Java making a contact book app how to#
Java making a contact book app update#
Java making a contact book app code#
Java making a contact book app series#
Now, I hope you’ll have fun! Start with Part 1: Scene Builder. Then go through the tutorial to understand the code.
Java making a contact book app code#
fast track: Import the source code for a tutorial part into your IDE (it’s an Eclipse project, but you could use other IDEs like NetBeans with slight modifications). Ionic Frameworks app development platform builds amazing cross-platform mobile, web, and desktop apps all with one shared code base and open-web standards.learn-a-lot track: Create your own JavaFX project from the ground up.
Java making a contact book app series#
This is quite a lot! So, after you you’ve completed this tutorial series you should be ready to build sophisticated applications with JavaFX. It has everything in order to achieve your request.
Java making a contact book app update#
Deploying a JavaFX application as a native package For a simple contact book where you can add, delete, rename and update your contacts in java application with also a GUI interface take a look at this ready cooked code from this website.
Saving the last opened file path in user preferences.
Create a custom popup dialog to edit persons.
Using TableView and reacting to selection changes in the table.
Using ObservableLists for automatically updating the user interface.
Structuring an application with the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern.
Using Scene Builder to design the user interface.
This is how the final application will look like: This programm was created for the second semester class Object-oriented Programming and is one of a few such simple java programms neccessary to pass the class Description of project A Java console application that manages an address book where the contacts are saved within an archive. This tutorial walks you through designing, programming and deploying an address application. So I decided to rewrite the JavaFX 2 tutorial for JavaFX 8 (read about what changed in Update to JavaFX 8 - What’s New). Many people all over the world have been reading the tutorial and gave very positive feedback.
Explains the decisions made at each step, gives advice and examples of good practices vs.Back in 2012 I wrote a very detailed JavaFX 2 tutorial series for my students.
Guides the reader through the entire process of developing a high-quality Java ME application.
Based on and geared towards real-life Java ME scenarios.
It uses a single entity class, Contact, that uses the Java API. The book assumes that the reader is already familiar with Java ME and Java applications in general. Hi, I'm creating a Java Swing application that lets the user enter the usual details one would expect in an address book then click the save button. The address-book example application is a simple web application that stores contact data. As this unfolds, the decisions and reasoning behind the code are also presented. From there, the book presents, explains, and helps you to implement all the essential aspects of Java ME development, from the user interface to client-server communication. Unlike other Java ME books out there, which only teach the reader the basics of Java ME by way of a few simple examples, this book presents a broader, eagle-eye picture of a complete Java ME application and what writing one involves.
Java making a contact book app how to#
You'll cover what Java ME is and how it compares to other mobile software platforms, how to properly design and structure Java ME applications, how to think like an experienced Java ME developer, what common problems and pitfalls you may run into, how to optimize your code, and many other key topics. Java ME is the largest mobile software platform in the world, supported by over 80% of all phones. Pro Java ME Apps gives you, the developer, the know-how required for writing sophisticated Java ME applications and for taking advantage of this huge potential market.

Future Diary - the 13th Diary Owner, Q2 Translation Update
Future Diary the 13th Diary Owner Q2 Translation Update
It’s been a while hasn’t it? I was supposed to update 3 months ago for the Q4 update. I guess I’ll break down everything that’s important. I can’t use a TL;DR, but the subtitles should work as your TL;DR.
Future Diary - The 13th Diary Owner RE:WRITE’s Translation is Being Worked on Simultaneously!
For those unaware, 2 games were published for Future Diary. The first came out while the manga was still going on. The second game released out of the anime’s popularity. This game is a “re-release” of the first adding in:
A new memory (each chapter is a “memory”)
Changes to the UI. Here’s one such example:
Tumblr media
Left: first game; right: second game.
Fixes to difficulty
There are more tutorial cutscenes to explain mechanics.
Yuno’s insanity was too hard to balance in the original game, so they added in more ways to lower it (for Yunoteru fans this means more lovey-dovey scenes).
This is what the other translator told me, so I don’t know if this is true.
Voice Actors (everything is voiced except the current protagonist)
The Addition of Subtitles
With VAs being added in, some lines contain no text, but still have a voice line. So our solution will be to add in subtitles. There is one small problem with this technique, it’s very difficult to implement on a PSP. I won’t go into details, but it requires careful management of multiple things at once to make sure the PSP doesn’t crash.
Our Change in Translation
Originally, our translation was half machine translation and someone studying Japanese checking over the MTL. Our translation perspective has changed, and so has our recruiting process.
Translation is as much of an art form as writing the piece itself, and by translating literally (word for word) into English, we ruin both pieces of art. Therefore, I’ve been revising my translation ability by reading books on translation theory and changing our recruiting process. If you’d like to help translate, great! However, you’ll need to have an N2+ level and be competent in Japanese-English translation theory.
Now, due to this change in translation perspective, it makes the overall translation slower. If you really want to play the game translated with edited MTL, there’s plenty of software you can use, but we won’t do this for your final experience.
How We’ll be Releasing the Patches
Once we get to a stable release for both games (whether incomplete or complete), we’ll release a program that will overwrite your ISO. We won’t be releasing a patch because a patch would be limiting. What we want to do with this program is give you a couple options when “translating” your ISO:
Decide whether or not you’d prefer to have Japanese suffixes on (i.e. -san).
Decide whether you’d prefer the names to be in Japanese orientation (i.e. Gasai Yuno) or English orientation (i.e. Yuno Gasai).
Decide whether you’d prefer subtitles to be on or off.
In case you're a little skeptical of downloading a program, we'll be publishing it on GitHub, so you don't have to worry.
A New Programmer Has Joined Us!
Now that I (Sermeno) am in college, I have a roommate, who luckily has programming experience in ASM! He offered his help to our project, so please welcome Avodkada!
Why Our Update Took so Long
I started college this semester, and getting used to the environment has taken a while. I now seem to have a better grasp on things, so finding free time should be less difficult.
Changing our translation philosophy caused me to have to revise the way I’ve been studying Japanese.
Working on the subtitles is really difficult simply because of how much we have to manage and how they work behind the scenes.
Hopefully in our Q2 update, we’ll have more we can show all of you.
Sincerely, The New Future Diary Alliance

