Teams: Manly's axing after show-stopping game
Tumblr media
The NRL's form player of the year, Tom Trbojevic, is set to make his return for the Sea Eagles after missing round 23 with a facial injury.Last week, Trbojevic was ruled out as a precaution amid conflicting reports the superstar fullback had damaged a pre-existing facial fracture.
Tumblr media
Tom Trbojevic (Getty)While serious injury concerns were put to bed, the Sea Eagles took no chance, resting their talisman who is set to make an emphatic return against the Bulldogs this week.Meanwhile, star teammate Moses Suli has been dropped from Des Hasler's squad despite putting up a stellar man of the match performance last week. Suli has been dropped to reserves, replaced by Brad Parker who slots straight into the centres.

(Getty)Elsewhere, it's tough luck for the Tigers who have the unfortunate task of taking on the Panthers without standout star Adam Doueihi who has been sidelined with a knee injury. To make matters harder for Michael Maguire's men, star winger Brian To'o has made an early return from injury and will line up on Sunday evening.Meanwhile, the Raiders have dumped halfback Sam Williams after back-to-back critical losses to the Storm and Manly.

Before Night Falls
The story told in Before Night Falls is one that describes the life story of Reinaldo Arena, and the hardships he faced through his journey as a young boy in Cuba, to a grown man in NYC. The story of his journey is particularly intriguing because it is one of shock as it describes events and experiences in Cuba during a time when no one knew what was really occurring there. Arena’s tone throughout describing his experiences varies and can sometimes be of more reminiscent than anything else. While Arena reflects on some experiences that may seem morbid or traumatizing, he does so in a way that assures the reader that he did not regret or fall victim to his hardships and very different upbringing. Reading his story made me feel sadness for him, that his youth was filled with poverty and many different instances of sexual abuse and the violent encounters his faced during his time in communist Cuba. A large part of Arena’s story included sexuality, and his own curiosities he dealt with on an island that viewed homosexuality as a disgrace. Arena reflects on an experience that made him aware of this view on homosexuality while a student La Pantoja when two boys were caught performing sexual acts together: “Their comrades were supposed to come from their lodging ands and throw stones at them and beat them up. It was a sinister expulsion because it also included a dossier that would follow each person for the rest of his life and would bar him admission to any other state school… and I realized being a “faggot” in Cuba was one of the worst disasters that could ever happen to anyone” (Arenas, 48). Homophobia was a very deeply grounded issue in Cuba at the time Arena was living through, and in fact had worsened during the Cuban Revolution. Fidel Castro coming into power brought about increasing levels of homophobia within Cuba as stated in previous articles: “Homosexuality is revolutionary in Cuba: not because it is at the vanguard of political thought and action, not because it embodies the ideals of regime, but because it has become, all too closely, bound to the image, especially abroad, of the revolution itself” (Epps, 231). Arena’s story illustrates the interrelation of dissidence, homosexuality and literature because he found himself fighting against a government and state that was against all three. The Cuban government was fearful of literature as it could expose its faults. The Cuban government under Castro’s control had become severely aggressive towards homosexuals as Arena has exposed: “The Castro regime, in other words, regarded women, along with homosexuals, as inferior beings”, (Arena, 151). Arena had become a writer whose work reflected these corrupt and horrid foundations of this very government. Arena’s literature was a direct example of dissent against the government under Castro and its grasp on homophobia. Unfortunately, Arena’s expression through literature and homosexuality led him down a torturous path. After his imprisonment for which he had suffered terrible conditions, he fled and was in exile. The trauma experienced by Arena were those of which I cannot imagine ever surviving. The effects he endured from this exile were extreme: “In exile one is nothing but a ghost, the shadow of someone who never achieves full reality. I ceased to exist when I went into exile; I started to run away from myself,” (Arena, 303). I mentioned earlier how I felt sad reading Arena’s story; however, I also felt a sense of proudness for him that we able to make it through all he did and share his story of the corruption back in his homeland. While it is quite unfortunate to see his story was shared under such circumstances and which he succumbed to in the end, it’s important that stories like this is are exposed to the world. Arena’s goal to shed light on these horrors was met in my opinion, and it put so poetically into the most beautiful and saddening book. While much has been exposed regarding the Cuban government under Castro and the oppression of sexual minorities in the years to follow, change was still far away: “The
revolution’s very real struggle to stay afloat—in the face of one economic crisis after another, the dissolution of the socialist bloc, continued hostility from the United States, and the double-edged “solution” which is tourism—has inevitably kept issues such as gender, race, and sexuality on the back burner,” (Hutchison, 196). The stories Arena shares are those that many other individuals have experienced in Cuba under the same circumstances, and his writing reflects the strength and bravery it takes to survive such horrors and to risk one’s life to expose them.

