I’ve probably fallen for the front Nathan puts up but maybe I’ve fallen for the consequences of his actions while masking? Idk. Maybe it’d help if someone elaborated (aka pls feel free to go off about Nathan but I still may end up disagreeing depending on the results)

Ohhh my god I didn’t mean to write so much but I have so uhh fair warning I have Feelings on the subject:

I have a lot of complicated feelings about Nathan the same way I have a lot of complicated feelings about Heroes, lol. Don't get me wrong, though I may seem like a grumpy fucker, the show holds a v special place in my heart and has for 16 years, it does mean a lot to me but at the same time there are whole chunks of it that I find just bad/stupid/infuriating, and that also colours my perspective on characters too -

I actually think villain!Nathan could have been done well/interestingly, for example, and the building blocks were there - Nathan is someone who is incredibly self-loathing about his power in particular and believes it makes him some kind of freak, and makes comments to similar effect in s1 about how he thinks they should all be locked up etc, so I can see how he could slide into that villain lets-lock-everyone-up thing if done well, but the way it's done in s3 is a mess and comes out of nowhere and makes no fucking sense lol, like he’s misguidedly going along with his dad’s idea of giving people powers, then peter knocks over his Vats of Stuff and for no clear narrative reason Nathan decides to do a 180 and like dob everyone in to the President lol, like it could have been done well as a “tragic self-hating villain who you kind of understand but his path of destruction is still bad” thing, not a “I guess he’s just an Evil-Now Kind of Metaphorical Racist” lol.

so I'm like ehhh *handwave* whatever, I don't even think of it as, like, in character, as opposed to the General Jerkery he displays in say, s1, which I do think is representative of him, or at least the front he puts up -

ALSO, it's not that I think 'Nathan is constantly masking/pretending to be someone he's not (which is true) so therefore he did nothing wrong' - he still hurt people and did morally questionable things lol, that doesn't absolve him. I just think it's easy to see why he is the way he is and it adds a lot to his character. Nathan has layers! Nathan is like an onion! Oh no I'm writing an essay! Lol.

At the same time I'd like to emphasise that despite being a Proud Nathan Apologist, I'm not like "Nathan has never done anything wrong ever in his life!" - he can be a jerk and a shitty person, he's done plenty of Bad Things and fucks up near-constantly, and I actually love him more for it - I love him bc while I find him deeply sad and sympathetic, he's a very complicated, morally grey character (well, I'd argue morally *confused*, lol) with so much compacted self-loathing that he takes it out on other people too, and that's Bad, and yet he's still so, so tragic to me (he's my poor little meow meow OK, I get to woobify him, SOMEONE has to - half the fandom are Sylar apologists which is their god-given Blorbo Right which I will defend, but I don't rly care for him so I'm just like *eyeroll* well *I* don't give a fuck that he's Sad or forgive him that easily lol. So I do 100% see the other side of the coin lmao.)

Anyway all that said (oh my god that was a long preamble sorry), it's easy to see how people miss it if they're not that interested in Nathan as a character tbh bc I think you need the context of like, s2/early s3 Nathan to see the full picture, but basically all of his arc in s1 is about how Nathan is wearing a mask all the time of being this kind of Jerkass Alpha Male I'm a Totally Normal Man that he's been expected to be his whole life

(see the way Angela blatantly manipulates and controls his whole life and simultaneously treats him like he's about 5 years old and a stubborn child to be given orders ("that's my boy") and told off, while also being vaguely creepy and clingy in a "you're the man of the house now" kinda way, see "everything we are is what people expect us to be, if you take that away nothing means anything" and his admission that without Peter he doesn't even really have a sense of self, cf. his COMPLETE spiral into rock bottom in s2 without him, see later in s3 Arthur's "I made you" and Nathan's admission that everything he's ever done in life has been because of his dad - becoming a lawyer, becoming a politician (which I genuinely think Nathan doesn't even LIKE or want to do lol. I'm serious, it’s presented as this key facet of his character but I don't think Nathan is even that Ambitious deep down or particularly, like, wants to be President or whatever - it's all what he keeps being TOLD he should want, which he goes along with), like even who he was set up to marry, apparently. His life is being like, puppeteered from his fuckin birth by his terrifyingly morally bankrupt parents who experimented on him and "wanted to be better than God". Jaysus. Ahem anyway this parenthetical got LONG-)

