What Love Is
read on Ao3
Kyoko wakes up in the middle of the night to an empty bed. Naturally, she has a plethora of guesses as to where Makoto can be, but only one that truly makes sense to her. So she goes to check on him.
--
Kyoko was slowly getting used to waking up beside someone else. It had been terribly awkward and foreign at first, but she would be lying if she said she didn’t understand the appeal of sleeping beside a loved one.
Because of this, it was now rather strange to be alone.
She wasn’t exactly sure what woke her, but there was something quite clear to her even before she opened her eyes; the other side of the bed was unoccupied. Her arm was outstretched, but it lay across cold sheets rather than a warm chest. She opened bleary eyes, blinking as she took in the dark room. Based on the curtains covering the windows, she could tell it was still late, or maybe just early morning. The house was quiet, and she was alone.
Pushing herself to sit up, she rubbed at her eyes, the blanket dropping from her chest and into her lap. There was no use just sitting there and wondering, so she tossed the blankets aside and swung her legs over the edge of the bed, bare feet touching the cold floor. A shiver ran down her spine, but she walked away from the warm bed anyway, pulling one of Makoto’s jackets closer to her body.
Out of their shared bedroom, she glanced down the hallway to the right. The bathroom door wasn’t closed. It had been one of her least likely guesses, but a possibility, nonetheless. Being a detective meant she could imagine many different possibilities when a mystery presented itself. Though this was certainly less of a mystery than what she normally dealt with.
She walked on the balls of her feet, mostly out of habit, keeping her steps quiet against the old wood floor as she headed down the hallway. Her eyes slowly began adjusting to the dark as her mind adjusted to consciousness, becoming more alert the more steps she took. Reaching the end of the hallway proved her first hunch to be correct.
The small, cozy living room was normally dark at this time of night, but the curtains against the window were drawn back, allowing stray beams of moonlight to stream into the room. At first glance, it would seem that the room was empty and that someone had simply just forgotten to draw the curtains, but out of habit, Kyoko always made sure to view things as thoroughly as she was able. And to the side of the couch, peeking just above one of the armrests, was a single cowlick that never stayed down, no matter what.
Quietly, she walked around the couch, making her steps just audible enough so that she would not startle him. Even as she entered the space she knew he would be able to see through the corner of his eye, he didn’t look at her. He was sitting on the floor against the armrest of the couch, knees to his chest, and a blanket pulled around his shoulders. Brown eyes that normally held warmth were dull and glazed, probably staring at nothing in particular despite his head tilted just slightly upward, giving the impression he might have just been looking out the window.
She knew better. She knew him too well.
She would be lying if she said the sight didn’t pull at her heart. Makoto Naegi had been an enigma, the one to defrost her icy heart, and ever since, she had become almost terrifyingly soft. Memories were certainly still hazy, but no one had ever had an effect of her like he had. He was the Ultimate Hope for a reason; and maybe, for that reason, it was difficult to remember sometimes that he was still young. They both were. And no matter how many times she would deny it outwardly, their time at Hope’s Peak had had a terrible effect on both of them. She...was just better at hiding it, though Makoto always worried about her no matter what, even if he couldn’t see the feelings she kept locked inside, while his were put on display for all to see. They were complete opposites, and she loved him more than anything else in the world.
That still scared her, but she knew better than to push him away. Pushing him away had led to more disaster than she anticipated. So she learned from her mistakes, and allowing herself to be open to love and receiving it in return had proven to be a lot...nicer than she’d previously thought.
Slowly, she stepped closer, crouching beside him. “Makoto.” The second her gloved hand touched his shoulder, he gasped, shuddering and deep, blinking glaze out of his eyes to try and focus onto Kyoko’s steady gaze.
It seemed, for a moment, he forgot to breathe; and then he exhaled slowly, managing a shy smile. It was almost as if he had returned back to his normal self right away. “Ah - I’m sorry, um...did I wake you? I tried to be quiet when I got up…”
Two thoughts immediately came to mind; one, even though he was always open, he tried to keep his more serious emotions at bay, which never could slip past her even though he tried each time. And two, he most likely had no idea how long he’d been sitting there and staring into space. She had a feeling that he’d been sitting there long before she came back to consciousness.
“No, you didn’t wake me up,” she replied, slowly removing her hand from his shoulder. She had no idea what to say at first. It wasn’t like she didn’t know what he was doing here; it wouldn’t take the Ultimate Detective to figure it out. Given that it was the middle of the night and he was awake and lost in thought, it could only have been a nightmare.
They stared at each other for a few moments in that silence while she thought about it. Makoto’s shy smile didn’t waver as he slowly outstretched the arm closest to her, allowing her room to sit next to him around the blanket. “Wanna join me?”
Despite herself, and despite the situation, she couldn’t help but close her eyes for a moment, a small smile pulling at the corners of her lips. She opened her eyes and slid in to sit beside him, pulling her side of the blanket over her shoulder. As their shoulders touched, she could feel him relax, and she couldn’t help but look over. He had returned his gaze toward the window, and in the moonlight she noticed the bags under his eyes and the way he blinked just a little slower than usual. So he was exhausted.
“...Do you want to talk about it?” This, of course, was the most logical course of action in this scenario. She kept her steady gaze on him, seeing the surprise line his features as he looked back at her, before being replaced by another small smile. She knew he knew he couldn’t fool her, though he still tried. That was just who he was. But after everything he’d done to help her, she thought it was only fair to, little by little, return the favor.
“Guess I can’t hide it from you, huh. I should know better by now.” So her guess had been proven to be right. There were a few moments of quiet which he was most likely using to gather his thoughts, eyes closed as he breathed in and out. Then he opened them again, letting out a dry laugh. “It’s kind of stupid.”
She shook her head. “Just tell me.”
He paused, then nodded, returning his gaze to the window with a sad smile, pulling his knees just a little closer to his chest. “I guess it was because I was thinking about it the other day, but I dreamed...it felt like we were back at Hope’s Peak.” His voice was soft and brittle. “I saw everyone again, and...all the bodies, the executions. All of it. It’s burned into my brain and I had to watch it all again.” He let out a shaky laugh this time. “You’d think after all this time it wouldn’t get to me as much.”
She couldn’t say she was surprised. Even while her memory had been hazy, seeing bodies hadn’t been a shock to her. But to Makoto, and mostly everyone else in their class, it had been. He had been just a normal boy before entering Hope’s Peak Academy. Thanks to Junko Enoshima, that had all changed.
Sighing, she kept her gaze on him. “Makoto, don’t you remember what you told me?”
“Huh?”
“You told me you would never get over their deaths. That you would ‘always carry them with you.’ It doesn’t matter how much time has passed.” She looked toward the window. “They were your... our friends, and they were driven to do terrible things for everyone else’s own filthy enjoyment.” That first night, when he’d said all that to her, it had been the first time she’d realized he was special. An enigma, and one to be wary of. She could almost laugh; if her past self saw where she was now, cuddled up next to that boy in the middle of the night, she wasn’t sure what she would do.
Leaning his head back against the armrest, Makoto smiled a little to himself. “Yeah, I did say that. I remember you telling me I was strong before I shouted at you.” He glanced back to her, some warmth returning to his eyes. She always loved the way he looked at her, as if she was the only woman in the world. It was stupid to think that way, or at least, she used to think that. Love...it wasn’t as terrible as she’d thought.
Kyoko reached for one of his hands, and he slowly let go of his knees, tucking them underneath himself instead. Their fingers intertwined. “You are strong. I still stand by that.”
Pink splashed across his cheeks; it wasn’t often she outright complimented him, but it wasn’t because she didn’t want to. It was more...she felt strange doing so. Perhaps one day she’d be able to. After all, Makoto had that certain effect on her.
“You know…” he yawned into his free hand, tired gaze shifting from the window to her. “There was one good thing about our time at Hope’s Peak.”
“Is that so?” she asked, raising a brow. “And what may that be?”
He smiled, tilting his head back to look up at the moon. “It brought me to you, of course. If anything, I’m grateful for that.”
Now it was her turn to blush. Damn Makoto, always saying things to throw her off. Even more unfortunate was that she had no response. It wasn’t as easy to fluster him anymore, not since they’d actually begun dating, but that didn’t mean she didn’t like to try. And now here he was, doing it to her. All she could do was scoff lightly, though it held no indignation because a smile gave her away. Dammit. She squeezed his hand instead of saying anything, and that seemed to suffice for him. He’d always been good at reading between the lines when it came to emotion, and now was certainly no exception.
