600 Followers Celebration

Y’all!! This is wild. I realized the other day that I started writing my first fic in my notes app on my phone on 4/11/23. I posted the first chapter of that fic in July last year! I am so grateful for each and every one of you. I get so emotional every time someone reads one of my fics. Thank you for being here and being amazing. And I’m so glad you all like fandom bingo (which is still open)!! 🧡🧡🧡

I wanted to do something fun to celebrate. There are two parts -- vote and ask! I'll tag every post for this celebration with #bte600.

I heartily appreciate Maintenance Request’s somno journey (👀👀👀) and love how you have explored/referenced elements of discovery, negotiation, and scene planning across your fics that include some kinky things. ✨

Are there any kinks that you headcanon for specific PPCU characters or BDSM archetypes that you think fit them well? Do you find that their interests and preferences as you write them vary depending on the story that you are telling and/or the details of who their partner/the reader (character) is?

As you noticed, I like exploring the negotiation and planning of kink, like... a lot. I feel like it's a really interesting way to deepen characterization and explore the developing relationship between characters. (how comfortable are they? do they trust each other? etc.)

So on the one hand, I'm the type of fanfic reader that can see a lot of possibilities for many individual characters. Like, a fic can convince me someone is more of a dom and another fic can convince me they're not. That's one of my favorite things about fic in general -- how much we can explore characterization and details like that and still have the characters be recognizably themselves.

On the other hand, I do tend to see them certain ways when I write them myself, but like you said I think I lean into it more or less depending on the fic and the relationship I've built/am building between the two people.

For example, I do think of Joel as someone who enjoys having control, but what that looks like in practice depends a lot on the fic, the plot, the situation they're in, their relationship... and I think pre- and post-outbreak Joel express that in different ways. So anything from like, actual dom!Joel with referenced kink negotiation and exploration (like the amazing relationship explored in @atticrissfinch's series that starts with Gimme What I Want - read the tags) to a Joel who is just a little bit more in charge in bed -- I think anything like that fits within his characterization in my mind. It depends on the story, the premise, the setting, the relationship, etc. And I think of Joel as someone who wants to/needs to let go of control sometimes, too, and that is also interesting to explore in fic.

For some of the other characters, here's just a few things I associate with them, but that might look different in different fics:

Din and Dave like to watch (in various ways)

Din is extremely into taste and touch, and that can express itself in various kinks depending on the story

Javi P is into overstimulation and exhibitionism

Marcus P is more of a dom to me, but that would look different in different fics, and always focused on his partner's pleasure

Frankie likes it both ways depending on what he needs/wants and what his partner needs/wants

Yeah so overall I think I tend to think more about the relationship and the characters and then the kinks, I guess? Does that make sense?

Slight spoilers for Maintenance Request under the cut (for anyone who hasn't read up to chapter 18) --

In Maintenance Request Joel is a little bit more in control, a little bit dominating in bed, but not a lot. It's more that he's driving things a lot of the time. (in my head these two explore various kinks more explicitly in the future)

and yes of course! Dieter headcanons coming right up (mostly related to that fic idea):

I think Dieter pretty obviously wears a lot of his emotions and thoughts on his sleeve, but it also sometimes feels like a defense mechanism. or like something he learned to do to combat the way he'd been taught. now he's living loud and maybe because it's how he is, maybe because he wasn't always allowed to, maybe because he's learned people will treat him with some amount of contempt anyway so why not be himself? (look at the show, not at the man behind it)

and if part of that emotional journey was being told not to show them as a child or being teased/ridiculed for it, I think showing them in bed would be a huge release for him.

part of creating real emotional connection for him would be showing someone his real self and I think despite how open he seems sometimes, he's not really sharing that much. he is an actor, after all, and he's somewhat playing the part people want to see, even when not on camera (when doing the parts of his job of being an actor that aren't acting). and that would be hard for him, to let someone see him. I sometimes think he thinks that his real self isn't someone people would like, so genuine care and interest throw him off.

I know a lot of us see him as more submissive than dominant to whatever extent and I can definitely see that (esp for that fic 👀)

this is a fun question! I had a lot to say apparently lol

So in terms of actually sitting down to write, I do a lot of it on my couch, tbh. I like to write in coffee shops so I try to do that sometimes, I like the vibe. I like background noise. Mild deadlines (without like a ton of pressure) motivate me which is why I like challenges, probably. They’re friendly but still something to work towards. I try to take breaks and let myself come back to things if it’s feeling like a slog. (Breaks are good for your brain!!)

I definitely prefer writing on my computer, not on my phone. When I wrote Maintenance Request I tried out Scrivener (since it was for NaNo) and I do like it, but the way Google docs sync across my devices is helpful for when I need to make quick changes or edits. Or write down a sudden thought.

