May Trope Mayhem is a multi-fandom/original creation event open to writers, artists, and creators of all kinds! We’ve put together a list of 30 of our favorite tropes (plus one free day!), one per day through the month of May, and we encourage creators to join us for this month of fun tropey mayhem.

Our goal is to promote motivation and help with habit building, so we’re encouraging authors to keep their ficlets under 1,000 words, artists to stick to making just a sketch, gif makers to only do a single image, etc., as applicable to whatever you’re making.

This event is primarily held on Tumblr, but you’re welcome to participate anywhere Duck Prints Press has an account (you can see all our current platforms here) and we’ll keep our eyes on our tag everywhere!

How can you participate? It’s easy! There’s just a few simple rules:

write a ficlet or a poem, create art, make a gif, or create any other content that you want, aligned with the prompt for the day!

post your correctly tagged fills to Tumblr, and we’ll reblog them! We’ll reskeet works on Bluesky, retoot those on Mastodon, you get the idea. Note: we do not use Twitter.

you must tag warnings such as gore, MCD, sexual content, etc., so that people can make informed decisions!

please also tag fandom and ship, so people can find what interests them!

we ask that you put the tags at the top of your post, so they’re easy to find.

if you write more than 1k words and post the whole text on Tumblr or wherever, please use a read more if the platform allows.

if you create something with NSFW content or potentially triggering material, please put the entire work under a read more.

Ping us (duckprintspress) or tag your creations “#may trope mayhem” and so we can find them! We’ll reblog all fills that follow the above rules and are posted between May 1st and June 8th, 2024.

gabe meets emma first semester of freshman year at boston college

he's taking a french class for fun even though he's fluent in french

him and emma end up next to one another for the class

at first, emma's not so sure about gabe since he acts kind of dumb in the class so the professor doesn't know he's fluent

that annoys her because she thinks it's stupid when people play dumb even though they're super smart

his athletic persona also throws her off a bit and she thinks he doesn't ever care at all because he's just forced to be in his classes to be able to play

they start talking after the first week of classes when gabe's actively doing another class's work

emma actively laughs out loud when she sees him trying to do economics

"something funny?"

she shakes her head and thus starts their mini whispering argument about economics

eventually that leads to gabe asking for her number to get help later on since emma claims she's so good at econ

after a few tutoring sessions emma realizes she might've been wrong about gabe all along

the two become close fairly quickly and he convinces her to come to one of his games that weekend

she starts learning a lot about hockey from gabe whenever he'd start rambling on about it during their tutoring sessions

finally after a month of tutoring gabe decides to ask her out on a date once the boys convince him she'd say yes

she agrees!

they go out to a fancy dinner where they're both pretty nervous it goes super well & gabe kisses her before dropping her off at her dorm

they start dating a week after!

she's a twin! her brother, tyler, also goes to bc and he swims

her and her brother are super close and always have been hence why they went to the same college together

her birthday is june 15th, 2005!

she's the top of her class & is always at the library trying to get her work done

she's also fairly fluent in french so her and gabe enjoy talking back and forth in french around his friends so they don't know what they're taking about

enjoys swimming like her brother and sometimes does laps with him during free swim on the weekends

doesn't know a lot about hockey, but she enjoys learning more from gabe

starts falling in love with going to the games and starts showing up early to be at the front of the glass to see everything better

always has her nose in a book & rants to gabe about what happens in each of them

gabe quite literally towers over her since she isn't that tall, but she likes that he's taller than her

wears a lot of neutral/cool tone colors

a bit of an extroverted introvert so once you get to know her she becomes super talkative and can never shut up

talks gabe's ear off a lot when they're hanging out

makes gabe go to the library with her a lot and half the time he isn't even studying and just staring at her instead of

he's actually super smart and only acts dumb sometimes because somehow he's got in his brain that athletes can't be smart at the same time

emma definitely changes that perspective for him

was super super nervous when he first asked her out

he's more of an introvert so him and emma balance well because they can both agree staying in is better than going out

loves listening to emma ramble on about what book she's currently reading and even starts reading them too!

when she goes to his game for the first time he almost combusts when he sees her in the sweatshirt he lent her for it

emma most definitely tries to give his style more variety so it isn't just sweats and sweatshirts all the time

the guys start chirping at him a lot when they find out he likes emma

can get a little possessive and jealous sometimes what emma says goes "walk him like a dog"

his siblings love her when they first meet emma

he enjoys calling emma "pretty girl" or "emmers" or "em"

you want a new kind of guy, fine, i raise you: the lady i was briefly roommates with in college who once smoked a blunt at a party and then spent an hour confessing earnestly to me that she genuinely preferred reading detailed episode recaps over actually watching the tv show in question

