the thing about the benedetta movie is that you could make the argument that a number of the events that transpired in her life parallel the life of Jesus (trying to suck on Mary's breast, dying and coming back to life, that girl who killed herself after trying to expose benedetta, bartolomea betraying her and being revealed through an act of intimacy, etc) and respectfully these live in my head rent free but also they should have committed to the bit more and drive home the point of "is she actually the second coming of Christ"

BENEDETTA (2021) dir. Paul Verhoeven 17th-century Tuscany, Italy. As the sinister threat of the Plague looms over Europe, the sincerely devout eight-year-old novice, Benedetta Carlini, is brought into the Theatine Convent of the Mother of God in Pescia as a bride for Jesus Christ. Eighteen long years later, as ominous whispers of disputable miracles scandalise the cloistered sisters, a test of faith awaits deeply pious Benedetta in the shape of bruised, abused, and earthly Bartolomea: a young woman fleeing her violent father. Now, while under the vigilant eye of cynical Abbess Felicita, fleeting glimpses of the forbidden fruit invite a tentative intimacy, ungovernable desires, and intense diabolical obsessions in, and suddenly, the holy signs of faith are manifest in Sister Benedetta's body. Mother Superior Benedetta Carlini, an Italian Catholic nun accused of being a heretic and of having sexual relations with another woman in her convent, Sister Bartolomea Crivelli, ALSO fucking received the stigmata.
Lesbians are just closer to god than the rest of us, I guess.

Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy by Judith C. Brown - 4/5
Having read Saint Hildegard of Bingen (12th century), the disparity in reactions to female mystics pre- and post-plague is striking (not to mention non-nuns, like Jeanne d’Arc and Margery Kempe in the 14th and 15th centuries.) Benedetta Carlini lived from 1590 to 1661, truly in the Renaissance, so though a lot of her experiences are common with Saint Hildegard, instead of being the Oprah of her day she was scrutinized and discredited (ultimately, never reaching sainthood.) Something Paul Verhoeven’s film holds in common with Immodest Acts is that it maintains that, whether or not Benedetta’s miracles were fabricated, she was a very devout nun. She faked her stigmata wounds, but at the same time, what could compel someone to such extreme self-infliction save for religious frenzy? So ironically, religious lobbyists picketing the film Benedetta has an eerie similarity to what Benedetta herself went through at the hands of the Catholic church: a counter-reformation spirit of quashing mysticism in favor of bureaucracy and order.
The subtitle The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy is interesting because in the grand scheme of things, the lesbian part of this book is not a focus (unlike the film). The highlight of this book though, was actually its introduction, not any of the biographical information. In the introduction, Brown very concisely explains the medieval and renaissance attitudes towards homosexuality: it was seen as more of a sin than rape or pedophilia because the latter two upheld “God’s natural order,” or male hegemony, while homosexuality in both sexes presented a challenge towards it. However, the Catholic church was more concerned with male sexuality, seemingly because they just couldn’t figure out how lesbians even worked. Female homosexuality was so outside of their phallic worldview that they didn’t even think it was possible! This introduction was eye-opening because it talked about issues that affect our society today, not just Renaissance Italy.
As a biography, Immodest Acts suffers because we never get a glimpse of Benedetta’s actual personality. Brown does a good job of explaining the sociopolitical factors that led to these events (for example, mystics being common for backcountry folk but discouraged by the Vatican in light of the counter-reformation) but very little about Benedetta or Bartolomea as living breathing people. To be fair, this is very hard to do when the only sources available are legal records… but when this is the case, for the pure sake of entertainment, I suppose I prefer fictionalized narratives like Verhoeven’s adaptation.

TOAD POPE. PLEASE.
>:) as u wish
so the concept for this is that the pope is a toad. like he is the normal pope but he is also the toad (i think i will call him pope innocent)
and everyone else in the vatican (wartican) is a human and they treat the toad pope with all the same reverence as they do the human pope. when he goes out in his popemobile he is a tiny toad in a human sized popemobile (unless people think it is funnier if it is a tiny tiny little toad sized popemobile?????????? but then who's driving the car...)
anyway the story is about how he wants to marry god.
the inspiration for this is threefold:
when I was at university I studied a medieval manuscript called the roman de fauvel which is a story where a horse becomes the king of france. he proceeds to pester the lady fortune and she instead fobs him off onto the lady vainglory (coward). the moral of the story is that he is the antichrist.
another story i have been captivated with recently is the one of benedetta and bartolomea, a pair of catholic nuns from the 1600s who teamed up to pretend that benedetta was being posessed by jesus so that they could have sex (nuns are married to jesus so it would be okay).
my third inspiration is the inspiration i usually have which is a silly conversation with friends (we were talkin about how u kiss a frog and he turns into a prince):
Tumblr media
so yeah this was the genesis of the idea and then i was like what if it had the vibes of these other 2 things i'm obsessed with???
Anyway here's a snippet:
"Your Holiness," Cardinal Montalti murmured, prostrating himself. He held a bowl smaller than the width of his palm in both hands, which he lay before the throne. Within it there were mealworms, fat and plump and writhing. Innocent contemplated for a moment, before hopping off his seat to flick one into his tongue. He chewed for a moment, thoughtfully. Then he said, "Get up, idiot." Montalti released himself from his bow, with just a slight purse of his lips. It was always amusing to see his shoal of red [somethings] attempting deference when they towered over him - this one did it by ducking his head and folding his hands before him like a schoolboy. It didn't suit him. Innocent took another mealworm. "Put me back in my chair," he said, and Montalti crouched down so that he could hop onto his outstretched hands. Once he was back in place, Innocent tilted his head. "I've been in conversation with God," he said, and Montalti's eyes bulged like a goldfish, his mouth dropping slightly too, as if to complete the picture. "I think we're really getting to know one another," he added, turning a little to hide his smile. The voice in his head tittered. Oh, is that what you'd call it?
