that made my preliminary lists, but didn’t make it to the top five list (in approximately the order that I ran into their music this year): Woodz (”I Hate You”), Yein (“Plus N Minus”), Lee Sujeong (“My Name”), and Choi Suhwan (“Chance”).

5) Ryeowook

Ryeowook’s mini album, including “Hiding Words” (above) and “Bluebird” (https://youtu.be/fDIi1XFUWMs) was an amazing showcase of his voice. While he still participates in Super Junior comebacks as they happen, I pretty much only follow his solo career of the still active Super Junior members. His voice is beautiful and really captures his preferred genre’s emotions so well. I do appreciate the sort of magical realism of the MV for “Bluebird” though, and dithered over which one to pick as the representative song. In the end, “Hiding Words” is my favorite for how incredible his vocals are here.

4) Ryu Sujeong

I am so excited for a few of my Lovelyz biases to be starting to release solo music post Lovelyz that I actively like! Yein is in my honorable mentions above (as is Lee Sujeong who wasn’t one of my Lovelyz biases but had an excellent song anyhow), but Ryu Sujeong’s “Pink Moon” (above) was definitely my favorite solo release from a Lovelyz member post leaving Woolim. It really showcases the versatility of her voice and a direction that her style could be going as a soloist. Definitely looking forward to what she does next!

3) Lee Chaeyeon

I was so excited for Chaeyeon to finally have her solo debut! While I’d been hoping for her to eventually re-debut in a group post Iz*one because I feel like she really thrives in a well balanced group environment, I’m pretty happy with this album and MV. I was able to listen through to the album several times after it released and found it enjoyable and noticed new things each time. I love her voice, I think that the overall concepts present in the album and MV suited her, and most of all, I was relieved she was doing things again. Many of the songs off the album went on various of my playlists, and I do come back and listen to a lot of them just to listen to that song. I think that “Danny” (https://youtu.be/GOP_bBJ1pOo) also deserves a special mention here for having incredible storytelling based choreography that really captures my interest to go along with an awesome song.

2) Chungha

Chungha’s “Sparkling” really did a good job of showing off her voice and is yet another song and MV in her growing list that show off how versatile as a dancer and vocalist she is. She’s got such a nice voice, and this release is catchy. She’s such an amazing performer, and as I always, her releases make me want to see what she will do next along with really appreciating her current work.

1) Changmin

A thing that a lot of incredible vocalists in Kpop don’t have yet is vocal maturity, and Changmin’s “Devil” is really showing off just how complex and interesting Kpop gets when you have vocalists into their thirties who are really getting into the strength and maturity and richness of their voices. Very few vocalists in their teens and early twenties could execute this even a fraction as well, Changmin couldn’t have executed this even remotely this well in the early stages of his career, and I’m glad that he’s stuck around long enough to give us this incredible song. His voice is so rich, and he’s exploring new styles to him that showcase that. I am really hoping that we keep getting incredible solos from him that showcase that vocal maturity and richness.

While I’m not generally as into soloists as I am into groups, feel free to recommend things to me! I’m sure that I’ve missed people that I would really enjoy.

5. Luka is my least favorite vocaloid. I liked Dreaming Chuchu tho. It's just that no one knows how to tune her. Mitchie M does but he barely uses her sob u_u

6. Meiko’s voicebank is kinda bad. Not apologizing for this her only good songs are Nostalogic and Evil Food Eater Conchita.

7. Bye Bye Blue Memory and Aizu～会津～ are severely underrated songs and everyone should listen to them.

8. Mitchie M is the only valid Miku user.

9. LenMiku is slightly better than RinMiku. I'm not apologizing for this.

10. We need more GuMiku content.

you've been in the voca scene a really long while, so do you have any songs from when you first got into it that are still bangers despite your taste changing over time?

yeah!!! although for the most part what i listened to when i got into it were the popular songs at the time. or at least semi-well known.

kemu's pandora voxx songs are still up there on my fave songs list especially rokuchounen, reincarnation, and ikasama life game.

