Unveiling the Canvas of My Success: A Journey Through Digital Artistry
As I navigate the digital realm from the confines of my wheelchair, my journey as an independent artist with Cerebral Palsy has been one of resilience, creativity, and unwavering determination. Today, I'm thrilled to share the story of my burgeoning success in the realm of digital artistry, where every pixel painted on the canvas of my website speaks volumes of passion and perseverance.
My name is Sam Taylor, and I am the driving force behind a digital art platform that has been steadily gaining recognition in the vast expanse of cyberspace. Despite the physical limitations imposed by my wheelchair, I have found solace and liberation in the realm of digital creation, leveraging technology to transcend boundaries and share my unique perspective with the world.
At the heart of my artistic journey lies a deep-seated love for landscape photography. Captivated by the raw beauty of nature's tapestry, I embarked on a quest to immortalize fleeting moments of majesty through the lens of my Iphone. With each tap, I sought to capture not just images but emotions, weaving narratives that transport viewers to distant realms of serenity and awe.
However, it wasn't until I embraced digital artistry that my vision truly found its voice. Fuelled by a desire to break free from the constraints of traditional mediums, I harnessed the power of technology to transform my photographs into vibrant digital prints. Through meticulous editing and manipulation, I breathed new life into static images, infusing them with a sense of dynamism and surrealism that resonated with audiences far and wide.
As an independent artist navigating the competitive landscape of the digital art market, establishing a strong online presence was paramount to my success. Leveraging social media platforms and e-commerce channels, I painstakingly curated a digital gallery that showcased the breadth and depth of my artistic repertoire. From sweeping vistas to intimate portraits, each piece served as a testament to my creative vision and technical prowess.
One of the defining aspects of my journey as a digital artist is my identity as a wheelchair user with Cerebral Palsy. While some may perceive my physical condition as a hindrance, I have always viewed it as a source of strength and resilience. Through my artwork, I strive to challenge societal perceptions of disability, fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment that celebrates diversity in all its forms.
My success as a digital artist is not measured solely by sales figures or accolades but by the impact my work has on the hearts and minds of those who encounter it. Whether it's a fleeting moment of inspiration or a profound emotional connection, I am humbled by the thought that my art has the power to touch lives and spark conversations that transcend barriers of language and culture.
As I look towards the horizon, I am filled with a sense of optimism and excitement for the journey that lies ahead. With each mouse stroke and keystroke, I am reminded of the boundless potential of the human spirit to defy expectations and forge new pathways towards creativity and self-expression. And so, I invite you to join me on this exhilarating odyssey through the digital landscape, where every click brings us one step closer to unlocking the infinite possibilities of artistic discovery.
In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported me on this extraordinary journey – from friends and family to fellow artists and patrons. Your unwavering belief in my vision has been the driving force behind my success, and for that, I am eternally grateful. Together, let us continue to illuminate the world with the radiant beauty of digital artistry, one pixel at a time.
Warm regards, Sam Taylor

This chapter came out a little longer than usual. lemony teasing
Natsu’s secretary called her boss from the front office. “Mr. Dragneel, Mr. Avatar is here.”
“Thank you, Ms. Kinana. Send him in.”
Because no one in the organization was a computer whiz, he contracted with an independent IT person who was recommended by Yura. The guy, Jerome Avatar wasn’t skittish, didn’t care who he worked for as long as it paid well, and generally had a pleasant demeanor. As the accountant, Yura was in contact with Jerome the most, but for any major issues or changes, those had to be cleared with Natsu first. It was mostly quick, in and out of the office dealings.
Jerome shook Natsu’s hand over the desk before taking a seat.
“So,” Natsu questioned, “what brings you here today? Is there something I need to approve?”
“No, nothing new. I asked for this meeting because I came across some intelligence you might be interested in.”
“Oh?”
“I learned that your rival Heartfilia had been in contact with a new cyber security client, Mikage Kaishā who’s into a lot of shady dealings with government contacts.”
Natsu shrugged his shoulders. “Sounds like just a typical client for her, probably has her launder money for them. I don’t really pay attention to her clients because we deal with different things. But I do appreciate you telling me.”
“Should I keep an eye on them?”
“That’s fine if you believe it’s worth it. And if you learn about anything that could hurt us let me know immediately. By the way, how did you find out this information?”
“A friend in the field told me about it, then I hacked into Heartfilia’s computers to authenticate the information.”
Natsu sat forward in his chair. “You hacked into her computer? I’m surprised her employee didn’t catch that, cause I know she’s good at this stuff too.”
The man grinned. “Well, not as good as me.” He pointed to Natsu’s laptop. “If you’d like, I can set it up so you can access her system from your computer too.”
“Oh, I don’t want to tamper with her company—”
Jerome waved a hand nonchalantly to stop him. “I wouldn’t advise it either, if you touch things, that’s what’ll get attention, but you can watch what’s going on. Keep an eye on her calendar, meeting dates, whatever you want.”
Natsu sat back, rubbing his chin. The offer was a very tempting one indeed. A chance to stalk his ex through cyberspace… someone must have mentioned to this Jerome guy their history. It wasn’t exactly hidden, but not something talked about either amongst lower ranking employees. This wasn’t the first time Jerome had brought them intelligence info, so maybe he was looking to increase his usefulness, climb the ladder so to speak? Being connected to a powerful Yakuza house was certainly handy, and what better way than to tap into such a personal subject.
“That could be interesting,” Natsu finally responded. “Alright, what do you have to do to set it up? And make sure it’s nothing I could screw up accidentally cause I really don’t want her to find out.”
Jerome looked at his watch as if calculating his options. “I could do it now. Might take me about an hour if you can go without the laptop for that amount of time.”
“You have to take it back to your office or something?”
“No,” the man shook his head. “I can do it right here, so I can explain along the way.”
“Perfect.” Natsu then called his secretary and requested she double his lunch order due to an extended meeting.
While the computer tech fiddled, Natsu just sat back with his meal, watching him work. Math wasn’t his strong suit— nor academics for that matter. Growing up, his father had always told him he would be next in line as boss, so he only learned what he needed to for that world. One needed strength, cunning, street smarts, not book smarts. Though he had to admit the things these hackers could do was scary when you thought about it. Lucy was lucky in that her best friend was just a wiz at language— including computer languages. It all looked like gibberish, but the woman interpreted it almost like a savant. According to Jerome, from what he’d seen so far, Levy was not yet at his skill level, but that could easily change with time and experience like he’d been through.
“Natsu you—” Gray paused his knock on the doorframe. “Sorry, I thought the meeting would be done by now.”
“It’s fine, Jerome is hacking Lucy’s system for me right now.” Natsu responded with a grin. “Now I’ll see what she’s up to in real time.”
Gray groaned and ran a hand down his face in disgust. “I’m not even gonna respond to that. But I will tell you I told you so when it blows up in your face later.”
“Tch. She won’t know, right Jerome?”
“She shouldn’t unless you touch something.” The man answered while continuing to type.
“See. It’ll be fine.”
“You’re an idiot. Anyway,” Gray waved a hand nonchalantly as he left, “call me when your free to go over the new orders.”
“It will be fine, right?” Natsu asked Jerome a second time with a bit of anxiety in his tone.
Jerome stopped typing. “As long as you just observe they shouldn’t see you, just don’t get excited and touch something.”
“I don’t plan to; not like I’ll know how to do that anyways.”
“I’m almost finished, but do you want me to turn on her web camera so you can see through it?”
“But she won’t see me?”
“No, for you it’ll just be like watching a one-way video feed with image and audio.”
