When Maura sees Angela holding the baby she'd pulled from a dead woman, something inside her breaks.
She doesn't remember ever being held like that. She wonders if Constance ever carried her when she was that small, or if it was the string of nannies she hired. She doubts she'd have had the skin contact to produce the oxytocin so necessary for healthy development.
Had her own birth mother held her? Her birth father? She knows who he is now. She's seen the photos. She thinks he would have, in the same clumsy, loving way he looks at her. Whoever her mother was, he loved her, and he's tried to keep the remnants of Maura's mother safe by keeping Maura safe. He must have loved her. She can't have just been a random woman in the gang; it's not the way a gangster treats women in the business. Paddy loved her mother the way a man loves a woman. The way Maura loves Jane.
She flinches at the thought, the movement catching Angela's eye. She looks up at Maura with the same loving look she's giving the baby, and Maura melts. She'd known, when she suggested it, that Angela would be perfect.
She wishes that she'd had an Angela for a mother, or a kangaroo carer. Maybe she'd be less awkward. Maybe she'd be better adjusted, socially. Maybe she wouldn't always be looking for someone to hold her.
She doesn't hear the door open, she only notices the long arms that wrap around her from behind. Maura melts again.
Before Jane, she hadn't known what it felt like to be held. To be loved.
"You know she's going to be asking us for one of those next," Jane grumbles in Maura's ear, but it's amused rather than resentful. Maura leans back into the warm safety of Jane's body behind her and lets herself enjoy the moment for once. She doesn't need to overthink it, she doesn't need to panic or suggest the most up to date technologies in IVF. She can just soak in the oxytocin the way the baby in Angela's arms is.
"They're calling her Maura. After you," Jane says, her low voice choking up.
This Maura is an orphan too; it makes sense to pass on her name like this. She's touched and honoured. She had no other choice; a life was in danger and she was a doctor. But it's nice that they think of her when they look at this baby, the past repeating itself, perhaps. But this Maura will be held. This Maura will be loved.
Just as much as Maura is now, if not more.
"How soon is it to start trying?" Jane asks, her voice still low. She doesn't pull away when the parents come through, and Angela hands over baby Maura with a kiss on her sweet little head, looking over at them in the observation window with a smirk.
"How soon is now?" Maura asks absently, hearing Jane's breath catch behind her. She lets her fingers run over the back of Jane's hand over her stomach and she covers it with her own.
Every day Maura breaks a little bit. She breaks down the parts of herself that she doesn't think are lovable, because Jane proves they are. Every day.

Sometimes I think about how when Jane woke up from shooting herself, she kept asking for “Ma, Ma, Ma” and Angela kept assuming she was asking for her, the way she always had after any injury, until she realized Jane was - sore and slurring in her natural accent - asking for “Maur”.

Drown our problems
Okay so this one was fun and interesting to write, it’s fluff that turns into smut. Honestly, there aren’t enough Dr. Maura Isles fics either so here.
Maura Isles x fem!reader
TW: mentions of murder, death, guns, and smut.
Summary: During season 5 when Frost dies and no one is taking it well. Imagine being Maura's girlfriend who just came back from a work trip (profiler with BAU), and you come back to everyone acting weird and you help her deal with it.
******************************************************** You pulled into your and Maura's shared driveway, well her driveway, you had moved in with her three months ago after being together for a year, she insisted that you finally had a more shared space and her place was bigger and was closer to work for you. You didn't see Maura's car parked outside as you walked up to the front door and grabbed your keys, flipping to the house key, you slid it into the lock and turned it hearing the click.
"Maura?" you called out and were met with an empty house, you checked your phone realizing you missed a text.
Hard day, I'll explain later.
You went over and checked the fridge but there wasn't much left so you called in a favor, you were good friends with one of the downtown restaurant owners and so he managed to deliver you some food after closing time, after tipping him well you were ready to just have Maura home. You heard the lock click and the door handle turn, you heard her heels click on the floor as she walked towards you.
"Hey Love I know you said you had a hard day, but I called in a favor and got you some takeout." You heard her set her purse on the chair and lay her coat down throwing her phone on the counter, you looked up but weren't met with the usual cheery or even tired Maura.
