What’s a Soulmate?
“What’s a soulmate, ‘Soka?”
Erik Trekum stood at the edge of the forest of Yavin, watching as his riduur, Nine, taught a younger clone trooper how to lift something with the force. He watched as the young trooper lit up like a kid in a candy store when the rock in front of him moved, and Nine smiled at his student. The two clones laughed brightly, one happy for his student and the other excited to have reached another level in his training.
“A soulmate is... well, it’s like a best friend but more. It’s the one person in the world that knows you better than anyone else.”
Erik smiled fondly as he watched Nine dismiss his student, giving the younger clone time to go be with the other kids. Nine turned his head, locking his gaze with Erik. The former medical officer smiled at him, warmth and love blooming over their bond. Nine walked over to him, stepping through the small meadow outside the temple.
“It’s someone that makes you a better person. Actually, they don’t make you a better person- you do that yourself, because they inspire you.”
Erik smiled softly as Nine stepped up to him, pulling him close to kiss him softly. The kiss tasted of spring; warm honey and sweet oranges. Just like always.
“He’s getting better,” Erik smiled up at Nine when they parted.
“He’s getting there slowly,” Nine laughed, knocking their foreheads together.
Erik laughed lightly, leaning in Nine’s space, melting under the clone’s shields. Nine was stronger than him now. Force exhaustion had done a lot of damage to the dark Jedi’s force presence. Too much war and not enough peace. Jedi were never meant to be soldiers for a reason.
Some Jedi had gotten sick over the past few years, the consequences of fighting in a war settling in their bones. Erik had managed to teach a few more students before he had to quit and leave the teaching to Nine. PTSD, force echoes, night terrors, and force exhaustion had done a number on the Jedi who fought in the war. Erik especially.
“A soulmate is someone who you carry with you forever. It’s the one person who knew you and accepted you and believed in you before anyone else did, or when no one else would.”
“You take your medicine yet,” Nine asked quietly, watching his lover.
“Yeah. Took it when I woke up. Saw you made breakfast. Thank you, it was good” Erik nodded, leaning to kiss Nine’s cheek in thanks and then pulling back.
“I’m glad you liked it,” Nine smiled back at him, cupping Erik’s cheek.
“And no matter what happens, you will always love them. Nothing can ever change that.”
“That sounds amazing, ‘Soka! Do you think I’ll ever find my soulmate?”
“I don’t know, vod’ika. I hope you will.”
“C’mon, let’s take a walk. You’ve been teaching for hours,” Erik smiled lightly, grabbing Nine by the hand to pull him to the small walking trail they had.
“Alright, alright. When we get back though I’m giving you a check up,” Nine smiled softly as he held on to Erik’s hand and walked beside him.
“Always taking care of me,” Erik smiled up at him.
“Always,” Nine promised softly, kissing Erik’s forehead as they began their walk.
“I hope you find your soulmate and they love you just as much as you love them.”
