Dr. Reames, a simple question from someone interested in history but who is not part of the academic world: in order to study Alexander the Great and Ancient Greece in general, how much Ancient Greek does one have to learn? Would you need to learn Demotic Greek or the many other dialects, such as the one from Macedonia? As in, you’d need to learn one or more versions of Ancient Greek?

How Much Greek Do I Need to Read about Alexander?

It depends on how far you want to go…what’s your end-goal?

If you’ve no desire to make it a profession, the good news is you need very little Greek.

Most ancient Greek and Latin texts are available in translation in the major languages of (European) Classical studies: English, French, German, Italian. Now, if you want them in Polish, or Japanese, or Bengali, you’ll have more of an issue. But the Loeb Classical Library (and LOEB ONLINE) has English translations of virtually all extant (still existing) Greek and Latin sources, and if you’ve got access to a (larger) college library, they probably have them, even if you have to ask them to get things out of storage. Latin is red (PA6156); Greek is green (PA3612). Budé is the French version of Loeb, btw.

Loeb texts also have Greek and Latin on the facing page, but I mention them because they’ve got translations of (almost) everything. One can find cheaper versions without the Greek/Latin from Penguin, Oxford, et al. But those don’t have, say, Aelian, or Athenaeus, or the obscure texts of Plutarch’s Moralia. Loeb does. That said, the Alexander histories (Arrian, Curtius, Plutarch, Diodoros, and Justin) are all available in relatively cheap translations. Much earlier, in answer to a different ask, I listed our main sources on Alexander, extant and lost. It’s a longer read, but perhaps of interest.

So, no, you don’t need Greek. But, if you’re at least moderately serious about reading beyond pop history, you will want to learn a few Greek words to better “get” Greek sensibilities. Say, timē (τιμή), which means honor/public standing/esteem, but has all these attendant connotations. If you start reading the Serious Stuff (articles and academic books), authors will throw these around so it’s useful to know them, as they tend to carry an entire freight of meaning we don’t want to explain every time we use them. These are words I make my students learn in my intro to Greek History class (2510), so there aren’t many. (Undergrads put up with only so much, ha.) For Alexander, it’s also useful to know the Greek names of some units, such as the Somatophylakes (the royal Bodyguard of 7), or the Hypaspists (the specialist hoplite phalanx, not the same as the Foot Companions), or even the name of the long pike (sarissa). But you can make do quite well with a vocab of maybe 30± Greek terms.

It's only if you want to pursue research at the advanced (graduate) level that you’d need Greek. Even then, it’s mostly Attic Greek. The only time you’d need dialects is for quite specific study and/or epigraphy (inscriptions). Epigraphers are language specialists. Most of us, even the “pros,” don’t work at that level. But yes, if you’re getting into extensive examinations of passages, it’s good to understand the language for yourself, not have to trust a translation. Translations are, by definition, interpretations.

I hope that encourages some folks to embark on reading the original (primary) sources. Of more import for these is to understand HISTORIOGRAPHY. Even those who can read the Greek, but lack historiographic training, tend to take stuff at face-value when they shouldn’t.

Go HERE for a discussion of historiography (with regard to Alexander). Again, it’s part of a specific ask, but I explain why we need to know something about the historians who are writing our texts, in order to understand those texts. It’s another longer read, but essential.

Some Useful Online Sources to Bookmark:

Perseus (at Tufts.edu): clunky as hell because it’s old (in internet years), but indispensable. English/Greek/Latin/other texts in translation and original language, plus all sorts of other tools, including an image bank. Pitfall: these are translations outside copyright, so old and sometimes problematic. Still, it’s free, and so-so much stuff here. Every person dealing with the ancient Med world has this one on speed-dial. (You can find other online sources with various texts, but Perseus has, again, almost everything; it’s the online Loeb.)

Stoa Org Static: a version of the original where you don’t have to sign in. Takes you to various super-helpful pages, including the Online Suda (a Byzantine encyclopedia you can search: look up “Hephaistion” there. *grin*) Bunch of other helpful links.

Wiki Digital Classicist hypertext list of topics ranging from the Beasley Library (of pottery) to the Coptic Gnostic Library and various online journals. Just click around, see what’s there.

Topos Text: clickable map of places which includes all references to them in ancient sources. So if, say, you want to know where X places is, mentioned in Arrian, you can find it on the map.

PHI Searchable Greek Inscriptions: I have used the tar out of this. It’s much easier than Inscriptiones Graecae, and comes with English translations.

More Online Resources: more links. This is just one of various collections out there.