Last Monday of the Week: 2021-03-01
First Monday of the Month. My boss just quit at work which means I'm now the only formally trained engineer left who has any particular specialization in embedded systems. This week is going to be a doozy.
I also wrote a Very Long set of media updates because I’ve been consuming some stuff that makes me think a lot. Never a good sign.
Listening: I spent all of Saturday playing Minecraft after talking with some friends about it during the week on IRC. Practicing what I preach with regards to my Large Biome Supermacy policy, which does involve a lot of walking. Hence, I started catching up on The Adventure Zone: Graduation again, I'm like ten episodes behind.
https://maximumfun.org/episodes/adventure-zone/the-adventure-zone-graduation-ep-32-by-a-haircut/
I don't really enjoy Travis' DM'ing style. It's very loose and he has a tendency to let players run wild without much structure which is a tricky thing to handle. He does a lot of worldbuilding and character design but doesn't seem to plan much in the way of arcs. That pays off sometimes (returning to the school to realize they broke a promise they made a few sessions earlier and had to deal with consequences, for example) and when it does, it’s really good, but it's finnicky. I know DM's who can do that, but, well, actually I know One Single DM who can do that well and she's absurdly smart.
Reading: Still on Worm, I just got past chapter 8 or so now. It lives in my phone browser so I've mostly been reading it whenever I get some spare time, which is a good sign. If a book doesn't grab me I need to really settle down in a quiet space to avoid getting distracted, but I can read Worm while someone else is on the phone in the same room.
It is a story with a lot of very well-conveyed feelings and events. It's very easy to imagine yourself in it. Characters actually act like they care about what they're doing, I feel like writing this took a lot of care to keep everyone on model.
There's also a certain care given to the superpowers that you'd usually only see in forum posts arguing about an actual superhero story. Everyone always likes to argue about how far you can push a superpower: can you use teleporting to fly? What prevents a speedster from catching fire in the air? Where does the energy for a  pyrokinetic ability come from? Worm takes these and runs with them as a way to make absolutely any fight become a series of gambits relying on whether a power can or cannot be used to perform some high-stakes trick.
The world certainly has some underpinning contrivances to explain why no one gets killed very often but I've always considered nitpicking the base contrivances of a setting silly, because that's precisely what they are: contrived, in order to allow the rest of the story to flow from there. Like arguing about Omega’s abilities in the famous thought experi-*I am dragged off stage by the ratblr police for making a by now extremely stale joke*
Watching: I came and edited this section in like an hour before this posts because I keep on forgetting to put it in. I don’t really like watching TV and with my parents stuck at home in Pandemic Times it’s how they pass the time.
I did finish S3 of the Good Place. It’s very funny. I’m glad I’m watching it and I’m going to have to go find S4 because ZA Netflix doesn’t have it for whatever reason. It feels a little like it was written by Phillip Pullman if Phillip Pullman was a comedy TV writer.
I also really enjoyed the PBS Spacetime video about how time causes gravity. Love when an explanation of concepts is good enough that you drawn the conclusion on your own.
youtube
Playing: Visual Novel Hell plus Minecraft.
I spent approximately seven hours in Minecraft over two days. I tend to hop in and out of games for 1-2 hours at a time but there's a handful that can suck me in for an entire day. Minecraft, Warframe, Horizon Zero Dawn, Night in the Woods. Bastion, to a lesser extent. I end up avoiding them because I don't like loosing entire days, but I wasn't really planning on doing anything this weekend anyways.
Minecraft was mostly a long-ass trek to find a saddle, because as previously mentioned, I enjoy playing it with Large Biomes for the sense of scale.
I also completed Act 3 of Psycholonials and Eliza.
Psycholonials is odd. It is doing the thing that Hussie does where it dances around what's ostensibly the story to carry out the actual story. You get used to the trope after your first encounter but it still makes you wonder when the other shoe will drop, and of course, there's no reason it ever has to. The story may remain in suspended animation behind the every growing mess of narrative red tape tying the B-plot together.
Stories about Social Media have no well established norms. I think I might pick up Feed by M. T. Anderson and also perhaps Hank Green's books sometime. See what context they set that in.
Eliza is frustrating to me. It's a game for programmers, by programmers, about programmers. I'm friends with a lot of Capital P Programmers, the types who go to university and get sniped for developer positions at Seattle or Silicon Valley tech companies and who make great and terrible things and then warn you about the deep problems that underpin the slowly rolling ball of venture capital and bloated technology that is the tech industry. But at the same time, it makes me feel like I've burnt out on that conceptually before I even went in. It’s a whole other world that I’m familiar with but very distant from. In fact, that’s kinda how I feel about Psycholonials too. I’m familiar with the social media rat race but I also don’t go there. Parallels!
My cousins (who are halfway to Capital P Programmers, only so much you can do halfway around the world from silicon valley) warned me not to go into CS, because it would bore me, and that's a non-trivial part of why I'm in Engineering. They gave the same advice about Biology and Physics, without that I may have ended up in Microbiology. it’s not my domain, but because of how Engineering is going, you end up a lot closer to programmers than you think. I found out the other day that most of the software developers on my team have no formal tertiary qualifications, which is accepted in CS but of course, right out when it comes to engineering. It’s a whole other world that I kinda expected to skip around. I might go into this another time, since this post is already getting long.
Making: I haven’t done any engineering scicomm posts on here in a while so I started a few blank drafts and finally got one off the ground. With some luck I’ll have that ready this week. What’s it about? Not saying! It might change!
I’ve been doing layout for a custom keyboard, I need to call a laser cutting place and find out what their kerf requirements are so I can adjust the path accordingly. Wouldn’t do to burn a couple hundred rand on an oversized part, I’m paying for this, not my employer like the other times I’ve done laser cutting, so I’m probably not going to spring for getting one of their designers to check my design. At some point I should CAD up a chassis, but at the same time I might just buy some wood and go ham with a router once I get the plates cut.
Tumblr media
Computers Slot: I got WeeChat set up properly on my desktop, which technically was just a matter of getting my SSH keys moved over. It’s taking me forever to move in to Cinnabar, in part because Stibnite lost her boot partition and I haven’t bothered to fix it.
So here’s a pitch for WeeChat as a good quality Terminal UI IRC Client. Many of my closest friends live there and it has a good set of tools to help me keep in touch.
Tumblr media
WeeChat is very configurable but with perfectly sane defaults, I didn’t configure it for years. The UI is smarter and less arcane than something like irssi, and if you enable mouse support it can be downright modern. Running it remotely like this limits some features but as long as you don’t mind jumping through a few hoops to do filesharing, IRC is really great like this.
One of the big ones is the ability to do that double-pane thing, I can keep an eye on two channels at once (really as many as I can cram on my screen, but usually two) which is great when you want to browse channels while talking in your home channel.
It also has a good array of remote access tools, from what I’m running up there, just weechat running on my server inside tmux connected over mosh for low-latency SSH, to weechat-relay, a relay protocol built in to weechat. At the moment relay only supports android phones and the glowingbear web client, but I’ve never really looked around since both of those cover all my needs. Easily one of the best ways to get IRC on a modern mobile device, barring maybe IRCCloud.

Keeping Track of Fanfics (99 % Offline) and How to Organise Them Neatly
Without a doubt, fanfiction has become an undeniably popular phenomenon in modern pop-culture. Every day thousands of avid writers provide us with their entertaining adventures, allowing us to interact with like-minded fans and friends and secretly indulge in collective swooning. ヽ( ⌒o⌒)人(⌒-⌒ )ノ
But then again, the sheer abundance of stories makes it hard to not be confused at times. Have I read that fic before? Did I like it??? Had there been an update that I might have missed? Where the heck did I stop reading? Damn, that story has been deleted; I wished I had saved it! ( ಥ ʖ̯ ಥ)
Especially in devastating times as this, with the corona virus running rampant on the whole globe, forcing millions of people into quarantine at home, the fear of the internet collapsing is palpable everywhere. In China, readers didn't/still do have no access to archiveofourown.com anymore.  (o_O) !
But fear not, here's a great solution for the problem. – The FREE offline programme "Calibre". Some of you might have heard of it already and shy away from its usage as it seems confusing and cumbersome at first glance. (•ิ_•ิ) ?
In this tutorial, however, I will show you that, once you've gotten through the necessary set-up (which I will guide you through step-by-step) it will be well worth the effort and you're going to love “Calibre” forever for saving your fanfiction treasures and allows you your daily fix of smutty goodness, even if being online is no longer an option.  (๑˃ᴗ˂)
So, here we go:
First, you need to download "Calibre" (either the regular or portable version):
https://calibre-ebook.com/download
and install it.
ヘ( ̄ω ̄ヘ)
Tumblr media
Follow the instruction and select your device (output format is usually .epub but than can be changed to pretty much every other common format.) and click on “Finish”. If you’re not sure which device you use (or use more than one), simply stick to “Generic”.
An interface will appear:
You need to click on the three dots on the right (see arrow). An additional row of plugins will open which holds the button “Preferences”. Click that.
Tumblr media
Scroll down to “Advanced” and select “Plugins”, “Get New Plugins”.
Tumblr media
In the list of new plugins chose “FanFicFare” and install it (Ignore the warning.). As for the toolbars - best go with the pre-sets.
Tumblr media
You can pick as many plugins as you like; “EpubMerge”, “Find Duplicates” and “EpubSplit” are useful additions, but see for yourself. Whenever “Calibre” asks you to close and re-open the program, do so (might happen a couple of times).
Next, go back to “Preferences” (remember the three dots on the right of the toolbar), find “Toolbars and Menus” and choose the main toolbar.
Tumblr media
You can now pick the buttons you want to show up in your main toolbar, then click “Apply”. My toolbar looks something like this:
Tumblr media
If you can't see all of your plugins, click on the three dots on the right, just as before. An additional row of plugins appears underneath.
Now we’re going to add the columns that are individually important to you and which will give you the information you need in order to pick the right book for your reading session.
Go to “Preferences”, “Add your columns”.
First tick and un-tick the pre-set columns that you want to keep or get rid of.
__φ(。。)
Tumblr media
Then, click the green “+”-button on the right. An new window pops up that allows you to create new categories. Here's an example:
Tumblr media
In my case I've picked a column that can be answered with a yes/no, but of course you also could opt for a text version instead (which is helpful when you want to sort stuff by pairing). Just make sure the lookup name is written in small letters (otherwise you'll get an error message) while for the column name you can write whatever you wish. When you're done, click "Apply".
Repeat the process as often as desired, here's my columns to give you some ideas:
ID
(like 008, so I can give individual IDs to my books which makes finding them easier.)
Title
(No big brainer here – once you download a fanfic, this will be filled in automatically.)
Read?
(Again, pretty self-explanatory, easy to answer with the yes/no option)
Rating
(Now that is probably the most important column since it gives me an idea whether that fic is worth a re-read, or not. You can chose the ★★★★★-rating system in your personalised columns)
Time
(This column is only necessary if you know if you're a fast reader or not. We only need this column if you intend to add “Pages” as well:)
Pages
(That feature comes in handy when you're reading on another device like your mobile phone or tablet. Some devices show either the number of pages or the estimated reading time. In case it shows only the number of pages (just for example's sake, let's pretend you need one minute for reading one page which leaves you with e. g. 900 pages. Go to this site to break it down to hours and minutes:
https://www.unitjuggler.com/convert-time-from-min-to-h.html
900 minutes/pages leaves you with a total of roughly 15hr of reading time. You might want to note that down in your Calibre columns in order to have a vague idea if you're in for a lazy half-an-hour-read or better get settled for a marathon.)
Pairing?
(Does what it says on the tin – If you have more than one fav pairing in the same fandom it is useful to be able to sort by pairing for easy selection when you're in the mood for certain protagonists without wanting to scroll through your library forever. Btw, I recommend to use different libraries for each fandom. (Click the arrow on the right of the button "Calibre Library", "Switch/Create Library" and follow the instructions)
NSFW?
(Personally, a really important column for me. 'nough said. (^_<)〜☆ )
Okay, so now that we got the most important stuff done, let's finally download a fanfic!!! Leave Calibre as it is, open the internet and go to your site and fic of choice. Select the according url in your browser, copy it, switch back to Calibre.
Click on the arrow button on the right side of your plug in fanficfare, "Download from URL", the download url is automatically added, then press OK.
Tumblr media
Now one of these two things can happen:
If you're lucky, on your bottom right corner, there's a pop up, letting you know that your FanficFare download is complete. All you have to do is press "Yes" and ét voila – you've imported your first fanfic!
All you need to do now is to double click on the title and start reading (I recommend to use E-book viewer). Enjoy !
However, if you're not lucky, you might get messages like how the sites want you to enter your username and password or that it's adult content blah blah blah, yadda, yadda, yadda. Having to fill in the information for every single fanfic is annoying, time-consuming and, most of all, incredibly annoying!
凸( ̄ヘ ̄)
Tumblr media
Hence, here's the work-around:
Click on the arrow right to your plugin "FanFicFare" in the tool bar, find “Configure FanfFicFare”.
Tumblr media
Go to the tab that says "personal.ini", then "edit personal.ini" Scroll down in the small pop-up until you can see this pre-set:
Tumblr media
Edit in all the sites you're usually browsing for fanfiction. Always make sure that the letters of the sitename are blue, not red. If you want to make sure you aren't bothered with any verification pop-ups and such, double-check to work all of these in:
[Your fanfiction page like hp.adultfanfiction.org]
#username:YourPenname
#password:YourPassword
## default is false
#collect_series: true
#is_adult:true
#fail_on_password: false
That should do the trick and you can now easily keep track and enjoy your fics!
☆*:.。.o(≧▽≦)o.。.:*☆
Bonus:
When you're done reading you might want to fill in some information for later use.
For that, fill your columns on the main screen by simply double-clicking on each category. So far, so good. But we need more metadata.
Choose a fic so it’s highlighted in blue. Then go to "Edit Metadata" in the main tool bar.
A window opens:
Tumblr media
Some information will be pre-filled but you can always edit them. Also, I highly recommend you to change the tags to your liking, same as you can add a book cover of your choice via the browse function.
On a final note: When you're following a fic that is still in-progress, you can simply click the button "FanFicFare" (NOT the arrow next to it!) to update it.
♡( ◡‿◡ ) ENJOY YOUR READ!

