#c!wilbur analysis
Text
c!wilbur is so messy and worn and tired and clumsy and fraying like a stuffed animal who has been taken everywhere. he’s messed up and fallen down so hard he never thought he’d rise from it. he was a president, he’s a brother, a son, a best friend, and a musician. he baked a cake that could invent salt, he wrote a shitty love song out of spite, he summoned god, and he started a burger van of all things. but most importantly he is loved. he is loved so much that a lonely teenager stayed and told him there was good in him. he is loved so much that people continued to write letters to him after he died. c!wilbur is loved so much that when his brother was about to face his enemy, one of his greatest fears, he said “let’s make wilbur proud.” and most importantly he is loved so much that even through everything, his legacy lives on. it lives on in the people who stood with him in lmanburg, and their memories of him. he is so loved that he was never forgotten, and I hope one day he knows that.

I don’t have the energy to go on a full rant rn but I just want to say that cwilbur is an incredibly nuanced character and his choices/actions/etc cannot fit into a black and white good vs evil and attempting to do so is drastically misinterpreting his character

God idk Wilbur being commonly associated with dark academia aesthetics and vibes while tommy is commonly associated with cottagecore
And the way that dark academia kinda can romanticise a certain kind of self destruction with like caffeine addictions and all-nighters and things like that. The way dark academics sort of dedicate their entire being to studying and the way that c!wilbur dedicated his entire being to L’Manberg. Literature in dark academia and c!Wilbur’s Chekhov’s Gun - the way it all comes back to self-destruction.
And then there’s cottagecore. A simple way of life which values self-sustainability with things like sewing and baking and farming. Away from all the drama. Tommy wants nothing more than safety with his pets in a little house and he whole-heartedly believed that was achievable because he had lived it, hadn’t he? In L’Manberg?
The way that Tommy’s dreams would not have been proven possible without the suffering Wilbur had put himself through to get there. It didn’t work out in the end but it at least made Tommy believe happiness was achievable. (Tommy didn’t know Wilbur cried about it every night.)

Kateis-cakeis wins best lore archivist in my heart, he's a whole legend, and even though he left the fandom, his work to retrieve c!Wilbur quotes with such detail as he did was absolutely fantastic
o7 to Kateis, if it weren't for him, being a c!Wilbur analyzer would be much harder and much less precise probably
The way he made the quotes so readily accessible to use direct evidence of everything with specifications on the exact stream and time of the quote? Absolute fucking legend behaviour
All c!wilburians, don't forget Kateis' contributions

NO AND THEN THE WAY THAT L'MANBURG SLOWLY BECAME A THESEUS' SHIP DIRECTLY REFLECTS THE CHARACTERIZATION OF C!WILBUR AT THE TIME, WITH THE ORIGINAL L'MANBURG REPRESENTING HIS IDEALS AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS OTHERS!! HE SEES HIMSELF SLOWLY BECOMING WHAT HE HATES AND HE DOESN'T WANT TO CAUSE MORE PAIN THAN WHAT HE HAD ALREADY CAUSED AND DUE TO HIS MENTAL STATE HE THINKS THAT THE ONLY WAY OUT IS TO DIE. L'MANBURG ITSELF IS A METAPHOR FOR WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU LEAVE YOUR MENTAL STATE ALONE ANAD DO NOT GET HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT!! EVEN IF YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE THE "LEADER" AND "IN CHARGE"!!!

I know ppl said this before, but c!wilbur's story ending being anticlimatic and a bit dissatisfying is actually the only satisfying way to end his charcter arc holy shit .
and I've been thinking about this dramatic principle that is kind of the opposite of chekov's gun called shaggy dog story, which is a long-winded story or anecdote with extesnive descriptions of mostly irrelevnent stuff happening that ends in an anticlimax. shaggy dog stories create certain expectations for it's audience (by bringing attention to things that won't matter for the ending) and then don't meat those expectations or meat them in an unexpected/dissatisfying way.
I'm not saying c!wilbur's story is a shaggy dog story, that whould defeat the whole purpose of him escaping the narrative (also shaggy dog stories often aim to have a meaningless ending and c!wilbur's ending is very meaningful), but I think it's interesting to look at the story of the guy obessed with chekov's gun through the lense of an contrary dramatic principle

Hot take but people saying that c!Tommy should go to Utah/c!Wilbur should've taken him with kinda,,, defeats the whole purpose of that stream? c!Wilbur is trying to step away from everything related to L'manberg because that is what declined his mental state in the first place. Of course he cares for c!Tommy, but this is his healing arc, not theirs together.
c!Wilbur needs to heal first before anything else. If c!Tommy came along it would do more harm than good, as c!Tommy still has people back in the SMP who he cares for. c!Wilbur does too, but he's choosing to heal first instead of staying for other people. That is a big step for his character.
This isn't about "them being together", it's about c!Wilbur taking a step back and finally letting himself heal from the cycle of self-destruction he created.

Okay this is a copy and paste from somewhere else so forgive me if it’s like, not the most coherent. I wrote it yesterday after the stream to get my thoughts out and I might write a more coherent/in depth version of the future but this thought has been in my mind for ages way before the lore stream. Just the lore stream felt like it completely canonized my thoughts on it in my humble onion.
I’ll also write my general thoughts on the finale later at some point I promie. (Edited: changed the formatting a bit :])
CW Wilbur Finale Spoilers
It’s All Projection
Everything Wilbur did was projection onto other people things he thought/feared about himself. Villainize the other to distant it from himself
“Don’t trust those american dogs”
Don’t trust me, I’m a liar
“I defeated Eret”
Please don’t notice my other failures as a leader and a person
“I put you in the role of President out of spite”
because I didn’t want to be President of something I would destroy
“I don’t want you to pity me”
I am pitiable
Every rivalry, every conflict, every moment he spent spiting at others it was always at himself
His apologies, his fighting for Tommy, Defending him, him admitting he was scared and sad, him admitting he’s a bloody fucking American
It was him being honest with himself for the first time and not deflecting
He’s the Traitorous, American Dog who was sad and scared and lonely and never truly meant to be a leader
And That’s how it ended, he couldn’t stay because he wasn’t the man to protect people. He never was
He wasn’t a leader or protector or anything of the sort.
He was just a Gas Station employee inspired by his adopted younger brother to build something new and beautiful.