Anyway his arc is about how actually, that isn't the person he actually is at all. He feels like he has to be this Persona of Alpha Ambitious Arrogant Very Normal Heterosexual High-Flying (loool) Successful Manly Man but actually, the main choice he makes, which changes everything, is that even though this has all been conditioned into him from day 1, he does what he's told like a good little attack dog, he *chooses* Peter/love (and aren't they the same thing? Awww) over all of that, precisely when no-one expects him to. Of course, Claire is no small factor in this (see: how his parents LET HIM THINK HIS CHILD WAS DEAD FOR 14 YEARS, how he does clearly want to see her but then gets too overwhelmed to go through with it and conceal-don't-feel nearly cries in the back of the car on his way back (even tho he rightfully looks bad in Claire's perception at that moment), how Angela literally says that she knows that deep down under his gruff exterior "you're a sap" and if he sees her "sad weepy eyes", "you're gone, you're finished". Like Yeah, precisely lol). It's another tangent but she really is the one who makes him realise there IS a way to break free from everything that's been suddenly heaped on him re: The Plan in s1 (shout out to my babygirl Claire I love you so much Claire mwah).

Anyway there's that, but then you start to see just hoooow Mentally Ill Nathan blatantly, actually is (plus, very clearly ND/autistic to me in a lot of ways, which the masking is a serious part of too). In S2 obviously he's in just a complete black hole of depression, is hallucinating his Burned Self as this kind of conceptualisation of all the things he hates about himself, and literally self-harms because of it (punching the mirror), and then in early s3, when he's literally died and been brought back to life, has a full-on mental breakdown and is just literally so fragile and vulnerable and it makes me so sad - never mind the weird religious mania and delusions, he's terrified bc he's seeing visions of a man he hates and fears (which yeah is just his dad fucking with him deliberately, but like - yeah that’s WORSE) - no one really seems to like, care if he's OK at all, he pleads with Future Peter to tell him what "the right thing to do" is because he literally does not know (see "morally confused" as I said earlier, he straight up doesn't have much of an innate conception of what the "right thing" even is) and gets basically no help, like this man is NOT OK and to top it all off he has a complete mental breakdown LIVE ON TELEVISION and gets handpicked to become a Senator literally because someone witnesses that and decides that he looks like he'd be easy to manipulate and control (like, He Is Not In An OK Place! Let The Man Rest! Get Him Some Therapy, from a Person who Knows About Powers Preferably so He Doesn't Have To Mask Further! I'm So Angry Oh My God!) and like. Yeah. Yeah.

Anyway wrapping back around to the original question I guess (again I… don't know how this got this long. Clearly I Feel Things About This lol) I feel like a lot of people just take that surface-level Nathan, the one who's just a kinda callous jerk sometimes and doesn't really have much to redeem him, at face value and. hate him. and don't like Look Underneath! At the Layers! He's So Tragic and textually there was really no way for him to like, Live and Be OK. Like the only road for him was death and he didn't (despite all the jokes about how many times Nathan dies lol) get a Chance to get past all of that and feel, like, Relatively OK, Ever. Oh god you can fit so much repression inside this man *slaps Nathan's head* and then he kept being repressed despite tentative attempts to like Come Out of The Metaphorical Power Closet (sidenote Nathan is ostensibly meant to be like textually straight but he has literally such a Closeted Gay Man storyline that it's almost textbook 1-to-1 allegory. That's A Long Meta For Another Time though) and then he died :( and maybe he did a few war crimes too but that whole thing was stupid, man, idc

This is like fucking ungodly long now lmao and you DON'T have to read all of this but like. Anyway if you still just don't rly like Nathan or care about him as a character, 's all fine and I'm not gonna convince you otherwise bc everyone has Faves and Unfaves and Whatever, Blehs. I laughed so hard on my own smut fics that was so long ago. I never published it b/c it wasn't link with any of the chapters for Stand By Me.

I did a Megatron x OC human dark fic, very smut NSFW. It's also been a long time too. I was like damn: how did I become so naughty 🤣

I was going to change my title for that project and just be aware it will be a little bit more dark than intended.

Some people don't like dark fics. Some like fun fics. You take your pick. I had lots of people that complain I was a twisted whiner writer. Well, officially I was from Roleplay. I got something simple for others:

Don't read if you don't like. Don't get knarky with me. And if you don't like my friend's fics or other peoples stories, do a favour and walk away.

It's pretty annoying. We just try to enjoy stories, write them to our hearts contents. Wonder why writers quit? B/c people got real petty. Nose out. Keep on writing. No matter what people say, just saying.

Peter Parker was dead, and no one knew who had killed him.

The police investigation was ongoing. So was the Avengers’ investigation, although their questions were slightly different. The police wanted to know who had killed Peter Benjamin Parker, a student from Empire State University who’d last been seen walking home from his Tuesday night chemistry lecture. The Avengers wanted to know who had killed Peter Parker, but they also wanted to know who had killed Spider-Man.

