“Brazil’s highest court has upheld a ban on missionaries entering reserves that are home to isolated and recently contacted Indigenous people during the pandemic.

6. 3-year-old Texas boy found alive after going missing in woods 4 days ago

A 3-year-old boy who went missing after wandering into the woods was found alive and safe on Saturday, rescuers confirmed, ending a frantic four-day search. Christopher Ramirez was "dehydrated as well as hungry" when he was found but "in overall good spirits," a local sheriff said.

7. Drug treatment for Lyme disease could lead to its eradication

The discovery that a chemical is deadly to the bacterium that causes Lyme disease but harmless to animals might allow the disease to be eradicated in the wild.

“Lyme disease is well-positioned to be eradicated,” says Kim Lewis at Northeastern University in Boston. “We are gearing up, the first field trial will be next summer.”

Who Was Hans-Joachim Marseille’s Fiancee? (Part 2)

Caption: This picture of HJM and his fiancee is from a silent video of an interview with Hans-Rudolf Marseille, HJM’s paternal half-brother, during which he displayed pictures from the Marseille family album. Based on the order in which the photos were shown, and the awards that HJM is wearing, it can be inferred that this picture was taken in 1942 in Rome, when HJM and his fiancee went to an awards ceremony where Benito Mussolini personally gave HJM the Megdalia d’Oro in Gold, which was Italy’s highest award.

HJM’s Fiancee During His Lifetime

In starting to talk about the topic of Hans-Joachim Marseille’s fiancee, I think it’s important to start with an event in HJM’s life that changed him forever: the death of his sister, Ingeborg “Inge” Marseille. Inge Marseille’s death in itself is something really interesting, and while I was researching her death and the circumstances behind it, a lot of inconsistencies came up. The same can be said for the research I conducted on her life, which is a story in itself, and a story for another day. I plan on writing another post on Inge Marseille in the future. 

For now, we’ll use Colin Heaton’s depiction of Inge’s death. Heaton states that, “During the war, his...sister Inge, with whom he was very close and protective of, was murdered under mysterious circumstances. This loss left Jochen with deep emotional scars.” In a later part of the book, he goes on to say: “From what could be pieced together, his sister Ingeborg had been living in Vienna and dating a man when the relationship went sour. The prime suspect in her murder was her former abusive boyfriend who stalked her and in a jealous rage murdered her violently.”

At the time, HJM was in Greece recuperating from a myriad of illnesses he had contracted in the desert: malaria, jaundice, and dysentery, to name a few. He received this news in the form of a telegram, which, according to Colin Heaton, stated “Your sister is dead. Please come to Berlin.”

An article was published in a 1954 Revue Zeitschrift newspaper which retells the above events: 

In front of the room stood an unknown Major. Marseille introduced himself, and  suddenly saw, as he said his name, the other's eyes fixate on him questioningly.

“Marseille? Are you the son of Oberst (Siegfried) Marseille from Bremen?”

“Yes.”

“I have come recently from Germany. I give you the tragic news of the death of your sister, along with my sincerest condolences.”

Marseille grasped the Telegram with his left hand. He stood so still, it was as if he had been frozen to ice. 

Inge? Dead?

After Marseille returned to Berlin, he was allowed to convalescence at home while going to frequent doctor appointments at the military hospital near his house. It was somewhere around this time that he received the Megdalia d’Oro in silver. It was also around this time that he met his fiancee, Hanne-Lies Kupper. I wasn’t able to find out when they met exactly, or when Marseille asked her to marry him, but given the fact that he left Germany shortly afterward, they hadn’t known each other for long, or had even been dating for a long time. There are no surviving letters between the two of them--in fact, the only correspondence between them is a photo that was published in a newspaper of the time, titled “Schaumbad in Mittelmeer” (Foam Bath in the Mediterranean), which Marseille wrote on the back of a photograph he sent to HanneLies. 