An easy silence engulfed them as they both stared up at the moon. Based on its position in the sky, she could deduce that it was nearing two or three in the morning. There wasn’t much else to be said, so they didn’t. Besides, in a situation like this, she’d learned that just being there was enough. Speaking wasn’t always necessary.
Still, it was getting late. She was grateful she had woken up, even though she was certain he would have been fine on his own. Being someone’s girlfriend meant one had to care, and she certainly cared a whole lot more than she ever meant to. But was it really such a bad thing? She’d always been terrified of losing things; losing people like how she had lost her father. Makoto had taught her a lot of things; trust, hope, faith. He taught her how to no longer be afraid of these things. Most importantly, though, he allowed her to learn how to love again.
As she was beginning to think they should head back to bed, something caught the corner of her eye. Glancing to the side, she noticed his eyes were closed, chin dipping down toward his chest. His hand was limp in hers.
She found herself staring fondly for a few moments. He was so unbelievably stubborn, and though it could be infuriating, it was also endearing. The paradox was just fitting for a mystery like Makoto Naegi.
A part of her knew she ought to nudge him, to drag him back to bed with her so they could get some proper rest. But looking at him now, seeing the bags under his eyes in the shadow of moonlight, she didn’t have the heart to do it. He’d softened her in the way no one else had. Was that what love was? Well, she wasn’t sure if it was the same for everyone, but that was what it was to her, at least.
Love, to Kyoko, was Makoto.
She reached up, gently placing her hand on the opposite side of his head, guiding it to rest on her shoulder. He mumbled something under his breath, nuzzling his head closer, and then lay still. Now that she was alone, she smiled to herself as she pulled the blanket more snugly around him, gently placing a kiss to the top of his head. Leaning her head back against the armrest, her eyes took in the moon one more time.
His breaths, soft and even against her collarbone, were a comfort she never knew she wanted. And as she closed her eyes, her tired brain decided to voice one last thought. “I love you.”
As she drifted, though, she could have sworn she heard a mumbled response that sounded a lot like, “I love you, too.”

Another Danganronpa AU because I have a problem. Also because I've been reading a lot of time loop fics, don't judge me.
Whenever I go off on a tangent, I'll try to mark it with () or []
I've not managed to find one where Shuichi is the time traveler, but there's a fuckload of Kokichi. Yep, I'm actually including drv3 this time. A miracle. Let's take all the side antagonists, Byakuya Togami, Nagito Komaeda, and Kokichi Ouma. These little shits are uncooperative as all hell, but at least Byakuya is emotionally attached to his fellow survivers by the end.
Nagito and Kokichi both died, but for slightly different reasons, despite both trying to make an unsolvable murder.
Now that you know what characters I'm using, allow me to spill my ideas in a way that might not make much sense.
In all of their rooms, once they finish the first loop (canon) they find an extra tablet. That or an extra feature on the monopads. This allows them to chat with each other as they realize that they're all in the same situation.
Kokichi is already kinda attached to his classmates but paranoia and trust issues like to bite him in the ass. Nagito legit dies to try and kill all of them so he takes a while to come around. (Specifically after Byakuya ask Junko about the ultimate despair and why they follow her. "Manipulation and a hell of a lotta brainwashing!" Or something.)
Everytime they die, or finish the game wrong, the go into a blankness. Just an empty void that they stay in until the others also die/finish incorrectly. They all start the time loops at the exact same time, no matter when they finish.
Once Nagito gets aware of the goal (get everyone out alive) he tries it. He's the first to get out. Ultimate Luck and all that, also the fact that he was the one who initiated the murder.
I hear what your saying, "what about the fourth chapter" and to that I respond with what I remember from the game, "it's only real because you think it's real." If Nagito told them and convinced them it was virtual by then, they'd be fine. How'd he know it was virtual? He's already gotten to the end multiple times, just never with everyone.
That's enough about dr2 for now though, I talk about it too much anyway. Byakuya goes through his fair share of "fuck this" and is not ok. He and Kokichi both starve themselves before they realize the goal (they both realized during the same loops thanks to Shuichi and Makoto) meanwhile Nagito is fucking around because hey, what if I fuck with Fuyuhiko so much, he traps me in a tree and cuts off my fingers? Maybe that's the answer.
Look at the self-deprecating dumbass go-
Kokichi is trying his best, but he's really not sure how to pass the fourth or first chapters without someone dying. That's what most of his loops are, him dying while trying protect someone so he can get this shit over with.
Let's just say, Tsumugi often hits the gremlin child and the avocado. Once he figures out how to get past that (who knew bringing another person into the library would be so useful?) he's so fucking relieved because he can stop Kirumi a lot easier.
(Once they get past a motive with no death and then sleep, their progress "saves" so they don't have to keep doing it, and wake up in bed)
Byakuya is having a bad time, because there's Toko, but then Oogami, and oh fuck he forgot about Mukuro. Damn. Don't forget that Monokuma isn't above bending the rules! He'll gleefully execute the wrong person if their annoying enough.
The amount of times Byakuya got framed for murder and executed is so much higher than the other two, but it still happened occasionally. It happened to Nagito the least tho.
(At one point Kokichi fucks up and everyone thinks he's a girl, Nagito has to tap dance to distract everyone from murdering, and Byakuya is forced into gymnastics. Byakuya cussed one time in all of this, and it was when he first saw Makoto's dead body and Kyoko being framed. When he confessed this to the chat, Kokichi started spamming swears, which nearly gave Nagito a heart attack when he got online about halfway through.)
In this au, drv3's canon ending is bullshit because fuck that noise. As well as a little rewriting of dr3's future version. Byakuya is now an expert at doing stupid shit but no one dieing, so he does exactly that. He somehow wiggles into the meeting and (thanks to his painfully acquired chemical resistance) doesn't pass out.
He pretends to tho and basically breaks all of dr3 future version's canon. No one dies and Monica gets sent to Jabberwock Island where she freaks the fuck out at Nagito acting differently. Byakuya sighs as his time traveling friend tries to calm down a screaming child.
Of course, I went off on a tangent so here's drv3! They all get out, Tsumugi doesn't die (Kokichi learned his lesson about that already) and they get out, dragging a tied up Tsumugi with them.
Junko isn't dead either btw. Makoto is trying to reform her and kinda failing, but at least she isn't trying to kill him constantly.
[Her plans were always foiled by Byakuya cuz apparently he's still in the time loop. Every time someone (important) dies and he sees the body he wakes up that morning or yesterday with enough time to stop it. He's not sure why. The same thing starts happening to Nagito when he gets out, but they always loop together. Dr3 was a nightmare for Nagito, because he didn't know what was happening to Byakuya]
Kokichi steps out and finds that, instead of it all fading to black like normal, it fades to white. He smiles as it fades because that means he did a good job, even if he hasn't been able to talk to Nagito for seven loops or Byakuya for two.
Then he wakes up and finds them both standing over his hospital bed. (they sent pictures of themselves in the group chat) and it turns out that Junko had kidnapped them when they were children and forced them into multiple killing games, that they'll never remember, but the fake talents they have now are practically real talents, so they're artificial just like Hajime's.
Then, because drv3 is a literal teen and not an adult with only their teenage memories like dr2, the whole cast gets practically adopted by the adults. Their parents are all dead.
(all the backstories are kind of similar to reality. Kokichi was in an orphanage with a small group of friends that liked to play pranks. Shuichi's parents were abusive so his uncle took him in. His uncle in dead now soo-
Hurt/comfort saiouma and you can't stop me. Mutual healing is what gives me life. Also neagirigami. And komahina. Let the antagonists be gay/bi for the protagonists/heroine.)
Kokichi's game ended only a few months after Nagito's.
Let me know if this is kind of hard to understand because of how much I jumped around, and I'll try to explain whatever confused you!

That anon is an asshole. Why do you hate Shuichi? I think he fits the theme of truth and lies, but his character development is a complete joke as he has zero struggles after his waifu dead. He never once second guess his actions in class trials and doesn’t even think of major consequences (killing the de facto prime minister and not noticing a serial killer is amoung them). His stans over analyze his actions and try to justify everything he does.
They were quite a jerkhole. I can imagine that most stans would be protective of their favorite characters if anyone were to express disapproval.
And thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my personal feelings on the matter anon. And those are some interesting reasons to dislike him but I have some other reasons.
