Chapter 1

Pairing: Chris Evans x Reader

Description: Having worked on small independent films for the better part of a decade, your friend tells you about an opening for a script supervisor with a large studio. Wanting to advance your career, you apply and get an interview. The only downside, they prefer to hire crew who are married. It’s just a simple lie, right?

A/N: This fic is simply for fun. I know nothing about the personal lives of the two actors in this series and mean no harm. I am also totally guessing regarding the studio talk. This particular chapter is Chris light as it’s mainly a getting to know the reader. Chapters going forward will be heavy on the Chris aspect. Comments, reblogs, and likes are always welcome. “Do you have the ring?”

“Of course, I have the ring.” You let out a frustrated breath. “This is so silly.”

Joanna chuckles over the line. “Where did you manage to get a ring from anyway?”

“It’s my grandmother’s. I feel like I’m majorly disrespecting her by wearing it when I’m not even engaged. Not to mention I’ve been single for-ev-er.” You drawl out.

“Breathe babe. Just breathe.” She says softly.

You inhale deeply and exhale it slowly.

“Maybe don’t do that directly into the phone.” She laughs again.

“Joanna Elizabeth.” You growl. “Why am I doing this?” You ask catching a glimpse of your reflection in the review mirror. Running a hand through your hair, you see the diamond engagement ring on your left finger. It feels so foreign, even stranger seeing it.

“Because this is a great opportunity to advance your career. Stone Lite is a major studio, Y/N. You can’t keep working on those student films.”

“Hey! I worked on a couple of independent movies. One even showed at Sundance.” You defend.

“And that’s awesome. Really. But this could be your big in. You’ve been doing this, what, for ten years?”

She was right. Ten years and the majority of your income came from student funded films and slinging beers three nights a week.

“And by your silence, you know I am right.”

Smug bitch.

“Ahuh.” You sigh.

“Look, I know it’s not right, but if this increases your chances of getting hired, just wear the damn ring.” Joanna huffs out.

“Easy for you to say, oh, wise married one.”

Joanna previously worked for Stone Lite Studios before moving on to Sony. It was a well-known amongst the employees that if you wanted to get hired for any position that put you in direct contact with any of the actors, you needed to be married. The studio was concerned with fan girls and fan boys. As if adults couldn’t control their urges and not make unwanted advances. Not to mention, married or not, some people still have affairs. Now granted, not every person there was married, but you had a greater advantage to get the job if you were. Right or wrong.

You drew the line at saying you were actually married and settled on being engaged. Not wanting to worry about details like how you kept your last name and lying on the tax forms you’d have to fill out. Even though you’ve only worked on small projects, Hollywood was surprisingly small when it came to the industry. It would be a lot harder to explain a sudden husband versus a fiancé. With Joanna’s agreement, you took your grandmother’s engagement ring from your jewelry box and slipped it on your finger.

“I’m just saying, give it a shot and see where this goes.” She reasoned.

“You’re right. You’re right. I better go in anyway. There’s a golf cart that keeps circling around the lot. They’re probably getting suspicious as to why I’m still in my car.”

She let out a chuckle. “They’re going to give you a ride to the offices. Welcome to the big leagues baby.”

“Ms. Y/L/N, may I call you Y/N? Barbara Floyd, the interviewer and also the production manager asked.

The two of you had already gone over your previous crew history where you held a variety of positions including editor, grip, writer, and even wardrobe. On a whim, you took a script supervisor position on an independent short and really enjoyed it. The next job you took was on full length film in the same position, that’s when you decided that’s where your passion lied. Despite the copious amount of responsibility and that often brought on your anxiety, you loved the challenge.

“Of course, Mrs. Floyd.”

Her eyes went directly to your left hand. “That’s a beautiful ring.” She says.

Here we go.

“Thank you.” You stick your hand out for added affect.

“When’s the wedding?” She asks.

“Next year. We have a lot of out of town family. We just want to make sure they have time to arrange travel.”

Look at me lie. Maybe I should have tried acting.

“I’m sure it will be lovely.” She replies with a wide smile. “I’d like to introduce you to a few people. Please come with me.”

You received a contract via e-mail later that evening. They were bringing you on for one film with the option of three additional films after production. Granted, that’s if you didn’t mess up. Joanna was right, this is the big leagues. If you could make it through the next three to four months, you’d have a long term contract with a major studio.

The next day you received the script. Winter’s Sin was the working title. Whether or not the title would stick was anyone’s guess. You had worked with a few well-known actors, but more of the B list variety. Wonderfully talented actors, but they just didn’t get the parts or the recognition they often deserved. This film had a couple of big names, Keanu Reeves and Chris Evans to be exact. Maggie Jessup was this year’s it girl and rumor had it, this movie was going to launch her into stardom. Generally, you didn’t get star struck, but this was Keanu Reeves! You first fell in love with him when you saw Speed. And again, when you watched The Lake House. Too bad you were technically “engaged”.

Pre-production was set to start next week. This week would be spent going over the script a few times and creating notes. Some wouldn’t consider it the fun part of the job, but you loved diving into a script before it was brought to life. It was also a bonus that you generally liked the script. It was sort of a weepy drama with a love story tied in. But the main plot was between two friends, Milo played by Keanu and William played by Chris. You stayed up half the night and made it almost all the way through. To say you were invested was an understatement.

You read through the script twice more over the next few days and felt ready. Next week you would meet with wardrobe and the writers. The cast would be fitted and you would take photos for your own personal files to make sure styles remain the same for the shoot. Of course, this could all change the day shooting begins which is why you needed to be on your A game and get all the drinking out of the way tonight. You’d have Sunday to recover before starting at the studio on Monday.

Laurel Tavern wasn’t necessarily your favorite bar, but it had become the place to get a bite to eat and a few drinks. It was also the most centrally located place for you and your friends to meet. Joanna and her husband Ian picked you up on the way, knowing you wanted to drink to excess. The three of you along with Travis and Jemma were celebrating your new job tonight. The five of you often found reasons to celebrate whether it was finding a twenty dollar bill on the side of the road, not getting fired from a particular job you’ve been slacking at, for the record, that was Travis, or getting a full eight hours of sleep. Tonight, was really worth celebrating.

“What do you want girl?” Joanna asked, getting up from your usual booth. “First rounds on me. If you’re nice, I might even buy you a second.” She throws you a wink.

“Ummm. I’d like a margarita, hold the margarita.” You say in all seriousness.

“Tequila. Got it.” She says before turning away and heading to the bar.

“Extra limes.” You shout.

She waves her hand behind her head, not bothering to spare your table a look.

Travis joins your booth, a couple of pints of beer in hand. “Here, I brought you one.” Setting a pint of golden goodness in front of you.

You lean over kissing his cheek. “I feel so special.” You coo.

Travis wormed his way into your life seven years ago. He was a senior in college at the time, tall and lanky with hair that stuck out from under his hat. He was filming his final project before graduation. The two of you had a mutual friend in common, Jemma, who was an ex-girlfriend of Travis, how they stayed friends, was beyond you. You helped with directing, a little bit of script management, and even filled in for makeup on a few days. Anything to help a friend of a friend. Travis became your pseudo little brother, well, a brother that you kissed once. You had just broken up with Chad, never date a guy name Chad. Anyway, you had just broken up with Chad and were feeling down in the dumps about yourself. He fed you some bullshit about never being there for him when he needed you. You got angry, he got angry, and then he told you that you weren’t hot enough for him. Yep, Chad was a douche. Travis invited you over, feed you pizza and a ton of beers, then you kissed. He wasn’t a bad kisser, but it felt weird. He was five years younger than you, but it wasn’t just that, he was too much like a brother. The two of you agreed that it was a mistake and never brought it up again. Not even Jemma knew.

The five of you munched on burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches. Jemma bought you a margarita, even after you told her you just wanted the tequila. Her motive was to mooch some of the beverage off of you.

“I don’t want all of the calories. I just want to try it.” She grins. Big rosy cheeks and wild blonde hair. Her British accent on full affect after already consuming a few shots herself. She had lived in the United States most of her life, but when she drank, the accent became heavier.

She grabs your drink, taking a hold of the straw and consumes half of it in one go. If you didn’t love her, you would have ditched her years ago.

Pushing Ian out of the booth, you get up on wobbly feet and make the long twenty foot journey to the bar. “I’ll get my tequila myself. Thank you very much.” You tell the table.

It’s after midnight by the time you’re dropped off. Running a makeup remover cloth over your face and stripping down to a cami, you call it good enough and crawl into your cozy bed.

After a pit stop at Starbucks, you make it to the studio an hour earlier than you need to be. After parking in Timbuctoo, you graciously accept the golf cart ride from security.

One of the admins directs you to a small office down a long hallway with similar offices. There’s a laptop computer, various pens and notepads on the desk. You unpack a small plant you picked up yesterday after you dragged your hungover self out of bed and to the grocery store for food. There was no window in your office which you figured; a little greenery would liven the place up, literally.

An hour later, one of the producers, David, came by to introduce himself and walk you around the grounds and through the soundstage you’d be shooting on. Filming would take place on the soundstage for a little more than a month. Then everyone would move the whole operation to Vancouver. The movie was called Winter’s Sin after all and there wasn’t a whole lot of winter in Los Angeles.

Before stopping back in your office, David popped into the office across from yours. He knocked while walking in, apparently already comfortable with the occupant.

“Hey Monica. I want you to meet Y/N. She’s the assistant script supervisor I was telling you about.”

Assistant? What?

Monica got up from her chair to greet you. You plastered on a smile and stuck out your hand. She was around your age and seriously gorgeous. Beautiful thick brown hair with a touch of caramel highlights that hung just above her chest.

“Hi, Y/N. I’m looking forward to working with you. Would love to hear some of your ideas.”

“Same.”

What could you say? You weren’t told that you were an assistant script supervisor, you thought you had the position. Apparently, it was a shared position.

“Y/N will be working primarily with Chris and Keanu.”

Whoa. Well, at least there’s that.

Monica scoffs. “Really?”

Your eyes automatically go to her left hand. No ring. Of course.

“Yes, really. You’ve got Maggie. I think she can really flourish under your direction. Not to mention you have Hector, Tim, Daisy and Joe.

After the awkward exchange, you traded cellphone numbers with her and made plans to meet after the first read through with the cast.

Walking across the way into the safety of your office, you figured you might as well ask.

“I wasn’t aware that I was being hired on as an assistant script supervisor.”