10 Reasons Why Your Project Needs A Certified Project Manager, Nulearn
10 Reasons Why Your Project Needs A Certified Project Manager During my ~10 years of experience into Project Management, with multiple big tier companies, I have witnessed multiple projects being kicked off without a Project Manager (based on it's complexity / severity); some of them presenting it as "Delivery Led Transitions". Whilst some of them have been successful, majority of these projects have either crossed their deadlines or had several other impacts like budget spillovers, Client feedback. A project is an undertaking to create a product or provide a service. Generally, projects don’t need a complex methodology when it comes to managing a project, but they benefit from a designated project manager. A project manager increases the likelihood of a project being successful and profitable. Hence I wanted to emphasize on the reasons why a Project needs a Project Manager.. 1. Single Point of Contact / Source of Information A project manager is the central figure of a project, disseminating project information and updates to the Project Team, Business Leaders and Clients, which decreases confusion and increases accuracy. 2. Increase Efficiency The project manager works with team members to confirm which activities must occur in the project and in what order so projects are completed faster and more efficiently. Every project is made up of interconnected activities, each of which has its own set of checks and balances. 3. Control Scope Project scope details the work and activities required to deliver the completed product or service. A phenomenon that often occurs is “scope creep,” which refers to continuous changes to the initial project. To contain creep, a project manager puts markers in place before anyone can add or take away from the scope. 4. Manage Financials Delivering on time and on budget are one of the constraints in any project. A project manager controls not only monetary costs but also the people resources, both internal and external, and equipment costs as well. 5. Manage Time Time is arguably the most important constraint of any project. Because project team members still have day-to-day responsibilities, managing their time can be a challenge. A project manager manages deadlines by setting a schedule at the inception of the project. 6. Schedule Management The project manager plays an important role in ensuring all the team members work on their assigned activities in the appropriate order. The project manager helps members calculate the time a task takes and solves any problems so they can successfully meet their deadlines. 7. Identifying & Mitigating Project Risks No matter how well planned, a chance for potential risks in a project exists. A project manager anticipates and identifies risks and creates a risk response process to track their status. It’s important to make risk prevention part of the initial planning phase. If the project manager can’t prevent the problems, managing them is the next best solution. 8. Administer Procurement (Doesn't apply to all Org.) If your project requires purchases from outside vendors, the project manager manages the contracts and terms and tracks invoices to ensure suppliers and the project customer live up to the terms of the contract. Note: Some Org. has a dedicated Procurement team which manages end to end procurement. In this case, a PM needs to ensure that every activity is on-track as per the timelines. (For e.g.: Raise a PR (purchase requests), PO (purchase order) creation, Sign-offs / approvals, Negotiations, etc.). 9. Communicate With Stakeholders As project progresses, it is important to make stakeholders aware of any risks and successes along the way. The project manager communicates the goals and performance to business leaders in a regularly scheduled report. 10. Close the Project After the project meets the goals and expectations of the project customer, the project manager documents and reviews the project phases with the team members and leadership to analyze patterns, trends and opportunities for improvement for the next project. The Grumpy Git Returns 2
Why is the Tech world so fundamentally broken?
Hello readers I’m back after a major hiatus.  What on earth is going on in the world of technology.  It’s all going to hell.
You might think what the hell am I on about.  It seems things in the industry are completely broken and for all the complaints out there no one seems to do anything about it.
Here are just a few examples...
1) Apple releases Mac Pro with a basic price tag of £5000
What on earth, I would understand such a price point if this was an amazing all singing all dancing machine, but its not.  The basic system is an i5 system.  Seriously then everything else can be upgraded by Apple or exclusive dealers or it invalidates your warranty and the machine locks you out using the T2 security chip.
Now Apple have been on shaky ground regarding tech for a number of years which problems such as lowering sales of iPhones because by the time they release them they have already been superseded by the competition.
Apple used to be seen as the innovative company of the world, the kings of aesthetic and cool.  Now even the hipsters of the world are thinking Apple products are too expensive and not really giving much to the world.
It doesn’t help that every MacOS version is now more like iOS and they are locking you further and further into the Apple Garden.  What i mean by that is blocking anything that is not in the Apple Play Store, not supporting hardware (Nvidia graphics cards, Wi-Fi etc.) and now preventing upgrades.  Which is alienating their customers...
No one is going to buy the Mac Pro one because the price is ludicrous.  Two everyone is speculating Apple is going to change to using ARM processors so the whole system is probably about to change.   People got bitten with PPC, only for Apple to switch to Intel and abandon PPC.  So they will not get away with it twice.
Apple admit too being a $1 trillion company but how long will it last considering you are further and further alienating your own customers.    Now don’t get me wrong there will always be a hardcore group of loyal Apple consumers, but you have to wonder is it enough to keep Apple where it stands.
Personally given their listed losses it looks like the bubble is starting to burst.  But equally getting back to the point who seriously believed a £5000 desktop would be seen and thought wow that’s a good idea.  The mind boggles.
A lot of people are now building Hackintosh machines because one its cheaper to do so and two for less money you probably get more power than the Mac Pro.  Crazy.
2) Software companies putting out totally broken games as full releases at full price.
This one is pretty obvious I can site many examples her but of course probably the biggest known was of course Bethesda’s Fallout 76.  Now I’m not going to reiterate its story there has been plenty of coverage about it on YouTube.
Now before anyone starts yes I accept there is Early Access programs on Steam and the likes but they at least admit up front that the item you are purchasing is not the final game and may be subject to change.
However we are seeing more and more companies putting out games that require huge day one updates of several gigabytes.  DLC breaking game elements in major ways and live services either not working or not being able to cope with the loads.
Now I admit I am not a programmer and maybe someone who is in the game will be able to shed a better light, but it seems these major corporations such as EA, Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard and more are making millions off the backs of programmers who are expected to deliver higher and higher standard stuff in less and less time.
These guys are being forced into working extraneous “crunch” hours being put under immense stress and not really seeing much in the way of benefits.  They seem to take a lot of abuse if the programmer refuses.
2019 showed many cases of ex-employees reporting abuse.  Now I know some could be put down to sour grapes but there is a lot to be said about there is no smoke without fire.
It seems many programmers are complaining about their immense pressure to perform.  As I said I’m not a programmer so I can’t really say I know.  They seem to have no representation in their corner to help them such a union and because a lot of them are freelance many corporations see them as disposable.
This to me is ludicrous.  Without these programmers most of these corporations would not have a product to sell and equally wouldn’t exist.  So why treat them like dirt, you are cutting off your nose to spite your face.
Also for all things like Fallout 76 proved for all they released a half arsed game and took controversy.  Not once has someone said that this practice is unacceptable.
If you bought a Television and when you turned it on it showed BBC1 and BBC2 only and the rest was coming later in a software patch update.  You would complain vehemently and take back the television for your money back.
So why can software companies get away with releasing a half finished product.... Which moves us on to...
3) New Linux phones been released unfinished
Linux phones are the latest and “greatest” thing since sliced bread if you believed the hype.  Security conscious phones that don’t report everything about you, kill switches to disable base bands so you can’t be monitored at all times and of course its Linux based so the operating system is free.
All sounds good and hence why Purism Librem 5 and the Pine phone both have had a major interest shown in them.
Given all the concerns raised recently regarding Google and how it uses its data and problems such as the many data leaks of various sites.  Privacy regarding your data is being raised.
Ironically Microsoft who have admitted they are having Windows 10 report back data are not in these investigations.  But hey ho.
However its not the fact its Linux that’s a problem for me.  I like Linux but what i don’t get is this new concept of the phone is taking longer than we thought and people are worried.  SO what we will do is supply you your phone but most of the software doesn’t work but in the next few months we will implement various features to get it working.
They even give them titles such as the Pine Phone Braveheart Edition or the Librem 5 Spring.  Basically a broken p[hone which you have paid money for hoping that eventually it may work.
Once again these phones are hardly cutting edge so even if they do get it working.  Half of the tech is at least a generation back.
Now I understand creating a phone and its OS from scratch is hard work     and such processed take time.  However giving you a shell of a phone and leaving you to wait for the rest is a bit much.
This is similar to the TV but in this case because Linux is open source.  Your TV now only has two channels and they want you to write the next bit of the code to sort the programs out.  They say it’s a learning experience.
I’m waiting for someone to build a house and then if you want any windows, heating or electric you have to have to either build it yourself or wait for an upgrade.  Madness.
4) Live services...
When I started in computing my first machine was a ZX Spectrum 48K it wasn’t amazing but it was a computer.  You bought games, you could program it and it was yours to do with as you pleased.
Modern day systems both in the computing world and console world you are signed into agreements that no matter what the machine is.  The code involved is the property of X company and although you physically own the machine you can not amend it, alter it,  complain about it or they can withdraw your rights to said systems and lock you out.
What? I own a machine but if I do anything beyond your limitations you will sue me.  How did this become a thing.
It was bad enough with Intellectual Copyright bullshit but this is getting ludicrous.
They have since took it one step further in games now several of them will not allow you to play them unless permanently connected to their servers or pay an ongoing subscription fee.
Which equally they can close at a moments notice because they decide they don’t like it and you have no recompense.  How many games have we heard have been just abandoned by their publishers.
Especially in the MMORPG genre.  Games are no longer purchased like tapes with physical medium as now most are download codes in physical cases.  If you actually get a physical DVD you are lucky.
However it doesn’t mean squat if you buy the game and the servers no longer exist.  Several games have managed to allow people to have their own private servers but many of them don’t exist.
How is this allowed to exist.  How are the computer industry allowed to sell products which have no guarantee.  Also why is no one questioning this...
If Valve decide enough was enough, they were sick of being blamed for the controversial games been stuck on its site by asset flippers etc., and decided to close down the service.
Sure they would have to give people notice but beyond that they have no obligation to make sure you have access to the games you bought.  This to me seems a dodgy game.
And with more services such as the Epic Games Store, UPlay, Origin,  and Google Stadia this is only going to get worse.
We need some form of legislation to prevent this from happening.  We are losing more and more data everyday on the internet due to leaks, server closures and companies just going out of business.  Very little of this software and data is being archived so is lost.
This is a problem.  Now I understand people saying it’s my game. But equally you have been paid for said game and now they are saying we cant use it or access it.
Something is fundamentally wrong here.
I could go on with further points such as large corporations closing Software Studios making games and complaining they sold 7 million copies and didn’t sell 10 million copies. Major tech companies refusing to pay taxes but want tax breaks from major governments but that can be the topic for another day.
As I said the tech world is fundamentally broken and needs a shake up.  Why are we paying the price for their inability to sort out their problems.
Until next time ...

