Attention non-Canadians!
Inspired by this poll on the subject, which (if any) of these other Canadian bands/musicians have you heard of?
(if you recognize more than one, vote for the one you think is the most niche and then tell me in the tags)
I tried to get a decent genre spread, but I almost certainly missed something important. Canadian mutuals if you have any other suggestions hmu, drop your music recs in the tags!

sometimes you need to go back and listen to the music you liked when you were 13 because it's good for you. and no im not talking about like emo nostalgia in this case we have enough posts about that. im talking about dad rock. actually im just talking about barenaked ladies
#idk if i'd call barenaked ladies dad rock per se but every once in a while i'll hear a song and go MAN. I REMEMBER THAT#i had so many oc animatics in my head about this one....#anyway skrunk lore moment but i had a really intense bnl phase for like 8 months in early middle school which explains a lot about 13 y/o me#in a neutral way but like. yeah. anyway go listen to box set for me.#you don't have to listen to anything else even though i still have a great fondness for a lot of it bc it's one of those things where it's#so familiar to me that i don't even know if i think it's good or not. but box set goes hard and i'll stand by that#in the car and hello city and i'll be that girl and spider in my room AND CALL ME CALMLY and blame it on me and alternative girlfriend and#the flag and when i fall and the king of bedside manor and am i the only one.... ohgh#AND YES IT'S BASIC BUT IF I HAD $1000000 IS COZY. IT'S CUTE OK#OH and it's all been done for all your immortal/reincarnation ship needs. well. a certain vibe anyway#and alcohol. and OH MY GOD I FORGOT JANE. AND INTERMITTENTLY and break your heart.... waaaaaaa#man they have way way more albums than i thought they had#i can only really speak for gordon born on a pirate ship and maybe you should drive actually but. i like those#or i Did like them. havent relistened but even looking at the titles is making me giggly like... i forgot some of these#ALSO SHOEBOX IS A FRIENDS SONG?? WHUH?#or maybe it was used in friends? idk. no thoughts on friends but they did music for just the dumbest shit. ignore that for me please#ANYWAY. going to go listen to all of that now bc im having a moment. if you listen to it and don't like it um. don't think less of me lol <3

it's very fun to watch u get into bnl bc my parents rlly like them, so all the songs u rb just bring back old memories! I had completely forgot about Another Postcard until u put it on my dash and I suddenly thrown back to being like 6 in the backseat of the car on a cross country roadtrip. it's also fun learning what the songs r about!! (I didn't pick up on much bc I was. y'know. a kid)
ANYWAYS! I support u and I enjoy ur bnl posting :]
That's so cool! ty for letting me know!!
It's extremely weird for me to even think about them being around when I was a kid ngl, despite the fact that I probs EASILY could've been in the exact right demographic for their kids album, lbr-
im glad you're at least not not enjoying it, and hopefully I won't hit on any that u really hated :0

some fantastic notes
started writing this end of June '22 + into July/August but stalled out so i put it away to write birthday fics instead
(i think i stalled out in part bc i had a complete outline - since i was following the movie i knew all the scenes of the fic before i wrote it - and that makes writing very boring. i like knowing the ending, at least vaguely, but the fun comes from discovering the scenes as i write..)
picked it back up in June '23 for.. literally no reason. i think it was like 9pm and i suddenly HAD to write more. then put it away to write my exams lol
(i'm pretty sure i wrote meeting the gang + razor pov + first chase + 1/2 lunch break scenes + dainsleif scene (+ assorted bits) in '22)
when i picked it back up i watched Twister to write basically scene-by-scene, which made it very easy to fill in bits where i was like 'aaaand now they all say things about tornados ¯\_(ツ)_/¯'
chiscara and the sumeru characters weren't in the original draft, and i added the eyepatch stuff, but the basic shape of the story didn't change bc it's just the plot of Twister but they have magic powers lol
it seemed unavoidable that i'd have to do multiple povs to mimic the movie. originally kaeya wasn't gonna get a pov at all but last minute i thought,, as a treat,,, he could close it out
have i mentioned lately how much i enjoy coming up with bg relationships and backstories that are never fully explained in the fic. bc i think it's my favourite thing. btw rosie & dain are having just thee worst sex
after a lot of very stupid googling i decided to just swap to the usa dictionary on gdocs and call that a believable portrait of 90s america
i know margaritaville as a brand/restaurant experience didn't really exist in the 90s but i liked that reference and didn't want to pull it. also didn't want to bother finding a 90s equivalent sry
now i can confidently point to oklahoma on a map(´∀`)
had a lot of difficulty coming up with a title (as usual), but settled on the BNL song ((if i had to justify this pick beyond 'words sound good together' it's 90s music for divorcees))

“Might’ve been more fun to hate you from the opposite end of a pitch than the other side of an article, Crimm.”
Trent gets laid, falls in love, and remembers that football is meant to be fun. Just not quite in that order.