i also still have a special place in my heart for the shuuen no shiori project songs despite not being active in the fandom the past few years. sarumane isu tori game is literally how i came up with my url. d-ne my beloved. theres a part in the ia ver of the song towards the end that always sounded similar to when u blow into a straw i always thought that was neat. arikitari heroes is still my most listened to song in my life. song i listened to for like a month straight if not more (+ multiple weeks on & off. for months.) Back In The Day & still have trouble turning off if i put it on.

i also adore old mafumafu songs adagaeshi syndrome was my first & still goes hard & kakushigoto & yuugure semi nikki are still songs i listen to frequently. kuusou sekai to omocha no shinzou was also something i latched onto heavily. also as the resident aoki lapis fan im required to tell u mafu owns her & has used her exactly Once in an album only song toumei palette which thank u for reminding me i think i'll go listen to that now

now the one producer i miss SOOO much who also deleted most of their works is sekaikeiP or #n/a. their songs are. loud. to say the least u will want to turn ur volume down for all but one of them but i HIGHLY recommend sekaikei shoujo wa dennou sekai wo oyogu which is my second fave song of theirs so im super glad its still up. it gets stuck in my head frequently. there was no translation for this when i found it so i tried doing it myself & it went poorly so its a really cool feeling to go from completely not understanding to being able to understand most of it without double checking anything. but i digress. also highly recommend muhyoujou shoujo to yume miru kusuri. again volume warning. solid song tho & this one does have a translation if i remember right. the last one no longer has an official upload anywhere HOWEVER its my favorite of all their songs so i'm breaking my own rules & linking a reupload here. shounen A to mousou shoujo. this one has a normal volume btw its the one thats not super loud. absolutely devastated they didnt keep this up it was one of their more popular songs too. i drew fanart for it & they found it & followed me bc of it. good times. this producer's been missing since 2015 but i still think of them fondly.

debated leaving him off bc of the drama around szm but i. legitimately have no clue if new fans know szm's songs. the idol series of songs are iconic of course. undead enemy as well. personally i also really liked jinrui gofun mae kasetsu. there was a period of time i drew a lot of the girl in the video.

- i headcanon the vocaloids as humans (rather than androids or computer programs) alongside tht most project diva pvs r canon and would be actual music vids for them

-kaito is a REALLY good actor. he invests himself in any characters hes given & since he plays more srs roles he can come off as kinda intimidating to ppl who dont know him.. he has a hard time breaking character in costume

-luka is the quietest of the group.. shes also the most snarky. its hard to tell when shes being serious or not

-meiko used to be a wild card when she was younger (drunk a lot, kaito has some good stories) but shes mellowed out and become more responsible since meeting the other loids

- this would technically be more of an au but kaito and funkbeat r brothers in my mind cuz i think its funny.. theyd have a good dynamic

Coffee mugs I think. I have a pretty big collection of those.

2. chocolate bars or lollipops?

This one is hard! Probably chocolate bars though.

3. bubblegum or cotton candy?

Cotton candy 100%.

4. how did your elementary school teachers describe you?

Hmmmm, I think hardworking and sweet came up a lot? I was very much a teacher’s pet and the perfectionist anxiety set in early lol so I was a busy, over-achieving bee.

5. do you prefer to drink soda from soda cans, soda bottles, plastic cups or glass cups?

I prefer soda bottles. Glass bottles especially.

6. pastel, boho, tomboy, preppy, goth, grunge, formal or sportswear?

It really depends? But I guess I’m more tomboy style than anything else.

7. earbuds or headphones?

Earbuds because I like to have one in and one out so I can still hear what’s going around me.

8. movies or tv shows?

TV shows because I like having more time to get to know the characters (and domestic/casual situations for overpowered or zany characters are way more likely to happen in a show than a movie and I live for those lol).

9. favorite smell in the summer?

Rain on pavement because it just storms and storms in the summer and it’s so nice.

10. game you were best at in p.e.?

Hmmm I was good at anything that involved running? And games that involved those wheely board things you sat on and scooted around on were always fun.

11. what you have for breakfast on an average day?

It varies? Bagels or toast most often I guess.

Kinds of crystals I presume? I’ve always liked rose quartzes and amethysts (especially amethyst geodes since I have a couple of those).