Regardless, the next time HJM and his fiancee would see each other would be after HJM was called back to Berlin to personally receive the Oak Leaves to his Knight’s Cross from Adolf Hitler. During this time, Marseille and his fiancee were together at his parents’ house as well as on vacation in Bad Saarow, a spa town in Germany. 

Shortly before Marseille’s leave was up, he received an official summons to present himself before Benito Mussolini in Rome, to receive the Megdalia d’Oro in Gold, which was Italy’s highest award. As Marseille got ready to leave, he asked Hanne-Lies to come with him to Rome. Hans-Rudolf Marseille recounts what happened afterward, in a sound clip taken from the 1999 German documentary about Hans-Joachim Marseille. I found this documentary on youtube, but it was dubbed over in Russian, so I asked an acquantaince of mine who is fluent in Russian to translate Hans-Rudolf Marseille’s story to English for me:

At the conclusion of this vacation, HanneLies left for Berlin, and Marseille was to wait for the next transport back to Libya. According to Colin Heaton, “When the JU-52 landed without Marseille, Neumann (his commanding officer) inquired where in the hell he was. The German military authority in Rome sent out a missing persons report on Marseille, which landed on the desk of the local Gestapo chief in Rome, Obersturmbannführer Herbert Kappler.23 Within hours a manhunt was underway, news of which even reached Berlin. The first place they began looking were the brothels, following a tip from an “unknown source.” Marseille was finally located in a village hotel in the Ardeatine area, and he was somehow convinced to return to his unit. Remarkably nothing was ever said about it in the formal reports. He never discussed his absence with even his closest friends, and other than the rumors that were spread among his comrades, the actual details are not known. The most prevalent rumor was that he ran off with an Italian girl.”

Colin Heaton goes on to infer on the source of the above rumor: ” ...from July 1941 until he returned in August 1942 from leave he was known to have kept an apartment in Benghazi for his off time. This was a sort of rest area away from the unit, only a short drive away from most of their landing fields. Although no one from his unit ever saw the place rumor had it that this was his private bachelor pad, where women from many places and social strata enjoyed his company. This collection of women was rumored to have included at least one German general’s wife (if not more), a Moroccan belly dancer, a British spy, an Albanian missionary, a niece of Mussolini’s, a Hungarian countess, Italian singer Nilla Pizzi, several German and Austrian singers and actresses (including Zarah Stina Hedberg Leander, and Olga Knipper), and another woman supposedly related to Count Chiani, hence some of the inquests into his whereabouts. How much of the rumor was true is impossible to say, although Emil Clade saw some corroborating evidence: “Once Marseille had a few days off, he went to Benghazi, and when he returned he always had good schnapps, wine, or brandy. These were hard to get so you had to be well connected. He once began to open his bag and bring out all sorts of wonderful things, until he pulled out a woman’s brassiere. I asked him, ‘Who does that belong to? I hope she is not in the bottom of that bag!’ He said: ‘I have no idea which one this belongs to.’ Stahlschmidt spoke up and said, ‘Healthy woman from the size.’ So I guess the rumors were true.”

Although ‘how much of the rumor was true is impossible to say’, Heaton does confirm that Marseille did indeed have an affair with Italian singer Adionilla “Nilla” Pizzi, who at the time was Marseille’s age (22 years old) and whose songs were censored from the Italian radio stations because her voice was deemed “too sensual and erotic for the fascist regime.” He says:  Marseille received many letters from Nilla Pizzi, the most famous Italian singer, musician, and actress of her day, and there is no doubt that they had an affair. She sent him love letters and gifts, including expensive champagne and wines, as well as very provocative photographs of herself. Marseille even once mentioned that Pizzi “was devilish.” Perhaps the one giveaway to the affair, besides letters, was the record he brought back, the “Rumba Azul” which was his favorite song. It was signed by Pizzi, with “Dearest Lover” written on back, apparently a gift from her to Marseille.

All this, of course, was going on while Marseille was in fact engaged. 

On his last leave, Hanne-Lies had given Marseille a scarf, which he kept wrapped around his neck as a good luck talisman. The scarf makes many appearances in the photos taken of Marseille after his last leave. After his death, the scarf was given to Hans-Rudolf Marseille, along with HJM’s medals and his luftwaffe uniform. 

