#OTD in 1891 – Birth of Bridget Hitler, née Dowling in Tallaght, Co Dublin. She was Adolf Hitler's sister-in-law via her marriage to Alois Hitler, Jr.
In 1909, when she was seventeen, she and her father, William Dowling, attended the Dublin Horse Show where they met Alois Hitler, Jr., who claimed to be a wealthy hotelier touring Europe when, in fact, he was a poor waiter at Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel. Alois courted Bridget at various Dublin locales and soon they were discussing marriage. On 3 June 1910, the couple eloped to London, living in…

New Streamlined Church and a Street Renamed
In 1938, Minneapolis’s northside welcomed a new streamlined church, St. Austin’s Catholic Church, at the northeast corner of Washburn Ave. N and 38th Ave. N. Designed by Minneapolis architects Bard and Vanderbilt, but heavily influenced by the church’s pastor, Rev. James Troy, and his worldly travels (to Brno, Czechoslovakia in particular), the church was an unusually modern, white stucco building with steep arches and curved corners. It was unlike any other building in the city and unlike anything Bard and Vanderbilt would design again.
The Church of St. Austin was a newly-organized Catholic church, made up of about 1500 people who formerly attended St. Bridget’s, St. Ann’s, Ascension, St. Phillips, Holy Cross, St. Joseph’s, and Sacred Heart churches. The new church was named in honor of the late Archbishop Austin Dowling, who was the second archbishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul (succeeding John Ireland) from 1919 until his death in 1930.
It was the church that led to the renaming of 38th Ave. N to Dowling Ave. N, which was officially changed by the city council on November 12, 1937. (Note, Dowling Ave. was not named after the other famous Minnesota Dowling, Michael J. Dowling, the Minnesota politician, newspaper publisher, businessman, and spokesman for the physically handicapped, who as a boy lost three of his limbs to frostbite, and for whom Dowling Elementary School in South Minneapolis is named.)
Unfortunately, the streamlined St. Austin parish didn’t survive for long, cheaply built with stucco and wood trusses, rather than poured concrete, it wasn’t built to last. The church and parsonage were demolished in 1963, just 25 years after it was built, and five basic single-story homes were built in its place from 1964 to 1965 (pictured in Google streetview above).
St. Austin parish moved to a new brick building nearby, at the corner of Upton Ave. N and 41st Ave. N and eventually merged with St. Bridget parish. Their second building is now home to the New Oil Christian Center.

THE former Palace Hotel (pictured in 1948) was first licensed in December 1878. Specialising in Australian craft brews, the Sydney pub, located at the busy intersection of Flinders  Street and South Dowling  Road at Darlinghurst, is now known as The Taphouse. I enjoyed my visit to The Taphouse, it contradicted all what I expected of a craft beer pub. I equally enjoyed researching the history of this atmosphere filled pub. The unusual wedged shape double storey, brick building was established by Thomas and Bridget McNamee and it remained in their family for over 70 years before it was bought by Tooth and Company brewery in 1952. An Irishman, Thomas McNamee married Bridget Frost, the daughter of the owner of a Wollongong pub – the Cottage of Content – in 1865. Thomas arrived in Sydney in the early 1860s and after his marriage to Bridget the couple established various business ventures in and around Surry Hills. Read the history of the pub at The Time Gents website: (via The old Palace has been serving-up beer in Sydney for over 150 years: Local Taphouse, Darlinghurst)

Nearly everyone has that one asshole family member who drags down the family name with their ignorance, ineptitude, and generally being the worst your DNA has to offer. But while you might like to call your deadbeat anti-vaxxer cousin the "Hitler of shithead relatives," you should know that there once was an actual Hitler of shithead relatives -- and no, not that one, either. In a quirky twist of fate, the Universe saddled even that goose-stepping genocidal maniac with a slimy, opportunistic, clingy black sheep to ruin his Christmases: Adolf's "loathsome nephew," Willy Hitler.
William Patrick Hitler was born in Liverpool, Britishland to Bridget Dowling and Alois Hitler Jr., international scoundrel and half-brother of Adolf. In 1909, Bridget met Alois Jr., who was posing as a wealthy hotelier in Dublin (he was actually a waiter). The pair fell in love and eloped only months later. In 1911, Bridget gave birth to her only son, William, though his father preferred calling him Willy. It was a fun, happy household -- until Alois ran out of money, abandoned his family, and faked his own death to blitzkrieg through the single ladies of Germany. Eventually, this led to him marrying again and getting thrown in prison for bigamy.
Left without his father, William and his mother struggled back in England. Any job opportunities he could find seemed to vanish into thin air the moment people found out his last name. But there was one place where being a Hitler was your ticket to success: Nazi Germany. So William said goodbye to his mother, left his conscience in his old bedroom, and went over to Uncle Adolf's lair to mooch. Not wanting him to crash on the Eagle's Nest couch, his bestest best uncle eventually got him a gig at the German national bank. That was only his day job, though. By the 1930s, Willy Hitler had found his true calling: professional name-dropper.

Did Adolf Hitler's nephew serve in the US Navy during World War II?
The short answer is yes, he did. His name was William Patrick “Willy” Hitler, and he was born in 1911 in England, to Adolf’s half-brother Alois and an Irish woman named Bridget Dowling, who had met in Dublin while Alois was living there in 1909. Alois left the family in 1914 to go on a gambling tour of Europe and was unable to leave Germany after the outbreak of World War I, so William was raised by his mother. In 1933, William traveled to Germany to try and benefit from his uncle’s rise to power. Adolf got him a job at a bank in Berlin, and he later worked at the Opel car factory and as a car salesman. Unhappy with his lot in life, he bugged his uncle for better jobs, threatening to blackmail him by telling the papers that Hitler’s grandfather was Jewish.
William ultimately left Germany and went back to London, where he wrote an essay for Look magazine entitled “Why I Hate My Uncle.” He then visited the United States with his mother on a lecture tour set up by publisher William Randolph Hearst, and the two were stranded there when World War II broke out. In 1944, after getting special dispensation from President Roosevelt, William joined the Navy and became a hospital corpsman. He was wounded in action and was given a Purple Heart, and was discharged in 1947. After the war, he changed his name to Stuart-Houston and moved to Patchogue, a small town on Long Island, where he built a business out of his home analyzing blood samples for hospitals and laboratories.
William and his wife Phyllis had four sons, Alexander (whose middle name is Adolf), Louis, Howard and Brian. Howard died in a car accident in 1989, but his brothers still live on Long Island, and periodically reporters and documentary filmmakers show up to interview one of them about their famous uncle. None of them have had children, so the Hitler name will eventually die out. There was a rumor that the sons had deliberately decided not to have children so that Hitler’s bloodline would end, but Alexander said in an interview in 2002 that this isn’t true.

Photographer Travels Around The World To Capture The Incredible Beauty Of Red Hair, Photographs More Than 130 Redheads
While redheads have become synonymous with Ireland and Scotland, American photographer Brian Dowling who now lives in Berlin(Germany), photographed over 130 redheads from 20 different countries for his project “Redhead Beauty”.
Red hair is the rarest hair color in the world and is caused by a gene mutation know as MC1R which affects about 1% of the world population. This gene mutation can also affect a person’s tolerance to pain, sunlight, and their hairs’ ability to gray. Red hair will instead turn blonde or pure white when you age.
Brian started this portrait project which spanned three summers to show the real beauty of red hair and wanted to help break down stereotypes people often have of redheads with his photographs. His art book “Redhead Beauty” is available on Kickstarter.