While we’re here I wanna say it’s annoying that a lot of the things c!wilbur is villainized for during Pogtopia are just… really unhealthy trauma responses and reactions to trauma ex: Paranoia, pushing people away, smoking/ drinking, lashing out and being fucking suicidal.
Btw:
ALL OF THESE ARE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF PTSD.
Which makes sense because even before Manbrug blew up c!wilbur was heavily traumatized. He already had issues with self esteem was betrayed by his friend in the final control room was the president at only 23 years old (cc!wilbur said he was 27-25but I’m not sure if that was part of scrapped ages) and got exiled from his own nation and shot in the back while he ran.
Dose this excuse the way he acted in pogtopia? Of course not. But it adds depth and context to his action rather then watering him down as just evil and crazy TM.

“c!wilbur was not a villain, and calling him an evil abusive manipulator is misinterpreting his character and showing no respect for his portrayal of mental illness” and “c!wilbur made a lot of mistakes and needs to be somewhat held accountable/apologize for his actions” are two things that can and need to coexist

The way that Wilbur, this suicidal man who still struggles to find a reason to keep living, the first one to actually commit suicide on the server has been forced to stand and watch as other people go just like him, powerless to stop them in some way or another while trying to make things right. With Ranboo, he was shouting for him to way just a bit longer, let him reach the plate, he could fix this; with Fundy, he didn't expect it, he wanted to leave him with one last happy thought of his father even if they could never reconciliate
And now, when he stood in front of Tommy, that kid whom he always told that he was way too reckless, that his life was worth more than a revolution, that nobody would blame him for the destruction of L'manburg and Wilbur would make sure of that. He stood in front of his brother, always carrying himself as so strong, and watched him admit that Dream brought him to almost commit to a suicide attempt
And for once, Wilbur didn't wish to be powerless.
He was immediately daydreaming about destroying Dream for what he did to his brother, for breaking the strong kid he once knew, he wouldn't stand on the sidelines if that could be helped
And the fact that the ending ends up with him using both the written word from Dream's own hands to win ideologically and his own life as a bargaining chip because his life means more to other people than it does to him and he'd use it to avenge the near loss of another's life in a heartbeat is such a neat way to summarize his character in a way

ok so c!Wilbur in all his resent lore streams Wilbur been putting a block down and standing on it to make himself taller. i have two theory's as to why
he doesn't feel like hes in crontoll anymore. even his own life and death is out of his controll. Wilbur killed him self. he ended itl. that was his final hurrah. and then dream brought him back. and yes Wilbur worships dream like a hero, dream also took away Wilbur's choice. in the end he chose to die no matter how horrible limbo was. he didn't chose to come back.
so he stands on the blocks above people to make himself feel important. he only value as a human being was the tital as presentment or revolutionary so he feels like eh need to be fiscally above people to be listened to and respected

Gonna talk about the scene of c!Eret and c!Wilbur throwing away things that were important to them. Every time I say Eret or Wilbur, I mean c!Eret and c!Wilbur
I've seen some criticism but honestly this was my favorite scene of the entire stream. I think it was the moment both of them needed. It's going to be hard for Wilbur and maybe it would've meant a bit more if he had chosen to throw it away himself. But I think that making a move to better yourself to prove that you're going to change is just as meaningful.
The TNT is Wilbur's vice. As long as Wilbur has the TNT, he's going to subconsciously think that it's a tool to fall back on. It's an option if all else fails. He needed to get rid of the TNT at some point, one way or another, and I feel like most of us assumed that he'd be getting rid of it himself. Or that someone close to him would tell him to, like c!Tommy
To be made to do that though by Eret? The first person to ever betray him? His ex-enemy, who barely knows him (Eret made it pretty clear that she didn't fully understand Wilbur, shouting at him for things he already knows)? It shows that this vice of his is a glaring issue. It's something that concerns everyone around him, even those who by all means, should not care.
Eret telling him to get rid of the TNT must've been a shock to him, making him realize that he could not carry on like this.
Instead of getting rid of the TNT being the end of his healing arc, being a sign that he's healed, it's a sign that he's allowing himself to heal. Under most circumstances, you can't heal while having a harmful coping mechanism as your fallback.
I don't think that it's "Ripping away his last support mechanism." It might look that way to him right now. But Eret is doing the same thing as him. Giving up a symbol that meant a lot to her to show that he's changing. He's showing Wilbur that it's not going to be the end of the world. Plus, Wilbur does have some people he can fall back on. He still has Phil. While his relationship with Tommy is very strained and unhealthy at the moment, Wilbur probably does know that Tommy will still be there for him.
Eret's not ripping something harmless away from Wilbur. They're definitely not ripping something helpful away. They're trying to help Wilbur let go of something that's unhealthy for him

Yknow one of my favorite things about that lore stream is this (probably unintentional) parallel. As c!wilbur was revived, what did he say? "This is my sunrise" and as he was on the peninsula, explaining to c!Tommy why he needed to leave, the sun was setting. And by the time he had left, the sun was rising again. The sun sets as his narrative on the dream smp closes. And it rises again as another story begins.
