Addicted/Heroin/Shangyin Fix It
What if Bai Luo Yin had really stood up to Gu Hai after the first kidnapping, redefining their relationship? A fix-it where Gu Hai must face the consequences of his actions.
Tumblr media
Gu Hai felt vaguely sick. He reached up as if to hit him.
Bai Luo Yin shifted his gaze. For a moment, Gu Hai thought he saw fear flicker through his eyes. But then, with resolution, he lifted his head again. “Hit me…” he muttered. “Go ahead.”
Gu Hai froze.
“But we are done.”
The way he said it—with clear, unshakable determination—it carved into Gu Hai’s chest like a knife. He let his hand fall.

Fifteen episodes of Addicted (Heroin) complete.
I had a lot of thoughts while watching.
Like the WTF spectrum of things. Gu Hai cutting Bai Luo Yin's jacket. Gu Hai slipping sleeping pills into Bai Luo Yin's water. Gu Hai being repeatedly physically aggressive with Bai Luo Yin. Gu Hai having a girlfriend but still pursuing Bai Luo Yin. Gu Hai having a loose grasp on consent and boundaries as practical concepts. Gu Hai's obsessive, possessive, and excessive behavior. Non-students just walking into schools, into classrooms. Actual students just walking into other classrooms at any given time. A student knowing the results of another student's medical exam. High school-aged people getting (or being allowed to get) plastered (don't care what the minimum drinking age might be, because high school). And the sheer hypocrisy of Jiang Yuan.
I had a lot of thoughts after watching.
A distant father who allowed an open bank account to parent in his stead, a never-heard-no life, and suspicions regarding a mother's death just floating in the atmosphere are not the makings of a well-rounded, emotionally stable, socially adjusted individual. Gu Hai was at a disadvantage. I thought he had the kind of emotional tunnel vision that tends to develop in people who don't want to be hurt or vulnerable again. The kind of single-minded self-preservation that has the potential to make casualties of anyone they cross paths with, even the people they hold dearest.
I thought Gu Hai genuinely cared for Bai Luo Yin, but I also thought that when his desperation to remain detached crashed into whatever it was about Bai Luo Yin that appealed to him, he broke, completely disconnected himself from all reason. A guy who could take or leave anything finding something/someone he felt that he could not live without. How does he cope?
I thought the title was perfect, because Gu Hai was like a functioning addict; still maintaining his day to day life, but gradually distancing himself further from social relationships, having the occasional public slip up, and just doing increasingly more desperate things to not only get a fix, but to try to make it so that the fix supply was never-ending.
I thought that Bai Luo Yin was also responsible for the situation they were in. No will always mean no. But when you know someone wants you the way Gu Hai wanted Bai Luo Yin and you don't feel the same or you can't even allow yourself to entertain the thought, you don't keep them around. Bai Luo Yin couldn't help seeing Gu Hai at school, but he wasn't afraid of Gu Hai, he wasn't a pushover, and it wasn't a blackmail situation. Gu Hai showed his true self from the beginning and, after a certain point, it was clear that Gu Hai was serious about his advances and had absolutely no plans of pulling back or changing his mind, so their interactions outside of school were mostly consensual--it's difficult to stop someone from showing up at your house, but it's up to you whether they are welcomed in or not.
I thought about what Bai Luo Yin was struggling against all that time. Because they were both men? The obligation he felt towards his father? I don't know.
He had every right to refuse Gu Hai's advances, but he knew they were going to happen, because Gu Hai was shameless (and not always in an endearing way) about what he wanted from Bai Luo Yin and hardly ever let what he considered an opportunity slip by. So why did he continue to allow Gu Hai to hang around, in his home, in his bed? Why did he go to Gu Hai's place? Why did he allow Gu Hai to continue to act on his sense of entitlement?
I thought that Bai Luo Hai was testing Gu Hai's sincerity. There are things that happen and you could benefit from them even if they weren't done specifically for you. You can still feel avenged or satisfied when someone that has wronged you has met with some horrible fate even if it wasn't a result of any actions you took or that were taken on your behalf. Was Gu Hai just a jackass all the way around? Would he flirt with, bother, or pursue anyone within arm's reach? Was he just some bored rich kid and I was his most recent target? Can I risk it only to find out that it was just a game to him? Or is this really all about how he feels about me?