No, you were met with red eyes and depressed features, you stepped towards her and tears started to fall. "I...I can't." she didn't make eye contact but you caught her as her legs failed, pulling her into you as she let out a loud sob. You stood there holding her, leaning her against your chest, you held her like that letting her get it out, giving her time to process, letting her be the one to speak first.
"Y/N."she spoke up after a while and calming down a bit.
"Do you wanna talk?"
"No I want you to help me forget."
"What?"
"I want you to make me forget, I can't do this right now."
"Maura, don't you wanna talk about it first?"
"Oh, shut up and kiss me." she looked up into your eyes and placed a kiss on your lips. She turned in your arms and slid her hands under the hem of your shirt hooking a finger into your bra.
"You wanna move this into the bedroom?" you asked pulling back as she placed kisses down your neck.
"God no." She said lifting your shirt over your head. You chuckled and picked her up by her thighs setting her on the counter, she wrapped her legs around you pulling you close. You placed a chaste kiss on her lips and hiked her skirt up her legs, unbuttoning her shirt and unclasping her bra throwing it away. She pulled at your bra as you trailed kisses down her neck, light fingertips ghosting over her hip.
"Please baby," she whined, leaning her head on your shoulder you placed kisses down her neck taking time with each sensitive bud while making sure to leave marks from her neck down her chest.
"Love, you wanted to forget, so I'm gonna make sure you're seeing stars." You hooked your finger into the waistband of her panties sliding them off as she lifted her hips, she spread her legs before you and you could see her glistening. You placed another kiss on her lips, sliding a hand down, and she pressed her forehead into your shoulder dragging nails across your shoulders. "Baby, you're so wet for me," you pushed two fingers in and she threw her head back with a loud moan.
"Maura look at me." she opened her amber eyes looking into your forest greens, pupils blown with lust, lips ghosting over each other, she started breathing heavier getting closer as you pumped your fingers in and out.
“God Y/N I’m gonna….” She let out a loud moan, feeling her clenching around your fingers you coaxed her through her orgasm.
“That was…” she had her head tilted back in ecstasy.
“Oh I’m not done yet baby.” She made eye contact with you and followed as you knelt down in front of her, you ran your tongue up her thigh and then up through her folds, her eye lids fluttered closed you looked up through your eyelashes as her features relaxed before tensing again, her hand ran through your hair she stopped grabbing a handful a pulling you closer. You closed your eyes listening to her moans and feeling her body, your pushed two fingers back in and felt her release again but this time you didn’t stop you kept going pushing her farther and farther. She let out moans that got higher and higher she squeezed her thighs around your head, you shot up pulling her into a kiss, placing a bite to the sweet spot on her neck and rubbing your thumb on her clit, she squirted and you could feel it against your bare skin.
She leaned back as her vision blurred falling forward against you trying to catch her breath.
“Marry me?” She said under her breath.
“What?” You chuckled to yourself as she laid on your chest regulating her breathing.
She sat up looking into your eyes,“Frost died today and never got to experience marriage or kids and I don’t want to live like that.”
“Maura, but…”
“No Y/N I want to live with the person I love and I love you so I want you to marry me, spend the rest of your life with me.”
"Maura..."
"Please, I love you." She looked into your eyes, tears peeking at the corners.
"Yes, I will always say yes, I just want to know if I get to take your last name?"
"Really?" she looked hopeful.
"Baby yes, I want nothing more than to live up to the Isles name and prove to you every day that I love you."
"And our kids, because I want to have lots of kids, I always wanted siblings growing up, and I couldn't have them so I want lots of kids." She looked into your eyes with the biggest smile.
"And our kids, but maybe we should start with a dog before we think about a baby." you looked into each other's eyes and saw the happiness flooding back to her features.
"Oh I can't wait." She squealed excitedly.
"but we don't have rings or a location, God, we have to plan a whole wedding, like with dresses and guests and a reception." She started overthinking and getting to excited.
