here's adaptability, a comic i made for @waveridden for the blb winter exchange! set during the coronation era's s2 postseason. in which the members of throwkyo make a video call.

Page 1 Aya Chartreuse sits by a table as she paints a small vase with underglaze and gestures with her paintbrush as she talks. AYA [ONGOING CONVERSATION]: Would that work? Katy Hermoso crouches on the opposite side of the table as they fiddle with 5-gallon buckets of glaze). KATY: Oh yeah, I'd love to. "Gumdrop" Che Amran walks by the studio's open door, one hand raised in a wave as ne gestures for Katy and Aya to come. CHE: C'mon, you lot! Clean up so we can start the call! KATY, leaning over the table as they raise a hand toward the door: Che! Is it already that time? ...And ne's already gone. AYA, leaning back as she stretches with a smile: Best get going then! Özlem's a busy lady nowadays. Katy washes up at the sink, and Aya stands behind with her paintbrush, waiting to do the same. KATY, continuing their conversation: So yeah, let's plan on Thursday for that. Aya: Great! The two walk down the hall, then arrive by a room in which Che is waiting. CHE, waving from the couch: Come, sit down! Che hands Katy a tablet as she sits down. CHE: And Katy, help me set this up, will you?

Page 2 Katy, Che, and Aya sit crammed next to each other on a couch. Che sits in the middle, holding ner tablet. AYA: Good thing it was Özlem who left, you'd be hopeless at getting the calls up and running without The Kid [referring to Katy, the youngest of the group] here helping. Che turns to Aya and gently bonks her on the head with ner tablet. CHE: Oh hush, you! Aya laughs with a note of indignation. AYA: Haha, hey! CHE: The call's starting! The view shifts to Che's point of view as ne holds the tablet in front of ner. Özlem's face appears on the screen, but is notably silent despite appearing to talk. CHE: Hold on a moment! We can't hear you. Katy! Assist! KATY, as an aside, in joking indignation: What am I to you, Che? A pokemon? Özlem points a finger at themself as they continue to silently speak. KATY: But yeah Özlem, it's definitely on your end. You sure you're unmuted? The screen goes black. KATY: ...And we lost them. The view shifts to show Katy, Gumdrop, and Aya on the couch again. Gumdrop looks up at Aya with a smirk. CHE, sweetly: Aya... AYA, steepling her fingers as she smiles back at Che with a similarly honeyed shit-eating expression: Yes...? CHE: What was that about ME being the hopeless one with tech? AYA: Point taken. Katy snickers. Che once again looks at ner tablet. CHE: Oh! Özlem's trying again. And... Take Two! ÖZLEM: Uh hello? Is it working this time? ALL: Yes! ÖZLEM: Perfect!

Che puts a finger to their face in a mock-thoughtful expression. CHE: You sure you're not just cold because you're out in that horrid weather? Get some sense and get inside? As a faint aside, ne says: And we miss you too. ÖZLEM: Oh it's really not that bad! Besides... I wanted to share the views here with you. It's pretty incredible. Özlem stands aside to gesture at the mountainous Yellowstone landscape. KATY: Any good biking? ÖZLEM: Too much snow on the ground... But I've been told there's some biking trails, so I'm scoping them out on foot for next time. AYA: pft. Already planning your next few losses? ÖZLEM: No way! It's the MAGIC that'll lose. Y'know I'll just float on by to the next team before it happens. AYA: Well... How 'bout you "float on by" to the Lift next season? Che's been talking about your pottery wheel missing you.

Page 4 ÖZLEM: Hah! I was making pots a mother couldn't love! My wheel should be FEARING my return next season. If there is one. CHE: As if anything could prevent it! Better luck stopping the tide. ÖZLEM: Oh yeah, blaseball's not going anywhere. Özlem, who has only been appearing in frame as they'd appear in the camera from their phone this whole time, leaves the frame's focus. Their glasses obscure their eyes, and they become less expressive. ÖZLEM: All I meant was... Özlem pauses. ÖZLEM: Actually I don't know what I meant. AYA, with a serious expression: You were talking about your return. ÖZLEM: Yeah. I just have a feeling a championship will be enough, you know? The frame showing Özlem once again zooms out to show the tablet. They hold their phone out to their side, at enough of an angle to make the trees appear askew on frame. ÖZLEM: I love the new experiences, but...

Page 5 Özlem turns toward the camera once again, with an earnest smile. ÖZLEM: I'd just like to actually have the time to figure out the bike routes, y'know? The view shifts to the trio on the couch. Che and Aya hold hands, and Katy is half out of the frame. CHE: So, are you ready to settle back down? ÖZLEM: Ughh... I mean, I gotta win this thing, first. That's why I left, yeah? I'll figure out what comes next afterwards. Özlem's camera once again shifts to show them in profile, and again it's askew. They have a small, slightly sad, smile. ÖZLEM: Tokyo was--Tokyo's great. I don't think I'll find anything quite like that again. But I'm sure I'll adjust to wherever I end up. Of course, maybe I'm wrong, and I'll be raring to go again next season. An alarm on Özlem's end sounds. They turn to face their phone again. ÖZLEM: Oh?? Sorry, that's my alarm. The view shifts out to show the entire tablet with Özlem on it again. ÖZLEM: And look! We've talked all about me, and it's already time to go. Bad form on my part! The view pans out a little more, to show the trio on the couch, from the back so the tablet with Özlem is still in view. CHE: Not a problem! You certainly have a bit more going on right now. ÖZLEM: Well! I still expect the full download on what you've been up to this postseason, regardless! Does tomorrow evening work? KATY: Not for me. I've promised Vern I'd help him with some two-person repairs, but you all shouldn't wait on my account. Aya'll fill me in.

Page 6 ÖZLEM: It's a plan! Well... It's been lovely seeing you. Katy pulls out her phone. KATY: Hey Özlem, before we let you go... I've been watching the forecasts. Tomorrow's game is a gold eclipse, so you're safe on the Magic. [note: the Magic was a team favored by bard umpires]. KATY, with an insistent and worried expression: But... Please be careful. ÖZLEM: Hah! Of course I will. KATY: Özlem, I mean it. Don't go listening to the umpires again, alright? [note: I had a different comic planned at first, about this subject]. ÖZLEM: No need to worry so much! Everything'll be fine, there's just a few games left until the season ends. I'll be able to visit before you know it, and the pottery studio will quake in fear at my approach. AYA: We'll be holding you to that!