David ran a hand down his face. “Y/N, listen. This is your first big film; you need to walk before you can run. Alright? If this goes well, you’ll probably get hired on as the lead.”

“Okay.” You sighed out

“Alright, I’ll see you later. Meeting at three on the soundstage.”

“Got it.” You replied, plopping yourself down in the desk chair.

David peeks his head back into your office. “You’ve got some visitors.”

“Thanks.” You call out, standing back up and pulling your door open wider.

Your heart stopped. At least you were pretty sure it did. Keanu and Chris were both in front of you. Yes, you were there to film a movie, but this felt like a freaking movie. The two of them, side by side, grins on their faces. Keanu’s hand outstretched while Chris’ hands were snugly in the front pockets of his jeans.

“Y/N, pleasure to meet you. I’m Keanu.”

You accept his hand but your pretty much speechless. You may have muttered “hi” but you can’t be sure. Sensing your nervousness, he gives you a smile and releases your hand. He looks to Chris and they exchange a silent conversation. Chris steps forward offering you his hand and once again you can’t breathe.

Has he always been this attractive? Apparently, I haven’t watched enough Avengers movies.

His hair’s a bit longer than what you remember from the one or two movies you’ve seen. He’s also sporting a full beard. Definitely something he can pull off.

You mentally slap yourself and pull your hand from his after you realize you hadn’t said anything.

“Um. Sorry. Haven’t had enough caffeine today. It’s nice to meet you both. I look forward to working with you on this shoot.”

“Nice plant.” Keanu says, pointing at the fern taking up the front corner of your desk.

You giggle. Like actually let out a giggle and you’re pretty sure your cheeks are flushed.

You’re a professional. Get your shit together.

“Well, you know?” Shrugging your shoulders. “Need to green the space up a bit.’

Chris nods his head and offers a closed mouth smile.

“Well, we won’t take up all your time. Just wanted to say hello.”

“Hello.” You reply with a wave.

Why am I so awkward?!

They both chuckle and Chris waves back at you.

Tomorrow you wouldn’t be so starstruck. These are just two men that you work with. Who cares that they both seem nice and are dangerously attractive? You’re an “engaged” woman who is also a professional. You can do this.

Yeah. I can do this.

Game Review — Paper Mario: The Origami King

It’s not a secret that I’m not a huge fan of Mario. Though I’ve played various Mario games almost since I first started playing video games in general (though never with dedication, and my first actual video game was the very first Sonic the Hedgehog), for me Mario games have always been okay, or decent, but not something I’d play at length aside from spin-offs like Mario Kart or Party. The exceptions were 64 and Odyssey, and the only one of those I actually liked and didn’t play just because I was bored out of my skull was 64. Needless to say, I tend to keep scrolling when I see an announcement dedicated to Mario.

Nonetheless, the newest Mario—or rather, Paper Mario—piqued my interest.

Overall Score: 8/10

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this game. It wasn’t one that I was dying to get back to every single day, but it was one that I enjoyed playing every day that I did play it nonetheless, and I was actually a little sad when it ended and almost went for 100% completion just to keep playing it. I didn’t end up doing that (though maybe I’ll go back at some point, who knows), but I did enjoy what time I had with it nonetheless. More details beneath the cut, better viewed on my blog due to ugly dash formatting.

The Pros:

The dialogue was probably the most enjoyable part to me. Everything was coated with a glib tone that made it clear the writers weren’t taking this too seriously, which is precisely what Mario games need. Games like Odyssey that clearly take themselves seriously (or at least more seriously than not) tend to fall flat to me. Mario is a bright, colorful fantasy series that is at its best when it’s clearly having fun and being silly, and that’s what the dialogue in this game was. Even the unnamed NPCs had personality and were fun to talk to, to the point where I didn’t even mind rescuing Toads the same way I did Koroks in my favorite game of all time, Breath of the Wild. I even outright laughed at points, such as when some Goombas said they had to “take the L” because they were saved by Mario. The dialogue really enhanced the whole experience.

To that end, the characters themselves were pretty great. I LOVE Olivia, and did pretty much right from the start, but I was surprised at how even characters that I felt were annoying at first wormed their way into my heart (BOBBY). While not all of the partners were memorable (looking at you, Toad partners), there were more memorable ones than not, and while the characterization wasn’t super deep, this is a Mario game. They don’t need to be super deep. They were good for what they were.

I really love the Paper Mario art style and how much work goes into showing how much of the world is just that—paper. I also love bright colors in games, so of course that was a plus as well. On top of which, each of the different areas had a distinct style, so the world didn’t ever feel same-y at any point, which was another plus in its favor.

Some of the music was really good! I’d even venture to say that most of it was. Again, it’s not something I’d necessarily buy an OST of, but there were some definite bops that I enjoyed while playing, which is another departure from other Mario games (such as Odyssey) that I didn’t enjoy nearly as much.

The Neutrals:

The story was . . . okay. That’s the best way to put it. There wasn’t that much to it and it didn’t make too much sense (in that Olly’s villainous motivations weren’t really convincing), but it’s a Mario game so, again, I’m not exactly looking for narrative excellence here. It created a reason for Mario to go on an adventure with Olivia, and that was enough for me. I enjoyed it in that respect. That said, I will say that I enjoyed it less when the game didn’t give enough time to its emotional beats, which is particularly noticeable when the characters move on pretty quickly after a character death and barely ever speak of it again. Again, it’s a Mario game and so I wasn’t too bothered, but it still stuck out, particularly since the characters were one of the game’s strong points.

The office supplies bosses sure were something. Honestly I’m putting them here because I don’t entirely know how to feel about them. On the one hand, they had interesting and fun characterizations, and the boss fights weren’t that bad insofar as how fights in this game typically are (more on that later), Rubber Band aside. On the other, it’s never explained why these are 3D objects that aren’t made out of paper, or why they’ve decided to serve Olly instead of just, I don’t know, destroying him as well, or where they even came from. And like, it’s a Mario game, it doesn’t need to be that deep, but it’s also kind of hard not to think about. That said, props to the game devs for making the fights against them creative even when the “designs” of the bosses really were not. That did impress me.

The Cons:

BREAKABLE. WEAPONS. I—okay, I get the idea of breakable weapons in Breath of the Wild because there are so many weapons everywhere and making it so that you can fight with literally anything (or almost anything) enhances the experience. Finding a rusted sword on a battlefield from a century ago and fighting with it will help you in a pinch, but it won’t last long. That makes sense. I can also understand (even if I hate and do not agree with) tools breaking in Animal Crossing: New Horizons because they wanted to put emphasis on the DIY crafting mechanic of the game. But there is NO EXCUSE for weapons breaking in Paper Mario. NONE. You can’t craft them. They’re not littering the ground. It’s just arbitrary . . . I don’t even want to say difficulty, because it’s not hard given that you can change weapons mid-battle. It’s arbitrary annoyance. Nintendo is really stuck on this whole “weapons breaking” shtick and I do not like it at all.

To that end, honestly I didn’t enjoy the puzzle aspects of the battle system at all, either. Sometimes it wasn’t so bad, but the thing is, visual pattern recognition / puzzles like that aren’t my strong suit. Put with a timer, and it’s even worse. You can extend the time by paying coins, but the added pressure still got to me and made me even worse at solving the puzzles than I would have been otherwise. Couple this with the fact that it got really repetitive and boring after a while, and I just wasn’t a fan.

I won’t go into spoilers, but the ending felt kind of contrived to me, like a Diabolos Ex Machina. The relationship between Olly and Olivia is one that was made really weird due to a plot twist that didn’t need to be there, and using said twist as a reason for a character death at the end feels like cheap drama for no reason (/an excuse to never see that character again), particularly since it easily could have been worded differently so that the death didn’t happen at all.

All in all, though, I really did enjoy it and would be interested in future Paper Mario games. If they ever decide to give us a Virtual Console on Switch (unrealistic at this point, I know), I’d like to see the older Paper Mario games put on there so I could play those, too. (Yes, I know I could either bust out old consoles and/or pirate them, but honestly, I’m not dedicated enough for either of those things.) The Nintendo of America twitter did a poll a little while ago asking which Mario people liked best, and I was said that Paper was not one of the options, because at this point, Paper Mario is definitely my favorite Mario.

Game of Thrones: The Verdict

I really liked it

The last season…sucked

I’m now a little less fed up with the comparisons of Black Sails to GOT. Obviously Black Sails is superior to GOT and also every other show in the world, but the reason they get compared isn’t just that they’re both dark-’n’-edgy shows with lots of sex set in an old-timey world. Well, maybe that is the main reason people compare them, but it’s not the only reason to compare them. They actually have a lot of the same themes. How do you change society? Is it even possible? How much bloodshed is acceptable in the service of a good cause? How does injustice get upheld? How and why does society vilify inconvenient people? What’s the point of stories? I kinda want to do some comparison gifsets one day…

More on this later probably, but I feel like the terrible writing of Daenerys’ arc mirrors the terrible writing of Morgana’s arc on Merlin.

I’m positively reeling from how many main characters were killed off in the last season. I would guess that the first seven seasons averaged maybe…four main character deaths per season? Five? But in the six episodes of season eight, we lose nine main characters: Jaime, Cersei, Daenerys, Jorah, Missandei, Varys, Theon, Melisandre, and the Hound. It’s like the writers had too many characters to deal with and figured the easiest way to deal with having to wrap up so many characters’ arcs was to kill as many as possible.

Watching the finale was super interesting because I had actually seen it already. I watched it when it first aired, despite not having seen the rest of the show except the first couple episodes back in 2011. The thing that stood out to me most the first time was that the finale was a lot happier than I expected. Which I still think is great! It’s great to end on a not-entirely-bleak note! It’s nice that almost every main character who survives gets some kind of comfort in the end. (Basically everyone but Grey Worm. Which is not a great look.) But it doesn’t feel very satisfying when it comes at the end of so much that sucked. Sam announcing that the chronicle of the wars is called “A Song of Ice and Fire”? Taken by itself, that’s cute and fun! But in context, I see why some people rolled their eyes. It only worked in LOTR because all three LOTR movies were actually good. In GOT, it’s an attempt at fanservice that fails because it wasn’t earned.

(You know what attempt fanservice didn’t fail? Podrick becoming a knight. THAT was earned.)