Got Sims 2 Ultimate Collection via Origin? Never update without backing up your game files.
I had an experience today where an Origin client update completely wrecked my Sims 2 game (or so I thought), and I don’t want this happening to anyone else. And before you ask, an EA rep walked me through clearing the cache on my computer. That didn’t work.
The Issue I Had
I updated Origin because it was touted as “mandatory” (cue eyeroll that gives me a migraine). When I went to open TS2UC after the update...The game wouldn’t open! Running the program as an administrator didn’t work, compatibility mode did nothing. I would click on TS2UC and instead of launching it would open the Sims 2 copy in my Game Library. Clicking ‘Play Game’ would make the Origin window disappear for a second or two (as if the game was about to load) only for nothing to happen. The game was not launching in the computer Task Manager either.
After much of the day trying to figure things out (with the “help” of EA/Origin Games support representatives), warning fellow Simmers on Reddit, and thinking my game was wrecked, I have a solution.
Backup Your Game Files Before All Origin Updates*
Backup your Sims 2 Ultimate Collection Folder (or specific folders like Downloads, Lot Catalog, Neighborhoods, and SC4Terrains).
Place the copy somewhere else in your computer that is not the Documents > EA Games folder.
For more information on backing up files, read about it via ModtheSims.
*The Sims 2 is a “legacy game” (read: old, geriatric, and unsupported), so support is not really available outside of the Simmer community, and Origin is not accounting for the game whatsoever when new client updates are published. Because of this, you need to back up all your game before allowing updates. Even if you have no had this happen to you and you believe it never will, backup your files anyway. If you have your Origin client set to auto-update, I recommend turning that feature off so you have time to backup TS2. In fact, putting Origin in Offline Mode may be in your best interest (read more under the Misc. section).
Please only follow this solution if clearing your Origin cache didn’t work, or you are not comfortable messing with program data and such.
The Solution
After backing up the files you want saved, uninstall the Origin client from your computer. It is not necessary to uninstall Sims 2. You can leave that alone. (In fact, don’t touch TS2 in your Uninstall Program manager unless this tutorial doesn’t work!)
Reinstall Origin.
After logging back in, go to your Game Library, and right-click on the TS2UC thumbnail.
Click ‘Repair Game’. Let it repair.
Launch TS2 and let it load.
Check if your game was switched back to the default settings (no custom content, no saved games, no custom neighborhoods, etc.).
If you find anything like this changed, that is where the backed up files come in handy! Close your game.
Go to the Documents > EA Games folder. Delete any and all files within. Place your backed up game files in that same folder. Launch. Voila!
Or are you like me and you already updated the game before you found this tutorial and backed up your files, so you “lost” everything?
Fear not!
Check your Documents > EA Games folder. Are there two files (one saying ‘The Sims 2′, the other saying ‘The Sims™ 2 Ultimate Collection’)?
Delete the folder that doesn’t have your Downloads folder (or it is not filled with your finds), has no custom neighborhood(s) in the Neighborhood folder, and/or no custom neighborhood(s) in the SC4Terrains folder. This will most likely be the most recently created folder, usually with only a few folders/files inside (instead of 16-20 total items), and/or it may be entitled simply ‘The Sims 2′.
After deleting the appropriate folder, please make sure it is named  The Sims™ 2 Ultimate Collection exactly, or TS2 will create another file (more than likely named The Sims 2 only).
Misc.
You may notice that the resolution has switched to the default. You will have to re-edit the Graphics Rule information, including using the Graphics Rule Maker program from Sims Network.
For those of you who only use Origin to play Sims 2, it would be better to avoid all Origin updates by using Offline Mode. Read this thread on ModtheSims for more info.
I am not programmer extraordinaire by any means, but if you need help, please feel free to contact me and I will try my best to help. If you have a better solution, do the same - let me know! Happy Simming!

