Hey so I've known about my mental conditions for years already and have been pro diagnosed but never addressed hyperfixating before with a therapist. I was wondering if it's normal to get annoyed at other ND people's hyperfixations bc you'd rather talk about your own hyperfixations even though you get where they're coming from? Also one ND friend in particular never seems interested in my hyperfixations and I don't blame her, so it doesn't upset me, but then she wants me to be as enthusiastic...

(continued) ...about her hyperfixations as I am with mine. For ex. she'll make me watch MCU movies with her and videos related to the movies and wants me to get into it as well. While with my hyperfixations, I'm like "Hey I know I'm probably being annoying and have lost close friends and a boyfriend due to rambling/over-obsessing about my hyperfixations before, so if you just listen and be patient and don't say anything hurtful I appreciate it, you don't have to hyperfixate along with me." I have gotten upset at that friend before bc I feel like at least she could give me acknowledgement of "Ok, I can put up with your hyperfixations" the way I do with her. But she never lets me pick what to watch. I'm not into her stuff either but I am still willing to listen and watch movies with her, and encourage her by saying I don't mind her rambling. It's just she never treats me the same way. Do my reactions make any sense? Bc I feel a bit bad/confused. Thank you. (end of ask) Hello anon! First thing, I’m definitely not a professional so please don’t take my opinion as law, but this doesn’t sound particularly like an ND struggle. It seems like you’re wondering if your frustration at your friend is rooted in your ADHD. To me, it doesn’t sound like the two are related, even though hyperfixations are a point of contention. While I don’t know your relationship with your friend past what you’ve told me here, it sounds like she might be having trouble with empathy and/or compassion and doesn’t want to compromise. It sounds like she’s treating you very unfairly and expecting you to bend over backwards to accommodate her HF while she’s unwilling to be even slightly flexible about yours. If you’re comfortable talking to her and expressing that you feel this is unfair, I urge you to do so. Of course, I would approach this gently, but make sure you stand your ground about your feelings. “I feel” statements are very helpful in these kinds of conversations as they help you to avoid stating anything as fact, which would likely cause your friend to become defensive. If you feel too scared to approach this conversation with your friend, I highly recommend talking to your therapist about what’s going on and get their input. With as much as I know, this could be anywhere from a lack of communication to a seriously toxic friendship and there’s really no way for me to know.  In the end, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being frustrated if you’re being constantly pushed to interact with someone else’s interests when they won’t do the same for you. That’s completely normal. You shouldn’t be expected to give your all to someone who won’t give you even a little. If you find that this is a continuing issue with her and other friends, even after discussing it with them, it might be worth trying to find some friends elsewhere who are more kind and fair in that regard. I can’t stress enough that this is not professional advice and I really don’t know the details of your friendship, so please do what you think is best, given that you know a lot more about what’s going on than I do. My inbox is also open if you want to discuss this more in private or even just talk about hyperfixations for a bit. Best of luck~

I watched the ‘#asktheghosts’ videos on YouTube and they were really interesting in terms of character, filming, etc., as well as genuinely funny - so I hate that I’m reducing them to this, but Ben with his hair and the glasses. I’ve been thinking about this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bit from the first Ask the Ghosts vid. They question was “Did you have any scrapped ideas for ghosts?”

Ben : didn’t we have an idea for a downed spitfire pilot and a downed German pilot? and they just didn’t get on.

Larry : yeah, but they never identified what their relationship was :)

Ben : I think that sort of morphed into the captain, didn’t it?

my brain hears this and automatically assumes they had planned to have a British and a German pilot who were in love with each other but constantly arguing. like, can you imagine. the captain but with an enemies to lovers au.

it’s been a week since i watched all the “Ask the Ghosts” vids but i am still thinking about how both Ben and Larry simultaneously lost it when Katy said “replica teat” and continued to giggle for 10 minutes and Larry’s “I think I enjoy the energy of sets” and how Ben absolutely cracked up and really never recovered.

0:40: if you had to choose one of the ghosts to haunt you in real life, who would you choose?

Kiell says Pat because he doesn't want as much, Charlotte says "the less needy the better" and she'd go for Robin because he wouldn't be interested in her life, Larry replies that having Robin in your house would be like having a cat, Mat says it's hard to seperate yourself from your character in that situation and it's hard not to feel disappointed if you're not picked but him and Larry both agree that they want to be seperated from their characters

2:11: who is most like their character?

Charlotte says Alison is the most method she's ever been, they joke around about how she's constantly in character, Kiell answers that Ben is most like his character and the others laugh, Charlotte was going to say Pat but that's not really fair, Larry agrees with Jim being like Pat because they're both upbeat, Mat says the most problematic answer would have been Simon and everyone agreed, Kiell says he's never seen Simon outside of the workplace and Larry replies that you can rarely see Simon outside of work and that he had been working with Simon for three years before he had a reasonable sense that Simon liked him

4:40: for Kiell - how hard is it to play Mike, who can't see ghosts, and they're filming right in front of you? How hard is it to pretend they're not there? Who puts you off the most?

He says it's the hardest thing he's ever done, the scene in the first Series when Thomas puts his head through the car window he was sure whatever he did would be wrong and that he couldn't do it, when they filmed the second series he needed to get used to it again, Charlotte mentions that Mike seems to think the ghosts are floating and (!S3 SPOILERS!) Mat says him and Jim are writing an episode at the moment featuring the line "why does he think we're floating?"

7:27: for Charlotte - how did you manage to shoot the Moonah Stone dance without having a mental breakdown?