I think the thing is that despite the superficial happiness of most of the surviving characters…it’s just that. Superficial. Thematically, the show is pretty bleak, what with all the characters who don’t get to rise above their struggles and forge their own story (Jaime, Grey Worm, Daenerys, the Hound). How are we supposed to break the wheel if we can’t even break out of our own worst tendencies? :/

Oh, the other thing that stood out to me about the finale when I first watched it was that Bran won the game of thrones when I had assumed he died long ago because I never heard fandom talk about him. It was honestly pretty hilarious to hear Tyrion say that Bran had the best story out of everybody when I couldn’t think of a single thing I’d heard about that story after the first season. I wondered what Tyrion was referring to…and now, having watched the whole show, I’m still wondering. I mean, I know Tyrion was referring to Bran being the Three-Eyed Raven, but…that’s so BORING! Bran, by his own admission, isn’t Bran anymore! Why should I care about a magical seer more than characters who are actually interesting as people? What kind of leadership skills has the 3ER shown, anyway? The thing is, I really liked Bran back when he was himself! But I don’t know him anymore :(

(Also, what on earth was the point of christening him “Bran the Broken”?! If Bran himself used that name, I would get it. It would go back to the advice Tyrion gave Jon back in s1: proudly claim the aspect of your identity that society disparages, such as being a bastard or a dwarf. But, uh, Bran never called himself broken. It’s like D&D wrote the finale and then were like “hmm, this isn’t offensive enough.)

On the positive side, I’ve never seen a show or movie that does battle scenes as well as GOT. Battle scenes can get boring once the excitement of people hacking at each other wears off, but the GOT episodes that were all or mostly battle sequences, like Hardhome and Battle of the Bastards, were some of the most compelling episodes of the show. They didn’t just provide action, they provided plot.

Favorite Character: Jon, followed closely by Sansa. I love characters who are extremely angsty and always want to do the right thing but have a lot of regrets because they live in a world where it’s often nearly impossible to determine what’s right.

Best performance: Alfie Allen, who invented acting in the scene in I think s4 where “Reek” has to “pretend” to be “Theon.”

Overall grade: Yeah there were a lot of things that sucked, but like, still, A-. I know that looks weird given all the negativity in this post, but it’s easier to explain what I disliked than what I liked.

So someone asked a screenwriter (you know someone who is paid to write them) what they thought about the writing of season 8. To all those complaining about how the writing was terrible. Yes he is one screenwriter, but there are most like lots of writers like this who actually understood the story being told. I have my gripes with season 8 (namely Jon and his two lines he entire season)

I love his line “those writers will always know more about GoT that’s any audience will”

I’m a big GoT fan and a working screenwriter, so I always watch the show from both sides of he table - fan and writer.

I envision where I would like the series to go, based on my favorite and least favorite characters. And I see where the story IS going from a storytelling perspective.

With that said, here’s my take.

The scripts for Season 8 were excellent. With a six-episode season, the writers kind of broke this into a six-act structure. In general story structure, there’s usually a false climax in the middle. Or the showcase of outside character desires… the want… and in this case, that outside desire/goal was to defeat the white walkers. But at this point, that battle was set up to be that false climax. Where we AND the characters think the story should end.

So when Episode 3 came, which was the battle with the white walkers, and almost every major characters survived unscathed, many fans were complaining that GoT had lost it’s edge. They pointed to the Red Wedding where the dearest of characters (Rob and his mother) were slaughtered as an example.

As a screenwriter (and fan), I was shaking my head at these complaints.

“You guys don’t realize what’s coming. It’s a false climax. It’s the middle of a six-part act. Shit is about to hit the fan. They’re just building the tension. The characters realize that their outside desire is false. Their inside desire, to win the game of thrones, is now at hand.”

The show was never Game of White Walkers. It was Game of Thrones.

And to skip ahead, the final two episodes were brilliantly written in my eyes. If you didn’t see the fall of Dany coming, you weren’t paying attention to her whole arc throughout the series, as well as her families past.

I knew Dany would go mad. I knew awhile back. The signs were there. I did think that she’d try to kill Jon (or have him killed) onscreen, but it was implied instead. Which works. If you didn’t think Dany was going to do that after watching her eyes when Jon told her the truth and she realized that she was no longer the heir to the throne, then again, you weren’t paying attention.

Update: (inspired by and taken from my reply to Sean Hood’s awesome perspective) Regarding the sudden twist of Dany slaughtering the innocent. I didn’t think it was so out of the blue. Didn’t they show her ruthlessness in prior seasons? Sure, it was often directed to the rich, slave owners, etc. But ruthless nonetheless. I saw madness in her. When she executed the Tarlys for refusing to bend the knee to her. They had already surrendered. To me, I watched her obsessed with power, obsessed with the throne, etc. I saw her slowly become unhinged season by season.

Even when she freed people it was clear that she didn’t know how to rule because keeping the peace was always an issue. And that’s where I wonder if THAT is why she slaughtered the people of King’s Landing. She was never able to keep the peace of the liberated cities.

So if she kills everyone, there’s no one to defy her. There are no numbers to uprise. That’s the LOGICAL part of her choice maybe. And the madness was that coin flip aspect of her family.

Skipping back now, Episode 2 is my favorite GoT episode of all time. When all of these characters we love are preparing for war. The quiet before the storm. A Lady being knighted. Etc. Brilliant. The best character moments of the series by far. The culmination of ALL of the character arcs as they come together.

And the battle with white walkers? To me, the darkness added to the suspense. That’s what it would have been like, no? But for my TV, it wasn’t that bad.

And the final episode? The last moment/visual of the table dealing with the average day-to-day rule of a kingdom… brilliant.

Here’s the thing. No great series ends well for all because nobody wants it to end. Sopranos, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, etc. No one was going to be satisfied and even if the writers did what the majority of fans wanted, they’d be strung up critically for being overly conventional or for taking no real chances by doing the obvious.

GoT and its writers did the series right by doing what THEY envisioned. It’s not writers’ story, not the fans. Love it or hate it or be indifferent. It’s their story to tell. The moment you cater to the crowd (which is impossible because everyone has their own subjective opinion, wants, desires) is the moment you sell out.

And the moment you observe what the fans want and just do the opposite to surprise them or prove their theories wrong (looking at you Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi), despite the mythos you or someone else has created before you, is the moment you are overly self-aware in your writing. It’s almost worse than catering the audiences.

If you didn’t like it, that’s perfectly fine. It’s a subjective medium.

But don’t call for a redo by putting out a petition. Don’t state that the writing was horrible either. Those writers know more about GoT than audiences ever will.

Jon didn’t want the throne. He felt best among the wildlings.

Arya was lost and alone since the day she watched her father die. She became a wanderer of life.

Sansa wanted to rule a kingdom.

The Hound wanted to defeat his brother.

Tyrion wanted to serve the people and do right by his otherwise tainted family name.

Brienne wanted people to see her as the honorable and loyal knight she was, beyond being a woman with a sword.

Jaime Lannister wanted to be with his true love, despite that love being forbidden and a hidden embarrassment.

ALL of these character arcs were served in this final season. Many thanks to the writers that delivered closure in a no-win situation after creating one of the greatest and most celebrated shows of all time.

Note: My single dislike of the last episode was the whole angle of Grey Worm and his Unsullied holding Tyrion and Jon as prisoners.

There should have been a moment between Jon and Grey Worm. An epic sword battle. With either both of them dying by the other’s sword or Grey Worm dying. Or Jon making his case during the fight, showing how Dany had gone mad with power, and then Grey Worm relenting, saying, “I loved her.” Meaning his love that was executed.

And THEN the leaders of the realm meet up and choose a new King.

But that’s just the writer and fan in me. It’s not my story. I’m just an audience member. We can’t expect writers to be at the beck and call of the fan base. It would hinder otherwise great writing.

And the writers of GoT never, never lost the heart and spirit of the show. George Lucas arguably lost what was so special about the original Star Wars trilogy when he made the prequels. The prequels didn’t honor that heart and spirit. Instead, the writing relied on slapstick humor, CG effects, and demystified mystery of the Jedi, etc (midichlorians, superhero abilities, etc.).

GoT NEVER jumped the shark in that respect. If the writers had come into Season 8 with a lot of odd slapstick moments, tone shifts, and overly self-aware writing (The Last Jedi for all three of those as well), then, yeah, there should be an uproar.

But that wasn’t the case here with GoT.

Well done, writers! From one writer (and fan) to another.

Welcome to another episode of “Lillpon projects and overanalyzes things because she didn’t like 7x18″

[Edit: I realized the first four paragraphs aren’t needed to pass my point through, but they give a lot of context why the specific point I talk in the rest of the post hits too close to home.]

So in the first years of elementary school I had this friend who looked down on me. Once she asked me to bring her a nail polish I’d worn, and I genuinely forgot to bring it to her every day so she would “force” me to play with her. And we were like, 9, and that was only one aspect of how she subtly acted like she was superior over me, and that I’d have to fall at her feet and do everything she’d ask in order to be her friend. She completely rejected me as a friend one year later and I haven’t spoken to her since elementary school.

Fast forward 7 years, I’m in high school and I’m the typical person to copy from in an exam, to the point of students who would otherwise make fun of me would ask to copy in an exam - and being an awkward, self-deprecating girl who had spent whole years without friends, I didn’t really object to it. It made me feel useful. Until there was one exam during a day where I was in a very bad mood, and I very emphatically refused to let someone copy from me. The very first friend I’d made in like, all those years, got angry with my behaviour (it wasn’t even her that I’d refused) and didn’t speak to me for a whole week, until I sat down and talked to her, and I cried and apologized to her.

Again, that was only one instance. She wasn’t as obviously problematic as my earlier “friend” was, but there was a time where... it’s a lot to explain but it any case it boiled down to me crying again, in public, and dragging myself on metaphorical dirt to apologize to her. And she seemed to believe I deserved doing that to myself to deserve her forgiveness. I haven’t spoken to her since school ended, and I don’t intend to.

In my childhood I felt indebted to those two girls. I felt like I had to drop my head and accept things I didn’t like in order to be their friend. But there were also other things keeping us together - school, games, same neighborhood, same interests with the first, and again school, teen girl talk etc. with the second. Things that weren’t enough to keep our friendship together, however, once school ended for good. And when those things faded out, I saw that their behaviour was very, very wrong.

And here comes the projecting, and here comes me looking at 7x18 and going like What the Actual Fuck.

Friendships can’t be based on emotional debts. They can start with or involve one, but they need more juice to develop into a healthy relationship that makes both parties happy. Friends talk about stuff. Friends support each other, they give and take. They do stuff that can hold their relationship together, emotional debt or not.