Page 7 ÖZLEM: Okay, okay, I've delayed as long as I can. I gotta get going! The view pans out to show the tablet. ÖZLEM: You know I love you all. See you soon! ALL: See you later, Özlem! The tablet goes dark. The view shifts to show the trio on the couch. Che leans forward and presses something on the tablet. All three sit for a moment, with serious expressions. AYA: They're not coming back, are they. Not for good at least. KATY: Doesn't seem that way. Katy holds one of Gumdrop's hands. Aya reaches an arm over Gumdrop's shoulder to Katy's shoulder. CHE: But they'll be fine. They're adaptable like that. The three lean together in a tangled hug on the couch. CHE: And whatever happens, we'll be fine, too. I'm sure of it.

Tami's interactions with the Brotherhood

Idea by @fancysteawberrybeard! Thank you! 💗

It's about Tami's relationships with individual members of the brotherhood. They are mostly positive, with a few neutral, but there are also disagreements.

This Assassin's Brotherhood is similar to AC Rebellion mobile game, where characters from other time periods are in one place.

Tami has many mentors at the beginning of her training to teach her certain abilities and skills, and later she will have one or two mentors that will teach her everything.

Bayek and Aya/Amunet: They accepted Tami into the brotherhood, because Bayek saw in her the potential of an assassin (and she is the only one who can make Altaïr happy). Amunet is insecure about Tami's accomplishment because she is worried something bad will happen to Tami or she will lose her life on her first mission. Fortunately, Bayek assures his wife he will make sure that Tami has the perfect training.

Altaïr: He's Tami's boyfriend and inspired her to join the brotherhood. Altaïr is also her main Mentor who trains and teaches her the philosophy of Creed. The two always stick together and do every activity together unless Altaïr has a mission and has to leave her under someone else's supervision. The only problem with his mentoring is he favors Tami over the other novices and apprentices, for example he is always gentle with his girlfriend because she doesn't like to be yelled at, while he is very strict with novices.

Desmond: Altaïr trusts Desmond the most to take care of Tami when he's on a mission and she's not training at the moment. Tami has the best relationship with Des after Altaïr since they are both from the modern era and nearly the same age. She even calls him her future x-times-great-stepgrandson which makes him confused. They both tell silly stories from their childhood and joke with each other. Tami tells him facts about animals and dinosaurs which surprise Desmond.

Ezio: He teaches Tami fist fighting and horse riding. The two get along well, but they don't communicate much because Altaïr is worried that Ezio will start flirting with Tami. Fortunately, Tami doesn't have the slightest interest in Ezio, because she is very loyal to her partner. Of course, Ezio knows that Altaïr loves Tami, he has no plans to even compliment her on her appearance (or Altaïr will stab him) and prefers to flirt with Sofia Sartor. In addition, Ezio only sees Tami as a sister.

Ratonhnhaké:ton/Connor: He teaches her tracking, archery and hunting. Tami admires Connor and reminds her of her oldest adoptive sister Elphina (my Night Elf Huntress OC). Connor is always polite to her (he's just a gentle giant <3). He even tells her some random facts about fauna even Tami doesn't know.

Edward: He teaches her to use guns and swim. In the free time, Edward takes Tami on the Jackdaw to go around the coast, but Tami is seasick, so it's rare. But what bothers Tami the most about Edward is when he is drunk and offers her rum regardless of the fact she is a abstainer. Nevertheless, they are still friends.

Adéwalé: He teaches her how to use guns and swim when Edward doesn't have time (or he is still drunk). Adéwalé shows Tami other weapons such as machetes, blunderbuss and rope dart. In addition, he will help her overcome seasickness on a cruise on Experto Crede.

Arno: He teaches her freerunning, parkour and fencing. They run around the hideout and do the Leap of Faith, but Tami doesn't have good stamina, which she needs to work on. They sometimes meet outside of training, because Arno is always on missions. He tells her about the French Revolution and Élise, how he misses her. Well, Tami noticed that he gets a little blush when Jacob goes to tease him. (French Frye hint 😉)

Evie, Jacob and Jayadeep/Henry: The Frye twins teach Tami stealth and theory, but mostly Evie teaches her because Jacob wants Tami to join The Rooks, which Altaïr forbids. Henry helps the twins with Tami's training when he has time. Tami generally enjoys being with them, but sometimes she just sit and watch the twins argue about what to do next.

Aveline: She teaches her stealth and theory when the Frye twins and Henry are busy. Tami likes Aveline's persona strategy to blend in with the crowd and the use of the blowpipe, so she decides to use these skills. Later, Tami confesses that Aveline is her favourite Mentor after Altaïr, so Bayek decided that only Altaïr and Aveline would train Tami fully.

Rebecca and Shaun: They work on the Animus, hacking Templar websites and data, and searching for the Pieces of Eden. Outside of training, Tami sometimes helps them with documents or some programs since she loves to work on the computer. And if she completes everything correctly, she will play computer games as a reward. Sometimes she plays on their computer without permission later in the evening.

Malik: Tami helps him with documents and books, since it is difficult for him to work with only one hand. Altaïr leaves Tami at the bureau with Malik when he has to go on a mission. Malik orders her to organize a large pile of papers and documents alphabetically. They both talk while working and generally have fun. Later, Tami quickly finishes organizing the documents, surprising Malik.

Leonardo da Vinci: He is an inventor for the brotherhood. Tami has a huge admiration for him because he's one of her favourite historical figures. She looks at all his creations and praises them every single time.

Claudia, Lydia Frye and Maria Thorpe: When Tami reaches Apprentice rank, she will start completing missions with them. She with Claudia pranks Ezio during their free time and with Lydia they train stealth together with Lydia's grandfather and great aunt. Tami had a complicated relationship with Maria at the beginning, because she was once a Templar and in the canon universe Altaïr's wife, but luckily they were able to make up and became like sisters. (remember this post? 😊)

Sofia Sartor: She works in the hideout's library. Tami, like at Malik's, helps her organize her books, but mostly goes there to teach theory and philosophy. Sofia helps her find the book Tami needs. She doesn't meet her much, but she thinks Sofia is cool.

Clay Kaczmarek: Tami would sometimes notice strange glitching in the Animus when she was working on documents. She even once sees a figure on the monitor, waving to her. In shock, Tami tells Rebecca and Shaun about this, but they tell her that she just imagined it. Altaïr, on the other hand, believes her because he saw something similar on the Animus.

Shao Jun, Arbaaz Mir, Nikolai Orelov and Aguilar de Nerha: Tami is neutral with them because she rarely talks to them and they are not part of her training. Despite this, they have mutual respect and will help each other if the Templars attack. (Note: The truth is that I haven't played AC Chronicles and haven't seen AC movies, so I don't know much about them.)