"Well before we start freaking ourselves out how about we get you off the counter and go get a shower." you laughed pulling her into a heated but flirty/smiling kiss, but before you could say anything the door leading to the courtyard and guest house swung open, with Jane and Angela walking right in with bags of takeout.
"Girls!"
"Ma!" you heard Jane yell at her mother as she walked in on you guys, Maura in her just her skirt no top legs wrapped around you without a shirt in a bra and jeans. what you didn't realize was that you had thrown your shirt across the couch and her underwear was hanging on one of the chairs, and her bra was laying on the floor all in direct line of sight. You both quickly pulled away and snapped around, Maura jumping off the counter and pulling her skirt down, she slid behind you without a bra on trying grab her button up and grabbing the towel off the sink to cover herself. Angela let out a disappointed sigh and Jane snickered, Maura was bright red behind you and you owned your fate as you stood there half-clothed.
"Jeez, next time at least put a sign on the door," Angela said with a laugh.
"Ma, leave them alone it's their house." Jane said laughing seeing her best friend embarrassed as you stood there.
"That's my fault." You covered for her, putting your hand up.
"Hehe," Maura laughed, "At least this will be a good story for the wedding." She said peaking around your shoulder, not having the courage to reach to get her shirt or bra and expose herself.
"Wait wedding?"
"You proposed?"
They asked at the same time.
You laughed, "It was a very heated proposal, but I said yes."
"Well then congratulations!" Angela said Jane gave Maura a joy filled smile coming over to hug her but she stayed behind you.
"While this is great and all Y/N doesn't have a shirt on and I'm currently not trying to show off my boobs to anyone but my future wife so if you'd excuse me." Maura quickly turned and ran down the hallway to change, you grabbed your shirt and pulled it on buttoning the middle buttons, and went on collecting her bra and panties. You grabbed her shirt and followed to your bedroom, walking in you saw her scrambling to find an appropriate outfit. You chuckled shaking your head always on point you thought to yourself. You walked into your shared walk in closet and stopped her running an arm down her shoulder to her hip and pulling her in.
“Y/N I can’t with you.” She let out a small laugh.
“Baby it’s fine, I don’t think they really saw anything.”
“I didn’t have a shirt on and they walked in on us.”
“Yea but you grabbed the trusty towel.” You said motioning to the towel she had hugged to her chest. You leaned forward placing kisses on her lips and slowly pulled the towel away, you started kissing down her neck and sucked on her sweet spot, she let out a small moan and you kept going lower. Ghosting over her breast and playing with the nipple between your fingers. You stood back up pulling her into a kiss and pressing against her wrapping your arms around her.
“I didn’t get to even touch you.” She said with a pouty face.
“Well luckily we both have off tomorrow so we have all night and tomorrow to drown our problems.” You said to her placing one last kiss on her lips and handing her the bra, you stepped back and reached up pulling down one of your oversized plaid shirts and threw it to her.
“I’m gonna go help with the take out, just join when you’re ready.” You gave a dark little smirk and if it weren’t for Jane and Angela being in the house she would’ve jumped you right there in the walk in closet, she watched intently as you walked out adding a little sway to your hips. You quickly changed pace and walked down to the kitchen and turned the corner to find the other two women standing there. You walked up to the fridge and grabbed a wine bottle from the cabinet setting it out and getting glasses.
Jane walked over and gave you a hug while Angela warmed up the takeout you ordered and set what they brought out.
"This is just what we needed, I just wish Frost could be here."
"He was a great man, we would've asked him to be in it."
"I'm sure he would've been honored."
"Just be prepared, Maura is going to ask you which means you get the maid of honor duties." you both laughed as she reentered the room and helped Angela. Maura started cleaning the island counters, trying to erase any evidence of what just took place moments ago.
"Clean that all you want I'll never look at this kitchen the same," Jane complained with a laugh, and her classic Maura I hate that idea look.
"Leave them alone it's their house." Said Angela in a mocking voice.
You all laughed together and spent the rest of your night talking, trying to get through a rough couple of days, and even though it was embarrassing your best friend and "mother-in-law" finding you on the counter it was a small light in a very dark place.