After a momentary pause, Natsu’s eyes narrowed with a mischievous grin. “Do it.”
Being able to see Lucy every day and feed his addiction was just too tempting, ‘I’m turning into a junky.’ But Gray’s words entered his mind. What if the man was right, could this bite him in the ass later? Probably… Though how bad could it really be? He really had no plans to interfere with Lucy’s business, just her personal life— and yes, he knew it sounded horrible. What right did he have to stalk his ex? None. ‘I just worry about her, is that so wrong?’ Lucy’s tough, but she’s just a woman and their world didn’t always treat women fairly. His desire to protect her bordered neuroticism, but could anyone blame him considering the underworld they worked in. ‘I’m just doing it to protect her,’ Natsu justified it to himself. Guys like Gray who haven’t fallen in love yet, ‘they just don’t understand.’ If anything were to happen to Lucy, he didn’t know what he would do. Probably move Heaven and earth and kill any in his way for what they’d done.
It took just over an hour before Jerome finished installing the spyware and making sure the systems were still secured. Just a one-way mirror that Levy shouldn’t catch unless really digging for it. Another 20 minutes were spent explaining to Natsu how to do the accessing part, including pulling up the webcam whenever he wanted to. “Or just leave it running,” Jerome noted. “It’ll just show up in this window,” he pointed towards the screen, “and as long as you don’t log out completely from your computer it’ll stay open.”
“Who turns off their computers?”
“Actually, it’s a good idea to turn them off now and then so any software updates can be completed, but since I manage your systems, there’s not really a need to.”
“Great.” The two men stood up and shook hands. “Thanks, Jerome.”
“It was my pleasure.”
When Natsu arrived each day at headquarters, the first thing and last thing he did was check to see if there was anything new or interesting going on Lucy’s side. It was like being hooked on one of their products, because the high it gave sucked him right in. But so far, he also stayed away from the video feed. Looking through her calendar or emails were cold and impersonal, but maybe the video was too close, too real, too much of a moral dilemma in crossing that line of a peeping Tom. That didn’t mean his addiction may one day require more feeding…
October had rolled around, and the air outside grew crisp and cold. It was a beautiful time of the year with the color changing leaves, reminding that winter was soon upon them. How quickly the time sure flew. The Dragneel Yakuza clan had already started preparing for their end of year Bonenkai to happen in mid-December. This plus the Shinnenkai in January were the two biggest parties the clan threw for all their members. The first is to forget the stresses of the past year, while the other was to welcome a successful new year. Natsu spared no expense on the food and drinks to take care of the loyalty and hard work their members contributed. From the emails, he knew that Lucy’s group had also started preparing for theirs. ‘Maybe I’ll crash her party,’ he mused to himself. ‘Oh, what’s this?’ His eyes fell on a new email of an appointment reminder for the next day. It was for Lucy’s monthly massage at an upscale spa. Natsu checked his own calendar and noticed he had nothing booked, no meetings, no shipments arriving— a perfect opportunity.
The next day, Natsu went to the spa early and spoke directly to the owner, paying them a nice chunk of change to allow him access and to play along. Lucy was scheduled for 2pm and arrived right on time. So, as he waited behind the scenes, the receptionist acted like normal and directed her inside. She had a regular masseuse, something Natsu knew he couldn’t fake upfront, so that person stood inside the room to greet her.
“Welcome, Ms. Heartfilia. I’ll step out while you get ready. Please lie on your stomach like normal.”
“Thank you, Kenji,” Lucy smiled. She’d been coming here for a couple years and was aware of the routine. The male masseuse had strong, but gentle hands and knew her body well by now.
Natsu had to admit he wasn’t happy to find out Lucy’s regular masseuse was a guy but held back from lashing out. He didn’t want to do anything to mess up this adventure— and oh, he planned to have his own revenge. It wouldn’t be as sexual as the soapland incident but knowing many of her trigger points meant he could do a bit of damage well enough. Now, Natsu had noted that Kenji’s voice was a bit deeper than his own, which would be difficult to fake, but the man explained he didn’t do much talking while working and played relaxing music during the session. Perfect. Natsu could just hit play and not talk at all.
“Ready, Ms. Heartfilia?” Kenji called out through the closed door.
The muffled yes was heard, and the man stepped away, leaving Natsu to his business. He entered the room and immediately turned on the pre-set music, a light instrumental with Asian undertones. It was quite pleasing to listen to. And there Lucy was under a silk sheet to cover her naked body, with her arms up and crossed, head perched on the relaxed hands, and hair up in a loose bun, revealing her beautiful neck. Natsu almost shuddered at the sight and knowledge he would get to touch her skin… it was the one thing she didn’t allow him to do at Soapland— touch. His grin grew as he rubbed his hands together to warm them before making the first move.
He moved the sheet to uncover Lucy’s lower half, up to the thighs, then applied a film of scented massage oils to his hands with a few drops over the taut muscles along her long legs, chasing the dripping liquid along her skin to smooth them over. His hands glide through several passes to the swell of her ass, then back down again all the way to the ankles, fingers applying pressure against the tendons and ligaments to gently work out any tension it encountered. Lucy sighed wispily as his hands massaged each foot, squeezing, smoothing, paying attention to each digit and every curve. His thumbs applied pressure at the arches, kneading the tight knots there from wearing heels all day long. He stayed focused on the area, her toes curling and flexing as the mewls leaching from her show their pleasure, until Natsu felt the knots give and relax away.
“Mmm, you’re getting good at that Kenji,” Lucy purred with a little huskiness in her tone.
Natsu grinned to himself as he lowered the sheet back down, so she stayed warm and moved onto her supple ass. Using both hands, he took his time to knead each cheek through the silken fabric, using his fingers to follow the gluteus muscles, starting near the leg, and following the swell of her curve upwards, slowly riding the fibers looking for any knots or tense areas. One cheek, then the other paying loving attention to and listening to the sounds Lucy made to clue him in on where to go. Every sigh a notch in his belt, each mewling purr a win. Natsu grew bolder, fanning out his thumb each time it got closer to her thighs to touch…
“Oh, Kenji,” Lucy whined, “you’re being a naughty boy today— keep it up.”
‘What?!’ Natsu’s hands paused and tensed for a split second before catching himself. Does Kenji mess with her too?! He shook his head and finished up in the area quickly trying not to let such thoughts stop him. ‘Just focus…’ Natsu grumbled in his head.
After applying more oil to his hands, he moved the sheet down to reveal Lucy’s back and for a second time, Natsu paused on what it contained. Her tattoo… It symbolized… he took a deep breath and dropped more oil on to the skin, willing away the memories breaching his mind. He didn’t want to think about it, not now. It was too painful.
“You okay, Kenji?” Lucy questioned as if noticing the slight pause or tremble in the man’s hands.
Natsu mumbled a soft Mmhmm and dived into the massage so Lucy wouldn’t grow more concerned, missing the uptick in the corners of her lips. He slowly smoothed along the skin using the base of his palms for pressure, each hand following the muscles, moving out from the waist, up the center of her back, and flaring out towards the sides just below the shoulder blades, repeating the same movement, each time increasing the speed while lessening the pressure. Next, he targeted the upper back and shoulder blades, an area he knew Lucy held a lot of tension from carrying the weight of her voluptuous bosoms. With precise ministrations, Natsu applied careful pressure with his thumbs and follows the curve of the blades up and around to the top of the shoulder. He then searched with the pads of his fingers for any knots along her trap muscles, moving up along the spine and fanning out to the top of her shoulders.
“Oh, yeah, right there,” Lucy mewled when he reached a specific spot.