Abbas: The worst part in Assassin's Brotherhood. She tries to avoid and be as far away from him as possible. Whenever Abbas starts insulting her boyfriend, she becomes furious and ready to defend her lover. But Altaïr takes her away from Abbas and begs her not to fight with his formerly best friend, because he is worried someday Abbas might hurt her. This is the main reason why Tami sticks to her partner.

William Miles: She never met him because Bayek kicked him out of the brotherhood for abusing Desmond before she joined there.

Haytham and Shay: They are both Templars and Tami hasn't met them yet. She knows Haytham is the main Grandmaster of Templars and Shay is his right hand. She suspects that one day she will meet them in person and it won't be pleasant…

THIS IS GOING TO BE LONG ivan goncharov first impression: oh how did fyodor fuck you up (did not know/realize he was lobotomized either) impression now: ohh he's my silly. his english dub voice gives me gender envy. i like his eyes. he is weirdly a well-written lobotomized guy. i looked into actual lobotomy for you favorite moment: his entire fight scene was good and more people should talk about it. signed yours truly me idea for a story: primarily? a general character study, however, - bubble bath. it is a character study with him and shibusawa. not set in canon - highschool au. he deserves to be a normal highschool student. he would swear a sweater vest. i will die on this hill unpopular opinion: his character is really fucking good and yes his ability's name is on the nose but i hope we see him again. i don't like shipping him in canon though bc he can't. first impression: AUTISTIC impression now: AUTISTIC favorite moment: them and kenji's fight >>>>> idea for a story: they are a samurai and they meet jouno along the way. they stay with fukuchi after having a rough run-in with an innkeeper and some people who are after them. they smell like blossoms unpopular opinion: i wish people wrote them beating up people more they're literally one of the strongest characters (physically specifically) of bsd favorite relationship: them and jouno's is peak favorite headcanon: asexual and nonbinary tetchou for the win. my most favorite one of all time though is them being half-taiwanese :] akiko yosano (surprise???)

first impression: please be well written. impression now: she is so cool!! i wish she had more screentime but oh my god she is so cool <33333 she is fun in the manga and i love her so much favorite moment: her backstory i wanna say. we don't get too much content of her but damn her backstory hits hard. it adds so much to her character and i love her a lot idea for a story: she and fukuzawa go shopping together. i think she also deserves some fics w fukuzawa. they have a fun time !! unpopular opinion: not a fan of kousano favorite relationship: her and ranpo's. siblings your honor, absolute siblings, ALSO THAT ONE SCENE IN HER BACKSTORY WHERE HE KNEELS DOWN TO HER AND SHES CRYING AND SJJSDHHFBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA favorite headcanon: aro/ace yosano is cool. very cool. aro/ace yosano.? holds her out to you. Hidden Inventory / Premature Death Official Interview

Vol. 2 Shoko Ieiri Role: Aya Endo

Vol. 1: Gojo

–Please tell us your impression when you read the original work and scenario of "Hidden Inventory/Premature Death." Endo: Since it's a story of the past, I was really looking forward to it. After all, even in the original work it's a necessary tale of the era. Having that properly depicted in the tv series was a very happy thing. And also, it was fun playing the non-adult, young, Ieiri Shoko. Because it wasn't of her childhood, her feelings would be closer to that of an adult. It was very rewarding playing the era in which she was being shaped into who she is now.

–What was it like actually playing young Shoko? Endo: At first, I thought of trying it very lively and cute, but received the direction to leave it a little more languid. So it became like, "That's how it is~" (lol) Because she looks so cute, it made me want to try that. But I was satisfied enough just testing it out. Honestly, it was difficult to play Shoko backwards from where she is in the present. I think, as a result of experimenting with various approaches, we have the final version of Shoko-san on air.

–What is Shoko Ieiri's charm? Endo: Even though it's the school era, it's not as if it goes into detail of what happened to her. But then, there's Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto. Even when they're not around Shoko seems to have fun, and when they're hanging out they get along well-- The teen Shoko, it's hard to tell whether she's interested or not in people too, huh? (lol) That doesn't change much, but I believe she's thinks about things in her own way. But for Gojo and Geto, it must've been reassuring to have someone who wouldn't budge no matter what happened. I think their charm is in the feeling that they have the kind of relationship where no matter how many years they've not seen each other, when they reunite, they can say, "Yo!" to each other.

–Please tell us what scenes in “Hidden Inventory/Premature Death” are highlights and leave an impression? Endo: The feeling I got when reading the original is exactly the same as it unfolded in the anime, so I was very happy to act it out. This applies to the original too, but I was surprised when it suddenly started in the past, leaving a strong impression on me. Yuji Itadori really isn't showing up!-- is what I thought (lol). Shoko starts with a line to Utahime with a relaxed tension, but somehow my heart starts pounding from there.

–Please tell us about your enthusiasm for the broadcast and a message to the viewers. Endo: It's a story those familiar with the original work know already, so I think the scenes will come back to them. But, after all, it'll move, have voices, and such, so please enjoy the anime's speed. I'm also looking forward to seeing the completed version. Even from what I saw on the monitor during dubbing was beyond amazing. The drawings were amazing and thinking there were people who would make them move made me excited. That's why I'd also like everyone who watches be just as excited. Their youthfulness 12 years ago-- I think you'll feel their lack of experience and find out about the characters more deeply too. So, please look forward to season 2.

Zoé’s family is facing financial difficulties and as Audrey’s eldest daughter, she’s arranged to be married to the nouveau riche son of the owner of a chain of successful restaurants

(But also so Audrey and Chloé will be rid of her)

Remember when we feared these two being shipped?

Yeah, they’re getting married

This will raise the social class of Nathaniel’s mother and restore the wealth of Zoe’s family

But there are zero sparks. None. Nada. Zilch. And guess why

The wedding rehearsal goes fine at first when Nathaniel recites his vows… Then turns to hell when Zoé forgets her vows, accidentally sets Aya’s dress on fire and drops her ring

Embarrassed, Zoé runs to a nearby forest to rehearse her vows, even going so far as to put her wedding ring on a strange hand-shaped root

Then lightning, wind, crows, and the root is revealed to be the hand of a nearly decomposed young woman in a wedding dress

Zoé, of course, is terrified. Cuz that’s a damn corpse! So she runs away, but the corpse bride finds her and spirits her away

Welcome to the Land of the Dead!

When Zoé comes to, she finds herself surrounded by numerous corpses… Wanna know how they died?