Maura woke up pleasantly warm, her head resting on something surprisingly hard. She nuzzled in until she found a soft spot.
Then she realised what the soft spot was, realised she could hear the little noises Jane made when she woke up.
She also realised she wasn't in her pyjamas, or anything else, for that matter, and the body she was trying to use as a pillow with limited success was similarly unclad.
Jane's hands tightened on her back for a moment before she came to the same conclusion, when Jane's hands froze, as though she too was trying to process the situation.
Maura did a quick audit; no memories of anything last night that would have led to this situation, and a mild arousal that was usual when she woke with Jane. She didn't have any morning-after soreness, any aching joints from unfamiliar positions. She couldn't smell the sweet, cloying smell that she would after the suspected activities.
Everything seemed normal.
As normal as everything could be while cuddled up to an unclad Jane while in a similar state of dress.
Maura blinked her eyes open, coming face to face with the reality of her position. Jane was still frozen, her hands completely stilled on Maura's bare back.
It didn't feel like she'd had a one-night-stand, but she'd never had one with a woman before. Even so, she was sure she'd be able to tell. She only remembered getting home so late last night and staggering up the stairs, Jane behind her with a hand to steady Maura's ascent.
The spare bedroom. The green room. The one Jane always stayed in. She didn't even remember coming in here. She breathed in again, but there was no smell of decomp. She must have showered at some point, but still she had no memory of it.
Jane. Jane was here. Jane might know why this was happening.
"Do you have any idea what happened last night?" Maura asked, yawning but making no move to get up. Her watch - one of the very few things she wore - said it was time to get up, but it also said it was only three hours after they'd left the station last night.
Jane was still frozen, and Maura lifted her head to look at her.
Jane looked terrified. She looked afraid and uncertain and worried and -
-
- and gorgeous in the dawn light spilling through the window. Her skin had uneven tan lines, but it just highlighted the areas of interest to Maura. Maura couldn't tear her gaze away, didn't even try.
"No," Jane said finally, her voice a strangled whisper. She cleared her throat, looking embarassed. "No, no idea. It was a late night. I don't think - I wouldn't have had the energy - I'd have remembered -"
Maura nodded and let her head drop back to Jane's chest. She was due a few more hours of sleep.
+++
Maura woke again to the sound of one of her 'Rizzoli' mugs crashing into the carpet. She ordered stoneware from Target for this very reason. She looked over at the doorway, blinking sleepily at Angela, who had one hand over her mouth, the other still held out as though the coffee cup was in it.
"Ma! It's not what it looks like," Jane said quickly, pulling the sheets up to cover them.
"I saw your car, and you hadn't come home when I got back from work at one. I didn't - I did knock - I -"
Jane groaned and Maura lifted her head.
"I could use a coffee."
Angela, startled, looked down at the mess on the bedroom floor.
"I can deal with that later. Coffee, please," Maura's voice was firm and insistent, and Angela left quietly, subdued.
"What. The. Hell." Jane sat up, groping through the sheets for something - anything to wear. If she took the sheet to find clothes, Maura would be exposed, and if she left the sheet covering Maura, Jane would be exposed. "Why are you in my bed?"
"It's my house, so technically it's my bed. I think the question you mean to ask is why we're not dressed at all, and to that I have no answer. Just exhaustion." With that, Maura relinquished her place on Jane's bony chest, rolling over and stretching, sitting up to assess the situation again.
Still no clothes. Jane was averting her gaze from Maura's bared torso with a vivid blush, which was interesting.
"You know I don't guess, so it's up to you to come up with a hypothesis."
Jane kept her gaze fixed on the corner of the room as Maura got up slowly, shuffling to the dresser to pull out the pyjamas she stocked for Jane, throwing over a second pair, which Jane thankfully struggled into.
They got dressed in the car together. They showered in the gym together.
But they didn't wake up together without any clothes.
Maura opened the bathroom door and audited the room with interest. There was a pile of white clothing in a puddle on the floor, but there were no further clues, other than a mild headache and an ache in her back. Jane groaned, getting to her feet, and Maura collected the wet clothes and towels, running into Angela on the stairs.
