ok so i finished nona, and am officially caught up with the locked tomb series, and here are some thoughts off the top of my head. Most of them are questions lol

obviously spoilers

gideon nav is my favourite protagonist in the universe and i am deeply in love with her

i don't understand why nona was white on the cover of nona, i thought it was pretty established that harrow had brown skin and it was even explicitly stated in nona that she had brown skin. weird.

I have absolutely no idea what that ending was for nona, i could barely understand it, all i know is that harrow was properly there somehow???? and ianthe called alecto a slut, which was funny

kiriona gaia makes me incredibly sad cuz that's my bbg gideon but also not at the same time :((((

the dream sequences in nona were confusing but also enlightening. It was cool hearing about how the resurrection happened, but i'm still not really clear on who the pov character was or even who tf alecto is

so alecto was like,,, sick??? and then she died??? but her soul was super op for some reason, which is how john was able to start doing all that soul stuff and become god??? and then he adam and eve'd her and i get it after that bit but huhhhh????

my lack of comprehension for nona is frustrating because i understood harrow perfectly from the get-go and realised what was happening pretty early on, despite how much of a clusterfuck that book was. even the stuff i didn't know i figured out by the end, but now after finishing nona i still have so many questions arrarargkhar

i'm still not even clear on who nona was, like??? Obv it's harrow's body, but i thought it was like, a fragment of gideon's soul controlling her, but was it alecto the whole time? i'll need to reread this one tbh. I miss the simplicity of the murder mystery in GTN. Those were simpler times.

note: if this series looks somewhat familiar, it's because it is! this is a massive rework of my old 'fight or flight' fic for doyoung, which I posted almost two years ago (pls don't read it, like 69% of it isn't canon anymore and I kinda hate it anyways). it's been a real struggle turning it into something I actually want to write for again (which involved changing the original plotline from x reader to dojae, for which I am VERY unapologetic, don't fucking touch me), but after a year or so of on-and-off planning, here it is. I can't guarantee that I’ll get these fics out super speedily, as I also want them to be very visual and will be spending a shit ton of time on graphics; but if you're interested in a tag list for any of these fics, let me know!

WHAT PEOPLE HAVE REFERRED TO AS THE SPLIT: the fracturing of life as it once was, the steady decline of the natural world, all perpetuating political tensions and rampant crime in two rival cities.

To the north lies Iameh, an urban paradise of impressive art and culture, resulting from centuries of mining and exploitation—a pristine exterior built upon the hardship of their southern neighbours. In one of their forgotten limestone quarries lies Siacia: Iameh’s shadow, their forsaken history, but a thriving metropolis nonetheless.

Siacia is all the blinding colours and deafening sound that Iameh is not, boasting citizens with supernatural powers and the most sinister advancements in biotech. From their empty mineshafts and grotesque lifeforms in the quarry lake arises Burner: the Siacians’ fuel, their weaponry, and their only chance against the genetic mutations that plagued them for generations.

But like all things that come out of the ground, Burner is exploited. It is quickly monopolized, used as a drug, turned into a bargaining chip by the Assembly, a loose organization of businessmen and mutants claiming to be Siacia’s ruling government. Those on the streets of the Quarry and its four cardinal faces know very well: what the Assembly demands from them must be given, lest they face their wrath.

So the fissure spreads and opens wider between the two cities, between all people—only a matter of time before one finds themselves dangling off the edge.

VOLUME 1: FIGHT OR FLIGHT

pairing: doyoung x jaehyun dark comedy with a side of angst, gay shenanigans and way too many dirty jokes.

KIM DOYOUNG HAS SPENT THE LAST THREE YEARS surviving the Quarry streets alone: hunting bounties for the Coffee Cow (a ruthless contract killing agency despite their name), making poor decisions at drinking establishments, and searching for his missing brother.

It’s on one trip to the bar that he runs into Jay: a charming, well-mannered businessman from the East Lanes, with a dimpled smile and particular taste for aged whiskey. One occasion turns into two into multiple—the two seeing each other more frequently with slowly-changing intentions, until the truth comes out. Jay, Jung Jaehyun to his close colleagues, is one of the Assembly’s founding members. Which, unfortunately, means he might have something to do with Doyoung’s missing brother, and makes him one hell of an enticing target.

The resultant cat-and-mouse chase across the city is as frustrating as it is exhilarating. But in a shocking turn of events, it reveals a destructive force beyond the both of them, one that needs their immediate attention and collaboration—regardless of who they are to each other.

VOLUME 2: VIOLET CRAZY

Tensions with Iameh are on a steady incline, Assembly politics remain a treacherous game, all while a new strain of Burner spreads through the streets like wildfire. You and Kim Jungwoo are most apathetic to the recent chaos—the two of you like two sides of the same coin, both endlessly spiteful, now embroiled in a feud of your own. For as long as you could remember, your relationship with Jungwoo was one purely of grudge and petty revenge.