Marc fell off a tall building (Chat Noir wasn’t there to catch him)

Ismael’s mom… Snapped

Reshma died of food poisoning

Simon was crushed by his own analytical engine, and bits and pieces stick out of his body

A small meteorite went right through Denise’s chest while they were stargazing on the roof

Lacey fell off a cliff while going for a hike

During a performance, Jean fell through a trap door

Austin T was killed by some homophobes who heard him professing his love at Jean’s grave

Aurore was struck by lightning because the tip of her umbrella was made of metal

Mireille drowned when some guys pushed her in a lake

Austin A died from hair products laced with uranium (Very dangerous)

Austin B died from a Black Widow. (The homicidal woman, not the spider)

Austin Q’s was choked in his sleep by an unknown assailant

Jean sings a little song to explain everything and Zoé learns that the corpse bride, Cosette, was murdered years ago on the night of their elopement by their fiancée, who stole the family jewels and gold they had brought

Desperate to return back home despite her blushing whenever Cosette smiles because all this is way too much for her, Zoé tricks her into returning her to the Lans of the Living by claiming she wants her to meet her parents

Cosette brings Zoé to meet the Elder (It’s Mendeleiev), the ruler of the underworld, and she grants them temporary passage

Zoé reunited with Nathaniel and claims she wants to marry him, but he doesn’t really believe that and confesses he never actually wanted to marry her

Before Zoé could say anything else, Cosette discovers them together and, betrayed and hurt, drags Zoé back to the Land of the Dead

Nathaniel tries to tell his mom and the Bourgeois family of Zoé situation, but no one believes him and they assume she’s left him

Without even informing Nathaniel or his mother, the Bourgeois family decides to marry him off to a distant relative of theirs. Lila. (Shut up)

Zoé eventually reconciles with Cosette after a piano duet where they almost kiss, only to be interrupted by Jean and Austin walking in on them while making out

Zoé/Cosette: *Lean in to kiss*

Jean: Sweet! Is this a make out party! Come here, mon amour! *Dips Austin and kisses him*

Later, Zoé learns of Nathaniel’s impending marriage to Lila from her family’s newly deceased butler

Deciding, ‘fuck it, she’s cute, and I don’t even like guys,’ Zoé decides to marry Cosette

Only, this will require her to repeat her wedding vows in the Land of the Living and drink a deadly poison in order to join them in death.

The dead prepare for the ceremony and head "upstairs", where the town erupts into a temporary panic upon their arrival until the living recognize their departed loved ones and reunite with them

The chaos causes a panicked Lila to expose her own poor financial standing and her intentions to marry Nathaniel only for his wealth

Nathaniel: I’m out! I almost got married to a girl who’s clearly sapphic, I saw a corpse in a wedding dress, the dead have risen, and now this?! I just can’t do this anymore! *Grabs a bottle of wine* And I’m keeping the ring!

Going for a walk to clear his head, Nathaniel witnesses Zoé and Cosette’s wedding as Zoé complete her vows without any trouble

He decides not to stop the wedding because obviously Cosette makes her happy in a way he wouldn’t ever be able to and sits down… Right next to Marc

Just as Zoé is about to drink the poison, Lila arrives to kidnap Nathaniel and holds him a knife point, threatening to kill him unless he marries her

Cosette: … Wait a minute… *Recognizes Lila* Oh, you SON OF A-!

Reshma: We’re in a church!

Cosette recognizes Lila as both her previous fiancée and murderer

Zoé duels with Lila to protect Nathaniel until Cosette intervenes to save her life by taking a sword to the neck

Accepting defeat, Lila mockingly toasts Cosette for dying unwed and unwittingly drinks the poison, causing her to die and allowing the dead – who cannot interfere in the affairs of the living – to take retribution against her for her crimes

The Dead: *Dragging Lila to a grave as she kicks and screams*

Ismael: Welcome to the Land of the Dead, bitch.

So, because she loves Cosette and her family really sucks ass, Zoé drinks the poison and becomes a corpse. They kiss, and all is well for the married couple

… Well, some is well

See, during Zoé and Lila’s duel, Lila accidentally slashed Nathaniel right across the chest and it cut way deep. Also, this is Victorian times, is the technology available to ensure he won’t die?… Probably not.

Anyway, Nathaniel dies, and now he’s a corpse. Fortunately, that cute corpse he sat with offers to show him around the Land of the Dead

also im putting this under a readmore because it got too long. im sorry for ranting about jojo's bizarre adventure. can you forgive my sins....

TLDR; cinderella (stand) is a love potion, love potions are nonconsensual and not compelling. it rips koichi of his free will, and yukako is able to manipulate him, without any pushback or consequences. there's no growth!!! araki still cannot write women!!!

i think the first thing that's really important that i need to get out of the way first is that cinderella's ability IS a love potion. like straight up. and obviously love potion stories are creepy and unconsensual

when i say this, people tend to push back against the idea but its true. how else would you categorize it? koichi would not give yukako the time of day pre-cinderella, even for a second, and in the anime was even seen RUNNING AWAY FROM HER in fear when he saw her on the streets 😭.. and then, suddenly after yukako visits aya once, he is being kind to her. even worried about her. and willing to go to the cafe with her alone.

he is apparently so 'in love' with yukako that he decides to potentially GO BLIND FOR HER??? HUH??? these kids know NOTHING ABOUT EACH OTHER BTW!!! they have no common interests. in their first interactions, yukako thought he was a lying cheater who she needed to fix. and koichi literally hated her, and was terrified of her. she stressed him out so hard that he thought he killed his own stand

like, koichi is incredibly kind and forgiving, but literally nothing in their relationship changed so that he would be comfortable even being near her. its just too sudden. last time they were interacting, koichi was telling her that he hated her and complaining that she "never listens to anything [he says]". she has this pattern of ignoring his opinions and feelings... and it obviously didnt end in yukako falls in love.

also this line:

girl "his rational mind"??? you mean the mind that isn't attracted to her in any way.. who remembers the abuse, and how unwilling to change she is 😭

the existence of this arc erases any interesting character growth that yukako could have had. she goes from telling koichi that "i will make you love me, if i can't have you, i'll just kill you, you belong to me" etc etc etc, to "ok, maybe i don't need him after all" at the end of her initial episodes. and then suddenly she regresses back to "actually i do want him" and then she gets him, with no substantial growth on her end.

she isnt kidnapping him this time which is good i guess, but she continues to ignore koichi's free will and agency by "bending fate" so that they can be together. that's just not ok to me

but i think the reason why im so reactive to yukako's situation, and not someone similar like rohan, is that irl mangakas DON'T steal your memories for manga material (i'm pretty sure). but people ARE abused by their romantic partners. yukako's abuse is cartoonish, making koichi eat paper and erasers and building him an electric chair, but its still uncomfortable (especially considering she ends up with him in the end).