I mean they Are fucking. but in a friendly way., I really don't know how to explain this fic I'm sorry I'm losing my MIND over this show, also yeah hi this is the second fic ive ever posted with a title taken from BNL's upside down, that song fucks idk what to tell u

Lately Spotify has been (accurately) recommending to me a lot of goofy '70s pop songs by artists I've never heard of. Checked wiki before posting this to make sure Dean Friedman wasn't someone I *should* have recognized and
No, he was a one-hit wonder and this is the hit
"It is the only Billboard Top 40 song to contain the word Paramus."
There's also a whole verse about going to Dairy Queen, which is funny because a few years later he had a song banned by the BBC for referencing McDonald's by name in the chorus. The song is named "McDonald's Girl" and BNL sometimes covered it live back before their first big-label album:
youtube
Apparently in 2005 he nearly had a UK tour canceled bc he was going to give away cannabis seeds with album purchases. He backed down and the tour was back on. [citation needed]
He wrote music for the seminal '90s kids' show Eerie, Indiana (by 'seminal' I mean I watched it when I was a kid and it freaked me the hell out, in a way that probably made a long-term impression on my taste in media). Specifically, he's credited with two diegetic jingles. I think this is one of them:

Also, his sister was an executive producer on Blossom

yo why do you hate ed robertson im genuinely curious bc my parents like that band and ive never heard of anyone else who knows them :0
This is not an ask I was expecting to get??? LMAO??? Anyways yeah I’m a huge Barenaked Ladies fan (if you look at the URL of the guy behind this blog you might be able to tell...) but I don’t actually hate Ed Robertson, I just ham up the Ed hate for jokes, as it’s kind of an inner joke within the BNL community. I also like the idea of Goddard gleaning to songs sung by Ed like Odds Are, One Little Slip, and Another Postcard, which slowly transitioned into wanting Ed to play Goddard in the Scythe movie... Yeah. But I don’t hate Ed! He’s a very cool dude who makes very cool music. Some of my favorite BNL songs that he sings are Bank Job (which fits really well with the Tonist gleaning scene at the end of Scythe...), Wind It Up, and Testing 1, 2, 3.

Stunt's weird bc it's like, such an ungainly mix of Serious and Goofy BNL, and like it has some of the highest points of both but they don't really mesh together all that well on this album. But anyway here's probably my third favorite song off it