Killian and Rumpelstiltskin were literally written as pure foils. One is a chaotic, fuck-the-system rebel, the other is a lawful, powerful magician who feels weak if he doesn’t weild power over others. And those are not their fatal flaws they get over, like their self-hatred or obsessions. Those things are core characteristics they both carried for literal centuries, written in their characters specifically to emphasize their differences.

Not to mention the whole Milah thing.

So what was there, besides the debt Killian said he owed to him, that would keep their “friendship” together? Heck, what do we see of non-cursed Killian Jones acting as a friend to Rumpelstiltskin, or vice versa? Nothing.

It’s after the curse, after Killian is literally forced into a lawful, eager-to-please role that he acts friendly towards the guy who, to his knowledge, the worst thing he did was lie to him in order to protect him. Rumpelstiltskin talks about how Killian’s deep determination was why he chose Rogers as his partner, but we never find out why Rogers was happy to work with Weaver. Rogers was just someone eager to please who, as I explained in my view about 7x09, wasn’t even given any reason to trust Weaver, yet offered to help.

There was never anything in it for Rogers. Literally the only times someone helped him were Tilly in 7x06, Roni in 7x08 when she nudged him to give Tilly a second chance, Tilly again in 7x13 when she tried to warn him against opening up to Eloise about the painting, in 7x19 when she risked everything to save his life...

That’s it. Here’s why I hate the stretcher scene in 7x20 with the power of a thousand suns, btw. Killian/Rogers never got any emotional payback from becoming Rumpelstiltskin’s friend/Weaver’s partner. The latter specifically says that the white elephant was for Alice. Their whole relationship is based on a debt; Killian feeling grateful that Rumpelstiltskin didn’t burden Alice with eternal life (which is another can of worms, but let’s not go there right now).

There’s never anything in it for Killian, and there’s nothing in common between those two to base a true, healthy friendship upon. So... what gives?

I know that similar things can be said for CS in s5 and s6... but the thing is, Killian didn’t start with owing a debt to Emma. They saw a kindred spirit in each other and fell in love. True, some unresolved issues appeared after, but to me they don’t really matter because the base of their relationship was how similar they were but also how they complemented each other. CS could still stand whether there was an emotional debt or not.

Golden Hook was literally based only on the emotional debt Killian felt he owed to Rumpelstiltskin, and the respect the latter had for the former was only because Killian was tied to Alice. It is a) totally ridiculous, b) unhealthy, and c) totally shitting on Killian’s character, just because the writers couldn’t spend enough time redeeming Rumpelstiltskin from the hell hole they’d been dragging him in for three years straight so they decided to strip Killian of any and all decency in other to show that Wow Rumpelstiltskin is Good Now We Are Such Proffesional Writers.

And the problem is, due to how it was presented, Rumpelstiltskin fans lost their minds - and understandably so. Only in the context of his character, it’s good, it’s rich, it’s fulfilling.

But for someone like me, who never gave a single fuck for him as a good guy, and instead cared only for Killian... it fell so, so fucking unfair.

The 100 Highlights - “Acceptable Losses” (5x07)

Hey guys!

I’m back to do my highlight recap of episode 5x07, “Acceptable Losses”, written by Jeff Vlaming. I am really happy to say that I enjoyed this episode a significant amount more than I did the previous one, and I’m really excited to dig into it with this post.

“She was shot, Marcus. Octavia Blake killed her - not me.”

^ Okay so I want to start of this post by talking about this line from Abby because I honestly think its really important. The fact that Kane was sort of implying that Abby was responsible for that girls death was really rubbing me the wrong way because, like, yes: maybe, if Abby was well, she would have been able to save the girl. But you can’t get a drug addict to fix themselves just by asking them to. And you can’t expect them to be able to fix other people too. As much as Abby may want to stop, that’s not how it works. I don’t think anyone should be blaming Abby for the death of that girl. It shouldn’t have even been Abby’s responsibility to treat her, to be honest. Jackson is a doctor, too. And he’s in a way better condition to handle that kind of situation at the moment. Obviously they wanted Abby because they can use drugs to get her to do what they want, but it doesn’t seem right for Kane to put that guilt on Abby’s shoulders.

It just reminded me so much of Abby saying to Raven in 4x03 that the radiation wasn’t killing that child - she was. It’s not true. Raven didn’t kill that girl, and Abby didn’t kill this one. It was Octavia.

Also I know everyone’s having fun hating on Kabby this season but I must have missed the memo cause I don’t really know why y’all hate it so much

“Funny, that’s the same thing we said about getting back down to the ground. And then we found you.”

LISTEN. I don’t know why y’all were hating on Bellamy for “shooting Octavia down” in this scene. The way she was talking to him in this scene absolutely SCREAMED manipulation to me. I was so happy when he said this to her - like, we’ve been waiting for seasons for him to stand up to Octavia, and finally he is. It’s a lot better than him just sitting there in silence, taking whatever she was probably about to throw at him once she had his sympathy and compliance.

Also, WHAT A DRAG. This writer has all the one-liners, damn. There was so much sass in this episode - I really enjoyed that aspect of it.

Okay, I REALLY love that they brought back Jasper’s suicide letter again in this episode. It was just SO important. So easily they forget about characters who have died on this show and what they meant to the people who are still alive, and I’m happy that that doesn’t seem to be the case with Jasper and Monty. Jasper’s presence in this episode felt like the callback this season needed - it helped me feel a lot more connected to the show, and to the characters. It was a well-needed reminder of the heart of this show and what it’s about.

Also, it is absolutely necessary to give ALL the kudos to Tree Adams for the work he has done this season (and especially in this episode). It’s crazy how much that man has managed to emote with his music. His presence on the crew of this show has served to elevate it in every single way. When I heard “The Awakening” being played over the scenes revolving Jasper ... it was A Lot fam. I think it is the most tragic and beautiful song that they have done on The 100 and it is also very deeply linked to Jasper as a character and everything that he went through. I love that, even though that song is from Season 3, they have continued to bring it back for both Season 4 and 5. It shows that they remember where they came from, and the journey that has brought us to this moment.

It Just Means A Lot.

Actually, everything to do with Monty and Clarke in this episode was INCREDIBLE. Man, I really felt their dynamic. They connected so well and it just made me really emotional. They used to be such a team ... Before. It’s nice to see that they can click back into that place so quickly again. Them teaming up ... it almost felt like old times.

“Monty, you can’t pick a lock with pruning sheers.” “Ye hath little faith.”

Thanks to this post here I am now aware that this is exactly what Monty said to Jasper in 2x07 when they were trying to unlock another door and Now I’m Sad (and yet also really happy that they put so much care and detail into this episode?).

Monty was just amazing this episode - like damn he’s so smart. He’s such an undercover badass. We don’t appreciate him enough.

I have to hand it to the writers with this one cause I really did NOT see that worm thing coming lmao. I was SO sure that we were about to get a cannibalism reveal and I’m pretty sure the writers are well-aware of that. They were having fun with us.

But on another note, I’m actually really happy that they brought the worms into the story. Otherwise, 5x05 would have pretty much just been a filler episode with no real significance. But, in doing this, they’ve made it so that episode is even more relevant than we thought. AND WOW WHAT A FUCKING TERRIFYING WAY TO DO SO.

BELLAMY AND MONTY AND CLARKE HAVING A CHAT JUST LIKE OLD TIMES WOW I’M EMO

We can’t forget they were the OG murder trio of 2x16 i love three pals bonded through the blood of their enemies

“Be diplomatic.” “Get out.” “Real diplomatic.” I LOVE TWO (2) COMEDIANS WOW BELLARKE REALLY HAS ME SHOVED STRAIGHT UP THEIR ASS HUH

“Clarke, he was there when Pike shot her and killed 300 of her people.” I know everyone is really mad about this line but on rewatch I noticed that they changed this line from the script so that it puts the blame for the massacre on Pike’s shoulders rather than Bellamy’s and while I do think it was a bit of an awkward placement, I appreciate that they changed the line so it didn’t feel like such a punch in the face.

Also, Clarke’s pause and then “I’ll go with him”? Peak comedy. I love a woman.

“When I was a kid, after the battle of San Francisco, I watched the evacuation on TV. Thousands of refugees being packed into aircraft carriers. I remember seeing soldiers pushing helicopters overboard just to make more room, and Diyoza was there. She was the one giving the orders. The machines were expendable, but the people weren’t. But up in space, when we reported that the miners were getting sick, Eligius saw it differently. Order Eleven came down: ‘Bring home the Hythylodium, leave the prisoners.’ Like they were garbage. Captain Stevens agreed and I didn’t.”

There’s something so compelling about the way Jordan Bolger delivers his lines. It reminds me of him talking to Clarke in 5x03 - I could listen to him talk about his backstory for hours. When he speaks he just has a way of captivating the audience. And also CHARMAINE DIYOZA WAS A MFING WAR HERO AND I WON’T HEAR ANYTHING ELSE. Damn, she continues to be the absolute best.

“So you see, Diyoza’s not as bad as you think and I’m not as good as you hoped.” WHAT A FUCKING LINE.

I am living for Zeke’s character and his relationship with Raven is so intriguing. Jordan and Lindsey have such great chemistry.

“An honest spy is either incompetent or working an angle. Which are you?” CHARMAINE TRULY CAME FOR HER LIFE GOD SHE’S SO SAVAGE I LOVE A WOMAN

“Karina died because her doctor was too high to operate.” “Really? And here I thought it was the bullet.” THANK. YOU.

The way Charmaine calls Kane out in this scene really just made me want to like, pump a fist or something, lmao. When he’s like “maybe it would be a good way to get rid of some of these ...” and she says, “What, Kane? Undesirables?” I. FELT. THAT.

“Kind of like sending 100 juvenile delinquents to die on the ground. Or abandoning 300 prisoners on an asteroid?” You know, I really didn’t expect Charmaine - of all people - to bring back this old argument from Season 1 but I WAS SO HAPPY THAT SHE DID. Say what you will about Diyoza but she’s nothing if not loyal. She’s not here to abandon her troops and she’s not willing to discard any of them - just like she wasn’t willing to abandon any of those refugees. The fact that she’s so open to allowing defectors into the camp at all, that she is feeding them, giving them shelter, actually sitting down to have chats with them is just so ... uncharacteristic of a “villain”? And I love it.

