I was looking forward to visiting the B&O Railroad Museum in Oakland, MD yesterday, but unfortunately it was closed.  Note to me: plan ahead.  Like so many of Central Appalachia’s lovely little mountain towns, Oakland’s history and culture are inextricably bound to the Baltimore and Ohio railroad line that hauled coal and timber out of the mountains starting in mid to late 1800′s. Railroad buffs will love this museum, and the town offers various offbeat shops, an awesome farmers market, and other local institutions, including Englanders’ throwback soda shop and lunch counter cum collectables shop. The blueberry pancakes are bomb.

You know, Silver and Black has my mind gears whirlin! I wonder how the trains of the Strasburg RR, and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania get along. The United Railroad Historical Society of NJ. The B&O museum! Tennessee Valley, North Carolina Transportation Museum, Museum of the American Railroad, California State Railroad Museum, Nevada State Railroad Museum, Colorado Railroad Museum the possibilities! The Grand Canyon Railway, the Niles Canyon Rwy, Durango & Silverton, Cumbres and Toltec, on and on and on!
Oh, totally! DJ and I sometimes have moments of lunacy flights of fancy where we imagine our letters getting the attention of other transportation museums, how we'd handle their rosters and how it would connect with the already-established lore. Nothing serious, mind, just a fun "what if".
Out of personal investment not related to the letters, we keep a weather eye on the St Louis Transportation Museum (Silver Charger is there alongside another Russian Decapod like Frisco 1630, and of course Big Boy 4006), as well as the Mark Twain Zephyr restoration project. The news of Flying Yankee going up for sale is also something we've been watching with interest. Looks like the Flying Yankee Association put in a bid a few days ago, which is good news!
This is the thing I love about train stuff, you can get invested in so many different aspects of the culture and hobby and never run out of material. For us, it's been the preservation aspect and learning about the local history of not just the trains, but the museums themselves. It's been a blast, and I'm tickled that your imagination is just as inspired as ours was by the possibilities!

B&O #600 "J. C. Davis" por Kevin Madore Por Flickr: Built in 1875 by the B&O's Mount Clare Shops, the B&O #600 was the first 2-6-0 "Mogul" type ever rostered by the railroad. Designed to haul express passenger trains and mail, this engine was also occasionally assigned to freight service. It apparently acquired the name "J. C. Davis" in 1893 and continued to serve the B&O until its retirement in 1926. Along with several other artifacts, it was exhibited at the 1927 Fair of the Iron Horse. This engine is one of several historic artifacts that were severely damaged during the 2003 roundhouse roof collapse at the museum. It was meticulously restored and returned to the rebuilt roundhouse in 2016.

B&O #147 "Thatcher Perkins"
flickr
B&O #147 "Thatcher Perkins" by Kevin Madore Via Flickr: This pretty 10-wheeler was built in 1863 at the B&O Mount Clare shops. Designed by Thatcher Perkins, the B&O's Master Mechanic at the time, this engine served during the US Civil War, hauling Federal Troops and supplies. It is one of a very few such locomotives that survives in preservation. During its working life, it carried the number 147 and never had any formal name. After its retirement in 1892, the railroad decided to preserve this engine. When it was exhibited at the 1927 Fair of the Iron Horse, the railroad chose to honor its designer by naming it "Thatcher Perkins" and it was exhibited with the number 117. Today, it is still referred to as "Thatcher Perkins", but is restored in livery and road number which it carried during its working career. This engine is one of several historic artifacts that were severely damaged during the 2003 roundhouse roof collapse at the museum. It was meticulously restored and returned to the rebuilt roundhouse in 2010.

Day 7: Chesapeake & Ohio Allegheny
Info from Wikipedia:
The Chesapeake and Ohio H-8 was a class of 60 2-6-6-6 steam locomotives built by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio between 1941 and 1948 and operated until the mid 1950s. The locomotives were among the most powerful steam locomotives ever built and hauled fast and heavy freight trains for the railroad and two have been preserved, Nos. 1601 and 1604.
Built for hauling freight through the Allegheny Mountains, the locomotives were given the nickname "Alleghenies". Each H-8 cost around $230,000. They could operate an 11,500-ton coal train at up to 45 mph and up to 60 mph pulling passenger trains. They also had the heaviest axle load of any steam locomotive, with a maximum axle load of 86,700 lbs. Gene Huddleston's book, "C&O Power", reports tests of the C&O with a dynamometer car indicating momentary readings of 7,498 hp (5.6 MW) with readings between 6,700 to 6,900 hp (5.0 to 5.1 MW) at about 45 mph (72 km/h). No one has published a higher dynamometer horsepower for any steam locomotive. The locomotive was built to power coal trains on the 0.57% eastward climb from White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia to Alleghany, Virginia. With one at the front and another at the back, 11,500-ton coal trains left Hinton, WV and were at full throttle from White Sulphur Springs to the top of the grade at Alleghany. C&O's 2-6-6-6s also handled coal trains from West Virginia to Columbus, Ohio. Huddleston says that 23 locomotives were equipped with steam piping for heating passenger trains. Upon dieselisation, retirement started in 1952 and by 1956, all of the Alleghenies have been retired.
No. 1642 suffered a crown sheet failure and subsequent boiler explosion at Hinton, WV in June, 1953. The crew did not survive the blast.
Two Alleghenies have been preserved:
No. 1601 was retired in 1956 and donated to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan where it has been on display indoors since.
No. 1604 was initially sent to C&O's scrap lines behind their diesel shops at Russell, Kentucky upon retirement. It was then donated to the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke in 1969 where it was displayed next to N&W 1218. On November 4th, 1985, it was partially damaged by a flood, which washed away the ground under it and nearly turned the locomotive over. In 1987, parent company Norfolk Southern did a cosmetic overhaul on it at their Roanoke Shops before it was sent to Baltimore to be displayed as the centerpiece of the then Mount Clare Junction shopping center which was adjacent to the B&O Railroad Museum. In 1989, the shopping center donated it to the museum, where it presently resides.

Streamliner Study por Erie Limited Por Flickr: Streamliners of the diesel and steam variety rest side-by-side at the B&O Railroad Museum. While steam locomotive C&O 490 was technically built before the diesel, it wasn't streamlined until 1947 when it was also extensively rebuilt. The EMC EA (B&O 51) was built 10 years prior in 1937. The EA sparkles as it was recently restored to its as-delivered appearance.