My answers will be hidden under the “Read More” because they’re long answers. But these are my thoughts and reasons for why I hate Shuichi Saihara.
Reason 1: The Protagonist Switch was Lackluster
Right off the bat, I personally dislike that we were promised a unique and compelling protagonist like Kaede only to switch her with a generic insecure protagonist like Saihara. The use of the protag switch isn’t a bad plot twist and it can be clever, it’s just that the result of switching Kaede for someone like Saihara left a bad taste in my mouth.
I loved Kaede because she was unique as a DR protagonist. Along with having a colorful design and talent, she was assertive, confident and willing to take charge. She was actively involved in the story by stepping up as the group’s de facto leader and trying to motivate them. She was also flawed in the sense that she was quick to butt heads with others and she didn’t completely trust others or practice her own beliefs of trusting in friends. And personally, I’m not even upset that she tried to kill someone. It’s still considered something different for a DR protagonist to do, especially if it was for the greater good.
But when we get Saihara, he continues the trend of being a generic sad boy who feels insecure about his talents and wants to be stronger. Most of his screentime is spent moping about his problems and how he doesn’t feel good enough. He doesn’t have the same presence as Kaede and just stays in the background while the rest of the cast move the story as much as they can.
In all honesty, if they had introduced Saihara as the new protagonist, or at least make it so that his predecessor wasn’t as compelling as Kaede, then I wouldn’t have been too upset. At the very least I wouldn’t have gotten my hopes up for a protagonist who was actually different compared to the past protags.
Reason 2: Waifus In Refrigerators
For those that don’t know, fridging is the concept of (brutally) killing off a fictional female character in order to create an emotional impact for her male love interest and his character development.
Kaede’s death and how it impacted Saihara is textbook fridging.
I strongly detest fridging since it robs a female character of her agency and role in the story. It treats her as a tool meant to motivate her male love interest to either avenge her death or grow as a person. Kaede’s death along with her final wish is what pushes Saihara to try and beat the killing game. And from then on, Saihara will take the moment to reflect on Kaede’s tragic end and how he inspired him with her kindness. Kaede loses her identity as a complex leader who was willing to commit murder for a greater good. Everyone just remembers her as Saihara’s innocent dead love interest who inspired him to keep on fighting. It’s also worse in the 6th case when it’s revealed that Tsumugi took advantage of Kaede’s trap to kill Amami which further pushes Kaede into the image of an innocent angel that did no wrong.
And it’s also frustrating since this isn’t the only time that the Danganronpa series has killed off its female characters in order to develop their male love interests.
In SDR2, Peko dies trying to save Fuyuhiko which in turn motivates him to stop acting like a jerkhole and be more cooperative with the group.
In DR3 Future Side, Chisa is the first victim of the killing game which pushes her boyfriend Munakata to become a more direct antagonist towards Naegi for protecting the Remnants.
In the same series, Kyoko allows herself to be poisoned in order to protect Naegi. It’s through her death that Naegi decides to confront Munakata in a final showdown. And while Kyoko does get brought back to life at the end of the show, it should be noted that she was only brought back just to be part of Naegi’s happy ending package. She loses her agency and is brought back just to be his newly revived girlfriend.
In DR3 Despair Side, Chiaki is brutally killed in order for her classmates to become Remnants of Despair. But it’s her final heartwrenching moments with Izuru that inspire emotion inside of him aswell as deciding to turn against Junko.
So Kaede being killed for Saihara’s development is the fifth fridging example in this series and it sucks that Kodaka and his crew rely on this trope throughout Danganronpa.
Reason 3: The Narrative Forces You To Like Him
Another issue that I found irritating about Saihara is how everyone began praising him.
Just after the first case, everyone constantly praises and coddles Saihara for being such a great detective and for growing so much. For me, that praise feels undeserving since he barely did anything to earn it. Thinking back to each of the past protagonists, they didn’t have everyone’s respect in the beginning. They each had to work had and face adversity throughout their stories in order to earn their praise and respect. Even Kaede, who despite being a confident leader, had to deal with people frequently judging her leadership and actions. So I find it questionable that Saihara already earned everyone’s respect after solving only one case.
By having all the characters praise Saihara, the narrative pushes you to accept him as the new protagonist and recognize how awesome it is to have him. But for me, it just makes me dislike him even more. I refuse to like something just because everyone else does and it won’t take away my admiration/love for Kaede.
It’s also jarring since anytime a character has the spotlight, it somehow has to involve Saihara.
“Wow Himiko! You’re much more expressive now than before. Just like you Saihara!”
“Man, it sounds like you had a harsh life growing up Harumaki. Just like you and your detective work, eh Shuichi?”
The narrative can’t help but force Saihara to be around and praised by the people around him despite the spotlight not being on him in that given moment.
Reason 4: He’s Not a Good Detective
While Saihara’s role as a detective may fit the theme of Truth and Lies, that doesn’t mean he was good at the job. My issue being that he was unproductive and biased for the role.
While he did set up that trap in Chapter 1 to catch the mastermind, he doesn’t do anything as proactive in the later chapters. He spent most if not all of his time going to training with Kaito and moping about his problems. It goes on like this for 4 chapters and it takes Kiibo threatening to blow up the school before he actually gets to work on solving the mystery of the killing game. As a detective, you’d think he would put more effort into actually solving the mysteries of the killing game or try to put some thought on who the mastermind could be.
The biased part comes with how he interacts with others and how he’s more critical of people based on how they treat him. Saihar has a tendency to be very judgmental towards the students and doesn’t look at the entire picture.
He writes off Ouma as the embodiment of lies and doesn’t bother trying to learn more about him or his true motivations.
And on the opposite side, he openly praises his friends while blatantly ignoring the problematic things they’d done throughout the story.
He considers Kaede to be an inspirational role model despite how she betrayed him and wanted to commit murder behind his back.
He worships Kaito and treats him as a perfect hero despite never noticing his ongoing illness or the fact that Kaito didn’t trust his friends enough to reveal his own insecurities.
He deems Maki a reliable friend despite the fact that she went behind his and everyone’s back in order to kill Ouma and was willing to gamble everyone else’s lives if it meant taking revenge on the supreme leader.
Shouldn’t a detective be more persistent when presented with a mystery while also acknowledging all the sides (both good and bad) of a given person? If his personal bias was treated as a flaw by the narrative, then that would actually give his character significant depth. Especially if he worked on managing his biases and learning to acknowledge all the sides. But it isn’t treated as a bad problem.
For me, the fact that he’s supposed to be a detective who “grows stronger” and is so good at his job despite all of this really rubs me the wrong way. If anything, it shows me that he’s really bad at the job.
Also, I would like to bring up that I don’t count him investigating the murder cases as being a good detective. Why? Because Hajime and his class in SDR2 were able to solve their class trials without a detective figure. Being a detective, or having one, doesn’t make solving the class trials any easier.
Reason 5: An Unnecessary Cliche
Personally, I really see no reason for why Saihara’s character needed to be the generic insecure protagonist for this particular installment of Danganronpa. It’s the same cliche storyline featured in a grand majority of anime and light novels. It’s repetitive and irritating knowing that so many stories focus primarily on a sad generic boy who doesn’t feel good enough and wants to be stronger.
It’s also worth mentioning that in comparison, the past protagonists at least had narrative reasons for why they were generic and insecure in the first place.
For Naegi, he was the first protagonist of the installment and his normalcy was meant to contrast the extremely talented and radically different students he’d be involved with. As the game progresses, he uses his normalness to bond with the students and rally them together in the name of hope.
For Hajime, he’s treated as a deconstruction of the generic insecure protagonist. It’s because his feelings of inferiority and longing to be special that he decides to accept Hope’s Peak’s experimentation and become Izuru Kamakura: an incredibly talented super-being who lost his humanity.
For Komaru, she was regarded as an ordinary girl that had the potential to lead others which is recognized by the adult resistance and Monaca. So throughout the game, both sides were pushing her into becoming either the next symbol of Hope like Naegi or next symbol of despair like Junko. But she ultimately decides to be neither of them and wants to be her own person.
There were reasons for why each of these protagonists were considered generic and insecure as it contributed to the narratives. But for Saihara, there’s really no solid reason for why he’s the only normal one of the V3 cast. And everyone is more than happy to praise him as the best one out of the cast despite doing so little to earn it. At most, Tsumugi reveals that Saihara being an insecure boy who grew stronger thanks to his friends was for the sake of a fictional storyline. Obviously it was meant to mentally break him but it honestly feels like a weak reason to keep the trend of a generic insecure sad boy. Not to mention there are other reasons for why I believe this doesn’t work.