Again, ALL this stuff is free. Even when you may have to pay (like Loeb Online), the amount of material you can now lay hands on even without a uni library is fantastic.

JSTOR: requires a subscription, but, if you’re a college student or can get access via a uni library, you can look up material for free. Problem: JSTOR has different subscription packages, and only the really big Class-A Research schools have large holdings for Classics. I’m regularly foiled in things I need, as my library is smaller. I use ILL (Interlibrary Loan) a lot. If you can’t get what you want via your school JSTOR or ILL, sometimes you can purchase a solo copy of an article via JSTOR Google Scholar. But (hint) always check the journal’s website itself. It might be cheaper there! (The Ancient History Bulletin, for instance, is super-cheap; check their archives. Karanos [Macedonia only] is FREE.) Same thing sometimes with books. Certain publishers have rental options, Open Access, etc.

Also Academia.edu first: Your savior…if the author is a member, and has uploaded the paper you want. We frequently face restrictions on what we’re allowed to upload, and when. Yet we may list an article we can’t yet release publicly. That doesn’t mean we won’t send it to you privately via email if you message us and ask nicely. 😊 Especially if you’re not providing an entire wishlist, or asking for a book for free. It depends on the person, and whether they have a PDF.

Why didn’t I realise this before?

We’ve seen the Krakoan language the island speaks before!

Not the conlang Doug created that everyone uses, that was new for HoX/PoX, but the actual base language of Krakoa that only Krakoa and Doug can speak.

It uses the same font as Limbo demon’s use, which is also the first time we ever saw Doug swear, albeit in a language that needs a key to decode back in New Mutants volume 3.

So when we see Krakoa say things like

We now know tha Krakoa is actually yelling “GIBBERISH!” to Doug.

And that

I just love the fact that Krakoa keeps shouting “GIBBERISH!” at the world’s greatest omniglot, and he gets it! :D

Hi I have been informed that the tags are a reference to the opera in that image but because I love fun facts I do want to say!! Fluttershy actually does know (at the very least on a reading level) latin!! It's called Old Ponish in show and it's more fanon than canon that it's Latin, but it's treated as an equivalent!! @terrifyingdream is the blog I use for wips, occasional writing, headcanons and other similar projects. Recently I've been pretty inactive on that, but always feel free to ask me about my writing or send headcanons on there.

@day-nightmaring is the blog where I mostly talk about my life. They're completely random and consist of ramblings, vents, jokes and my current playthroughs, which are mostly about TOTK.

@little-wormguy is the blog I use the least. Major unreality warning for that one.

multiple nice things happened to me lately and i am noting them here because of [primal screech]

my partner, who is the best all time btw, got me a copy of my undergrad adviser's translation of a late medieval italian chronicle, which is delightful to me because a) it's very fun to revisit the latin that i worked on for a bit and see what final translation decisions were made and b) i am named briefly in the acknowledgments, hurrah, my impact,

my coworker bought me a cake today. it is a silly joke cake in honor of my having won a stupid fake quarterly award at my job but it was very nice of her and also she made a point to get me the funfetti one because she's supportive of my crusade for pillsbury to lose that trademark. also she let me explain the history of the manicule & it was so fun for me, I Love Medieval European Punctuation

i found out about dobbs because my brother texted me to say that he hoped i was OK, which was like. obviously the news is unremittingly awful, if unsurprising. but i felt genuinely supported & stuff, it's really rare for my brother to reach out first. so i appreciated it a lot

after a couple weeks of interruption due to travel & work, we had our usually scheduled once a week video call with my friend who lives far away, and this time we got to try tea together. (we mailed him a box of tea & then we had the same one on video call.) the tea was gross imho but it was fun to do An Activity. when we were in college we used to hang out on his solar system rug and do nothing near each other & i miss that so much but shared activities are also fun

on friday i am going to do a tabletop roleplaying program at the library with some kids, two people are signed up (not terrible!). i get to pretend to be Conan the Librarian and then give them little chocolate coins & cards to the "adventurer's library" with little dragons on them at the end of the program, i'm really excited for it

i got to see my friend! on saturday i got to see my friend for the first time in a long time & i am not trying to be weird but have you ever like, hugged your friends? it fucking rules

my basil plant is going strong and so is the rosemary! somehow the thyme plant has stuck with it too. i love plants i love herbs i love growing things i saw a little toad hopping by my potted plants the other day it was pure joy

I'll try to stay consistent with my spoiler tagging (and use more spoiler tags in general) so you hopefully don't get spoiled, and I apologize for the confusion caused by this fairly convoluted system!!

