finally seated to watch Princess Mononoke after putting it off for like 3 weeks, really interesting opening, right now it feels like it'll be like a variation on Nausicaä's themes.

#james talks #james watches stuff #princess mononoke #studio ghibli #hayao miyazaki #also this is really why i hate watching subbed stuff sometimes like usually fansubs is what i go with when available bc i do believe they— #translate closer to the original language rather than interpretation for a western audience and i compared the fansub against 2 different— #official subs (one from a bluray and one from the streaming release) and they all say entirely different stuff #i think i'll be sticking to the fansub bc it appears to be the closest to the actual words rn but my god it's annoying when they don't matc #like some stuff being translated i understand (for example the fansub doesn't translate 'hii-sama' as 'oracle' or 'wise woman' like— #the official subs do) but then some stuff entirely has different meaning (like asking the beast why it's raging vs asking it to— #leave the village alone). it's just really annoying like— #please just do a direct translation and if there's cultural context! that's what brackets are for! #you can just put things for extra context in brackets! #anyway back to the movie. #also #another fansub vs official difference that's not really *that* different but the fansub calls the spirits in the forest 'gods' but one of— #the official subs (i believe it's the bluray) calls them 'spirits of nature' and like. those do not have the same connotations. #the streaming subs all calls them 'gods' i believe. but like. please. just like. direct translations. i'm begging.

am having the weirdest issue w/ this dvd i bought online, where like, it plays but the video is deeply fucked up and jerky/skipping therefore unsyncing it from the audio (which is fine). BUT. only on the xbox. i found one single solitary review saying it ended up working fine on a regular dvd player and lo and behold, tried it on my dad's laptop and it's true! How? Why? Who Fucking Knows! Now i gotta go dig our fucking oldass dvd player outta basement storage bc lord knows neither my new laptop nor my old laptop has one -_-

it's fuckin weird, tho, right? Like, there were other amazon reviews mentioning the issue but just the one about the xbox vs dvd drive thing, and there were def other ppl positively reviewing the dvd itself and not just the movie (they mentioned the extra features). i also kept finding one-off comments on various reddit threads that mention the issue but never any resolution. i even logged on to facebook (gag) on my computer and scrolled alllllll the way back to 2017/2018 on the movie's official fb page and again. just the occasional comment about the issue and like 1 single reply on 1 comment mentioning the xbox thing ://///

#also its just. not a gr8 quality dvd? its NOT a bootleg but u could be forgiven 4 thinking so based on packaging #and the video is a lot more grainy than when i watched on streaming. Went on a fun little mall run cause I haven't done that in like months, and I've now just arrived back home with a fun little haul. Bought a movie and a couple of cds, but only a couple are worth actually showing off lol.

The first of which are the two new children I bought for my ever expanding collection of dragons 🥺

But by far my most exciting purchase (and the one that actually had me gasping out loud and nearly screaming) was this stupid little game

it's a shame MJ didn't record multiple HIStory shows in HD. he could have done one of the earlier ones in HD because his voice did sound a bit better, like in Auckland.

I know it costs a lot of money to shoot a show for a DVD release, but he had laryngitis doing the second leg of the tour, including Munich. Which is the one concert that is fit for a DVD release. Uuuuugh I'm sad.

(i read that he didnt end up releasing Munich on DVD because he didnt like the sound of his voice, i dont know if this is 100% correct though, but it sounds a lot like something he'd say since he was a perfectionist. and it sucks because it's one of his best shows choreography-wise)