“Trust her? She’s a drug addict. ... Too soon?”

Literally me, every time Diyoza opens her mouth:

Got to take a short second to say again how interested I am to see how this whole Gaia/Madi plotline is going to play out, now that we know that she is actually here to keep her safe. It’s such an interesting dynamic, with her being so close to Octavia.

I know a lot of people are annoyed that the flame is still part of the show but honestly, I think it makes a lot of sense (considering Madi’s position as a nightblood) and plays a lot more interesting of a role now that the time of the Commander’s is supposedly over and their faith has been destroyed ... almost. In any case, I’m pretty sure that the flame will be gone for good by the end of this season because I think that whatever happens with Madi and Octavia’s reign and Wonkru is going to lead to its destruction, but in the meantime I really don’t mind it being part of the story.

I have to talk about the scene where Gaia shows her the flame because I LOVE how it was filmed. The music was so eery and fit the mood perfectly, and the fucking whispers??? We’ve never actually seen how a real, living nightblood reacts to the flame and I think it’s actually super cool that Madi can feel a bond to it - it was literally beckoning to her. It was giving me major Lord of the Rings vibes.

And wow, Lola really killed that scene. You can clearly see the way her emotions are creating inner turmoil for her. She’s been hiding from the flame since birth and yet she also cannot deny the draw that she feels towards it (again, like Frodo with the ring). Lola has such a potential as a little actress - I’m really excited to see where she goes.

Side note but ... who’s going to tell these writers no one actually refers to their sibling as “big brother” just casually?

“There are times in war where you have to do the wrong things for the right reasons.” And I’m sure this is exactly how Echo justified every single thing she did pre-Praimfaya too. I have to admit that I actually liked what they did with Echo this episode just because it shows that she still has areas that require growth. Her priorities and loyalties changed up on the Ark but she has yet to be truly tested. This is her test, to see how much those six years really changed her. If this episode is an indication, her instinct is still to fall back into old habits during times of war. I’m optimistic that what this means is we are going to get to see Echo have real development, on-screen, this season.

Monty reading Jasper’s letter ... I Am Not Okay.

Again, loved all the callbacks to Jasper in this episode. It’s really interesting that his character arc has carried over from Season 3/4 and seems to have reinvented itself in Monty now. I’m hopeful that Monty isn’t going to go down the self-destructive path that Jasper went down, but that he might actually use Jasper’s memory to pave the path towards real change. We rarely get characters who want to end the fighting rather than continue it - I’m interested to see where Monty’s character arc goes as the season progresses.

“Jasper was smarter than all of us [...] If the war is the only way to have the last survivable land on Earth, then maybe we don’t deserve it.” He’s not wrong ...

LISTEN INDRA THIS SEASON IS EVERYTHING. She’s one of the few characters who is not afraid to call out Octavia on the way that she is leading. She can see so clearly through Blodreina’s bullshit and yet she loves Octavia despite it. That’s Strength.

LISTEN. The reveal of Diyoza being pregnant LITERALLY made me gasp. Out loud. I literally jumped off of my couch and cheered. I am SO excited about this reveal. I didn’t think they were going to actually use the fact that that Ivana was pregnant during filming in the show because they had her taking tequila shots in 5x05 (*sigh*) but I’m really happy that they decided to. It just adds a whole extra layer to Charmaine. She’s not just a leader - she’s a mother. And I do wonder at how that might affect Abby’s and Charmaine’s dynamic, because that’s one thing they both have in common.

Another reason I really liked that reveal was because I think Charmaine being pregnant gives her a higher chance of surviving this season. She still may die, but it’s a lot darker to kill off a character when they are carrying a baby inside of them than when they are not, and I know the CW has regulations on that kind of thing.

That being said, Karina was heavily implied to have been pregnant and she still died ... Although they did cut out the lines that explicitly stated she was pregnant from the script so maybe her death was why?

Anyway, I’m really excited about this plotline.

Raven looking at a beaten up Shaw with tears in her eyes ... this is the angst I live for. Man, I could get invested in this relationship. Not to mention, Zeke becoming one of the prisoners is SUPER intriguing. His role within Eligius is what kept him conflicted before, but if Eligius has rejected him too now, who will he become? What will he do to help Raven and the others? Right now, I’m sure he wants nothing to do with her but I know that won’t last forever and I’m really excited to see what they do with his character.

I know that Madi beating Ethan in that fight was a TERRIBLE idea but I’m really excited about it. Madi has surprised me as a character (in a good way) because she has so much of her own agency outside of Clarke. I think the story of her struggling with her hero-worship and glorification of Octavia versus her love and loyalty to Clarke is super interesting. She may be fucking everything up but she’s doing it on her own terms, and that’s exciting, because Madi easily could have been written in as a plot device to cause conflict between Clarke and her friends as well as within the Grounder system. Instead, the writers have given her flaws and strengths in her own right. She is way more fleshed out as a character than I was expecting going into Season 5 and I think this story with her and Octavia will be really interesting.

Also, I 100% predicted that Madi would be Octavia’s second in my spec masterpost months ago. In fact, a lot of my spec about Madi and Octavia has been taking shape pretty nicely so I’m really interested to see if the rest of my spec regarding that relationship follows through too ...

Clarke taking the radio and calling Diyoza just like she called Emerson in 2x16 ... damn. DAMN. Nice to see the return of “you may be the Chancellor, but I’m in charge”. She’s So Powerful.

BOOM. Out.

That was a KILLER episode. It took me forever to get through this recap because there were so many aspects of the episode that I really, really enjoyed. It hit all the right emotional beats, the music was on point, and the plot was super intriguing. It really feels like the story is picking up and I am SO excited to watch 5x08.

It’s going to be harder for me to keep on top of these recaps for the rest of the season as I’m going to be very busy (and I’m not even sure if I’ll be able to watch most of the episodes live) but I’ll do my best to get them all done. I can’t promise that they will all be completed in a timely fashion (before the next episode airs), as I have been doing them thus far, but I’ll try to get them done when I can!

Sam Rae Interview: Green Turns to Dust

“It’s their experimental record,” you say about so many classic artists, the common tale that they tone their traditional chops before venturing out into the realms of improvisation and loops. For Sam Rae, her upcoming record Ten Thousand Years (August 7th) represents the opposite journey. Her first two, 2014′s instrumental, improvised Stories From the Marrow and 2017′s heady Bring Us to New Islands, are drastically different than Years, a bonafide, lyrics-forward folk record born out of Rae’s experience as part of Brandi Carlile’s touring band. Carlile’s tour bus and band members provided Rae with an atmosphere to reflect and write, and as it turns out, she had a lot to say.

Ten Thousand Years is an album about all things Rae, from where she grew up (Iowa City) and where she moved (Santa Cruz, before relocating to Charleston, South Carolina a year ago), to her family and past and present loves, and growing up queer in the Midwest. Throughout, Rae remembers past events and hearing certain stories but is also baffled by the seeming unending nature of time and the world. Her interplay between feelings concrete and abstract is impressively balanced, especially for a first time writer-in-advance. (Ten Thousand Years is the first album on which Rae wrote the lyrics before recording the songs.) The involved personnel and sound, too, has expanded, perhaps to match the scope of Rae’s themes: Not only are we treated to Rae’s voice, guitar, and cello playing, but producer Jacob Hoffman’s french horn, piano, and 12-string Rickenbacker, Kendl Winter’s banjo, Dustin Busch’s hand-crafted lap steel, drummer Sean T. Lane’s homemade rhythm and atmosphere instrument, The Bike. Overall, though, Ten Thousand Years finds a way to hang on to bits and pieces of Rae’s experimentation. It’s two most ambitious tracks bookend it: “Intro”, initially improvised on organ while Rae’s father and fiancee played a game of pool, and “Dying Here”, the longest track on the album with tape and live delay.

I spoke to Rae over the phone last month, the day the album was announced and reverby lead single “Head Rush” premiered on Country Queer, and today, she’ll be doing her first streamed performance of the album’s material, at 6 PM CST on her Instagram. “It’s such a relief to hear it finally entering the world and coming out of my head...so much space is opening up!” she laughed. Of course, Rae is pining to do a real live show but is limited by COVID-19 (“What if I played on a dock and people could ride up on canoes?” she speculated), so for now, that open space will have to be limited to the mental realm. Ultimately, Rae doesn’t seem to be worried about what she can’t control, and to an extent, even the things she can. Life is large, and as she sings on “Colors of the Highway”, “I’m sure I’ll have the choice between remembered or forgotten / Either is fine by me.”

Since I Left You: Do you feel like Ten Thousand Years represented a big step for you from Bring Us to New Islands?

Sam Rae: Huge. I almost considered taking off my last two records completely. Just making them disappear. I didn’t want to get rid of them, per se, but just having this be my debut because it’s so different from my last two. I ultimately decided against it, because I basically wanted to leave a trail of breadcrumbs to how I got to where I am, which is not necessarily traditional. My first record was an improvised, looped cello concert. I recorded it live and released it. My second one is this ethereal, cello-looping, kind of synth-based record where I started to explore singing a little bit, but it was mostly focused around synth sounds and reverse cello loops. Lots of experimental stuff. This one is pretty much straight up folk. We recorded it to tape. The songs generally have structure. It’s kind of just landing in this more specific genre that just feels better. I was exploring all of this ethereal improvisational stuff for so long just because it was my comfort zone. Improvisational performance is always where I’ve been most comfortable. Writing these songs that are so lyrically exposed is this whole other can of worms. It’s less comfortable for me. But of course, I’m always drawn to the discomfort, so this is where I am. And it feels very right. I’ve finally found my...what’s the word...crevice, or...

SILY: Your niche?

SR: My niche! Or my identity in music that I’ll stick with from here on out, which feels really nice.

SILY: How long had you been writing lyrics or writing in general?

SR: I was already really into stream of consciousness journaling, but I always felt too vulnerable to have those lyrics be front and center. So in my second album, Bring Us To New Islands, I decided to include my lyrics a little bit, but I still definitely hid them behind these sonic textures and cello loops and what not. When I was writing that record, I was literally writing the lyrics to those songs as I was recording them. I would go in, and my producer would be like, “That sounds good,” or, “That sucks,” and I would go home and rewrite something. I was doing it on the fly. I was exploring that discomfort, I guess. That was another big step in the direction of where I am today. Really, to answer your question, the last three years, and especially the last two, particularly in 2018 when I was out with Brandi, I was using the adrenaline and the momentum I felt after shows with her, and I’d run straight to the bus after the show, lock the door, and get out my guitar. I wrote 60 percent of these songs on the back of that bus. She’s really dialed it in--just the level of writing and the music quality and her presence. I was just absorbing it all like a sponge, and I wanted to utilize that freshness of what I was seeing in front of me every night. It was fun to throw these songs together on the back of the bus. I finally had enough songs--6 or so--and thought to myself, “I should just write a record here!”