Probably something from Tarzan or Mary Poppins since those were my childhood movies. So Stepping Time from Mary Poppins would be a good guess.

Swimming.

Walking around in it because it’s hardly ever truly cold here and I like to savor it.

I change music taste every five minutes so I’m going to say songs that describe me right now are brand new by ben rector, just a quail by louie zong, turning out by ajr, everything stays by olivia olson, and hooked on a feeling by blue swede.

It’s all in the time. I get attached to people pretty easy as long as they’re nice and we can goof around, have fun, and talk about whatever. So putting time in to hang out means a lot to me.

30. places that you find sacred?

Hmmm, being deep in forests feels sacred to me so there are certain waterfall hikes in the smokey mountains and along the blue ridge parkway and in Hawaii that seem very special to me. And then disney world and disneyland will always have a sacredness to them for me because they’ve meant so much to me and the happiness it brings people is pretty magical.

My comfy jean shorts and either my yellowish flannel or my guardians of the galaxy shirt with my rebel jacket.

Some kids in elementary did something weird in the trees behind our school because the teachers weren’t watching them (I never knew exactly what it was but it was Bad tm) but the teachers didn’t know exactly who it was so they punished the whole grade and we were forced to only play kickball during recess for like 7 months and it was the worst. It’s not exactly weird per say but I always found it wild that the only conceivable thing they could think to do to solve this problem was force a bunch of scrawny, socially awkward, miserable children to play ground baseball with a permanently half-deflated rubber ball.

Pants pockets but only because I don’t get to use jacket pockets as often as I would like to.

Baggy t-shirt and athletic shorts.

I don’t know about the hardest I ever have (because I am very lucky and have a very funny family so I laugh a lot) but watching vine compilations for the very first time with my siblings made me laugh really hard.

Fitting everything in. Days just don’t feel long enough and social situations plus school stuff always get to me but I’m doing okay.

I do like times new roman even if it’s used a lot but I’ve been using the font yananeska for calligraphy stuff lately and it’s a cool one.

They’re always a bit dry and on the warmish side but they’re pretty good.

Have never had a job job but I volunteered in a library for like three years and it taught me to enjoy the details, slow down and enjoy the quiet, simple tasks, appreciate really excited kids, and try to help people whenever I can.

Aladdin or beauty and the beast I suppose? I like that there’s multiple ways to interpret those stories and that they can be played with in some fun ways because they’re such interesting concepts by themselves.

56. favorite tradition?

How cities all over the world string up lights on things in the winter. It means something different to everyone and some do it and some don’t which is totally fine, but this idea of lighting up the world during the bleakest month, and how some people go all out with colors and patterns and synced to music, and how everyone does it a bit different, and how entire cities are just smothered in lights means a lot to me. I think it’s a very cool and very human thing to do.

57. the three biggest struggles you’ve overcome?

The tough year before my family moved, getting through my really intense anxiety years where I couldn’t travel in cars for more than fifteen minutes without throwing up, and my month away at art school.

58. four talents you’re proud of having?

Hmmm, I guess I’m pretty proud of my writing ability, my singing voice, my art skills, and my ability to talk to anyone.

And it inevitably put me at the school I’m at now which I’m very very happy with and suits me so much better.

1. All-time favorite Vocaloid song?

cowardly montblanc... iconic. not only is it gumi rights but also its probably still one of my favs to sing every now and then. im even trying to learn the romaji but thats. been a field day and a half osihfisdjfskdf. lie is definitely a close 2nd as well bc its one of the first songs that made me genuinely like vocaloid and ive had the lyrics to that song memorized for uhh quite a few years now too.

