Big Pun - Yeeeah Baby (04/04/2000)

"Yeeeah Baby" es el segundo y último álbum de estudio del rapero Big Pun, lanzado el 4 de abril de 2000, dos meses después de su fallecimiento. Fue producido por un equipo de productores de renombre, como Knobody , Just Blaze, Younglord, Jay Garfield, Minnesota, Mahogany, KNS, Guy Boogie, The Infinite Arkatechz, Sean Cane, Ogee, Buckwild, DJ Shok, L.E.S. y Al West.

El álbum cuenta con varias colaboraciones de artistas invitados, como Prospect, Opera Steve, Donell Jones, Cuban Link, M.O.P., Tony Sunshine, Sunkiss, Remi Martin, Drag-On y Fat Joe.

El álbum fue un éxito comercial y alcanzó el puesto número 3 en la lista Billboard 200, convirtiéndose en el segundo álbum de Big Pun en ingresar al top 10. También recibió críticas positivas de los críticos de música y se considera uno de los mejores álbumes de rap de la década de 2000.

BIG PUNISHER 'YEEAH BABY!

En “Creation”, la introducción de YeeeahBaby, un científico loco intenta construir el mejor MC fusionando los talentos de Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Rakim, Eddie Murphy ("porque es un hijo de puta divertido") y Michael Jackson. (“porque tiene dinero”) con “el corazón de un indio”, “la fuerza de un negro” y “el orgullo de un español”. Ejecutado con un gran efecto cómico, el sketch sirve como un elogio preciso de los diversos talentos de Big Punisher, quien tras su muerte en febrero pasado dejó a la nación del hip hop tambaleándose por la pérdida de otro héroe en su mejor momento. Con su debut nominado al Grammy, Capital Punishment, que presentó su swing "boricua, morena" a la multitud de MTV, Pun se convirtió en el primer rapero solista latino en obtener platino, todo sin comprometer su oficio de hip hop consistentemente hardcore. Pero después de probar el éxito cruzado de su sencillo "Still Not a Player", Pun podría haber tomado fácilmente la ruta comercial por segunda vez. En cambio, ¡Yeeeah Baby! fue refrescantemente desprovisto de productores de renombre y de moda e incluye solo algunos lugares invitados fuera del propio equipo de Terror Squad. En "Watch Those", Pun rocía un aluvión lírico típicamente implacable sobre un ritmo arrasador proporcionado por el productor Knobody (de la fama de "Still Not a Player") que muestra el tema del programa policial de los años 70 Starsky and Hutch. Y “100%”, que incorpora percusión latina en vivo y un estribillo en spanglish cantado por el protegido de Pun, Tony Sunshine, es una oda a Puerto Rico con sabor a salsa que está destinada al éxito en las pistas de baile. “Soy como G Rap, Pac, Master P, animado con un toque de Marc Anthony”, proclama Pun sobre una melodía alegre producida por el recién llegado Sean Cane. En "Laughing at You", Pun relata su ascenso de paria a superestrella del rap, con una muestra inteligente del tema de la película de inadaptados de los años 80 The Breakfast Club. A medida que la canción termina, Tony Sunshine regresa para cantar el coro de "Don't You (Forget About Me)", que, a la luz del fallecimiento de Pun, es especialmente triste.