Writing to this extent is fairly fresh for me. The last two years, I’d say, writing in the form this record represents. Less ethereal.

SILY: You still find ways where you can use your voice instrumentally, but the lyrics are more front and center.

SR: Absolutely.

SILY: You mentioned Brandi and [Carlile’s twin-brother bandmates Phil and Tim Hanseroth] in your liner notes as providing an atmosphere where you could write. Was that just on tour?

SR: Definitely touring. Trading songs with Tim on the bus or the green room. He’d teach me a few little chords, and I’d go and do a song. Getting a few tips from Brandi here and there about my voice, and definitely taking that to heart. I was highly influenced by their writing on this record. I guess it just challenged me to rise to this level of writing I knew I could achieve. That’s cool just to have them as an example, as a bar.

SILY: You mentioned that you made “a folk record” with this one, though it still contains some of your more experimental tendencies. But in a sense, there are a couple aspects on here associated with traditional folk but maybe not “folk” as we think of it today: homemade instruments and field recordings. Both appear on "Intro”--even though it’s not a “field” and just a basement.

SR: Yeah, the “Intro” on my phone in my dad’s girlfriend’s basement. [laughs] Then, we threw some cello and vocals on top of it.

SILY: It almost lays the groundwork for the spirit of the record, with The Bike, the homemade instrument. It’s got a sense of time and place...is that your dad saying, “Turn it down, it hurts my ears!”

SR: Yeah. [laughs] He’s got hearing aids, so he’s a little more sensitive to sound now. I thought it was just very well-suiting that his voice pops in at the very beginning, like when you’re a kid: “Turn it down! Stop messing around, we’re playing pool. We’re trying to do this thing!” And I’m over there just cranking the organ. Then I keep playing, and you can kind of hear him pipe in one more time: “Turn it down!” I just keep going because I was recording on my phone. I was like, “Ooh, this is cool! I don’t know what I’ll do with it, but I don’t want to stop just because of my dad.” [laughs]

SILY: The record is called Ten Thousand Years, and on the title track, you individually go through each set of thousand years. What stuck out to me is you almost present the idea that time is more than what we perceive, when usually, people say the opposite, like, “It goes by so fast!” What’s the idea behind the record title and that track and how it relates to the whole album?

SR: Yeah, that’s a great question. I remember writing that song when I lived in Santa Cruz. I was just thinking about being in a partnership with somebody and how it just felt like every week or every day we were learning another aspect about one another. There’s a high possibility or likelihood we were never gonna learn fully everything. I was pondering that concept and definitely wrote that song in almost one go. Usually, I let it sit and go back and edit and change some lyrics to make it flow, but this one, it just kind of came out. In that song, I’m trying to address these tangible, nostalgic feelings I have for each portion in my life I can divide up into sections I’ve exposed. It gets to this point where it just becomes less tangible. Ten thousand years, and there’s more. There’s that bridge part where I’m just trying to be that ten thousand and one. It’s just based off of the concept that as humans, we’re a lot more complex that we can understand some days, and we can be hard on ourselves to that extent. Not being able to understand or be in control of certain aspects that are just human. Those are going to be there regardless of whether we have control or not. That’s kind of a long-winded version of it.

That theme threads itself through almost every song on the album, especially songs like “Waukee” and “Strangest Thing” and kind of delving into concepts of being present and losing family members and that life is just this kind of sometimes misunderstood thing, I guess. At least from my perspective, I catch myself trying to fully understand it and be completely in control. I have these glimpses of moments where I tell myself to let go of that aspect and realize it’s a lot bigger than myself.

SILY: You’re certainly wrestling with the tangible versus the non-tangible. “Strangest Thing” gets its title from the line, “It’s the strangest thing how the wind can blow but can’t be seen.” That line definitely stuck out to me. Another one is on “Colors of the Highway”, when you sing, “Taste the colors of the highway.” It’s like a certain form of synesthesia. You’re messing with the senses.

SR: Definitely. There’s this sort of ghost-like element to a lot of these songs that touch on things I can’t control or fully understand.

SILY: At the same time, are there any stories on the song that are inspired by or reference hyper-specific events? Like, on “Waukee”, did you really light the family car on fire with a cigarette? [“Oh, you lit the family car on fire with your dead end cigarette.”]

SR: [laughs] That’s a good point. It goes from that extreme of being a little ethereal to these super finite specific moments like that one, referring to my mom when she was a teenager lighting her family car on fire with cigarettes. She was in the car with her other siblings and one parent. I’m constantly fascinated by their stories and how they survived. That’s one of their stories, where she lights the car on fire and my grandpa walks out and just tells her to go inside and go to bed. That song, specifically, is very focused around my family and my mom’s side, specifically.

SILY: On the same song, you talk about “Something in our blood that we find so comforting.” Is that family for you in general?

SR: On my mom’s side, we’re really tight-knit, and we get together on a regular basis. At this point, it’s about 50 of us. She has lots of siblings, and they all have kids, and then they all have kids, and I value the fact that we get together on a regular basis. I value that. I was an only child, and my cousins were kind of my siblings.

SILY: Same here, actually!

SR: Yeah, nice! It’s cool. I always craved that connection to a sibling based off what I saw around me, but I definitely got some of that from my mom’s side of the family. The choruses of that song touch on watching my aunts and uncles pass away one by one. It’s a strange feeling. Every time that happens, there’s a shift in the whole family. It’s kind of rattling, and a large letting go. There’s lots of cancer on that side of the family, so it’s this inevitable shadow, almost. That song’s definitely very family-oriented.

SILY: This might be a stretch, or unintentional, but it reminds me of the saying, “My family is my rock,” and you used literal rocks on the percussion of that track.

SR: I didn’t ever think of that! I found a few unintentional things on this album that I didn’t necessarily mean to do but are cool. That’s one of them. I guess the draw to that rock sound is that textural feeling. Rather than only being a sound, it creates this texture like if you were crumpling sand in your hands. That definitely relates to my feelings around community and family. There’s almost this texture or nostalgia to it that I hold on to.

SILY: Can you tell me about the song “Delaine”?

SR: That tune, I wrote in Astoria, Oregon at the end of a solo run down the coast. I had had the name Delaine floating around my head for a few weeks, and I don’t know why or how it popped into my head. It was just kind of floating around and had no purpose other than to be a name. Then, I decided one day I would write a song about the state of Iowa and name her “Delaine” so I could almost sing to her as if she were a human, which might be kind of weird. [laughs] But it opened up the possibilities of me singing to a place--I could sing to it as if it were alive.

“Delaine” is a placeholder for Iowa, and it touches on my upbringing in Iowa, and coming out as gay in Iowa, and exploring my gender, doing drag, and it just felt so nice against the backdrop of what I felt at the time to be this mundane feeling that I was just becoming bored with the place to the point where I was like, “Get me out of here!” Of course, after I leave, I find myself laughing now about how much I missed it. But I was young and needing to get out and explore things and be in different communities. So it touched on a lot of that and just exploring my identity and a place that wasn’t necessarily surrounded my like-minded people, although Iowa City is pretty rad.

The chorus, I was thinking about just the other day, and I was thinking kind of related to this feeling of screaming into an empty field--my mom used to take me out to an empty cornfield to just scream into the top of my lungs. I would do that, and it was this great release and always felt like the cornfields were there to hold it, hold the scream, or just be simple and calm. So I wrote those choruses, and in a sense, to kind of relate to that feeling of this spacious calm and the ability to release in the midst of that.

SILY: “The prairie fields of rural love.”

SR: Uh huh. This super expansive chorus gives me that same sense of relief as when I would go out and scream into a field. Overall, it offers a lot of space, but it’s pretty angsty. There’s a lot of built-up angst around what it was like to grow up in the Midwest.

SILY: This is probably a hard question to answer, but to what extent do certain songs address a little bit more head-on your experiences growing up queer in Iowa?

SR: Ooh...on this album?

SILY: Yes.

SR: Definitely “Delaine”. There’s a line in “Ten Thousand Years”, one of those segments I go through is, “My TV screen blew up, and I learned how to run.” That’s definitely referencing coming out and just ostracizing myself. I thought everyone was gonna disown me, and they didn’t. I was creating this thing in my head that if I came out, everyone would just stop talking to me because I was definitely abnormal and there weren’t a lot of gay people around me. It turns out I was just scooting around the issue with even my friends after almost a year, and finally, one of them brought it up and was like, “It’s okay, you know.” Because I had been coming to hang out with them with a girlfriend of mine but not saying who she was. It was just this suppressed thing I was creating for myself. “My TV screen blew up, and I learned how to run” refers to the fact that I was suppressing it pretty hard, to the point where I just decided to move away. In retrospect, kind of realizing that a lot of that was in my own head and my family has fully accepted me...although there’s still this kind of passive, “Oh, maybe some day she’ll date a man again. Maybe this is a phase.” My family is getting over that aspect, because it’s been a long time now. [laughs] It’s clearly not a phase.

SILY: And you’re married, right?

SR: Yeah. Well, I’m engaged to be married in October. But my parents and relatives still call her my friend. So there’s a passive underlying, they don’t want to acknowledge it. Not to say that they’re not supportive. So that line, “My TV screen blowing up,” I was creating this explosion in my own head, but it was outwardly existing in a passive way.

SILY: What about the song “Love Is Love”? The title of it is the most common expression for support for marriage equality, and there’s the phrase, “time’s a changin’” in that song, which is one of the oldest political statement tropes. Would you say that song is political in a way?

SR: It definitely is. To be honest, it wasn’t inspired by that. My being gay or queer is a different topic. But it of course applies to that and it’s perfect for the listener to find their own meaning in. I wrote that more around feeling privilege around me in the industry--especially white male privilege--and feeling its effects. It’s obviously a different topic, and I didn’t pinpoint that because I did want the song to be applicable to however the listener wants it to be.

SILY: The last song on the record is intriguing, and one of the things that stood out to me was how you ended it and therefore the album. I thought to myself, “How often do you hear the phrase, 'For example,' in a song, let alone to close the record?” It seemed to be a radical acceptance of things not being tied together entirely. What were you going for with that ending?

