I want you to imagine:
Hewkii having so much difficulty describing his relationship with Macku to Gresh and
Gresh's just: "Oh, yeah, Dating."
And out of nowhere Macku grabs him by the shoulders and spins him around and yells "THERES A WORD FOR IT?"
Gresh's invited to their wedding two weeks later

Headcanon that Skrall as a species are essentially doomed on Spherus Magna.
Even though they are warriors of the highest caliber, 100,000 years of war, starvation, and the loss of every female of their species leads to a slow, inevitable decline.
Ruthlessly culling any member of their species that wasn't a high-class warrior meant that there was no investment in education or skilled labor. The only way their society functioned was to rely on pillaging and slave labor to obtain food, medicine, and essentially everything that didn't involve stabbing.
Given their very rigid social system, it didn't seem like female Skrall had much say or power in their society. On Bara Manga, the second they did get mental powers they were considered a threat and banished to the wilds. Canonically, the male and female Skrall also separated into two societies on Bota Manga.
After that point, the population replacement rate was 0 and the male Skrall were in an endless war with the Agori for resources. While they never really lost fights, that didn't mean that they weren't losing people to disease, injury, and old age.
And then Mata Nui came along and curb-stomped the only leader-cast member of their species they had left. The remaining male Skrall dispersed into smaller groups led by named Skrall or high-tier casts.
And then Teridax came along.
A huge portion of their remaining population was atomized when Teridax blasted their home in the Black Spike Mountains. The remaining groups decided to join the free-for-all fight between the Agori, Toa, Rahkshi, and Skakdi.
And even as amazing warriors in a normal fight, there's no way the Skrall did anything but get their shit kicked in against armies of beings with ranged supernatural powers. A sword is great, but not much use when all your opponents can do things like suck the oxygen from your lungs, or summon a mountant to crush you without breaking a sweat.
Plus, every Agori and Glatorian hates their guts and wouldn't hesitate to gut any Skrull injured or trapped by the absolute free-for-all that was Bara Magna.
Anyone who survived the bloodbath and subsequent reformation of Spherus Magna, including adding Bota Magna Skrull to their ranks, is still looking at a very grim future.
The Skrall are now outclassed by almost every sentient species (and most wildlife) on the planet in terms of power and resources. Their home and leader cast are gone, and they have no slaves left (all killed or emancipated by Toa) to produce goods or labor. Their species is still split into two societies by gender and getting together long enough to have kids probably isn't in the cards.
A few Skrall are hired on by the Dark Hunters, but given their lack of powers, they would be best as cannon fodder, or as combat trainers to beings with greater powers.
Every other remaining male Skrall group is going to have their shit kicked in by every other group the second they try to cause trouble. And the Baterra are probably still picking off warriors whenever and wherever they find them.
Their population has plummeted over the last 100,000 years and the remaining members of the species are essentially the last generation.
The best hope their species has is that the female Skrall, being less militant and having no mental powers left, join with Agori or Glatorian society. They might be closely related enough that they can have children with the Glatorian or Agori.
If so, any future Skrall are at most 50-50 genetically split with another species. Subsequent generations will have thinner and thinner Skrall genetics, and they'll be extinct as an individual species.
Given that they were absolute bastards as a species and society in-canon, that might be for the best. Banishing every member of your society that can have children, and then going to endless war with every one of your neighbors forever is essentially biological suicide.

The Agori are a feared cult of warrior mercenaries. The highest honour in Agori society is to bring glory and resources to their sect. To better aid them in this task the Agori make extensive use cybernetics to increase their combat prowess, with the most extreme and noticeable being the full body replacement of the Agori Warsuit. Heavily armed and armoured the Warsuit is part walking tank, part life support system. Deep inside the Warsuit there will is a living warrior surgically merged with the armour. Sustained by the Warsuit the Agori warrior within can live for centuries, bringing glory and riches to their sect through unending battle. Over this time it is not uncommon for a Warsuit to acquire trophies and decoration to commemorate its many achievements in war. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #art #artist #painting #oilpaint #oilpainting #traditionalart #illustration #illustrator #thomaselliott #thomaselliottartist #thomaselliottillustrator #darksong #scifi #scifiart #robot #mech #mecha #giantrobot #agori #agoriwarsuit #cyborg #grimdark #armour #conceptart https://www.instagram.com/p/Crdnd0vqEPM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tbh I wonder if it's even necessary to make the distinction between Glatorian and Agori as separate species, and for that matter, the Skrall and Bone Hunters. I do appreciate the idea of retroactively having the Matoran and Toa be recreations of the society that created them, but on the other hand, making it all one species within the lore would also help to differentiate the setting as more grounded, especially with the removal of elemental powers and Kanohi;
In general, Bara Magna's stories feel more human with how the cast struggles with human problems like getting enough food and water, poor working conditions, wages, etc. It's what helps differentiate the setting from the Matoran Universe, and leaning into that helps Bara Magna stand out in its own compelling way. Come to think of it, one could easily imagine everyone as human in these stories, and it wouldn't really change a thing nor contradict lore, minus the Glatorian and Agori being ridiculously long-lived; But that can be explained via cybernetic enhancements and the Great Beings' experiments.
But that gets me back to my main point; It'd be easy to explain the height difference with Glatorian as just genetic, species variation as one can see in humans themselves. And of course the bigger Agori gravitate towards the Glatorian profession, because it's one where their physique gives them a natural leg up over their peers; And it's not as if anyone has the privilege to choose jobs they enjoy vs ones that put food on the table.
In the first half of 2009, we're introduced to Berix, who wants to participate in the arena someday. Now we do have the Glatorain game, both its in-universe and real life counterparts, to justify this; Agori function as a separate game piece in the rules. But if Agori can fight alongside Glatorian in the ring, why not have Agori vs Agori matches, especially when the dilemma of tribes not having enough Glatorian is a thing?
Plus, this brings us to the second wave of 2009, which introduces a lot of Agori who can fight in the arena (even against Glatorian such as Perditus) via the great equalizer of vehicles; And then there's Telluris, who's a perfect middle-ground between Agori and Glatorian in terms of stature. Body types don't have to be canonized as a separate species, because sure the Skrall are built different, but so are Kiina and Strakk, who are nevertheless Glatorian. It avoids falling into the trope of the Evil Race, and again, humanizes the story even more by making it all one species. By the end of the day, the term Glatorian canonically only refers to the occupation, and not the larger species, which is technically still unnamed.