According to Franz Kurowski’s book “ German Fighter Ace Hans-Joachim Marseille: The Life Story of the Star of Africa”, Marseille had allegedly received a phone call from Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, saying that he was to get the Diamonds to his Knight’s Cross, and that they would be flying back to Germany on the same transport. Marseille refused, saying that he wanted to save his leave for December, citing among other reasons that he wanted to get married to his fiancee at around Christmastime. 

However, he died before that could ever happen.

If we talked about what is happening in Minneapolis the same way we talk about events in a foreign country, here’s how the Western media would cover it. The quotes and those “quoted” in the piece below are fictional.

In recent years, the international community has sounded the alarm on the deteriorating political and human rights situation in the United States under the regime of Donald Trump. Now, as the country marks 100,000 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic, the former British colony finds itself in a downward spiral of ethnic violence. The fatigue and paralysis of the international community are evident in its silence, America experts say.

The country has been rocked by several viral videos depicting extrajudicial executions of black ethnic minorities by state security forces. Uprisings erupted in the northern city of Minneapolis after a video circulated online of the killing of a black man, George Floyd, after being attacked by a security force agent. Trump took to Twitter, calling black protesters “THUGS”’ and threatening to send in military force. “When the looting starts, the shooting starts!” he declared.

“Sure, we get it that black people are angry about decades of abuse and impunity,” said G. Scott Fitz, a Minnesotan and member of the white ethnic majority. “But going after a Target crosses the line. Can’t they find a more peaceful way, like kneeling in silence?”

Ethnic violence has plagued the country for generations, and decades ago it captured the attention of the world, but recently the news coverage and concern are waning as there seems to be no end in sight to the oppression. “These are ancient, inexplicable hatreds fueling these ethnic conflicts and inequality," said Andreja Dulic, a foreign correspondent whose knowledge of American English consists of a semester course in college and the occasional session on the Duolingo app. When told the United States is only several hundred years old, he shrugged and said, “In my country, we have structures still from the Roman empire. In their culture, Americans think that a 150-year-old building is ancient history.”

Britain usually takes an acute interest in the affairs of its former colony, but it has also been affected by the novel coronavirus. “We’ve seen some setbacks with the virus, but some Brits see the rising disease, staggering unemployment and violence in the States and feel as if America was never ready to govern itself properly, that it would resort to tribal politics,” said Andrew Darcy Morthington, a London-based America expert. During the interview, a news alert informed that out of the nearly 40,000 coronavirus deaths in the United Kingdom, 61 percent of the health-care workers who have died were black and or have Middle Eastern backgrounds. Morthington didn’t seem to notice. “Like I was saying, we don’t have those American racism issues here.”

Trump, a former reality-TV host, beauty pageant organizer and businessman, once called African nations “shithole countries." But he is now taking a page from African dictators who spread bogus health remedies, like Yahya Jammeh of Gambia, who claimed he could cure AIDS with bananas and herbal potions and pushed his treatments onto the population, resulting in deaths. Trump appeared to suggest injecting bleach and using sunlight to kill the coronavirus. He has also said he has taken hydroxycholoroquine, a drug derived from quinine, a long-known jungle remedy for malaria. Doctors have advised against using the treatment to prevent or treat the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Americans desperate to flee will face steep challenges to cross borders, as mismanagement of the coronavirus and ethnic tensions in the country have made them undesirable visitors. But some struggling American retailers, like Neiman Marcus, are hoping to lure shoppers with traditional 19th-century colonial travel fantasies through neutral khakis and cargo shorts as part of a “Modern Safari” collection. “Utilitarian details & muted tones meet classic femininity,” reads a caption under the photograph of a white woman. Pith helmets were not included in the accessory lineup.

