Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Ended up going with @ebearcrochet 's suggestion for a summer top and cast on Lene Tøsti's Rosenrot top! (Already had the pattern from a previous time I knit it, but I don't fit that one anymore)

earlier i joined the body. i don't think i've ever done a top-down sweater before.
Tumblr media
[pattern: sweater no. 23; yarn: queensland kathmandu aran, peridot]
the picture is all weird cause my (iphone 8) camera could not see green at ALL. it was like a fully grayscale photo so i went wild with the sliders just to try and get it remotely accurate. it's green! but a slightly cooler (less yellow) green.
this has been an extremely enjoyable project so far. in december i was talking to my friend dea about things we want to pursue in 2024 and one of the major ones for me is... i still haven't figured out a way to articulate this that i'm happy with but... taking myself more seriously? respecting myself or time more? i mean, i DO respect myself it's more about combatting bad adhd habits using different framing... something like that.
so, the two main tangible things in the goal/philosophy were: finding a new PT and really trying to fix my shoulder pain, and being more deliberate with my knitting projects.
instead of rushing into casting on and getting started: i did a real gauge swatch, maybe for the first time ever. i changed my needle size accordingly. i measured myself and did the necessary math to choose the right size. i tested the increases to make sure i was rewriting it for left-handed knitting correctly. and when i made a very minor error, i frogged back and fixed it because the error was around the part of the sweater i most want to look perfect. (the 4st band at the top of the shoulders. if you look at the photos on the pattern page you'll see it really clearly. i saw someone wearing this sweater and that was the detail that jumped out at me and that made me want to make it.)
i think it helped that i had another project - the hats - to get done so when i wanted to 'just knit' i could work on that instead. multi-tasking win?
so it's been really satisfying and i've definitely noticed improvements based on all the projects i've finished recently, for example, i picked up the shoulder stitches perfectly on both sides on the first try. i also started a dedicated project notebook which has been very helpful and is the realization of a plan i had in mind literally since high school knitting era. never too late.!

Knit Long Tail Cast On
Knitting: How to Cast On – Thumb Long Tail Method Cast On Thumb Long Tail Cast on The Thumb Long Tail Cast On is very similar to the regular long tail cast on. It’s just a difference of holding the yarn. This method is pretty straight forward without anything too complex. If you remember, the long tail cast on has you wrap the yarn around your thumb and pointer finger. In this method, you only…

If King Charles dies on or before March 25th, 2024, he will technically be the shortest-reigning king in English history.
Anyway, like to charge, reblog to cast.

Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:
In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.
A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.
In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.

After knitting the final swatch with three strands of holst coast I finally started on the 'Masterpiece' cardigan by Hintern Stein.
Not sure I've ever knit something with a construction like this before so it's quite interesting!
I am a bit sad that I went for a wool cotton blend yarn though because my hands and wrists are hurting quite a bit from the lack of elasticity the cotton gives the yarn. Though that might have more to do with holding three strands of yarn while knitting with 4mm needles 😅.