Been giving the 'Matoran Universe' side of things a lot of attention, so decided to give the non MU side of things some love. The Agori
The Natives of Spherus Magna, and later Bara Magna after the Shattering. They are a race of hardy organic beings with naturally metallic skeletons. they are exceptionally long lived, which is only further enhanced by the common use of cybernetic implants in the race.
They are divided into various Tribes across the world, each taking a name relevant to an element important to their society, or naming themselves after where they live.
Zesk A sub-race of Agori, and all that remains of the Sand Tribe. They were modified by the Great Beings into a more beastial form, and slowly over time devolved into little more than animals. Most Zesk however, are able to be acclimated into civilized society under the right circumstances.
Glatorian A species of beings closely related to the Agori, but larger and stronger. They often live in the Triebs alongside Agori. After the Shattering, Glatorian picked up the role of protectors of the Agori. They protected their younger relatives from the various threats of Bara Magna.
Eventually, as things settled and resources began to dwindle, wars broke out amongst the Agori, Glatorian, and the Skrall. Eventually, things settled with the creation of the Glatorian Arenas. Glatorian would fight in the arenas to earn resources for their Tribes.
Though Glatorian is traditionally the name of a race, it has since evolved into a title as well. Anyone who fights in a Glatorian Arena earns the title of Glatorian, regardless of what they are. Agori, Skrall, Matoran, Toa, etc.
Vorox Similar to the Zesk, the Vorox were Glatorian of the Sand Tribe, modified by the Great Beings. Like their smaller cousins, the Vorox devolved into aggressive desert wondering animals. They too can be acclimated into society, but doing so is much more difficult due to their enhanced strength and durability.
Skrall Another close relative of the Agori and Glatorian, though distinct, the Skrall are a race of strong and durable people. They live alongside Agori in the Stone Tribe.
Skrall culture is rather violent, more so than Agori and Glatorian culture. In recent years however, after the Reformation things have begun to mellow out however. Even before then, many individual Skrall have incorporated themselves into other tribes.
Kaadrix is one such Skrall. He was exiled from the Stone Tribe before the Reformation. He wandered alone for a long time, before finding a tribe called the Mountain Tribe. He was able to incorporate himself into the tribe.
Koza is a Skrall warrior that has heavily modified himself through cybernetics. He is much stronger than most other Skrall. He's infamous for his brutality in the Arena, having torn another Glatorian by the name of Telrakk apart.
Gelra a Glatorian of the Water Tribe. She's a strong, burly warrior with an ego to her. She's well known for her outstanding strength, surprisingly able to match Koza in hand to hand combat on numerous occassions, and typically choosing to fight other Glatorian who are using vehicles or mounts.
Telrakk was an up and coming Glatorian for a branch of the Jungle Tribe. He suffered a particularly nasty loss at the hands of Koza, leaving him severely injured. Eventually, much of body was replaced by mechanics as a result. Over time his off shoot of the Jungle Tribe would run into hardship with Bone Hunters, and during a rematch with Koza, his Tribe's home was razed by the bandits. His return to his destroyed home lead him to become
Talrakk the Conqueror an infamous warlord who uses engineered robots as his army. He intends to conquer as much of the Spherus Magna as he can to forcefully protect it from outside threats with his mechanical troops.