Though after it was proven tenfold that Gu Hai was 100% all about Bai Luo Yin, he still could not bring himself to admit, in thought or words, how he felt about Gu Hai, only in deed. I thought that his refusals were not just for show, but that he truly could not settle in himself which he wanted to win out. He lived in a continuous state of cognitive dissonance.
I also thought that the way Gu Hai gushed about Bai Luo Yin's abilities and achievements was a sign that he really did see him and not just as a conquest. But despite his genuine affection for him, Gu Hai's displays of entitlement did not bode well for their future. Would he be able to chill the fuck out or would Bai Luo Yin's refusal to explicitly admit he also wanted Gu Hai continue to stoke Gu Hai's uneasiness and uncertainty? But what if Bai Luo Yin actually said, in words, that he wanted or even loved Gu Hai? Would that really settle Gu Hai's anxiety? What would it take for him to feel secure in their relationship?
Then I had some thoughts about the show as a whole.
What's with that ending? That can't be the end. Oh, the show was banned and the last few episodes never aired. I see. I thought it was a shame because even though the story was a clusterfuck of problematic behavior, I was invested and I was curious about how the story would redeem itself so that it would end with something that resembled a healthy or healthy-adjacent relationship.
Lo and behold: the novels (and a scant attempt at fan comic adaptation?)...
So I thought I'd pick up where the series ended (c 119), but I went back a few chapters instead (c 112, I think). I noted a few differences and then continued reading through to chapter 127. At which point I realized that the story will never redeem itself for me.
No, I did not forget about the kidnapping, but I know that while it definitely does not have to, there is a possibility that there will be that one event in a BL production that has the aftertaste of pre-2015 BL--before a greater part of the industry accepted that same-sex relationships do not have to center around sexual trauma. Most comic/manga/manhwa/manhua stories are about tragedy or the aftermath, so you can't really escape trauma, but BL... Though it has thankfully been suffering from ED over the last decade, BL still has something of a hard-on for sexual trauma. So, I'm well aware these things are a possibility going in, so I set my expectations accordingly. I don't let it slide, so much as I understand that this is the story being told and assess it within that context. And along with expectations, I also have limits. They are specific to story in question. Where it feels egregious and can only be considered abuse porn--abuse of the characters and abuse of the audience. Or it's gone past the point of redemption and there's no way that after all of this I could accept them still being together. Everything becomes a lie and I immediately detach from the story.
My enthusiasm waned drastically and I felt the first pull of detachment before the end of c 127.
How do you get past the guy that claimed he was your boyfriend and you didn't correct him sending two military dudes to stalk you and your ex-girlfriend and then the flunkies deciding that you should also get your ass beat? How do you get passed the guy who said that other than your dad no one would care for you more raping you in front of your ex-girlfriend and his two lackeys? You don't.
My brain is not so elastic that it can stretch that far. But I needed total detachment, so I skimmed though the next few chapters looking for their reconciliation, because I knew it would happen, and I knew I would be disgusted, and I was thoroughly so by the end of c 132.
So, if that is the story being told, I was no longer the target audience, so I excused myself.
I've watched two other series since then and one was so cute that it nearly cleansed my soul. But I'm not yet completely over Addicted. Not because I have lingering headcanons about a not so fucked up relationship and not because the show ended abruptly. I'm not over it because it's a shame that it was one of the few BL productions that I didn't have to excuse the bad/poor/unintentionally campy acting in order to fully enjoy it. They are so few and far between, so I'm disappointed that good acting was wasted on something I can no longer enjoy.