"I'll take that if you'll take the coffee," Angela offered, and Maura nodded, handing over the laundry and taking the coffee. Back in the green room, she propped herself in the doorway, sipping her coffee, waiting for Jane to be done in the bathroom. Jane took the second coffee, rubbing her face.
"Phone?" Jane asked, and Maura scanned the bedside tables quickly. Hers wasn't here either.
Something unusual must have happened last night, but not so unusual that either of them remembered anything as being remarkable.
Maura shrugged and went downstairs. Her phone was on the counter, as was Jane's. Not charged. She plugged them both into the console powerboard, sipping absently at her coffee.
"We didn't - we didn't do anything, right?" Jane asked, her voice low and gravelly. Her eyes were sunken and her skin was pale. Maura knew she looked no better. She could go back to bed for another 12 hours and still feel bone-tired. Her legs were like jelly.
"Would it matter if we did?" Maura asked, too tired to keep whatever facade they'd rendered over their relationship from cracking. It mattered to her because she'd want to remember her first time with Jane, but both of them falling into bed together wasn't new. The discarded clothes were new. The cuddling in bed wasn't new. The amount of skin that had been involved was new.
"I guess not," Jane mumbled, putting her coffee down and running her hands through her hair. "Just seems sudden, is all."
"Why are there clothes dissolving in the sink? And why did you give me paper jumpsuits to wash?" Angela asked, her earlier fragility forgotten as she came back into the kitchen.
Dissolving.
A vague memory pricked at the edge of Maura's mind. Seeing 4% on her phone, she turned it on.
Oh.
Acid. The body had burst open and spat acid at them. They'd cleaned up at the office, but Maura had insisted they shower again at home, and on checking that Jane hadn't been burned, and on having Jane check her skin as well. She vaguely remembered saying something about letting the mild burns they had breathe, and positioning herself on Jane without a sheet on her back since she'd shielded Jane from the worst of the explosion. They'd both suffered mild head injuries from the force of the blast, and now that Maura knew what to look for she could see the bruise at Jane's temple.
"Acid," Maura said, and Jane nodded. Maura had remembered the event, the acid, the anxiety and burning. But she'd forgotten getting home, the adrenaline long worn off, and stripping down again, pulling Jane into the shower because she was too tired to bother with seperate showers when they'd already showered together in the lab. Maura sighed. "Please wash your hands thoroughly, Angela. I shouldn't have let you touch anything."
Maura joined her at the sink since she'd also handled the clothes. "Yesterday's outfits are a write-off, Jane."
"You were in front of me when it went off. Your back -"
"They gave us a sedative, didn't they?" Maura asked. "And someone dropped us home."
"Frankie, and got patrol to drop him back at the station, so he could check how it had been planted in the body," Jane said, skimming through her phone, playing catch-up as well. "Is your back okay?"
Maura slid her hand beneath the jacket of the pyjamas, finding a small bandage over her lower back. She'd shielded Jane with her body without thinking as soon as she'd heard the noise.
"I don't know," Maura said honestly, and Jane gave an impatient grunt and tugged up the jacket, examining Maura's back. She peeled back the adhesive carefully, almost tenderly, then pulled in a breath through her teeth.
"Looks painful," Jane said, her voice soft. "I could have got out of the way on my own. You don't need to protect me. It's not your job."
"You are my business," Maura said, blinking again.
"Go back to bed. You're still doped up, aren't you?" Jane cupped Maura's face and peered into her eyes.
"Stairs," Maura complained, but Jane merely slid an arm around her waist to help her with them.
+++
"You know, I thought for a moment," Angela said, pouring Jane another coffee. "Just for a moment, that I was finally going to get the daughter-in-law I always wanted." Jane lifted her head with difficulty and stared at Angela, clearly not processing. "You should go back to bed too. It sounds like they dosed you as well."
"Nah, I'm fine. Not cleared for work, but fine."
"Maura's all alone up there," Angela pointed out, and Jane's face softened, the way it always did when someone said Maura's name. She nodded and stumbled up the stairs.
+++
"It would matter."