14. Favorite song in terms of story?

this one would be very easy to just give a kagepro or evillious song response to but i feel like its easier for those songs since they are there own series.

that being said i think at least at the moment i think two breaths walking and android girl are excellent in that area. i could not tell u what the story is myself still but i think its kind of inch resting

15. Favorite song in terms of PV?

this one also killed me because god there’s so many good ones so i’m gonna say fuck it and go with one that i remembered thinking was kinda neat back in the day even though its nothing over the top. Let’s guess the positions. If Yang Yang is main rapper, and dancer what is everyone else? I think Lucas is centre, visual, FOTG, lead rapper? But he might be a main too. Ten, we already know is a main dancer, vocalist, & rapper. Kun.. leader? And vocalist. XiaoJun is a vocalist, maybe a main vocal? And then there’s Hendary; he’s like the Kun of the lucky 3; don’t know anything about him because he doesn’t have enough hard stans all up in his business 😔

ok this is the second time i am trying to write and publish this, let’s hope it works. so i see your points, but i have a few different opinions regarding their positions. let’s go by age order, shall we? first of all, kun. kun, is for sure the leader. like. he is the leader. guys. believe me. there are multiple reasons why he is the only one really qualified for that position. here are two. first of all: he is chinese. i think that having anyone, who isn't chinese, be a leader of a chinese group in china, will turn out really problematic because china is known to be quite patriotic. also the qualities of a leader include being able to articulate your thoughts well. to be able to speak and express yourself really well. during nct 2018 promotions, whenever they went to an award show or just a red carpet appearance and someone needed to speak chinese, it was always kun who was in charge (whenever he wasn’t there, it was winwin) so like it’s…quite obvious, right? also he implied it himself when asked but whatever. anyway, i also believe kun is the main vocal. his voice is really unique. it’s really really high. highter than any other nct member’s voice, i believe? and assuming that taeyong let kun sing his song switch off, because of his beautiful voice, i’d say main vocal for sure because taeyong usually lets doyoung sing his songs only because he’s said that his voice is his favorite, so kun’s must be his second favorite. and he’s also sang without you chinese version and i know, i know, jaehyun isn’t a main vocal but more so lead vocal and he was still singing a big part of the song but AND CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG i believe jaehyun isn’t a main vocal solely because he can’t sing high notes really well, i guess? honestly, i dont know but yeah: i believe kun is a main vocal. now that was long. to the next member: ten. ten is main dancer for sure and seeing how ten is the one they start off the videos with, i wouldn’t be surprised if he was center, though, i have my beliefs that it would be someone else if there is even someone who will be the center in the end (i hope not but yeah). aside from that, it’s clear that ten is the lead vocal and rapper, but i do believe more so lead vocal. now to winwin. my precious wingwing. i am so anxious for him. i really want to say center, but due to past experience, we all know how sm loves to treat winwin. i really hope for some improvement regarding his treatment in lines and screen time..and i also believe someone else is more qualified to be a center…so i guess sub everything. LUCAS!!! xuxi i love you but you are not the center! there i said it. many believe he is. i dont. after long thought…it just doesnt seem right. he is…too tall to be a center. zelo from bap once said that he could never be a center because of his height and…yeah, no, it doesn’t seem…right? but he is a visual for sure. they haven’t put him in the middle for nothing. it’s in order to show off his face! also, believe he is a lead rapper…his rap isn’t bad and sm treasures lucas a lot, so they will make sure he will get his spotlight. xiaojun? easy. a main vocal. looking back at his singing career prior to wayv and his singing ability in 2015…just wow!! and he must have improved so much since then. i don’t know about dance or rap, but can i just say his smile is really attractive? hendery, we don’t know too much about this fella. but considering his deep voice in his smrookies introduction video, i assume he is a rapper. i always have thought so to be honest. maybe he and yangyang are the main rappers and if he is a voca,l i will be shocked, though, thinking back to stray kids’ felix and his stable vocals but hard rapper voice, i maybe shouldnt be if it turned out this way with hendery too. now to the last one and the one who seems to be perfect for any position really. now assuming this rumor or article is true and he is the main rapper and main dancer…WELL, FIRST OF ALL, I AM REALLY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED but like…he comes off to be a great vocal too, right. his voice is really soothing, so he’d be capable of anything i believe. yangyang’s got a lot to him and that’s why i also believe that he’s the most qualified to be the center. usually it’s the main dancers or good dancers in general (people who learn the choreography well and are flexible) that are the center. and as much as i want to say wayv is a group who is not capable of having JUST ONE CENTER…sm really loves to have one main person at the front. i mean looking back at their other groups…there is shinee with taemin, exo with kai, red velvet with irene and even nct themselves with taeyong and mark. that’s why i said i wouldn’t be surprised if it was ten, because of height and his main dancer quality, but i really do believe yangyang will be the main in this case. however, i really don’t know if his taiwanese ethnicity will somehow hold him back from this position because of…obvious reasons but sm has always been sure to include the german side of his chinese-german nationality and i believe this will be the main focus of his national identity and therefore prevent a situation like jyp’s tzuyu’s scandal in 2016 or was it 2017 idk?? but whatever nothing is confirmed and we should all take everything with a grain of salt until further confirmation.

