This theory has probably been said before but I think Miracle the Dog is secretly Castiel. Think about it. Miracle appeared to Dean in his hour of need, when Castiel was gone and the world was nearly wiped out and it was the only life remaining in this abandoned gas station. But not everything is as it seems. I think Cas is taking the form of this dog to watch over Dean, to fill him with hope again after Dean was left in despair after his tragic sacrifice. What makes this add up even more is that Dean says Miracle is the best thing that has happened to him in the last few days and gives him that very name. It reminds me of what Cas says in Lazarus Rising "good things do happen, Dean..". And then Chuck comes and takes Miracle away, taking away every hope Dean has left because he is trying to stop Castiel from interfering with his story.

Dean and Castiel's love was something they made up on their own, not Chuck's doing, and he will do anything to keep them apart. Dean has hope one minute and the next it is taken away from him. It is all Dean has ever known because good things never last in his experience. It is just like Cas getting taken away from him all over again because in the absence of hope, there is despair and Chuck will do anything to make Dean feel hopeless. And then Dean died, separating him further from Cas and leaving Miracle all alone. Life is unfair and Chuck wants to keep Miracle away from Dean in whatever way he can.

After defeating Chuck, Dean adopts Miracle because he reminds him so much of Cas. He came at a time when he needed him the most, just like when Cas did after pulling him out of hell. Dogs are man's best friends because they are sent by heaven to watch over us and give us light in dark times. That's exactly what the German Shepherd was referring to in Dog Dean Afternoon.

You could say Castiel has always been a talking dog 🐶

it's vitally important to me that dean and cas were kind of together in s12. not in a big way. they hadn't talked about it. it just kind of happened in the early days of mary being back. cas was no longer possessed by lucifer. the angels were minding their business more or less. amara wasn't a problem anymore. sam was alive and mostly well. mary was alive and it was difficult and cas was the person dean would confide in and one night it just... kind of happened and they didn't really talk about it but besides a few awkward moments nothing really changed. and then it happened again. and again. and then dean got locked up in super solitary and cas killed billie and they had their little domestic and then dean got whammied by that witch and may or may not have hooked up with someone else and he felt guilty about it and then cas told dean he loved him (while dean was still feeling guilty) but then he walked it back and made it about everyone and that made dean feel worse and then the nephil arc began and cas was never around and they still hadn't talked about it and then cas ran off with kelly and dean was mad but still. still. it was cas and when he healed dean at the lakehouse it felt like it meant something but then cas died. and then there was jack. and then apocalypse world. and then michael. and then and then and then and eventually so much time had passed that they both just assumed the other one decided it wasn't worth it. and then the confession happens and dean is furious.

It's really interesting how Jensen will confide in Misha re his Destiel deeds. He told Misha about 'Watching over me' being Dean's POV of Cas and he told him about the shot glasses his brewery sells being blue and green for Destiel reasons. But he rarely talks about Destiel in panels (most of which he shares with Jared and which are heavily attended by j/2 stans) and I think there is a reason for that 🙄