A Word of Advice to Our Trainees
There is general advice and exam specific advice (highlighted text has hyperlinks).
General Advice
This applies to preparing for local practice in Singapore. This has a slightly American slant (unfortunately the exams you will be sitting are British and Australian).
Refer to your JCST Seamless Programme Medical Microbiology Training Syllabus and use this as a checklist. Literally tick off each item as you go so that there are no gaps in your training experience.
During your lab training you will be used to seeing tests as individual items. However you must get your head round to seeing things also from the clinician’s perspective. For a patient presenting with a particular syndrome which battery of tests are appropriate for that individual patient? Even for a single pathogen (particularly with viruses), there may be a choice of different tests that can be used. Which are most appropriate for that particular situation? This is one of the characteristics that distinguishes medical student knowledge from that of a microbiology trainee.
I suggest right at the beginning of training to get the fundemental cliinical perspective in place by reading Infectious Diseases A Clinical Approach by Yung et al. This is book is simple enough to be read in a fortnight. (Update Jan 2020: The new kid on the block is Comprehensive Review of Infectious Diseases by Spec A et al-which comes with an ebook with over 400 nicely written MCQs-unfortunately it probably can’t be finished in 2 weeks).
Please get yourself a microbiology textbook and systematically read it from cover-to-cover. The most appropriate at time of writing is the latest edition of Koneman’s Color Atlas and Text book of Diagnostic Microbiology. You should try to complete reading this book within your first year of training.
This will not be enough for Virology. Some may find Khare Guide to Clinical and Diagnostic Virology too simple but I think reading it cover-to-cover is still useful for the 1st year trainee. For subsequent years you will need to read selectively  Loeffelholz Clinical Virology Manual for the lab perspective and maybe dip into Richman Clinical Virology for the clinical approach.
The following websites are useful
For parasitology
CDC DPDx
Gorgas Course Case of the Week
CREEPY DREADFUL WONDERFUL PARASITES
For mycology
Mycology Online
One of the first things you should acquaint yourself with is the local lab, and hospital, biosafety and disinfection/sterilization policies. For lab biosafety the freely available BMBL should suffice as a reference.
In practice, you can expect to give a lot of advice on specimen collection so please familiarize yourself with our Pathology Handbook (and know where to find it). For reference you should look at A Guide to Specimen Management in Clinical Microbiology.
You should also familiarize yourself with our lab manuals (and those of the labs you visit when posted out-ask yourself why they are doing things differently from us).
For technical details you should also refer to the Clinical Microbiology Procedures Handbook.
There are 2 books you will always be consulting as references
Mandell, Douglas, and Benett’s Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases Use this when you are following up interesting cases or building up your case portfolio
ASM Manual of Clinical Microbiology Not to be used as your primary textbook!
The most useful journals to read are the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology Newsletter and Clinical Microbiology Reviews.
Please also look at the Cumitech Collection and the CLSI documents.
For infection control I like Lautenbach Practical Healthcare Epidemiology. For more details you should be keeping up to date with journals like Infection Control and Epidemiology and the Journal of Hospital Infection.
By the time you start preparing for the Part 2 exams you should be dealing with, and reading up on, management issues.
You should have helped trouble shooting of QA failures, and be familiar with the other CLSI documents that are relevant to lab practice but not microbiology specific. You should have been involved in at least one CAP accreditation inspection and should have passed the CAP inspector course itself.
The most useful lab management textbooks are
Garcia Clinical Lab Management Wagar Lab Administration for Pathologists Varnadoe Medical Laboratory Management and Supervision
But you should also familarize yourself with the local regulations governing labs and your hospital policy for issues like staff discipline etc…
Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath)
Look up the FRCPath training syllabus and tick off items to make sure you have covered all the ground. Look up past-year exams so that during your training you get a sense which lab situations you encounter are likely to come up as exam topics.
The principle of the postgraduate exams is they test you for your suitability to be a consultant. Because local practice is more lab-based, you will have to simulate the UK training environment.
A UK trainee may handle 5-10 positive blood cultures a day followed by a ward round that covers another 5 patients with infection issues like osteomyelitis or septic arthritis, AND a daily ICU round. They may encounter an infection control scenario every 1-2 weeks (needlestick, outbreak, staff exposure etc…). For this, they are giving specific advice including further investigations, antibiotic choice, dosage (remember they are also advising on therapeutic drug moniitoring for vancomycin and aminoglycosides), infection control measures, etc…
Even though we do not manage patients like they do in the UK you should build up your own personal case portfolio based on what you report in the lab. Do not stick to the minimum requirement in the syllabus! Actively follow up these cases and imagine how you would manage these patients if you were the doctor-in-charge.
Get the Oxford Handbook of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, read it cover-to-cover and use it to guide your ‘management’. How would you adjust the dose for renal imparment? What alternative would you use if there was penicillin allergy?
UK trainees often refer to Kucer’s The Use of Antibiotics when finding out details about antibiotics so you should read it up for at least the common antibiotics that are commonly used (in Singapore and the UK).
Read through the editorials and guidelines in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy going back at least 2 years (esp guidelines and new antibiotics). Check out the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy website.
Two books I find useful for selective reading are Fungal Infection: Diagnosis and Management by Richardson and Warnock. Lecture Notes on Tropical Medicine by Beeching and Gill
I have not got a copy of the Communicable Disease Control and Health Protection Handbook yet but it looks like it could be handy (Update Jan 2020: I have a copy now and it is useful for RCPath trainees).
You should also construct scenarios for infection control and outbreak management to supplement your actual experience. A lot of exposure management (e.g. VZV, measles, hepatitis B) can be found in the Green Book.
Go through the IPC in 5 videos. This is part of the trainee education program. Every UK trainee knows this material. So you should too.
Read through the editorials and guidelines in the Journal of Hospital Infection going back at least 2 years. Check out the Hospital Infection Society website.
You should subscribe (or have access ) to the UKNEQAS Microbiology Interpretive Comments.
You will also need to pretend that you are a Consultant Microbiologist practicing in the UK. Unlike the US, there is a lot more central control in the UK so all UK consultants receive and are expected to comply with the same set of guidance documents.
I could create my own list of useful websites where such documents may be found but microregistrar has already done it for me. PHE, HTM (e.g. dealing with water  supply in hospitals)  are particularly relevant. I don’t know if questions ever came out from the DH Building Notes, but it may be useful to know what relevant documents are in there (like HBN 00-09).
Don’t forget to scour the RCPath website and even read the bulletin going back 2 years for any material that may be relevant (like audit reports, documents or discussion of current college issues).
And don’t forget the UK follows ISO15189 for lab accreditation so you probably should know a bit about UKAS (How would you perform measurement of uncertainty for a PCR test?).
In my opinion, the FRCPath is quite a straightforward exam, and paradoxically quite a difficult exam to pass at the same time. They are not likely to ask anything a District General Hospital Microbiologist will not encounter, so no exotic bugs here. If you are fully involved in daily lab activities you may even be better prepared to sit the exam purely on accumulated experience rather than mugging standard textbooks. But as you can see from this list-if you do not know what to spend your energy on, fail to ensure you accumulate appropriate experience, or if you do not read the right material you could end up with close to zero exam-specific knowledge.
(Update Jan 2020: Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Virology: A Q&A Approach for Specialist Medical Trainees is a new MCQ book which is useful for RCPath candidates. I am not that keen on the format of the MCQs (prefer Spec et al) but the selection of topics will give you some idea of the domain knowledge college examiners are looking for).
Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA)
The RCPA seems to have changed to be more similar to the RCPath in the sense that they are now testing more practical consultant competence and less esoteric knowledge.
Therefore go through the same process as for the FRCPath.
Investigate the RCPA website for the training syllabus and other issues that Australian pathologists are currently grappling with.  For Part 2, relevant issues may not be obviously microbiological (like how do you handle bullying in the lab?). The RCPA actually put a lot of training material onsite including the National Microbiology Webinar series (need to be RCPA registered trainee for access). It goes without saying you should go through all of them.
Be aware they have their own Antibiotic Guidelines Book.