The area around her spine, between the shoulder blades held the most tension and knots from constantly holding the upright, flexed posture that wearing heels will create. Her wispy sighs signaled the release of her tense muscles, bringing another wave of pride swelling in him. Natsu continued onto her neck, his strong hands kneaded the supple flesh, fingers palpating and soothing all the knots. Her neck too, held a few tense areas, especially around the base of the head, so he did his best to melt them away. He worked through Lucy’s mewls and moaning sighs, almost sexual in nature, aroused and a little heated in the face knowing his handiwork brought forth such sounds. Ugh, how he wanted to hear more of it! Lucy putty in his hands and spread between his thighs, calling out his name…
“You’ve gotten better at this… Natsu,” the cocky teasing tone, snapped him out of his dream.
Natsu?” He tried failingly to disguise his voice. “I’m Kenji, Ms. Heartfilia.”
“Uh-huh. You think I can’t tell the difference Natsu?” Lucy quipped back with a chuckle. “Kenji’s routine is very different. Plus, I knew the moment I smelled your cologne.”
Busted.
“Tch. Well, if you knew it was me all along, why’d you let me do this?”
“Making you work is my payback.” She settled back down, relaxed on her arms. “Now, chop, chop, finish the job.”
This little minx! He was the one supposed to be torturing her this time, not the other way around! “Fine, kitten.” Natsu gritted out a smile and took hold of her neck again to placate and lull Lucy back into thinking he would go along. He massaged the sides with the tips of his fingers Both hands wrapped around, and his thumbs pushing up through her hair against the muscles on the back of her head.
“If only you’d taken care of me like this before,” Lucy mumbled.
Natsu paused and leaned over her ear. “Why not let me take care of you now?”
“You know the answer to that.”
“No, I don’t know the answer, that’s part of the problem!”
Lucy sighed. “Natsu, I don’t want to fight right now. I’m here to relax, not fight. If you’re done, then leave and send Kenji back in.”
“Oh, yeah. Why? Because he’s another one of your boy toys? He gonna be naughty again with you once I leave?!”
“Pfft, I said that knowing it was you, idiot.”
“I think you live to torture me, Angel. But you’re right. I don’t wanna fight right now either, so—” Natsu leaned down quick and latched his mouth onto the area between her shoulder blades, sucking hard.
Lucy squealed and reached back frantically trying to claw at his face, but he grabbed her hands, knowing if she struggled any harder, she risked completely exposing herself. He held her for a few seconds, and once satisfied he’d achieved his goal, let go.
“Natsu! Did you put a hickey on me?!”
“This Angel,” he trailed his fingers over Lucy’s tattoo as he spoke, “belongs to me. Will always be mine,” he whispered close to her ear. “You know it, I know it, and your boy toys will know it too.”
“I hate you.”
“Nah,” Natsu stood up and covered her back up with the sheet. “You hate that you don’t hate me. It’s okay. I still love you too. See ya around kitten.”
Natsu heard the woman’s sigh as the door closed behind him and smiled to himself. He knew she didn’t actually hate him, their relationship was just complicated at the moment, never love the actual problem between them… Though, it had been a dick move to give her a hickey, but that’s what Lucy gets for leading him on like that. She could’ve just stopped the massage immediately if she knew it was him all along, so to let him go through the entire process, it was tit for tat— and hey, at least it’s only temporary.
‘It’s your move next kitten…’

1 - Personal History: An Impetus for the Archive
Three Short Stories About My Life
1. Pictures and Memories
Late nights and single road highways are the fertile crescent of introspection and honest discourse. Yesterday provided me two hours and excellent company as I drove myself and one of my partners back from the beach to her house.  I shared with her an episode of and NPR show called “This American Life.” The episode was entitled “The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar,” and it detailed journey of one woman as she explored a family legend involving kidnap.  (The show is excellent and I recommend giving it a listen but it is the setting for my story, not the focus).  Listening to this story got me thinking about all of the stories I have heard my extended family tell about the people and places they grew up around.  The older I get the more I realize that those personal histories, those stories, those memories of people all pass as we forget them, giving people a second death - one of memory.
Last year my grandparents had to be moved into a nursing home as they were no longer able to take care of themselves and my parents weren’t going to be able to give them enough of the attention that they needed.  This resulted in the adult members of my extended family going through boxes and boxes of old things mainly including piles of unsorted photos.  The family went through them and put together coherent albums for posterity but there were so many pictures that putting them all into some kind of archived format was going to be unrealistic and no one particularly wanted to deal with all of that.  At the family reunion we have every summer we all went through the remaining pictures.  I couldn’t help but notice how many unlabeled pictures we went through that no one in my family could recognize.  There were family members photographed that no one knew, people who had been forgotten - who have died that second death.
 2. My Musical Family
Music has always been a keystone feature in my world and in my development.  My dad’s bachelor’s degree is in music and my brothers and I all took various lesson growing up.  Indeed, my uncles and cousins on my dad’s side of the family have all had some formal training in music and many also have degrees in music.  It will come as no surprise, then, that my bachelor’s is in music education and my day job is teaching music. I credit my grandfather (and I suppose my great grandfather) for my musical heritage.  My grandfather was part of a gospel quartet for a very long time and music was just as big a part of my dad’s childhood as it was mine.  Due to this, its not an uncommon experience for my family to sing in four parts when we get together.  Indeed, at my grandfather’s funeral we all sang a few hymns and the power of that moment for me can not be overstated; several generations of Sivils’s all singing to celebrate the man that started us down our paths. I vowed that if we got together like that again and sang that I would get very good recordings made.
3. 90s Kid
I am a child of the internet - a digital native.  I grew up suffering the droning wails of dial-up and exploring the bold new frontier of the web.  I spent time on messengers and blog sites that I really had no business being on and making friends with strangers across that vast cyberspace.  I also, like many of us, experienced my sexual awakening there by stumbling into porn and going down that rabbit-hole.  My journey through adolescence involved making way too many accounts on websites I don’t even remember and many of which have perished in the constant onslaught of creation that is the internet.
These days I function successfully as a digital citizen, cultivating blogs for aesthetics, social media for connections and just enjoying the content I care about, but the ghosts of internet past still lurk out in the aether.
What These Stories Mean
These three things have all collided in me to spark the beginning of a journey.  That late night car ride, and the relevant discussion with a woman I love, has made me want to properly explore and document my personal and family history.  Today, again after an interesting discussion with that same woman I love, I decided to try to find the relics of my internet past with specific focus on one blog I had for a very short period of time.  The website was called melodramatic.com and I got an account on it to facilitate open communication with a partner I had in a clandestine relationship.  At the time, it was our bubble, our destiny island floating adrift in a sea of our own feelings and searchable tags on a website aimed at melodrama. The website is now defunct and getting any useful information off of it has proven challenging so it seems to me that that particular part of my personal history is gone to only my memory - a fallible thing, a thing that will fade. I don’t even remember my username so using various resources like the wayback machine have proved fruitless.
So, at the promptings of my lovely partner and in the mourning of my internet past I have decided to begin a journey of cataloging, an exploration of records, an archiving of myself and my family.  This endeavor serves no other purpose than to create an archive that will exist.  I have no pragmatic reason for creating it or goal in mind with its completion (if it even can be completed).  This blog, too, is but another extension of this selfish quest.  Today I become the selfish archivist.

Government Assigned PokeSona #29
@astroellipse, your government assigned PokeSona is Porygon!
Tumblr media
Want to know more about getting a Government Assigned PokeSona? Click here!