SR: I guess it felt like it did tie the whole record together. I sing, “For example, take the green / It turns to dust eventually,” which is basically the summary of the entire album. Everything evolves and changes and dissipates and starts over again. Trying to deny that just feels like you’re running against a current. It’s easier said than done--it’s definitely a process, realizing something like that. And then the following line, “The fire’s not in the rich / It’s in the fire that lights the ditch,” so it definitely ends on a pretty political note, and something I feel very strongly about, which is that in order for change to happen, we have to be a little more than forceful and less passive.

SILY: Maybe more from a prose perspective, it’s almost a very cool rejection of what you’re taught: “End something with a concluding thought.” You’re showing, not telling.

SR: For sure. It doesn’t end in a conclusive, “Here is the answer,” manner.

SILY: Many of the people you worked with--Jacob Hoffman, Trina Shoemaker, Joe Gastwirt--they’ve got pretty big resumes. What’s something you think you learned from working with them, and what might they have learned from working with you?

SR: Good question. Starting with Jacob, he just has this way of making me feel supported. He admires my songs. It’s really refreshing, because he sees me as a human. We have a lot of mutual respect for each other. Building this record off that mutual respect that was already established via touring with Brandi for almost a year on the bus was really crucial. [Hoffman plays piano in Carlile’s band]. He was one of those people I played my songs to after I wrote them on the back of the bus. I would be like, “Hey, come back here, I have a song to play you! What do you think?” I was definitely bouncing these songs off him. It just felt absolutely appropriate to invite him to be the producer.

He’s also this one-take wonder. He absolutely lights up when he picks up an instrument. Whenever he had a part on the song, he’d just go and get these crucial parts. In “Waukee”, that strumming. In “Love Is Love”, those very strong chords. He just nailed those parts on the first take and then he was just done. He was a very positive element in recording this. Him, and my drummer Sean T. Lane, and Mike Davis, the engineer, the three of them just offered these unique sensibilities and experiences. They always looked me straight in the eye when they had anything to say. From day one, they were like, “I’m following your vision.” I was like, “We’re gonna record this to tape and get live takes.” Whether they were hesitant or not, they didn’t show it. That’s not their way of going about it. They had to believe I could get these songs in full takes. I definitely felt that. I think you can get a sense for how comfortable I felt based on how the songs turned out. Jacob was one of the people to spearhead that feeling.

I started working with a different mixer at first. I can be pretty stubborn and like to do everything by myself, so I was like, “I’m gonna find my own mixer!” It just wasn’t working out. I was kind of not willing to admit it at first and ended up learning a pretty big lesson on that because I spent quite a bit of money on the first round of mixes and decided to trash them all--or set them aside, really. I was feeling a little vulnerable to call Trina. Initially, I was thinking I would just call her and have her mix one to two or three songs, and my partner Cat, who has been kind of my strong voice that’s whispering in my hear the whole way through this album process, was like, “Don’t cut corners.” I was running errands one day, and she called me, being like, “What are you gonna do? Are you gonna call Trina?” I was like, “Aw, man, I don’t know if she’s gonna have time, she has work for Sheryl Crow and Wood Brothers.” I was just feeling vulnerable about that. And she was like, “No. You’re gonna call Trina, and you’re gonna ask her to mix your whole record.” I was like, “I don’t know if we can afford it,” and she was like, “We’ll figure it out. Just do it!” It was just this reinforcement that I needed. I immediately called [Trina], and she immediately agreed to do it. It was so easy. I had built up this preconceived notion in my head that just wasn’t true. I called her, and she was super awesome. She actually thought I was a telemarketer, because my number’s from Iowa. She answered, “Who is this?!?” I was like, “Oh, dear!” [laughs] “I’m Sam, I play cello for Brandi.” “Oh, I’m sorry!” Working with her just blew my mind. She told me from the beginning that I’d have to wait for her to finish some projects and be patient, and I was like, “Absolutely, I’m willing to do that. It’s worth it to me.” And so we figured out how to make it work. She nailed a lot of them on the first mix. She really nailed that feeling of aliveness and spaciousness, and she brought out these little treasures I didn’t even know were there, which I thought was really crucial.

I don’t know. She’s an absolute genius and an artist, and working with her was definitely an honor. At some point we were talking on the phone--we ended up kind of becoming friends through this process--and she was telling me how she still studies string recordings and how they’re mixed. Even in her professional years, after so long, she still wants to grow and study these things. It definitely translates into her mixes because she’s not trying to put a thumbprint on them, just trying to make them what they should be. That’s the key, really.

Joe was also super awesome to work with, although mastering is a different experience and a little less involved. He was recommended to me by Trina, so I absolutely trusted that right off the bat. Trina thought he would be a great person to finish this project out, knowing that he, too, is not one to put a huge thumbprint on something. He doesn’t want to leave a mark. He just wants to maintain its integrity and slightly lift it up. That’s what Trina told me, and that’s exactly what he did. So it was a pleasure working with him, too.

SILY: What’s the story behind the cover art?

SR: Pete Souza took that photo in Mexico at the second Girls Just Wanna Weekend with Brandi Carlile. I met him years ago through Brandi, because he’d come to shows now and then and take pictures during the show. We started to become friends during that. I asked him one day whether he’d be able to take my album cover. It kind of didn’t work out a few times. He was gonna come to New York for the Madison Square Garden show and ended up not being able to because he was traveling a lot previously. There were a few times we were trying to get together and it didn’t work out. It came down to perfect timing because I still hadn’t found my mixes with Trina, and we hadn’t settled on an album cover yet, and we were in Mexico, and I was like, “Hey, wanna just go have a fun photo shoot?” It was so much fun. I was really nervous because I get super dorky in front of cameras. [laughs] My face just doesn’t look natural. He had this way of making me feel super comfortable. We were just having fun playing with sunlight and different colors of walls. It was just fun! It felt like two artists just working together and collaborating without any intent on what we were gonna achieve. He captured that shot, and then, yeah, the rest is history!

SILY: How have you been holding up during quarantine?

SR: At first it was kind of fun, and I had a lot of time to myself and to work on this release. But honestly, it’s just been hard. The range of emotions is something I’ve never felt quite before. The diversity of them. I’ve never experienced that many in such a small period of time. Usually, they’re stretched out into multiple experiences over a longer period of time. But I’ve gotten to this point where I’m super stir crazy. Cat and I have been really strict, and we have literally just been sheltering in place. We’ve left the house to go see the sun set, but we don’t get out of the car. We go to the grocery store like once a month and wear masks and gloves and are really conscious, so we’re just staying home most of the time.

It’s definitely getting to a place where, for me, I’ve just been completely diving into promotional stuff and album stuff and have been constantly been working on the computer. So it’s been a way for me to cope with my anxiety, but also, maybe not so healthy, because I don’t really have a firm boundary between when I’m doing it and when I’m not. But I’m learning a lot about myself. I think my biggest takeaway is I’m really glad to see how much support has been offered by friends and community members. It’s easy to get down on the world and the state of our government, but it’s been a little uplifting to see people rising up through that and offering their support. Even the smallest little posts, like, “Hey, let me know if I need to buy you a bag of groceries and put it on your doorstep.” Humanity is still good. That reminder is definitely driving me through this. My hope is very high, and my anxiety levels are very high.

SILY: I think a lot of people would agree with that statement...I know you’ve been busy with this record, but have you been consuming any other media, like music, books, movies, or shows?

SR: I’ve definitely been listening to some new records that just came out, including Laura Marling and Fiona Apple. I’ve really, really been diving into the Laura Marling album.

SILY: It’s incredible.

SR: It’s so good. I miss that feeling of putting on an album and immediately feeling relieved about how good it is. It’s more rare these days, me listening to something and want to obsessively listen to it after that. So I’ve been listening to that and definitely watching some shows and sitting on my back porch throwing a ball for my dog. [laughs] My three main activities.

SILY: Is there anything I didn’t ask about, the record or otherwise, that you want to say?

SR: Hmm...I guess the only thing that comes to mind is that, overarchingly, with this record, I really wanted to have a live feeling as if you were in the room. My intention around trying to catch these live takes, with guitar, main vocals, and drums, is that the drums and I could kind of create that vibe and then we’d build off of that. Sean and I were just working off of each other with those initial takes. At first it was an experiment, those initial takes, but we ended up being really proud of it.

Hey, did you watch season 4 voltron? What are your thoughts?

Hey, yeah, just finished it.

As for my thoughts, well, I’ve said it already, but considering that we’re now about halfway through the show, I can safely stick to the opinion that Voltron is a fun, shallow, action-adventure, space romp. So I judge it in accordance with that. Still, some Thoughts™ (spoilers):

- Why isn’t Allura the Black Paladin? What are they doing? What are they thinking? Why are they putting nostalgia above telling a good story? Allura has been carrying this team since they got her out of that cryo-pod. Why hasn’t this been properly acknowledged? Like “Heart of Voltron”? But the Heart is not in the foot, writers, even in aliens.

- Sibling stories own my soul. Like, I knew Matt makes it but still, that scene at the memorial, man, I teared up. And they’re? So? Good to each other? Together? Like A++ sibling dynamic 12/10 would recommend. And it’s so nice, and pretty rare as far as I know, that you have a brother-sister duo that not only gets along so well, but shares interests so much? Like, usually they like things that have little to no overlap but here they’re both just Super Huge Nerds™. And it’s great.

- The show has a huge problem with having way. Too. Many. Pointless. Gags. Like, that whole episode with Coran and the brain worm? Yeah, it was funny, at times, and the noodle aliens were cute… But what was the point? What did we learn about these characters? How did it push their development forward? How did it bring to the forefront aspects of their personalities or dynamics that we didn’t explore before?

This isn’t an indefinitely-running shonen anime that’s just wasting time so that it doesn’t overtake the manga, every second counts.

- Tied to that, it also has this thing with having those gags very ill-timed. Like, that one scene in “Beginning the Blitz”? When the Cruiser fell to the planet surface? Falling through the clouds? Followed by Voltron while smoke swirls around it and the Galra look on, tiny? I think that that was the first time they actually managed to get across just how huge and imposing Voltron is. They managed to achieve an level of immersion and atmosphere and mood that they’ve never so much as came close to before.

It was, in my opinion, the single best thing they’ve ever done. So, of course, they broke it with a gag.

