background

sam was born in portland, maine in a very simple, mid-to-lower class family. his father, wesley, worked in the mines out of state while his mother, rose, worked on the outskirts of portland at the front desk of a motel. sam was a troublesome kid and often found himself in trouble, especially by his dad who worked to keep his boys in line and well-behaved with a strict and tough-love approach. his father was away for his two weeks of work and his older brother tommy was on the other side of the country for college when the world ended. not knowing what to do, rose packed up whatever she could and took sam to the motel to hide away. the pair remained there, locked up in the motel office for weeks and only venturing out for supplies when they were on their final rations. the more time that passed, the less rose ventured out with sam, giving him the responsibility of scouting and scavenging for supplies. soon enough, he grew more and more comfortable with the outdoors and taught himself to survive. each morning, he'd head outside to work around the motel — eliminating the dead and building a wall around the front entrance of the property with whatever objects he could find scattered about. the motel would soon go on to house eight more survivors before a group of bandits found them, pillaging their home and eliminating any of them that resisted. all but sam and his mom were killed that night, left with nothing but wounds and empty stomachs. within the next 48 hours, rose would succumb to her wounds, leaving sam with no choice but to put her down to avoid re-animation. sam packed a bag and left on foot on his own, with no desire to remain in the place where he lost his mom. his next destination were the mines where his father was located, sure he'd still be there because of the highly secure property it was on. however, after nearly two whole weeks of traveling and finally arriving on property, he quickly learned that his father was among the dead that roamed the gated location. his final attempt at reconnecting with his family was to find his brother, tommy. with no real idea where exactly his brother was attending college, sam made the decision to just wander west — hedge his bets down the center of the united states. weeks would turn into months, and sam would soon find himself starving and desperate for rest and, with luck on his side, he is saved and taken into the care of elizabeth winchester. understanding the likelihood of finding his brother and his own survival, as well as listening to the opinion of elizabeth, sam decided to let go of his past and remain with elizabeth as one of her own. since the beginning of the domus spei, sam has been an active member. he was quick to show interest in and join the militia, growing in his experience quickly and becoming a prized member of the group. he's very intelligent and loyal but also bad-tempered and closed off, which often controls his responses to dire situations. however, he truly means well and wants to see the group survive more than anything so he pours all of his energy into it because he's a genuinely good guy, he just has a poor way of showing it sometimes.

mutual dislike: they just can't see eye to eye on anything and get into fights frequently because of it. taken by no one (open to 1).

his soft spot: sam has a horrible way of showing his emotions the right way, settling for negative emotions above all else before he can transition into much more neutral or positive ones (situational of course). this person, however, is someone he just melts around. he would go above and beyond for them, and if they told him to jump he'd truly ask how high. this is the person that sam has feelings for, whether it's mutual or not is up to you. taken by no one (open to 1 + femme).

mentor: the first person that took sam under their wing after elizabeth, and taught them everything they know. sam looks up to them as a friend and a guardian of sorts, and feels safest when around them if his family is nowhere around. take by no one (open to 1 and must be militia or hunter).