If I could change one thing about bionicle lore it would definitely be the ages of the bara magna inhabitants. They are supposed to be organics with finite lifespans but since all of them were alive during the shattering, that fact can kinda be forgotten easily. In my new headcanon I would definitely make it so the core war was fought by ancestors. I definitely believe that the cybernetic enhancements of the Agori and glatorian enhances their lifespans to a longer degree. If I had to pick ages I鈥檇 say a normal agori and glatorian鈥榮 lifespan are around 100 to 150 years, but it gets stretched up to a thousand even with the cybernetics. I鈥檇 also make Gresh and Berix actual young adults like they鈥檙e supposed to be. It was always scuffed to me that Gresh is considered a young warrior when he is literally thousands of years old, so now he鈥檚 going to be 21

"History will tell you that I am a monster, a slaver, someone who made a living capturing my fellow Agori and selling them to the Skrall. I'd be a fool to lie and pretend I did not do those things; of course I did. But there is more to the story than just that, and there is one thing you need to always remember about history: the winners write all the books."
A Sahmad fanart I made! He's one of my favorite Bionicle characters and I love him so much. He deserved so much better, story did him dirty and in the end he saved people who shunned him and his tribe in times of need and people who he didn't even know. An amazing character 馃А

Matoran universe inhabitants arent ready for hair.
Imagine Kiina mentioning that her hair is coming loose, takes off her helmet, quickly re does it, and puts her helmet back on.
The toa next to her is just staring in panic because what WAS that- what was that?? Cranial wires? Taking your mask off is a dicey proposition for matoran & toa at best, but to see someone just... casually...?
It's gonna take a lot of explaining, is what I'm getting at.

It's fascinating sometimes how wildly different Bionicle fans see the characters in their minds' eyes. Because while we know that the set forms are just an abstraction of their appearance based on how they move and act in the story, there's a wide spectrum of just how abstracted fans imagine them to be.
The movies were many fans' first introduction to this concept, that there's more to their physical form than we see in the toys, there's flesh and sinew around it all, and on top of all of that, mouths for every character. But given how the movies deviated from and abridged the greater story, and also redesigned the appearance of many characters for more homogeneous designs (for better or worse, they stole Pohatu's hips and gave him and Onua long arms, among other changes), the movie depictions never settled as the "definitive" look in the community.
Designs I've seen among other fans since I started interacting with the community have varied greatly. There are those I'm not too fond of, like designs that take the abstraction to an extreme and make the Toa and Matoran basically humans with cybernetic patterns on their very fleshy bodies, and designs that basically make them into armored soldiers like something out of Halo or Destiny, for instance. I just don't like how very "human in a costume" these feel. And there are designs I can appreciate, such as some hybrid movie/set designs I've seen in the canon contests, and various comics I've seen scattered on here and Discord.
Personally, I like the skeletal/alien look of the toys, and like to factor that into my mental picture of how the characters look. In my mind, Toa and Matoran have three layers: mechanical skeleton, synthetic biological tissue, and armor. A Toa without any tissue or armor would be like if you took the Toa Inika, gave them metru heads, and took away all armor pieces on the limbs, their masks, their chestplates, etc. Skeletal and unseemly, with equally long arms and legs. In my mind, the tissue would then fill the chest cavity with lungs and wrap sinewy muscles around the joints in place of servos like a robot would have. And then armor would be placed around the body to protect these organic and skeletal components in key places. The mask would be static over the head; I greatly dislike Toa with mouths and expressive faces outside of Toa Inika with their organic Kanohi. To ingest herbs for antidotes, they would lift up their mask and place it in the circular opening on their head, where it would be molecularized and ingested; this would be the closest they have to a "mouth" like an organic being. Its placement there would simply be due to their creation by organics, the Great Beings.
The difference between a Toa and a Glatorian then, despite following similar body plans, would be obvious in the design of their heads and in the amount of biological tissue. Glatorian and Agori, being cyborgs, would have fully organic limbs with armor and cybernetic attachments. But otherwise, from a distance, one could easily mistake a Toa for a very emaciated Glatorian with a large, static mask, as one was created in the image of the other.
Anyway, this was just a stream-of-consciousness reflection on the appearance of Bionicle's primary cast of characters, with a heavy detour into my own headcanon and interpretation, as I don't think I've ever fully put this out there before. You're welcome to disagree, and if one if the things I listed unfavorably is reflected in art you like or make yourself, know I'm not singling you out and value the bredth of interpretation in fandom. To each their own, and these are just my personal tastes on my personal blog.

I've been trying to find out more information on exactly how Magnan aging works for a potential future knowledge tower video, but unfortunately the only thing I've found so far is this Greg quote:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which isn't helpful.
Ignoring the mechanism behind how they have such a long lifespan for now (be it natural or artificial, as that's a separate line of research I've also got going on) I see two possibilities:
1.) They mature relatively quickly to adulthood then age very slowly from there (think Elves in D&D - they develop at about the same rate as humans, but once physically mature they live for a very long time. They are also only culturally considered adults at age 100, even though they have already been physically adults for decades - could the Magnans have a similar system?)
2.) Their rate of ageing doesn't change at any point, so they take hundreds or even thousands of years to develop into maturity (think Yoda's/Grogu's species from Star Wars)
I wanted to get other people's opinions on this, which of the above two options do you think is most likely given what we know from the Bionicle storyline? Or are there other possibilities that I'm missing?