Want to know how I picked this PokeSona? Read on…
Here are the answers I was given:
Zodiac Sign: Sun: Capricorn / Moon: Scorpio / Rising: Leo
Personality: I'm a very quiet person; I have trouble with conversation, though that's not to say I don't enjoy it. I become jealous easily. I am super anxious; I carry a book around with me at all times while I'm at school, or most places, I guess, so I can escape conversation and get out of uncomfortable situations mentally. I am tired a lot, and am generally slow in speech, movement, and thinking, though I'm not really dull. A good example of this is how I do in things like Kahoot vs an exam; I always do awful in Kahoot. I might start out on top, but even if I get all the answers right I'll never win because of how long it takes me to answer. On the other hand, I tend to do very well on tests, as evidenced by my scoring in the top 10 in the regional mathlegue. I'm also pretty modest... excluding right now, I guess?
Ok since that whole paragraph made me sound like kind of a stuck up tool I'll also talk about my hobbies. I play video games any time I have free-time, usually things revolving around making your own story, like Skyrim, or Starbound (it's how I justify never writing to myself.) I'm actually, like, the biggest nerd I know (that... hurt to type, but it's true :/), I just have no one to talk to about stuff. I have so many useless facts in my head I could write a book if only I had the motivation.
Aesthetic: I don't really... care how things look? I'm pretty blind to things that 'look good', so I usually keep things simple. For example, every outfit I have is either a hoodie and jeans or a flannel and jeans. My room is also a mess; the wall behind my bed is bright green, I have a teal body pillow on my bed, with a lavender comforter, all on top of a stone grey sheet. The rest of the walls are unpainted and stripey  white/grey. I have two blue polkadotted drawers. Opposite to my bed is a very formal looking dark grey desk/cabinet combo. Oh, and my nightstand is covered in zebra print. Everyone else who sees my room says it's a mess but I don't really get it. I guess I just prefer function over aesthetic in literally every case.
Why did I pick Porygon?
I’m pretty sure the answers accidentally got cut off, but as far as I can tell, astroellipse didn’t tell me their favorite types so they wouldn’t affect what I picked. That was an interesting change of pace. Basically, because of the focus of simplicity, a no frills type like normal felt like a fitting choice
Also, since Porygon was manmade, “function > aesthetic” makes sense
Porygon’s color scheme is almost a little clashing, fitting in with the mish mash of colors astroellipse described in their room
Also, blue was a color they liked and there’s some blue on the design
“Very quiet” feels accurate for Porygon (it’s hard to visualize its personality, but still)
Porygon can freely travel through cyberspace, and it’d make sense if that extended to virtual reality (I made the connection when video games were brought up)
Since Porygon is made of coding and technology, I think that works well for someone who admits to being “the biggest nerd [they] know”
Porygon is far from dull, but it is slow. Its base speed isn’t very high (40), but also, Porygon’s hidden ability is analytic. This increases the power of a move by 30% if the Pokemon using it moves second. This works perfectly with the description of being not so great at things that require quick thinking/acting, but much better at tests that give more time to think. Usually I don’t manage to incorporate a Pokemon’s ability in like this so I’m pretty proud of myself ngl

Zajok a nappaliból – Grande Traxelektor 2020 - “Mind”
Szóval a Szelekció Hatalom. A következő posztban a „Move” kategória érkezik majd, szerintem ez elég egyértelmű ide a táncos, magas bpm számú darabok kerülnek (Shut Up and Dance!). Different Personalities In Different Social Media Platforms
Environment affects personality
People in different environments have different personalities. For example, going to a food stall with a familiar friend is not the same as going to a five-star hotel with a new bank customer. Individuals will show different personalities;
Social tools or platforms are also a virtual environment, they are different from real-life but also share the same rules, social tools or platforms give us more reaction time, allowing us to decorate our words and behaviours based on different purposes, even purposes that we are not aware of. When it comes to face-to-face, our reactions are more based on our very limited time thinking, inertia, and our subconscious instincts. The subconscious instinct hides a part of ourselves that we don't understand. We can reply to messages on social tools or platforms after more time of thinking, which is completely different from face-to-face.
Introduction of Weibo & Wechat
Let's pull out two different software to explore all aspects in which people will show different personalities:
Sina Weibo is a social media website launched by Sina.com to provide microblogs. Users can publish news through web pages, mobile phone programs, etc., and upload pictures and videos or live video broadcasts to instant sharing and communication interaction. It is currently called the Chinese version of Twitter.
WeChat is an application that Tencent launched to provide instant messaging. “Moment” is a social function on Tencent's WeChat. Similar to the photo album function of Path and Instagram, and can share the photo album to the circle of friends. Users can "comment" or "like" new photos posted by friends, and other users can only see comments or likes of the common friends.
In today's prosperous social media, WeChat Moments and Weibo are important platforms for netizens to express themselves and socialize, and people's desire for expression and interaction have been greatly satisfied. However, many netizens behave quite differently on the two platforms. Some netizens said that their Moments and Weibo have been quiet for a year, and one will let themselves free speaking; one is full of vitality, and the other is not. Why does the same person behave like two people just by switching their "positions"?
With the topic "you in the circle of friends and you in Weibo" on the hot search, netizens built tall buildings on Weibo around this topic. After "climbing the building", the author found that most netizens said that their own appearance, roles, and emotions expressed in Moments and Weibo are indeed very different, and they switch roles between the two.
At the beginning of the Internet, self-presentation and role-playing was a major feature of online communication, and switching between different roles was commonplace. In the early days, people’s social behaviour on the Internet was characterized by physical absence. In this anonymous world, people who struggle with their body shape can portray themselves as skinny, plain-looking, or as beautiful as a fairy. The protection of anonymity makes cyberspace a virtual place where people can play their favourite roles as they like, or even play several roles at the same time. The powerful connection function of the Internet enables people to easily establish contact with distant strangers, and even chat and interact with different strangers in different roles at the same time. The isolation and connection of the Internet not only made early Internet users very keen on network expression and network interaction, but also extended this expression and interaction to the world of strangers, and obtained unprecedented pleasure.
With the rise of social media, cyberspace, which is the stage for people's role-playing and social interaction, began to differentiate. In contrast, Weibo is more similar to the early cyberspace, like a large square where strangers interact, while the circle of friends is embedded in the real world, more like a relatively closed circle of acquaintances. In the square, in the face of strangers, people can express themselves relaxedly, talk to themselves freely, share happiness with strangers, and complain about their troubles. When you encounter a text you like, you can forward it and praise it without hesitation; when you read a point of view that you don’t like, you can also be unscrupulous. In the circle of acquaintances, even if everyone is not that familiar, people’s self-presentation and expression will face various invisible pressures, especially when the number of friends in the circle of friends is increasing, and the composition becomes more and more complicated. Speaking will inevitably be scrupulous, and you need to be careful and careful, so as not to bring unnecessary negative effects to your work and life. And once it needs to be expressed carefully, the joy of self-presentation and expression disappears. This may be why netizens would be so high in Weibo and "quiet as a ghost" in Moments.
High mobility is an important feature of the network society. In the Internet age, the uncertainty and mobility of people's jobs, positions, income, status, etc. are more obvious than in the industrial age, and thus the risk perception is stronger. Faced with this high degree of uncertainty and risk, people will become more sensitive and vulnerable than before, so they need to have a safety talk, and someone needs to listen to their talk. At this point, social networks like Weibo, which are characterized by interactions with strangers, are indeed quite attractive and tempting. It will give people a certain illusion: that someone listens to and accompanies us, but does not need WechatPay continuous emotion and friendship for this. However, blindly escaping the self-expression of acquaintance circles, just immersing in the illusory "bubbles" created by oneself, can only temporarily relieve anxiety and stress. This kind of expression that sacrifices heart-to-heart and dialogue for the sake of uninterrupted connection and release, on the contrary, may make people fall into deeper "group loneliness".