I try to always have an outline before I start. For a oneshot that might be like… 3-5 bullet points. Basic plot outline and anything I know I want to include. Longer, depending on the length of the fic. Sometimes I’ll have specific scenes that I know I want to happen so I’ll list those.

I like to have a full outline, especially for a fic I know will be long, so I don’t lose sight of where it’s going. And so I can tell if all of the beats are there. But I’m also an almost-or-fully-finish-before-I-post person (MR was mostly done when I started posting, other than a couple of chapters near the end and the epilogue. But also thank god for @katareyoudrilling because without her as my beta it would not be what it is now). The outline doesn’t have to be fancy, it’s usually bullet points and incomplete sentences.

I think part of the reason I like to write this way is because I like to empty my brain of all of my ideas for a fic to help me brainstorm, and that becomes the outline. It also helps me not worry if I’m forgetting any ideas. And seeing it all laid out helps me find gaps or like places where I need to add things. I also skip around when actually writing within the outline — I don’t just go in order.

Mild spoilers for Maintenance Request under the cut (but not past where you’ve read, just for anyone else reading this).

For Maintenance Request I had an extensive outline — almost everything that is still in it up to chapter 16ish was in the outline, just not necessarily in the original order. (I just went back and looked, the outline is 6 pages 👀.) I knew I wanted the beginning scenes where they’re at odds, and the scene outside the building when she kisses Joel was actually the first scene I thought of for the fic. Some of it developed as I was writing (like the date and what’s coming this Friday 👀) and a lot of the outline was vague, so there’s still the element of surprise lol. And Joel likes to do what he wants. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have a soft spot for fics that explore cultural things within the SGA universe, so here's a couple of those:

John always gets a little thrill when he sees Rodney sign at him across the room, casually dissing people literally standing next to him and John is the only one who knows.

Don't ask don't tell is repealed and all of Atlantis tries to find their footing, except for John and Rodney, who just try to find each other.

Note: I think the structure of this fic is beautifully done.

and this fic is both beautiful and emotionally devastating. I love it and I cried a lot the first time I read it. It's more of a character study of Rodney and you'll see why if you read it. I can give you more extensive tags than the author did if you want them. I think about this fic like once a year at least. The second, shorter installment in the series is also amazing.

how do you come up with your ideas for these genuinely fun community engagements? the fandom bingo, the words behind the friend gift exchange (the passing notes series), the FIC TRACKER OMG i feel like a little hobbit sometimes with my face up against the door and peaking out through the mail slot as i shove my dirty smut fics through the hole. i wanna run in the sun with you! how can I be a better fandom friend?

You do so much for everyone here, but what do you like to do? Who is your favorite Pedro boy to write for and/or read about?

ok first of all I think you are an amazing fandom friend. you're so encouraging to other writers! I felt really welcomed by you from the beginning. and your fics are amazing. 🧡

second, I'm really glad people think they're fun. that's like the best part, probably.

so you mentioned bingo and the notes and the fic tracker. lol so the last one was just me being a data nerd and wanting to know how many words of fanfic I read. like, people always post at the end of the year about how many books they read but I never knew how much fanfic I read (other than it was a lot). and then people liked it so I just made a blank version of the spreadsheet available. part of it is to reblog more fic but I got that idea from @katareyoudrilling's year of asks and how much fun it is when we engage with each other on here.

for bingo, I think that's me being a teacher. 😂 let me give the fandom ~an activity~ lol (it's like something I would do in class to make people talk to each other). and it seemed like a good way to get people to interact more? I also love making things in Canva, it satisfies my art/crafty itch.

for the notes, I am a sucker for a gift exchange. like, I can very easily over commit myself and I'm trying not to be that way about writing, so it stays fun and not like a chore. but as soon as I saw the challenge I could feel myself getting carried away -- I just tried to limit the length of what I wrote. part of it is that they gave us so much lead time so my brain could just be like "wait here's another idea" and then we ended up with 12. I'm making myself be more chill right now in exchange (which is why we're voting on one fic for this celebration instead of me writing more).

but if you meant inspiration for the notes, some of them came to me easily, but some I pondered more. generally they were based on conversations I'd had with each person.

I guess overall I'm just trying to be a more interactive fan? this is the first time in a loooong time that I'm like an active participant in a fandom and it's been really fun. so my hope would be that everyone can have fun.

2. what do you like to do? Who is your favorite Pedro boy to write for and/or read about?

I've noticed that as I write more I have less time to read (of course) which I'm still balancing. I've been reading fic for like... forever. decades. so I do try to keep reading, because obviously I enjoy it. there are a bunch on my tbr (aka open tabs on my phone) and I'm trying to catch up. I should have more time because work is slowing down soon.

current favorite to write about: Joel (lol is it obvious) with Din as a growing close second, but Frankie, too (I had a new Joel idea last night and I need it to chill out because I have some challenges to work on)

current favorite to read about: I'll always read a Joel or Din fic, but I've been enjoying Marcus Moreno? and Dieter