“Abuela, it’s not that high,” She assures her.

“Silencio! ¡Se ayudas!” Mrs. Reyes orders.

“Si, abuela,” Milagro goes to help her friend.

“Am I doing something wrong?” Mar’i whispers. Milagro smiles a little to comfort her friend. Mar’i more than anyone understands how important festivals and the traditions within them are.

“No, princessa. She’s always like this. Especially after my bisabuela died.” Milagro adjusts a few of the candles and turns to her grandmother,” Abuela, mira por favor. Es bueno, ¿sí?”

“Sure, a-bu-wel-a,” Milagro can’t help the laugh as Mar’i walks to the kitchenette. Not in a mean way, never in a mean way, but of course her grandmother would make the half- alien non-native English speaker try to speak Spanish. The room is full of people, not unlike at her house, but there’s so much happening. Mar’i and her pseudo-brother pseudo-uncle Damian’s family are all there, making a ruckus and- is Jason pick pocketing Bruce? Jon and his parents chat happily with The Flash family. Her big brother Jamie rolls his eyes as Bart does something stupid. Milagro can’t help but shout at him,” Tu esposo es muy guapo, no, hermano?”

“Callate, pequena mocosa,” Jamie shouts back. Milagro laughs, then feels two strong arms wrap themselves around her waist.

“You having fun tormenting your brother, beautiful?” Colin asks, smiling against her cheek.

“Always. Did you put your picture on the ofrenda? My grandma will have your head if you don’t.” Milagro turns to face her boyfriend, wrapping her arms around his neck.

“Yeah, the nuns gave me the picture that was left with me…” Milagro hates seeing his sad face. She stands on her tiptoes to kiss his face.

“Oh, mi Corazon. We have each other. And you are more than welcome to share my crazy family.” Colin smiles and leans down to kiss her. He tries at least.

“INCOMING!!!” The couple falls to the ground as Irey West slams into them. Irey jumps up, running away at neck breaking speed, followed by her twin brother, now covered in lemonade, yelling swears at her in Korean.

“Weirdos.” Milagro grumbles. Colin laughs as he helps her up. They enjoy the celebration as much as they can. Given the several speedsters there, everyone had brought something to eat. They all trade stories about the people on the ofrenda and what they left. Mar’i, for the first time since most of them have known her, gushes about her mother and how much she loved to grow flowers. Her eyes water a little but it’s happy tears. Jai and Irey both talk about their Aunt Joan and Uncle Jay. How they were like an extra set of grandparents and the peanut butter cookies Aunt Joan made just for them. Milagro and her family laugh about her bisabuela and other family members.

Lian is quiet, resting her head against Jai’s shoulder. She’d lost her parents five months earlier and hasn’t completely recovered. Jai keeps kissing her hair and, a few times, wipes her eyes with his thumb. Jason doesn’t look happy about how close the two are sitting, but he doesn’t say anything. As the evening wears on and the food begins to disappear, the instruments come out. The musicians of her family play her bisabuela’s favorite songs. She and Colin dance together, her long skirt flying around their legs. He laughs as he spins her, both ignoring the protective glares from her male family members. If asked point blank, Colin would be the first to admit that she could kick his ass. But that’s just one reason he loves her.

Irey and Mar’i dance with her, all of them pulling Lian to join them. This is the part of being a hero they never talk about. Losing people. The scars it leaves. The guilt. The pain. But sometimes it helps to just have a distraction and celebrate the memories they made with the people that are gone. Lian manages a small smile as Jai dances with her. If just for a while, they all forget their worries and their pain. If just for a moment, everything is perfect.