The setup for the “Danganronpa is a fictional TV show” twist didn’t have enough buildup so it doesn’t make the cliche that strong.
Saihara still continues the role of the insecure boy who grows strong and saves the day. While Tsumugi states that his role was written for him, Saihara still continues the tropes of his archetype by saving the day. It’s ultimately because of him that he’s able to convince his friends and the viewing audience to give up on Danganronpa. It was the writer’s way of having their cake and eating it.
If the reveal was meant to be a shot at how it’s become a cliche, then why not live up to it? If they wanted to show how Danganronpa was running for too long or how it’s cliches were getting old, then why not commit to those ideas? Instead of having everyone praise and worship Saihara, make them question if they’re really going to depend on a generic guy to save them. Instead  of being just a cute quirk, actually show the negative sides of Saihara’s anxiety and depression and how they would hinder him from participating in trial discussions. Maybe even have Kaito lose his temper at Saihara because of how much he mopes around.
There’s so many ways they could have gone with deconstructing Saihara’s stereotype or showcasing how it’s become old and stale. So it feels disappointing that they never went that far.
And another reason for why I dislike his characterization is because it brings to mind Ryota Mitarai from the DR3 anime. Just like Saihara, Mitarai is a main character who’s described as generic, insecure and spends most of his time whining about how useless he is. Despite this, he manages to survive the killing game since the other more unique characters are killed or move the events of the story. I personally found Mitarai to be a frustrating character. I detest characters who constantly whine about how useless or miserable they are as a means of getting sympathy from the audience. So having to deal with Saihara who more or less shares multiple characteristics with Mitarai felt very exhausting.
Conclusion
So those would be my reasons for why I hate/strongly dislike Saihara. I can admit that alot of these reasons weren’t so much because of Saihara or his actions but how he was written throughout the story. He still did alot of things I didn’t like don’t get me wrong, but alot of fault can be traced to the writers and how they decided to write him and Kaede’s characters. I still find his archetype as a generic insecure boy who mopes around to be an unappealing archetype but I’m sure most of his fans would suggest otherwise.
If you’ve managed to read everything here, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to do so. I can’t imagine many people would want to read a critical post targeted towards one of the most beloved characters in Danganronpa. So thank you for doing so.
And as always, if you agree or disagree with anything I’ve written, you’re more than welcome to reblog this with your comments. I’m always up for friendly discussions.

What kind of super powers would the DR1 and UDG cast have?
Firstly, I cut it since it’s so long but it’s all there!Secondly, I only included Komaru and the Warriors of Hope in UDG.This took so long, and there’s a lot more in here than the other versions so they’re a little shorter. I hope you like it!
The Superpowers The DR1 and Ultra Despair Girls Casts Would Have!
SDR2 Version | V3 Version
Makoto Naegi
Superpower(s): Hope Inducement, Fate ImmunityHope Inducement: The ability to induce Hope into others.Fate Immunity: The power to be immune to the course of fate.
Makoto’s powers counter that of Junko Enoshima’s.
He can induce Hope into others through means of mind control and other psychicabilities. With that said, he’s also immune to normal mind control.
He radiates Hope and induces anyone who comes into contact with him orsurrounds him with it, using that driving willpower to fight against crime andevil. Just being in the same room as him will cause you to feel his powers.
He naturally induces Hope, simply being around him will affect you and he won’t even have to do anything; Makoto can also purposefully induce Hope into a target as well if needed.
Targets with stronger willpower will take more effort and energy to induce.
Fate Immunity also comes in handy since he is able to change the course of hisown fate and others, using it as a method to protect himself and loved ones.
Makoto has used this power to cheat death multiple times and any time thingslook bad for him, he can simply alter reality and his own destiny. He doesn’thave entire control over what happens but can use it to avoid certainsituations.
Mind readers can predict his moves but cannot change them for his willpower is too strong, he isn’t easily induced or controlled.
He has also used Fate Immunity to save his comrades lives as well.
Kyoko Kirigiri
Superpower(s): Pattern Sense, Truth Detection Pattern Sense: The ability to perceive, analyze, and comprehend patterns.Truth Detection: The power to detect truths in any situation.
Kyoko’s powers are a gift and perhaps that explains why sheis such a phenomenal Detective.
Other than Enhanced Investigation which gives her an edge, she has PatternSense which improves her analytical and perceptive skills.
She’s able to analyze crime scenes, including the chemical components ofevidence just by examining them, sense a suspect’s true nature and intentions, locate evidence more easily, calculate probabilities in the future and decipherthe world.
Her powers are linked to her brain and eyes, and it is a superhuman feat thatimproves her crime-solving capabilities. Kyoko is able to notice even thesmallest of details and often solves crimes within minutes and long beforeanyone else could.
Overall, her Detective powers go beyond that of a normal human.
It can be triggered randomly, which is linked to her strong gut feelings.
She also uses Truth Detection and can constantly sense credibility and falseinformation in any given situation; even if she hardly hears what was said andis an earshot away, she can immediately decipher whether or not said person islying, regardless of if they are a stranger or not. She can sense lies and can never successfully be deceived, even by those with Deception and Lying Superpowers.
It won’t work against brain-washed targets, but it does help Kyoko tell whenshe is in the presence of a shapeshifter or mind controller, etc.
Byakuya Togami
Superpower(s): Currency Generation, Monetary Empowerment Currency Generation: The ability to create currency out of thin air.Monetary Empowerment: The power to gain strength from money/currency.
The Togami family has a secret to how they’ve remained sowealthy, and that’s through the use of these powers that are passed down fromgeneration to generation.
With Currency Generation, Byakuya can create mounds of money on a whim ortransform objects into money through touch.
In essence, anything he touches turns to gold… literally. Although, he cannot turn living beings into currency.
And with Monetary Empowerment, he becomes faster, stronger, and more durablethrough wealth: the amount of wealth he possesses at any given time willdetermine these things. His strength, intelligence, and so on reflect in his wealth.
With that said, if he loses a lot of money then Byakuya and his powers canbecome weakened. He can lose strength, stamina, intelligence, reflexes and so on.
He remains so strong through Currency Generation; every time his powers start to decline or dwindlehe simply generates more money out of thin air and regains his strength.
Byakuya doesn’t have time to fight crime, much more interested in the personalgain and wealth he gets through use of his powers.
He never has to worry about becoming poor as well.
Celestia Ludenberg
Superpower(s): Trickster, Tactical Genius Trickster: The ability to play tricks and disobey the conventional rules ofbehavior.Tactical Genius: The power to have infallible tactics and strategy.
Celestia obtained her powers naturally and they have helpedher become a master gambler.
She has no use for crime fighting, using them for her own recreational purposesinstead. She falls between villain and hero, leaning more towards using her powers for benefit and mischief.
Through Trickster, she mocks authority and follows her own rules. Celestia iscunning and can use it in a variety of ways: fooling people into falling forher lies and deception, disguising herself to gain an advantage over others, orsimply tricking others into doing her bidding.
She doesn’t bother with immature tricks, instead using her power to play people into her hands, especially in Casinos.
Her charm and seduction has also helped her gain an advantage in this realm.
With Tactical Genius, she can see through all and read people like books;perception, patterns, and information cannot slip past her – this is why she’ssuch a successful gambler.
Celestia can see through the card dealer and determine their moves as well as emitting an aura that deceives them into doing as she pleases. rigging games to her favor.
She is able to always be two steps ahead of everyone around her, predictingtheir strategy before even they know what their next move is.
Leon Kuwata
Superpower(s): Speed Throwing, Intuitive AptitudeSpeed Throwing: The ability to throw objects at extremely high speeds.Intuitive Aptitude: The power to instantly learn and understand the complexityand exactness of organisms, objects, etc. without the need of long-term ofspecial education.
Leon gained his abilities naturally. Intuitive Aptitude camefirst, which is something that runs in his blood-line; it’s why he was able topick up baseball so easily without having to go to practice.
He’s able to easily learn the mechanics of something, regardless of how simpleor complex. He tells people it’s just because he has a good gut and learns quickly.
It goes so much deeper than that, though. Leon has senses that a normal humandoesn’t have and is the main reason why he excels at just about everything hedoes.
And he can easily adapt to changes and whatever an enemy throws at him.
Speed Throwing was an ability he obtained through sports, particularlybaseball; it helped him with pitching.