Using the Unusual; Metaphors and Similes in Creative Writing
while i was getting my bachelor’s in fiction writing, one of the most useful classes i ever took was a poetry class taught by a woman named Mary Leader because she really taught me to examine my prose. poetry, at least in her class, was an excellent way to fully capture the visuals, sounds, and setting of a particular moment in time, which is a skill (i believe) that prose writers can use as well.
but today I’m gonna focus on my particular favorite thing in writing, which is the Unexpected Metaphor or Simile.  (long post, and some really personal takes/analytical perspectives, but i hope this helps some people who want to get more creative with their analogies!)
The Anchor
A good metaphor or simile is one that is based on a single, clear idea.
“But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?  It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief ”
The above passage from Romeo and Juliet is an excellent example of this; Juliet is the sun, and the rest of the metaphor revolves (or orbits) around her, and the rest of the passage has that kind of space/heavenly body theme. Having a clear idea or a clear theme is an excellent starting point for good metaphors or similes, and it can be anything. It can even (and often should) build upon itself, such as the more modern example in the song One Week by Barenaked Ladies.
How can I help it if I think you're funny when you're mad Trying hard not to smile though I feel bad I'm the kind of guy who laughs at a funeral Can't understand what I mean? Well, you soon will I have a tendency to wear my mind on my sleeve I have a history of taking off my shirt
Here, the theme is that the narrator is inappropriately chipper or open at times, which each line building on the abstract idea of the other (even down to the last two lines being about wearing clothes, and I really hope that I’m the first person you’ve ever seen compare BNL to Shakespeare but damn it’s so good.)
Below, I’m going to try to logic this whole thing out in a way that makes sense and makes it easy for you to train your mind how to do this really cool thing as well.
How to Branch Out; A Step By Step Method
we have hundreds and hundreds of well-worn phrases like “as dark as night” “as cold as ice” and etc, and they’re popular bc they’re approachable. most people have seen a dark night or felt the temperature of ice, so it’s immediately understandable. but lets try to take one of these a step further.
1) The Second Thought
so, say you’re trying to trying to describe something that’s cold in temperature; don’t go for Ice, the obvious choice, or snow. Think about something else you’ve felt in your life that’s been cold. Maybe a operating table, or the glass in a window on a November morning. Sometimes the second (or third) thought it the best thought, and using a more selective experience can paint a more vivid picture. “as cold as an operating table” has a definite menacing, uneasy, vulnerable feel to it whereas “as cold as a windowpane in November” could have a feeling of more curiosity or domesticity to it.
2) The Alternate Definition
if you look up ‘cold’ in the dictionary, it will likely list both the definition of something physically lacking heat, or something morally devoid of ‘warmth’ or compassion. let’s once again return to the idea that you’re describing something that is physically cold; consider describing it as morally or emotionally cold instead. “as cold as murder” is one that carries a lot of threat and menace to it (and is probably a little heavy-handed) but you should get the idea.
3) The Dual Purpose
using both of the methods described above together can really give your simile or metaphor some weight. let’s say we have a chill winter day and we want to add a sense of foreboding, darkness or unease; “as cold as an executioner’s blade” works on two different levels for this goal. the first is playing off the Second Thought - ice is cold, yes, but so is metal and steel. the second aspect is drawing from the Alternate Definition, where cold means detached from compassion, and someone tasked with the ritualistic killing of another person is exactly that.
Keeping Your Momentum; Layering and Compounding Similes and Metaphors
when you want to really capitalize on one specific idea or image, such as “cold = death” it’s important for all of your metaphors, similes and even imagery to reflect that idea in some way or another. now, this doesn’t mean restating the same thing over and over again; it means building on a basic idea.
let’s say you are describing a snowy evening where the protagonist is facing something they dread at the end of their route. reflecting their hesitation, their reluctance, and their sense of morbidity is important to set the tone of the piece.
1) Sympathetic Setting
a good way to really make someone feel the weight or emotion in a piece is to have the setting mirror the emotions of the moment. classic examples of this is rain at a funeral, a sunset for a climax of a movie, etc, but nearly any setting can be influenced to fit your tone depending on how its framed in the narration. say that the protag in the above example is seeing other people around town go about their business; instead of just having people around them walking, maybe have them “shuffle uncertainly over the ice” to reflect the protag’s reluctance and fear. they are projecting their feelings on their surroundings, and having those sentiments returned.
2) Contrasting Setting
another good way to emphasize an emotion is to have the setting contrast the mood, or pit the world against the protag. kisses in the rain are a common example (a heated, joyful moment in a cold, wet, usually despair-inducing setting). to pull on the above example, the other people in the city could be described as “gliding in their heavy coats like low-flying crows” to contrast them to the protag (either as carefree like flying birds or as funeral omens).
3) Layering and Repetition
If you’re wanting to really linger on one specific moment or idea, remixing your metaphor or simile and repeating it can be an excellent way of doing so. but with all of these, it’s important to keep in mind your anchoring idea. continuing with our current chilly despairing example, lets have the protagonist looking at the ground. “Above her head, the melting icicles pockmarked the snow below, like a hundred ghoulish faces all clustered beneath the overhang, crying out in pain.”
the first part, the ‘pockmarked snow’ is meant to describe dark holes in white snow. the ‘ghoulish faces’ is a reference to how skulls and ghosts are often stylized as black holes or spots in white, and now that we’ve established a connections between the snow and faces, we can build on this idea by having them cry. if we skipped the middle section, the image doesn’t make as much sense (which in poetry can sometimes be a good thing, because it’s that much more unusual)
Breaking It Down; Applying This Process to Pre-existing Work
i’m a huge sucker for a band called Dry the River. (not a coincidence that words intended to be spoken or sung have such a sense of compacted beauty and meaning to them, IMHO.) so lets analyze this piece below from their song History Book.
Beneath an angry Bible flood, Did you and I first learn to love. In my father's car we came to know. And shivered in our painted clothes and paired like every animal below.
So the first line is pretty clear to anyone familiar with classic Bible stories; the Flood here references Noah, so we can assume that it’s pouring down rain. The next two lines illustrate that these two characters are virgins and teenagers (his father’s car, not his own) and the next line not only tells us their clothes were wet (clinging to their skin as though they were painted on) and that they’re having sex (paired like every animal) but it also has an excellent callback to this kind of religious imagery (every animal below, as though told from God’s perspective.)
That’s probably a little too dense to craft a long narrative out of, but using these ideas to craft specific moments for dramatic tension can really do wonders for your story!
In Conclusion
To TL;DR you can take something as far as you want to go, so long as you start off with a very solid A = B comparison. And that can be something classic like cold = death or something more unusual, and you can even mix ideas (to a degree) as well! Well worn metaphors and cliches are a great starting point, but don’t be afraid to take it one (or more) steps further!

