The Avatar Wiki newsletter has published the final portion of their earlier Q & A last year with Janet Varney, Korra's VA .
Questions after the cut.
What is your favorite Korra battle scene and the change that it brought to the world? Oh you know I can never pick just one favorite! But if I have to pick one for now, I think for sheer intensity, I might have to pick the big Zaheer scene, which I’m not even really thinking about the world impact more than even just the impact on Korra and where it takes us all… the journey afterwards… the PTS… Toph… clarifying her feelings for Asami…
If you weren't Korra’s VA, which character(s) in the show would you want to voice instead? It’s funny, it’s like even though we all know you aren’t asking me to take someone else’s job, the knee-jerk response is to be like “Nooooo! I couldn’t replace anyone! I love everyone too much!” But in a multiverse where we’re all just… maybe swapping roles? I might grab Bolin or Varrick!
Who would you pick as Korra’s VA if it wasn’t you? Thank goodness this would never be up to me in real life- I could never choose between all of the phenomenal VAs out there! That said, I’m kind of obsessed with all the ladies on one of my all-time favorite shows, “Reservation Dogs…”
What is something you have come to appreciate more about the original series while rewatching it for the podcast? Great question! Just when you thought you couldn’t appreciate something more… you watch it one more time, and every “one more time” you love it even more. I think an easy answer would be how much Dante and I appreciate “The Great Divide.” Especially after a recent conversation we had with a certain author about a certain history in that episode that may have influenced a certain book or two…
How are you feeling about talking about Korra on Braving the Elements? Does it feel different than talking about ATLA? Honestly? So far, it doesn’t feel like it will be that different, because anytime I watch Korra, I get so immersed in the story, I basically forget I was in it. But how much Dante might get to tease me about little things like I tease him about Zuko? Now THAT could change things. LOL!
What is the process of planning and recording episodes like? It’s pretty involved, tbh! For a recap ep, I rewatch the episode in question at least three times. You know I like to see what Avatar Wiki has to say! I consult the art book and all the dvd commentary (luckily Nickelodeon made all the commentary/bts stuff available to me, which is great!). I think about the themes of the episode and what kind of guest would be really fun and why. And writing the outline really cements the episode for me in new and interesting ways. And then Dante and our guests STILL manage to blow my mind with their own insights!
Did you know about the spiritual arc that Korra was going to have in Season 4, or when and how did you learn about her bisexuality during production? I knew some broad strokes, but Bryke/the whole amazing team did a good job of keeping us in the moment, episode-by-episode. I can’t remember exactly when Bryke told Seychelle and me about Korrasami, but it was definitely one of the things we knew before it actually happened. And we were both so, so happy!
How do you think Korra grew from her relationship with Mako and the lessons she learned that contributed to a healthy relationship with Asami? Good old Mako. This was a relationship I recognized so well from my own teenage years, and my friends.’ So combine that it was in some ways a very classic teenage relationship with the Avatar circumstances on top of that, and it’s kind of hard to see how it would succeed. But at the same time— who’s to say what “succeeding” or “success” means? What if that relationship was a complete success in that it lasted exactly as long as it was supposed to, and helped Korra and Mako both see what they would really be looking for in a relationship going forward? Plus, it was a success in that she and Mako were ultimately able to love and support each other as dear friends, and that’s a beautiful outcome.
Do you miss and enjoy voicing Korra for as long as you have? Here’s the thing- I don’t know what my answer would be if I *didn’t* get to keep talking about both series (and all the other media in the Avatarverse!) at conventions with fellow fans and with Dante and everyone on the podcast. But because I get to live in the Avatarverse through those things, I honestly haven’t thought about “missing” doing the actual show. Please, everyone, just let me keep nerding out on Avatar forever, and I’ll be happy! ;)