i also feel like people don't seem to take domestic abuse as seriously with women perpetrators. we girlbossify them instead. it all just feels so icky to me, i cant shake it.

everything is made worse by the fact that araki CANNOT!!! write women or f/m relationships well in early-mid era jojo. rohan, tamami and others in the koichi fanclub have clear character arcs, they get better. yukako just doesn't. or at least it isnt enough

aya tsuji is also a flop of a character as well.. i've never heard anyone talk about this, maybe just out of discomfort, but she seems like a predatory lesbian trope. there are a few scenes where she is touching yukako inappropriately or ogling her (and i know with araki's art, it's hard to remember, but she's 16!). it's honestly just so uncomfortable i hate it lol. it's a shame bc i love seeing stand users who aren't attacking the protags, and instead just use their stand for their jobs… but again. araki cant write women. at least women can actually have stands without dying now. but we are far from stone ocean... we'll get there eventually....

ok tbh i have more thoughts but i think for all of our sanity im going to end it here. also my browser glitched and deleted some of this so i wanna be done with it

listen. if you ship them thats fine, really i cant stop you, though i'd recommend thinking about the implications a little harder. yknow. maybe you could rewrite canon so its not incredibly creepy. bc araki flops sometimes and it is perfectly moral to correct him (i do it all the time!!!!!!!)

and for the people who make abuse jokes with them: you get no bitches. also tell your dad to stop calling me and sending me money, its really desperate and i already have enough boyfriends. its embarrassing

Personal Opinion: There is so much to love in this book. The diverse cast, the chosen families, and the sweet romance of reconnecting with someone you had once lost. If you don’t fall in love with this book then there’s something wrong with you. Although it can be hard to keep up with and differentiate the friends at times because there are so many of them. But overall, I really enjoyed this book.

Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:

Likes:

- Diversity win! Pretty much the entire cast is in some way a person of color, queer, or both. We have Black kids, brown kids, Asian kids, trans kids, gay kids, non-binary kids, and so many more. But best of all, they are all thriving. We have Cola Carter, a Black lesbian who is a top star and creating new stars that are queer and POC like her. Aya is Latina and queer too and she gets to live her dream making music and even inheriting Cap’s legacy of leading the Sunshowers. Suwa and Santi are both gay Asians and they are in love. Suwa is a rising star making music that matters to him and Santi is just living his best life painting and teaching art to kids. Everyone is thriving and I love that for them.

- Found/chosen family is just so important in this story. Santi and Aya are not blood related but they care about each other very deeply. Aya is so cool too, giving Santi enough freedom to explore while also being heavy-handed enough to discipline him when he needs it. Suwa, on the other hand, lives with Cap, who took him in when home became unsafe for Suwa. He even refers to Cap as “Dad” sometimes and that is so cute to me. Cap is honestly the best, he really cares for all his students and wants the best for them. Even after retiring, he still wants to give students a love of music. I love that.

- But we also have so many friends! Every single one of them are so kindhearted and cool. Mira, Octavian, Ari, Reva, Feli, and I’m likely forgetting someone but they’re all good people. They care for Santi and Suwa and the way they plot to get them together was hilarious. But I just love how easily they accept Santi into their group and how easy it is for them to forgive Suwa for leaving them for a year and a half. They’re ride-or-dies, really good friends.

- The scene where Suwa goes (to his dad’s) home after that interview just makes me tear up. Especially when he went into his old room to get the hanbok his dad gave him. It was just so precious to see his relationship with his dad mending. Even though it’s far from perfect and his dad was abusive in the past, I love seeing them both grow.

- Mira was absolutely right, Santi is a hunk. He’s clearly athletic and he’s covered in tattoos so that already makes him physically hot. But then he’s also an artist and a chef! A perfect package! Not but seriously, when Suwa messed up in the kitchen and Santi jumped in to help him, I felt my heart grow three sizes. The love was still there! The care was still there! The domestic tenderness was still there!

- Suwa being Memo was not at all surprising but it was also enough of a twist to really have an impact. By which, I mean, I was also rationalizing to myself like “No, it can’t be.” But when it was confirmed, I was like, “I fucking knew it!” It’s good, like a loose end being fixed.

- I also love all the references in this book. Mainly the Agumon bobblehead. Digimon is one of my favorite animes so of course I was going to love that. But also, Mugen Glider. The way they describe it in so much detail made it sound like an early, Showa-era Ghibli-esque show. I genuinely thought it was real! But it’s not! But it sounded so real and that’s what I like about it. I just wish I could watch it.

Dislikes:

- One thing I don’t like? Suwa abandoning his life in LA for Japan for a year and a half after dumping Santi. Bruh. I just, it was so bad. Suwa was acting so toxic too when he came back, reeling Santi in while also keeping him at arm’s length like Santi was the poisonous one. But at least Suwa apologized for his behavior. Because otherwise, I would not have wanted them to stay together. And I hope he does get serious about therapy again like he said he would.

after Years of there being no PMD-based pokeau extension. i finally formed enough coherent ideas for one B)

rambling below cut

the PMD-verse is a seperate plane, divided from the normal world by the spirit world acting as a border. since it was only created around ~1000 years ago by arceus, its societal and infrastructural development is closer to medieval times as opposed to the main world which has physically existed for longer in-story

first row is some 'vacationers' from the normal world!

wisteria (umbreon) ; goes on vacation there with amalthea when she goes. overall very nervous and tired but hopes she may be able to be more social in a world where she doesn't have to pretend she's dead (long story)

lady amalthea (xerneas) ; as a part of her emissary's powerset, she can easily traverse between planes, and often goes to the PMD world on 'vacation' / to avoid aya / whatever. very well known and revered because she pays the most attention to the plane out of all the legends

AZ (furfrou) ; amalthea's QPP, they've been going over there together for so long that he's as well known as she is. very large for a furfrou but nobody really wants to question it

second row is some characters i concepted in the gates to infinity era but then never did anything with!

yoshika (temp name?) (cofagrigus) ; she's like. cute girl that can body you personality archetype. very happy go lucky and has been princess's friend since they were both kids, now serves as her dedicated bodyguard/knight

peri (serperior) ; ohohohohoho ojousama type, stellar management skills and helped revolutionize the trade industry / flow of items. her secret? in her past life she was a human and also a business major. dont tell anyone.

princess (gothorita) ; a royal heir who thinks being stuck in one place too long is boring, so she sneaks out to do mystery dungeons with yoshika

a few more Beyond era characters, some more overhauled than others:

Sara Stewart is...basically just an OC, but along the lines of Lara, in that she’s got a few existing characters in her DNA. She’s the daughter of John Stewart and Lyla Michaels, so similar to Diggla and Lyla’s daughter/son (time travel bullshit) Sara, who’s replaced by John Jr. Reversing that, Sara was born under the latter name, but goes by Sara as an adult. She’s a metahuman with a direct line to the Green Emotional Spectrum, which gives her some light physical enhancements, but more significantly the capacity to generate a bow and arrows she’s able to mentally control to a variety of effects.