Slowly, people head to bed until it’s just the four couples, Dick, and Jon Constantine. The younger heroes loved Constantine more than the older heroes did. He’s brash, sarcastic, and willing to do anything. Basically, he’s an asshole. Which all of them can understand. They chat about old missions and their families. Constantine keeps looking at Mar’i strangely and frowning.

“Is something wrong?” She asks after a while. Her legs are swung over Jon’s and she’s cuddled up to his chest.

“Yeah, yer ghosty there is givin’ me a headache, luv.”

“Ghosty?” Mar’i tilts her head,” What ghost?”

She turns her head as if she’d be able to see the specter. Constantine rolls his eyes,” You tell me, luv. She’s a tall thing with massive red hair and eyes like yers.”

Mar’i and Dick stop breathing. She pulls away from Jon and looks at Constantine,” Wh-What? Th-tha-that is im-impossible.”

“Nothing’s impossible this time o’ year. The veil between worlds is much thinner.” Looks at Dick,” Do ye’ know who the ghosty is?”

“It’s-I think it’s Kor’i, Mar’i’s mother. She-she died when Mar’i was little. That’s why Mar’i came to live with us.”

“Well, yer mum is nagging in my ear about wantin’ to talk to ye.” Jon feels Mar’i tense up. She’s blinking rapidly, trying to process what he’s saying to her.

“Can you do that?” Milagro asks,” Abuela says that the dead move on after some time.”

“I can do that. Her mum is a little easier than humans bein’ an alien. But Mar’i has to be the one to invite her here.” Constantine takes a swig of his whiskey. Mar’i looks at Lian. Since losing her parents, Lian and Mar’i have been closer than ever. Mar’i’s been able to provide insight that no one else their age can. They’d talked about wanting to see their parents one more time and what they would say. But now that the opportunity is here…

“Do it. Do what you need to.” Lian says softly. Mar’i nods and looks at Constantine.

“I-I want to talk to her.”

“Yea, put that together. Go stand over there.” He points to a spot in the middle of the room,” You too, Dick.”

Dick and Mar’i go to the middle of the room. She takes her father’s hand, shaking like crazy. Dick wraps an arm around her shoulder, holding her close. Constantine pulls a few jars from his bag, mixing the contents, and begins to chants in Latin,” spiritus, voca me audies. Rogamus dabis nobis tuo verum est forma. Quod illi visus non potest videre. Viventes semel contineat. Spiritus ostende te.”

He blows the powder on them. For a moment, it felt like all the air in the room has been sucked away. The lights flicker. Damian holds Irey a little tighter. Milagro bends over, Colin’s head in her lap, to shield their eyes. Lian, Jai, and Jon watch in awe, horror, and morbid curiosity.

When it’s over, the teens all look up. A tall, beautiful woman stands in the room. She has wild red hair that cascades down her back. Her green eyes are warm and soft as she smiles at Mar’i. They all know who she is. They’ve seen her pictures. But the soft white glow around her is unnerving. Mar’i looks stunned and slowly approaches the woman. The look on her face reminds Damian of the first time she met her father. The fear. The uncertainty. The need to be loved.

“M-mom?” Mar’i whispers. Kor’i smiles. She reaches out and touches Mar’i’s cheek, causing a shaky breath to rock her body.

“Look at you…you have gotten so big, bumgorf.” Mar’i tears up and throws her arms around her mother’s waist.

“Mom!” She sobs. Kor’i holds her daughter, stroking her curly hair. She looks at Dick.

“Hello, Dick… It has been too long…” Dick approaches her. He brushes his fingers against her cheek. She smiles a little wider,” I knew you would take care of her…”

“Why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant sooner?” He asks.

“Because I was scared,” Mar’i’s shaking in her mother’s arms,” it is alright, my star, it is ok.”

Mar’i looks at her and everything she’s ever wanted to say comes flooding out,” I miss you. I miss you so much every day. I miss your hugs. I miss you singing me to sleep. I miss cuddling you on lazy days. I miss gardening with you. I miss you, Mom.”