Round 1: Teh and Oh Aew Underwater Kiss (I Told Sunset About You) vs Gu Hai and Bai Luo Yin Drunk Kiss (Addicted)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Submitted Reasons Under Cut]
Teh and Oh Aew Underwater Kiss: "this was iconic, it changed the game, no one was the same afterwards, it made underwater kisses what they are today, Teh only being able to kiss Oh Aew when they’re underwater and hidden, the symbolism, the angst, all of it is insane"
Gu Hai and Bai Luo Yin Drunk Kiss: "The actors showed everyone how it should be done - in 2016! The kiss still looks amazing in 2023. The emotions are high - Luo Yin finally accepts his attraction to Gu Hai and gives in to his feelings. The soundtrack to this scene is also so good ("Trouble I'm In" by Twinbed), which makes the whole scene PERFECT."

Only time will tell…
To Be Continued

Vampire Project (BounPrem)
Wabi Sabi's My Broccoli only now... vampires.
Wandee Godday
GMMTV and AllThis Entertainment producing a very pulp offering for GMMTV with new pair GreatInn doing high heat Boxer meets surgeon. It features a one night stand, fake relationship, and all the cheesiest of tropes. Also features Drake, Podd, and Thor+ pretty boy (be still my heart). This is totally my kind of BL even if it actually isn't GMMTV's style of BL, so I'm intrigued. Trailer here.
We Are (PondPhuwin)
GMMTV's university friendship Bl featuring PondPhuwin, WinnySatang, AouBoom, MarcPawin - basically ALL in the good kind of messy friendship group (so more My Engineer and less Only Friends). Looks a bit like the Kiss series but everyone is gay. I'm IN! Trailer here.
A reminder we had c. 136 BLs release in 2023 but c. 55 that did not get made.
That seems about right.
Of those announced we seem to get about 2/3 actually released for the year we are told they'll release in.

