A nice blunt-headed burrowing frog [Glyphoglossus molossus] sitting in the soil in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. These frogs spend much of the year buried in the ground, but are often uprooted by accident by farmers and gardeners. Image by Ingkayut Sa-ar.

Get to know the blunt-headed burrowing frog (Glyphoglossus molossus)! This amphibian is also known as the balloon frog because of its spherical body shape.🎈🐸🎈 It lives in parts of Southeast Asia including Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand, where it inhabits forests and wetlands, spending much of its time underground. During breeding season, it comes to the surface and takes advantage of seasonal rain pools to release up to 300 eggs. Unfortunately, the species is threatened due in part to humans catching the frogs for consumption when they come out to breed. Its giant, chubby appearance is due to a self-defense technique in which it inflates itself with air in order to look more formidable when it feels in danger. The species of the frog is the Blunt-headed Burrowing Frog, also called Glyphoglossus molossus.

May I offer you a blunt-headed burrowing frog [Glyphoglossus molossus]? These plump microhylids are also referred to as “balloon frogs” for their large, round bodies. They can be found in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Image by Don Injabok.