Time to go crazy about the characterisation changes in the new atla cuz oh boy do I have thoughts
The main thing I noticed for all of them is that this show is focused about telling a story about a war torn world and how that affected everyone first and a coming of age hero story second, which is a choice considering the source material which balanced them both extremely well.it never had to be so heavy handed for the audience to get it but that also could be because it's a kids show at the end of the day 😅
Aang: where is my adventure loving kid. He just wants to ride the Elephant koi and show his new friends cool things. Yes, his past weighs heavy on him and expectations press down, but he's still just 12. It takes him time to work through his grief and his reluctance to save the world and that is literally his big arc. Learning to grow up and save the world (becoming THE avatar ya know). This Aang gets with the program quick and is only concerned with helping people and stepping up, like little dude ur telling me u don't want to go penguin sledding. I dunno it just feels so off. Love the stuff with gyatso too.
Katara: she's actually the most true to her og character I think. I just wish there was more focus on her like there was in the og. She was my first favorite charcter, put some respect on her name. It was criminal to give the opening to kyoshi, like girl u have ur own novels to be in! ALSO WHY DIDNT SHE BREAK THE ICEBERG!!! UGH SO MAD AT THAT.
Sokka: look I get it It's the year of lord 2024 misogyny has no place. So why don't we tell the story of how a guy learns that those views are wrong and how to change ur views rather than pretending that it never existing, like erasing it. As much as it can be critiqued Sokkas misogyny was the catalyst for Katara to hit the iceberg and free Aang. Narratively this gets them both invested in Aang and just shows Sokkas growth on every rewatch. They could've toned it down but it's a big part of his character growth and what are the gonna fill that with, if anything at all.
Suki: now her in live action I can get behind. She ate and left no crumbs. She put Sokka in his place and stole the episode for me. Also I loved the addition of her mom, honestly goals. Can't wait to see how they utilize her throughout she's the best. No comment.
Jet/freedom fighters: pretty much the same, I didn't love the condensing plot lines all into omashu tho
Teo/Sai: same as above but I loved the Way the two interacted it had so much depth.
Iroh: not sure how to feel. It feels wierd hearing iroh not voiced by Mako ya know. Like his dailougue was fine but it lacked that inflection Mako had which really Gave iroh all his character. It's big shoes to fill and it comes so close. I did die for the line where he says he's the one who owes Zuko. Like. Ugh. The implications of that. How Zuko made him wake up and gave him a reason to keep going. Its enough to make a girl cry.
Zuko: oh zuko, zuko, zuko, zuko. Again tough shoes to fill. I think that the characterisation is all there the challenge comes later on when we get his redemption arc. I do love the seeds they are planting especially in his relationship to Iroh.
Azula: now I called it as soon as I saw that girl, knew it was her who else could I have been. Just as evil, just as lustful for power, definitely in character for her to be doing what's she's doing this early on. Will definitely keep tabs on this one.
Bumi: now he about WRECKED ME ok. It was rough. I loved this recharacterisation. If ur gonna give us a war torn world, give me the war torn ruler, whose been carrying all that trauma and burden on his back for 100 years. Of course he's gonna be mad at Aang of course HES gonna BE MAD himself. So yeah it was rough to watch but because it was so hard hitting to see how war destroyed Bumis mindset, and then so wonderful to see Aang give his oldest friend a piece of himself back
In conclusion I care about Avatar way too much and will be ranting about this even more as I continue watching

Watching the og atla with my son.
God, watching Katara and Sokka's sibling opening, and Katara bending with her anger!! They kneecapped my girl in the live action. Make this big deal about how it's 2024 and Sokka doesn't need to have a misogyny arc so you can show his character development to other teen boys. But let's just do an entire misogyny by NERFING KATARA AND TAKING AWAY HER ENTIRE PERSONALITY
I'm even more offended by the first ep of the live action now that I'm rewatching this, and so glad the animation already exists. 😅😂

people shit talking atla live action...
me, who won't mind if it isn't good because I love mediocre at best, even definitely terrible media:
Tumblr media
I mean... I loved the avatar movie back then because it was so bad that I couldn't stop having fun with it (I mean, it's 2024 and I still read twilight fanfics and rewatch the movies.
I mean, MCU is peak entertainment to me – it includes everything but, like, two series and one movie)

Erin Watches: ATLA live-action 1-2, Penguindrum 8-13
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024, episodes 1-2) Started watching the new AtLA. Trying to rewatch the original animated along with it, using this Nerdist guide to which cartoon episodes are getting adapted into which live-action ones. So far, I really like the choices they’re making! The first live-action episode is a condensed version of episodes 1-3, with some fight scenes combined and some…