Depending on how large and heavy the object is that he’s throwing willdetermine its damage, and if he needs to he can impale enemies with pointedobjects.
A trail of fire is often seen following the objects he throws – if he can liftit, he can throw it.
Typically, Leon stays out of crime-fighting because it’s not his scene. However, he steps in when necessary. He doesn’t like fighting solo and refuses to call himself a hero, though.
Aoi Asahina
Superpower(s): Hydromancer, Whirlpool GenerationHydromancer: The power to manipulate and bend water.Whirlpool Generation: The ability to create whirlpools on a whim.
Aoi discovered the talent hidden within her whilst swimmingone day; ever since, her superpowers have caused her to be an even greaterswimmer than she was before.
More than that, she can create water at the tip of her fingers or manipulate and bend alreadyexisting bodies of water. Aoi is able to use them as attacks if she pleases, changing their consistency from liquid to strong and solid, hitting the targetwith a ton of force.
She can also turn a stream of water into burning, scalding steam as an attack.
It’s very similar to Water-Bending in Avatar, moving them with her mind and hands. And the larger the body of water, the more powerful her attacks become.
She can also generate whirlpools inside of water or even out of thin air, almostlike a black-hole that sucks and traps enemies. It’s very violent and trains her energy, though. Once an enemy falls into a whirlpool, they won’t be able to escape and are at her mercy.
And she does use her powers for recreational use as well, improving herswimming, but she prefers using them for crime-fighting. She has enhanced herabilities so much that she can also freeze water if she pleases and control iceas well. She is working on freeze-breath, but for now she can just turn an already existing body of water into solid ice with just one touch.
Aoi is so talented that she’s mastered the art of Water-Healing as well, able to heal mortal wounds using her powers.
Kiyotaka Ishimaru
Superpower(s): Moral ManipulationMoral Manipulation: The ability to manipulate the boundaries between right andwrong.
Kiyotaka is incredibly torn between his superpowers: he is agenerally good person and the fact that he is able to essentially alter realityreally hurts him emotionally.
With his powers, he is able to manipulate and shift the basic concept ofmorality. He can change what is viewed as good and right into wrongdoing andwhat is seen as evil or totally immoral into the right thing.
If he wanted to, he can make genocide seem perfect but healing someone in needcould cause anger and hatred.
It’s incredibly powerful and he understands the risks so he uses his powers sparingly and solely for good purposes.
Kiyotaka’s strong sense of justice sometimes gets in the way and he’ll bend the morals to seek justice, like a vigilante with superpowers.
If he knows someone is committing acts of moral wrongdoing but others refuse to see it, he can manipulate it and force them to see everything wrong in the world.
Although, he is hyper-sensitive to the evils that come with reality as well because of this, which drains his energy.
He can’t cause physical damage or attacks, only change others’ mentality.
His affects can be long-lasting and he can change the way we view certain things forever to adhere to his liking or only temporarily change the morals of a scenario.
But he’ll never change others’ opinions of himself to benefit his own moral standing because that isn’t right. He never alters things to make himself seem like a better person, even though he technically could. He feels like people don’t easily trust him since he could change their viewpoints with the snap of a finger.
Touko Fukawa
Superpower(s): Hidden Arsenal, Dagger Proficiency Hidden Arsenal: The ability to hide a large amount of weaponry within an item, clothing, or object.Dagger Proficiency: The power to possess great skill in wielding daggers andknives.
When she’s Touko, she really isn’t very extraordinary – atypical teenaged girl. When she shifts into Genocider, though, is wheneverything changes.
She used to be more like a super-villain but her intents have shifted. Toukoisn’t fond of her powers and she fears that people will think she’s a freak ifthey know, or worse – she’ll scare them away.
She has since learned how to use her powers as Touko and doesn’t limit herself to only using them when she is Genocider, but she often finds no use for them in her normal persona.
With Hidden Arsenal, she’s able to hide numerous weapons inside of her clothing– even those that are larger than the dimensions of her body. In itself, shecan turn herself into the weapon if she wanted to.
It’s also called Body Storage, and Touko’s carrying at least thirty weapons onher at all times – but you’d never be able to tell.
It’s normally for self-protection or protection of others.
Dagger Proficiency goes beyond simply being skilled with a blade – she has avaried fighting style and is a much more hands-on hero than most. A lot ofpeople don’t even view her powers as real powers.
Because of her powers, she is much more cunning and stealthy than your averagehuman.
Knowing that Genocider can be a little hard to control and unpredictable, Touko has begun fighting as herself and using her powers on her own terms but still somewhat fears usage of blades.
Mondo Oowada
Superpower(s): Hellfire, Vehicular CombatHellfire: The ability to control the fire from the depths of Hell.Vehicular Combat: The ability to be highly proficient with vehicles solelymeant for combat purposes.
Despite his attitude, Mondo uses his powers mainly for good. Hes a cocky superhero, though, and tends to get ahead of himself.
Hellfire and his powers in general are similar to that of Ghost Rider; sure, he cancreate flames from his hands and shoot fireballs from his palms, but what’s cooler than thatis surrounding his bike with flames and riding through the city on a flame-bike.
When he rides it, it leaves a trail of fire behind him – however, Mondo is immune togetting burned.
His flames destroy anything they touch, and the color varies – mainly eithernormal flame colors or green.
Hellfire is summoned from the depths of Hellitself and is hotter than normal fire.
Almost everyone, or at least the higher-up members, in the Crazy Diamondspossess this ability.
If he has to, he will use fire from his hands to fight. He loves scorching enemies with the hellish flames from his exhaust, though.
And Mondo can fight using his bike, with both the flames he creates that surround itand the armory stored within his bike. He is essentially able to use his bikeas a weapon in itself.
He has altered it to become a weapon and endure his Hellfire ability. He thinks of himself as a real-life Ghost Rider.
Sayaka Maizono
Superpower(s): Siren Song, Death SongSiren Song: The power to emit a sound that lures anyone who hears it towardsthe user.Death Song: The power to cause death by emitting sound.
Sayaka had always been a beautiful singer but a tragic accidentenhanced her abilities, thus giving her these powers.
She is prideful when it comes to her singing voice and is able to switch hernormal one on and off, so that she can sing normally if she wanted to withoutusing her powers.
Normal Sirens can only attract the opposite sex with their songs but Sayakahas obtained the ability to attract both sexes.
Anyone who hears her Siren songs will immediately become infatuated with herand unable to resist her; even if they wanted to run away from her, they wouldbe physically unable to.
Once you hear it, you are completely under her spell. A form of hypnosis; it is mesmerizing, those who hear it will fall under her bidding.
Sayaka can also use Death Song, so that anyone who hears it will die – she cantarget one person with it or several people in her vicinity, depending on the situation.
It causes a frequency so high that it destroys the brain of whoever hears it,of course Sayaka is immune to its effects.
She does use her powers for good, mainly taking out evil-doing men with them.
She’ll lure in her enemies with her Siren song, and once they are unable to get away, she’ll use Death Song to end their life.
Chihiro Fujisaki
Superpower(s): Digital Teleportation and Bionic PhysiologyDigital Teleportation: The power to teleport via digital data.Bionic Physiology: The power to use the abilities of a robot, machine, orweapon.
Chihiro gained these powers in a freak accident, involvingthe technology he’d been programming.
Now, he is able to literally become one with his technology.
All he has to do is run his hands along the technology he wants to teleportwith and activate his powers, and he will be able to use their programming andwires to teleport.
For example, if in a computer lab, Chihiro could teleport into one computer andthen move to the opposite side of the room, teleporting out of another. It’s the same as other forms of teleportation, only limited to digital methods.
It’s not limited to just computers though, he can also teleport through phones, machines; anything involving technology.
Bionic Physiology allows Chihiro to transform either his entire body or hislimbs into machines – although, it’s limited to the things he’s come intocontact with previously.
He can turn his arm into a weapon, for example. Although, he can short-circuitif he uses too much power at once; he also isn’t very comfortable with using weapons, not wanting to hurt anyone.
Once he teleports into something, he can use Bionic Physiology to control it as well.
Sakura Oogami
Superpower(s): Strength Absorption, Sense of StrengthStrength Absorption: The ability to steal/absorb the strength of others and addit to one’s own level of strength.Sense of Strength: The ability to know a target’s powers, skills and strengths.
Sakura is going to be a local hero, a face that everyoneknows and relies on and an ultimate crime-fighter.