Shui Long Yin 《水龙吟》 - What we know so far about this massive project
By now many of you have heard about Shui Long Yin 《水龙吟》, Luo Yunxi's upcoming and third project with the studio behind Till the End of the Moon. Here's my read on the announcement earlier.
Tumblr media
1. Good news - It's going to be largely the same creative team behind TTEOTM.
You have Wang Yirong as Lead Producer & Artistic Director, Huang Wei as Costume Designer, Wang Haiqi as Action Director, Tsang Mingfai as Makeup Director, Huatian for World Concept (also known for Ashes of Love and the Untamed). Basically, we'll see the return of the brilliant minds behind the Dunhuang-inspired costumes and hour-long epic fight sequences.
It's a good sign they're holding most of the team together. A lot of great directors, like Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton, David Cronenberg, work with the same creative talent over and over again. There's certainly an argument that you produce better work when you collaborate with people you trust and know well.
2. Up and coming Director Chen Zhoufei will make up some of the deficiencies of TTEOTM in the cinematography and lighting departments.
Chen Zhoufei started out as a cinematographer in films with the likes of Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou. More recently he directed The Forbidden Flower (2023) and Double Tap (2021), which, if nothing else, is beautifully and stylistically shot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's interesting they've moved away from the old school Hong Kong directors they used in Immortality and TTEOTM. Directors from the TVB system are known to be more experienced, scrappy, and reliable when it comes to working within budget (which is why they're favored for big xianxia productions), but they've also been criticized for falling behind on technical execution and artistry.
It is as the industry article I shared predicted - Otters Studio is a relatively inexperienced player, but they can quickly close their gaps by bringing new blood to the team.
3. They're bringing a new Art Director, Zheng Chen from Lost You Forever.
This isn't all that surprising given that Luan Hexin, TTEOTM's Art Director, is with Huanyu, Bai Lu's management company. (In fact there was a bit of real life drama when Yu Zheng, Bai Lu's boss, publicly called out TTEOTM's producer for not refuting false rumors that Bai Lu was only cast because the production wanted Luan Hexin, arguably Huanyu's biggest asset, as part of her "dowry".) Now it's sad to see award-winning Luan go, but he is best for authentic period sets and IMO not the most suited for xianxias.
Instead, they've tapped Zheng Chen, who most recently worked on Lost You Forever, which I have yet to watch. With that said, some of the sets look great to me, with bold use of colors, and I can already see this pairing well with Chen Zhoufei's aesthetics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. This time they're not working with screenwriter He Fang, instead going with Lin Conghe (unofficial)
He Fang is the lead screenwriter behind TTEOTM and Immortality (everyone who's read Immortality's screenplay will know it's all but a guaranteed hit) and in my opinion one of Otter's greatest assets. She's brilliant at staying loyal to the spiritual core of source novels, while weaving convoluted plot points through a more robust background story and logic.
It's a slight disappointment that she won't be back, but it's also not entirely surprising. TTEOTM and Immortality are both big, female-oriented fantasy romance IPs. Meanwhile Shui Long Yin's IP is quite dated, lesser known, and incomplete, so I'd expect that the drama will only be loosely based on the original. While we don't know much about Lin Conghe, he did recently work on the Blood of Youth sequel, where he was the lead screenwriter alongside author Zhou Munan, so he might actually be a better choice for this genre (xuanhuan wuxia).
Tumblr media
5. The way HunanTV & Mango announced the drama is unusually high profile, indicating that this is one of the platform's biggest projects.
It's rare to have one of China's biggest hosts announce a new drama that hasn't even started shooting or released any details yet live on prime time TV. (Usually a drama's official announcement comes out on the day of its booting ceremony, if not during its production or at its wrap ceremony.) It's even rarer for a costume drama to announce a TV platform at this stage. These days it's quite difficult for costume fantasies to get a coveted TV airing slot given genre restrictions and additional censorship requirements. Typically you do not find out officially whether it will air on TV until literally right before it airs.
Before the official announcement, rumors have already been circulating that there's a bidding war behind the scenes for this project, with Mango and its parent HunanTV outbidding Youku in the end. Mango/HunanTV is already the market leader in variety shows, but is behind the other three platforms in scripted content. Apparently, they've recently received an injection of funding to shore up their drama department and now investing in tentpole projects that can help them gain share. Clearly they saw what TTEOTM did for Youku.
6. There's another interesting player in the mix: China Mobile and its subsidiary Migu.
Tumblr media
It appears that China Mobile (one of the most valuable companies in China and a state-owned enterprise) has invested in the drama, which will be made available on its online video platforms. Apparently, the last time China Mobile invested in a drama, they sent text messages to every user to publicize it when it aired. Now not sure if this will happen (it's not patriotic drama after all), but they've already been promoting the drama through their gazillion affiliate social media accounts. Either way, it should be a good thing for the drama's distribution to have such an influential backer given Mango's lower daily active user.
7. They're making it super clear that Luo Yunxi is going to be the dominant male lead in this drama
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the first Weibo post, they only announced the title, Luo Yunxi, and the airing platforms. In the second Weibo post, where they announced the rest of the creative team, they still did not announce the other actors! Of course, this is likely because Luo Yunxi's company (which is really just him) bought the source novel's IP and is credited as a co-producer. (They don’t have any production capabilities at all, so Otter will likely be quarterbacking this.)
This suggests, like many who have read the novel already know, that Luo Yunxi will have by far the biggest part. The other roles, including the female lead role, will likely be smaller and revolve around the main character.
8. Shui Long Yin is already generating a lot of hype.
To date its Weibo announcement racked up >1M likes (more than double that of TTEOTM). There's already a very active Douban group debating all the rumors, most importantly whether Luo Yunxi will use a wig or his real hair (a highly divisive topic). The new drama has even been reported by China Daily, China's state media facing the international community, which is again exceedingly rare. China Daily doesn't usually report on entertainment news, and most hit shows don't get mentioned even after airing.
Tumblr media
There's always a big risk with productions with this much anticipation so early in the process, from fan wars and disruptive stalking on set to accusations propagated by competitors that can invite more state scrutiny. Fingers crossed that the team knows what they're doing and can weather all the storms that will undoubtedly come its way.
9. Finally, I remain cautiously excited.
Production quality will likely be great, with such a strong creative team and financial backers with deep wallets. My main worry is that it'll be beautiful, but boring. For this genre (xuanhuan wuxia or basically wuxia with high fantasy elements), it's really important that the story moves fast and the underdog hero keeps outsmarting or outfighting everyone else in a way that gives viewers a sense of exhilaration. It'd be all too easy for the story to get bogged down by a large cast of unmemorable characters and a meandering plot. Otters Studio is usually great at delivering fast-paced high drama (just based on TTEOTM and the screenplay of Immortality), but they're working with a different screenwriter this time and it's not easy to be a consistent hit maker. Let's hope they stick to their intuition and continue to present stories and characters that excite viewers.

Looking back on my first year as a c-drama fan!
This year I fell - first down a flight of stairs - and then (because I couldn't walk properly for a few weeks) down a rabbit hole of cdramas!
In total, I have watched 28 dramas since May. I actually finished 17 of them. I re-watched 8 of them at least once. My most rewatched show is Till The End Of The Moon, followed by Love Is Sweet and The Untamed!

