Alrighty, it's day 2 of posting old artwork. Here are some redesigns of humanized Ga-Matoran ["Toronaiga"]: Macku, Kotu, and Hahli ["Mara, Kota, and Hale"].

I had originally designed them to be part of a mini-series about how Hale rose from her rank as lowly errand-girl to famous Kohlii champion [based on the flash game from the early 2000s], but I decided to have that plot merge with the island's main prologue/backstory instead of being a separate story arc.

Keeping with the idea of merging facial features with mask designs and personalities, I again "fused" shape elements from LEGO's kanohi masks into each character's design:

Macku/Mara:

An energetic, wild, adventurous [and somewhat rebellious] spirit, balancing Mara's personality with the sharp, fierce features of the Huna was tricky since the two seemed fundamentally opposed to each other. But having thought about it more, Mara is second-in-command of her village after the Elder, a role that would require tough decisions and firm direction in leadership.

In the end, I decided to incorporate some sharp, decisive elements to her face [chin, nostrils, square face shape] would be a good way of showcasing her internal struggle between the desire for the normal, care-free life of a child [wild curly hair, large eyes, freckles] and her confidence in her ability to lead her people.

Kotu/Kota:

A prim and proper personality who believes firmly in established order, structure, and earning your place in society, her design is modelled to closely resemble/imitate the Village Elder's [Turaga Nokama/"Noehli Agota"] in both their face shapes [Rau Mask] and individual hairstyles.

Other elements from the Rau in Kota's design include her lips, nose, and downturned almond-shaped eyes.

Hahli/Hale:

Another redesign [More of a touch-up than a redesign, I think?] of my original design for Hale. Not much has changed, but I wanted to polish more of the Kaukau's shape in her re-design [triangle-shaped lips, short nose bridge, and round cheeks]. I also wanted to convey her youthfulness and innocence in her design too [round face shape, large eyes], along with her cheekiness and unpredictability on the Kohlii playing field with her wild, flippy, choppy hairstyle.

Macku and Hewkii running through Ga-Koro's beach 🧡💙

This one is a fanart I made back in 2021. You might also notice the shaky coloring and that's because back then I had just taken off my cast after healing from an elbow fracture and was still recovering from said fracture's surgery 😂

I found no better way to celebrate my recovering than by drawing these sweethearts in a kinda Bohrok Online Animations style 💙🧡

Interesting to think of why the Turaga chose their respective right and left-hand Matoran. Like, Jaller was probably an obvious choice for Vakama, having been a good friend if his back in Ta-Metru… but Kapura? Being a bit of a misfit with some unusual capabilities, I think Vakama saw a lot of himself in the eccentric Matoran, and by elevating him to a respected position, Vakama is trying to make sure other Matoran won’t be bullied the way he was for his differences.

Nokama, rather than picking a former top student or respected teaching colleague, instead picked Macku and Kotu- a pair of free spirited pranksters who love weird sea creatures, to be her right and left hands. This may in part be pragmatic- she wants them where she can keep an eye on them, perhaps, but I like to think she wanted to be able to get input on her leadership decisions from the perspective of people very different from herself, especially since she was now going to be living far away from her brothers…

Onewa, I imagine made Hafu, former Master carver of Po-Metru his left hand rather than right in the hopes that it would take Hafu’s famous ego down a notch or two (lol nope), and Hewkii as someone with a complimentary skillset to Hafu’s to balance things out.

Matoran Macku

Having made a scuffed lightbox for a different project, I figured it was time to share my matoran gang, starting with my favorite.

My parts choice for this model was to get as much color variety as possible in order to build the characters I wanted, AND, I absolutely wanted to use the mctoran foot for Mata-Nui authenticity.

From there I wanted to get as much poseability as I could, because I love posing figures.

I like juuust a hint of sexual dimorphism in my Bonks, so Macku and other Ga-Matoran I've built have a slightly longer axle and a set of spacers in their hips. The classic Gali chest piece was also used here but that steadily became a non exclusive trait as I built matoran in stranger colors and needed the socket pieces to fill out their schemes.

I consider this body configuration to be the post-bohrok rebuild, with a little Mask of Light mixed in.

I'll post some more later because I built a ton of these gremlins.

My dumb complaint about Mask of Light is that we didn’t get any cute Hewkii/Macku moments. I appreciate the adorableness we got with Jaller/Hahli, but the absolute disrespect to the og bionicle couple :c

I feel like it would have been so easy to include something too?

That part when Guurahk is tearing apart Ta-Koro and we see the two ta-matoran huddled together inside the hut? Could have been Hewkii and Macku. Or that part when they’re all fleeing Ta-Koro across the bridge and Macku is holding hands with that random ta-matoran? Could have been Hewkii holding her hand. Even just like, having them in the background comforting each other after Ta-Koro was destroyed.

I realize this is a dumb thing to complain about but it’s been 20 years and I’m still salty about it hELP.

Here is my version of Toa Macku, inspired by SomeBionicleFan's version, as well as an old render of Hewkii giving Macku a toa stone. I imagine that after the reformation of Spherus Magna, Hewkii would offer to transform Macku into a toa so they can fight side by side as toa. Macku would join the Toa Mahri, bringing their number of members back up to six, with Takanuva acting as an occasional seventh toa while still also being part of the Toa Nuva. I also just really felt like Macku would wield a sword, maybe a different weapon would suit her more though, I'm not sure.