Next is Kai-Ro who’s basically a direct lift from canon. His older sister is Curare of the League of Assassins (which shockingly is also canon?) and he’s the Justice League Unlimited’s main Lantern.

Harry Jordan is...an odd addition? So, there’s a Hal Jordan who’s the grandson (?) of his namesake in Countdown Arena who’s the Lantern of Earth-12, ignoring Kai-Ro completely. I wanted to play with that idea little, so he’s Harry instead of Hal here, but instead of Hal’s grandson, he’s an experiment by Mosaic scientists to create another Aya-class AI capable of channeling green energy...with the personality of Hal Jordan. While the experiment technically worked, Harry lacks a lot of the texture and depth of the original Hal, so he’s much more childish and impulsive, driving Kai and Sara crazy having to put up with him.

Hail and farewell

This is the last Co-op Digital newsletter. It has had an excellent and enjoyable run, thank you to everyone who helped get it going with decisions, everyone who kept it going with content, and everyone who read it. We’ve been wrapping up with 3 questions. Previously: more radical membership and more than a shop?

What if shops didn’t sell things?

Supermarkets and many other types of retail businesses are often high volume/tight margin machines, looking to increase volume and find small gains and complementary products and services with higher margins. Will this always be the case?

As climate change bites into the world, making it less predictable, will the cost and availability of materials change the dynamic for retail? Do supply chains fracture? Will managing the entire lifecycle of products and packaging add cost that makes retail unviable, or will it unlock new business? Can shopping fit into circular economies if recycling and reuse becomes central? What if shops bought things from you, instead of selling them to you?

Aya looks the length of the warehouse. There’s a haze in the distance where the unfactory starts and above the superstructure is barely visible behind the ambient dayglow. A city inside a building.

She pulls the door shut on her housing unit and walks to the bus stop. There’s only a couple of minutes to wait before a driverless bus pulls up. These carbon grey boxes crawl the building, patiently looping between the different work, housing and leisure zones.

Aya gets on the bus and sits. Her glasses immediately pop up an interactive about hitting this month’s KPIs. With a glance she flicks it away, and looks the other way to access shopping. A carousel of plaid shirts flickering across the field of view, partly obscuring the view out of the window of apartment blocks, terraced 2-up 2-downs, community centres, and behind her in the distance parkland and the executive mcmansions. Aya considers buying a shirt that says 2005 and has all the confidence of that era. The checkout dances and says: “Hey you know you could put that 229.50 into something more long term? Say Pension to put it to work for you.” Aya sighs, shuts her eyes and whispers “Cancel”, the UI an afterimage in reversed colours.

Aya steps off the bus at the warehousing zone and passes through two layers of perimeter security: ID badge and then a tongue print which performs ID verification and a recreational drugs test. Now she is matter-side. She steps through the air wall into a cavernous space: kilometres of racking, ducting, assembly areas, disassembly areas, recycling, storage, cabling, transport, uncountable shelves of racking and gigantic bays of raw material.

10 years ago, at peak shopping, this building was Amazon’s largest fulfilment centre, the entire building performing inventory, pick and pack - all of it heading into cardboard boxes, out the loading bays and to everyone’s home via the Amazon-only lanes on the motorways.

Since then, the building has grown and evolved in response to 15 years of carbon budgets and circular economy targets. The shadow of the smile logo is still faintly visible on the wall. The work is now two-way: they’re doing as much inbound for recycling as they do outbound retail: the increasing value of material feedstocks made disassembly and recycling higher margin businesses. Across the way, building crews are pulling out the pick and pack racking, and hauling in more recyc stations.

Conveyor belts of toys, consumer goods, electronics, plastic items, everything. Some things are automatically sorted, separated by size or material type into smaller flows on smaller conveyors, a river delta. The metal goes off along a conveyor to be remelted in a distant area. The plastic is ripped apart into uncountable white-edged grains of feed stock.

Further away, and behind more layers of security, are the goop vats where the synthetic bio voodoo happens. There’s a smell of ammonia and long chain polymers everywhere, which the air ducting cannot ever remove entirely.

Here though, the river belt meanders through rows of stations, where human-robot pairs work next to each other, pulling objects off the main belt and moving them to several smaller tributary belts for onward sorting.

Aya walks up to the only unstaffed station. A fixed robot is at the wide conveyor belt. Its body is a 7-axis spine of rotatable stainless steel segments that look more like muscles than components. Its arm ends in an array of cameras, lidar sensors and rubber tipped and suction manipulators. Around the robot is a 2 metre no-go zone hashed out in hazard orange. It has placed several objects in that space around its base. A Casio watch. A christmas tree toy. A clown painting on black velvet. Lego pieces.

The supervisor approaches and shrugs at Aya: “You make it work, if you can. I in’t going near it though…” Aya swipes her badge into the work station. The robot’s arm monitors everything that passes on the belt under it, occasionally twitching as if indecisive. But it is not moving and not sorting items.

Aya watches the belt for a while and reaches out to pick up an old lunch box in blue and red plastic. She shows it to the robot, and then with great care Aya places it on the floor, inside the no-go zone, and steps back. The robot’s arm bends, the array inspecting the lunchbox for several seconds.

Then it straightens, moves back over the belt, and starts grabbing objects and sorting them.

So the relationship between Tettsu and Nikka was implied to really be an on again and off again type of relationship so they were apparently broken up at the time. But they could have elaborated that a lot more.

That's how I feel about Dan. Nothing against the actor, not any thing against Aya Asahina's husband at all (which is still weird to know that they're married). But I can't tolerant Dan as a character in any way.

Kizzy hanging out with Naomi, Lala, possibly the Strawberry Girls but only if she wants to catch their ignorance. And the original characters too. Not sure what the connects are between the female characters. I might have to figure that out. Anyway. More interactions between the female characters though since you never seen them together before for reasons that I still don't know why. So more female characters.