She is humble, down-to-earth, and doesn’t always talk about her powers buteveryone knows what she is capable of. She insists that it’s nothing special.
With Sense of Strength, she can scan an enemy and immediately tell what powersthey possess and what their strengths and weaknesses are, as well as weak points. Sakura is then ableto use that against them - literally.
Combining that with Strength Absorption, she can alter their own abilities and manifestthem into herself, weakening them and making herself stronger so that there’s nowunbalanced skill levels.
She steals others’ physical power and drain away the enemy, adding it to her own strength and causing her to become more powerful. Since she is soskilled in combat, she is able to use her powers to defeat nearly any enemy shecomes across.
There is a limit to how much strength Sakura can take from others but that is alimit she has never reached.
She is incredibly moral and would never use her powers against innocentcitizens. And no matter what, Sakura is always going to rush head-first into a fight, never fearing her enemy.
Yasuhiro Hagakure
Superpower(s): DivinationDivination: The ability to gain insight into a question or situation using anoccultic, standardized process or ritual.
Yasuhiro always had these superpowers, born with them, butit took him a very long time to gain any sort of credibility. Everyone alwaysdismissed him or didn’t believe him when he said he had powers.
Since he’s been dismissed so many times, he typically stays out of the crime-fighting scene, feeling like a reject.
When he was younger, he was a lot less accurate; as he’s gained experience andage, he is able to precisely predict the past, present, and future as well asother methods of divination.
Yasuhiro is able to communicate with the supernatural and read patterns. He hasa ‘third-eye’ which he uses to see into the future or accurately predict thepast, causing him to read people like a book.
He’s also evolved into using Crystallomancy, particularly his Crystal Ball butGems as well, which he can use to see into the future, too.
Yasuhiro has also developed the ability of Precognition, a form of Divination;with this, he is able to perceive future events before they happen. He usesthis to prevent tragedies from happening and warn others of events to come and to predict the villains’ nextmoves.
He’s also capable of performing more ‘mundane’ acts; palm and aura reading, future-telling, and so on like a ‘normal’ psychic.
And he has Mediumship, able to communicate with the dead as well.
Junko Enoshima
Superpower(s): Despair Inducement, Mind ControlDespair Inducement: The power to induce a great sense of Despair into others.Mind Control: Control the minds of others.
Let’s be honest, Junko is going to be more of a Super-villainthan a Hero.
She was born with these powers which may be why she is titled the UltimateDespair. With her powers, Junko is able to cause feelings of Despair anddepression into others.
Unlike Makoto, she has to physically come in contact with someone to induce Despair.
The feelings she creates and implements into others makes them feel as if thereis no reason to live, encouraging hopelessness. The feelings she can create are so powerful that it can drive others to takingtheir lives.
Junko first tested out her abilities on her sister, Mukuro. Since then, the pair have worked together.
With Mind Control, she can cause total Despair – if someone chooses not tosubmit to her or somehow resists the inducement, all she has to do is controlthem into doing as she pleases.
Her victims have no recollection of what they said or did whilst beingcontrolled. This is how she gets people to do her dirty work.
Junko has also used Mind Control to force others into spreading her powers like a disease.
The Despair can last for however long she pleases, and she can cause it to become intensified at will or choose to release the individual from her Despair.
Hifumi Yamada
Superpower(s): X-Ray VisionX-Ray Vision: The power to see through objects or people.
If we’re being honest, he mainly uses it for his ownbenefit. I mean… getting to look through clothing, that’s a score.
Hifumi is even able to look through fictional objects… yes, including anime andmanga characters. It’s both a blessing and a curse but he’s not going to complain.
He has learned how to transform this into light-energy and cause laser-vision as wellbut has yet to gain control of that.
He can see within objects, through walls, and so on. It can also be used formedical purposes to see cancer, tumors, and so on. He will proclaim himself as a Hero but doesn’t really do anything to benefit others.
It can be triggered randomly so sometimes Hifumi will accidentally use it,causing a lot of embarrassing moments and seeing things he didn’t want to.
His eyes are special and look different than a normal human’s and he hides his powers through his glasses. Although, ithas improved his eyesight as well so he really doesn’t even need them anymore.
It does emit radioactive waves when using his powers which can cause harm/health concerns to himself and others if not used properly, so helimits his usage. Because of this, Hifumi doesn’t really fight crime.
Mukuro Ikusaba
Superpower(s): Four Horsemen Physiology Four Horsemen Physiology: The power to use characteristics of the Four Horsemenof the Apocalypse
This is a power Mukuro obtained during her time in the war;it was caused during a freak accident.
With it, she can control and create devastating apocalyptic powers. This is obviously used in her efforts to spread Despair throughout the world.
Mukuro can control Famine, Pestilence, Conquest, and War - if she isn’t careful, she can actually end the world as we know it.
She can bring Famine to anyone she pleases, draining their body of nutrients at an insanely rapid pace. She spreads Pestilence through touch, and her diseases cannot be cured. And Mukuro can control entire armies to do her bidding through War.
Junko loves that since causing the world to cease to exist is just so Despair-inducing!
Often times, she uses her powers under Junko’s command, whether it be intentionallyfollowing orders or if she’s put under Junko’s mind control.
But she restrains herself, not entirely wanting to end the world. Her abilities are arguably more powerful than her sister’s, and once combined, the villains are nearly unstoppable.
Nagisa Shingetsu
Superpower(s): Enhanced Wits and Intelligence Enhanced Wits and Intelligence: The power to have wits/intelligence far beyond that ofnormal members of one’s species.
His powers were given to him by his family. It actuallyscares Nagisa a bit because he fears knowing too much or intimidating others.
Sometimes he’ll downplay his intelligence in order to deceive his enemies in combat. Because of this, it’s hard to predict what he’s going to do.
Although, he isn’t very strong so he resorts to mentally defeating his opponents.
Nagisa is quick on his feet, clever, and able to adapt to changing surroundings. His intelligence surpasses a normal human’s and he can perform complex mentaloperations beyond the normal mind.
It takes little effort and once he sees or hears something for the first time, that information sticks with him for the rest of his life.
Nagisa has exceptional problem-solving skills and deduction, ultimately usinghis powers mainly for good purposes.
He is wise beyond his years and his super-human intelligence is something that no one, other than Nagisa himself, can fully comprehend.
Kotoko Utsugi
Superpower(s): Genre Embodiment, Self-Adaption Genre Embodiment: The power to become the embodiment of specific genres.Self-Adaption: The power to adapt to any situation and select the way oneadapts.
Kotoko has used her powers to gain leverage in life andprogress her acting abilities.
Genre Adaption allows her to master any form ofacting and genre whatsoever, causing her to become a great actress. Although, drama is still her favorite.
Because of this, she’s also able to easily fool others with her genre-capabilities, bringing them into real-world scenarios rather than just on-stage plays. Kotoko is extremely deceptive and cunning.
This is used for her own benefit while she uses Self-Adaption to help others.
Kotoko is already a skilled fighter and she is able to adapt to any surroundingswith this ability. Virtually anything she may face can be altered to benefither.
She can adapt her body to become stronger or withstand certain elements, andshe’s gained many resources enabling her to survive.
She is a hands-on combat Hero and uses this to handle anything that her enemiesmay throw at her.
Kotoko can adapt to anything and thus, making her extremely hard to kill.
Monaca Towa
Superpower(s): PersuasionPersuasion: The ability to control people with the power of one’s own voice.
Unlike Junko Enoshima who uses Mind Control, Monaca usesPersuasion to command and control others with her voice.
She, too, will be more likely to become a Villain instead. She uses herpersuasion to get people to do as she pleases, bowing down to her and gaining asuperiority complex because of it.
Monaca often thinks she’s better than her ‘servants’ as she calls them.
Her targets are unable to disobey, no command is too much to handle when underher spell, as long as the target under her Persuasion is capable of carrying out said command. She often uses this to bring people into Despair as well, siding with Junko.
She is still young so she has yet to master everything involving her powers, but once she reaches a high-level she can eventually persuade people into harmingor killing themselves or others.
There are limitations, she cannot persuade someone into doing something theyare not capable of: for example, if she were to persuade someone who does notknow how to swim to go into the ocean, her powers would falter and fail.
It’s a lesser form of hypnosis strictly using her own voice. She finds amusement out of commanding others to do her bidding, somewhat still childlike and abusing her powers as well.
Masaru Daimon
Superpower(s): Super-Human Speed and StaminaSuper-Human Speed and Stamina: The ability to be supernaturally faster and moredurable than the average human.