But when Johnny begins his reign of terror, perhaps the two of you are in no position to be idle bystanders. Tragedy strikes Jungwoo’s family, and he has a reluctant change of heart. On the other hand, you remain by Johnny’s side, simply watching his flames burn hotter and rise higher. Dinner party with your fellow curators, handling flawless plates and dainty dessert spoons and immaculate champagne glasses—rinse and repeat, again and again, the routine of an Iamehan artist and socialite.

Quickly growing tired of all the glitter and glamour of topside, you take a trip back to your roots: the north faces of Siacia, where you can shed all the silk and cashmere in exchange for the nightlife you grew up with. Dancing wildly to rediscover yourself and inspire your art, that’s when you find your muse: Mark Lee, a VIP at the Obelisk Nightclub, blue-haired and bright-eyed, immersed in the stories you tell him.

You could stay with him forever, seeking thrills and adventure until you reach the ends of the earth. And yet, there is still much more awaiting: the unpleasant and the unideal, and the thwarting of your course by the stars above.

VOLUME 4: WHEN THE SUN SETS

pairing: johnny seo x gn!reader psychological horror turned body horror. toxic romance and a tragic end. (!!) mature content, including manipulative, toxic relationships and darker themes some readers may find disturbing.

Johnny Seo is a reasonable man. A patient man, certainly, never reckless, never cruel. Johnny is loving, the perfect lover. Devoted, and devoted wholeheartedly to you.

In the days and months after the Assembly’s establishment, he keeps you with him at every turn of the road: arm around your waist, head in the crook of your neck, always whispering and promising you better days. A sovereign Siacia is coming, he says. She will be free from the clutches of your northern neighbours, free to do as she pleases. You believe him—until one night, when he comes home bloody and beat-up, furious and unrecognizable.

Johnny Seo is a meticulous man. A calculated mastermind, certainly, never reckless until he’s perfectly sure, never cruel unless he has to be. Johnny is cunning, the perfect trickster. Obsessive, and obsessed with keeping your memory alive. Obsessed with keeping you with him, an eternal part of him.

Everything I see about stormlight is exactly the kind of thing I'd love to read I think except there are so many books and I have no fucking clue where to even start. So... suggestions pls?

Local libraries (I have 5 library cards for different cities) unfortunately have very little Sanderson, but I do have a £10 voucher for waterstones that I need to spend in the next year sooooo

oh hohoho ok yes i can answer this question very normally while vibrating an average amount

So, Stormlight Archive itself is a (fairly) straightforward series, but it's part of a bigger Cosmere series that is, uh, less so. I do recommend reading Mistborn at some point, since it's kinda his breakout series and will be important but uhhh i haven't done that and when in doubt you can look everything up on the wiki so anyway, here's Pocket's Reading Order

1- Warbreaker. This one is set on a different planet than Stormlight, but it's first for a couple reasons. One: it's free to read online at Sanderson's website. Two: four characters (so far) show back up in Stormlight after Warbreaker and i love them so you should know about them going in. Three: it does a good job kinda breaking down a lot of the magic workings in the Cosmere.

2- Emperor's Soul. I actually read this before i read Warbreaker but it does a REALLY good job at breaking down the magic more. I'd say this one is optional though, it's a shorter little novella and doesn't really impact the main Stormlight storyline (it's on another different planet). I'd say it kinda helps you grasp Sanderson's reading style more, because you're kinda gonna need to trust him going into Stormlight. but if you already are sold, this one isn't too vital since it can be harder to find. (on its own for audiobook, or in Arcanum Unbound collection)

3- The Way of Kings, Stormlight Archive Book One. Look. this book has three prologues and is much bigger than Warbreaker or Emperor's Soul. You've got to trust him but it's worth it. Honestly if you skipped ES, a lot of the magic explanation gets there anyway through the book, just broken up a bit more.

note: DO NOT read Way of Kings Prime, his first draft of the book. its um. its really a first draft. noncanon, a lot of the cool stuff wasnt in it yet.

4- Words of Radiance, Stormlight Archive Book Two

The sequel!

5- Edgedancer, a Stormlight Novella. Yeah you don't want to move on to book three without reading this one. Um, you can find Edgedancer in Arcanum Unbound, the same collection that Emperor's Soul is in. There are probably standalone versions of it somewhere but im not sure where. all else fails, the Coppermind Wiki has very good summaries if you want to read those to move past it. (thats uh,,,, what i did with the first mistborn trilogy oops)

5- Oathbringer, Stormlight Book Three

6- Dawnshard, a Stormlight Novella. (Lie! it's actually just long enough to be a novel but everyone very politely pretends its a novella. this one you can get by itself and ahem. if you want to borrow my copy you just let me know once you get there.)