Beginning the long journey... (Year 0, Day 1 [sorta])
As I begin down this long and arduous path, I figured why not catalog all of my progress (and failures) in a blog for the world to see!
Tumblr media
All memes aside, I should probably begin with an
INTRODUCTION:
I’m Manuel; my friends call me Manny. I’m a recent graduate from a bachelor of music (B.Mus) program in southern California where I was fortunate enough to meet some great friends, mentors, and professionals who helped guide and inspire me to create some awesome aural artwork. I’ve loved music for as long as I could remember, and it was always something that drove me to be my best. I’ve aspired to play many instruments from a young age and always sought perfection trying to master their intricacies. I studied both composition and saxophone performance in college, while frequently freelancing as an audio engineer (my current line of work).
But wait, isn’t this a game development blog?: Yes, yes it is.
Due to a variety of circumstances and personal interests, I’ve decided to jump ship from one extremely difficult creative field (concert/classical/experimental music) to another (game development), leaving behind a life I feel indebted to and, honestly, still love very much. I’ve been thinking of making this jump for quite some time (a year or so), with a long, loooooong history of engaging with the video game medium on a deeply-infatuated level, which ultimately backs up this decision. Throughout my life, video games always played a pivotal role in my own forms of expression, happiness, leisure, and community. From my very first Gameboy Color to the now flourishing Nintendo Switch, from Pokemon to Monster Hunter to Bioshock and more, I’ve been hooked. Honestly, I’ve always considered these worlds my second, third, fourth, and n-th homes. Because of this, I’ve felt like I have a duty to give back to the community however I can. After five years of collegiate study and ridding the struggle bus, I realize that there’s no better time than the present to chase this dream. THE NOW, or WHERE TO START:
In firmly deciding on this change, I didn’t necessarily know where to begin. Hell, I didn’t even really know what careers or roles existed in the game development community. After finding scouring the internet and finding some helpful resources, I was blown away at the sheer amount of readjusting I’d need to do to even think about entering this field.
For example, this messy bundle of terms flooded my brain while trying to get a grasp of the industry:
Senior-level
Lead
Technical Director
Junior-level
Temp

Minorities/POC
And this list over-simplifies the complex web these roles create with each other. That being said, the last month or so has consisted of me scouring the internet for resources, deciding on what my long-term and short-term goals are, and orienting myself towards taking on Goliath.
MOVING FORWARD:
After being bombarded with this information, I decided that the best course of action for moi was to shoot for a game engineering/programming role, as I also had a brief two-year stint in astrophysics research and STEM coursework during my undergraduate degree. Another one of my passions, the STEM fields have always held a dear place in my heart and I picked up a lot of programming skills/languages in college, notably Java & Python. Intensive music study has also done wonders for the technically-oriented work I currently do, so I figured it would be fun to challenge myself with STEM-oriented work once again. So far, I hold a great, great admiration for lead game designers like Hideo Kojima and others, so design is also something I’m looking into. RESOURCES:
In doing my research, I’ve found a variety of extremely helpful resources that provided me with the insight to start this journey. I’ll post the most helpful ones below: GameDevUnchained (Podcast/Website):
This podcast, hosted by Brandon Pham & Larry Charles (both established AAA game developers), explores the current state of affairs in the video game industry. Their conversations are filled with wit, charm, and tons of information, from wage negotiation and employment to indie development and technical direction. No topic is missed* (well, except for the exact technical aspects of being an artist, developer, or programmer). Despite this slight oversight, it’s still worth its weight in gold due to the fact that they bring in a new guest every week who touches on a specific topic. I’ve gained most of my working knowledge about the industry’s complexities from this source. [Currently on episode: 26] Game School Online (GSO):
This revolutionary piece of pedagogy is an online game development school that is ENTIRELY FREE. Founded and ran by the hosts of GameDevUnchained, GSO’s main focus is free game development education with a focus on artwork, modeling, and technical artistry done through the Unreal 4 engine. The school is optionally supported through Patreon and provides special benefits to subscribers; however, a subscription isn’t necessary to enroll. Enrollment periods happen 4 times a year, with heavy waitlists for non-subscribers due to the need to keep class numbers down. Their educators consist of “Scholars” who teach and monitor the courses, all of whom are active AAA/Indie developers. Notable Scholars include Brandon Pham, Larry Charles, Leo Gonzales, Olaf Piesche (my mentor!), Matt Brown, Tai Chen, and many others. For subscribers, there’s the option to interact 1-on-1 with scholars, serving as lessons and mentorships to poise the budding student to enter the field. I’m currently a $40/month subscriber, which gets me a 30-minute session every month with Olaf. I’d like to stress, however, that at its current state GSO seems heavily oriented towards artists, with the art-oriented roles overshadowing the engineer/programmer roles 8-to-2. In addition, all classes are oriented towards art or design. This means Olaf & Matt are only doing 1-on-1 sessions. -_- *Oh well, better than nothing.*
The next two are both variations on the paid-online-schooling trope, but they seem alright nonetheless...
Coursera:
Coursera is a platform that hosts specialized “certification” courses that were designed by universities around the world. These certification courses are essentially a compilation of videos, assignments, and online templates that are moderated by online staff (and presumably not monitored by the actual course instructors ever). Each certification consists of about 4-6 classes and takes anywhere from 6 months to a year to complete. Each class runs an average of 1-2 months and has about 1 assignment due every week. There is a peer-grading system which can be iffy at times, but it’s worked out well for me so far. The only downside is that these courses can be EXPENSIVE; however, there are financial aid options for those of us *ahemmeahem* that can’t afford the costs. Luckily, my cost for the first class was waived completely. I’m currently enrolled in the Game Design certification course created by Cal Arts. I’ll be updating you all on my progress every week as I work through this course. Something odd I’ve noticed is that the videos for the Intro to Game Design course are astoundingly short; I’m surprised this course costs anything at all given the kind of information I’ve received out of it so far.
Udemy:
Like its quasi-academic counterpart, Udemy hosts courses created by content creators (I’m not too sure on the qualifications these creators have...) that consists primarily of video tutorials. The beautiful thing about Udemy is that, unlike Coursera, their courses often times cost very little if you go through the right channels! This means promo codes from websites like IGN or your favorite tech reviewer, etc etc. I was fortunate enough to grab the Unreal Crash Course course for $10 through an IGN promotion last month. Also unlike Coursera, there are no assignments or grading systems in place for your work. Instead, there are often forums that host dozens and dozens of posts from current and past students of the course. This feature has felt surprisingly fresh and fun; however, not receiving a lot of direct feedback has its downsides. I’ve been slowly chugging away at this course, having finished 1/4th of it so far. I’ve also found that there tends to be much more technical work to be learned from Udemy as opposed to Coursera (in terms of game development); however, this may just be my limited scope, as I haven’t looked around too much more.
Game Engine Architecture, Third Edition by Jason Gregory
(Naughty Dog Lead Programmer):
This book is AMAZING for the aspiring game engineer, as it’s filled to the brim with a detailed analysis of common game engine architecture as told by the lead programmer at Naughty Dog (go Uncharted/Last of Us teams!!!!). I’m currently in the second chapter of the book, but to give a brief overview of its entirety along with my own descriptions below each heading:
Introduction
“discusses the ins and outs of the industry
Tools of the Trade
“an in-depth look into programming tools”
Fundamentals of Software Engineering for Games
“development cycles and tool usage”
Parallelism and Concurrent Programming
“the title says it all”
3D Math for Games
“3D geometry and Linear Algebra, along with programming algorithms” (go STEM!)
Engine Support Systems
“a look at memory and systems”
Resources and the File System
“how to handle game assets”
The Game Loop and Real-Time Simulation
“graphics rendering loops and gameplay loops, along with dealing with time”
Human Interface Devices
“dealing with I/O”
Tools for Debugging and Development
“the title says it all”
The Rendering Engine
“rasterization and rending pipelines”
Animation Systems
“skeletal meshes and processing”
Collision and Rigid Body Dynamics
“physics systems and other collision systems” (go STEM!)
Audio
“Dealing with sound design and 3D audio” (go music!)
Introduction to Gameplay Systems
“dealing with data, game objects, and world editors”
Runtime Gameplay Foundation Systems
“dealing with all of the constituent parts and updating the game”
You mean there’s more?
“more to be learned”
As you can tell, there’s a whole lot of information to be gained by reading a textbook like this. Jason states in the Foreword that this is really meant to be used to teach a three-class series on game programming at the university level; however, I find that you’ll be able to understand a lot of this pretty well so long as you have an ample amount of programming experience (preferably with C++). That being said, it’s a perfect springboard for me and I’m so eager to continue that I sort of want to finish writing this entry already so I can get back to it! *o* It cost about $85 for a physical copy and $47 for a digital copy (Kindle).
So, that wraps up my currently used resources list! I hope it can serve as a starting point for some of your own deep-dives into the world-wide-web for resources! CONCLUSION: Thanks for sticking with me this far everyone. I know I didn’t dive into my past that much, but I hope it gives you somewhat of an idea as to who I am. In starting this journey, I’ve realized the importance of documentation and reaching out to build a community with others, so I hope that we can all interact and take this journey together, in some form. Tomorrow I’ll be delving into my current projects that I’m aiming to work on and some of my personal inspiration for taking the game development plunge, as well as discuss what I’m currently working on in terms of study/development. I hope you all have a good day, and never feel like it’s too late to start chasing your dreams again! - Manny Extra: Game of the Day - Disgaea 1 Complete on Nintendo Switch I’ve loved this game since I first played it way back in the early 2000s, so when I heard this was coming to Switch as a slightly remastered port, I couldn’t wait! The updated artwork looks great and I’m eager to get all of those extra scenarios completed! ;) GO SRPGs!