Some nations are considering offering black Americans special asylum. “Members of the white ethnic majority are forming armed militia groups, demanding their freedom to go back to work for the wealthy class who refer to workers as ‘human capital stock,’ despite the huge risk to workers,” said Mustapha Okango, a Nairobi-based anthropologist. “This is a throwback to the days when slavery was the backbone of the American economy. Black slaves were the original essential workers, and they were treated as non-human stock.”

Africa could be an ideal asylum destination, as several African countries have managed to contain the coronavirus outbreak through aggressive early measures and innovations in testing kits. Senegal, a nation of 16 million, has only seen 41 deaths. “Everyone predicted Africa would fall into chaos,” Okango said. “It is proof that being a black person in this world doesn’t kill you, but being a black person in America clearly can.” The African Union did not respond to requests for comment, but it released a statement that said “we believe in American solutions for American problems.”

Around the world, grass-roots organizations, celebrities, human rights activists and even students are doing what they can to raise money and awareness about the dire situation in America.

“It’s sad that the Americans don’t have a government that can get them coronavirus tests or even monthly checks to be able to feed their families,” said Charlotte Johnson, a 18-year-old Liberian student activist, who survived the Ebola pandemic. “100,000 people are dead, cities are burning, and the country hasn’t had a day of mourning? Lives don’t matter, especially not black lives. It’s like they’re living in a failing state.”

there's not much here. a victim of The Flesh is losing parts of their body, and tries to strike a deal with Salesa for...something...presumably an artifact that he thinks will save or protect him. but he can't afford it, and is killed by the statement giver shortly after.

MAG038 - Lost and Found

thank God Salesa is no longer in possession of the vase, bc I swear, I swear, if it so much as sat on an end table in the same room as Martin or Jon, I would have crawled through my phone to drop the ding dang thing off a building and let it shatter below.

it's in his post-statement notes, while discussing Salesa and how he sells a large amount of artifacts to the Institute, that Jon spots the spider that he smashes, causing him to accidentally break through the wall and discover Jane Prentiss's worms as they prepare to invade the building. which feels significant, given the spider-filled company he seems to be keeping now.

MAG045 - Blood Bag

here's where things get interesting. the statement giver works in a lab studying mosquitos to find a preventative measure against them spreading malaria. the statement giver's boss is distantly related to a doctor who helped stop a cholera pandemic way back when. the boss owns an antique syringe case that belonged to that doctor, and then sells that item to Salesa to help fund this project. it's only after the syringe is sold that things start to go Wrong, and the mosquitos obviously become agents of The Corruption.

why is that interesting? when a statement features an artifact, usually The Fears only show up when that item enters the story, not when the artefact leaves it. The Corruption only starts to infect the mosquitos after the boss no longer has the syringe. especially with its connection to a man who stopped the spread of a disease, the syringe almost plays the part of a talismen against evil in this story, and with it gone, they have lost that protection. which is a curious flip for Salesa (known Cursed Artifact Dealer) to have bought something that might ward off The Fears rather than something that works for them.

MAG066 - Held in Customs

when the statement giver opens the box in Salesa's cargo (an artifact probably equal parts Buried and Lonely), and finds it empty, Salesa looks concerned. I always interpret that as he used to have someone in the box, but the box ate them already.

he warns the statement giver not to fall asleep (as a precaution against waking up to find himself in the box? as a survival tip for when he finds himself in the box?) which reminds me of Gerry trying to help various people survive the Fears, but he also placed a bet with Peter Lukas on whether or not the statement giver would survive, bc might as well get some fun out of it. Salesa contains multitudes.

I relistened to Leitner's statement to double-check, and I'm pretty sure Salesa is the only surviving assistant from Leitner's library.

I don't have a lot of thoughts for this one, but get you a man who is so good to his crew that they help him cover up a spooky death without batting an eye.

"Once found [Salesa] poring over an old photo album. The ship was there in the pictures, but a different captain, different crew. I asked him who they were, and he just looked at me, eyes sunken like hadn’t slept, and for a second I felt like he was seeing someone else, not me. But then he just shrugged. 'Dead now,' he said, 'doesn’t really matter.' " Hmmmm. what happened to your old crew, mister Salesa, sir?