Differences between Weibo & Wechat
The main user groups of Moments can be divided into college student parties, professionals and retired seniors. Their main needs are to understand the life dynamics of friends and interact with friends. At the same time, they also hope to learn the latest information through Moments. However, due to the large age span of the user group, Understanding ability and operation level are different, in order to reduce the cost of use, the simple functional design at this time is more in line with the core needs of such groups.
The user groups of Sina Weibo can be divided into big V, official Weibo (corporate, government, organization), personal self-media, and ordinary users. Big V is mainly sharing life, interacting with fans, and gaining income through their own influence to promote works, advertisements, etc.; official Weibo mainly publishes and disseminates the latest information, and individual corporate official microblogs increase corporate revenue through brand promotion; personal self-media Hope to expand the influence through original content, thereby gaining income; ordinary users mainly obtain information and understand the life dynamics of big V or friends.
American sociologist Granovetter proposed the concept of strong-weak relationship (1973, Granovetter), and social interaction on WeChat is a strong-relationship social. Strong relationship refers to the increased homogeneity of the individual's social network and close relationship. Some self-portraits are posted in the circle of friends. Elementary school classmates, aunts, and even company leaders will suddenly like them. Relatively speaking, Weibo is a kind of weak relationship social, social network homogeneity is weak, and there is not much emotional connection. It may be out of a certain hobby or region, in other words, it is a general acquaintance. On Weibo, you can spit on Weibo, because it is not that private here. Now that the Internet is developed, there are many people with virtual reality dependence, sharing their lives in the circle of friends, even facing the eyes of a large group of peers, and being "reviewed" by the seven aunts and eight aunts. Every spring, I am afraid of being pulled by my parents to say hello one by one. The overall WeChat relationship chain has entered a stable period, and more friends are added from the work environment. Compared with the general work-oriented trend of WeChat, most users still regard Moments as a private domain, and more than 60% of users choose to share personal life records with Moments.
Why is there such a big difference between WeChat and Weibo? Weibo is aimed at the entire network, even most young people of the same age, while WeChat is a software used for daily communication. The user's relatives, elders, classmates, friends, bosses, etc. are all targeted audiences who speak by themselves. Therefore, when we use Weibo, we often feel freer and speak more freely, but we feel the restrictions on WeChat. One of the reasons for this may be that we are playing different social roles. In WeChat Moments, we may need to play the role of a student, a junior or a subordinate, but on Weibo, we have no worries about playing these social roles.
According to the role theory, everyone is in a certain role position in the social relationship system, and the people around must always put forward all kinds of requirements and expectations for his attitudes and behaviours in accordance with the general pattern of social roles (Hindi, 2007). This is the "role expect". If a person’s attitude and behaviour deviate from the role expectations, it may cause objections or opposition from those around us, so we often adjust our behaviour and shape ourselves according to the expectations of others.
Anonymous world
The network environment is anonymous, and our social identity on the network is unidentifiable, which means that we cannot accurately know the gender, age, occupation and other personal information of individuals in social networking sites. The anonymity of the Internet will lead to de-individualization, that is, individuals lose their self-consciousness in the group, their ability to regulate themselves, and act in various atypical and anti-regular ways.
The clue filtering theory believes that the lack of social presence (less to feel the presence of others in the situation), the reduction of social cues (less visual and auditory cues in communicating with others) and deindividualization are the emergence of problem behaviours. In social networking sites such as Weibo, individuals interact anonymously with others, which will lead to a lack of presence, reduce individual self-awareness and lead to de-individualization. Therefore, we will pay less attention to self-expression or evaluation and reduce The restraint of one's own behaviour increases emotional response and impulsive behaviour. At the same time, the anonymity in the network environment will cause us to have more identification with the network environment, which will lead to more forms and greater degrees of self-disclosure. When the intimacy of the two parties is very low, anonymity will increase self-disclosure to a certain extent.
Actively express your thoughts and share your life on Weibo, but only show your open self in WeChat Moments. Is this phenomenon necessarily bad? actually not. Self-disclosure is a prerequisite for a healthy personality. It can enhance individual self-knowledge, help solve problems and benefit one's physical and mental health.
With the increasing diversity of contact groups in WeChat, WeChat Moments are no longer a “friends” circle in the true sense. It has gradually evolved from an acquaintance circle to a semi-acquaintance circle. In many cases, when publishing a dynamic, a variety of different relationships are considered, and the grouping is visible.
The beauty of Weibo is that it can jump between "acquaintances" and "strangers". Those who know your Weibo number are either familiar friends or strangers who don't know at all. You can relatively freely speak.

THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA
There was a time where I would have had to buy a magazine to find out what the latest celebrity gossip is, or sit in a group discussion or online forums to actively discuss politics or whatever is current. You also had to attend exhibitions, shows, and events to keep up to date with trends, art, and fashion. You still can do these of course. But today it’s so easy to just tweet your emotions, online shop without ever leaving your house, screenshot something and share on snapchat for thousand of people to see, or sell your soul on ebay! Haha
I was always someone who was quite comfortable being on cyberspace since Myspace and Hi5 days. Or remember MSN? When you could just chat to anyone who had a hotmail account? Those were the days! We used social media to connect to the world, mainly our friends and family, or to meet new people. Today we use it as a business tool! It is an amazing way to market yourself, no matter what line of business you are in. It is absolutely ground breaking! Instead of spending thousands of pounds on advertising in a magazine or a TV channel, you get to do it online on your own terms and conditions. Being your own marketing director!
Want to be a soap seller? Post anything soap, fragrance, and skincare related. You then step up your game by exploring scents, and if you want to create a soap that smells of lotus leaves, go travel to tropical countries and post pictures of your feet immersed in a pond of lotus flowers with the caption reading #inspired #canyouguess #nextscentdroppingsoon If you really want to go the extra mile, sign up to YouTube and start vlogging your life and get people to buy your soap, whether they smell nice or not! They will buy it, because they like you and believe in your soaps! You are not selling a product anymore, you are now a brand and you will need to market yourself! People don’t just want the soap, they want the history of where that soap has come from and why! It’s not about whether it will clean that fish curry smell off the hands. It’s about how they will then post it on their social media with the caption reading #newin #limitededition #waitedalongtimeforthis and then their followers commenting underneath with the caption reading #goals! Man I could go on.
You then have the types of people who use social media for entirely different reasons. They need social media to portray a life that is far from reality. What is wrong with this, is that the younger generation see this and get so influenced they set themselves these standards of living. I used to be one of them! Maybe I sometimes still am like that. I used to post the latest designer item I bought, what my partner spoiled me with, how much money I spent on this or that…until one day a mother of an 18 year old follower told me that her daughter has made them broke by asking for all the things I buy and post on my social media. It did really upset me. I don’t want my younger cousins to feel inadequate just because they cannot afford something I own, or feel pressured into buying this particular thing or having to look a certain way. If I don’t want my cousins to go through that, I certainly don’t want any other kid or anyone who follows me to go through that either. Saying this, I know my posts may not seem appropriate in other parts of the world. I once had someone from India write a long comment under one of my pictures having a go at me for not considering people from other cultures or backgrounds. Sometimes we think only our friends and family are looking at our posts, or maybe the friends of our friends, or our extended family, or people we knew back at Uni or worked with. Or an Ex-boyfriend, or our arch enemy. But we never think beyond that. I felt very defensive at first, and thought “well don’t look at my profile then” but then immediately understood the responsibility we carry if we choose to step into a role of influencers. It can be anyone! That soap seller. A mother. A bus driver. A fashion designer. A poet. A sound engineer. Anyone who uses social media to connect to the world, to sell a service they provide, to inspire others in the same position or field, or even share something personal, we all have a responsibility. To help the next generation. To raise them well. To teach them good things, and to provide the advice and support we never received when we were younger, because we did not have these platforms! Not just inspire or teach them, but have the responsibility to not sell a fake life! To not portray a fake you. To not boast about materialistic things! Be humble, be considerate, be inspirational, be kind, be respectful, be a role model! Would you not want your son or daughter to grow up in a better world?