Daruma and Oya are definitely the most reckless gangs in SWORD.. I don't think they care what happens to themselves because they're so stupid. Some Sannoh boys are like that too. But I could really imagine Rude Boys, Sannoh and possibly Rascals teaching them out to fight a more careful way to fight. At least for protecting the right body parts.

I thought that too. Conversing about their business. And Rocky kinda complimented Hyuga to some extent, because he mentioned how he respected Daruma's passion for fighting. It's a twisted compliment.

I don't know if my name is considered popular anymore. And my own name is also unisex too. And, apparently, my name is the boy version; that was not my mother's intention since she preferred the spelling to my name rather than the other spellings. But still. I just prefer aliases.

Exactly. Unusual names, bizarre names, eccentric names are fun for a character to have rather than some plain names everyone else has for their characters. But that's just my biased opinion about that though.

Yes. When it comes to the overly expensive, extravagant, fashion that they have.. Certain clothing would be too expensive to replace unless that clothing is covered in blood. Since blood might be difficult to get out of white clothing. Which reminds me about a thought I had about the White Rascals and blood, I really will get to that in a moment too.

So maybe White Rascals can make an exception, just with Blue, when they need sewing done to their torn clothes and missing buttons too.

Even though I love the fashion for White Rascals, I would also have to that sometimes annoys me to know outfits like in Rocky's End Of Sky is completely white. So you can barely see the sewing details of many clothes they wear for that reason. Like Rocky, add a splash on color in the material - besides the gloves anyway. I wanna slap him for that.

But at least whenever I write the End Of Sky era to the story, I'd have the knowledgeable of what Rocky's outfit looks like for all descriptive reasons I can think of. So that is a plus side to having those pictures.

Yes. Blue and Rude trade buttons, patches, patterns and even certain material for what they want. And not only does she help Lala alter her clothes, but also the children too, because they're clothes are twice in size on the children. Extra materials could be used for other things.

I still wanna slap around the Sannoh boys for not committing to style, Cobra is the only one with real style amongst the Sannoh boys. Or it's possibly Noboru and even Yamato have style. But no one else though.

In an alternate timeline.. What would have happened in Rascals found Sarah before Warriors did? Seriously. A woman who was in an abusive family, she became a fighter to protect herself from men but just only goes after any men who don't deserve the violence she does to them.

Kizzy won't discriminate. She will fight anyone and everyone, doesn't matter if that person is man or woman. She'll fight anyone she has to.

The only time I've heard a SWORD leader wanting to fight a girl, I may have to say that was Murayama. The time Oshiage wanted to tell him, y'know, that she had a crush on him.. He thought she wanted to fight.

I still don't know which of my characters are fighters, if they are really fighters. But I've had a thought. Blue's the middle child of five siblings though.. Two brothers, two sisters. I imagine her being more of a type of pacifist (like Mitsuya). But, because she comes from a big family in obvious ways, she might know how to defend herself in the situations that are more rowdy or violent. She doesn't fight, but will if she would need to. That was really a thought I've had for her character anyway.

Wait! I thought that interaction was between Koo and Chiharu? Since I remember a scene between those two. Nevermind. The scene that's between Koo and Chiharu was from the first movie, not the second.

I sent a manga scene to you. Hyuga really does enjoys biting people, I think the man needs a muzzle to prevent him from biting anyone else now. Or maybe those muzzles that psychopaths wear in the asylums.

So like in the first movie... He used those musical sticks - I don't know what those musical sticks were called, but he used those as weapons until he decided to use his hands. And, for some reason, I could really imagine a dagger inside the handle to the umbrella he had with him.

I have many diagnosed conditions. Asperger's Syndrome, Attention Deficient Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety and also Depression to list a few of my mental disorders. I won't list every type of condition I have. But those might be the more obvious conditions.

So I will actually give the main character might diagnosed conditions, at least some of those conditions. Since the disorders barely have the proper representation in media.. Especially because of stereotypes.

That was the thought I had. Like in Borderlands. She was in a building that collapsed, got severely injured, even cut off her own leg because of infections. That's what I thought after sending that last message.

When it comes to horror genres, he would definitely enjoy the whole final girl type to horror movies. He would enjoy the psychological and supernatural horror genres because female characters aren't the only characters getting abused. So you will have to talk him into watching gorier horror movies and shows. But, not just for horror, I could really see him enjoy shows and movies with strong female characters who's well written. Like Orphan Black for example. That's only one example.

And I don't know why this thought is really funny to me.. But imagine. Girlfriend talks Rocky into watching Alice In Borderland. Obviously, I'll see him hating Niragi and Bando (men who abuse or murder women). I could see him liking Chishiya just because he supports transwomen. But the funniest reaction he could have is seeing the two main actors looking like his friends, Noboru and Tsukumo. I couldn't resist not to.

Obviously. Cobra, Rocky, Smoky, and even Takeshi would be mature about the whole situation for the most part. Rocky.. That depends on which child, the son or daughter, because he'll go after anyone who is mean to his princess. Because he's so protective like that to his girls.

Why can I imagine Murayama doing that? Maybe because Murayama just wanted an excuse to finally fight someone again, so he is actually the chance for that reason. Because he really wants to fight. But even also to protect his child at the same time to. So it's the win situation.

Even if the fathers just showed up to confront those children who has bullied their child or children, or even confronted the parents about it, their appearance is just intimidating enough for most people anyway.

Okay. So.. The blood. I've had a thought. Obviously the White Rascals, their signature color is white. Their clothing is predominantly so white with the occasional color like black and grey mixed in, sometimes red too (for Rocky). But imagine a Rascals is in relationship with a woman though. And she is menstruating. Between their between being white material. I can even imagine that Rocky's furniture and decor is white, black, silver and maybe gold. So think of an embarrassing situation in which the girlfriend accidently bled on herself, or their clothes if she's sitting on Rocky's lap, or the bedding and furniture. Definitely a whole embarrassing situation for women. I know most of the White Rascals men are really mature enough not to make a scene over some blood. But that is always a really embarrassing situation for woman though, regardless of the connection between Rascals and the women. I may be overthinking this situation. But still. I don't know what will happen.

True. Maybe. Whenever you're watching Asian shows and movies, but especially Japanese, that wouldn't be surprising seeing someone was just eating ramen. But it was really convenient that commercial came out at the same time as those movies though. I'm overthinking this.