Mar’i is sobbing almost uncontrollably now. Kor’i wipes her tears away with her thumb,” I have missed you as well, starlight.”

“Why did you have to go?” Her friends feel slightly uncomfortable. As if they are intruding on a private moment. But none of them can bear to leave her alone, even if her father is with her. Kor’i doesn’t speak for a moment, pushing Mar’i’s hair from her face. Like she’s trying to find her little girl in the face of the young woman before her. She presses a soft kiss to her daughter’s forehead.

“My star…I was sick for much longer than I let on…but I fought for you. As long as I could. But X’hal called her to her side.” She wipes another tear away,” I wish she could have waited a little longer though. I feel as if I have missed so much of your life.” She smiles at Dick,” but I am happy you are with your father. That he has been here to protect you when I could not.”

“I wish you were still here…I wish we could have been a real family.” Kor’i rests her forehead on Mar’i’s. Mar’i closes her eyes, tears rolling down her cheeks. Dick presses a kiss to the top of his daughter’s, hugging her from behind.

“My beautiful, strong girl…If I could take all the pain in your heart away, I would. I am sorry my fears kept you from having the family you wanted.” Mar’i’s breathing is shaky. Kor’i presses a kiss to her nose,” Do you remember what I would tell you when you were scared? Jakeni proc th’am…”

“F’kun te thaan…” Mar’i looks up at her,” ‘from the flames, I rise again.’”

“Mar’i, you were the most precious thing in my life. From the moment I first felt you move in my womb…” Mar’i smiles a little,” You gave my life so much light and so much beauty. I loved each day watching you grow and watching you learn. And even in death, I have seen you at times.”

“R-really?”

Kor’i nods,” I have seen you when you needed me most. The first few months of your life here. Some dances that you have done where you wished I was there to see. Even a few times where you wanted me to see your friends.”

“Speaking of,” Mar’i wipes her eyes,” Mom, I want you to meet my friends.”

Her friends sit up. Jon looks a little freaked, but nothing really prepares anyone for meeting their significant other’s undead parent. Mar’i turns to her friends, sniffling.

“Mom, these are my friends. Milagro Reyes, Colin Wilkes, Lian Harper, Jai and Irey West.” She smiles at them.

“I remember you two.” She gestures to Jai and Irey,” You both were born about two months before I left for Tamaran.”

“Really?” The twins smile at that.

“Yes. If I remember correctly,” points at Jai, then Irey,” You won’t stop crying and you wouldn’t stop eating.”

Dick snorts,” Not much has changed.”

“Rude,” Jai rolls his eyes. Irey laughs.

“This is Damian Wayne, Grandfather Bruce’s son. He’s kind of my brother,” Then she looks Jon with a smile,” Mom, this is Jon Kent…he’s my…He’s the love of my life.”

“Oh really?” Kor’i smiles at Jon,” And has he gotten your father’s blessing?”

Mar’i laughs at the red blush on Jon’s face,” We haven’t gotten to marriage yet, Mom.”

“But if he asked, I’d give it to him.” That makes all of three of them laugh. Mar’i has a beautiful mixture of her parents laugh. Bright and warm and full of life. They all smile at that. Mar’i looks at her mom.

“You have to go, don’t you?”

“I fear so, my star,” Kor’i kisses her forehead. She smiles at her daughter,” I am so proud of the woman you have become. I love you so much.”

“I love you too. Mom…Can…can you sing to me before you go…please…”

“Of course,” Kor’i hugs her. Dick is hugging her from behind. Mar’i takes a deep breath, trying to enjoy the only hug she will ever get from both her parents. Kor’i sings softly to her in Tamaranean. She starts to fade away, pressing kisses to her hair. Mar’i takes a sharp breath when her mother disappears. Mar’i hugs her father, trying not to cry. Lian stands and walks over to her. Mar’i looks at her.

“Did you say what you need to?” Lian asks. Mar’i nods.

“Good. Don’t leave anything unsaid.” Lian’s voice breaks. Mar’i pulls her into a hug. The others stand and hug their friends.