He’s always had these superpowers and he loves them, usingthem to gain a lead in athletics. Since Masaru is still a kid, he typicallyabuses his powers and doesn’t always use them for good purposes, finding ways to use them for mischief.
He more-so wants to have fun with them than anything else.
He is glaringly faster than any other human, able to run at nearly the speed oflight.
He’s used this to pull pranks on people before, obviously.
If he accelerates too quickly, he can become severely damaged in the process. Ashe gets older and more experienced, he will become more immune to accelerationbut that’s a skill he has to learn.
And with Super-Human Stamina, Masaru is more durable than your average humanand he doesn’t get tired. He can push himself past his limits and not feel anykind of repercussions.
When he goes too fast, he can’t hear anything other than the wind passing himby. Luckily, Masaru can run for hours and fight for longer than his othersuperhero companions due to his enhanced stamina.
Komaru Naegi
Superpower(s): TelekinesisTelekinesis: The ability to manipulate objects and matter with her mind.
Komaru thought she was an average high-school girl, notrealizing what powers hid within her for a long time. Apparently, she’s alwayspossessed them and didn’t know.
She can influence objects with her mind, controlling them towards her or direct them at enemies. She can use objects as weapons, projecting them attargets just by standing still.
Nothing is off-limits: it doesn’t matter how heavy an object is, her telekinesis is so advanced thatshe can lift anything with her mind, including the enemies themselves.
Komaru had become so skilled with her psychic abilities that, using her trustyMegaphone Gun, she can also transmit that telekinetic psychic energy intowavelengths and use the frequencies in her mind as a physical weapon, shootingthem like sound-waves at her opponents.
She will definitely be one who wants to fight-crime, thriving to be a local Hero and protect others.
Although, if she uses too much telekinesis or exhausts her usage of telekineticwaves with the Megaphone, she can get a headache and drain her energy.
Komaru also uses it for mundane purposes in her free-time; what’s better than being able to lift the remote and bring it to you without ever getting up off the couch?
Jataro Kemuri
Superpower(s): Art ManipulationArt Manipulation: The power to manipulate art.
Jataro can create, shape, and manipulate art and the mediasused to create them. Although, since he is still young he hasn’t yet masteredhis powers.
He refrained from using them for quite some time because he thought it made hima freak and feared rejection. Only recently has he begun to open up to hisabilities.
Jataro is limited to already-existing artworks, not able to create them out ofthin air. He mainly only manipulates his own since he doesn’t want to ruinanyone else’s hard work.
Its power also depends on the media that the artwork was made from.
He can move and manipulate paint, pencils, and other art medias telepathically and create works of art without ever lifting a finger.
Jataro wants to side with crime-fighting but thinks his powers are pretty useless, so he mainly sticks with the benefits he gets and uses them to improve his own artwork.

I’d love a part two to the Pokémon Mystery Dungeons Naegiri thing!! That was awesome to read
Anon: Kyoko please make a part 2!!!!!!!!!1!! That was great but you left me wanting moar XD!!!!!!!!!!Mod Kirigiri, for the Mystery Dungeon Au, can we have the reactions from the rest of the Detecive Society when Kyoko tells them Naegi is gone?
Tumblr media
Well… this took longer than anticipated. College is rough I suppose.
If it’s rough around the edges, well, I’ve rewritten this about 50 times, so I don’t know what to say.
Enjoy…?
(Part 1 is here if you missed it!)
…It Simply Means “I’ll See You Again Soon”
“U-um, I’m sorry to interrupt but, where’s Makoto?” Chihiro asked, and suddenly all the noise in the room ceased to exist. Kyouko felt herself unintentionally tense for a moment. Everyone began to look around, whispering to themselves about her missing partner, before finally settling their gazes onto her. She swallowed down a sigh and closed her eyes, trying to collect her thoughts.
It wasn’t that it was a difficult question to answer—it was perhaps the easiest one she’d been asked in the past few days, and it wasn’t unexpected either. No, the actual answer itself was quite simple, it was actually coming out and saying it that she hesitated on. It wasn’t that she didn’t think the others deserved to hear or could handle the truth—the day she let that stop her was the day the world actually ended. It was that she really had been putting off thinking about it since earlier that day, and the emotions that’s she’d suppressed were threatening to rear their ugly head.
She hadn’t stayed much longer in the spot they been after Makoto bid his supposed “temporary farewell”; she had too many conflicting feelings to want to remain there. And regardless of whether or not she’d wanted to, she didn’t have the time for it. She’d still had a ways to go to get back to Hope’s Peak, and given how drained she already was physically, mentally, and now emotionally as well. So she took Makoto’s attitude to heart and just kept moving forward, burying the feelings from earlier that day to deal with later.
By the time she’d finally reached Hope’s Peak again, it was dark. Still, that didn’t stop the other members of the Detective Society from practically running her over upon her return to them (including a near crushing hug from Hina that still left her sightly wheezing), nor did it stop them from bombarding her with enough questions to make her head spin. But she’d sat through patiently and explained the entire tale to them, start to finish without a detail spared, and when they realized that the entire world had just been saved, a celebration had been proposed to take place at Celete’s Cafe.
She’d been planning on quietly slipping away when the Rockruff’s absence was finally pointed out to the group as a whole.
She finally opened her eyes and kept her gaze toward the wall. “He’s… no longer around,” she answered, keeping her tone as even as possible.
“The hell? What the fuck does that mean?” Mondo snapped, a flash of fear coming over his face for a moment.
“While I disapprove of his language choice, I must agree with his question! What do you mean he’s ‘no longer here’?” Taka added.
Hina gasped. “Don’t tell me… he didn’t…” she trailed off and put her hands to her mouth at the very idea. Kyouko understood the meaning immediately.
“What you’re thinking of didn’t happen,” Kyouko was quick to shoot the idea down. “However… his time in this world did end, in a sense.” She was met with more worried and confused stares. She took in another deep breath.
She’d delivered worse news in her life before. She’d been met with sobbing and grieving family members as she told them the horrible truths, been yelled at and attacked countless times by Pokemon that were often twice her size, and never flinched in any of those situations. Her life had been threatened numerous times, yet she’d never wavered in the face of it.
So why was it this situation that was threatening to crack her carefully crafted composure so much?
Taking advantage of her silence, Byakuya sneered. “Simpletons. If your brains actually function, you’ll recall Makoto was originally a human.”
“Wait, say what!?” Hiro shouted. Ah, that was right, he wasn’t originally there when the others found out. His shock quickly morphed into anger as he stomped his feet a bit, the ground shaking beneath them all. “Stop messin’ with us! Humans aren’t real! They’re just fairytail crap!”
“Yeah, of course I remember that!” Hina huffed. Hiro’s gasp was ignored. “But what does that have to do with anything?” Her tail swished a bit behind her in irritation.
Byakuya gave her a slight glare as her tail came dangerously close to smacking him. He did a side step away from it before continuing. “Makoto’s very existing in our world implied that he was here for a specific purpose; humans don’t just turn into Pokemon all that often,”
“Yes, that’s exactly it,” Kyouko nodded, then tried her best to ignore the smug look now adorning his face “He was originally sent here with the express purpose of saving our world from Junko’s future plans—something which he’d volunteered to do.”
“W-wait, you’re for real? But he never mentioned anything like that! He seemed just as surprised as everyone else when everything went down!,” Leon exclaimed.
“Because he forgot about it. The process that sent him here unintentionally muddled his memory. He didn’t learn about this goal of his until after he and I went to investigate Mukuro’s whereabouts following her escape. Finding Junko as quickly as he did was just a coincidence,” she averted her gaze again. “And once he finally did accomplish his goal-“
“He had no reason to stay in this world any longer afterwards. There was no point in staying,” Byakuya cut in. Silence reigned through the room once more, this time with an undertone of shock and horror in it.
“…” Kyouko remained quiet as well. What was she supposed to add to it now? That was all there was to it. It was in that silence that she realized how much… dimmer, the room seemed without Makoto brightening it up.
Of course, they also wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place had he still been there.
“S-so you mean… he left, just like that?” Chihiro asked, his voice even quieter than usual. “How could he just do that…”
Sakura bowed her head in though, crossing her arms over her chest. “It does seem rather abrupt for him, yes,” she agreed.
“He promised he’d come back ok…” Hina muttered, fist clenched tightly and shaking. “He promised!”