i will take a cash grab prequel/origin story over a cash grab remake any day. its so much easier to seperate it from the original story AND! it allows the directors/writers/actors to have more fun and creativity and be INSPIRED from a classic rather than having to be aligned with it or be faced with awful backlash. this is also bc i hate remakes so much ESPECIALLY LIVE ACTUON FROM ANUMATION!! it will NEVER look the same. you cannot have the same story beats and effects and such and not having those beats makes it seem like a warped copy. did i think WONKA (2024) was a masterpiece? no. did i enjoy it more than a remake with timothee as gene wilders wonka? absolutely. because it got to be creative and its distant enough for it to be a different universe in my head. same with Cruella (2021), it took a classic story, and expanded apon it through inspiration and made it a new story. i know it got clowned on when it first came out bc of the whole “cruella hates dalmations bc they killed her mother” rumour when it first came out. but it is genuinely a good movie. also it helps that cruella isnt evil in it lawl. also prequels get the opportunity to have a fun little reference to the original and make it a plot point!! rouge one was cool bc it leads directly into a new hope and the hobbit referencing gimli in legolasses sass. i know people think the prequels fate is sealed bc you already know what happens in the original movie but like. thats FUN! you can explore how or why the character got to that end!! but i also like rewatching whodunnit movies to pick up on clues throughout that i missed the first go around. so long rant but! i enjoyed wonka, and remakes fill me with rage… looking at you atla live action adaptation… BOTH OF THEM!!!! if they wanted more mature audiences do a fucking dragon of the west series with iroh!! or kyoshi for christ sakes…

THAT'S GREAT YAYYYY!!!! my 2024 is also good i've been Reading Books. also yeah the temptation to rewatch atla is real Zuko come home. it's a sign from the universe that we both should. though if anything good came out of this adaptation it's more people revisiting the original
OOO WHAT KINDA BOOKS!!!? I’ve been taking a break from comics and focusing on reading the other books on my shelf I haven’t gotten around to😩 Also YEAH! That’s quite literally the only good thing like they are fucking up sooo badly I’m regretting ever starting the live action thinking it’d do any justice to the animated series💔

I point this out every time but Jet fell so hard & fast for Zuko it’s insane & Zuko’s utter social incompetence is hilarious. I don’t think he actually doesn’t reciprocate I think he definitely had his bisexual awakening on that ferry but I just think he’s so immune to understanding his own feelings he’s more annoyed than anything by Jets persistence. like Jet is out here begging & pleading with his friends to let Zuko be part of their gang, laying on the charm thick as hell for Zuko & Zuko is just like. no thoughts only “😠😠 (why does this guy make me feel like this wtf wtf) 🤬🤬😡” which is extra funny given he JUST said he realized he’s better off not alone. he had a moment of bravery saying that to Jet on the ferry & now he has no clue what to do with it & just wants Jet to go away

I’m just stating blatant personal preference here to an extent but it is batshit crazy insane to me that Jet/Zuko isn’t THE most popular atla ship like “I’ve realized lately….that being on my own isn’t always the best option” OkAY! here we have thee two complex enigmatic dramatic boys who are narrative foils & they MEET & are temporary allies!!! speaking on a purely canon level like fandom & aus are a different thing right now discussing the actual show- it’s Jet/Zuko or you’re on a separate understanding of canon. To Me WHY isn’t this thee most popular ship im so confused

I have such mixed feelings about The Puppetmaster & I have similar mixed feelings about Jet (the episode) though I didn’t talk about that this rewatch because I was too busy being excited to see Jet (the character).
I do love that ATLA’s continued theme is that everyone is complex, even villains & that people can do good things for bad reasons & bad things for good reasons & nothing is black & white. And I’m not totally opposed to the narrative criticism of violence toward civilians in a war particularly because at the end of the day ATLA is a children’s show & it is going to have some simple messages like to be kind - something I think a lot of adult fans forget in our analysis.
However I’m bothered I guess by the way Hama & Jet’s stories…. End? We don’t need to talk about my hatred for Lake Laogai & the way Jet’s death is handled (or not handled) in the aftermath right this second. I have about 8 million posts about that. I want to highlight the way Hama’s story begins & ends.
It really bothers me that Hama’s backstory is fucking BRUTAL. I mean she was the LAST Southern Water Bender. Take that in. Do you ever think of all the water bending moves & forms Katara will never learn or understand the history of fully because that art & knowledge was lost? It was stolen & ripped away along with all those lives. And Hama was tortured in prison for years. And yet. And yet. The story is framed so that what we remember is that blood bending is spooky & evil.
I would have loved if the show just once more showed a situation where bloodbending was necessary & Katara used it to show that this form was important to learn for the story. I would have loved if Hama didn’t have to go back to Fire Nation prison & that’s framed as a good thing.
There are slight modifications to Hama & Jet’s stories that I think would help with the rather insidious message that ends up coming across that victims of colonial violence better be careful so as not to fight back the Wrong Way & be discarded / executed / put away (as they deserve).
