Artena is a charming town in the province of Rome, about 50 kilometers from the capital. A small town of ancient origins perched northwest of the Lepini Mountains, in the upper valley of the Sacco River, with a very interesting historic center of rare beauty.

This Day in History: Rudolph Davila, WWII Hero

On this day in 1916, a hero is born in El Paso, Texas. Rudolph B. Davila would go on to join the Army and to serve during World War II.  He has been credited with saving the lives of 130 American soldiers.

He surely never expected to be a hero. He’d enlisted in the Army in 1939, largely because times were tough, and he needed a job.

Davila’s heroism came on May 28, 1944, as Americans worked to break though German strongholds in the mountains surrounding Anzio, Italy. Then-Staff Sergeant Davila was leading a machine gun platoon near the town of Artena. He and his men were to support a rifle company that was slightly ahead of them.

Yet Germans were lying in wait, ready to ambush that rifle company. Davila saw it, just as he reached the top of a hill.

Why Rainha Catarina was the most badass villain ever:

1. She and Otávio were the only true ‘monarchs’ in the series - they were politically minded, ambitious, ruthless, morally unscrupulous, had absolutely no issue with eliminating their enemies

2. She knew how to win the love of her people - the people of Montemor were initially defiant but gradually grew to love and respect her - and it wasn’t all pretense and manipulation I think she did truly enjoy connecting with them and appreciated their admiration for her

3. She was a master manipulator and knew how to use those around her for her own ends - Diana and Virgilio being the prime examples - if not for her intelligence Rodolfo would have been toppled ages ago and herself sent to exile

4. She understood the importance of maintaining alliances - yes she was in love with Afonso but their relationship was first and foremost a political alliance - she wished to join Montemor and Artena and rule as Queen with Afonso at her side

5. She never bowed to threats or violence (e.g. Otávio) and was more intelligent and determined than any male ruler - I absolutely love seeing her playing her lovers around like a fiddle - and her love for Afonso was also quite heartbreaking - if only she had loved someone more worthy of her