Anyways I'm gonna give you more of lifestory dump now because things have changed and idk it's time to update you👀

First of all, I passed last year. Not with the best grades, but I passed. Meaning I'm in eleventh grade finally and I MUCH prefer it over whatever that was the last few years.

Getting to choose what subjects you wanns focus on and what subjects yoy just wanna dump in the trash (bye bye latin) is a great concept

My focus is on English, German and chemistry :)

I'm a lot more open and, not like the last few years, I don't try to not be seen or not exist anymore. In fact, I try to give myself a presence and just exist in other people's minds. I often casually talk with people I've never spoken to before and it's not weird or forced. I also made some new... friends? Probably wouldn't go that far yet but we're getting there for sure.

Yesterday, I met in the library with some friends so they can study for their biology exam tomorrow and I can get some books on one of the topics for my gfs

Btw, I got the best topics for my gfs's

In psychology I got schizophrenia and did, two things I've been interested in for years

I history I got something with Japan lol

And in English I got hamilton and I get to compare the musical to the real world history

My teachers are great for the most part and I haven't skipped class once yet and am not planning to do so either

I'm among the people with the most additional classes and on Wednesday, I'll get to go to the best university for psychology nearby and even get to attend one psychology and one jura lesson

My grades have gotten better. They're not the best yet, but I don't have to fear about passing anymore

Last Monday, we started a new topic in German class and our teacher made us play out a theatre script. We got to film each other. I decided to get revenge and wrote a script myself, following the same topic to ask him to play it for us. He did :)

He even said it was a prime example of that kind of text and that it was quite fitting for the topic pf that specific lesson. We were allowed to film him and he decided to make the text I wrote public to everyone in class

He actually puts effort into teaching and always gives us some great feedback for our homework and texts. I asked him if I could send him a poem I've written last year, simply because I want to know what I can do better. It's not about our current topic at all, but he still told me to go for it and even said on Friday that I will get feedback soon

And I'll go to London with the seminar course in February and might even get to see the Hamilton musical with some people :)

I still have depression and getting up everyday is an impossible seeming task... But I do it anyway and greet my peers. I don't expect them to say good morning back, but when they do, I do, in fact, have a good morning

What book is Encanto based off of??

I'm not sure "based off" is the most accurate term - it's clearly inspired by A Hundred Years Of Solitude (Cien Años de Soledad) by Gabriel García Márquez, a tremendously important latin american (colombian!!) author.

I haven't finished reading the book yet, and there are certain things people mention (like the yellow butterflies) that I can't say anything about, but from the start of the movie the influences are clear. Just like Alma and her husband lead their people across the jungle to escape violence and found a new village to live in, Úrsula and José Arcadio Buendía lead their people through the jungle to found Macondo. When José Arcadio falls into insanity, Úrsula takes her rightful place as the matriarch of her family, which is composed of multiple children and grandchildren. Both stories tell the tale of a family through the generations and both are examples of magical realism, a literary genre native to Latin América (of course, Encanto is a disneyfied version while Cien Años is the literal parent text of the genre, so as much as I love Encanto they don't really compare).

Now, there are clear parallels and more similarities than I just mentioned but fundamentally they are very different stories. Encanto is very character-driven while Cien Años is much more political and poetic. Cien Años also reads like a fever dream you had while high on wisdom tooth meds. It has everything: child abuse? Got it. Incest? Got it. Sexual slavery? Got it. Pedophilia? Got it. The closest thing we have to a "main character" married a 9 years old, got her pregnant and killed her, and then went all to have 17 more children during his revolutionary adventures leading the guerrilla in the jungle (all of them named after him). Two of his siblings are fucking. I think his brother tried to kill him? It all blends together into an amorphous mess of insanity and mindless abstraction. One scene two characters are enemies and the next they are childhood friends. Úrsula kept her husband tied to a tree for several decades i think. José Arcadio (the first)'s best friend came back from the dead with magical dentures. I think?? I don't know! I don't know what the fuck this book is about but i'm loving it, it's weird and fucked up and maybe I just need to be more Intellectual to understand the symbolism. It IS romantic and poetic, i just wish i knew what the fuck is going on. After a while you give up on understanding and go along with the ride. I appreciate the anti-imperialist message. Granted i haven't read it in a while so i probably need to refreshen my memory.

It's a HUGE latin american classic, a must-read according to my family, everyone loves it for some fucking reason.

Btw here's the Buendía family tree. The book follows the story of all of them until (spoilers) the baby gets eaten by ants.