- Again, still, the show is lacking in character moments. The reason why I find the villains much more compelling is because they don’t waste time when they put them on screen. Every time we see Lotor or Zarkon or Haggar, we either find out more about the world, the characters, or they push the story along. And I like that, I like it when a story respects the time I’m giving it.

Besides, it’s not like you can’t contribute to the story even through comedy. For example, that subplot with Allura, Coran, Lance and the cow, that was hilarious. (Still too drawn out, but it’ll do.) During that subplot we learn that Alteans don’t have milk nor dairy products, nor anything like them, hell, it’s pretty damn safe to assume that they don’t even have domesticated animals that are used in food production while also learning that Lance knows how to milk a cow and therefore we can glean that he spent time on a farm.

Worldbuilding! Character background exploration! Still funny!

Then compare that to the brain worm episode where we… learn that Voltron had to charm some people into joining it’s alliance? They could’t do that as either a B-plot or a throwaway line? It was an unfunny joke that got waaaaaaay too dragged out.

- I really liked that moment with Haggar touching her face. I just in general like it whenever Haggar’s onscreen.

- I don’t know how to feel about the fact that they’ve completely glossed over what happened next between Haggar and Zarkon. Like, I know that they’ll have to get to it at some point, but was it really necessary to leave it dangling right now? We’ll see how they handle it.

- I want more of the Galra Royal Family Mess™, okay? Like, does Lotor know Honerva and Haggar are the same person? The way he talked about her makes me think no. Does this mean that Zarkon simply never told him? And that he thinks that his mother died and was replaced by this witch character? How did all of this go down? I can’t wait to find out.

- That one time where Zethrid was like, “Sorry Lotor” and Lotor was like, “Cool, cool, alright, alright.” and then proceeded to dislocate both of his shoulders and launch her out into space. That was golden.

- Lotor is not pulling a Zuko. He doesn’t think he’s done anything wrong, this is all pure opportunism. And it would be hilarious if his Lady Squad got the same idea.

- All I want from the next season is for every single member of the team to get to spend a full episode locked in a room with Lotor. Because that is comedy I can get behind.

That’s about it, Anon, it was mostly fun, but at points it felt like a chore to get through.

Italian Wrecking Ball NAGA Emerges With “Worm”

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

We’ve got a double-whammy for you today! Celebrated Naples threesome NAGA are back with an exclusive track and are opening up for their first interview in a while. If you’re new to the music of Lorenzo De Stefano (vocals/guitar), Emanuele Schember (bass), Dario Graziano (drums), I can’t think of a better description than their own: “…distortion, heaviness and nihilism to your ears. No concept, no bullshits, no happiness, just sound anger and frustration to exorcize and reflect the greyness and despair of contemporary world.” Now that’s something I can really raise my horns to.

Naga’s second album, ‘Inanimate’ (2016), is absolutely crushing (I raved about it in our quarterly ’Doom Around The World’). Since its digital release, the band has been picked up by Everlasting Spew Records, which is releasing Inanimate on CD on March 25th (you can order it here). For this special edition, NAGA has recorded a new single, which Doomed & Stoned is premiering today.

“Worm” opens with sparse textures. A dissonant theme is introduced in single string plucks. Soon, this erupts into a storm of cacophony. The vocals are ravings of madness. The dense atmosphere is one of opaque gloom, with sheets of rain pouring down from blackened, low-hanging clouds. NAGA has orchestrated a mood of perfect doom, something that echoes entirely throughout Inanimate.

You started playing music together almost 15 years ago, in the beginning with a band called KTER (Kill The Easter Rabbit) and later, in 2013, you have founded Naga. A long evolution that brought you good feedback since the debut album 'Hēn’ (2014). Your musical path is clearly the result of a strong partnership, something that’s hard to find. What does unite you? And what pushed you to start a band?

Basically, we are friends, kind of brothers, so it was completely natural to stick together and start up a band. We just share the same idea of music and life in general. We met in Lyceum and, at that time, in Naples it was not that easy to find someone to share the same idea of music with, and still this is the case. We both liked heavy stuff like Motörhead, Melvins, Slayer, and Electric Wizard so It was natural to come by and say “hey let’s start a band together.” Basically, we feel music in the same way and that’s what unites us. Then we found in Dario the natural 3rd part. I’ve played with many drummers, but Dario is the best one. He shares our musical tastes, he’s a really clever and skilled musician, and above all a dear friend. Now we have a clear idea of how our band has to sound, and that’s it.

Staying on topic, tell us how your songs come to life and what inspired the 'Inanimate.’ Is there a theme, a concept, to your song writing and how do the lyrics tie in?

We have to distinguish the musical composition and the lyrics. The writing process is really natural like, “Hey guys, I have this riff. What do you think?” A major impulse comes from Dario, who I always say is the best guitar player of the band. He’s amazingly creative and our ideas really fit together. Basically, we develop every song from a riff then we add parts to that. I organize the structure and only at the end comes the vocal part.

I am the only writer of the lyrics since we started and, no, there’s no concept. Maybe I’d like to write a concept in the future, but right now I’ve got no time. The only remarkable theme of our lyrics is nihilism, but sometimes with a sort of bright side outside the Abyss. I am mainly inspired by my personal life and my lectures.

'Inanimate’ was initially released by Lay Bare Recordings in 2016. This year, you have chosen to reissue it whit a new track, “Worm,” on the thriving Italian label, Everlasting Spew Records. How did you get in contact with them and with this repress, what kind of improvement you have brought to the album?

The EP sold out in just a month. Lots of people asked us for a repress, so we just looked for someone interested in re-releasing our work. Luckily, we found Everlasting Spew, thanks to our manager Tito Vespasiani, who set up everything with the label. We have found in Giorgio from Everlasting a really helpful and cool guy. The label is young and ambitious just like us, so we can grow up together.

Obviously, we want to reprint to be something special, so we recorded the new track “Worm” that sounds more death metal oriented, in order to increase the impact of the album, and decorated everything with a brand new master by the almighty James Plotkin. You can’t go wrong with him.

Talk aboute bands or the records that have influenced you most as musicians and helped you develop your personal sound. Are there other kinds of influences, like art and literature, as well?

Speaking of the bands or albums I love, I have to mention, of course, the first five LPs of Black Sabbath, 'Abbey Road’ by the Beatles, '1969’ by The Stooges, 'Hell Awaits’ by Slayer, 'Bleach/In Utero’ by Nirvana, Celtic Frost’s 'Morbid Tales,’ 'Transylvanian Hunger’ by Darkthrone, Carcass’ 'Necroticism,’ Sonic Youth and, naturally, Neurosis and all the doom, sludge, and black metal stuff. We like also old Swedish death metal and some newer stuff from God City studios, Converge Nails, H.O.F. and so on.

But I have to say that no particular band has inspired us in our style. We try to be personal and evolve by ourselves in shaping the sound and in the creative process. Then, I really like to see live bands, most of all I am a music fan, and I like to capture here and there things I like in order to incorporate them in our music. It’s an important part, I’d say pedagogical, in developing our style.

Apart from music, I read more than I play guitar, so of course my interests in philosophy and literature are a huge part of my life and give me inspiration for my lyrics and atmospheres. I am not really into this occult or movie stuff, it’s just a cliché of our music genre. I prefer to write about my personal life and something that really touches me or that has influenced my life path, hybridized sometimes with philosophical themes. Nietzsche, Jünger, and Heidegger are a big influence for my lyrics, just like Sabbath are for my playing. I am just tired of bands that sings about voodoo magic, weed, barbarians, and fantasy stuff. It’s a little prosaic, or at least it does not work with us. Instead, I like Neurosis or Amenra’s lyrical approach. “Thrives,” “Hyele,” and “Worm” from Inanimate are a good example of that.

At the moment, you’re ready to play with Candlemass in northern Italy and this summer you will play in a big festival in Iceland (with a lot of important acts like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Neurosis, Sólstafir, Misþyrming and many more). How do you feel about playing live? Are there any past gigs that you think have been more important than others, something you still remember as “special”?

Playing live is the most important part. I really dig bands that kick ass live. We just try to be natural, to play at the loudest volume possible, and to be violent. We stay simple. We aren’t the band that takes too much time to sound check monitors and stuff like that. We like to be “in your face,” to come out and play. That’s why I regard NAGA basically as a punk/hardcore band, concerning the approach and attitude. We do not have any filter -- we like to play straight and direct, that’s all.

Concerning the past live shows, I would mention the Watchtower Festival in Pisa with Napalm Death, Church of Misery and The secret, where we met those amazing guys Michael, Lorenzo and Marco (from the Secret/Hyerophant), the Glue lab in Ancona, Tetris in Trieste, and two concerts in our city Naples, the first at Cellar with Marnero, and another on a harbor in the middle of Naples’s gulf called Molosiglio, two D.I.Y. concerts, fully packed with 200-300 people and lots of friends. Do not ever underestimate Naples’ scene. We belong here. It’s a lot better and hotter than others although not publicized.

During your musical career, you have seen lots of changes, first of all the “social-media” revolution, which can help bands to expand their possibilities outside their own country. What do you think about this and have you noticed some differences between past and present? What do you think about the current musical scene in Italy and abroad?

Social media are a double edged sword. It allows bands to spread their message and music around the world, but it’s something that could saturate the scene too. The problem with social media is that now you have to take care of lots of other stuff apart from music, the image, the posts, news and so on. I do not really like this aspect. Emanuele is a little more skilled than me in this, I am not good at it. But, of course, Facebook and Bandcamp have been helping us a lot, same goes with Discogs and eBay where you can spread your music worldwide. I knew our first record Hen was in the hands of Tad Doyle of Tad/Brothers of the Sonic Cloth or in the ones of Mike Scheidt of Yob and it was pretty amazing, since I’ve been listening to these bands since I was 15.

About the scene, I think that now there are many good bands around not only in our genre, the problem is sometimes the public and the live culture. In Germany, where I am at the moment, people go to see live shows buy merch and so on. In Italy, things are going slower, you have to plan carefully every event and so on. But I can not complain about Naples and Italy. In general, we have always had an amazing audience and a good feedback.

Speaking of Italian bands I’d mention above all Grime, Hyerophant, Messa, Caronte, Profanal, Fuoco Fatuo,Zippo/Shores of null, La Casta and Marnero, there are many others but these are the first coming to my mind right now.

Any closing thoughts for the Doomed & Stoned readers?