Easier said than done.
A few years ago I used to check my social media every morning and everytime before I went to sleep. If I was in the waiting room at the doctors or sitting in the tube, all I would do is check my comments but naturally drift and look at other people’s profiles etc. I would easily feel envious and immediately compare myself to them or their lives. After several hours of stalking some of these profiles I would feel insecure and inadequate. I used to feel so negative. Then one day I unfollowed a tonne of people and only started following people who were inspirational, successful, motivational, ambitious, driven, and just very positive. I aspire to be like that everyday, and I just didn’t want to follow people anymore who kept posting things I couldn’t relate to or didn’t personally like! The mind is a powerful thing, and I have taught myself to only be around postive people and positive vibes, I would not be where I am in life if I didn’t stick to this. Therefore I myself only post hair and make up related things, postive quotes, a healthy living, and posts to do with my profession. And the occassional post about a hobby of mine.
My life is not perfect! And I apologise if I come across that way. I just feel that there is a thin line between being professional or personal, and after having fallen flat on my face in the past, I choose to be very strict with the amount of personal stuff I post. It may seem filtered and too prim and proper, but I would still rather show that than have my private life exposed. That is my choice and my right!
Sadly we get those who hide behind a screen and bully people. To write hate messages and intentionally hurt and cause pain. I am not going to even bother explaining why I think that happens. Who knows what goes on in that person’s head when they decide to go through the trouble of opening a fake profile and cyber attacking anyone they feel irritates them.
If your life goal is to have as many followers as you can get, there are many ways of doing that! A lot of them self explanatory really. But to be liked and respected is something you have to actually earn and work for! To organically grow your followers means loyalty and genuine love and support. Followers who believe in you and what you stand for. I myself follow a few business moguls and completely aspire to be like them. I follow them on every social media platform and they have made an impact in my life. In a very positive way.
But what would you do if some of these social media sites decided to shut down? Who would you be? What would you do? If you can genuinely say that your life or your career will not be impacted at all if Instagram, Facebook, or Youtube decided to disappear, then you know you are fine. More than fine! It will mean that you are successful, that you are content, and that you do not need the validation from anything or anyone else! In fact that is what I would call goals!
To conclude, social media has its pros and cons. Just like anything in life really, but it is up to us what we do with it, how we help the community, our community especially. How we use the power of our own social media platform to do good…

Researching cybersurveillance, I stumbled upon the Citizen Lab, and subsequently upon Deibert’s book, Black Code. First book to have read on Kindle, and there’s irony in this, as the more I read, the more data I produced to be collected and analyzed.
A few of the main ideas: To start with, code is law. As Marshall McLuhan postulated that the medium is the message and Harold Innis showed the bias of communications, we must understand that instructions encoded in software regulate what we can do. Second, a recent change is the movement away from searching the WWW to a push notifications environment where „information is delivered to us” through apps. Third, while in the beginning the internet seemed like a free place, hard to regulate, right now, many countries use censorship and block Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, etc. Internet censorship went from being regulated – like usual things – through law, to being regulated through code and software, and responsibility is put directly on the service providers. For example, China has a particular way of doing this: it sends back to the user an error message, as if the content itself doesn’t exist (Google found a way around this, suggesting users alternate spellings). We must begin to understand and connect the dots, as users and as citizens: the internet is international, but its cables are everywhere, its central nodes are everywhere – but mostly around the US – and the devices we use are from specific nations – bending to specific national laws. From a lawless place, it has became a place of many, many laws. Fourth, the future is at least partly out of the West’s hands. The growing populations of the rest of the world will have access to the net, along with living in increasing inequality due to climate change and capitalism’s mechanism,  so the question Deibert asks is, what kind of web will they craft? As the author shows, in some countries governments outsource to extra-legal intervention groups to deal with unrurly citizens. Coming back to corporations, Google has started issuing transparency reports, showing the number of requests it has received from governments to censor or remove content, and highlighting those it complied with or turned down (most requests are „other requests”, not issued through a court order). Most companies don’t tell users if their data is asked for by the government. In 2002 and 2004, Chinese government requested information on two dissidents from Yahoo!, who complied. When being sued by the families in the US, the company testified that it was following local law. Skype, as well, uses content filtering for China, and can be intercepted, although it promises end to end encryption. After 9/11, a key point in the cybersurveillance debate, governments felt entitled to more and more of citizen’s information, creating the false tradeoff: privacy vs security. Human Rights Watch found that the UN passed several resolutions urging member states to pass laws that expand government powers to „investigate, arrest, detain, and prosecute individuals at the expense of due process”. With enough data, a Minority Report future isn’t just dystopian fiction anymore – politically inclined individuals can be monitored before they do anything. Researcher Chris Soghoian pointed out that some companies even charge fees for „lawful access”, with automated process. Cybercrime is real, and just like most crime, its structure is knotted in complicated patterns and networks – many „cyberweapons” (spying software, malware for breaking in, or just hiring a black hat to hack someone) are cheap and easy to buy on the internet, and, as Deibert puts it, how can the West condemn the Syrian Electronic Army when it openly markets computer network attack products at trade shows? Besides, when cyberweapons are perceived as clean, there might be „strong pressures to adopt military over diplomatic solutions”.  Technology is multi-puroposed, and the same is used for surveillance of dangerous targets or of peace activists. Hacking used to have a more positive value – „of experimentation and exploration of limits and possibilities”. Technology can be seen not as a thing, but as a craft, inherently political. In the context of our constant connectedness, the increasing restrictions on cyberspace „are alarming”. The closing off of hardware and software and putting on copyright or other laws to diminish access to them are not only barriers to our freedoms, but ultimately to our security as well. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has found laws (in debate – Article 3 of DAAIS in Europe) that limit the publishing of research on security flaws. The denial of access to knowledge is increasing, together with the tools to dismantle it. One solution could take the form of a distributed model: mixture of multiple actors with governance roles, division of control with cooperation and consent, and restraint. Without humans „cyberspace would not exist”. Deibert pushes for a position of joint custodianship: we either degrade cyberspace, or we extend it. The responsibility is inter-generational.