Top Rated Text To Speech Software For Mac?
Tumblr media
The Best Free Text-to-Speech Software app downloads for Mac: Voice TextSpeech Pro Elements Toau SpeechMirror Speechissimo Listen Later. The Best Free Text-to-Speech Software app downloads for Mac. There are many free text to speech software available in the market. Most of these software work almost the same way – basically convert to speech. They differ in the type of documents that they support, and in ease of conversion from text to speech. If your OS of choice is Mac OS X, and all you need is basic but extremely solid text to speech (TTS) functionality, you don’t even have to bother with a third party software application, as the OS’ native Text to Speech feature has you covered.
Top Rated Text To Speech Software
Mac Text To Speech Online
Free Text To Speech Software
In years gone by, text to speech software was rather expensive, but these days there are excellent text to speech tools available free of charge. We're here to help you find the very best tools that will make converting written documents to audio files as easy as possible.
Text to speech software can be enormously helpful for anyone who's visually impaired, or has a condition like dyslexia that makes reading on screens tricky. It can also help overcome language barriers for people who read a language but don't speak it, or are in the process of learning.
Text to speech software is also ideal if you want to listen to a document while doing something else, if you find it easier to retain information you've heard, or if you want to sense-check something you've written.
Here's our pick of the best free text to speech software for reading either individual paragraphs or whole documents aloud.
1. Balabolka
Save text as a spoken audio file, with customizable voices
Lots of voices to choose from
There are a couple of ways to use Balabolka's free text to speech software: you can either copy and paste text into the program, or you can open a number of supported file formats (including DOC, PDF, and HTML) in the program directly. In terms of output you can use SAPI 4 complete with eight different voices to choose from, SAPI 5 with two, or the Microsoft Speech Platform if you download and install the necessary files. Whichever route you choose, you can adjust the speech, pitch and volume of playback to create custom voice.
In addition to reading words aloud, this free text to speech software can also save narrations as audio files in a range of formats including MP3 and WAV. For lengthy documents you can create bookmarks to make it easy to jump back to a specific location and there are excellent tools on hand to help you to customize the pronunciation of words to your liking.
With all these features to make life easier when reading text on a screen isn't an option, Balabolka is best free text to speech software around.
2. Natural Reader
Free text to speech software with its own web browser
Choice of interfaces
Natural Reader is a free text to speech tool that can be used in a couple of ways. The first option is to load documents into its library and have them read aloud from there. This is a neat way to manage multiple files, and the number of supported file types is impressive, including ebook formats. There's also OCR, which enables you to load up a photo or scan of text, and have it read to you.
The second option takes the form of a floating toolbar. In this mode, you can highlight text in any application and use the toolbar controls to start and customize text to speech. This means you can very easily use the feature in your web browser, word processor and a range of other programs. There's also a built-in browser to convert web content to speech more easily.
3. Panopretor Basic
Easy text to speech conversion, with WAV and MP3 output
Top Rated Text To Speech Software
Exports in WAV and MP3 formats
As the name suggests, Panopreter Basic delivers free text to speech conversion without frills. It accepts plain and rich text files, web pages and Microsoft Word documents as input, and exports the resulting sound in both WAV and MP3 format (the two files are saved in the same location, with the same name).
The default settings work well for quick tasks, but spend a little time exploring Panopreter Basic's Settings menu and you'll find options to change the language, destination of saved audio files, and set custom interface colors. The software can even play a piece of music once it's finished reading – a nice touch you won't find in other free text-to-speech software.
If you need something more advanced, a premium version of Panopreter is available for US$29.95 (about £20, AU$40). This edition offers several additional features including toolbars for Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer, the ability to highlight the section of text currently being read, and extra voices.
4. WordTalk
An extension that adds text to speech to your word processor
Customizable voices
Developed by the University of Edinburgh, WordTalk is a toolbar add-on for Word that brings customizable text to speech to Microsoft Word. It works with all editions of Word and is accessible via the toolbar or ribbon, depending on which version you're using.
Mac Text To Speech Online
The toolbar itself is certainly not the most attractive you'll ever see, appearing to have been designed by a child. Nor are all of the buttons' functions very clear, but thankfully there's a help file on hand to help.
There's no getting away from the fact that WordTalk is fairly basic, but it does support SAPI 4 and SAPI 5 voices, and these can be tweaked to your liking. The ability to just read aloud individual words, sentences or paragraphs is a particularly nice touch. You also have the option of saving narrations, and there are a number of keyboard shortcuts that allow for quick and easy access to frequently used options.
5. Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader
A great choice for converting text from websites to speech
Good file format support
Despite its basic looks, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader has more to offer than you might first think. You can open numerous file formats directly in the program, or just copy and paste text.
Alternatively, as long as you have the program running and the relevant option enables, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader can read aloud any text you copy to the clipboard – great if you want to convert words from websites to speech – as well as dialog boxes that pop up. Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader can also convert text files to WAV format.
Unfortunately the selection of voices is limited, and the only settings you can customize are volume and speed unless you burrow deep into settings to fiddle with pronunciations. Additional voices are available for a US$25 fee (about £20, AU$30), which seems rather steep, holding it back from a higher place in our list.

I’m writing lots, and frequently getting arm ache. Are there any free good speech to text software programs available to download? I just want to up notepad and start talking, and have my voice translated into text and typed into notepad.

Windows 7 has speech recognition which is good.
Great Question. I am looking for the same thing but I don't have windows 7 or vista. Or any money.

just found this i hope it work as well as they say, [Broken Link Removed]
I'm no big Windoze fan but the speech to text in Windows is every bit as good aS Dragon as I use them both. In ANY speech to text you have to be aware of mic positioning and extraeous noise. Work on those two things and the text will take care of itself.
i found the speach recognition software on my computer, but i need the speech to text and now i can only find text to speech! someone can help?
Dragon naturally speaking software is the best one.
I'm a special ed teacher who needs a Speech to text software (hopefully free) for 12 students with great ideas but few or no writing skills (K-1).
I haven't read where anyone has mentioned Talk It Type It yet. It is very economical. I bought the basic software about 6 years ago. I paid aprox 20.00 for it. Much cheaper than Dragon. TITI does have higher priced editions but I only needed the basic. I had to train it to recognize my voice, but you will have to do that with any of them. Google them to ck them out. I haven't checked recently to see if the co. is still in business. I say that because I haven't heard any ads about the software like they had a few years back. It could be worth checking them out? I like mine.
Just started using the Windows Speech Recognition and it seems to work well, but needs a lot of patience in training the computer to recognise your voice. Wanted a free option to start with and didn't know I had this on my computer all this while.. Anyone know how I can access the dictionary so as to add a few words? Or does it work with the standard windows dictionary, so I edit my words there. Still getting used to it..thanks to all who recommended this!
Of that I'm not certain, but it may be a great question to ask on MUO Answers..

