People in This City

Leonard Cohen Animated Poem

I’m in the process of learning AfterEffects, so here is a longer project I made based off Leonard Cohen’s poem “People in This City.”

I built a cardboard city set and used real snow to make a world to animated on top of. I recorded myself walking in snow, and layered in some other music and city ambience. I also created some paper furniture to animate inside the apartment windows. This project was so fun and I still have so much to learn in After Effects, I’m excited for my next work!

My Process

Using gouache paint I made some concept art to get down my ideas and overall gloomy feeling of the set.

On my kitchen table, I used my recently purchased vacuum box to construct the whole set! I’m obsessed with corrugated cardboard texture and found a way 2 years ago how to wet the material then peel away the layers to reveal the corrugated layer.

Storyboarding and generating ideas to animate with the footage of the set. I made connections to lines of the poem to best illustrate the story.

Paper furniture I cut out in photoshop to animate.

OVERWHELMED - continuing with the new paper animation - I’ve no idea what I’m doing which is why it looks so scratty, but the laptop was being a pain so I needed to try something else - and this is the result. A downside to to physical drawing over digital is that my room is now covered in charcoal and hand is killing from all the pressure I’m putting on the chalk pieces - which keep breaking - to make sure they show against the black. But a couple of swollen fingers won’t stop me from finishing it - even though I don’t know what to do with it next since there’s no chance of me getting it light again. We’ll see what happens.