“Happy day of the dead, mis amigos.” Milagro says.

what if i went off about some of my favorite songs ever

kyuuyaku hankagai - hiiragi magnetite: everyone knows i love this. i just love everything about it. we really get both sides of the picture story wise with it- both the fact the world is literally, physically getting destroyed, and all of the mental torment the characters are dealing with. it still has that magu series weird wording but it gets everything across that it needs to. the instrumental is just as heavy as the scenario with added dramatics in parts that really make it for me. all the long notes to simulate screaming. the seamless addition of both the nami no ne no & rute furute woa motifs (& a possible 3rd? theres still parts in here i cant figure out yet) makes me so emotional. if u have no idea about the series its still a solid song. 10000/10 i cannot fully express my love for this song in words i just need it on repeat full volume for weeks on end.

ai wo - null: impossible for me to explain why i love this so much without oversharing. i keep telling myself not to rank this song so high but ive never felt so seen before. null's lyrics are both poetic & still hit every raw emotion where it hurts. the whole being left alone ur whole life & wishing it wasnt that way, that everything wasnt so empty, that someone could love u the way u need & never got. i want everyone to hear this song and i also want to gatekeep it. it became so important to me in such a short time & itll be hard to ever rival it

arikitari heroes - 150suzu: im not immune to nostalgia. shuuenpro is executed entirely different to aru sekai series & i have to judge from entirely different criteria & that said i really always loved how this one sort of summarized the series in a way that highlighted all the strife in it & made it subjective rather than an objective summary. the chorus is so high its like theyre crying out which fits entirely. i still have the video embedded in my mind & its been a hot minute since ive watched it. my teenage self thought it was so deep & even with a different perspective now i cant entirely discount those feelings. anyway i still really love it i could still listen to it for weeks on end if i wasnt busy keeping up with other things. i do not say it lightly when i say this is the song i have listened to the most in my entire life i used to spend Months straight listening to it. beloved.

tachiiri kinshi - mafumafu: i was sooooooo normal about this in high school (lying). its still high on my list of breakdown songs. like damn its been 8 years and it still holds up the same. between this & ai wo that just gives away 90% of my problems. imagine solving isolation by letting people in cant be me. anyway i was obsessed with drawing the girl from the video for a while idk how many doodles i still have left but she was Everywhere on my school work. normal person behavior.

jishou mushoku - nekobolo: song that has pulled the most weight in keeping me alive. where would i be without it. sometimes the mood is so bad this is still the only thing i can listen to some days.

rokuchounen to ichiya monogatari - kemu: the real reason i fell down the voca rabbit hole. still adore the song & find it hugely nostalgic, but there was a reason i connected with it when i was younger & being able to recognize how fucked up that was makes it also a painful reminder id rather bury. song fucks tho love how every rhythm game its in will destroy u trying to play it.

konmei no aji - savasti: regardless of the real meaning of the song this will always be a dissociation song to me not in the sense it makes me dissociate but rather in the spaceyness & disconnect it reminds me of the feeling but in a safer way to deal with it. personally i prefer rire's cover

taishou x - yurry canon: u will appreciate this song now right now its so under appreciated for a yurry canon song. god the fucking "i'm still living the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. as it is i will never be you. theres no reason in living, but just the same theres no point in dying is there?" [punching a wall] i like it a normal amount

kaiko no kanmuri - dopam!ne: god this song fucks so hard and yet its still edgy. i dont even really know how to explain what i feel with this one beyond i love it. its a kind of waiting for the right time to strike for revenge kinda song? idk its my absolute fave dopam!ne song i love a lot of his songs but this one just really does it for me

haru no sekibaku - inaba kumori: kutabireta atashi ga dame dattan da ne. yeah. the overall mood of this song hits just right all too often. sorry lag train this is the defining inabakumori song to me.

hyperlexia - yamaji: the space in this one also gives me a sense of vague dissociation. i just really love the whole reading between the lines not going to fall for lies anymore mood its got going on. a misguided sense of personal revolution that probably wont end in anything meaningful but i particularly like the song.