Maura blinked awake. Jane was holding her carefully, clothing between them this time. Maura's mind felt less clouded, and she yawned.
"What would matter?" She felt Jane startle beneath her. "Jane? What would matter?"
"If we'd done anything. It would matter because I didn't remember it, and that feels like a - like a waste. I've never been with a woman before, and if I had, I'd have liked to at least remember it."
"Me too, Jane," Maura said softly, surprised by how vulnerable Jane was letting herself be about a topic they often skirted around. Attraction to women. Maura felt the same pull as she had that morning, the same latent, background arousal she typically felt when Jane held her so tenderly. She remembered Jane helping her back into bed, but she also remembered Jane leaving her alone, here in the spare bedroom she'd earmarked as Jane's. She nuzzled back into Jane's chest, one of Jane's hands resting protectively over the bandage on her back.
"Especially if it was you," Jane added, and Maura could feel the coiled tension in the body beneath hers, could feel the bated breath of Jane.
"Especially if it was you," Maura agreed, closing her eyes again.
+++
It took a few weeks for Maura's back to heal, and Jane took pointers from Hope on how to clean the wound and check for infection and how to position the bandage. Maura didn't need to remove her entire shirt each time, but she did without shame, something glimmering in her eyes. A dare, a challenge. Jane made eye contact without blushing, without her eyes slipping down, and Maura felt disappointed. It had felt like they'd been on the cusp of something new, something impossibly intimate, and Jane had pulled away again.
+++
"It's healed wonderfully," Hope told Maura, and Jane smiled. "You're an excellent nurse, Jane."
"Only when it's Maura that needs nursing," Jane demurred. Hope chuckled and joined Angela on the couch.
"Do you want to go do something that matters?" Jane asked, her voice low, and Maura had half-forgotten that semi-conscious drugged conversation so she crinkled her face, trying to remember.
"What we do matters," Maura informed Jane, wondering why she was so down on their jobs all of a sudden. Jane rolled her eyes.
"I meant me," Jane whispered, and Maura stared at her, eyes squinting as she processed.
"I'M VERY TIRED," Maura said loudly into the living room.
"I'd better help you up the stairs," Jane said normally. "Goodnight," she added awkwardly, scampering up the stairs after Maura, two at a time.
"Do you think they think they're fooling anyone?" Hope asked with a chuckle.
"They don't have our years of experience," Angela boasted, sliding her arm around Hope and kissing her.

In 3x08 of Rizzoli and Isles, Maura managed to, in the span of five minutes:
look otherworldly in a bar, deter Jane from Jane-ing, prove she’s spent enough bonding time with Jane’s mom for Angela to properly discern the meaning of Darwinism as it pertains to causal conversation, made an honest to goodness joke, and express appropriate distain at the male concept of a ‘grenade’
Legend.

Part two…
Here is the second part to the Jane rizzoli request.
Pairing: Rizzoli and Isles x reader
Summary: y’all probably get the gist except this involves some torture and some harsher topics.
******************************************************** To Be Continued…
You pulled your car into the unsubs driveway knowing everyone was hot on your tail, grabbing the bulletproof vest and pulling it over your head you fastened the straps around you and I holstered your gun, you placed your flashlight under the gun hand allowing it to rest on your wrist.
You entered the dark house and turned multiple corners hunting the man down, you ventured into the basement but nothing, you climbed back up the long staircase but as you turned the corner, before you knew it though a large metal bar came swinging towards you making contact with your ribs it caught you off guard but the foot to the chest sent you barreling down the stairs. You tried moving but it was hard, you knew there had to be bruises on your ribs. As you laid there you heard footsteps descending and strong hand picked you up from the floor and made contact with your face, you could taste the iron on your tongue as blood poured from your lip, you face was scratched already from the fall but the punch didn’t help. He landed a few more hits to your midsection and leg with the pipe before you heard the doors upstairs and another set of footsteps.
“Y/N! Y/N are you in here?!”