I also finished Program or be programmed by Rushkoff. It’s a kind of manifesto for the digital age, with ten main “commandments”, which I quite enjoyed - an easy read, fast and recommended for anyone interested in what it means to live online. Rushkoff is a character, writing that “instead of optimizing our machines for humanity ... we are optimizing humans for machinery”. The base for the ten commands are the biases inherent in the technology we use. First, ‘do not always be on’, as machines live beyond time, from decision to decision, while we live in the present, continuously flowing, so, “by becoming “always on”, we surrender time to a technology that knows and needs no such thing”. Second, ‘live in person’, be local, be there, where you are - technology is biased towards distance, non-space, and scaling. Third, ‘you may always choose none of the above’, as technology draws lines that are too simple, categorizing or binary through our lives, we can refuse all options, or label freely, with tags. Fourth, ‘you are never completely right’, because, “thanks to its first three biases, digital technology encourages us to make decisions, make them in a hurry, and make them about things we’ve never seen ourselves up close”. It is “biased towards a reduction of complexity”. Rushkoff stresses that we should opt for a world in which we learn about our technology, not a world in which it learns about us. Fifth, ‘one size does not fit all’, because this hyper-abstracted model of internet business doesn’t work for smaller start-ups. Sixth, ‘be yourself’, because while anonymity can protect you, it can also make people behave irresponsibly, facilitating angry and revengeful mobs. Seventh, ‘do not sell your friends’, exposes the internet’s bias towards connection rather than content, and how businesses are making money off it. Eighth, ‘tell the truth’, “because this will increase our value to others”, and besides, lies don’t last long. Ninth, ‘share, don’t steal’, shows how our belief in open sharing has lead to the current business model based on ads, and how we should support the work we consume directly. Tenth, and most importantly, ‘program or be programmed’, because if you don’t understand the inner workings, or at least the superficial biases of the technology you use, it will bias you towards certain things, and you’ll never know why.
When I find the time, I plunge into Haruki Murakami’s short story collection, Men without Women - a gift from my cousin. I re-read the first story, which I hear a few years ago at a “Vocea cititorului” meeting - “Drive my car”. This time, I enjoyed it more. I guess I read the book with a kind of nostalgia, but also detachment. Murakami used to be a favorite of mine in high school, and although I’ve always sensed his novels are far better than his short stories, I have a feeling now I wouldn’t like those as much as I did back then. Men without women is a collection of stories about exactly this - lonely men, left by women in one way or another. I think they’re a bit like writing exercises, in which Murakami tries this and that, typical characters and settings of his, on jazz or Beatles music. None of them contain anything too surreal, maybe just a smokey atmosphere. “Yesterday” is about the narrator’s relationship with his peculiar friend and his girlfriend, “The independent Organ” is about a doctor that is constantly in romantic relationships, for short time and without engagement, with married women, “Sheherezade” contains a woman taking care of a man who can’t go out for some mysterious reason and telling him stories of her youth, “Kino” is about a man whose wife cheats on him so he leaves and opens a bar, “Samsa in love” is, well, a bug turned into a man, and “Men without women” is the narrative of a man who gets a phone call about the death of a love from his youth. I most liked “Kino”, for its emotional, fantastic ending, and “Samsa in love”, because it’s such a nice stretch of the imagination, and kind of lovely all in all.

Coronavirus Shock Cascades Through Indo-Pacific Region
[By Rory Medcalf]
The Covid-19 crisis heralds a decade of strategic volatility.
Now that the virus has emerged from China, societies, governments and international institutions must brace for contagion of all kinds—health, environmental, financial, cyber and the risk of conflict. The intense connectivity that has facilitated flows of trade, investment, resources, information and, above all, people now judders with vulnerability.
This international health emergency is a black swan event, an improbable catastrophe obvious in retrospect. It’s perhaps better termed a black elephant: a discontinuity so big and so inevitable that nations and corporations chose not to see it coming.
The crisis will shake up our Indo-Pacific region. The rapid evolution of this two-ocean strategic system and its accumulation of risk is the subject of my new book, Contest for the Indo-Pacific: why China won’t map the future (soon also to be released internationally as Indo-Pacific empire: China, America and the contest for the world’s pivotal region).
Any book making claims about this uncertain decade is a gift to fate. Mine went to print at the start of January, when knowledge of the true nature of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan was so suppressed it may not have reached even the Chinese leadership.
This book is not so much about today’s problems as about how the reinterpreted past and plausible projections of the future can illuminate policy choices in the present. Current events amplify its main contentions.
We need to transcend the false binary that the Indo-Pacific dynamic is purely a contest between China and America. The Indo-Pacific has long been a place of multipolar connectivity and contestation, a melting pot of many entrepôts, where risk of all kinds ignores imagined boundaries.
The book revisits the deep history of maritime Asia to underscore that this has never been a China-centric region. The Indo-Pacific is too vast for hegemony, and this empowers middle players such as Australia, Japan, Indonesia and India with more agency than they once appreciated.
Addressing the threats to health and social order is the priority, but governments must also anticipate cascading shocks to the balance of power among nations, and the credibility and legitimacy of governments to their own populations.
Translating human anxiety and suffering into the lexicon of geopolitical competition, threat and, it has to be said, strategic opportunity is a delicate matter. The outbreak has caused lasting damage to the People’s Republic of China, which was already weaker than it liked to look.
The shock is rattling China’s economy, exposing the fragility of the strategic weight that has intimidated so many other countries in recent years. Even as China’s navy, air force, fishing fleets and paramilitary coastguards extend their Indo-Pacific push, new data reflects an extraordinary decline in commercial shipping to and from Chinese ports.
Companies are desperately reconsidering supply chains. Diversification is now necessity, not just strategic aspiration. Suddenly the logic of many belts and many roads is plain.
Domestically, the disaster is shaking confidence in Xi Jinping’s leadership, and in the competence and intent of the Chinese Communist Party.
This is a deeply human tragedy, and the sacrifice and stoicism of medical professionals and ordinary people in China, and now many other infection zones, is to be admired. So too was the willingness of citizens like the late Dr Li Wenliang to risk everything in the name of truth, trying to provide early warning to each other, the authorities and the world. Covid-19 is a reminder that China will struggle to maintain the internal obedience and international sway it needs for its Indo-Pacific strategic ambitions.
Internationally, China’s response hurts its image as a robust partner in tackling shared threats, a stark signal for countries that had blithely tied their fortunes to Xi’s strategy for geoeconomic influence. Beijing has long encouraged narratives that the Belt and Road Initiative will bring health benefits, among many other gifts.
Suddenly, from Iran to Italy and beyond, China’s expanding power and influence looks much more double-edged, as Parag Khanna, author of The future is Asian, has been among the first to acknowledge, in a confronting article noting the parallel Silk Road transmission belts for coronavirus and the 14th-century plague.
Covid-19 arrived in a time of deep mistrust and rivalry.
China’s new normal has been to proclaim a relentless rise, asserting its interests against others, from the South China Sea to cyberspace. Its repression and censorship have become both tools and terrain of struggle against democratic nations and Chinese dissidents alike. It’s becoming clear that such truth suppression sabotaged the response to a local epidemic, with worldwide repercussions.
Now we see the party-state stumble, in need of help, pivoting to protect itself and the world from a common threat.
Of course, the other big powers in the Indo-Pacific have their own maladies. The United States is desensitized to political trauma within, struggles to convince allies the great republic doesn’t mean what the president says, and is yet to define a true strategy for competing with China in a post-primacy future.
Normally a summit of the world’s two largest democracies would be a rallying point for world order and liberal values. Not so President Donald Trump’s visit to India, though it did affirm that a China-wary India no longer hesitates to embrace American power.
India, for all its youth and diversity and promise, is in conflict with itself. Mobs extolling Hindu extremism brought carnage to the streets to Delhi, at the very least on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s watch.
It will become incredible, literally, to build international partnerships of mutual respect and rules-based stability—principles underscoring the Indo-Pacific solidarity of India, America, Australia, Japan, Indonesia and others—if those values are not guarded at home.
There’s sadly little sign yet that the common threat of contagion risk in health, environment, finance, cyber or other security matters is reducing strategic rivalry. For the middle players that want strategic competition to be managed in ways short of conflict, now’s the time to emphasise coexistence and cooperation based on shared interests, mutual respect and honest communication.