Shows I loved
Till The End of The Moon: This drama triggered my hyperfixation, and I still love it so much. Tantai Jin became my new obsession.
Love is Sweet: This one surprised me because I don't usually care for romantic dramas. It made me more open to different genres.
The Untamed: I watched this for the first time in 2019, and now I can appreciate it even more.
The Sleuth of Ming Dynasties: It took me several tries to get into the drama because the political setting was too complicated. I'm glad I didn't give up. Wang Zhi became one of my favorites!
New Life Begins: I was just looking for something light in between and was quite surprised how much I liked the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things I learned as a newbie:
Cdramas are an acquired taste. Sometimes it's worth going back to a drama that you initially gave up on.
To avoid spoilers, it's best to skip the intro and especially the outro.
I love my characters unhinged.
Apparently it is okay to share leaks from filming.
Never believe anything that comes from yxh accounts.
Shippers are toxic in any fandom.
C-drama fans are a bit older than K-pop fans, but they can be just as unhinged and have trouble distinguishing between how to treat actors and the fictional characters they play.
My ADHD is better regulated when I watch shows in a foreign language while reading the subtitles. I don't get bored watching TV, which is rare!
Shows I dropped, and what I learned from it:
Hidden Love: I still don't like romances that have no significant plot beyond the relationship. Especially if I don't care about the characters at all.
Back from the Brink: Sometimes dramas that start well become an unwatchable, rage-inducing mess halfway through, and it's not worth sticking it out to the end.
Beauty of Resilience: I'm a character-driven audience. If the characters aren't compelling and the story isn't interesting, I don't care about the show.
Ashes of Love: I hate childish FL with baby voices and naive personalities. I need better written female characters. I'm on my 3rd attempt to watch this show and I only have a handful of episodes left, so I'll actually make it to the end (eventually).
I've dropped a lot more shows and actually watched some to the end that I didn't like very much in the end, but those are the ones I learned the most from.
Tumblr media
What will stay with me:
Tantai Jin: I'm still obsessed with this character. He is everything I need in a fictional character.
Luo Yunxi: This will come as no surprise to anyone who follows me, but my obsession with TTJ soon extended to Luo Yunxi.
Bai Lu & Sun Zhenni: While I appreciate both of them as actors, it's their fun and uninhibited personalities that made me fall in love with them!!
Costumes: I adore the detailed costumes and hanfu styles, and do prefer costume dramas to modern ones.
Food & drinks: I'm now looking into more Chinese foot now and how to cook vegetables in more interesting ways. I also bought "moon cake stamps"... so wish me luck!
New online acquaintances: I have made some new friends online who I can fangirl with to my heart's content!
What I'm looking forward to in 2024:
I'm really looking forward to Luo Yunxi's upcoming dramas, Follow You Heart, Shui Long Yin and Immortality (🤡). I'm also looking forward to Sun Zhenni's first leading role!
There are still many dramas I want to watch, but haven't found the time for. Like A Journey to Love, Goodbye, My Princess, Nirvana in Fire, Then Miles of Peach Blossoms and The Blood of Youth.
I'm not sure what else I'll post here next year. Probably more reviews and content related to my favourite actors. Let's see if something triggers my hyperfixation soon!
Happy New Year!

The Eighth Sense inspired Top BL characters who were drunk drunk on screen ( played by actors who did it so well I think they woke up in a ditch at least once in their life.)
Taiwan : Gao Shi De in We best love 2. This man was drunk AND desperate AND horny. Sam Lin does everything well.
Thailand : Mark in Love Mechanics. Lord that boy had a drinking problem. War knew what he was doing.
China : Bai Luo Yin. Chinese teenage binge drinking so realistic you need to look away. Timmy Xu murdered his drunk scenes.
Korea : JAE WON. Errybody and their mommas has a drinking problem on that show but that hoe is a classic Korean terror.

Introducing: The Which MXTX Character do You Most Want to Study Like a Little Bug Tournament Bracket
Tumblr media
Starting February 20, 2023 (American time), I'll be running a tournament via tumblr polls to determine once and for all which Mo Xiang Tong Xiu webnovel character the fanbase most wants to study like a little bug.
FAQ:
What do you mean by "most want to study like a little bug"?
Which character makes you want to pick them up, put them in a glass jar, examine them with a little magnifying glass, and poke them with a stick to see how they react? Which character is so so small and pathetic and also truly deeply bizarre? If you don't get what I'm talking about, this poll may not be for you.
Why on earth are you doing sixty-four characters?
A perfectly even bracket has to have 16, 32, or 64 starting contestants, and since there were 33 characters that I really wanted to include, I decided to Commit.
What is wrong with you?
Yeah.
If you'd like to either search for or blacklist posts related to this event, all of mine will be tagged with "MXTX bugpoll."
You can find the full list of matches under the readmore. Happy voting!