Charlotte replies it's like what Kiell has to do every scene, she says she did it by learning her lines really well and knowing when to talk to ghosts and when to talk to living people, Mat asks if she's aware of who she looks at when they're shooting scenes with the ghosts without the ghosts there (they shoot with the ghosts first and then shoot the same scene again without them), Charlotte answers she is and that she has to remember how the scene looked

10:00: do you have any memory of the first time you were put together and whether it felt natural and like it would work? How did you find that first moment of acting together as a couple?

Kiell replies they had met before, maybe in Edinburgh, Charlotte figured out about three days ago that she had seen him in a show there called "Happy Day", Kiell had seen Charlotte in panto in the same venue, Kiell and Charlotte don't remember the first thing they did together, but Charlotte really enjoyed the read with him, all the auditions for Ghosts sort of blur together for Kiell, the scene in the first episode where Alison finds out she inherited the house was rewritten loads of times because it was used for auditions and it had become "meaningless babble"

15:20: do you ever get costume envy?

Both reply no, Charlotte says no because of the corsets they women wear, but she likes Ben's/Cap's army uniform because of the structure, Larry gets costume envy because Charlotte and Kiell get to change costume, Charlotte says the costumes are incredible, especially Mike'a red tracksuit in series 2

18:15: who is your free pass in real life?

Mat questions if people actually have this in real life, Larry says he doesn't have the imagination for it

19:05: what was your most memorable and funniest line to say?

Kiell answers "west-wing socks" when Mike shows the fusebox, Charlotte's is "do come in on" but she really likes the sequence of events where Kitty says "can I see the bottle of wine", Alison passes it to her, smashes it on the floor and then Mike says "sorry, excuse my wife, she had an accident" and halfway through looks up at the pigeon

21:15: Larry asks if they have favourite episodes or favourite bits of scenes

Kiell really likes Pat's "wow!"

22:55: do you like gooseberries?

Kiell didn't know the gooseberries in series 1 were real, Charlotte didn't try one either when they were filming, Larry says they're a bit of a running joke about Kiell being a picky eater, Mat chimes in "do not give this man a lime"

24:35: if either of you were cast as the ghosts, which would you be? Or if you could create your own ghost, what would they be like?

Kiell replies he would want to be Humphrey, Charlotte would Mary because she sort of exists in her own world and because she existed during Puritan times which would be really interesting to witness, Kiell would be something like a sportsman if he could create his own ghosts, Charlotte said a monk ghost would be interesting and Larry replies that they were going to have a monk ghost, Mat says there used to be a monk who played chess with Robin, Larry says they talked about a monk or nun who was really foul-tempered because by becoming a ghost they had proved that there was no heaven and their entire life was a lie and they were regretful about what they had done

28:30: which ghost is most likely to make you mess up when filming a scene?

Charlotte says it's probably Jim, Kiell says Mat is just as bad, Larry replied Simon got "naughtier" in series 2 and Mat agrees that he made some big choices, and there's one line reading that he can't wait for people to see, Charlotte says there's something Lolly does in series 2 which is amazing

30:25: can fans get merch soon? Any ideas of merch?

Kiell comes up with a Mary thing, like an egg timer, that tells yoh when your food is ready, Larry and Charlotte suggest a Mike doll that says "why is that" with a pet pigeon, Charlotte say a board game where you throw Humphrey's head around, Larry replies with Humphrey head piñatas with little brain sweets coming out, Kiell says a doormat that says "come on in on through"

32:25: to Kiell - what was your relationship like with the pigeon?

He hated that pigeon

They can't decide, Mat says Jim, Jim says Simon, Larry says he does it the least because of his make-up

Mat says by now they've probably watched all seasons more than once, Larry said when he was at uni he could watch an entire series after "a particularly heavy night", Ben says they've probably watched even more shows

What is the ghosts favourite show, movie, or period drama? (9:00)

Julian would enjoy The Forsythe Saga and "To the Manor born" (proper comedies), Pat likes Blue Peter, Thomas would like trashy American and Latin soaps and think it was really classy, Robin loves Quincy, Cap would like WW2 docus and pretend to watch "The World At War" while actually watching Sex And The City, Fanny would like Downtown and the waterfall scene in Cocktail

If you had to invite three of the ghosts to a dinner party at your house, who would you invite? (11:45) 

Martha: Julian because he makes her laugh, Pat because he'd play after dinner games (and then they started talking about eggs)

Does Pat love dogs as much as Jim? (14:00)

Yes, he does

Does any particular Tory inspire Julian or is it a mixture of a lot of them? (14:40)

It's a mixture, but there's a lot of Tony Blair and a bit of David Cameron, and David Meller, Heseltine, Boris Johnson, Larry says he's a crossparty cocktail

Did you have any scrapped ghost characters? (16:00)

There were going to be hundreds, for example a 60s music group whose plane had crashed who would've been as big as the Beatles had they survived, bickering peasant characters played by Martha and Simon - one killed the other and then the next day had an accident and died, a German pilot and a British pilot who didn't get on - that morphed into the Captain, Mat says having that many characters wouldn't have been as fun because they wouldn't be as stuck together, another character was a  five year old child who had been there the longest and had developed a mature adult brain but that sort of morphed into Robin because casting a child would be too difficult (they would look completely different by series 2), other ideas were a druid and an angry chef

How do you film the part where the ghosts walk through walls? (19:00)

You walk to a wall and stand really still and then you do a simple transition

Will we find out the Captain's name? (20:30) (this was my question :))

Ben says yes, but it was in a jokey way, he was making fun of Larry’s camera freezing