For the twentieth time, Bucky was reviewing the security camera footage from the bodega where Peter had last been seen alive. He’d bought a soda and a bunch of bananas. He’d stepped out the door. He’d been approached by a man -- roughly six feet tall, white, clean-shaven, wearing a hoodie that left most of his face in shadow. The man had said something. Peter had shaken his head and stepped out of the camera’s field of view, and the man had turned and walked in the opposite direction. After that, no one had seen Peter for two days, until his body was found floating in the East River

Well, most of his body. Whoever had killed him had removed his brain.

The autopsy hadn’t been able to determine the cause of death. Peter hadn’t drowned. There was no evidence that he’d been shot or stabbed or strangled or poisoned. In fact, apart from the fact that his skull had been cut open, there wasn’t a mark on him, and the medical examiner was fairly certain that that had been done after he was already dead.

That left neither the police nor the Avengers with much information to go on.

There was no evidence that the man outside the bodega had laid a hand on Peter, and the police search for him as a witness had been unsuccessful; there were a lot of six-foot-tall, clean-shaven white men in the city. But something kept pulling Bucky back to the security tape anyway.

Her job description might not include the word assassin these days, but Bucky was pretty sure that some of what she and Natasha did for SHIELD still qualified. She had seventy-five years’ worth of experience, whether she’d wanted it or not, and some well-honed assassin’s instinct was screaming at her that the man in the video was the key.

“I’m goin’ out,” she told Steve that night. “Gonna look around. I just-- I got a hunch. I think I’m gonna try listenin’ to it.”

“Alone?” Steve said.

She nodded.

“Okay,” he said. “Just make sure you keep in touch.”

“I will,” she said.

She geared up, grabbed a radio, and headed out into the wet night.

With a sigh, he closed his eyes and opened his hands. The contents of the room, including himself began to float upward into the empty air. Everything was suspended a moment before it all came crashing to the floor in a wave of dizziness.

Farah said she would be meeting her at the station. Malina was thankful for her suspected return, having felt rather disconnected from the others in the base. Finally, Malina found the bench where they were to meet, feeling relieved without realizing that she’d planted herself right next to a large potted plant. Once noticing, she placed her hand upon the rim of the pot and the leaves grew subtly greener.

“We’re too exposed..” she mutters, her eyes flickering around the surrounding area to determine if there’s anywhere to take cover. Her eyes lands on a car, the small but sturdy kind in a dark blue that reminds her of the midnight sky right after twilight. Vera is still holding her breath, not entirely sure whether the brush with the human rebels were actually able to inspire some fear in her, or if she’s only shocked really that they would go this far. Attacking the city a second time. Using bombs.. From what she was told of the previous attack, power went out then too. Explosions were set off before as well. As a mistress she really should feel something at the thought of their sacred, well functioning city being made into a target and blown to pieces by humanity, though for the time being she can’t muster much more than a dull expectance. No matter what a human endures, there will always be those among them willing to die for their beliefs. Its a shame for those who aren’t who will later have to pay the price right alongside their revolutionary brothers and sisters. 

So far, the male beside her has remained silent. The sight of the brand on his neck might be the very reason why. As Vera locks eyes with him, she tries to decipher what his intentions might be. Is he tempted to flee now? Will he turn and run to catch up with the humans, aid them in all the havoc they might bring now that he has the chance to rejoin with them? “There’s a car over there we can take cover in. If you want to come that is..”

i love sylar. honestly, #2 favorite character on the show. hate his ending.

i understand it, but boy do i hate it. i can really see where the writers were coming from. sylar is this great, deep, but also deeply disturbed character. you can’t get around the fact that he’s: a) a psychopath b) a serial killer and c) a mass murderer. AND YET, fans are so taken with him, and he has been humanized to a point (ex: categorizing his nature with “the hunger” and showing that it can affect anyone, even the biggest protagonist of the show, peter) that he NEEDS a redemption arc, or people are going to be left unsatisfied.

but they do it with this rushed arc at the end of season 4, culmintating in a time jump. and time jumps are just the worst. all his “growth” happens in matt parkman’s mind prison with peter and we just don’t get to see it! we’re just TOLD that, yeah, he’s good now, just look how long he spent isolated with peter. that’s a good guy now.

like. do i get the reasoning? yes. they had to wrap it up, s4 was the last season, and this is probably realistically the only way they could’ve had the “””time””” to redeem sylar, but falsifying it with a time jump. a good redemption arc for him would’ve taken seasons on seasons. still, doesn’t mean i like the ending he got.

Noah was finally off his back for the time being, having too much going on with Claire’s brave jump. The effect’s of sharing a mind with Peter and being Nathan for almost a year were finally wearing off. Peter kept trying to convince him that their connection was going to help Sylar redeem himself, to be a hero.

Sylar didn’t want anything to do with it and was just starting to feel like himself again. 

After listening to an endless tirade from  from Peter, he shapeshifted and let New York, hoping a change of character would hide until the boy scout got off his case. 