I wonder if there is a connection between the photo album of his old crew, the final job which is procurring an old camera with a cracked lense, and the fact Salesa's ship is called The Dorian (as in, "The Picture of Dorian Gray").

speaking of the camera. We see the same thing here that happened in MAG045. Salesa and a handful of crew members go to an island to retrieve an artifact. they come back with the aforementioned old camera with a cracked lense, having lost two of the crew members that went with him. and, now the camera is out of its former owner's possession, a storm starts brewing over the island. lightning strikes the trees, and the statement giver can see some vast (nudge nudge) creature below the water surrounding the island, beginning to break the surface. the statement giver falls to the deck of the ship as they sail away, and when he looks back, the island and storm are gone.

just like how The Corruption began to infest the mosquitos once Salesa bought the syringe, The Vast goes after this island once Salesa takes the camera off of it.

idk. this is probably me reading too much into it. but it's not entirely impossible that Salesa has been collecting artifacts that ward against The Fears somehow. and if he is, I wonder if that has something to do with how seemingly untouched his manor house has been by the Fearpocalypse.

anyway. when Salesa supposedly dies in an explosion, we only have the captain's word for it (who dies soon after himself). so he might have faked his death.

Let’s look at life expectancy:  In Italy, average life expectancies in the solidly Medieval 1200s were 35-40, while by the year 1500 (definitely Renaissance) life expectancy in Italian city states had dropped to 18.

It’s striking how consistently, when I use these numbers live, the shocked and mournful silence is followed by a guy objecting: those numbers are deceptive, you’re including infant mortality—voiced as if this observation should discredit them.  Yes, the average of 18 does include infant mortality, but the Medieval average of 35 includes it too, so the drop is just as real.  If you want we can exclude those who die before age 12, and we do get a smaller total drop then, average age of death 54 in the 1200s dropping to 45-48 in 1500, so only a 12-16% drop instead of 48%, but the more we zoom the grimmer the Renaissance half proves.  Infant mortality (within 12 months) averaged 28% both before and after 1348, so the big drop from Medieval to Renaissance Italy is actually kids who made it past the first year, only to die in years 2-12 from new diseases.  We also think of the dangers of childbirth as lowering women’s lifespans, but death from childbirth stayed steady from Medieval to Renaissance at (for Tuscany) 1 death per 40 births, while the increase in war and violence made adult male mortality far higher than female even with the childbirth threat.  If we look at the 20% of people who lived longest in Renaissance Italy it’s almost entirely widows and nuns, plus a few diehards like Titian, and poor exiled Cardinal da Costa of Portugal languishing in Rome to the age of 102, with everyone he’d known in the first 2/3rds of his life long gone.  Kids died more in the Renaissance, adults died more, men died more, we have the numbers, but I find it telling how often people who hear these numbers try to discredit them, search for a loophole, because these facts rub against our expectations.  We didn’t want a wretched golden age. (Demographics are, of course, an average, and different bits of Europe varied, but I’m using the numbers for the big Italian city-states precisely because they’re the bit of Europe we most associate with the golden Renaissance, so if it’s true there, it’s true of the Renaissance you were imagining.)

Why did life expectancy drop?  Counter-intuitively the answer is, largely, progress.

War got worse, for one.  Over several centuries, innovations in statecraft and policy (which would continue gradually for centuries more) had increased the centralization of power in the hands of kings and governments, especially their ability to gather funds, which meant they could raise larger armies and have larger, bloodier wars.   Innovations in metallurgy, chemistry, and engineering also made soldiers deadlier, with more artillery, more lethal weapons, more ability to knock a town’s walls down and kill everyone inside, new daggers designed to leave wounds that would fester, or anti-personnel artillery designed to slice a line of men in half.  Thus, while both the Middle Ages and Renaissance had lots of wars, Renaissance wars were larger and deadlier, involving more troops and claiming more lives, military and civilian—this wasn’t a sudden change, it was a gradual one, but it made a difference.