Tumblr media
Squeeze
Tumblr media
Beyond the Sea
Tumblr media
The Erlenmeyer Flask
Tumblr media
The Host

2017 SPIRIT BOX BREAK - PACK 23
293. Paul Clemens 28. Bruce Rondon 92. Aaron Sanchez 175. Tim Beckham 273. Andrew Miller 110. Nick Tropeano 268. Scott Kazmir 65. Drew Hutchison 19. Robert Gsellman (RC) G64. Brad Boxberger TL83. Kyle Hendricks - Team Leader (CHC-ERA)
I’m not sure what kind of presence Hendricks has in the hobby right now but I’m guessing it’s on the rise. Not a lot of “value” in this pack but there are some great photos. The Clemens, Miller and Kazmir in particular are rather strong.
Alright, one final pack coming up tomorrow. Looks like it’ll be a good one.

Kipnis’ HR Helps Tribe Take Series.
Twins 3 Indians 5 W-Clevinger (10-7) L-Odorizzi (5-9) SV-Hand (30)
The Minnesota Twins had the Cleveland Indians number this year. That quickly changed when the Twins traded away some players at the trade deadline. The Indians have tied the season series and looked to take the deciding game this afternoon at Progressive Field. Neither side scored for the first three innings today as Jake Odorizzi and Mike Clevinger tossed up zeroes. Michael Brantley started a rally in the fourth with a double and Edwin Encarnacion singled him home and the Tribe had a one-run lead. The Twins would come right back in the fifth as Mitch Garver reached on an error. Ehire Adrianza smoked a Mike Clevinger fastball out to right for a two-run shot and the Twins had a 2-1 edge. The Indians would come back in a big way in the sixth. Jake Odorizzi walked two guys with one out that started the rough inning. Alan Busenitz came on and Yonder Alonso singled a run home to tie the game at two. Later in the inning, Jason Kipnis smacked a Busenitz offering out to right for a three-run blast and the Indians had 5-2 lead after six innings. Meanwhile, Mike Clevinger tossed 6 2/3 solid innings and the bullpen did the rest. Oliver Perez and Cody Allen bridged the gap to Brad Hand. Miguel Sano started the ninth off with a bang as he blasted a Brad Hand fastball out to right for a solo blast. Hand would finish off the ninth and the Tribe took the season series from the Twins in 2018.
-Final Thoughts- Jake Odorizzi pitched well then hit a wall in the sixth. He lasted 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Alan Busenitz was charged with two runs in 2/3 of an inning, Oliver Drake had a clean seventh, and Gabriel Moya had a 1-2-3 eighth. The Twins scattered five hits today and did not have an at-bat with a runner in scoring position. They left five men on base. It sounds like the Twins traded Bobby Wilson to the Cubs for Chris Gimenez. It’s good to have Gimenez back and I think the Twins will activate him on Saturday when rosters expand in September. After the game, the Twins head to Arlington to play the Rangers this weekend. Stephen Gonsalves will face Drew Hutchison in the series opener.