It was a few days before finally arriving in California. There were a number of S P E C I A L people on his list that had intriguing powers. After leaving one of his victims houses, he heard footsteps and turned around, an irritated look on her features. 

“I thought changing my appearance would give you a hint, but apparently you need more convincing.” He spun around, his female features changing to slight shock. “Well..I was expecting someone else.” At least the woman following him was attractive.

Apollo

Also known as: Apollon, Apellon, Phoebus, Apollo, Aplu.

So, I’m pretty sure we’ve all heard of Apollo; the Golden Boy of the Olympian Pantheon. He is a spirit of healing, hunting, music, poetry, and prophecy. Although he never really took over Helios’ function(s), he definitely does overshadow him(I’ll have another post up on Helios soon). Apollo radiates such dazzling charisma that he was eventually venerated a solar deity.

To call someone an “Apollo,” is to imply that they are blindingly handsome. He is a beautiful killer. He is a master healer because he is a master of epidemic, plague, and disease. He’ll lift and inflict them as he pleases. He attacked the Greeks with a plague during the Trojan War; and it can be argued, I think, that he got a little “trigger happy,” with the possibility of WWIII breaking out(COVID-19 is what I’m referencing). He is also blamed for sudden deaths; as his arrows kill instantly.

Now; let’s talk about some of his myths!

“...the birth of Apollon. In her wanderings the...goddess Leto visited all the mountains and islands of Greece...They(the inhabitants) all feared to receive the mighty god who was about to be born. They were all richer than the little, unfruitful island crag of Delos, to which Leto now appealed…”(page 113, The Gods of the Greeks, C. Kereny.)

This myth is arguably the most popular one regarding Apollo’s origin. Leto, who was one of Zeus’ many conquests, was trying to hide from Hera(Zeus’ jealous wife). However, Apollo is also described as coming from a land in the North, which would be Hyperborea. Alternative myths say that Apollo and his mother arrived in Greece in the form of wolves; one myth saying that Leto traveled alone as a pregnant wolf.

Hyperborea’s location has never been identified; nor is it clear if the place exists in the physical realm. I personally believe that its location is in the Spirit realm. But, there’s this one theory that suggests that it’s in the extreme north, near the Arctic Circle. There are just so many conflicting theories that this post would take forever to get through if I were to list out all of them! But, if you truly would like to know the others; just let me know, and I’ll be happy to share.

Apollo is the Greek male deity with the greatest number of male lovers. In general, his relationships with men are happier than his relationships with women. Apollo is the patron and sponsor of young men, teaching them music, divination, and various sports.

He does not have an official “wife,” as most of the women he pursues flee from him. Which I find quite odd… Especially for that time period. He’s incredibly handsome, brilliant, rich, and royal(not to mention, an actual god). But, alas; some run from him, while others commit suicide rather than submit to him. The others who don’t flee, meet a tragically fatal end anyway. What’s going on?

If we take a much closer look at this phenomenon; the women he pursues are rarely mere mortals. Although now trivialized as Nymphs or princesses, many of them were powerful goddesses. The big three Olympians; Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, all “married” female deities to cement their own right to power. Apollo’s path to power, on the other hand, is reminiscent of the character Sylar from the television series, Heroes. He absorbs and takes over the powers of others. Once he killed the Serpent at Delphi, for example, he could then appear/manifest as a snake.

Apollo protects his devotees and their cattle and livestock. He is loyal to those he loves. Apollo is a master healer who can heal anyone except those he, himself has slain. He’s the spirits’s doctor, too, healing them when they are ailing

So, I was browsing my old HD and I found a bunch of stories (fanfic) that I was writing and completely lost interest in (obviously, b/c I stopped writing/planning them out). A lot of the ideas I came up with were pretty good, good enough for original stories, which may have been why I stopped writing the fanfics in the first place.

In particular, I came across several HEROES fanfics that I planned out (but didn’t start writing) and, not to toot my own horn, but I was seriously impressed with some the ideas I came up with? Like, most of it was informed by the years of criticisms that the show got and I remember reading about (on bobthehaitian and deadbrowwalking on LiveJournal, racialicious.com), my desire to kill Sylar with a parking meter, and info from the Heroes Wiki, but some of it could’ve actually panned out if I chose to continue pursuing it.

(It’s wild to think just how fast the HEROES fandom died after S2. Like it just buried itself in the grave with a quickness.)

Speaking the name of the devil, I went to see if the Heroes Wiki was still active, and, lmao, the host (NBC???) nuked the website because of deader-than-dead levels of traffic (which is fitting, considering how badly the show FUBAR’ed everything). The Wikipedia article that chronicled its existence pointed me towards an archived version of the site, tho.