Beware Dragon, works fine but when you upgrade from say XP to Vista or Vista to 7, the version of Dragon no longer works, and they want you to buy it again.
If you have a reasonably fast computer running Windows 7, the speech recognition which comes with windows works pretty well.
The latest stable version of Google Chrome 11 has been released sporting the new flat icon with improved security and with the speech-to-text support through HTML speech input API. The first official Google service to make use of this service is Google Translate.
Once after downloading and installing Chrome 11 you can head over to Google Translate page to check out Speech-to-text translation. Right now Google supports only English to other languages. If activated you will see a microphone icon turn blue when you hover over it and the Speak Now speech bubble appear. When you have finished speaking and Chrome 11 speech input API has successfully converted voice to text, Google Translate service steps in and translates language. Hit listen button to heart the translated word.
I'm in Australia and they didn't have the icon you described. Maybe this feature is only enabled in particular countries? Just a thought.
Make sure that you have the source language set to English.
Replying to Bill in reply to Robert Aussies have to be careful to recognize that Strine is not English, which is not spoken in Aussie except by English-Speaking visitors -- and that they tune to International (IE: American) English. <]:^)-<
and you, mr. or ms. anonymous, should be careful as well, since strine is as 'english' as 'american english', both a dirivative of the TRUE original British english, which when you come to think about it is closer to strine than it is american english.
Thanks, it works..
hi, can You help me? I need from my phone iPhone from voice recorder translate it to the text in word. It is somehow possible? And it will be perfect if is for free. Thank Ypou so much. I am not talent for technology so I do not know how to do it.
What about any speech to text for Windows XP?
Marylou above recommended Dragon Naturally Speaking. Did you try that one, yet?
It's a bit pricey and I haven't tried it yet
Try using a bit torrent site with peerblock installed and running.
stop going on about dragon
does not work very well on windows 7 home premium thats what i have and it didnt get one word right
that is for windows 7

Might try [Broken Link Removed]. There is a zip file installer available at [Broken Link Removed]. The trial is fully functional, and I tried this on Windows 7. It seemed to act as a front end for MS Speech Recognition, but I am not sure. Worth a shot, though.
free good speech to text software programs available to download http://www.tazti.com/
Thanks for this info although, the term, 'if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is'. I checked out the website in your comment & found that it is free, but for only 15 days. After that, it's $29.95. which is a good price but, I'm afraid the term, 'you get what you pay for' may apply.
So Harry, you went on to check some free software, it wasn't free, and now you're complaining that it's too cheap. Did I sum it up correctly?
I use the Microsoft inbuilt version and it works fine. The trick is to slowly train the program to understand your voice and practice until it does. Accuracy for me is now about 85 to 95%. Its no good expecting speech to text software to work out of the box, although dragon is faster than the others to do that as I have used both. I will upgrade to Dragon 11 later but for now I am using Microsofts version and I write articles from it, so it does work.
Andy
People just don't seem to understand the English language anymore do they??? HUGE difference between 'text to speech' and 'speech to text' .. But if you're reading carefully and not just jumping in because you think you know what you're talking about, it's pretty easy to catch..
Did u guys just use google to find this website : hope it will help u ppl ;) http://www.naturalreaders.com/index.htm from : softlogik
you did not read carefully. they are looking for speech to text NOT text to speech. BIG difference.
i,m in a fix guys. i dont have a card yet and cant buy any? isnt there any freeware?
I have just switched on Windows Seven speech recognition and am trying it out for the first time. With a bit of juggling it seems to be going quite reasonably, but I can see that there is a pretty steep learning curve, especially as I have a quite pronounced lisp (and wasn't that fun to have to spell out).
Still for a first try it's not going too badly and I can see me having some fun playing with this to see if I can get anywhere near my not very impressive typing speed. One interesting thing that I have noticed in my short acquaintance with this program is that less common words seem to be recognized easier, a not unsurprising result all things considered. One thing, I am using the microphone built into my web cam, perhaps with a better quality microphone there would be fewer errors, although I'm not sure if a better microphone would be more susceptible to ambient sound. A secondary issue, and one that might not bother others, is I like to have music playing in the background whilst on my computer, either from my sound system or the computer itself, and that would have to go if I were to use speech recognition as more than an occasional thing. tempersfugue
I use a MacMice Microphone with Vista and it's great. I also use it with my favorite MacBook Pro and one of the newer versions of MacSpeech. The mike is a goosenecked usb item that works well up to 2 feet from my mouth. I can use headphones if I don't want music to interfere as ambient sound. Works with PC or Mac. I've been trying and using speech programs for years. The Vista one trains in about 7 minutes. What has to be done though is corrections, otherwise if it practices mistakes, it gets better at them. My son also uses Dragon Naturally Speaking on his XP and just likes it better every time he uses it. Mike is plug and play, look here: [Broken Link Removed]
I use Google Voice, a free service, when I want speech to text. I use it with my Android cell phone and call my own phone number to leave a message. Google does a good job of transcribing my voice message to text and emailing me the text to my Gmail account.
How to edit text in a pdf. I'm pretty sure Google Voice works with any phone. You don't need to own an Android phone to use it. The service is now out of beta and is open for anyone to use.
Hope this helps.
The built in speech recognition works reasonably well IF you have the right mic and sound card. Wrong mic or sound card and you won't get good results no matter what software you use.
Dragon is better than the built in software, particularly Dragon 10 & 11. I use it all the time. I blogged about it here: [Broken Link Removed]
Wade Hatler
if you have broadband, use [Broken Link Removed], just copy/paste your text and hit the play button. (it was mentioned in makeuseof directory)
the question is about free 'speech to text' software. not 'text to speech'. that's a whole different question. but a useful piece of software nevertheless.
SPEECH TO TEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPEECH TO TEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT TEXT TO SPEECH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yo y u wearin a rag, n wat color is dat.. looks lik dark brown, i wanna say blacc.. u folk?

Hi Massey Speech Project [Broken Links Removed]
possible it can do what you want, mostly freewares will not be good and sharewares like viavoice and dragon are little expensive
It also looks like Dragon is for 32 bit computers. mine's 64bit.
If I ever get a copy, i will be sure to post here and give my verdict, but still think the price is too steep.
this topic is best FREE SPEECH TO TEXT dragon is not free and all the other crap is not speech to text like what theyre looking for not just for commands but to write with
Mango - I'm in the same boat as you, I've been searching for not only a good speech to text program, but also decent API to use in some of my programming. But it appears that speech technology is one of those things that's a bit too advanced to get for free. I'm leaning toward Dragon as well, especially now that a couple people here say that it performs well. My own fear was buying it and then seeing that it doesn't perform any better than the free ones!
If you do buy a copy, let us know how you like it!
Tried Dragon and it did not work well at all
Dragon is great! Here is ver10 and $ 59.00 @ [Broken Link Removed] It is the last version but performed very well. Hope it helps.
@Eduardo I just found the inbuilt voice recognition software in windows 7, and tested it out. it is very poor quality, and even with a microphone, it's unable to get sentences right, so I'm afraid I'll have to pass on that one.
@ha14 I don't have microsoft office installed. i use notepad++ or openoffice.
@Aibek, dragon looks ok, but far too expensive, I was hoping for something completely free. have you had any experience using dragon?
I tried for a few days about 5 years ago. Back then I was mainly looking for a program that would let me use my PC using voice commands. Dragon did fairly well but required user to train it first. Because I wanted something quick I uninstalled it:-)
I heard lots of positive feedback about Dragon Naturally Speaking, http://www.nuance.com/dragon/index.htm Mac os find file.
Unfortunately it's a bit pricey.
Hi
[Broken Link Removed]
If you are using Windows Vista or 7, you may have access to the built in voice recognition program. Look for it in the Star menu. Note: I think you have to be running Home Premium or superior to use this feature, though I'm not completely sure.
isnt this just for voice commands to mover around on your computer????we are looking for somethiing that takes your vocals and types them into text!!!!!!!!!
Windows 7 speech recognition does both - controls the computer, and takes dictation. Like most speech to text programs there is some learning to be done on your and the computer's part. If you want punctuation you'll need to say that (period/stop, comma, etc.) If you have a decent microphone then you are all set.
I guess almost all Vistas, Windows 7 and higher specification XPs have speech recognition. In Vista, go to control panel, then Ease of Access, Follow, Speech recognition and you are set.. The tutorial is easy and the best adive is do not get a cheap microphone.
more punctuation does not the answer change -_-

dear Eduardo, lot of merit to you. I was looking for voice recognition software without knowing it is with me installed in computer. thank you
nanda
Btw y has no one noticed that there is no such thing as Windows superior
read better, he meant windows home premium or better!
Ha, that was funny.
I think he just meant home premium or better
there is actually windows superior. its just not a 'legal' copy of windows 7, the product has been modified to suit the user and the pc in usability and response times. my supervisor was talking about it in work when we were discussing upgrading the OS's in the office computers.
Hi, have experience using the Microsoft Speech to Text software built into Office XP/2002. First computer was Compaq AP200, PII400, 512MB PC100 SDRAM. Headset with boom mike turned out to be the problem. Changed it to Logitech USB set. Ran nicely on USB 1.1 at its rate. Worked amazingly better on the new OptiPlex 745 with its Pentium D dual core and 2 GB of specified RAM - 533 MHz. End of buzz and fuzz, beginning of virtually perfect translation of speech to text paragraph after paragraph. Customer agreed to invest her time and effort in training with her 19' LCD monitor. Good luck, dc
Thanks for sharing your experience, Dick!