7 Things That Might Make This Weekend’s Juno Awards Memorable
Pop quiz! Who won the Juno for Best Album last year? Obviously, you remember, right? Was it The Weeknd? Shawn Mendes? Drake? They are the biggest acts in Canadian music—if not music generally—so it was probably one of them.
Only it wasn’t. It was actually Leonard Cohen. You remember that big Leonard Cohen song that everyone was talking about last year? That album that you couldn’t escape from? You’d call your local radio station and ask if they could please, please play something by Carly Rae Jepsen or even Justin Bieber, but inevitably they’d tell you they were too busy giving the kids what they wanted: more Leonard Cohen. It’s probably why Cohen’s album also won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance over bands like the Foo Fighters, who no one has heard of.
Actually, I’m sure You Want it Darker is a fine album. And there’s no shame in rewarding an icon in the year that he died. That makes sense. But my point is: nobody remembers who wins awards, especially music awards—and especially, especially Canadian music awards. We can discuss why that is—probably on our little brother site, Title, actually—but since the Junos are happening again this weekend, we thought it would be a good time to highlight a few reasons why this year’s show might actually be memorable. At least for a few days, anyway.
1. Michael Buble is Hosting
Interesting fact about Michael Buble: my 7 year old nephew who lives in New York is a huge fan. It’s not just soccer moms at Christmas! And while my nephew just can’t get enough of his smooth vocals, Buble has always been 100 times more charming than a kid from Burnaby, BC has any right being. Plus, this year he’s coming back from his young son beating cancer, so it’s literally impossible not to be rooting for him.
2. Barenaked Ladies Reunite
Interesting fact about BNL: I can do a mean Stephen Page impression. This secret talent has been useless since Page left the band. This is my personal reason for being excited that the quintessential Canadian adult contemporary alternative rock band is becoming whole again. But, for the rest of Canada it’s probably exciting, too. After all, few bands represent Canada’s place on the world stage better than the catchy non-threatening rockers.
3. Northern Touch All-Stars
Speaking of Title—before the show on Sunday, check out a definitive oral history of the first Canadian hip hop song to actually be, you know, good (with all due respect to Maestro Fresh Wes, of course). It’s been 20 years since you first nodded your head to Rascals, Checkmate, Kardinal, and Thrust…Choclair coming down with the Northern Touch, Baby.
4. City and Colour + Sarah Harmer = Gord Downie
In a performance genetically engineered to make you cry, balladeers Dallas Green and Sarah Harmer will be celebrating the work and life of Gord Downie. If the number of people who watched the Tragically Hip’s farewell concert on CBC is any indication, this will be a performance a lot of people care about.
5. Jann Arden is presenting
Granted, having Jann Arden at a Canadian award show is actually required by law, since she is not only a wonderful singer, but she’s pretty damn funny, too. Still, just because it was inevitable, doesn’t mean it won’t be worth watching. Also, speaking of Jann Arden: next time you hear her breakout hit “Insensitive” imagine it being sung by Metallica. It’d be kind of great.
6. Your Mom will know who Daniel Ceasar and Jessie Reyez are
Two of the biggest up and coming performers happening right now will bring the award show some cool cred. That should be fun. Also fun: realizing that Jessie Reyez isn’t just a Roots model.
7. Michael Buble is also Nominated for Album of the Year
Despite being one of the biggest artists on the planet, Drake gracefully, patriotically hosted the Junos in 2011. He was nominated for six awards and won zero. After that, Drake said he wouldn’t be coming back. And sure, you can argue that that displays poor sportsmanship, but also: you get Drake to host your little award show and you don’t give him anything? That’s just bad business. We’ll see if they do the same thing to Buble.