#she sounded so remorseful & i just stood staring like an anthropologist watching their phd thesis spontaneously manifest before their eyes #apparently she would watch the pilot episode to get a feel for the characters #and then just read a bunch of recaps & episode reviews instead of watching future episodes. what fresh steaming hell #this conversation took place like a year and a half after we were roommates btw. i had seen her maybe twice in that time period #i thought she was a standard frat girl but then 18 months later she appears in the wild grass to reveal unhinged character background to me #and i'm just standing there nodding feeling like i missed a weird opportunity i did not want or ask for #honestly thought i was the weirdest person in that apartment situation but now i'm wondering what our other 2 roommates were hiding #not my strangest college experience at ALL but like. definitely top 20 #this wasn't the same person as Aquarium Girl btw but oddly enough they were roommates actually #(not at the same time that Recaps Lady and i were roommates but at different intervals idk) #anyway i probably should have interviewed at more than one apartment before taking over a sublease but summer sess is a weird time u know #oh and this happened in Hong Kong btw

Artair's Garden

Artair enjoys gardening. When he used to live in an apartment complex for cheap because he did maintenance for a discount, he had rooftop access and turned the area into a garden. He used to find seeds in the woods or purchase native ones from Saffron's flower shop and raise them into plants there. When he needed time to himself, sometimes climbing the fire escape up to that place was perfect, since few knew about it's existence and being surrounded by plants was comforting as well as pretty.

He also managed to raise some plants that came in handy for his magical spellwork practice, and he's used a fair few plants he's grown himself to assist his friends with them.

Since moving, he hasn't had time to rebuild the garden he had on the apartment roof. He misses it, but Artair is still very excited to build a new one. It being land he owns means he can build structures like a greenhouse to keep them safe in colder months, and he'll have a lot more space to work with, so he's doubly enthusiastic about the whole prospect.... once his life winds down enough for him to tackle the work, of course.

#the place he lives now is so much better too. those apartments were falling apart and worse #but the rent was cheap and working as a live in custodian/repair guy had it's benefits (more discounts on rent) so it was livable for him #thankfully some of his roommates were less than happy with the space and the quality of life it offered. and another roommate (lewis) #has a little reality bending magic house making power! so artair definitely got a jump in life without it necessarily decimating #his scant resources #headcanon #Artair Kingston #Artair #Artair Headcanon

Fun news! I had my assessment result meeting for my mental health and got told I needed to go fill out another form since my grades are perfect I don’t have a super strong case for adhd :|

#worse yet another person had to fill it ojt #it’s break. no one’s gonna be around for a month #she said I did not need additional forms for depression. i have a very strong case. i have severe depression #which is not news! but now I can go to a psychiatrist. the self care was not enough to fix my brain chemistry #i also had to fill out an autism screener. surprise surprise #the way mental health is treated here tho?? awful #from October first I was supposed to get my final results a couple weeks later #the only reason they met with me this time was because I kept coming by the office every couple weeks like hey. how’s it going #and it’s so insulting to be like. hmm. go have your roommate fill out this form for your adhd #not because how dare you ask for a second opinion. ask her she’s by best friend and my ex and definitely more than a friend. she’ll know #but like. why didn’t you give me that form sooner? #ugh #and I have to ask to be referred to a psychiatrist through a program of my school for it to be free. you can’t even access that request #all in all. 0/10 experience. my college only starting giving money to that department after one of our student athletes committed suicide #it shows it’s not something they actually care about #soup talks

#shut up hanna #im like. im fine i actually am not mentally ill #i definitely dont have an eating disorder. i can have this *food i deem unsafe when deep in my ed* #and i eat it and im like see. i was faking #and then im panicking abt the fact that i can feel it in my body and i cant undo eating it #the fucking mental gymnastics im playing every god damn day #can it just be QUIET #and it sucks bc like. mental illness is becoming less stigmatized like depression/anxiety are taken very seriously as illnesses now #and its clear how prevalent they are in our generation #but no one relates to my degree of mental illness in my social circle. #like in my circle of supportive friends i have in person here. theres no one whos had an ed. theres no one with a mood disorder #theres no one with ptsd or cptsd. bpd. bipolar. none of it. and they care and theyre supportive. more than i deserve but #they dont Get It. like #dgmw theyve never been like. just eat its not hard. like they KNOW. but they dont understand why its as hard as it is for me #and like. this is a side thing but its kind of frustrating that every girl in the department (LITERALLY. all of them) #will say they have an ed like. im not gatekeeping or diagnosing its just. that's just not statistically possible yk #like. you can have severe body image issues.