“It wasn’t as if he had a choice in the matter. He truly didn’t want to have to leave.” She closed her eyes for a moment and suppressed a shutter at the memory of his final moments: the passionate look on his face as the light whisked him away, likely to never to be seen again. “Stop,” she told herself. This was not the time to think about that.
She opened her eyes again and looked towards Hina to distract herself. “He would like to extend his apologies, Hina, that he had to break that promise.” She felt a paw against her back and tensed for a moment. To her left she saw Sayaka standing beside her with a sympathetic expression on her face.
“I’m so sorry, Kyouko,” she said, almost whisper quiet.
She ducked of the touch. “I don’t see why you’re apologizing about it.”
“Well, I know that you were close to Makoto. It’s hardly fair that he lef-“
“What’s ‘unfair’ is for anyone to expect him to stay after all was said and done. We’re fortunate he even wanted to volunteer to save our world in the first place.” To that, no one seemed to have an immediate response. She was hoping that meant it was the end of the conversation. She did not have the patience to be arguing about this right now.
But then, Byakuya just had to open his mouth.
“Including yourself?” He jabbed back. “I hardly believe that his ‘investigative partner’ wouldn’t have any qualms about his departure, expected or not,”
“…My opinion of the situation hardly matters,” Kyouko stated, her voice still even.
“F-fine, ok yeah but… you said he wanted to stay too, didn’t you? Shouldn’t that be taken into account? It’s not fair to him!” Hina argued.
“He hadn’t regained his memories. I suspect his opinion would’ve been wildly different if he had. He had a life back in his world long before arriving here after all.” Kyouko shot back.
That wasn’t entirely true. Makoto had told her that himself; that regardless of what memories he was missing he would never regret coming to their world. That he couldn’t wait to save the world and continue investigating with her, provided she’d have him.
That was, of course, right before he’d discovered the truth of what would happen upon defeating Junko. Not that anyone needed that leg up on her.
“Well…” Hina faltered. “B-but still! It could-”
“Any of our thoughts or opinions on the matter aren’t going to change anything about the reality of it. Makoto is gone because he accomplished his mission, and he’s not coming back.” And at her own words, she found herself internally wincing.
Makoto’s words echoed through her head “This isn’t our goodbye. This is just… this is just a temporary farewell. Because we will see each other again, I won’t let it be any other way!”
She didn’t want to doubt his words; she wouldn’t have made it this far with him if she’d written off his words as empty platitudes. His words did carry a certain amount of weight to them. There was an undeniable fire that lit up in his eyes whenever he set out to do something. That fire was there in full force, through the tears that he’d been trying to keep back, as he said those words to her. She truly wanted to believe in them.
But the logical part of her, the part of her she always listened to, kept nagging at her in the back of her head any time she tried. It screamed at her about there was no reason to believe that he’d ever return, that his ‘temporary farewell’ was actually a ‘goodbye’ that he had just been to naive to see it as. That he’d been proven wrong before, he was too short sighted to believe in, and so many more reasons why.
Logically, she had no reason to believe him when he said he’d find a way back. But she wanted to anyway.
Putting faith in something or someone based almost solely on emotions was… foreign territory for her. Having to put aside her logic in favor of what was essentially blind faith was new to her—nor something she planned to make a habit, but she could make an exception this one time. Still, she was trying her best.
But as more time passed and the more she thought about it all, the logical side of her was winning through. She had to wonder how disappointed Makoto would be in her for it. She’d probably never know.
She closed her eyes and let out a quiet sigh for what felt like the hundredth time that day. She didn’t have the patience for this anymore. She picked herself up and began to stalk past the other members, her destination towards the corridor towards her room.
“H-Hey! Where are you goin? Celete’s place is the other way!” Hiro exclaimed.
She stopped and turned her head slightly to look at him and everyone else. “I’m aware, Hiro,” She continued before he could add whatever thought he’d had. “I’ll catch up later, I’d like to rest for a bit first. Tomorrow’s going to be a long day as well,”
“W-w-what’s so s-special about tomorrow?” Touko questioned.
“Because tomorrow I’m leaving Hope’s Peak,” she said.
Hiro laughed. “Oh, is that all? Then- wait a sec… WHAT!?”
She heard similar reactions shouted at her all at once.
“You can’t just leave, Kyouko!”
“Why would you even say that?! You can’t go!”
“But who else will I be able to tell such epic tales about?”
“Quit fuckin’ around! You can’t just leave!”
“And why do you say that? The Detective’s Society requires all it’s members be a part of a team, and in case you haven’t noticed, my partner is gone. I’d be in violation of the rules if I stayed.” Kyouko countered, not quite looking at the former gang member.
“Er… well…” Mondo stammered. “Junko—or Mukuro I guess—was allowed to stick around-”
“They were also manipulating the system to work however they needed it to,” she reminded him.
He scratched the back of his head. “Oh… right…”
“Still, I doubt anyone higher up would have a problem with it! You’re one of the best around! The rule is mostly for newcomers anyways!” Hina tried her best to sound encouraging.
“It doesn’t matter to me either way, I’ve made my decision.” She’d joined the Society for information regarding her father and nothing more. Or at least, that had been her initial intention.
Befriending the random stranger she’d used to get into the group had not been a part of her plan at all. She’d intended to go up in the ranks with him, as someone who could keep up with her skills at least someone, until she’d have access to their archives. After which, she would slip away to continue her solo work. She’d never liked working in large group such as this one was.
But then Makoto just had to use his childish and naive charm on her. She suspected it wasn’t intentional on his part, he wasn’t the type to be aware about that. He’d somehow managed to get her to warm up to him to the point where she considered him her best friend, and then went out of his way to help befriend the other Society members. To continue to be a pat of it without him felt… wrong.
“Well then answer me this: are you really telling the whole truth? You seemed perfectly fine with it when he was still around. Or are you just using that as an excuse?” Byakuya asked, using exaggerated air quotes.
To this, Kyouko said nothing.
She could hear the smirk. “That’s what I thought. Still, I think you’re wrong. I think we’ll be seeing both of you bright and early tomorrow. I’m not going to let two of the best members leave us just like that, after all.” Her ear twitched. There was some shuffling going on behind her, some quiet gasps, a strange ringing sound. Had she heard him correctly?
Both of you…
Both of you…?
What?
“No…” Her eyes went wide. The frantic whisperings behind her had only increased in volume, as had the strangely tinny ringing sound behind her. A ringing sound she that’d she’d heard before.
Earlier that day, in fact.
She whirled around, almost making herself dizzy in the process. But with the current sight in front of her, she didn’t care.
There was a ball of light that had descended from the sign just outside of the door to the headquarters. It was almost blinding to look at. But gradually, the light started to fade, and a silhouette could be made out from in it, one that looked distinctly small and puppy-like.
She didn’t even need to see that to know that it was him; who else could it have even been? Still, the sight of him left her at a loss for words. She probably looked ridiculous, she wagered, standing there just gaping, but that was the least of her concerns in that moment.
After what felt like an eternity passed, the light finally faded entirely. Stood in its place was Makoto, giving the group a bright grin, as if to say that nothing had ever been wrong.
His eyes narrow a bit as he scans through the crowd in search. He lets out an excited gasp when their eyes meet “Kyouko!” He exclaimed, and then-
“Oof!” He’d moved so fast that she hadn’t even realized  what was going on until he tackled her to the ground. They tumbled to the ground in a heap.
He nuzzled gently into her neck. “I told you I’d find a way,” he said quietly.
She finally snapped herself out of her stupor, and returned the affectionate gesture. “So you did,”
The whole room let out a cheer, even louder than the one she’d been greeted to upon walking in. Even those less excitable (or more apathetic in generally) were celebrating in their own ways; Byakuya was wearing a slightly more natural smirk as he let out a low chuckle, and Touko was trying her best not to look at them, lest she risk smiling.
“Alright, now this is worth celebrating about!” Leon laughed. “C’mon! Lead the way, Celeste!”
“Certainly.” The room began to shuffle out. Makoto was given a few pats on the head as some of the larger members passed by. His tail wagged in contentment at each one.
He stood up from their spot. He held out a paw to help her as well, but his eyes widened at the sight of her. “Kyouko… you’re crying!”
She raised a paw to her face. “…So I am,” she muttered. She hadn’t even noticed. Makoto raised his paw to wipe them of her face. A small smile graced her lips.
He smiled back. “So, what’s this about a celebration…?”
((Welp this took awhile. Sorry! Hope it helped heal your hearts after last time at least?))