7- Rhythm of War, Stormlight Book Four

im uh. not gonna lie to you. this book is kinda the 'lowest of lows' emotionally, it gets real dark. im p sure Brandon actually published it with a trigger warning. but its REALLY GOOD just ugh. delicious.

That's all the Stormlight books that are out so far, but uh, book Five releases 2024 and there'll probably be another novella between four and five since there was a 2.5 and 3.5 novella but thats it so far.

so yeah get started with Warbreaker maybe? then see what libraries around you have the other stuff.

Journalist: Sonia, thank you for being here with us. Congratulations. It was important to win today before seeing the players leave on international break.

Bompastor: Yes, hello everybody. It's true that we wanted to finish this series well, five games out of five, before the international break. We had a good dynamic going. And once again today we were able to be efficient and score in the first half and make things simpler for ourselves in the second half.

Journalist: Obviously we know you, Sonia. We know there were a lot of favorable elements today. Efficiency was key for you in this matchup. Lyon has yet to concede since the beginning of 2023 and puts a little bit of pressure on Paris Saint-Germain. We're certain to stay in first place and maybe even have a bit of a lead over our direct opponent. I imagine those are some pretty satisfying statistics for you.

Bompastor: Yeah, you know me well, Romain [Romain Ballard is doing the interview]. You could almost be the coach because in the pregame speech, those were the objectives we set for ourselves. In any case, staying very disciplined defensively. That was our fifth match of the year without conceding a goal. At the elite level, that's a very important element. And I reminded them, that's a tactical aspect, from how we prepare the games, but also the mental aspect as well to stay disciplined, to be rigorous and demanding of ourselves, get the ball back as soon as it is lost, individually and collectively. Those are principles we need to keep. So that's good. And also be efficient, even if we took a little bit of time to get into the game in the first half. The players were able to get on the scoresheet and then score a second goal quite quickly. That really freed things up for us.

Journalist: And Sonia, two pieces of good news today. Obviously it's Ellie Carpenter's return to competition after being sidelined for eight months. It does a lot of good morally. And the historical aspect, it's the goal from Amel Majri, it's the 8000th goal in the history of Olympique Lyonnais, men and women combined. Two really good things today.

Bompastor: Yeah, totally. It's true that we have the chance of doing a job that's also our passion. And then when even more than the win, we get things like that, those send some pretty strong signals. 8000th goal for the club scored by a historical member of the club, Amel Majri. And as you said, the return of Ellie Carpenter. It might seem trivial, but for me, standing next to her, Ellie was really stressed about coming on even with such a large lead. So it shows that's never easy after eight months out. I think morally for her, it will help her regain her confidence. And it will motivate her to work even harder in the upcoming weeks.

Journalist: Be totally honest. Who are you thinking of? Was it immediately Maryam [Majri's daughter]? What were your sentiments? We could see you talking to Wendie [Renard] as well a little before the penalty. What happened?

Majri: Yeah, I saw her from afar. I basically asked her if she was coming to take the penalty Then she said go ahead [and take the penalty]. I double checked with her because I wasn't sure. I took the penalty, I scored. It was for Maryam, yeah, I thought about her. I'm happy.

Journalist: We saw it, it's basically symbolic. But amongst the players, male and female, who are a part of the history of Olympique Lyonnais in the purest sense of the term. We see names such as Florian Maurice, Nebil Fekir, Juninho, Elodie Thomas as well. It's fitting to cement yourself a little more in the history of this club who has given you everything and you are giving back to.

Majri: Exactly. Honestly, I can't do better than continue to be a part of the history of this club, and be next to other big players. I'm really proud.

Journalist: [in English] Ellie, thanks for being with us. It's been a special day today. How are you feeling after your first game after your big injury?

Carpenter: Yes, I'm really, really happy to get back onto the field with the players. It's been a long time, 8 months. Yeah, I'm really happy.

Journalist: That's super, Ellie, congratulations on your French. I spoke to you in English, you responded in French. That's great. More seriously, who were you thinking of and how are you feeling after these first minutes after eight months out?

Carpenter: Yeah, I was a little tired after 10 minutes. But it's okay. It went well. But yeah, I'm happy for the 25 minutes, I think I played for. Yeah. Really, really happy. I'm looking forward to the next games. I hope to play a lot. And for me, to be better and better each game.

Journalist: Eight months without playing. The expectation to come back to your best after a serious injury. We know that ACL injury recovery is really long and difficult. Weren't you a little scared to play again in an official competitive game?

Carpenter: No, not afraid. I had 100 percent confidence in myself and in my knee. I worked hard for eight months. I was really ready for the game today. And yeah. Continue for now.