Obviously everyone gets along with Kaito. He's quiet! Silent. This man doesn't waste his time arguing with anyone, especially not with Kizzy.

i can see rocky probing to make sure the women at daruma’s place are being treated respectfully. because he’ll kick hyuga’s ass if they’re not.

my name is still, unfortunately, very popular and there is a decent handful of famous people with my name, spelt the same way, so i get comparisons about it. like ‘oh, like the singer?’. i kinda wish my parents had gone with their first choice and called me ‘paige’.

i can only see myself using a ‘classic’ name if i can swing an interesting personality out of it.

i could see the rascals trying to offer to pay blue for fixing up their stuff, even if blue says it’s a ‘favour’ and she’s fine to do it for free.

i don’t know that she could have cut off her own leg, since she was 10 when she lost her leg. but i could see her getting badly hurt at the complexes since they weren’t exactly well-kept and there were probably some spots where the floors could have been damaged enough to fall through.

rocky has the classic reaction that everyone else had while watching aib; he sees niragi get set on fire and goes ‘finally!’ ….. and then niragi proceeds to show up in season two. and don’t forget last boss/kaito! even though they look nothing alike.

rocky hears the phrase ‘boys will be boys’ and he’s killing you with his mind because he’s in a mature parent space where he can’t physically fight. he’s shooting eye daggers at you. you’re gonna take psychic damage. he’s getting into an argument about it.

murayama wins because of course he does. then waves at his kid in the crowd of children that has shown up to watch, just like ‘hey sweetie, you wanna get ice cream before we go home?’.

any of the leaders show up and the smart dads are to their kids like ‘apologise to that kid right now’. the idiot dads are getting their asses handed to them.

the rascals absolutely have period stuff and changes of clothes - for both themselves and the girls. they’re all respectful and comforting.

kaito isn’t arguing with anyone. he’s just doing whatever kizzy wants him to do. he’s chilling. he’s making heart-eyes at kizzy and relaxing and making no attempts at stopping kizzy from encouraging fun while koo’s annoyed in the bg.

everyone else gets very uncomfortable and just ‘rocky are you …. good?’. koo is standing with the rest of the rascals like ‘ffs’.

naoto went ‘all of my friends get to be in the movies, what about me? :(‘ and then they wrote jesse in and made him all ‘incredible fighter’ and ‘prison gang’ and ‘everyone thinks he’s cool’.

Road To 40 Days

Dear V, Today, I actually said your name out loud because you’re my OG when it comes to a very specific task that I’d be diving in very, very soon. I can imagine you saying, dali-dali lang niyan ihhh. Taradits. Then aya ka ng coffee and yosi then sabak na. I still can’t believe that this weekend is your 40th day on the other side. There goes a heavy sigh IRL followed by a pause. The past days have been a series of sleepless nights because my grandma is nearing her final deadline, so missing you a little extra today makes my already strained shoulders a tad knottier. However, I’d also want to let you know that I am happy that you chose your own version of peace. I salute you for going against what others think is an ultimate defeat. It’s not that I’m celebrating your last goodbye. It’s me hoping that there on the other side, you are beginning something new, and with my twisted yet idealistic inner self, I hope your new chapter is something worth YOUR while. V, the what if’s voices inside me have been tamed because I try my best to find distractions like dressing in neon and bright colors and prints plus donning larger bows than usual. Distractions also include trying to reach out more to people I’ve not been checking on. Mitochondrial eve parasite eve

Eventually you have to try and stop her from stealing the entire donor supply of a sperm bank so she can impregnate herself and give birth to a mitochondrian messiah. She melts a clutch of concert goers into a single gelatinous mass that looks like King Kong if he were made out of SunnyD. The last time you ever see more than a handful of people in the city is when Eve assaults yet another crowd on Christmas Day. Unlike similar schlock like Darkman, though, the game just keeps mutating like one of Eve’s beasts, escalating into odder scenarios as Aya herself keeps getting more and more trapped in the city.Įve is actually the embodiment of a sentient, evolved group of mitochondria - the engine in living cells - that are trying to overthrow the tyrannical rule of the human nucleus. Half urban isolation meets explosion fest like The Rock and half Clive Barker-ian body horror, it really does feel like a vintage piece of cheese pulled right off of USA’s Up All Night with Gilbert Gottfried. If it stopped there and Aya just had to track down Eve in New York, fighting off mutating creatures as she went, Parasite Eve would just be another eerie high concept action horror fitting of its era. If painter Patrick Nagel and The Babadook director Jennifer Kent were in charge of crafting the worst Freudian anxiety nightmare you’d ever have, it would still be less outlandish than the beginning of Parasite Eve. That’s also when the rats in the building start turning into hog-sized freaks with three-pronged whip tails that shoot fire. Her arms twist and extend into dark claws, her legs are replaced by a curving, coarse tail as she floats in mid-air ranting about how the mitochondria are starting a revolution. The singer then warps into Eve, our monster antagonist. This is one of Parasite Eve’s only scenes where New York is populated beyond Aya and her allies from the 17th Precinct and everyone happens to be on fire. They arrive at Carnegie Hall for an opera, but as the show begins with a wailing, wordless song, everyone in the theater save Aya and the singer on stage starts to burn. On Christmas Eve in 1997, NYPD detective Aya Brea goes on a date with an overeager man who’s never named. In trying to make a shorter, more digestible delivery system for its technological prowess, Square produced something weirder than anything they’d made before. Parasite Eve was an attempt to streamline the concept of a role-playing game - strategic, evocative games that take dozens of hours to unfold their action and plot - so it could more seamlessly integrate with the lushly animated, Pixar short-style story sequences that Square was revolutionizing on the PS1. (Is it a movie? Is it one of those VHS board games? These were valid questions in the ‘90s and they still are unless you’re the sort of person that immediately understands what “RPG” stands for.) That awkward moniker was a mission statement. Square called it a “cinematic RPG,” a weird genre signifier that raises more questions than it answers. That’s the New York in Parasite Eve.ĭeveloped by SquareSoft and released in 1998 for the original PlayStation, Parasite Eve remains an eminently playable, bizarre experiment as beguiling as its setting. New York at rest feels like a dream space made flesh, a place both alien and familiar, isolating and enveloping. All the speed and fury of 8 million people pushing and yelling between the cars and the sirens falls away into a rumbling susurrus, half noise and half feeling. It’s eerie the first time you experience it, coming home in the small hours or walking out the door before the sun comes over the East River. Everything slows for a while, neighborhood by neighborhood, the city’s cardiovascular system easing down just like a human body at the end of the day. It rests fitfully, ready to rise at the crash of a car, the wail and fade of ambulance sirens mixing with the sharp bleat of drunk laughter filtering up from the sidewalk at 2 a.m., but it does in fact slumber. Parasite Eve knows the truth: New York sleeps.
