Run day Thursday. Had to get one more run before I’m out and about for 4 days of not running. 3.5 miles, 21 degrees Fahrenheit, brrr. Some facts about me: have severe asthma, beating it with my emergency inhaler, eating healthier, and exercising while watching for the signals that I may be overdoing it. One of the many reasons why no matter how bad I feel, I have to push myself to do the right things so I don’t feel like I’m gasping for air. In the last decade, the number of people with asthma increased by 15% Asthma is the cause for children missing more than 10 million school days a year. Kids and teens with asthma can play sports as long as their asthma is managed and under control. Being active, working out, and playing sports can help kids with asthma stay fit and maintain a healthy weight. It also can strengthen their breathing muscles to help the lungs work better. Contributing factors to exercise-induced asthma include: How long you exercise How hot or cold it is How humid it is Whether allergens, air pollution other possible triggers are present while you exercise It’s important to note that the benefits of regular exercise almost always outweigh the risks associated with exercise-induced asthma. These benefits include: Improved efficiency of the heart and lungsIncreased muscle strength and enduranceImproved flexibility and postureImproved ability to relax Short-acting bronchodilators are called “relievers” or “inhalers”. They provide fast but temporary relief of bronchospasm (tightening of the airways) by relaxing the muscles that have tightened around the bronchiole tubes, but they do nothing to reduce the inflammation in the airway. Most bronchodilators open the airway and help restore normal breathing within 10 to 15 minutes. That’s what I would tell myself at the time this photo was taken 3 years ago. I was a first time Mom training for the NYC marathon and completely underestimated how hard it would be with a 10 month old. 
My recovery from an unplanned c-section was really really hard, my hormones took a long time to get back to normal, my daughter went from being a super sleeper to having sleep regression and would wake up in the middle of the night so I was exhausted! To top it off I had no childcare because I was terrified of leaving my daughter with anyone so I took her with me on my training runs in a jogging stroller. 
As much as I loved the jogging stroller, it took me a while to get the hang of it and even when I did, I didn’t love it for long runs. 
I tried making plans to do group runs with various running clubs and they rarely materialized so I would end up running on my own and lacked motivation going over 15 miles.
I made it to the marathon tired and undertrained. I was able to finish but I did not enjoy it, came close to quitting many times and it was my slowest marathon. 
I took a nice long break from running after that and promised myself that if I would never put myself in that position again because it wasn’t worth it.

• This week we're doing a repeat of #couchto5k week 1. I can already feel my lungs getting stronger. This run through, the only pain or resistance I felt was in my calfs and shins. Treadmill running is hard on impact. Once it cools down a little more I'm going to do some training outside. I'll be signing up for a 5k around my 30th birthday (January 15), and next September I'm running the Disneyland half marathon! So pumped for this next step in my life.