In 1348, after the plague reached England and France amid their Hundred Years’ War, there ensued effectively a seven-year truce. Exhaustion, depopulation and quarantine drove this peace, more than any enlightened statecraft. Still, it’s a reminder that a profoundly human crisis is a chance for nations to reorder their priorities and how they define their interests.
It shouldn’t be beyond the wit of 21st-century diplomacy to draw from coronavirus at least something of a vaccine against other strategic shocks.

Smart Home Security: Control, Energy Efficiency, Customization, and Hacking
Installing Smart security systems saves lives
protect your investment
Building or buying your dream home is no small feat. It’s an investment of time, attention, energy, and of course, income. Protecting that investment is a no brainer. State of the art home security is a no brainer. That’s why even at the start of the decade, 18 million home security systems had been installed in the U.S.
There are dozens of practical applications for a security system: door entry detection, security cameras, window break detection, fire alarms, CO detectors, flood sensors, etc. Most homeowners are used to juggling the many facets of their system individually. That means arming the alarm system through an on-wall panel, checking the status of the cameras through their own specific app, and checking their detector's battery life status manually.
Consider human error
That leaves a lot of room for human error and certainly explains why 54% of home security system owners are unsure of how to operate their system. Technology is here to serve us and when systems become overcomplicated, they lose convenience and therefore, their purpose becomes squandered.
But we’d like you to imagine a smarter security system. One that goes beyond just the practical use of keeping bad things from happening. Imagine a system that actually had a positive impact on your home’s operation, convenience, and efficiency.
Let’s explore some of the ways that a fully-integrated, smart security system can outperform your standard manual system…
Easy Access
With a fully integrated system, you will have access to security camera footage, door locks, gates, garages, the smart doorbell, and your alarm systems, all from your personal device. As long as you have your phone on hand, you can check in on your home from anywhere in the world.
And that extends beyond just uses for safety. That means granting access to visitors and increasing convenience tenfold when you go out of town.
Occupancy Detection: Safety, Efficiency, and Priority Users
Being able to access and control your home's entry points and security with such ease means that when you do get notified that movement or occupancy has been detected at an unexpected time, you are completely in control.
If you sense foul play, you can alert the authorities before a break-in is even detected. Or, more harmlessly, let’s say the visitor is someone you know or is delivering a package, you can communicate with them through your smart doorbell and choose to grant them access to your home or drop the package safely and avoid theft.
Sensors throughout the home and personal device locations detecting occupancy do not only serve to protect you from intruders and alert you of visitors, although that is their most implicit function. These sensors can also assist you in transforming your smart home into a green home.
When no one is home, or even present in certain areas of the home, sensors can trigger things like lights and thermostats to go to their “away” settings. This is something you can choose to or automate or simply check the status of when you are away. Ultimately, having your home know whether or not you are in can save energy and money.
Especially for those living in Texas, as the majority of our clients do, we are paying some of the highest average electrical bills in the country. The craziest part of getting a utility bill for over $125 is not even knowing what’s draining the electricity in your home. Is it the lights, the washer-dryer, kitchen utilities, TV or sound system? Who knows.
Well, education is the first step to efficiency. With occupancy detection, you can not only greatly increase your awareness about the goings-on in your home, but you can also give priority to certain occupants.
Based on whose personal devices are present in the home, access to devices, bandwidth, and control will be prioritized in accordance with the hierarchy you set. That means that the downstairs office video conference takes precedence to the gaming party on Xbox upstairs when it comes to network access and speed.
Custom Scenes: Away and Stay Settings
When all of the technology in your home is wired and integrated into one central system, the opportunities for automation based convenience are abundant. You can create custom home scenes that synchronize all of the technology of a room to a certain mode.
For example, dinner time may turn off all of the lights in the home except the kitchen and dining room, turn on some light, smooth music, set the thermostat to a specific temperature and power down all gaming devices and TVs to signal to the kids it’s time to eat.
As it pertains to security, there are two major home “scene” settings we want to highlight for you: away and stay. By letting your home know that you are away, all of the tasks you might have previously running around doing before you walk out the door will be done for you. Your system can, for example, turn the thermostat up, turn off all the lights, lock the doors, arm the security system, set the pool in cleaning mode, run the irrigation, etc.
But if you’re in for the night and you want your home to know you are here to stay, it can still lock up and secure the home for you but may not automate the lights to turn off or expect the home to have zero occupancies.
These two settings will streamline your routine, save you time, and ensure that everything is in its place when you step away or settle in.
Energy Monitoring: What’s Using Watt?
All of this awareness, sensing, detection, and automation culminates in the energy monitoring feature. Energy monitoring does just that - it keeps an eye on your energy. But it’s more nuanced than that.
Our energy monitoring system will tell you exactly how many watts of energy your home is using at any given time, what specifically is using those watts, what your usage is looking like for the month, and gives you an instant reading when things change.
When your security system is in sync with the rest of the home, you maximize efficiency by minimizing waste. You can’t forget that lights have been left on when you can see what’s on in real-time. You can’t waste cold air when the thermostat knows no one is home. You can’t overwater your lawn when sensors check the soil and weather channel before triggering the irrigation system. You get the idea.
The whole idea is to remove the possibility of human error and allow integrated automation to keep your home running smoothly on its own. Energy use is a big part of that. We’ve gone as far as putting the hot water heater, coffee pot, and HVAC system all of a schedule based on the day of the week to reach maximum possible efficiency.
Hack my Home, I Dare You
With total access to your home on your personal device and door locks that open via WiFi, smart homes create a whole new security issue: Cybersecurity. The hacking of smart homes has become a hot topic in the media, warning homeowners that the more invested they become in the internet of things, the more susceptible they are to hacking.
This risk is completely valid and substantial. When you connect a myriad of household devices such as lightbulbs, vacuums, and pool cleaners to the WiFi network, yes, you increase the number of avenues in which your home can be hacked.
What most people don’t understand is that the majority of vulnerabilities with hacking happen during the Z-wave setup process while you’re “discovering devices” on setup protocols. After that, the managed network is the security point that blocks hackers from getting to the control and feedback portion of the devices.
Access boils down to the network. Only those with an in to the network have control of the home features connected to it so the key to creating a cyber-safe home, is creating an incredibly safe network.
The WiFi network of a home is always the first place we start with any project. That’s because a smart home can not exist without a network and so it is absolutely essential that customers understand the importance of creating a reliable, managed network before they jump into any of the flashier smart home features.
We urge all of our customers to buy their own equipment for said network: modem, router, the works. We trust Ubiquiti for all of our installs because they create heavy-duty, dependable, top of the line equipment.
We also hardwire the vast majority of customer devices and features into the home. Wiring a home may seem like an outdated practice but you’re going to have to trust us on this one. “While wireless is convenient and popular, ask any electronic systems contractor and they'll tell you that a wired connection is more reliable, secure and consistent.”
That’s because when we wire a home, we exponentially reduce the factors that could cause a home to go offline. Think of it like having a backup generator in case of a storm. It’s just the smart option.
By building your own managed network that you allow you integrator to construct for you, you take out the middle man, removing outside sources with access to your network, and become the sole owner fo your cyberspace.
To test the reliability of the system, we have hired hackers to attempt and break into our home systems and no one had been able to because of the secure and personal way in which they are built for each home.
Smarter Homes goes above and beyond to ensure the security of our systems. Safety is the number one priority of Smart Homes. Convenience, luxury, and energy efficiency can only exist and serve the customer once the home is safe and sound.