“Jane.” You whispered, you heard him run back upstairs and you tried moving again, you could hear the commotion upstairs and knew it wasn’t good. You willed your body to move despite every nerve feeling like it was on fire, you could feel the blood running down your lip and you spit next to you watching dark red mixed with saliva hit the cement floor. As you came to the top of the stairs you saw he had Jane’s gun as she held her hands up defensively in front of her.
“Please don’t do this.”
“Oh sweetheart you think you’re special.”
“No but please I treated my partner horribly and all I want is to help her now let me do that and you can go free.”
The unsub laughed, “you think you’re the first cop to pull that, let me tell you something, you aren’t the first cop to beg for your life and you won’t be the last.” He laughed again went to pull the trigger as Jane yelled and tried shielding herself. You fired two shots before he could even pull the trigger and she heard them looking up she saw a very beaten you and the unsub laying face down his blood pooling around him.
“Y/N… you’re okay.”
“I’m a little messed up but nothing I haven’t seen before.”
“I’m so glad… listen I treated you horrible earlier and I want to apologize, I never should’ve done that. I’ve been nothing more than excited to work with you and I’ve done nothing more than show you that I want you out and I’m sorry.”
“Jane I understand it’s not easy to lose a partner let alone a good friend, please though let’s get out of this house, I’ve had enough trauma for one night.”
you both walked out side being met by everyone else plus medical personnel, CSI and other detectives. You made your way back to your car and tried getting the vest off but you were having trouble lifting your arm because of the pain, you were about to give up and cry when you heard a gentle voice.
“you want some help?” You turned around quickly but relief flooded your features realizing it was Maura.
“honestly yes please.” You said and let her come up to you, she only stood about two inches shorter enough that you almost couldn’t tell, and you watched as she was so focused about not causing you any more pain, delicate fingers unlaced the velcro straps from around you, you visibly winced as she slipped the vest over you head.
“You okay?”
“not sure…” you whispered.
“Looks like you took some hard hits… can I take a look?”
“I…um… I guess so.” She slowly nodded making eye contact and then looked down lifting your shirt. She ran light fingertips over the already purple bruises displayed across your ribs. You winced when she ran her thumb over one in particular and she stopped in her tracks not wanting to cause more pain, just lightly resting her hand shielding the area, bringing warmth to the bruised skin.
“I think you need to go to the hospital.” She said pulling your long sleeve shirt back into place.
“whatever you say doc.” You said with a wincing smirk.
“Let me drive you she said reaching for your keys.”
“I think I can manage.”
“No, I’m the doctor and I say you let me drive, besides I need you all fixed up for our date later on, you promised the best food from that hole in the wall.”
You chuckled, “God this hurts.” You watched her as she helped into the passenger side, she started the car driving you to the ER, she quickly let Jane know where you were going and that you were going to be okay. After arriving and the staff checking you over you were admitted for the next two days, Maura stayed with you, even swinging by your house to get you some supplies. Everyone came to visit you including Jane and you spent the first night just getting to know everything about each other.
“Hey Maura about what I said.”
“Hmm.” She said mouth full of take out that she’d just brought in.
“I need to be honest.” She glanced at you with those amber eyes and studied as you decided how to say it.
“I was in a relationship before I left the BAU, she was great but work and family and things just didn’t work so we ended things but we still keep in touch and we’re friends…”
“Oh God, wait, if I overstepped and you don’t have feelings I’m so sorry… I’ve never done that with a woman before and I just…”
“no no no, it’s okay I just wanted you to know that I was serious. I would love to take you on a date but I didn’t think you swing that way and I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”
“I mean is it different yes but something about you draws me in and I can’t explain it. Before I met you there was never an interest in women but now I think I’d like to give it a try.”
“Well in that case I think a date would be a great idea… Dr. Maura Isles, chef medical examiner of the commonwealth, will you let me take you to dinner?”
“I would love to!”
After a couple dates to two decided to tell Jane, though she already knew something was up. You two continued to bond over things like baseball and various sports, you’d done plenty of late movie marathon nights with her and even the whole group. You were beginning to feel like you belonged and that this is home. This was going to be your new found family and a part of you was okay with that, a part of you loved the idea of being with this group for years to come.