Economic growth also made the life expectancy go down.  Europe was becoming more interconnected, trade increasing.  This was partly due to innovations in banking (which had started in the 1100s), and partly, yes, the aftermath of the Black Death which caused a lot of economic change—not growth but change—some sectors growing, others shrinking, people moving around, people trying to stop people from moving around, markets shifting.  There were also innovations in insurance, for example insuring your cargo ship so if it sinks you don’t go bankrupt like our Merchant of Venice.  This meant more multi-region trade. For example, weaving wool into fine-quality non-itchy thread required a lot of oil, without which you could only make coarse, itchy thread.  England produced lots of wool but no oil (except walnuts), so, in the Renaissance, entrepreneurs from England, instead of spinning low-profit itchy wool, started exporting their wool to Italy where abundant olive oil made it cheap to produce high-quality cloth and re-export it to England and elsewhere.  This let merchants grow rich, prosperity for some, but when people move around more, diseases move more too.  Cities were also growing denser, more manufacturing jobs and urban employment drawing people to crowd inside tight city walls, and urban spaces always have higher mortality rates than rural.  Malaria, typhoid, dysentery, deadly influenza, measles, the classic pox, these old constants of Medieval life grew fiercer in the Renaissance, with more frequent outbreaks claiming more lives.

The Black Death contributed too—in school they talk as if the plague swept through in 1348 then went away, but the bubonic plague did not go away, it remained endemic, like influenza or chickenpox today, a fact of life.  I have never read a full set of Renaissance letters which didn’t mention plague outbreaks and plague deaths, and Renaissance letters from mothers to their traveling sons regularly include, along with advice on etiquette and eating enough fennel, a list of which towns to avoid this season because there’s plague there.  Carlo Cipolla (in the fascinating yet tediously titled Before the Industrial Revolution) collected great data for the two centuries after 1348, in which Venice had major plague bursts 7% of years, Florence 14% of years, Paris 9% of years, Barcelona 13% of years, and England (usually London) 22% in the earlier period spiking to 50% in the later 1500s, when England saw plague in 26 out of 50 years between 1543 and 1593.  Excluding tiny villages with little traffic, losing a friend or sibling to plague was a universal experience from 1348 clear to the 1720s, when plague finally diminished in Europe, not because of any advance in medicine, but because fourteen generations of exposure gave natural selection time to work, those who survived to reproduce passing on a heightened immune response, a defensive adaptation bought over centuries by millions of deaths.

Today thousands of cases of Y. pestis (the plague bacterium) still occur each year, largely in sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia where it was not endemic so immunities didn’t develop.  And if geneticist Mihai Netea is correct that the immune mutation which helps those of European descent resist Y. pestis also causes our greater rate of autoimmune disorders, then the Black Death is still constantly claiming lives through the changes it worked into European DNA over 400 years (and literally causing me pain as I type this, as my own autoimmune condition flares).  While the 1348 pandemic was Medieval, most of the Middle Ages did not have the plague—it’s the Renaissance which has the plague every single day as an apocalyptic lived reality.

Economic growth also made non-military violence worse.  Feuds (think Montagues and Capulets) were a Medieval constant, but the body count of a feud depends a lot on how wealthy the head families are, since the greater their wealth and the larger their patronage network, the larger the crowd of goons on stage in the opening scene of Romeo & Juliet when partisans of the two factions are biting their thumbs at each other, and the larger the number of unnamed men who also get killed in the background while Romeo fights Tybalt.  In Italy especially, new avenues for economic growth (banking and mercenary work) quickly made families grow wealthy enough to raise forces far larger than the governments of their little city states, which made states powerless to stop the violence, and vulnerable to frequent, bloody coups.  The Bentivoglios of Bologna and Sforza of Milan (whose marriage alliance produced Ercole who wrote that letter to Machiavelli) had risen by force, ruled by force, and were in turn overthrown by force, several times each, in fact, as rulers were killed, then avenged by returning sons or nephews, and cities flip-flopped between rival dynasties every few years
